Abstract The effective inhibition of MS corrosion in H2SO4 by CP and CP + KI was assessed by EIS. SM of MS was studied using SEM and AFM. The rise in Rct and decrease in Cdl, with higher C of CP only and CP + KI, confirmed MS CI. IE (%) increased with higher C of CP only and CP + KI (from 10-3 to 10-1 M). CP’s maximum IE (%) was 93.9%, at 10-1 M. CP + KI, due to I- ions synergistic effect, showed an IE (%) of about 98.8% at 10-1 M. CP only and CP + KI adsorption mechanism followed Langmuir’s isotherm. SM studies suggested that a barrier film of CP only and CP + KI, mitigated MS surface corrosion. CP + KI is an efficient inhibitor in H2SO4.

ABSTRACT Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a highly malignant and aggressive small round-cell tumor originating from primitive neuroepithelium and mesenchymal stem cells. It is usually seen in children and adolescents with a male predilection and a preponderance to occur in long bones. Although skeletal/soft tissue ES is encountered in clinical practice, primary ES of the genital tract, particularly bilateral primary ovarian ES, is highly uncommon, with only a handful of cases reported worldwide. Ovarian ES is occasionally reported to involve para-aortic and pelvic lymph nodes in advanced stages. Still, cervical lymph node metastasis from ovarian ES is an infrequent clinical occurrence and, when present, indicates a worse prognosis. Here, we present an intriguing case of bilateral peripheral primary ovarian ES in an adult female, recurring as metastasis in the left submandibular lymph node. This case underlines the importance of keeping metastasis from ES as a possible differential while diagnosing metastatic small round cell tumors in peripheral lymph nodes. It also highlights the usefulness of a minimally invasive diagnostic modality of fine needle aspiration cytology and cell block preparation with applied ancillary techniques of immunohistochemistry and confirmatory molecular testing by fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH), for an accurate and quick diagnosis of such entities. The cytological diagnosis of our patient helped in the prompt and early initiation of chemotherapy without requiring any invasive procedure. Abstract Two novel synthesized compounds (FD and ACP) have been applied as inhibitors for MS corrosion in HCl and H2SO4 solutions. Gravimetric, PDP, EIS, SEM and theoretical approaches were employed for the investigation of FD and ACP synthesized compounds IE%. Their corrosion IE% and calculated quantum chemical properties were comparable to each other, and indicated that ACP is a slightly less effective inhibitor than FD in HCl and H2SO4 solutions. Langmuir’s, Temkin’s, Frumkin’s and Freundlich’s adsorption isotherms were used for describing the inhibitors adsorption behavior. The adsorption was spontaneous and followed a mixed mechanism, but with initial physisorption. Polarization data revealed that the inhibitors were more cathodic, because they tended to enforce MS HER retardation. The inhibitors decreased the electrolyte impedance, while Rct increased. The adsorption mechanism was influenced by the protonation and solvation environment, and it was concentrated within the heteroatoms and the aromatic systems. Calculated quantum parameters agreed effectively with the obtained experimental results, while FF indices were useful for predicting the nucleophilic and electrophilic attacks positions.

El duro ambiente del desierto de Thar alberga una diversidad de formas de vida limitado debido a sus condiciones extremas, como el bajo contenido de humedad de los suelos arenosos y la alta temperatura del suelo. En el presente estudio, las bacterias osmotolerantes de los suelos de Thar, fueron aislados y caracterizados. Las bacterias fueron aisladas a partir de 20 muestras de suelo (100g), obtenidas de dunas de arena, suspendidas en agua y alcohol absoluto. Un total de 11 pruebas bioquímicas y morfológicas se llevaron a cabo para identificar géneros de bacterias: la capacidad de tolerancia osmótica de los aislados se examinó con glicerol, NaCl y alcohol, y la secuenciación de los genes 16S rRNA se realizó también para la identificación bacteriana. El análisis de espaciadores internos transcritos de 16S a 23S rRNA (RISA) se realizó para los aislamientos de análisis filogenéticos. El suelo suspendido en el agua contuvo 2.5×10(6) bacteria/g de suelo mientras que el suelo con alcohol suspendido presentó 4.4×104 bacteria/g. Los 24 aislados bacterianos se encontraron tolerantes a 26% glicerol, 14% NaCl y 10% de alcohol y 22 de los 24 aislados fueron grampositivas. Los resultados mostraron que 45.83% y 41.67% de las bacterias son Bacillus spp. y Corynebacterium spp., respectivamente, mientras que Acinetobacter spp., Aeromonas spp. y Staphylococcus spp. se presentaron en la misma proporción (4.16% cada uno). Seis aislamientos fueron seleccionados para secuenciación de genes 16S rRNA y 95% fueron similares a Bacillus licheniformis mientras que un aislamiento fue identificado como B. subtilis. Todos los aislamientos mostraron un buen crecimiento a 50º C con reducción gradual en el incremento subsiguiente de la temperatura. Fuera de 24 aislados, 6 podrían sobrevivir a 65ºC mientras que un aislado podría crecer a 63ºC. Estudios de crecimiento cinéticos revelaron que la reducción en el tiempo de generación en soluto (s) y estrés de temperatura fue mayor en comparación con el tiempo de generación en un medio simple. Este estudio sugiere que las dunas de arena virgen pueden ser una fuente rica de bacterias, tolerantes a los solutos osmotróficos y se pueden examinar para la promoción de crecimiento de plantas en la agricultura. Por otra parte, el estudio podría ayudar a resolver la táctica adoptada por los microorganismos para rechazar la desecación inducida por diversos tipos de solutos.

