RESUMO Os reservatórios são a principal fonte de abastecimento de água na região semiárida do Estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, devido à constante escassez de água que impacta essa região. O conhecimento da quantidade de água disponível é extremamente importante para uma gestão eficaz dos recursos hídricos. O cálculo do volume de água armazenado nos reservatórios é feito com as curvas cota-área-volume. Porém, na maioria dos reservatórios localizados no semiárido, essa relação está desatualizada. Nesse sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi explorar o potencial e as limitações da aplicação do método ISODATA de classificação não supervisionada para calcular as relações cota-área-volume de reservatórios localizados na região semiárida do Estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. A aplicação do método ISODATA foi avaliada em três reservatórios no Estado de Pernambuco, Poço da Cruz, Barra do Juá e Jucazinho. Os resultados foram comparados com curvas atualizadas dos reservatórios obtidas recentemente a partir de levantamento batimétrico e técnica LiDAR. O método ISODATA apresentou resultados satisfatórios para os três reservatórios analisados. O erro médio absoluto do volume em Poço da Cruz e Barra do Juá foi inferior a 1% da capacidade máxima. A tendência de subestimação da área superficial diminuiu no reservatório de Poço da Cruz usando o método ISODATA em comparação com o uso de índices espectrais.

ABSTRACT Reservoirs are the primary source of water supply in the semiarid region of Pernambuco state, Brazil, because of the constant water scarcity affecting this region. Knowledge of the amount of water available is essential for the effective management of water resources. The volume of water stored in the reservoirs is calculated using the depth-area-volume relationship. However, in most reservoirs in the semiarid region, this relationship is currently out of date. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the potential and limitations of the application of the ISODATA unsupervised classification method to calculate the depth-area-volume relationships of reservoirs in the semiarid region of Pernambuco, Brazil. The application of the ISODATA method was evaluated in three reservoirs in the state of Pernambuco, i.e., Poço da Cruz, Barra do Juá, and Jucazinho. The results were compared with the updated curves of reservoirs obtained from bathymetry and recent LiDAR surveys. The ISODATA method presented satisfactory results for the three reservoirs analyzed. The mean absolute error of the volume in Poço da Cruz and Barra do Juá was lower than 1% of the maximum capacity. The use of the ISODATA method meant that the surface area underestimation tendency in the Poço da Cruz reservoir was less than when spectral indices were used.

RESUMO O presente estudo teve como objetivo aplicar e avaliar um filtro exponencial que calcula a umidade do solo na zona da raiz usando dados de superfície do satélite soil moisture and ocean salinity (SMOS), assim como avaliar a umidade do solo simulada em modelos de superfície de bases de dados globais. O índice de água do solo (obtido após a aplicação do filtro exponencial) e a umidade do solo simulada com modelos de superfície terrestre (GLDAS-CLSM, GLDAS-Noah e ERA5-Land) de bancos de dados globais foram comparados com dados in situ para avaliar sua eficiência na estimativa do teor de água do solo em diferentes profundidades. As medições de superfície do satélite SMOS permitiram estimar a umidade do solo nas profundidades de 20 e 40 cm por meio da aplicação do filtro exponencial. Em ambas as profundidades, a aplicação do filtro exponencial melhorou significativamente a estimativa da umidade do solo medida pelo satélite SMOS. O modelo GLDAS-Noah apresentou os melhores valores de erro quadrático médio, enquanto os modelos GLDAS-CLSM e ERA5-Land superestimaram a umidade do solo. No entanto, a variação sazonal foi bem representada por todos os modelos de superfície.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to apply and assess an exponential filter that calculates the root-zone soil moisture using surface data from the soil moisture and ocean salinity (SMOS) satellite, as well as to assess soil moisture simulated in land-surface models from global databases. The soil water index (obtained after application of the exponential filter) and soil moisture simulated using land surface models (GLDAS-CLSM, GLDAS-Noah, and ERA5-Land) from global databases were compared with in situ data to evaluate their efficiency in estimating soil water content at different depths. Surface measurements from the SMOS satellite allowed the estimation of soil moisture at depths of 20 and 40 cm by applying the exponential filter. At both depths, the application of the exponential filter significantly improved the estimation of soil moisture measured by the SMOS satellite. The GLDAS-Noah model had the best root mean square error values, whilst the GLDAS-CLSM and ERA5-Land models overestimated the soil moisture. Nevertheless, the seasonal variation was well represented by all land surface models.

