RESUMO. Este estudo investigou a trajetória de mulheres talentosas de acordo com o Mega-Modelo de Desenvolvimento de Talentos, concebido por Subotnik, Olszewski-Kubilius e Worrell (2011), analisando a relação existente entre as dimensões individuais, contextuais e interpessoais no seu percurso profissional. Foram realizadas cinco entrevistas com mulheres eminentes em cinco áreas de atuação: educação, comunicação, recursos humanos, publicidade e literatura brasileira. Os resultados foram analisados conforme a Teoria Fundamentada nos Dados. Verificou-se que independente da área em que atuam e de diferenças encontradas em relação à idade, formação educacional e estrutura familiar, fatores como resistência a estereótipos de gênero, trabalho como fonte de transformação social, presença de mentores, suporte emocional da família, oportunidades, otimismo e resiliência foram decisivos para a expressão e desenvolvimento de seus potenciais. Esses fatores foram classificados como facilitadores e variáveis de proteção frente às adversidades encontradas. Compreender o talento feminino envolve considerar a inter-relação das dimensões psicológicas, sociais e culturais.

ABSTRACT. This study investigated the trajectory of talented women according to the Mega-Model of Talent Development conceived by Subotnik, Olszewski-Kubilius and Worrell (2011), analyzing the relationship between individual, contextual and interpersonal dimensions in their professional career. Five interviews were conducted with eminent women in five areas: education, communication, human resources, advertising, and Brazilian literature. The results were analyzed according to the Grounded Theory. Regardless of the area where they work and the differences found in relation to age, educational background and family structure, factors such as resistance to gender stereotypes, work as a source of social transformation, presence of mentors, emotional family support, opportunities, optimism and resilience were decisive for the expression and development of their potentials. These factors were classified as facilitators and protection variables against the adversities faced in life. Understanding female talent involves considering the interrelationship of psychological, social, and cultural dimensions.

RESUMEN. En este estudio se investigó la trayectoria de mujeres talentosas de acuerdo con el Mega-Modelo de Desarrollo de Talentos concebido por Subotnik, Olszewski-Kubilius y Worrell (2011), analizando la relación existente entre las dimensiones individuales, contextuales e interpersonales en su recorrido profesional. Se realizaron cinco entrevistas con mujeres eminentes en cinco áreas de actuación: educación, comunicación, recursos humanos, publicidad, y literatura brasileña. Los resultados fueron analizados conforme a la Teoría Fundamentada en los Datos. Se verificó que independientemente del área en que actúan y de diferencias encontradas en relación a la edad, formación educativa y estructura familiar, factores como resistencia a estereotipos de género, trabajo como fuente de transformación social, presencia de mentores, apoyo familiar emocional, oportunidades, optimismo y resiliencia fueron decisivos para la expresión y el desarrollo de sus potenciales. Estos factores se clasificaron como facilitadores y variables de protección frente a las adversidades encontradas. Comprender el talento femenino implica considerar la interrelación de las dimensiones psicológicas, sociales y culturales.

Resumo O filme de carbono semelhante a diamante (DLC) é um material de revestimento duro e biocompatível que pode impedir a corrosão com liberação de íons metálicos. Este estudo avaliou as características estruturais do filme de DLC, com e sem nanopartículas de prata (Ag), depositadas por plasma (PECVD) em liga de titânio (Ti-6Al-4V) e formação óssea em contato com filmes de DLC. Foram utilizadas 60 amostras de Ti-6Al-4V divididas em: não recobertas, recobertas com DLC e recobertas com DLC-Ag. Após caracterização estrutural, amostras foram fixadas bilateralmente na mandíbula de coelhos. Após 15 e 90 dias, as amostras foram novamente caracterizadas e a formação óssea na área foi analisada por histomorfometria. A análise estatística foi realizada por ANOVA dois fatores. Ambos os filmes DLC e DLC-Ag foram firmemente aderidos e mostraram uma alta resistência elétrica sem alterações significativas no espectro Raman após a osseointegração in vivo. Após 15 dias, havia trabéculas ósseas imaturas na interface e cobrindo parcialmente a superfície. Após 90 dias, o osso maduro preencheu a interface e a superfície. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os três grupos nos dois períodos. Em conclusão, a osseointegração com DLC, DLC-Ag e Ti-6Al-4V não revestido é similar. No entanto, os revestimentos DLC e DLC-Ag têm a vantagem do isolamento elétrico e podem presumivelmente controlar a atividade bacteriana e a corrosão com liberação de íons.

