ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible protective of C. guianensis oil against MMC and CP, which are direct- and indirect-acting chemical mutagens, using the micronucleus test. Three experiments were performed. First the C. guianensis oil was co-administered to mice at doses of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg bw with 4 mg/kg bw MMC or 50 mg/kg bw CP. Second, the mutagenic drug (CP) was administered ip 50 mg/kg bw and after 6 and 12 hours 250 and 500 mg/kg bw of C. guianensis oil were administered. In the last, C. guianensis oil was administrated (250 and 500 mg/kg bw) during five days and after it was administered ip 50 mg/kg bw CP. The results obtained showed that the C. guianensis oil is not cytotoxic neither genotoxic to mouse bone marrow. Regarding the antimutagenic effect, all doses of C. guianensis oil were significantly (p < 0.05) effective in reducing the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes, when compared with MMC or CP alone. Based on these results, our results suggest that the C. guianensis oil shows medicinal potential as an antimutagenic agent, modulating the mutagenicity caused by both direct- and indirect-acting chemical mutagens, in a mammalian model.

RESUMO Neste estudo foram analisadas as propriedades físico-químicas e fotofísicas do óleo essencial de Curcuma longa, bem como seu potencial angiogênico. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a curcumina é o principal componente fluorescente, mas está presente em pequena quantidade no óleo essencial. O método experimental da membrana corioalantóide foi empregado para avaliar a atividade angiogênica do óleo e foi observado um aumento significativo na rede vascular nos grupos submetidos ao óleo de Curcuma longa e controle positivo, quando comparado com os grupos controle negativo e inibidor (P <0,05), mas não houve diferenças significativas entre o grupo tratado com óleo de Curcuma longa e o controle positivo (P >0,05). A análise histológica mostrou maior neovascularização, hiperemia e elementos inflamatórios nos grupos controle positivo e Curcuma longa quando comparado aos demais grupos controles (P <0,05), fatores característicos do processo de angiogênese. Em conclusão, o óleo de Curcuma longa mostrou uma considerável atividade pró-angiogênica e pode ser um composto com potencial aplicações médicas.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the physicochemical and photophysical properties of essential oil of Curcuma longa and its angiogenic potential. The results showed that curcumin is the main fluorescent component present in the oil, although the amount is relatively small. The experimental chorioallantoic membrane model was used to evaluate angiogenic activity, showing a significant increase in the vascular network of Curcuma longa and positive control groups when compared to the neutral and inhibitor controls (P <0.05), but no significant difference was found between Curcuma longa essential oil and the positive control (P >0.05). Histological analysis showed extensive neovascularization, hyperemia and inflammation in the positive control group and Curcuma longa when compared to other controls (P <0.05), characteristic factors of the angiogenesis process. In conclusion, Curcuma longa oil showed considerable proangiogenic activity and could be a potential compound in medical applications.

La ácaro rojo, Tetranychus urticae es una plaga importante en el rosal (Rosa spp.) siendo el control químico el método más utilizado. Los ácaros Phytoseiidae se utilizan en el control biológico de ácaros plagas. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar el efecto de liberaciones del fitoseido Neoseiulus californicus sobre T. urticae en rosales en invernadero. Además, se estudió la selectividad de algunos plaguicidas para el control de enfermedades y del ácaro rojo. Se realizaron tres experimentos en un diseño completamente al azar con rosal en macetas. Para la infestación se colocaron 20 hembras del ácaro rojo por planta. A los nueve días, entre 0 y 14 ácaros depredadores fueron liberados por planta. Después de 15 días se repitió la liberación en uno de los experimentos. Para la evaluación de la depredación se colectaron al azar hojas de rosal, de las regiones apical, media y basal, contando el número de ácaros vivos. Para determinar la selectividad, se utilizó el método residual de aspersión en superficie de vidrio en laboratorio, mediante una torre de Potter y las dosis más altas recomendadas por los productos. Se evaluó el número de hembras vivas y huevos puestos por el depredador. En conclusión, N. californicus es eficiente en el control de T. urticae en invernadero. El aceite mineral, acefate, tebuconazol, iprodiono, fenpropatrin y abamectin fueron poco perjudiciales para el depredador y pueden ser utilizados en control integrado. En cambio, fenpyroximato fue altamente tóxico al ácaro depredador.

