Abstract Urban parks are not only important for the wellbeing of the human population, but are also widely considered to be potentially important sites for the conservation of biodiversity. However, they may offer risk parasitic infections, such as schistosomiasis and fascioliasis, which are both transmitted by freshwater snails. The present study investigated the occurrence of freshwater gastropods in urban parks of the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, and their possible infection by helminths of medical-veterinary importance. Gastropods were collected from six parks (2021 - 2022) and examined for the presence of larval helminths. In all, 12 gastropod species from different families were collected: Ampullariidae, Assimineidae, Burnupidae, Lymnaeidae, Physidae, Planorbidae, Succineidae, and Thiaridae. The parasitological examination revealed cercaria of three types in five snail species, with the Pleurolophocerca cercariae type in Melanoides tuberculata (the most abundant species), Echinostoma cercariae in Physella acuta and Pomacea maculata, and Virgulate cercariae, in Pomacea sp. and Pomacea maculata. None of the Biomphalaria tenagophila and Pseudosuccinea columella (the most frequent species) specimens were parasitized by Schistosoma mansoni or Fasciola hepatica, respectively. Even so, some parks may represent a considerable potential risk for transmission of both Schistosoma mansoni and Fasciola hepatica, given the presence of these gastropod vectors and the frequent contact of visitors with the waterbodies.

Resumo Joseph, ou José, Benoliel (1857–1937) foi um poeta, tradutor e orientalista natural de Tânger que se estabeleceu em Portugal por volta de 1881. Judeu de origem sefardita, distinguiu-se como hebraísta e arabista; escreveu em português, espanhol, francês e hebraico, traduziu de e para português e sociabilizou com a intelectualidade portuguesa de viragem do século, que serviu com as suas competências linguísticas. Neste ensaio, mapeiam-se as práticas de translinguismo (Kellman, 2020), tanto literário como académico-científico, deste migrante poliglota. Essas práticas incluem a criação autoral, diretamente em diferentes línguas, a tradução e também a consultoria, ou assessoria, linguística. Neste exercício de mapeamento, identificar-se-ão as redes de colaboração interpessoais e de diálogo intelectual construídas em e também a partir de Portugal, as quais potenciaram a consolidação do poliglota translingue.

Abstract Joseph, or José, Benoliel (1857–1937) was a poet, translator and orientalist from Tangier who settled in Portugal around 1881. A Jew of Sephardic origin, he distinguished himself as a Hebraist and an Arabist. He wrote in Portuguese, Spanish, French and Hebrew, translated from and into Portuguese, and he socialised with the Portuguese intelligentsia at the turn of the century, assisting them with his linguistic skills. This essay intends to map the translingual practices (Kellman, 2020), both literary and academic-scientific, of this polyglot migrant. These practices include authorial creation directly in different languages, translation, and linguistic consultancy. This mapping exercise will help identify Benoliel’s networks of interpersonal collaboration and intellectual dialogue built in and also from Portugal, which have promoted the consolidation of the translingual polyglot.

Resumo Introdução: A atual pandemia mundial por COVID-19 tem vindo a causar um impacto considerável não apenas na saúde, mas também na economia das sociedades, enfatizando a insegurança alimentar como um importante problema de saúde pública. Objetivo: Caracterizar o cenário de insegurança alimentar em Portugal durante a pandemia por COVID-19 e explorar as características sociodemográficas relacionadas. Metodologia: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, que utiliza dados de um inquérito online, realizado entre novembro de 2020 a fevereiro de 2021, incluindo 882 residentes em Portugal com idade igual ou superior a 18 anos. Recolheram-se dados sociodemográficos e de situação de segurança alimentar, sendo que esta última foi avaliada por meio da escala “United States Household Food Security Survey Module: Six-Item Short Form.” Foram calculados modelos de regressão logística brutos e ajustados (covariáveis: escolaridade, perceção de rendimento familiar e situação perante o trabalho durante a pandemia de COVID-19). Foram estimados Odds Ratio (OR) e respetivos intervalos de confiança a 95% (IC). Resultados: A maioria dos participantes era do sexo feminino (71,3%), com média de idade de 36,8 anos (DP 11,0). A prevalência de insegurança alimentar foi de 6,8%. Indivíduos com menor escolaridade (≤12 anos de estudo; OR 2,966; IC 95% 1,250-7,042), e aqueles que estavam e permaneceram desempregados desde o início da pandemia (OR 2,602; IC 95% 1,004-6,742) apresentaram maior odds de pertencer a um agregado familiar com insegurança alimentar, independentemente da escolaridade, situação perante o trabalho durante a pandemia por COVID-19 e perceção de rendimento familiar. Além disso e, independentemente da escolaridade e da situação perante o trabalho durante a pandemia por COVID-19, foi observado menor odds de pertencer a um agregado familiar com insegurança alimentar, aqueles que relataram perceção de rendimento familiar confortável (OR 0,007; IC 95% 0,001-0,062) comparativamente aqueles que perceberam o seu rendimento familiar como insuficiente. Conclusões: Estes resultados destacam os grupos populacionais que estão em maior risco de insegurança alimentar durante a atual pandemia por COVID-19. Estratégias eficazes de saúde pública devem ser desenvolvidas com o objetivo de endereçar a insegurança alimentar durante esta crise, especialmente entre os grupos de maior risco.