Abstract Diamond-like carbon (DLC) film is a biocompatible hard coating material that can prevent the leaching of metal ions. This study evaluates the structural characteristics of DLC, with and without silver nanoparticles, deposited by plasma (PECVD) on titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) and bone formation in contact with DLC films. Sixty Ti-6Al-4V samples were used divided in: uncoated, coated with DLC and coated with DLC-Ag. After structural characterization, samples were fixed bilaterally at the rabbit's mandible. After 15 and 90 days, samples were characterized again and bone formation in the area was analyzed by histomorphometry. Statistical analysis was performed by two-way ANOVA. Both the DLC and DLC-Ag films were firmly adhered and showed a high electrical resistance without significant changes in the Raman spectrum after in vivo integration. After 15 days, there were immature bone trabeculae in the interface and partially covering the surface. After 90 days, mature bone filled the interface and coved the surface. There was no statistically significant difference among the three groups in both periods. In conclusion, osseointegration with DLC, DLC-Ag and uncoated Ti-6Al-4V is similar. However, DLC and DLC-Ag coverings have the advantage of electrical insulation and can presumably control bacterial activity and ion leaching.

Resumo Este estudo clínico foi conduzido para correlacionar os níveis de endotoxinas e bactérias cultiváveis encontradas na infecção endodôntica primária (IEP) com o volume do canal radicular determinado pelo uso da Tomografia Computadorizada de Feixe Cônico (TCFC); e avaliar a diversidade bacteriana correlacionada com características clínicas. Vinte pacientes com IEP foram selecionados e as características clínicas foram registradas. O volume (mm3) do canal radicular foi determinado pela análise TCFC. As amostras do canal radicular foram analisadas usando o teste cinético de análise LAL para determinar os níveis de endotoxinas e técnicas anaeróbicas para determinar a contagem bacteriana (UFC/mL). O DNA foi extraído de todas as amostras para determinar a diversidade bacteriana e quantificado utilizando o teste Checkerboard-DNA-DNA-Hybridization. Bactérias cultiváveis e endotoxinas foram detectadas em 100% das amostras do canal radicular. A análise de regressão linear revelou uma correlação entre o volume do canal radicular e a presença de bactérias anaeróbicas (p<0,05). Foram encontradas correlações positivas entre espécies de bactérias e presença de diferentes características clínicas (p<0,05). Após agrupamento das espécies dos micro-organismos em complexos bacterianos, foram encontradas associações positivas entre os complexos verde, laranja e vermelho com presença de fístula (p<0,05). Este estudo clínico revelou que os canais radiculares mais amplos possuem níveis mais elevados de bactérias cultiváveis na IEP. Assim, a interação de diferentes espécies de bactérias virulentas em complexos parece desempenhar um papel importante no desenvolvimento de características clínicas.

Abstract This clinical study was conducted to correlate the levels of endotoxins and culturable bacteria found in primary endodontic infection (PEI) with the volume of root canal determined by using Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT); and to evaluate the bacterial diversity correlating with clinical features. Twenty patients with PEI were selected and clinical features were recorded. The volume (mm3) of root canal was determined by CBCT analysis. Root canal samples were analyzed by using kinetic LAL-assay test to determine the levels of endotoxins and anaerobic technique to determine the bacterial count (CFU/mL). DNA was extracted from all samples to determine bacterial diversity and quantified by using Checkerboard-DNA-DNA- Hybridization. Culturable bacteria and endotoxins were detected in 100% of the root canal samples. Linear regression analysis revealed a correlation between root canal volume and presence of anaerobic bacteria (p<0.05). Positive correlations were found between bacteria species and presence of different clinical features (p<0.05). After grouping the bacteria species into bacterial complexes, positive associations were found between green, orange and red complexes with presence of sinus tract (p<0.05). This clinical study revealed that larger root canals hold higher levels of culturable bacteria in PEI. Thus, the interaction of different virulent bacteria species in complexes seems to play an important role in the development of clinical features.

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é descrever processos e resultados parciais relacionados ao Programa de Desenvolvimento de Habilidades Sociais para Jovens Talentosos. O programa consiste de 13 encontros semanais de 1h40min, centrados em diferentes conjuntos de habilidades como: comunicação, empatia, assertividade, expressão e autocontrole emocional e resolução de conflitos interpessoais. Participaram do programa 128 jovens com idade média de 18,9 anos (DP= 4,93). Destacaram-se como aspectos positivos: as atividades de automonitoramento, a mediação dos tutores e as interações no grupo.

ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to describe the processes and partial results related to the Social Skills Development Program for Talented Youth. The program consists of 13 weekly meetings of 1 hr 40 min centered on different skills sets of civility, communication, empathy, assertiveness, emotional expression and self-control, and resolution of interpersonal conflicts. One hundred and twenty-eight adolescents with a mean age of 18.9 years old (SD=4,93) participated in the program. The positive aspects were the self-monitoring activities, the tutors’ mediation, and the group interactions.

Resumen La creciente participación de las mujeres en posiciones de liderazgo es una realidad en el escenario mundial. Sin embargo, un análisis de las posiciones de varias carreras muestra que este progreso ha sido insuficiente para conducir de manera equitativa el ascenso profesional de las mujeres en los más altos niveles de responsabilidad, poder y prestigio. En Brasil la situación no es diferente. Varios factores contribuyen a este fenómeno. Las influencias sociales y culturales desempeñan un papel particularmente importante en el desarrollo del talento para el liderazgo femenino: afectando no solo los patrones de comportamiento incorporados y mostrados por las mujeres, sino también la estructura de sus campos profesionales. Por lo tanto, este estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar el desarrollo del talento a la luz de los estudios de género, con énfasis en los factores que interfieren en el ascenso de las mujeres brasileñas hacia posiciones de poder y liderazgo. Con este enfoque se espera provocar una reflexión sobre cómo se perpetúan las condiciones de desigualdad que sufren las mujeres y a menudo perpetúan y naturalizan mediante la valoración de su "diferencia".

Abstract Women's participation in leadership positions is increasing all over the world. Nevertheless, an analysis of the top positions of several careers shows that this progress has been insufficient to equitably drive the professional rise of women to the highest levels of responsibility, power and prestige. In Brazil the situation is not different. Various factors contribute to this phenomenon. Social and cultural influences play a particularly important role in the development of female leadership talent, impacting not just the behavioral patterns incorporated and displayed by women, but also the structure of their professional fields. Hence, this study aimed to analyze the development of talent in the light of gender studies, with an emphasis on factors that interfere in the rise of Brazilian women towards positions of power and leadership. This approach is hoped to elicit a reflection on how the unequal conditions experienced by women are perpetuated and often made to seem natural by valuing their "difference".

Resumo A ascendente participação feminina em postos de liderança é uma realidade no cenário mundial. Contudo, ao se analisar o topo de diversas carreiras, verifica-se que o avanço ocorrido ainda não foi suficiente para impulsionar, de forma equânime, o crescimento profissional das mulheres a níveis hierárquicos de maior responsabilidade, poder e prestígio. No Brasil, essa realidade não é diferente. Diversos fatores contribuem para esse fenômeno, destacando-se as influências sociais e culturais no desenvolvimento do talento de liderança feminina, impactando não apenas os padrões de comportamentos incorporados e desempenhados pela mulher, mas também a estrutura do campo em que está inserida. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o desenvolvimento do talento à luz dos estudos de gênero, com ênfase nos fatores que interferem na trajetória da mulher brasileira em direção à postos de poder e liderança. Espera-se que a compreensão desse fenômeno por essa perspectiva possibilite uma reflexão acerca da perpetuação da condição de desigualdade vivenciada pela mulher e que muitas vezes é naturalizada pela valorização da sua "diferença".

This in vitro and in vivo study compared different topographies of Ti samples (dense, porosity of 30% and 40%) with or not CaP coating, prepared by powder metallurgy. Osteogenic cells from newborn rat calvaria were plated onto the samples and cell adhesion (24 hours), alkaline phosphatase activity (7 and 10 days) and mineralization nodules (14 days) were assessed. Sixteen rabbits were used for in vivo study. Each animal received three non-treated and three treated implants in the right or left tibia, respectively. Histometric evaluation of bone-implant contact (BIC) were assessed at 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks. Metallographic analysis revealed porosities of 30% and 40%, with pore size ranging from 250 to 350 µm. Cell adhesion test and ALP revealed similar cell behavior, independently of topography and CaP coating (P > 0.05%). However, CaP coating combined with porosity of 40% influenced positively the mineralized matrix formation (P < 0.05%). CaP-coated implants showed higher BIC than non-CaP implants and BIC was different between the short (1 and 2 weeks) and long (4 and 8 weeks) healing periods (P < 0.05%). The results suggest that CaP coating combined with 40% porosity implants allowed greater osteogenesis in vitro and increased BIC in vivo.