The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae (Tetranychidae), is an important pest in rosebush (Rosa spp.), currently controlled by using agrochemicals. Phytoseiidae mites are used for biological control of pest mites. This study aimed to evaluate the biological control of the T. urticae on rosebushes grown in greenhouse after releases of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (Phytoseiidae). In addition, the selectivity of some agrochemicals for disease and mite control was tested. Three experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design using potted roses. Twenty females per plant of the two-spotted spider mite were placed for infestation. After nine days, 0 to 14 predatory mites per plant were released. After 15 days a new release was made in one of the experiments. Predation was assessed one month after release by randomly collecting rosebush leaves from the apical, medial and basal regions, and the number of living T. urticae was counted. Selectivity was studied by using the laboratory method of residue spraying on a glass surface. Products were sprayed in a Potter tower with the highest doses recommended for the products. The number of live females and eggs laid by the predatory mite were evaluated. It was concluded that N. californicus is efficient in controlling the T. urticae under greenhouse conditions. The mineral oil, acephate, tebuconazole, iprodione, fenpropathrin and abamectin showed to be slightly harmful to the predator and could be used for integrated control. On the other hand, fenpyroximate was highly toxic to the predator mite.

Oligonychus ilicis (McGregor) is among those mite species that can cause damage to coffee plants (Coffea spp.). Species of Phytoseiidae acari are considered the most important and studied predatory mites. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the webbing produced by O.ilicis on its predation by females of the phytoseiids Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma, Euseius citrifolius Denmark & Muma and Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant). Four bioassays were conducted, with three treatments and ten replicates. Each replicate consisted of 25 O.ilicis per experimental unit (a leaf disc of Coffea arabica) according to the tested developmental stage, in independent experiments. To spin the web, 15 adult females were put on each experimental unit for 24h; females were then removed, leaving only the web, and predators and prey to be tested were introduced. Predation was assessed after 24h. In the presence of webbing, the consumption of eggs, larvae and nymphs by I.zuluagai and eggs and larvae by E.citrifolius was lower. For A.herbicolus, egg predation was lower, but larval predation did not vary significantly and predation of nymphs and adults was higher in the presence of webbing. Predators as a whole were more efficient consuming larvae regardless of the presence of webbing. Considering the stages of O.ilicis altogether, webbing reduced the predation potential of I.zuluagai and E. citrifolius, but not of A. herbicolus.