RESUMO O Nordeste do Brasil é uma das regiões semiáridas mais populosas no mundo. A região é altamente dependente de reservatórios para abastecimento humano de água, irrigação, indústria e pecuária. O objetivo deste estudo foi validar séries temporais de níveis de água dos satélites Envisat, SARAL, Sentinel-3A/-3B, Jason-2/-3 em pequenos reservatórios no Nordeste do Brasil. No total, foram avaliadas as séries temporais de nível da água de 20 reservatórios. O Sentinel-3B superou os outros altímetros com um RMSE máximo de 0,21 m. Em sete reservatórios com curva cota-área-volume atualizadas, o nível de água dos satélites foi utilizado para calcular o volume correspondente. O volume obtido foi então comparado ao volume dado pela mesma curva usando nível medido. Os resultados mostraram que, no caso de pequenos reservatórios, a precisão das séries temporais de nível da água derivadas da altimetria de satélite é governada principalmente pela variabilidade sazonal do armazenamento especialmente no final do período de seca 2012-2017.

ABSTRACT Northeast Brazil is one of the most populated semiarid regions in the world. The region is highly dependent on reservoirs for human water supply, irrigation, industry, and livestock. The objective of this study was to validate water level time series from the satellites Envisat, SARAL, Sentinel-3A/-3B, Jason-2/-3 in small reservoirs in Northeast Brazil. In total, we evaluated the water level time series of 20 reservoirs. The Sentinel-3B outperforms the other altimeters with a maximum RMSE of 0.21 m. In seven reservoirs with updated depth-area-volume curves, the altimetric water level was used to calculate the corresponding volume. The obtained volume was then compared to the volume given by the same curve by using in situ stage. Our investigations showed that, in the case of small reservoirs, the precision of water level time series derived from satellite altimetry is mainly governed by the seasonal variability of the water storage especially at the end of the 2012-2017 drought period.

RESUMO A sequência de eventos de seca no Nordeste do Brasil ocorridos nas décadas recentes chama a atenção para a importância de se estudar este fenômeno. Este artigo tem por objetivo avaliar a duração e a severidade de eventos de seca, para as bacias hidrográficas do Estado de Pernambuco, durante o período de 1988 a 2018, utilizando-se dois índices de seca: o Standardized Soil Moisture Index e o Soil Moisture Condition Index calculados com dados da base European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative Soil Moisture. A duração da seca foi determinada contabilizando-se os meses entre o início e o fim e a severidade foi dada pela área formada no gráfico entre a curva do índice e o eixo-x. A base de dados de umidade do solo mostrou-se promissora para utilização na região Nordeste do Brasil, particularmente, para a aplicação na análise e acompanhamento de eventos de seca. Os índices permitiram avaliar o fenômeno da seca no período de 30 anos, evidenciando aumento a partir do ano de 2012, sendo mais acentuado na região semiárida. As bacias hidrográficas respondem de forma distinta para um mesmo evento, a depender da característica climática da região em que está localizada. Anos consecutivos com precipitação abaixo da média histórica amplificam a magnitude da seca, como observado no período entre 2012 e 2017, em que os índices apresentam dificuldade para retornar a valores mais favoráveis, mostrando a influência que um ano seco exerce sobre o ano seguinte.

ABSTRACT The sequence of drought events in the Northeast of Brazil in recent decades raises attention to the importance of studying this phenomenon. The objective of this study was to evaluate the duration and severity of drought events from 1988 to 2018 in hydrographic basins of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, using two drought indexes: Standardized Soil Moisture Index and Soil Moisture Condition Index, calculated based on data of the Soil Moisture Project of the European Space Agency’s Climate Change Initiative. The duration of the droughts was determined considering the months between their beginning and end, and their severity was based on the area formed in the graph between the curve of the index and the x-axis. The soil moisture database showed to be a promising tool for the analysis and monitoring of drought events in the Northeast region of Brazil, mainly for analysis and monitoring of drought events. The indexes allowed the evaluation of the drought phenomenon over the 30-year period, showing increases from 2012, which were more pronounced in the Semiarid region. The hydrographic basins responded differently to a same event, depending on the climate characteristics of the region in which they are located. Consecutive years with rainfall below the historical mean increased the magnitude of the droughts, as found for the 2012-2017 period, in which the indexes presented delays to return to more favorable values, showing the effect that one drought year has on the following year.