RESUMO Em um cenário atual onde a lesão traumática e suas consequências representam 9% das causas de morte no mundo, o manejo da hemorragia não compressível do tronco pode ser problemático. Com a melhoria da medicina, a abordagem desses pacientes deve ser precisa e imediata, para que as consequências possam ser mínimas. Portanto, visando o método ideal de manejo, estudos levaram ao desenvolvimento da técnica de oclusão ressuscitativa por balão endovascular da aorta (Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta - REBOA). Este procedimento foi utilizado em centros de trauma selecionados como um complemento durante a reanimação para pacientes vítimas de trauma com hemorragia não compressível do tronco. Embora o uso dessa técnica esteja aumentando, sua eficácia ainda não é clara. Este artigo objetiva, por meio de uma revisão detalhada, trazer uma visão atualizada sobre este procedimento, sua técnica, variações, benefícios, limitações e futuro.

ABSTRACT In a current scenario where trauma injury and its consequences account for 9% of the worlds causes of death, the management of non-compressible torso hemorrhage can be problematic. With the improvement of medicine, the approach of these patients must be accurate and immediate so that the consequences may be minimal. Therefore, aiming the ideal method, studies have led to the development of Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA). This procedure has been used at select trauma centers as a resuscitative adjunct for trauma patients with non-compressible torso hemorrhage. Although the use of this technique is increasing, its effectiveness is still not clear. This article aims, through a detailed review, to inform an updated view about this procedure, its technique, variations, benefits, limitations and future.

ABSTRACT HAM/TSP (HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis) is a slowly progressive disease, characterized by a chronic spastic paraparesis. It is not known if the disease carries an independent risk for cardiovascular disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cardiovascular risk profile related to HAM/TSP and compare it with the general population. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, with a control group. HAM/TSP patients were evaluated using cardiovascular risk scores (ASCVD RISK, SCORE and Framingham) and inflammatory markers (ultrasensitive CRP and IL-6), and compared with a control group of healthy individuals. We also evaluated the correlation between cardiovascular risk and the functional status of patients with HAM/TSP evaluated by the FIM scale. Results: Eighty percent of patients in this study were females, mean age of 51 years (11.3). The control group showed an increased cardiovascular event risk in 10 years when ASCVD was analyzed (cardiovascular risk ≥7.5% in 10 years seen in 43% of patients in the control group vs. 23% of patients with HAM/TSP; p = 0.037). There was no difference in ultrasensitive CRP or IL-6 values between the groups, even when groups were stratified into low and high risk. There was no correlation between the functional status of HAM/TSP patients and the cardiovascular risk. Conclusions: In this study, the cardiovascular risk profile of patients with HAM/TSP was better than the risk of the control group.

RESUMO Temos assistido, pouco a pouco, a ampliação do espaço outorgado à voz das crianças em pesquisas das ciências sociais e humanas, embora historicamente elas tenham tido seu direito de falar negado, por serem vistas como incompetentes para julgar e informar adequadamente. O artigo discute como a perspectiva delas vem sendo incorporada na pesquisa brasileira, dando especial ênfase à caracterização das crianças envolvidas. Analisou-se 179 artigos de antropologia, educação, psicologia e sociologia que relatam pesquisas com crianças, publicados entre 2000 e 2012, em periódicos classificados como A1 ou A2, pela Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES). Crianças pequenas, que vivem na zona rural e/ou nas regiões Norte, Nordeste e Centro-Oeste permanecem silenciadas. São ausências com importantes repercussões teóricas e políticas.

ABSTRACT Gradually, we have seen the expansion of space granted to the voice of children in researches on social and human sciences, although historically they have disregarded children’s voice, because they were seen as incompetent to judge or properly inform. The article discusses how their perspective has been incorporated in Brazilian research, with special emphasis on the characterization of the children involved. We have analyzed 179 research report articles of anthropology, education, psychology and sociology with the involvement of children that were published between 2000 and 2012 in journals classified as A1 or A2 by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES). Young children, living in non-urban areas or located in the North, Northeast and Midwest remain silenced. There is this absence with important theoretical and political repercussion.

