RESUMO: Pombos urbanos são conhecidos pela sua capacidade de carrear e disseminar diversos agentes zoonóticos. Estudos tem sugerido que pombos são também relevantes na disseminação de estirpes resistentes a múltiplas drogas. No presente estudo, pombos no ambiente de um hospital veterinário foram amostrados em três diferentes períodos e testados para a presença de Escherichia coli patogênica, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus spp. e Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile. Isolados de E. coli de 19 pombos (40.4%) foram positivos para o gene codificador da toxina EAST1. O gene codificador de intimina (eae) do patotipo E. coli enteropatogênica foi encontrada em um isolado (2.1%). Salmonella spp. foi encontrada em nove pombos (19.1%), sendo todos isolados do primeiro período de captura (P < 000.1). S. Typhimurium foi isolado de seis animais e S. Heidelberg de três. A tipagem molecular de isolados de Salmonella spp. por ERIC-PCR demonstrou que oito estirpes possuíam alta similaridade genética entre si, sugerindo a ocorrência de um surto de salmonelose nos animais carreadores. Vinte Staphylococcus (42.5%) foram isolados de 18 animais (38.3%). Oito diferentes espécies foram detectadas, sendo S. xylosus a mais frequente. Duas estirpes de C. difficile não-toxigênica (4.3%) foram isoladas. Uma estirpe de S. Typhimurium, uma de S. aureus e um isolado de C. difficile foram classificados como resistentes a múltiplas drogas antimicrobianas. O presente estudo sugere que pombos capturados no ambiente do hospital veterinário podem atuar como reservatórios e disseminadores de bactérias patogênicas e envolvidas em infecção hospitalar, incluindo E. coli diarreiogênica e Staphylococcus sp., C. difficile e Salmonella spp multirresistente.

ABSTRACT: Pigeons are known for their capacity to harbor and spread several zoonotic agents. Studies have suggested that pigeons are also relevant disseminators of multidrug-resistant strains. In this study, pigeons surrounding a veterinary hospital were sampled and tested for the presence of pathogenic Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Staphylococcus spp., and Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile. E. coli isolates from 19 (40.4%) pigeons tested positive for the E. coli heat-stable enterotoxin 1 (EAST1)-encoding gene. The intimin-encoding gene (eae) of enteropathogenicE. coli (EPEC) was found in one isolate (2.1%). Salmonella spp. were found in nine (19.1%) pigeons, all from the first capture event (P < 000.1). S. Typhimurium and S. Heidelberg were isolated from six and three pigeons, respectively. Enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC-PCR) of the Salmonella spp. isolates suggested that eight of the nine strains had a high genetic similarity, supporting the hypothesis of an outbreak of salmonellosis in these pigeons. Twenty (42.5%) staphylococcal isolates were recovered from 18 (38.3%) pigeons. Eight different species were detected, with S. xylosus being the most frequent. Two (4.3%) C. difficile strains were isolated. Three isolates, one each of S. Typhimurium, S. aureus, and C. difficile, were classified as multidrug-resistant strains. The present research suggested that pigeons residing in urban areas can act as reservoirs and disseminators of pathogenic bacteria, including nosocomial pathogens, such as diarrheagenicE. coli and multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus spp., C. difficile, and Salmonella spp.