RESUMO Neste trabalho discute-se um modelo de otimização multicritério baseado em Sistemas de Informações Geográficas (SIGs), que tem por finalidade a determinação dos locais com maior potencial para locação do traçado de adutoras por meio da utilização de variáveis de custo, bem como do melhor caminho para esse traçado. Em decorrência disso, foi possível simular rotas de custo mínimo para o traçado da adutora, considerando critérios relacionados com: as declividades e as altitudes da área, as distâncias de rios e áreas alagadas e a proximidade de rodovias. A análise leva em consideração a importância (peso) de cada critério no modelo. Para minimizar a subjetividade na escolha dos valores desses pesos, buscou-se a opinião de especialistas com relação aos critérios analisados. O método Análise Hierárquica de Pesos (AHP) foi utilizado para a ponderação dos critérios. Para aplicação da metodologia, utilizou-se como área de estudo um trecho da Adutora do Pajeú no Estado de Pernambuco e uma base de dados de alta definição do Programa Pernambuco Tridimensional (Programa PE3D), além da base de dados Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)/TOPODATA. Os resultados obtidos por meio de SIG permitiram identificar as áreas consideradas de maior aptidão para a locação do traçado da adutora e determinar uma rota otimizada para esse traçado. Na prática, significou na determinação de uma rota para implantação da tubulação da adutora, o que sugere que a utilização de SIG e técnicas de otimização pode auxiliar a tomada de decisão no que se refere aos projetos de sistemas adutores de abastecimento de água.

ABSTRACT This paper discusses a multi-criteria GIS-based optimization model, which aims to determine the locations with the highest potential for the location of the water mains through the use of cost variables, as well as the best path for this tracing. As a result, it was possible to simulate minimum cost routes for the pipeline layout, considering criteria related to: the slope and altitude of the area, the distances of rivers and flooded areas and the proximity of highways. The analysis takes into account the importance (weight) of each criterion in the model. To minimize subjectivity in choosing the values of these weights, expert opinion was sought regarding the criteria analyzed. The HWA (Hierarchical Weight Analysis) method was used to weigh the criteria. To apply the methodology, the study area used an excerpt from the Pajeú pipeline in the state of Pernambuco and a high definition database from the Pernambuco Three-dimensional Program, as well as the SRTM/TOPODATA database. The results obtained through GIS allowed us to identify the areas considered to be the most suitable for the location of the pipeline and to determine an optimized route for this route. In practice, it meant determining a route for the pipeline installation, which suggests that the use of GIS and optimization techniques can help decision making regarding the design of water supply systems.

Resumo Eventos extremos de cheia que ocorrem poucas horas após a precipitação em regiões de altas declividades, conhecidos como flash flood, são observados na bacia hidrográfica do rio Una. O artigo tem como objetivo avaliar a modelagem hidrológica e hidrodinâmica com dados sub-diários dos maiores eventos de cheia da bacia do rio Una nos anos de 2011 e 2017. Precipitação e vazão sub-diárias foram utilizadas nos modelos Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) e River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). A calibração foi avaliada pela eficiência de Nash-Sutcliffe (NSE), percentual de tendência e a razão dada pelo erro quadrático médio pelo desvio padrão dos dados observados (RSR). Os parâmetros taxa de infiltração máxima e coeficiente de pico do método HU Snyder apresentaram maior sensibilidade na calibração do HEC-HMS. A calibração exibiu um bom desempenho (estação Catende NSE=0.78, RSR=0.46; estação Palmares NSE=0.68, RSR=0.57). O modelo hidrodinâmico unidimensional apresentou instabilidades devido às regiões íngremes da bacia. A solução 2D foi necessária para superar esse problema, o que permitiu representar satisfatoriamente o nível da água na cidade de palmares.