O lúpus eritematoso sistêmico (LES) é uma doença tipicamente multigênica e multifatorial, com grande complexidade clínica e fisiopatológica. As causas do LES não são totalmente conhecidas, mas sabe-se que fatores ambientais e genéticos estão envolvidos. Dentre as várias manifestações clínicas observadas em pacientes com LES, as anemias chamam a atenção principalmente quando se observa nesse estudo uma prevalência de 52,5% dos pacientes com índices hematimétricos sugestivos de anemias. Embora a anemia geralmente já seja observada em pacientes com LES, estudos sobre a prevalência de anemias hereditárias, especialmente as hemoglobinopatias na população com LES, não têm sido conduzidos. O objetivo desse trabalho foi o de avaliar a prevalência das hemoglobinopatias e talassemia em pacientes portadores de LES. Para isso, foram estudadas 80 amostras de sangue de pacientes portadores de lúpus atendidos no ambulatório do Hospital das Clínicas de Goiânia. Foram utilizados testes laboratoriais não moleculares para a detecção das hemoglobinopatias. A freqüência das alterações da hemoglobina foi de 10,0%, encontradas em oito pacientes. Dessas alterações, a mais prevalente foi a talassemia alfa, encontrada em quatro pacientes, correspondendo a uma freqüência de 5,0% da população estudada. Depois, foi o heterozigoto para a hemoglobina S, encontrada em dois pacientes, correspondendo a 2,5% da população, e também outro heterozigoto para a hemoglobina C, encontrada em um paciente, correspondendo a 1,25%, e um paciente com beta talassemia menor, correspondendo a 1,25%. Nenhum caso de homozigose foi encontrado no presente estudo. Este trabalho demonstrou que não houve diferença na prevalência dos distúrbios da hemoglobina entre a população em geral e os portadores de LES.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a typically multigenic and multifatorial disease with remarkable clinical and pathogenic complexities. The causes of SLE are not totally known, but It is known that environmental and genetic factors are involved. Among various clinical manifestations observed in lupus patients, anemia calls the attention because of a prevalence of 52.5% of the patients with RBC indices suggestive of anemia identified in this study. Although anemia is usually seen in patients with SLE, studies of the prevalence of hereditary anemias, particularly hemoglobinopathies, have not been carried out in populations. The objective of this work was to evaluate the prevalence of hemoglobinophaties in patients with SLE. We studied 80 blood samples of patients with SLE in Hospital das Clínicas in Goiania, Brazil. The frequency of alterations of the hemoglobin was 10.0% (8 patients). Among these alterations, the most prevalent was alpha thalassemia in 4 patients (5.0% of the studied population). The heterozygosity for hemoglobin S was seen in 2 patients (2.5%), hemoglobin C in one patient (1.25%) and one patient was identified with beta thalassemia minor. No homozygous cases were found in the present study. According to this work no difference in the prevalence of hemoglobin disorders was observed between general population and patients with SLE.

O ácaro predador Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant) é o segundo fitoseídeo mais abundante em cafeeiro (Coffea arabica L.), após Euseius alatus DeLeon, na região de Lavras, MG, associado ao vetor do vírus da mancha-anular, Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae). Sua história de vida foi estudada levando em conta aspectos biológicos, tabela de vida, atividade predatória e respostas funcional e numérica em função da densidade de presa. Foi constatada longevidade de 38 dias para fêmeas adultas quando alimentadas com B. phoenicis. A estimativa da capacidade inata de crescimento da população (r m) foi 0,150 e a duração média de uma geração (T) 25,3 dias. A população dobrou a cada 4,6 dias. Trinta ácaros B. phoenicis /arena de folha de cafeeiro (3 cm de diâmetro) foram oferecidos separadamente para um espécime de cada fase do ácaro predador. Fêmeas adultas foram mais eficientes na predação de todas as fases do desenvolvimento do ácaro-presa, seguidas das fases ninfais. Para o estudo das respostas funcional e numérica, a presa foi oferecida nas densidades de 0,14 a 42,3 formas imaturas de B. phoenicis /cm² de arena, por serem preferidas para predação. A predação e oviposição de A. herbicolus aumentam com o aumento da densidade de presa, com uma correlação positiva e altamente significativa. A análise de regressão realizada sugere uma resposta funcional do tipo II, com uma predação máxima diária de aproximadamente 35 B. phoenicis /cm² /fêmea adulta.