Abstract Objective To evaluate clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients infected with HIV, and to compare with a paired sample without HIV infection. Methods This is a substudy of a Brazilian multicentric cohort that comprised two periods (2020 and 2021). Data was obtained through the retrospective review of medical records. Primary outcomes were admission to the intensive care unit, invasive mechanical ventilation, and death. Patients with HIV and controls were matched for age, sex, number of comorbidities, and hospital of origin using the technique of propensity score matching (up to 4:1). They were compared using the Chi-Square or Fisher's Exact tests for categorical variables and the Wilcoxon for numerical variables. Results Throughout the study, 17,101 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, and 130 (0.76%) of those were infected with HIV. The median age was 54 (IQR: 43.0;64.0) years in 2020 and 53 (IQR: 46.0;63.5) years in 2021, with a predominance of females in both periods. People Living with HIV (PLHIV) and their controls showed similar prevalence for admission to the ICU and invasive mechanical ventilation requirement in the two periods, with no significant differences. In 2020, in-hospital mortality was higher in the PLHIV compared to the controls (27.9% vs. 17.7%; p = 0.049), but there was no difference in mortality between groups in 2021 (25.0% vs. 25.1%; p > 0.999). Conclusions Our results reiterate that PLHIV were at higher risk of COVID-19 mortality in the early stages of the pandemic, however, this finding did not sustain in 2021, when the mortality rate is similar to the control group. Resumen Desafiado a pensar sobre cómo la blanquitud es una categoría de análisis para la psicología social, un par de investigadoras blancas formulan la siguiente pregunta de investigación: ¿Cómo se constituye la blanquitud como modo de subjetivación? Para desplazar cualquier supuesta neutralidad y universalidad, aún presente en el campo de la psicología social, el objetivo del estudio fue producir efectos de visibilidad en los procesos de subjetivación racistas contemporáneos. El recorrido cartográfico fue impulsado por el uso de la producción de narrativas poéticas, basadas en las experiencias de los investigadores desde un lugar racializado. Esta estrategia metodológica buscó problematizar la blanquitud engendrada por las tecnologías de subjetivación. Abstract Challenged to think about how whiteness is a category of analysis for social psychology, two white researchers take the following research question as the trigger: How whiteness is constituted as a mode of subjectivation? In order to displace any supposed neutrality and universality, still present in the field of social psychology, the aim of the study was to produce visibility effects in contemporary racist subjectivation processes. The cartographic journey was driven by the use of the production of poetic narratives, based on the researchers' experiences from a racialized place. This methodological strategy sought to problematize the whiteness engendered by subjectivation technologies. RESUMO: Os objetivos do presente estudo foram (i) genotipar amostras de Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, C. silvaticum e C. auriscanis usando Enterobacterial Repetitive Intergenic Consensus (ERIC-PCR), bem como (ii) analisar as relações epidemiológicas entre os isolados de acordo com biovar (Equi e Ovis), espécie, hospedeiro e origem geográfica das amostras de C. pseudotuberculosis. Sessenta e oito isolados de C. pseudotuberculosis, nove C. silvaticum, um C. auriscanis, C. pseudotuberculosis ATCC® 19410 ™ e a amostra vacinal atenuada C. pseudotuberculosis 1002 foram tipificadas por ERIC 1 + 2-PCR. As amostras de campo foram isoladas de diferentes hospedeiros (bovinos, búfalos, ovinos, caprinos, equinos, cães e suínos) em seis países (México, Portugal, Brasil, Guiné Equatorial, Egito e Israel). Uma alta diversidade genética foi observada entre os isolados de Corynebacterium spp., agrupados em vinte e quatro genótipos com um índice de diversidade Hunter & Gaston (HGDI) de 0,937. A análise da minimal spanning tree (MST) de Corynebacterium spp. revelou três complexos clonais, cada um associado a uma espécie bacteriana. Vinte e dois genótipos foram observados entre isolados de C. pseudotuberculosis, com um HGDI de 0,934. Na análise da MST, três grandes complexos clonais foram formados, agrupando-se em torno da origem geográfica dos isolados de C. pseudotuberculosis. Esses resultados reforçam a alta tipabilidade, concordância epidemiológica e poder discriminatório do ERIC-PCR como método consistente de genotipagem para C. pseudotuberculosis, podendo ser útil como ferramenta epidemiológica no controle da linfadenite caseosa. Além disso, os resultados também indicam o grande potencial de ERIC 1 + 2-PCR para genotipagem de espécies do gênero Corynebacterium além de C. pseudotuberculosis.

ABSTRACT: The aims of the present study were (i) to genotype Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, C. silvaticum, and C. auriscanis strains using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC-PCR), and (ii) to analyze the epidemiological relationships among isolates according to biovar (Equi and Ovis), species, host, and geographical origin of the C. pseudotuberculosis strains. Sixty-eight C. pseudotuberculosis, nine C. silvaticum, and one C. auriscanis, C. pseudotuberculosis ATCC® 19410™ strain and the attenuated C. pseudotuberculosis 1002 vaccinal strain were fingerprinted by ERIC 1+2-PCR. Field strains were isolated from various hosts (cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goats, horses, dogs, and pigs) in six countries (Mexico, Portugal, Brazil, Equatorial Guinea, Egypt, and Israel). High genetic diversity was found among the studied Corynebacterium spp. isolates, clustering in 24 genotypes with a Hunter & Gaston diversity index (HGDI) of 0.937. The minimal spanning tree of Corynebacterium spp. revealed three clonal complexes, each associated with one bacterial species. Twenty-two genotypes were observed among C. pseudotuberculosis isolates, with an HGDI of 0.934. Three major clonal complexes were formed at the minimal spanning tree, grouped around the geographic origin of C. pseudotuberculosis isolates. These results reinforce the high typeability, epidemiological concordance, and discriminatory power of ERIC-PCR as a consistent genotyping method for C. pseudotuberculosis, which could be useful as an epidemiological tool to control caseous lymphadenitis. Moreover, our results also indicate the potential of ERIC 1+2-PCR for the genotyping of other species of Corynebacterium other than C. pseudotuberculosis.

