ABSTRACT The reality of evil has always been a great enigma for humanity. Balthasar proposes a Trinitarian and soteriological theology that introduces novel elements into the understanding of evil. ABSTRACT The article reviews all the proposals (or vota) sent by the Latin American and Caribbean bishops to the Antepreparatory Commission of the Second Vatican Council on subjects that should be discussed by the conciliar assembly. The purpose is to uncover the underlying ecclesiology of the pastors partaking in the council. The text is structured in two parts. A statistical study of the 395 vota or episcopal responses. And, subsequently, a study of all subjects relating to the nature and mission of the Church, so as to go deep into the underlying ecclesiology. Such a research –not thus far undertaken considering all the vota– reveals Latin American and Caribbean bishops not specially original in contents, but showed nevertheless some attitudes and accents which foreshadow the new ecclesiastical disposition which will begin to emerge on the continent as a result of the conciliar experience.

RESUMEN El artículo revisa todas las propuestas (o vota) enviadas por los obispos latinoamericanos y de El Caribe a la Comisión Antepreparatoria del Concilio Vaticano II sobre los temas que deberían ser tratados en la asamblea conciliar, para descubrir, a través de ellos, la eclesiología subyacente en los obispos que participaron en el concilio. El texto se divide en dos partes. Un estudio estadístico de los 395 vota o propuestas episcopales. Y, a continuación, un estudio de todos los temas que dicen relación con la Iglesia, su naturaleza y su misión, para descubrir más profundamente la eclesiología subyacente. La investigación –que no había sido hecha antes con la totalidad de los vota– muestra que, si bien en lo temático el episcopado latinoamericano y caribeño no muestra especial novedad con respecto al resto del mundo, sin embargo, se pueden aprecia algunas actitudes y acentuaciones que sí presagian el novedoso talante eclesial que empezará a despuntar en el continente a partir de la experiencia conciliar.

Resumen El artículo expone la estruc- tura de pensamiento de Hans Urs Von Balthasar a partir de la síntesis que este logró en su “Trilogía teológica”: “Estética teológica”, “ Teo-dramática” y “ Teo- lógica”. Debido a que la Trilogía está basada en los tres trascendentales del ser (belleza, bondad y verdad), este estudio, luego de revisar las fuentes e influencias que recibió Von Balthasar a lo largo de su vida, describe su comprensión de la relación entre filosofía y teología y ex- plica cómo toda la revelación trinitaria se puede expresar muy bien a partir de la manifestación (belleza), donación (bondad) y comprensión (verdad) de Dios.

Abstract The article presents the structure of Hans Urs Von Balthasar’s thought from the synthesis he achieved in his “Theological Trilogy”: “Theological Aesthetics,” “Theo-Drama,” and “Theo-Logic”. Because the Trilogy is based on the three transcendentals of Being (beauty, goodness, and truth), this study—after reviewing Balthasar’s influences throughout his life—describes his understanding of the relationship between philosophy and theology and explains how the trinitarian revelation can be aptly expressed through God’s manifestation (beauty), bestowal (goodness), and comprehension (truth).

Implicitly, Von Balthasar's theology offers many keys for a practical or pastoral theology. From the basic experience of being, the distinction between being and a being, and of a human being, we discover our individuality at the same time as we discover our communal being. Balthasar develops a theology of the transcendence of being that shows us the basic capacity of reality to express the glory of God. But this capacity of reality is based, in turn, on creation being the work of Logos, who becomes flesh, and even more deeply in God existing in the other self, in the Divine Word. It is the christological entis analogy which supports the form (or the concrete structure of being) as an expression of the glory of God, which supports the possibility of a theological reading of reality. The article shows very well what the philosophical and theological foundations could be for being able to carry out a theological reading of reality.

La teología de Von Balthasar, de manera implícita, da muchas claves para una teología pastoral o práctica. A partir de la experiencia básica del ser -la distinción entre ser y ente- y del ser humano -descubrimos nuestra individualidad al tiempo que descubrimos nuestro ser comunitario-, Balthasar desarrolla una teología de la analogía de los trascendentales del ser, que muestra la capacidad básica de la realidad de expresar la gloria de Dios. Pero esta capacidad de la realidad se basa, a su vez, en que la creación es obra del Logos, que luego se hace carne; y más hondamente aún en que en Dios existe lo otro de sí, en el Verbo divino. Es la analogia entis cristológica la que fundamenta la forma -o estructura concreta del ser- como expresión de la gloria de Dios, la que fundamenta la posibilidad de una lectura teológica de la realidad. El artículo muestra muy bien cuáles pueden ser los fundamentos filosóficos y teológicos para poder realizar una lectura teológica de la realidad.