The predaceous mite Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant) is the second most abundant phytoseiid on coffee plants (Coffea arabica L), after Euseius alatus DeLeon, in Lavras, MG, Brazil, associated to the vector of the coffee ring spot virus, Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae). Its life history was studied taking into account biological aspects, life table, predatory activity and functional and numerical responses in relation to the density of the prey. The adult female has longevity of 38 days when supplied with B. phoenicis. The intrinsic rate of population increase (r m) was 0.150 and the mean generation time (T) 25.3 days. The population doubles every 4.6 days. Thirty mites B. phoenicis /3-cm diameter coffee leaf arenas were separately offered to one specimen of each predator phase. Adult females were more efficient in killing all developmental phases of B. phoenicis, followed by the nymph stages. For the functional and numerical responses studies, from 0.14 to 42.3 immature specimens of the prey /cm² of arena were submitted to the predator, the preferred phase for predation. Predation and the oviposition of A. herbicolus increased with increasing prey density, with a positive and highly significant correlation. Regression analysis suggests a functional type II response, with a maximum daily predation near 35 B. phoenicis /cm² /one adult female.

As anemias hereditárias, que englobam as hemoglobinopatias e talassemias são doenças determinadas geneticamente. Na maioria dos casos os heterozigotos são assintomáticos e desconhecem o defeito genético do qual são portadores. De uma forma geral existe uma deficiência no diagnóstico clínico e laboratorial para a investigação destas doenças que acometem uma parcela significativa da população brasileira. A comunicação deste caso à comunidade científica tem como objetivo destacar a importância de um diagnóstico clínico-laboratorial realizado o mais precocemente. Entretanto, este diagnóstico só é possível se for realizado por um profissional capacitado através de metodologias específicas para a elucidação das mais diferentes interações genéticas. Faz parte também deste diagnóstico o estudo familiar que é estritamente necessário no caso de um possível aconselhamento genético com o intuito de evitar a transmissão genética e conseqüentemente a geração de indivíduos doentes ou com uma sobrevida pequena.

Hereditary anaemias, which include hemoglobinopathies and thalassaemias, are genetically determined diseases. In most cases patients are asymptomatic and do not know about their genetic defect. In general, there is a deficit in the clinical and laboratorial investigations of these diseases that affect a significant number of Brazilians. The reporting of this case aims at highlighting the importance of precocious clinical-laboratorial diagnosis. This diagnosis is only possible if it is performed, by a qualified professional, using specific methodologies to elucidate the varying genetic interactions. A study of the affected families is an essential part of the diagnoses; many cases require genetic counseling to avoid transmission of these anomalies resulting in sick individuals who occasionally have short life expectancies.

Avaliou-se a seletividade fisiológica de alguns produtos fitossanitários utilizados em cafeeiro a larvas de Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) e seus reflexos nas fases subseqüentes do desenvolvimento do predador. Os tratamentos avaliados, em g i.a./L de água foram: 1- endosulfam (Thiodan 350 CE - 1,75), 2- clorpirifós (Lorsban 480 CE - 1,2), 3- betaciflutrina (Turbo 50 CE - 0,013), 4- enxofre (Kumulus 800 PM - 4,0), 5- azociclotina (Peropal 250 PM - 0,31), 6- oxicloreto de cobre (Cuprogarb 500 PM - 5,0) e 7- testemunha (água). As pulverizações foram realizadas em larvas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstares de C. externa, por meio de torre de Potter. Em seguida, as larvas foram individualizadas em tubos de vidro e mantidas em câmara climatizada regulada a 25 ± 2ºC, UR de 70 ± 10% e fotofase de 12h. A toxicidade dos produtos foi calculada em função do seu efeito total (E) e categorizada conforme escala proposta pela IOBC. Clorpirifós e betaciflutrina foram nocivos a larvas de primeiro ínstar (E > 99%) e os demais foram seletivos. Clorpirifós foi também tóxico a larvas de segundo e terceiro ínstares, sendo os demais compostos inócuos ao predador (E < 30%). Nenhum dos produtos avaliados afetou a duração e sobrevivência de pupas, ou a razão sexual e fase adulta dos indivíduos provenientes de larvas tratadas. Endosulfam, enxofre, azociclotina e oxicloreto de cobre foram seletivos para larvas de primeiro, segundo e terceiro ínstares de C. externa e não afetaram as fases subseqüentes do desenvolvimento desse crisopídeo, podendo ser utilizados no manejo de pragas na cultura do cafeeiro.