RESUMO Objetivo: Medir a acuidade visual em alto e baixo contraste nas diversas graduações de transparência de filmes em três janelas de veículos: frontal, lateral e traseira. Métodos: Foram avaliados 44 voluntários saudáveis entre 30 e 75 anos, com acuidade visual melhor corrigida acima de 0,5, em cinco veículos, sendo: veículo 1, com 75% de transparência frontal e 70% na lateral e traseira; veículo 2, com 70% na frontal e na lateral e 28% na traseira; veículo 3, com 70% na frontal, 28% na lateral e 15% na traseira; veículo 4, com 35% nas três janelas; e veículo 5, com 50% na frontal, 20% na lateral e 15% na traseira. Foi realizada estatística descritiva utilizando a média de três medidas consecutivas, com teste de Wilcoxon para comparar a média de acuidade visual em cada janela, e foi considerado estatisticamente significativo quando valor de p<0,05. Resultados: Todas as transparências testadas nos vidros reduziram a acuidade visual em situação de baixo contraste para níveis limítrofes na janela frontal e níveis ilegais na lateral para conduzir veículos nas categorias C/D/E. Na janela traseira, tanto em alto quanto em baixo contraste, todas as transparências mostraram redução da acuidade visual para níveis ilegais para categorias C/D/E e limítrofes para as categorias A/B, exceto na transparência de 35%. Conclusão: A acuidade visual é reduzida pelo uso dos filmes automotivos, especialmente na janela traseira. Condutores de veículos com filmes devem ser alertados pelo risco aumentado de acidentes. Esse dado científico propõe revisões nas regulações de tráfego mundiais.

ABSTRACT Objective: To measure visual acuity in high contrast and low contrast sensitivities in different grades of visible light transmission films in three different positions (front, lateral and rear windows). Methods: Forty-four healthy volunteers between 30-75 y-o, with BCVA better than 0,5, were tested in the 5 following vehicles with different grades of visible light transmission films. Vehicle 1: 75% in the front and 70% in the lateral and rear windows; Vehicle 2: 70% in the front and lateral windows and 28% in the rear; Vehicle 3: 70% in the front, 28% in the lateral and 15% rear; Vehicle 4: 35% in all 3 windows; Vehicle 5: 50% in the front, 20% in the lateral and 15% in the rear. Descriptive statistics were used and the average of the 3 measurements of VA was considered. Wilcoxon Test was applied to compare the average visual acuity in each vehicle and position. P value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: According to the Brazilian Traffic Regulations for driving in categories C/D/E, when low contrast was tested in the front window, all visible light transmissions were borderline, in the lateral window they were all outside the limit, while in the rear window for both low and high contrast, all visible light transmissions tested were outside the limit and also borderline for driving in categories A/B, with the exception of the vehicle with visible light transmission of 35%. Conclusion: Visual acuity is affected, especially in the rear window, by the use of automotive films. The study is an alert that window films is a possible cause of accidents and may contribute to the revision of traffic regulations worldwide.

RESUMO: Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile é o principal agente envolvido em diarreias associadas ao uso de antimicrobianos em seres humanos e um enteropatógeno de grande relevância em quadros de diarreia em potros e equinos adultos. Em adição, estudos tem sugerido que animais são possíveis reservatórios de estirpes toxigênicas de C. difficile para humanos. Apesar da importância na saúde animal e humana, a epidemiologia da infecção por C. difficile (ICD) é ainda pouco conhecida. Dessa forma, o presente estudo tem como objetivo caracterizar seis casos de diarreia por C. difficile ocorridos em Minas Gerais, Brasil. Com exceção de um animal, todos os equinos incluídos no presente estudo desenvolveram ICD após antibioticoterapia, três dos quais durante a hospitalização. Coinfecção por Salmonella Heidelberg e S. Infantis foi detectada em três casos, tornando o tratamento antimicrobiano desafiador. Todos os animais recuperaram após administração de metronidazol. Os isolados obtidos no presente estudo foram sensíveis a metronidazol e vancomicina, porém três estirpes foram resistentes a moxifloxacina e duas a clindamicina. Os isolados foram classificados como ribotipos 126 (n=4), 078 (n=1) e 014/020 (n=1), todos previamente relatados em seres humanos com ICD no Brasil e em outros países.