Abstract Introduction: The current worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has been having a considerable impact not only on health but also on the economy of societies, emphasizing food insecurity as a significant public health concern. Aim: The objective of this study was to characterize the scenario of food insecurity in Portugal during the COVID-19 pandemic and explore its related sociodemographic characteristics. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study, using data from an online survey, performed from November 2020 until February 2021, including 882 residents aged 18 years or older in Portugal. Data on sociodemographics and food security status were collected, the latter was evaluated using the United States Household Food Security Survey Module: Six-Item Short Form. Crude and adjusted logistic regression models were performed (covariates: education, household income perception, and the working status during the COVID-19 pandemic). The odds ratio (OR) and respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. Results: Most participants were women (71.3%), with a mean age of 36.8 years (SD 11.0). Food insecurity prevalence was 6.8%. Less-educated individuals (≤12 years of schooling; OR 2.966; 95% CI 1.250-7.042), and those who were and remained unemployed since the beginning of the pandemic (OR 2.602; 95% CI 1.004-6.742) had higher odds of belonging to a food-insecure household, regardless of education, working status during the COVID-19 pandemic, and household income perception. Moreover, lower odds of belonging to a food-insecure household were observed among those reporting a comfortable household income (OR 0.007; 95% CI 0.001-0.062) than those who perceived their household income as insufficient, independently of education and the working status during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: These findings highlight the population groups that are at a greater risk of food insecurity during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Effective public health strategies should be developed aiming to address food insecurity during this crisis, especially among the higher risk groups.

RESUMO Introdução: O oclacitinib é um inibidor seletivo da enzima cinase de Janus, que tem como alvo a interleucina-31, sendo utilizado no tratamento da dermatite atópica canina. Apesar de os tutores apresentarem um elevado grau de satisfação com este fármaco, o seu custo representa um foco de preocupação para 75%, sendo que 42,5% dos tutores referiram ter de limitar outras despesas para poderem pagar o tratamento do seu cão. Objetivos: Avaliar a possibilidade de adotar um protocolo alternativo com oclacitinib em dias alternados. Secundariamente, avaliar se existe vantagem em adicionar glucocorticoides orais no início deste protocolo. Métodos: Estudo prospetivo, aleatório, duplamente cego e controlado com placebo, incluindo 16 cães com diagnóstico de dermatite atópica, alocados nos grupos P (n=7; Placebo) e G (n=9; Glucocorticoides). Os animais foram avaliados quanto à gravidade lesional (CADESI-04) e grau de prurido (PVAS) no Dia -30, Dia 0 e end‑point (recidiva ou Dia 30). O estudo comportou duas fases distintas e sucessivas. Na primeira fase foi administrado oclacitinib (0,4-0,6 mg/kg, 14 dias, duas vezes por dia [BID], depois 16 dias, uma vez por dia [SID]) por via oral a ambos os grupos. No entanto, nos primeiros 7 dias, ao grupo G foi administrada prednisolona (1mg/kg SID) por via oral e ao grupo P um placebo no mesmo regime. Na segunda fase, todos os animais realizaram o mesmo tratamento, mantendo o oclacitinib, mas apenas em dias alternados, até à recidiva do seu quadro clínico. Resultados: Foi possível adotar o protocolo em dias alternados durante pelo menos 30 dias em 71,43% dos animais. As diferenças encontradas não foram estatisticamente significativas entre as médias de CADESI-04 e grau de prurido dos dois grupos no Dia 0 e no end-point. Também não foram encontradas diferenças entre os períodos de tempo médios sob o tratamento em dias alternados. Conclusões: Existe potencial neste protocolo em dias alternados que permite reduzir os custos mensais para metade, possibilitando um maior acesso a esta ferramenta terapêutica inovadora, segura e muito eficaz, mas também dispendiosa. Não parece existir benefício, em termos de redução da dose de oclacitinib, na introdução de prednisolona no início do tratamento.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Oclacitinib is a Janus kinase inhibitor with activity against IL-31 used for canine atopic dermatitis. Despite a high level of owner satisfaction with this treatment, the drug’s cost represents a concern for 75%, with 42.5% mentioning that they had to limit other expenses to afford the treatment of their dog. Objectives: To evaluate the possibility of adopting an alternative therapeutic protocol with oclacitinib on alternate days, and whether there is an advantage in administering oral glucocorticoids at the beginning. Methods: This prospective study was conducted as a randomised, placebo-controlled, double‑blinded clinical trial, and included 16 private-owned dogs diagnosed with atopic dermatitis, allocated in group P (n=7; Placebo) and G (n=9; Glucocorticoids). Dogs were evaluated for skin lesions (CADESI-04) and pruritus (PVAS) at Day -30, Day 0 and end-point (whether relapse or Day 30). This study comprised two distinct and successive phases. In the first phase, oclacitinib was given orally to both groups (0,4 mg/kg, twice a day [BID] for 14 days and once a day [SID] for 16 days). However, in the first 7 days, group G was given oral prednisolone (1 mg/kg SID) and group P was given a placebo following the same regimen. In the second phase, all animals underwent the same protocol with oclacitinib, only given every other day, until the disease’s relapse. Results: It was possible to adopt the alternate days’ protocol for at least 30 days in 71.43% of the animals. There were no significant differences between the mean values of CADESI-04 and pruritus at Day 0 and end-point. There were also no significant differences between the average alternate days’ treatment times of the two groups. Conclusions: The alternate days’ treatment protocol has the potential in allowing monthly costs to be reduced by half, giving greater access to this innovative, safe, and very effective, but also expensive, therapeutic tool. There seems to be no benefit, in matters of reducing the oclacitinib dose, in adding prednisolone at the beginning of the treatment.