The objective was to evaluate the selectivity of pesticides used in coffee crops to larvae of Chrysoperla externa (Hagen) and their effects on the subsequent developmental stages of the predator. The treatments in g a.i./L of water were: 1 - endosulfan (Thiodan 350 CE - 1.75), 2 - chlorpyrifos (Lorsban 480 CE - 1.2), 3 - betacyfluthrin (Turbo 50 CE - 0.013), 4 - sulphur (Kumulus 800 PM - 4.0), 5 - azocyclotin (Peropal 250 PM - 0.31), 6 - copper oxichloride (Cuprogarb 500 PM - 5.0) and 7 - control (water). The products were sprayed on first, second and third-instar larvae using a Potter's tower. The larvae were individualized in glass tubes and maintained at 25 ± 2ºC, RH of 70 ± 10% and 12h photophase. The toxicity of the pesticides was calculated based in their total effect (E) and classified according to recommendations of IOBC. Chlorpyrifos and betacyfluthrin were harmful to first-instar larvae (E > 99%). Endosulfan, sulphur, azocyclotin and copper oxichloride were harmless to first-instar larvae and the others were selective. Chlorpyrifos was also toxic to second and third-instar larvae, and the other compounds were selective (E < 30%). None of the pesticides affected the duration and survival rate of pupae or the sex ratio of the adults originated from treated larvae. Endosulfan, sulphur, azocyclotin and copper oxichloride were harmless to the larval stage of C. externa and did not affect the subsequent stages, so that they can be recommended in IPM programs for the coffee crop.

Ácaros da família Phytoseiidae são os inimigos naturais de ácaros-praga mais importantes e estudados. Uma questão freqüentemente levantada é se os fitoseídeos podem reduzir altas densidades de ácaros fitófagos a baixos níveis. Os estudos da resposta funcional e numérica podem contribuir para responder essa pergunta. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial de predação de Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark e Muma e Euseius alatus DeLeon (Acari: Phytoseiidae) como agentes de controle biológico do ácaro fitófago Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), vetor do vírus da leprose-dos-citros e da mancha-anular do cafeeiro. Bioensaios foram realizados em laboratório. Fêmeas adultas de cada predador foram individualizadas em arenas de folha de citros com 3 cm de diâmetro. Fases imaturas de B. phoenicis foram oferecidas, como presas, nas seguintes quantidades/arena: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30 e 35 (com sete repetições), 45 (quatro repetições), 55 (três repetições) e 70, 100, 125, 200 e 300 (duas repetições). O número de presas mortas e de ovos colocados pelo predador foram avaliados a cada 24h, durante oito dias. As presas mortas foram diariamente substituídas por novas presas. Para ambos os ácaros predadores foi constatada uma correlação positiva e altamente significativa entre o número de presas oferecidas e mortas. A oviposição média diária também aumentou em função do número de presas mortas. Nas densidades mais baixas, E. alatus matou mais B. phoenicis do que I. zuluagai, e o contrário foi observado nas densidades mais altas. É possível que E. alatus possa reduzir a população de B. phoenicis mesmo em baixas densidades do ácaro fitófago, e que I. zuluagai possa fazer o mesmo nas mais altas. O fato de E. alatus necessitar de menos presas que I. zuluagai sugere que sua sobrevivência possa ser maior do que a de I. zuluagai sob baixa densidade de presa.