ABSTRACT: Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile is the main causative agent of antimicrobial-related diarrhea in humans and a major pathogen-associated enteric disorder in foals and adult horses. Moreover, studies have suggested that animals are a possible reservoir of toxigenic C. difficile strains for humans. Despite this known importance, the epidemiology of C. difficile infection (CDI) in equine is still largely unknown. Therefore, this study described six cases of equine CDI occurring in Minas Gerais, Brazil, including the characterization of the isolates. All but one equine included in this research developed CDI after antimicrobial therapy, three of which occurred during hospitalization. Coinfection with Salmonella Heidelberg and S. Infantis was detected in three cases, making the antimicrobial treatment challenging. All animals recovered after metronidazole administration. All C. difficile isolates were susceptible to metronidazole and vancomycin, while three were resistant to moxifloxacin and two were resistant to clindamycin. The isolates were classified as RT126 (n = 4), RT078 (n = 1), and RT014/020 (n = 1), all previously reported infecting humans and animals worldwide.

RESUMO Introdução: Mastócitos podem participar da inflamação e contribuir para fibrose na nefrite lúpica (NL). Objetivo: Correlacionar mastócitos em biópsias renais (BR) de pacientes pediátricos com NL com índices de atividade (IA) e cronicidade (IC), avaliando sua efetividade como fator prognóstico. Metodologia: Foram estudados 40 pacientes, entre 6 e 18 anos, diagnosticados com NL pelo Serviço de Nefropatologia da UFTM entre 1996 e 2015. Dados laboratoriais e epidemiológicos foram correlacionados com IA, IC e contagem de mastócitos (CM). Resultados: Encontramos correlação positiva e significativa entre contagem de mastócitos (CM) e IA (p = 0,003; r: 0,66) e entre CM e IC (p = 0,048; r: 0,48). Conforme a curva Roc, os mastócitos têm alta sensibilidade e especificidade na diferenciação de pacientes com IA menor ou maior do que 12. A creatinina sérica foi mais elevada na classe IV em relação à classe V [1,50 (0,40 - 20,90) versus 0,70 (0,62 - 0,90), p = 0,04]. Ureia sérica apresentou correlação positiva e significativa com CM (p = 0,002; r: 0,75). Observou-se tendência à correlação negativa entre CM e albumina sérica (p = 0,06; r: -0,5459). BR de pacientes com síndrome nefrótica apresentaram maior CM [2,12 (0,41 - 5,140) versus 0,53 (0,0 - 3,94), p = 0,07]. Conclusão: Não apenas o infiltrado inflamatório como também a diferenciação morfológica dos tipos celulares que o constituem são importantes para a avaliação da NL. Isso indica que a análise dos mastócitos, juntamente com a dos IA e IC, pode ajudar os nefrologistas a definirem o prognóstico de pacientes pediátricos.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Mast cells may be involved in inflammation and contribute to the onset of fibrosis in lupus nephritis (LN). Objective: This study aimed to correlate the presence of mast cells in kidney biopsy specimens of pediatric patients with LN with activity (AI) and chronicity (CI) indices and assess how effectively mast cells may be used as a prognostic factor. Method: The study included 40 patients aged 6-18 years diagnosed with LN at the Renal Disease Service of the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro between 1996 and 2015. Workup and epidemiological data were evaluated vis-à-vis AI, CI, and mast cell counts (MCC). Results: Significant positive correlations were found between mast cell counts (MCC) and AI (p = 0.003; r: 0.66) and MCC and CI (p = 0.048; r: 0.48). The ROC curve showed that mast cells were highly sensitive and specific in the differentiation of patients with an AI > 12 from individuals with an AI ≤ 12. Serum creatinine levels were higher in individuals with class IV LN than in patients with class V disease [1.50 (0.40-20.90) vs. 0.70 (0.62-0.90), p = 0.04]. Blood urea nitrogen had a positive significant correlation with MCC (p = 0.002; r: 0.75). A trend toward a negative correlation was observed between MCC and serum albumin (p = 0.06; r: -0.5459). Kidney biopsies of patients with nephrotic syndrome had higher MCC [2.12 (0.41-5.140) vs. 0.53 (0.0-3.94), p = 0.07]. Conclusion: Inflammatory cell infiltration and morphological differences between cell types in the inflammatory infiltrate are relevant factors in the assessment of the LN. Mast cell analysis and AI/CI assessment may be relevant prognostic indicators for pediatric patients with LN.