Abstract Flash floods are observed in the Una River Basin, Pernambuco/Brazil. This particular type of flood is a short-duration hydrological event with occurrence of the peak flow within minutes to few hours after the onset of the rainfall, taking place typically in mountainous regions. The objective of the paper was to assess the sub-daily hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling of flood events in 2011 and 2017. Sub-daily precipitation and streamflow were applied to the models Hydrologic Engineering Center-Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) and River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). Model evaluation methods such as Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), percent bias, and the ratio of the root mean squared error to the standard deviation of measured data (RSR) were used in the calibration process. The maximum infiltration rate and the Snyder peak coefficient estimation were the most sensitive parameters in the hydrological model. The calibration of the HEC-HMS showed good performances (Catende station NSE=0.78 and RSR=0.46; Palmares station NSE=0.68 and RSR=0.57). During HEC-RAS 1D flow simulations, steep regions in the Una River caused numerical instabilities. The 2D solution was needed to overcome this problem, allowing us to represent the water level in the city of Palmares satisfactorily.

RESUMO Este artigo apresenta a aplicação de produtos adquiridos por levantamento aéreo para caracterização de reservatórios de abastecimento de água na Bacia do Rio Pajeú (Pernambuco/Brasil). O levantamento foi feito com câmeras digitais de alta resolução espacial e perfilamento de relevo a laser (tecnologia LiDAR). Foram selecionadas duas áreas para aplicação dos produtos de sensoriamento remoto. Pequenos reservatórios na Bacia do Riacho Quixaba foram identificados com base em suas características topográficas. Considerando que os pequenos reservatórios são “depressões” no terreno, eles podem ser “preenchidos” resultando em um novo MDT. A diferença entre o MDT preenchido e o MDT original torna possível a identificação dos reservatórios. O resumo dos resultados é: 61 reservatórios foram corretamente detectados; 18 reservatórios não foram detectados; 13 reservatórios foram detectados erroneamente. Em outra aplicação, foi estimada a capacidade de armazenamento dos reservatórios pertencentes aos hidrossistemas da Bacia do Rio Pajeú. O armazenamento nos reservatórios e a área superficial máxima foram estimados utilizando o MDT e ferramentas de geoprocessamento. Do total de 31 reservatórios avaliados, 8 estavam completamente vazios durante o sobrevôo. Os registros oficiais totalizam 83,83 milhões de m3 para a capacidade de armazenamento dos oito reservatórios, enquanto este trabalho estimou o valor de 70,23 milhões de m3. Essa diferença pode ser explicada pela perda de volume nos reservatórios devido ao processo de transporte de sedimento.

ABSTRACT This paper reports the application of information acquired by aerial survey to characterize water supply reservoirs in the Pajeú River Basin (Pernambuco State/Brazil). The survey was carried out with digital cameras of high spatial resolution and laser relief profiling (LiDAR technology). Two areas were selected to apply the remote sensing products. Small reservoirs in the Quixaba Creek Basin were identified based on their topographic characteristics. Given that the small reservoirs are “depressions” in the terrain, they can be “filled”, resulting in a new Digital Terrain Model (DTM). The difference between the filled DTM and the original DTM makes it possible to identify the reservoirs. A summary of the results is: 61 reservoirs were correctly detected; 18 reservoirs were not detected; 13 reservoirs were detected erroneously. In another application, the storage capacity of the reservoirs belonging to the hydrosystems of Pajeú River Basin was estimated. The storage in these reservoirs and maximum surface area were estimated using DTM and geoprocessing tools. From the total of 31 reservoirs evaluated, eight were completely empty at the time of the LiDAR data collection. The official registers reported 83.83 million m3 for the storage capacity of these eight reservoirs, whereas our applications estimated the value at 70.23 million m3. This difference is explained by the loss of volume in the reservoirs due to the process of sediment transport.