Phytoseiidae mites are the most important and studied natural enemies of pest mites. A question frequently raised is whether phytoseiid may reduce high densities of phytophagous mites. Studies of functional and numerical responses may help to answer this question. The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential predation success of Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark and Muma and Euseius alatus DeLeon (Acari: Phytoseiidae) on Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), vector of the citrus leprosis and the coffee ringspot viruses. Bioassays were performed in the laboratory. Adult females of each predator were isolated in arenas made with citrus leaves (3-cm diameter). Immature stages of B. phoenicis were offered as prey, at the following numbers/arena: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 35 (seven replicates), 45 (four replicates), 55 (three replicates) and 70, 100, 125, 200 and 300 (two replicates). The number of killed prey and of eggs laid by the predators was evaluated every 24h, during eight days. Killed prey was replaced daily by new prey. For both predatory mites, a positive and highly significant correlation was found between the numbers of prey offered and killed. The average daily oviposition rate also increased with the number of killed prey. At the lower densities, E. alatus killed and ate more B. phoenicis than I. zuluagai. The opposite was observed at the highest densities. It is possible that E. alatus can reduce B. phoenicis population even at low prey densities, and I. zuluagai can do the same also at high densities. The fact that E. alatus requires less prey than I. zuluagai suggests that its survivorship may be higher than that of I. zuluagai at low prey densities.

Cochonilhas-farinhentas (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) das raízes do cafeeiro (Coffea arabica L.) coletadas em Boa Esperança, Estado de Minas Gerais, foram identificadas como Dysmicoccus texensis (Tinsley) (= bispinosus Beardsley) e da parte aérea dos cafeeiros em Castelo, Estado do Espírito Santo, como Planococcus minor (Maskell). Porém, na literatura brasileira são citadas outras espécies de pseudococcídeos em cafeeiros, Pseudococcus cryptus Hempel nas raízes e Planococcus citri (Risso) na parte aérea. Assim, é possível que mais de uma espécie de cochonilhas-farinhentas possam estar ocorrendo nas raízes e na parte aérea dos cafeeiros, tornando os levantamentos e estudos taxonômicos necessários para o estabelecimento de programas de controle, sobretudo o biológico.

Root coffee (Coffea arabica L.) mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) collected in Boa Esperança, southern Minas Gerais State, were identified as Dysmicoccus texensis (Tinsley) (= bispinosus Beardsley) and these from aerial part collected in Castelo, State of the Espírito Santo, as Planococcus minor (Maskell). However, Brazilian literature mentions other mealybug species of coffee tree as Pseudococcus cryptus Hempel in roots and Planococcus citri (Risso) in the aerial part. Therefore, more than one mealybug species may be occurring in the roots as in aerial part of coffee trees, and the survey and taxonomic studies are necessary before setting a control program, specially biological control.

Através de bioensaios realizados em arenas com 3 cm de diâmetro, confeccionadas com folhas de cafeeiro flutuando em água, foram estudadas as fases do ácaro da mancha-anular do cafeeiro Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) quanto à preferência pelos diversos estádios do desenvolvimento dos ácaros predadores Euseius alatus DeLeon e Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em laboratório a 25 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% de UR e 14 horas de fotofase. O estádio do ácaro vetor mais predado foi o de larva, seguido pelo de ninfa e ovo. A fase adulta teve muito pouca predação. De modo geral, a fase mais agressiva dos predadores foi a de fêmea adulta, seguida pela de ninfa. A fase de larva foi a menos eficiente na predação. As médias de predação de E. alatus e I. zuluagai para as diferentes fases do B. phoenicis foram respectivamente: larva (79% e 90%) > ovo (47% e 83%) > ninfa (40% e 77%) > adulto (1% e 18%), o que demonstra que I. zuluagai mostrou maior atividade predatória que E. alatus.

By means of bioassays performed in arenas of 3 cm in diameter, manufactured with coffee leaves floating on water, the phases of the coffee ringspot mite Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) were studies on the preference by several developmental stages of the predaceous mites Euseius alatus DeLeon and Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma. The experiment was conducted in laboratory at 25 ± 2ºC, 70 ± 10% RH and 14 h photophase. The preferred stage of coffee ringspot vector virus was the larva followed by nymph and egg. Adults were least preyed on. In general, the most aggressive phase of the predators was the adult female followed by the nymph; the larval phase was the least aggressive. The average predation of E. alatus and I. zuluagai for the different phases of B. phoenicis were, respectively: larva (79% and 90%) > egg (47% and 83%) > nymph (40% and 77%) > adult (1% and 18%). This result indicated that I. zuluagai is more aggressive than E. alatus in relation to its predation upon B. phoenicis.