Resumo Ipomoea pes-caprae (Convolvulaceae), conhecida popularmente como “salsa-da-praia”, é usada na medicina popular para o tratamento de várias doenças, incluindo a hipertensão. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a atividade hipotensora atribuída a essa espécie e identificar os compostos bioativos responsáveis por esse efeito. O extrato hidroalcoólico das partes aéreas de Ipomoea pes-caprae (PIEA) foi fracionado por cromatografia em coluna com Amberlite XAD-2, obtendo-se uma fração metanólica (PIEA-M). A investigação do perfil químico de PIEA-M foi realizada por Cromatografia :íquida de Ultra-Eficiência acoplada a Espectrometria de Massas (CLUE-EM) e isolamento de compostos por Cromatografia Contracorrente de Alto Desempenho (CCCAD). Avaliações hemodinâmicas dos PIEA, PIEA-M e compostos isolados foram realizadas em ratos normotensos. A atividade locomotora de PIEA e PIEA-M foi realizada pelo teste de Rota Rod usando camundongos suíços. A análise CLUE-EM do PIEA-M levou à identificação de 11 substâncias correspondentes a sete ácidos fenólicos e quatro flavonoides. Por meio de CCCAD, a quercetina 6”-O-acetil-3-O-glicosídeo (1), uma mistura de quercetina-3-O-galactosídeo e quercetina-3-O-glicosídeo (2) e quercetina 3-O-glicosídeo (3) foram isolados. PIEA, PIEA-M e as substâncias obtidas (1 e 2) reduziram significativamente a pressão sanguínea. Além disso, o PIEA e o PIEA-M causaram um prejuízo significativo na atividade locomotora dos camundongos. Estes resultados indicam o potencial de Ipomoea pes-caprae como fonte de agentes hipotensores, sugerindo que os compostos fenólicos presentes na espécie são responsáveis por sua atividade hipotensora.

Abstract Ipomoea pes-caprae (Convolvulaceae), popularly known as “salsa-da-praia”, is used in folk medicine for the treatment of several diseases, including hypertension. The aim of this research was to evaluate hypotensive activity attributed to this species and identify the bioactive compounds responsible for this effect. Hydroalcoholic extract of aerial parts of Ipomoea pes-caprae (PIEA) was fractionated by column chromatography with Amberlite XAD-2, thus achieving a methanolic fraction (PIEA-M). The chemical profile investigation of PIEA-M was conducted by Ultra Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (UPLC-MS) and compound isolation through High Performance Countercurrent Chromatography (HPCCC). Hemodynamic evaluations of PIEA, PIEA-M and isolated compounds were carried out on normotensive rats. The locomotor activity of PIEA and PIEA-M were performed by Rota Rod test using Swiss mice. UPLC-MS analysis of PIEA-M led to the identification of 11 compounds corresponding to seven phenolic acids and four flavonoids. By means of HPCCC, quercetin 6”-O-acetyl-3-O- glucoside (1), a mixture of quercetin-3-O-galactoside and quercetin-3-O- glucoside (2) and quercetin 3-O-glucoside (3) were isolated. PIEA, PIEA-M and the obtained compounds (1 and 2) significantly reduced blood pressure. Also, PIEA and PIEA-M caused significant impairment on mice locomotor activity. These results indicate the potential of Ipomoea pes-caprae as a source of hypotensive agents suggesting that phenolic compounds present in the species are responsible for its hypotensive activity.

