Abstract Background Redbean (Phaseolus calcaratus L.) is cultivated as an economic crop in the Mazandaran Province, Iran. Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.) competes severely with red bean growth and reduces yield. Imazethapyr is a selective herbicide recommended for management of grasses and dicotyledonous weeds in different crops including beans. Objectives This research was conducted to develop an empirical model of red bean yield that incorporates the dose-responses of imazethapyr and velvetleaf densities. Methods Modeling of imazethapyr herbicide dose on red bean and velvetleaf competition was conducted using four levels of velvetleaf densities and five dosages of imazethapyr arranged in a factorial design. Results Velvetleaf competitiveness decreased with the increasing imazethapyr dose represented by the standard dose-response curve. A model was improved to composing the dose-response standard curve with the rectangular hyperbola equation. This model estimated red bean economic yield under velvetleaf-free conditions, weed competitivity with no-herbicide application, and the imazethapyr dosage needed to decrease velvetleaf competitiveness about 50%. Imazethapyr at the 0.66 L ha-1 dose was sufficient to control the highest density (12 plants m-2) of velvetleaf. Conclusions Information gained from this study will be important in evaluating economic and environmental terms.

SUMMARY: Intermittent fasting diet (IF) as a restrictive regimen prevents neural degeneration and stimulates overexpression of various neurotropic factors in the hippocampus of animal models. This study evaluates the potential effect of the IF in the prevention of learning and memory dysfunction and improving the alterations in the number and volume of neurons in an ethidium bromide (EB) induced mouse model of demyelination.Mice were randomly assigned into N group (Normal Diet and normal saline injection), F group (IF and normal saline injection), EBN group (Normal Diet and EB injection), EBF group (IF and EB injection). The hidden platform test was carried out based on path length, escape latency and swim speeds of mice. Stereological studies were determined by the Cavalieri and the Optical Dissector technique. Maintenance of mice on the IF results in significantly decreased the body weight and biochemical parameters, increased total number of neurons and volume of the hippocampus, and improved learning and memory parameters of adult male mice. However, IF in EBF group did not show as excellently as F group. The EBF group displayed significantly spatial memory improvement than that in EBN group. There were no statistically significant differences between EBF and EBN groups in stereological and learning parameters, though the EBF group displayed faster escape latencies, and swam faster and shorter path lengths than the EBN group in these parameters. Therefore as a conclusion, The IF fairly improved some adverse effects of EB in experimental demyelination models.

RESUMEN: La dieta de ayuno intermitente (AI) como régimen restrictivo, previene la degeneración neural y la estimación de la presencia de diversos factores neurotrópicos en el hipocampo de modelos animales. Este estudio evalúa el efecto potencial de la AI en la prevención del aprendizaje y la disfunción de la memoria y mejora las alteraciones en el número y el volumen de las neuronas en un modelo de desmielinización, en ratón, inducido con bromuro de etidio (BE). Los ratones se asignaron al azar en el grupo N (dieta normal e inyección salina normal), Grupo A (AI e inyección salina normal), Grupo BEN (dieta normal e inyección BE), Grupo EBF (inyección AI y BE). La prueba de la plataforma oculta se llevó a cabo en función de la longitud del trayecto, la latencia de escape y la velocidad de nado de los ratones. Los estudios estereológicos fueron determinados por la técnica de Cavalieri y la técnica del disector óptico. En el grupo AI disminuyeron significativamente el peso corporal de los ratones, los parámetros bioquímicos, el número total de neuronas y el volumen del hipocampo, y los parámetros de aprendizaje y la memoria de los ratones machos adultos. Sin embargo, el grupo AI en BEF no se mostró tan bien como el grupo A. El grupo EBF mostró una mejora en la memoria espacial significativamente mayor que la del grupo BEN. No hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre los grupos A, BE y BEN en los parámetros estereológicos y de aprendizaje, aunque el grupo EBF mostró latencias de escape más rápidas, y nado en las rutas más rápidas y más cortas que el grupo BEN en estos parámetros. Por lo tanto, como conclusión, el grupo AI mejoró bastante algunos efectos adversos de la BE en los modelos de desmielinización experimental.