The Thar Desert harsher environment harbors a limited diversity of life forms due to extreme conditions like low moisture of sandy soils and high soil temperature. In the present study, osmotolerant bacteria from the Thar soils were isolated and characterized. Bacteria were isolated from 20 soil samples (100g), collected from sand dunes, suspended in water and absolute alcohol. A total of 11 biochemical and morphological tests were carried out for generic identification of bacteria. Osmotic tolerance capacity of isolates was examined on glycerol, NaCl and alcohol; and sequencing of 16S rRNA gene was also performed for bacterial identification. 16S to 23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer analysis (RISA) was done for phylogenetic analysis of isolates. The soil suspended in water contained 2.5×10(6) bacteria/g of soil while alcohol suspended soil had 4.4×10(4) bacteria/g. The 24 bacterial isolates were found tolerant to 26% glycerol, 14% NaCl and 10% of alcohol, and 22 out of 24 isolates were found Gram positive. The results showed that 45.83% and 41.67% bacteria belong to Bacillus spp. and Corynebacterium spp., respectively, while Acinetobacter spp., Aeromonas spp. and Staphylococcus spp. were in equal proportion (4.16% each). Six isolates were selected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing and five were found 95% similar with Bacillus licheniformis whereas one isolate was identified as B. subtilis. All the isolates showed good growth up to 50°C with gradual reduction on subsequent increment of temperature. Out of 24 isolates, six could survive at 65°C while one isolate could grow at 63°C. Growth kinetic studies revealed that the reduction in generation time in solute(s) and temperature stress was more as compared to generation time in plain medium. This study suggests that virgin sand dunes may be a rich source of bacteria, tolerant to osmotrophic solutes, and can be examined for plant growth promotion activity in agriculture. Moreover, study might help to resolve the tactic adopted by microbes to defeat desiccation induced by various types of solutes.

Solid state fermentation was carried out using various agro- industrial wastes with the best amylase producing strain isolated from soil. Different physicochemical conditions were varied for maximum enzyme production. The strain produced about 5400 units/g of amylase at 1:3 moisture content, 20% inoculum, after 72 h of incubation with Mustard Oil seed cake as the substrate. The optimum temperature and pH of the enzyme activity were found to be 50ºC and 6 respectively. The enzyme was found to be thermostable at 70ºC for about 2 h without any salt. It showed stability at pH range 5-7. The metal ions as Na+, Ca++, Mg++ and Co++ enhanced the enzyme activity.

The recognition of DF (DHF Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever) is very complicated due to occurrence of a wide spectrum of clinical signs and symptoms during acute phase of illness. Moreover, presence of four serotypes further complicates the prognosis. To investigate the predictors of disease severity and elucidate the prognostic markers among four dengue serotypes, this study was conducted on 320 inpatients having acute febrile illness clinically suspected as DI, over a period of five years. Dengue serotypes were confirmed by multiplex reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR. Eighty patients were positive for DI with presence of Den-1, Den-2, Den-3, and Den-4 in 8, 35, 27 and 10 patients, respectively. The severe clinical manifestations, abdominal pain and hepatomegaly, were comparatively higher in Den-2 patients. Liver aminotransferases levels were also higher in Den-2 patients (app. 5 fold). This study clearly indicates the hyperendemicity of all dengue serotypes. Nucleotide sequencing of Envelope region revealed that the presently emerged Den-3 belongs to type III, having high homology with genotype responsible for number of outbreaks in 1980s. The re-emergence of this deadly type can be suspected to cause more outbreaks in future and is a matter of great concern.

Copolymer of monomer 2,4-dichlorophenylacrylate (2,4-DCPA) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) were synthesized with different monomer feed ratio using dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator at 70°C. The copolymers were characterized by IR-Spectroscopy and copolymer composition was determined with UV-Spectroscopy. The linearization method of Fineman Ross (F-R) and Kelen Tudos (K-T) were used to obtain the monomer reactivity ratios. Thermal analyses of polymer were carried out in nitrogen atmosphere thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA) and differential thermal analyses (DTA). The molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity were determined by vapor pressure osmometry (VPO). The homo and copolymers were tested for their antimicrobial properties against selected microorganisms.

The current study determined the spectrum of biliary microflora with special emphasis on enteric fever organisms in patients with acute cholangitis with and without cholelithiasis or other biliary diseases. The patients were divided into three groups: Group A consisted of patients with acute cholecystitis with cholelithiasis; Group B consisted of patients with acute cholecystitis with gastrointestinal ailments requiring biliary drainage and group C consisted of patients with gallbladder carcinoma. Gallbladder, bile and gallstones were subjected to complete microbiological and histopathological examination. Antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates was performed as per CLSI guidelines. Bacteria were recovered from 17 samples (32%) in Group A, 17 (51.4%) in Group B and 1 (1.6%) in Group C. The most common organisms isolated were Escherichia coli (11, 29.7%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (10, 27%), Citrobacter freundii (3, 8.1%), Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi (3, 8.1%), etc. The majority of Enterobacteriaceae isolates were susceptible to piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem. As regards Salmonella spp., S. Typhi was isolated from 2 (3.8%) patients in Group A and 1 (16%) in Group C. Antimicrobial susceptibility of potential causative organisms, the severity of the cholecystitis, and the local susceptibility pattern must be taken into consideration when prescribing drugs. A protocol regarding the management of such cases should be formulated based on observations of similar studies.