Abstract Given the determining factor that constitutes land use change (LUC) upon biodiversity loss and environmental deterioration, cocoa-shade agroforestry systems can represent an important land area for biodiversity conservation and carbon storage. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the age of the cocoa agroforestry systems on their shade tree diversity and carbon stocks. Two-hundred and fifty-eight plots were compared in eleven cocoa plots between 10 and 70 yr-old, totalizing 7.87 ha. The normal tree girth (DN) and total height of all trees > 5 cm DN were measured, and their estimated biomass were compared using a general and a species-specific allometric equation to know the discrepancy between both methods. The 70 yr-old plantations presented more species per hectare (23), Shannon diversity index (2.0) and carbon storage (75 Mg ha-1) than the 10 yr-old plantations (p < 0.01; mean values of 10 Mg ha-1, 1.1 Mg ha-1 and 36 Mg ha-1; respectively). Specific allometric equations estimated 27.7% (p = 0.05) more aboveground biomass than the general equation, so they are considered as more precise to this specific agroforestry system and hence are recomended. It is concluded that, particularly for México, conservation of mature cocoa-agroforestry systems contribute to the conservation of tree biodiversity and carbon stocks of tropical vegetation, resembling relics of the original vegetation.

Resumen Ante el impacto que representa el cambio de uso de suelo en la pérdida de biodiversidad y deterioro del medio ambiente, los sistemas agroforestales de cacao de sombra son una alternativa para la conservación de biodiversidad y almacén de carbono. El objetivo de este trabajo fue conocer el efecto de la edad de los sistemas agroforestales de cacao en la diversidad arbórea y almacenes de carbono de su vegetación de sombra. Se compararon 258 parcelas distribuidas en once sistemas agroforestales entre 10 años y 70 años, totalizando 7.87 ha. Dentro de cada parcela se midió el diámetro normal (DN) y altura total de todos los árboles >5 cm (DN) para estimar su biomasa aérea con una ecuación general y otra específica, y conocer la discrepancia de ambos métodos. Los sistemas agroforestales de 70 años presentaron en promedio más especies arbóreas por hectárea (23), índice de diversidad Shannon (2.0) y almacén de carbono (75 Mg ha-1) que los de 10 años (p < 0.01; 10 Mg ha-1, 1.1 Mg ha-1 y 36 Mg ha-1; respectivamente). La ecuación alométrica específica estimó 27.7% (p = 0.05) más biomasa aérea que la ecuación general, por lo que se considera de mayor precisión para estos sistemas agroforestales en particular, y se recomienda su uso para estos tipos de vegetación. Se concluye que, particularmente para México, conservar sistemas agroforestales de cacao de edad madura contribuye a la conservación de la biodiversidad arbórea y almacenes de carbono de la vegetación tropical, asemejando relictos de la vegetación original.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo é descrever e caracterizar um surto nosocomial provocado por S. Typhimurium multirresistente em bezerros hospitalizados em um hospital escola de medicina veteriária localizado no Brasil. Sessenta e três (96,9%) bezerros apresentaram letargia, hipertermia e diarreia profusa e, apesar do tratamento, vinte e seis animais (41,2%) morreram. Cinco animais foram necropsiados e amostras fecais de seis bezerros foram coletadas. As estirpes isoladas foram submetidas a testes de susceptibilidade a antimicrobianos pelo método de disco-difusão e foram genotipadas pelo ERIC-PCR. Lesões macroscópicas sugestivas de salmonelose, como enterite fibrinonecrótica e hepatoesplenomegalia, foram observadas. Salmonelose foi confirmada pelo isolamento de S. Typhimurium em amostras fecais e órgãos de sete animais. Dos sete isolados, seis apresentaram 100% de similaridade ao ERIC-PCR, sugerindo ocorrẽncia de transmissão nosocomial de S. Typhimurium entre os bezerros hospitalizados. Com excessão de uma estirpe, todas foram resistentes a marbofloxacina, enrofloxacina, florfenicol, oxitetraciclina e trimetoprima/sulfametoxazol, agentes antimicrobianos amplamente utilizados para o tratamento humano e animal. Esse é o primeiro estudo que demonstra um surto nosocomial de estirpes de S. Typhimurium resistentes a múltiplas drogas em um hospital veterinário no Brasil, enfatizando a necessidade de medidas preventivas que reduzam os riscos aos animais hospitalizados e a pessoas que entrarem em contato com esses animais.

ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to describe and characterize a nosocomial outbreak caused by a multidrug resistant Salmonella Typhimurium in hospitalized calves at a veterinary medical teaching hospital from Brazil. Sixty-three (96.9%) calves showed lethargy, hyperthermia and profuse diarrhea and despite treatment, 26 (41.2%) animals died. Five animals were necropsied and stool samples of six calves were collected. The isolated strains were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility test by disc-difusion method and were fingerprinted by ERIC-PCR. Macroscopic lesions suggestive of salmonellosis, such as fibrinonecrotic enteritis and hepatosplenomegaly were observed. Salmonellosis was confirmed by isolation of S. Typhimurium from stool samples and organs from seven affected animals. Six out of seven isolates of S. Typhimurium, exhibited 100% of similarity at ERIC-PCR, suggesting occurrence of nosocomial transmission of S. Typhimurium among the hospitalized calves. All but one S. Typhimurium isolated were resistant to marbofloxacin, enrofloxacin, florfenicol, oxytetracycline and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, antimicrobial agents largely used for humans and animal treatment. This is the first study of a nosocomial outbreak of multidrug resistant S. Typhimurium in a veterinary hospital in Brazil and highlighted the need for preventive measures to reduce the risks for inpatients and humans in contact with animals.

RESUMO: Um potro de 10 dias de idade foi admitido com histórico de decúbito e fraqueza generalizada aguda, com progressão para episódios de convulsão e morte. A avaliação post mortem demonstrou onfalite necropurulenta e meningoencefalomielite fibrinopurulenta. Salmonella Typhimurium foi isolada do material purulento coletado do sistema nervoso central. A ausência de diarreia e lesões entéricas associadas à presença de onfalite sugerem que o umbigo foi possivelmente a porta de entrada do agente. O isolado de S. Typhimurium apresentou resistência a cefalotina e ampicilina e resistência intermediária a enrofloxacina, drogas utilizadas para o tratamento de salmonelose. Este é o primeiro relato de S. Typhimurium levando a alterações encefálicas e medulares em potro. A salmonelose deve ser considerada, portanto, como diagnóstico diferencial em potros neonatos com alterações neurológicas, mesmo na ausência de enterocolite.

ABSTRACT: A 10-day old foal presented with a history of acute recumbency and generalized weakness, that progressed to seizure episodes and death. Post mortem examination revealed necrotizing and purulent omphalophlebitis and fibrinopurulent meningoencephalomyelitis. Salmonella Typhimurium was isolated from the central nervous system and determined to be the cause of the meningoencephalomyelitis. Due to the lack of evidence of gastrointestinal disease, the umbilical cord was considered the most likely portal of entry of the bacteria. The isolated S. Typhimurium was resistant to ampicillin and cephalotin, and partially resistant to enrofloxacin. These drugs are commonly used in the treatment of salmonellosis. This is the first report of S. Typhimurium affecting the brain and spinal cord of a foal. Salmonellosis should be considered a differential diagnosis in foals with neurologic signs, even in the absence of enterocolitis.

Resumo O exame venográfico permite diagnosticar e tratar afecções da região podal. Pode ser base de estudos sobre a administração de medicação na região do casco. O objetivo do estudo foi descrever o padrão venográfico na região distal dos membros torácicos e pélvicos de ovinos e caprinos saudáveis, bem como comparar a vascularização entre eles. Foram utilizados 10 ovinos e caprinos clinicamente saudáveis, cinco machos e cinco fêmeas de raças diferentes, com idade entre 2 a 4 anos e pesando 45 a 63 kg. Os membros torácicos e pélvicos foram submetidos à venografia contrastada da região distal. Os venogramas foram coletados por um aparelho radiográfico digital e analisados no software EcoView®. As veias da região do metacarpo e metatarso; as falanges proximal, medial e distal dos membros torácicos e pélvicos dos ovinos e caprinos foram identificadas 25-30 segundos após a injeção do contraste. O erro de técnica observado durante a venografia foi o extravasamento perivascular do contraste. Os venogramas revelaram a vascularização na região distal dos membros torácicos e pélvicos e a comunicação dos vasos entre eles. A projeção lateral foi a melhor projeção radiográfica para avaliar os vasos no venograma. O padrão venoso normal da região distal dos membros torácicos e pélvicos de ovinos e caprinos pode ser observado pela venografia.