A distribuição espacial do ácaro Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), vetor da mancha-anular em cafeeiro (Coffea arabica L.), foi estudada com o objetivo de conhecer os locais preferidos pelo ácaro, e assim visando seu controle. Contagens de ácaros em todos os estádios do desenvolvimento foram realizadas nas folhas, ramos e frutos nos terços inferior, médio e superior, da parte interna e externa das plantas. Constatou-se que B. phoenicis ocorreu em maior quantidade em folhas internas, ramos e frutos dos terços inferior e médio das plantas de café. Nas folhas, os ácaros localizavam-se predominantemente na página inferior, próximos às nervuras, principalmente a central. Nos frutos, ovos e ácaros foram encontrados preferencialmente na região da coroa e pedúnculo. Nos ramos, foram frequentemente encontrados abrigados nas fendas existentes na casca, e também nos nós.

The spatial distribution of the false spider mite Brevipalpus phoenicis (Geijskes) (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), vector of the ringspot virus, was studied in coffee plants (Coffea arabica L.), in order to assess the mite preferred sites. Samples were taken throughout leaves, branches and berries, from lower, medium and superior parts of the plants. The inner and the outer side of the plants were compared. All development stages of the mites were recorded. B. phoenicis was mostly found on the internal leaves, branches and berries, in the lower and medium parts of the plants. On the leaves, mites were localized mostly at the lower leaf surface, mainly next to the midrib. On the berries, eggs and mites were found mainly at the crown and peduncle. On the branches, they were found in the nodes and coat gap.

A ocorrência das espécies de ácaros predadores pertencentes à família Phytoseiidae, em folhas de laranjeira `Valência' (Citrus sinensis Osbeck), foi avaliada durante três anos em Lavras (MG), através de levantamentos quinzenais. Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma e Euseius alatus DeLeon foram as espécies mais freqüentes, a primeira representando 66,2% dos ácaros coletados e a segunda 29,8%. Ambos os ácaros foram encontrados ao longo de todos os anos, sendo que I. zuluagai apresentou maior ocorrência entre abril e setembro (outono e inverno), período de temperaturas amenas e baixa precipitação pluvial. A espécie E. alatus, ao contrário, apresentou maior ocorrência entre outubro e fevereiro, que correspondeu a um período de temperaturas elevadas e alta precipitação pluvial. Outras espécies levantadas e respectivas porcentagens de ocorrência foram: Amblyseius compositus Denmark & Muma (2,6 %), Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant) (1,1 %) e Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) (0,3 %), sendo A. compositus a mais freqüente e as demais ocasionais.

A survey of the species of predaceous mites belonging to the Phytoseiidae family was run every other week for a three-year period on 'Valencia' orange tree leaves (Citrus sinensis Osbeck) in Lavras, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma and Euseius alatus DeLeon were the most frequent, the first one representing 66.2% and the second 29.8% of the collected mites. Both were found during the whole period, and I. zuluagai occurred mostly between April and September (autumn and winter), period of mild temperatures and low rainfalls. The species E. alatus, presented higher occurrence between October and February that corresponded to the higher temperatures and pluvial precipitation period. Other surveyed species and percentages of occurrence were: Amblyseius compositus Denmark & Muma (2,6%), Amblyseius herbicolus (Chant) (1,1%) and Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) (0,3%), being A. compositus the most frequent; the other species were occasional.