RESUMO Estudos envolvendo vulnerabilidade de cidades à inundações necessitam do mapeamento de perigo e das áreas com potencial para inundação. O objetivo do artigo é desenvolver metodologia para mapeamento de indicadores de perigo e áreas inundáveis na escala de município. A área de estudo é o município de Ipojuca no Estado de Pernambuco com área de 527,11 km2 e uma população de 80.637 habitantes. A primeira metodologia consiste na simulação hidrológica-hidráulica para o baixo curso do rio Ipojuca com uso dos modelos HEC-HMS e HEC-RAS. A vazão gerada no modelo hidrológico do tipo chuva-vazão é utilizada como entrada do modelo hidráulico que simula o perfil da linha d’água no rio para a região de interesse. Com o perfil da linha da água, pode-se determinar a profundidade e a velocidade da água, que são elementos chave para a definição de indicadores de perigo. Com os resultados do modelo hidráulico, geraram-se seis indicadores de perigo: profundidade da água, velocidade do fluxo, combinação profundidade e velocidade, carga de energia, força do escoamento e intensidade (velocidade x profundidade). A outra metodologia procura identificar as áreas inundáveis de todo o território do município. Para isso, faz-se uso do índice topográfico da região e de uma matriz de custo de distância (que utiliza declividade e hidrografia), todos calculados com o modelo digital do terreno. A análise de risco é essencial para o planejamento e intervenção em áreas sujeitas a inundações. Para se avaliar risco, é necessária a caracterização do perigo e da vulnerabilidade. Os resultados do estudo em Ipojuca podem ser utilizados para a caracterização do perigo principalmente.

ABSTRACT Studies focusing on urban vulnerabilities due to river floods need the construction of hazard maps and definition of potential flood areas. The objective of this article is to describe the development of a methodology for hazard mapping of river floods and to map areas susceptible to inundation on a municipal scale. The study area is the municipality of Ipojuca – Pernambuco State with area of 527.11 km2 and population of 80,637 inhabitants. The first methodology uses the hydrologic-hydraulic simulation for the lower course of the Ipojuca River using the HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS models. The streamflow calculated in the rainfall-runoff model is used as input for the hydraulic model, to simulate the water surface profile in the river. This makes it possible to calculate the water depth and flow velocity, the key elements for the definition of hazard indicators. The results of the hydraulic model were used to generate the hazard indicators: water depth, flow velocity, combination of depth and velocity, energy head, flow force and intensity (flow velocity x water depth). The other methodology seeks to identify areas with potential for inundation considering the entire territory of the municipality. Topographic index of the region and a distance cost matrix (which uses slope and drainage) are the auxiliary variables for determination of this map. Both variables use the digital terrain model. Analysis of risk is essential for planning and intervention in areas susceptible to inundation. Both characterizations of hazard and vulnerability are needed to evaluate risk. The results of the study in Ipojuca can be used for hazard characterization.

As mudanças no uso e na ocupação do solo, provocadas pelas ações antrópicas, têm gerado grandes impactos nas paisagens. Esses impactos podem ser mitigados através do monitoramento do uso e da cobertura do solo utilizando-se informações espaço-temporais das modificações ocorridas na paisagem. Este trabalho apresenta uma análise espaço-temporal detalhada da dinâmica do uso e ocupação do solo da bacia hidrográfica do riacho São Paulo, localizada na região semiárida do Estado de Pernambuco, entre os anos de 1991 e 2010. Partindo da classificação de três imagens de satélite dos anos de 1991, 2000 e 2010, foram utilizadas matrizes de transição, associadas à álgebra de mapas e métricas da paisagem. Os resultados mostraram que durante o período estudado as classes de uso e ocupação do solo passaram por uma grande transição, com a substituição progressiva das áreas de vegetação de caatinga aberta por áreas com pastagem/agricultura. Junto com o rápido crescimento da classe pastagem/agricultura, a paisagem predominante de vegetação nativa foi sendo substituída por uma paisagem cada vez mais devastada, heterogênea e fragmentada, como mostraram os índices das métricas da paisagem.

The changes in the use and occupation of land, caused by human actions, have created major impacts on the landscapes. These impacts can be mitigated by monitoring the use and land cover, using spatial and temporal information of the changes occurring in the landscape. This paper presents a detailed analysis of spatial and temporal dynamics of land use and occupation of the stream São Paulo watershed, located in the semiarid region of Pernambuco State, during the period from 1991 to 2010. Based on the classification of three satellite images for the years 1991, 2000 and 2010, transition matrices were used associated with the algebra of maps, and landscape metrics. The results showed that during the studied period, the classes of land use and occupation went through a major transition, with the gradual replacement of sparse area of 'caatinga' vegetation by grazing areas/agriculture. Along with the rapid growth of the grazing areas/agriculture class, the predominant landscape of native vegetation has been replaced by a landscape increasingly devastated, fragmented and heterogeneous, as shown by the index of landscape metrics.