Abstract The venographic examination allows diagnosing and treating foot diseases. It can be the basis of studies about the administration of medication in the hoof region. The aim of the study was to describe the venographic pattern in the distal region of the forelimb and hindlimbs of healthy sheep and goats, as well as to compare vascularization between them. Ten clinically healthy sheep and goats, five male and five female of different breeds, aged 2 to 4 years and weighing 45 to 63 kg were used. The forelimbs and hindlimbs were subjected to contrast venography of the distal region. The venograms were taken in a digital X -ray machine and analyzed in the EcoView® software. The veins of the metacarpus and metatarsus; and the proximal, middle and distal phalanges of the forelimbs and hindlimbs of sheep and goats were identified 25-30 seconds after contrast injection. The technique error observed during the venography was the contrast perivascular extravasation. The venograms showed the vascularization in the distal region of forelimbs and hindlimbs and the communication of vessels between them. The better radiographic view to evaluate the vessels was the lateral projection. The normal venous pattern of the distal region of forelimbs and hindlimbs of sheep and goats could be observed by venography.

OBJECTIVES: Unfavorable predicted adult height and psychosocial inadequacy represent parameters used to guide therapeutic intervention in girls with central precocious puberty. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog is the first-line treatment. The aim of this study was to compare two methods used to predict adult height and assess a validated tool for predicting the age at menarche in girls with central precocious puberty. METHODS: The predicted adult height of 48 girls with central precocious puberty was calculated at diagnosis using the Bayley-Pinneau method based on average and advanced bone age tables and compared with the predicted adult height calculated using a mathematical model. In addition, the age at spontaneous menarche was predicted using the new formulae. After Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog treatment, the predicted adult height was calculated using only the Bayley-Pinneau tables. RESULTS: The achieved adult height was within the target height range in all treated girls with central precocious puberty. At diagnosis, the predicted adult height using the Bayley-Pinneau tables was lower than that using the mathematical model. After the Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog treatment, the predicted adult height using the Bayley-Pinneau method with the average bone age tables was the closest to the achieved adult height. Using the formulae, the predicted age at spontaneous menarche was 10.1±0.5 yr. The Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog treatment significantly postponed this event until 11.9±0.7 yr in these “idiopathic” central precocious puberty girls, highlighting the beneficial effect of this treatment. CONCLUSION: Both initial adult height prediction methods are limited and must be used with caution. The prediction of the age at spontaneous menarche represents an innovative tool that can help in clinical decisions regarding pubertal suppression.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi descrever e caracterizar, pela primeira vez, dois surtos de salmonelose causados por Salmonella Ndolo em potros e bezerros do Brasil e comparar esses isolados com Salmonella Ndolo previamente identificada em répteis assintomáticos. Os animais infectados apresentaram febre, letargia e diarreia profusa. Os isolados foram submetidos a testes de susceptibilidade a antimicrobianos e foram caracterizados conforme a presença de genes de virulência e diversidade genética, utilizando-se o ERIC-PCR. Salmonella Ndolo foi identificado em amostras fecais de dois potros e quatro bezerros. Um isolado de bezerro foi resistente a amoxicilina/ácido clavulanico, trimethoprima/sulfametoxazol e florfenicol. Estirpes de dois outros bezerros foram resistentes a oxitetraciclina. Todos os genes de virulência testados foram identificados nos isolados e dois grandes grupos de estirpes geneticamente relacionadas foram identificados pelo ERIC-PCR, um para cada surto. Esse é o primeiro relato de Salmonella Ndolo em animais domésticos e sintomáticos. Previamente, esse sorovar foi identificado apenas em infecções humanas. A presença de fatores de virulência relevantes em todos os isolados e a detecção de estirpes multirresistentes a antimicrobianos destaca a importância do monitoramento de sorovares associados a salmonelose em animais domésticos.

ABSTRACT: The present study aimed to describe and characterize, for the first time, two outbreaks of salmonellosis caused by Salmonella Ndolo in foals and calves in Brazil and compare the isolated strains with S. Ndolo previously identified in asymptomatic reptiles. The affected calves and foals presented fever, lethargy, and profuse diarrhea. Isolated strains were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing, characterized according to virulence genes, and fingerprinted by ERIC-PCR. Salmonella Ndolo was identified in fecal samples from two foals and four calves. One isolate from a calf was resistant to amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and florfenicol. Strains from two other calves were resistant to oxytetracycline. All virulence genes tested were present in the isolates, and two major clusters of closely related strains were identified by ERIC-PCR, each per outbreak. This is the first report of Salmonella Ndolo infection in domestic and symptomatic animals. Previously, this serovar had been identified only in human infections. The presence of relevant virulence genes in all Salmonella Ndolo isolates and the detection of antimicrobial multi-resistant strains highlighted the importance of monitoring serovars associated with salmonellosis in domestic animals.