Objective The aim of this paper was to evaluate the repair of onlay autogenous bone grafts covered or not covered by an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) membrane using immunohistochemistry in rats with induced estrogen deficiency. Material and Methods Eighty female rats were randomly divided into two groups: ovariectomized (OVX) and with a simulation of the surgical procedure (SHAM). Each of these groups was again divided into groups with either placement of an autogenous bone graft alone (BG) or an autogenous bone graft associated with an e-PTFE membrane (BGM). Animals were euthanized on days 0, 7, 21, 45, and 60. The specimens were subjected to immunohistochemistry for bone sialoprotein (BSP), osteonectin (ONC), and osteocalcin (OCC). Results All groups (OVX+BG, OVX+BMG, SHAM+BG, and SHAM+BMG) showed greater bone formation, observed between 7 and 21 days, when BSP and ONC staining were more intense. At the 45-day, the bone graft showed direct bonding to the recipient bed in all specimens. The ONC and OCC showed more expressed in granulation tissue, in the membrane groups, independently of estrogen deficiency. Conclusions The expression of bone forming markers was not negatively influenced by estrogen deficiency. However, the markers could be influenced by the presence of the e-PTFE membrane.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the resorption process during the repair of autogenous bone grafts with or without coverage by an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) membrane in female rats with estrogen deficiency using the immunohistochemical technique. Eighty female rats were randomly divided into two groups (OVX and SHAM). The 40 female rats in the OVX group were subjected to ovariectomy, and the 40 female rats in the SHAM group were subjected to simulated ovariectomy. The two groups were further divided in subgroup E, which was subjected to surgery for placement of autogenous bone graft (ABG), and subgroup ME, in which the ABG was covered with an e-PTFE membrane. The animals were killed at 0, 7, 21, 45 and 60 days. The specimens were analyzed using immunohistochemistry for the bone resorption markers RANK, RANK-L and Osteoprotegerin (OPG). A higher remodeling rate was observed at 7 and 21 days after the autogenous bone grafts, when the markers were more intensely expressed. At the final time point, the specimens presented similar characteristics to those observed at the initial time point. The expression of immunohistochemical markers was not altered by the estrogen deficiency. The presence of the e-PTFE membrane delayed the bone resorption process, influencing the immunohistochemical expression of markers.

Este estudo teve como objetivo oferecer uma interpretação do tratamento dado ao tema trabalho infantojuvenil na produção acadêmica brasileira da Psicologia. Foram analisados 29 artigos publicados entre 1985 e 2012. Contou-se, para tanto, com aportes dos estudos sociais sobre a infância, dos estudos sobre construção de problemas sociais e da produção de John Thompson sobre ideologia. No plano metodológico, buscou-se articular o método da hermenêutica de profundidade, tal como proposto por Thompson, às técnicas da análise de conteúdo. Apreendeu-se o uso de retórica dramática que estigmatiza crianças, adolescentes trabalhadores e famílias pobres. Assim, essa produção pode ser reinterpretada como ideológica na medida em que sustenta relações de dominação entre idades e entre classes sociais.

The aim of the present study was to offer an interpretation of the treatment given to the child and adolescent labor theme in the Brazilian academic production in Psychology. A total of 29 articles published between 1985 and 2012 were analyzed. The social studies about childhood, the studies regarding the construction of social problems and the production of John Thompson regarding ideology were considered. At the methodological level, we sought to link depth hermeneutics, as proposed by John Thompson, to the content analysis techniques. We observed the use of dramatic rhetoric that stigmatizes working children and poor families. This production can be (re)interpreted as ideological, in the sense that it supports relationships of domination between ages and social classes.

Diversos estudos enfatizam as dificuldades enfrentadas pela mulher que se destaca pelo seu potencial superior, ressaltando a influência das forças sociais e culturais no desenvolvimento e na expressão dos seus talentos. Conciliar os múltiplos papéis desempenhados pela mulher constitui um dos principais fatores inibidores da promoção do talento feminino. Sendo assim, este ensaio busca contribuir para maior compreensão do desenvolvimento do talento em mulheres e, com base em recentes investigações, discutir os fatores que facilitam e dificultam uma performance feminina de destaque. As informações apresentadas neste trabalho poderão suscitar o desenvolvimento de outros estudos sobre o talento feminino e auxiliar a elaboração e a implementação de programas e serviços de atendimento a crianças e adolescentes talentosas bem como de políticas públicas dirigidas a mulheres que trabalham.