Testes de efeito adverso de agroquímicos sobre Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) foram conduzidos em laboratório, utilizando o método residual de contato com pulverização em superfície de vidro. Foram testados 42 produtos químicos, a maioria utilizada na citricultura brasileira. A mortalidade e o efeito dos produtos na reprodução do ácaro foram avaliados diariamente durante oito dias. Os produtos foram classificados quanto ao efeito total causado ao ácaro (combinação da mortalidade e efeito na reprodução) em quatro classes de toxicidade propostas pela IOBC/WPRS. Os resultados mostraram que cerca de 26% dos produtos testados foram inócuos (captan, clofentezine, fenbutatin oxide, fosetyl, hexythiazox, hidróxido de cobre, naled, oxicloreto de cobre, óxido cuproso e tetradifon), 14% levemente nocivos (abamectin, chlorothalonil, sulfato de cobre, thiophanate-methyl (PM) e ziram), 7% moderadamente nocivos (enxofre, parathion-methyl e thiophanate-methyl (SC)) e 52% nocivos ao ácaro (acrinathrin, amitraz, azinphos-ethyl, azocyclotin, benomyl, bifenthrin, bromopropylate, carbaryl, carbosulfan, chlorfenapyr, cyhexatin, dicofol, fenpropathrin, fenpyroximate, mancozeb, óleo mineral e vegetal, phosmet, propargite, quinomethionate, triazophos, e vamidothion).

The side-effects of agrochemical to Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) were studied in laboratory using the residual contact spray method in glass surface. Forty-two plant protection products, used in Brazilian citrus orchards, were tested. Mite mortality and fecundity were evaluated for eight days. Tested products were ranked in toxicity classes, according to IOBC/WPRS system, by the total effect (combination of mortality and reproduction effect). The results showed that ca. 26% of the tested products were harmless (captan, clofentezine, fenbutatin oxide, fosetyl, hexythiazox, copper hydroxide, naled, copper oxychloride, cuprous oxide and tetradifon), 14% slightly harmful (abamectin, chlorothalonil, copper sulphate, thiophanate-methyl (PM) and ziram), 7% moderately harmful (sulfur, parathion-methyl and thiophanate-methyl (SC)) and 52% harmful to the mite (acrinathrin, amitraz, azinphos-ethyl, azocyclotin, benomyl, bifenthrin, bromopropylate, carbaryl, carbosulfan, chlorfenapyr, cyhexatin, dicofol, fenpropathrin, fenpyroximate, mancozeb, mineral and vegetable oils, phosmet, propargite, quinomethionate, triazophos and vamidothion).

Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) é um ácaro predador comumente encontrado em plantas cítricas (Citrus spp.). Alimentado com pólen de mamoneira (Ricinus communis ) e a 25 ± 2°C, 70 ± 10% de UR e 14 horas de fotofase, a maioria das larvas eclodiu entre 12 e 24 horas. A duração do estágio de larva foi freqüentemente em torno de 24 horas, e a duração das fases de protoninfa e deutoninfa entre 24 e 48 horas. O ciclo de ovo a adulto durou 5 a 6 dias. A estimativa da capacidade inata de crescimento da população (r m) foi 0,122 fêmeas/ fêmea/ dia; a duração média de uma geração (T) 18,7 dias; a taxa líquida de reprodução (Ro) 9,82 fêmeas/ fêmea e a razão finita de aumento (1)1,13.

Iphiseiodes zuluagai Denmark & Muma (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is a predaceous mite commonly found on citrus plants (Citrus spp.) in Brazil. With castor bean (Ricinus communis) pollen as food and 25 ± 2 °C, 70 ± 10% RH and 14 hours of photophase, most of the eggs hatched after ca.12 to 24 hours. The larval and protonymph stage duration was ca. 24 hours each, and ca. 48 hours for deutonymph. The life cycle from egg to adult lasted 5-6 days. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m) was 0.122 females/ female/ day, the mean generation time (T) 18.7 days, the net reproductive rate (Ro) 9.82 females/ female and, the finite rate of increase (1) 1.13.