RESUMO O presente estudo foi realizado para investigar os efeitos do carvacrol e do exercício em esteira sobre o déficit de memória, comportamento rotacional e biomarcadores de estresse oxidativo em um modelo animal (ratos lesionados por 6-OHDA) da doença de Parkinson (DP). Ratos Wistar foram tratados com carvacrol na dose de 25 mg/kg e/ou correram em uma esteira por uma semana. Depois, 6-OHDA foi microinjetada no feixe do prosencéfalo medial e os tratamentos continuaram por mais seis semanas. A memória aversiva, o comportamento rotacional e biomarcadores de estresse oxidativo foram avaliados no final da semana 6. O grupo 6-OHDA mostrou um aumento significativo no comportamento rotacional e uma diminuição na latência no teste de esquiva passiva em comparação com o grupo “sham”. Estes comportamentos foram acompanhados por aumento dos níveis de peroxidação lipídica e diminuição da concentração total de tiol no estriado e/ou hipocampo de ratos hemiparkinsonianos. Além disso, o tratamento com carvacrol e exercício reduziu o comportamento rotacional e melhorou o déficit de memória aversiva, que foi acompanhado pela diminuição dos níveis de peroxidação lipídica e aumento da concentração total de tiol no estriado e/ou hipocampo. Em conclusão, o tratamento com carvacrol e exercícios em esteira melhorou os déficits motor e de memória, modulando o estresse oxidativo no estriado e no hipocampo de ratos hemiparkinsonianos. Portanto, a combinação de carvacrol e exercício em esteira pode ser uma ferramenta terapêutica eficaz para o tratamento de déficits neurocomportamentais em pacientes com DP.

ABSTRACT The present study was undertaken to investigate the effects of carvacrol and treadmill exercise on memory deficit, rotational behavior and oxidative stress biomarkers in a 6-OHDA-lesioned rat model of Parkinson’s disease. Wistar rats were treated with carvacrol at a dose of 25 mg/kg and/or ran on a treadmill for a week. Then, 6-OHDA was microinjected into the medial forebrain bundle and treatments continued for six more weeks. Aversive memory, rotational behavior and oxidative stress biomarkers were assessed at the end of week six. The 6-OHDA-lesioned group showed a significant increase in rotational behavior and a decrease in step-through latency in the passive avoidance test compared with the sham group. These behaviors were accompanied by increased lipid peroxidation levels and decreased total thiol concentration in the striatum and/or hippocampus of the hemiparkinsonian rats. Moreover, treatment with carvacrol and exercise reduced rotational behavior and improved aversive memory deficit, which was accompanied by decreased lipid peroxidation levels and increased total thiol concentration in the striatum and/or hippocampus. In conclusion, treatment with carvacrol and treadmill exercise ameliorated motor and memory deficits by modulating oxidative stress in the striatum and hippocampus of hemiparkinsonian rats. Therefore, the combination of carvacrol and treadmill exercise could be an effective therapeutic tool for treatment of neurobehavioral deficits in Parkinson’s disease patients.

ABSTRACT The effects of alternating and constant temperatures and light regimes, osmotic and salt stress and pH were tested on seed germination in four populations of Eryngium caeruleum. Laboratory experiments revealed that the four populations exhibited different responses to alternating temperature and light conditions. Alternating temperature and photoperiod had a greater positive effect on seed germination compared to complete darkness. The optimal constant temperature within 10 ºC to 15 ºC for seed germination of each population was determined in a light/dark photoperiod. Seed germination severely decreased under water stress and was completely inhibited at -0.8 MPa osmotic potential. Saline stress sharply decreased germination percentage. Germination was restricted by pH lower and higher than 5 and 8, respectively. The information obtained from this study helps to fill the gap of knowledge about seed germination requirements of E. caeruleum and enhance our understanding of this species distribution and its potential to develop in stressful and/or new habitats.

Shepherd's purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) is a problematic weed in citrus orchards and crop fields in northern Iran. In a series of laboratory and greenhouse experiments, we evaluated the effects that treatment with gibberellic acid (GA3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3), as well as environmental factors, including temperature, the duration of pre-chilling (wet and dry), drought stress, salt stress, pH, and sowing depth, have on seed dormancy breaking and germination in C. bursa-pastoris. Treatment with GA3 strongly stimulated germination of C. bursa-pastoris in conditions of light/dark and continuous darkness. The germination rate was highest (40.08%) for seeds treated with 400 ppm of GA3 in the light/dark condition. Treatment with KNO3 did not significantly influence seed germination. Longer wet pre-chilling promoted germination and was more successful in seed dormancy breaking than was dry pre-chilling. Seed germination occurred at 10-30ºC and within a range of pH of 3-11. Drought and salt stress both strongly inhibited germination. Seedling emergence decreased in proportion to sowing depth. The rates of C. bursa-pastoris germination and seedling emergence were highest for seeds on the soil surface.

We investigated the effectiveness of Nitroxin inoculation on lead (Pb) and nutrient uptakes by little seed canary grass. The factors tested included inoculation (or not) with Nitroxin and different soil concentrations of Pb (0, 200, 400 and 800mgPbkg-1 soil). Increasing soil concentrations of Pb decreased stem, leaf and root dry weights. Shoot phosphorus concentrations increased in parallel with increasing soil Pb concentrations. Nitroxin inoculation did not alter the phosphorus concentration of the roots. The Pb translocation factor was >1 in inoculated treatments in the Pb soil concentration range of 200 to 400mgkg-1; the translocation factor for 800mgPbkg‑1 with no inoculation of Nitroxin was, however, <1. Our results indicated that the Pb bioaccumulation factor for little seed canary grass was <1, indicating that it is a Pb excluding plant.