Several studies emphasize the difficulties faced by the woman who stands out for her superior potential, highlighting the influence of the social and cultural forces on the development and expression of her talent. Reconciling the multiple roles played by women is a major inhibiting factor to the promotion of the female talent. Thus, this essay aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the development of talent in women, and, based on recent investigations, to discuss the factors that facilitate and inhibit an outstanding female performance. Information presented in this article may lead to the development of other studies on female talent and contribute to the development and implementation of programs and services that assist children and adolescents talented as well as public policies aimed at working women.

Diversos estudios enfatizan las dificultades enfrentadas por la mujer que se destaca por su potencial superior, resaltando la influencia de las fuerzas sociales y culturales en el desarrollo y en la expresión de sus talentos. Conciliar los múltiples papeles desempeñados por la mujer constituye uno de los principales factores inhibidores de la promoción del talento femenino. Siendo así, este ensayo busca contribuir para mayor comprensión del desarrollo del talento en mujeres y, con base en recientes investigaciones, discutir los factores que facilitan y dificultan un desempeño femenino de destaque. Las informaciones presentadas en este trabajo podrán suscitar el desarrollo de otros estudios sobre el talento femenino y auxiliar la elaboración y la implementación de programas y servicios de atendimiento a niños y adolescentes talentosos así como de políticas públicas dirigidas a mujeres que trabajan.

INTRODUÇÃO: Comparar sinais e sintomas respiratórios entre pacientes com e sem alterações à radiografia de tórax para se estabelecer o significado dos achados radiográficos no diagnóstico da paracoccidioidomicose pulmonar. MÉTODOS: Os achados epidemiológicos, clínicos e radiológicos de 44 pacientes com paracoccidioidomicose (PCM) foram avaliados. Os pacientes foram divididos em dois grupos de 23 e 21 indivíduos de acordo com a presença (grupo 1) ou ausência (grupo 2) de anormalidades à radiografia de tórax, respectivamente, e seus dados clínicos foram analisados com auxílio de ferramentas estatísticas. RESULTADOS: Como regra geral, os pacientes eram trabalhadores rurais do sexo masculino, tabagistas e em idade adulta jovem - grupo 1 e 2, respectivamente: homens (91,3% e 66,7%); média de idade (44,4 e 27,9 anos); tabagismo (34,7% e 71,4 %); forma aguda/subaguda (38,1% e 21,7%); forma crônica (61,9% e 78,3%). As manifestações respiratórias mais frequentes foram - grupo 1 e 2, respectivamente: tosse (25% e 11,4%) e dispnéia (22,7% e 6,8%). Nenhuma diferença estatística foi observada nos sinais e sintomas respiratórios entre pacientes com ou sem anormalidades radiográficas. Os achados radiológicos mais frequentes foram o padrão nodular (23,8%) ou nodular-fibrótico (19%), bilateral (90,5%) e infiltrado difuso (85,7%). CONCLUSÕES: A ausência de diferença estatística nos sinais e sintomas pulmonares entre estes dois grupos de pacientes com PCM sugere dissociação clínico-radiológica. Uma classificação simplificada dos achados radiológicos pulmonares da PCM é sugerida, com base na correlação destes dados e revisão da literatura atual.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to compare respiratory signs and symptoms between patients with and without chest X-ray abnormalities in order to establish the meaning of radiographic findings in pulmonary PCM diagnosis. METHODS: The epidemiological, clinical and radiological lung findings of 44 patients with paracoccidiodomycosis (PCM) were evaluated. Patients were divided into two groups of 23 and 21 individuals according to the presence (group 1) or absence (group 2) of chest X-ray abnormalities, respectively, and their clinical data was analyzed with the aid of statistical tools. RESULTS: As a general rule, patients were rural workers, young adult males and smokers - group 1 and 2, respectively: males (91.3% and 66.7%); mean age (44.4 and 27.9 year-old); smoking (34.7% and 71.4 %); acute/subacute presentation (38.1% and 21.7%); chronic presentation (61.9% and 78.3%). The most frequent respiratory manifestations were - group 1 and 2, respectively: cough (25% and 11.4%) and dyspnea (22.7% and 6.8%). No statistical difference was observed in pulmonary signs and symptoms between patients with or without radiographic abnormalities. The most frequent radiological finding was nodular (23.8%) or nodular-fibrous (19%), bilateral (90.5%) and diffuse infiltrates (85.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Absence of statistical difference in pulmonary signs and symptoms between these two groups of patients with PCM indicates clinical-radiological dissociation. A simplified classification of radiological lung PCM findings is suggested, based on correlation of these data and current literature review.