RESUMO Fundamentos e objetivo: O Lokivetmab é o primeiro anticorpo monoclonal anti-interleucina-31 canina aprovado na União Europeia para o tratamento da dermatite atópica canina (DAC). Este estudo teve o objetivo de avaliar a eficácia e segurança do lokivetmab no tratamento de casos de DAC de um serviço de referência universitário, bem como a opinião geral dos tutores dos animais em relação ao tratamento. Métodos: Foram recrutados dezoito cães atópicos para realizarem duas injeções subcutâneas de lokivetmab, de acordo com o protocolo. De modo a determinar a eficácia e segurança do tratamento, foram avaliados ao longo de 56 dias as lesões cutâneas, o grau de prurido, o hemograma, os parâmetros hepáticos e os efeitos adversos. A satisfação geral dos tutores relativamente ao tratamento foi aferida no final do estudo, e foram contabilizados os animais que mantiveram o tratamento três meses após o término do estudo. Resultados: Observou-se uma redução significativa do grau de prurido ao longo das oito semanas, sendo que 76,5% dos cães alcançou uma melhoria clinicamente significativa. Em relação ao quadro lesional, 77,8% dos cães teve uma melhoria clinicamente significativa, com 61,1% dos animais a manifestá-la nas primeiras 4 semanas. Não foram registados efeitos adversos ou alterações nos parâmetros sanguíneos. A opinião dos tutores dos animais foi muito positiva no que se refere à melhoria da qualidade de vida do cão e da família e, três meses após o término do estudo, 77,8% dos cães mantinham o tratamento com lokivetmab. Conclusão: O lokivetmab revelou-se extremamente eficaz e seguro, além de ter a vantagem de não requerer administração em casa por parte do tutor, o que também contribui para o seu elevado grau de satisfação. A grande especificidade desta terapêutica biológica torna-a uma das mais potentes e promissoras na área da DAC.

ABSTRACT Background and objective: Lokivetmab is the first anti-canine interleukin-31 monoclonal antibody approved in the European Union for Canine Atopic Dermatitis (CAD) management. This study aimed to assess the lokivetmab’s efficacy and safety in treating CAD cases from a university reference service, as well as the dog’s owner’s overall opinion regarding therapy. Methods: Eighteen atopic dogs were enrolled to perform two subcutaneous injections of lokivetmab, according to the protocol. In order to determine the efficacy and safety of the treatment, skin lesions, pruritus score, blood count, liver parameters and adverse side effects were evaluated over 56 days. The overall pet owner’s satisfaction about the therapy was assessed at the end of the study, and the number of animals that maintained the treatment three months after the end of the study was considered. Results: There was a significant reduction in pruritus score over the eight weeks, with 76.5% of the dogs showing a significant clinical improvement. Regarding the lesion score, 77.8% of the dogs achieved significant clinical improvement, with 61.1% reaching it in the first 4 weeks. There were no reported adverse side effects or changes in blood tests. Pet owner’s opinion regarding the improvement of both the dog and its family’s quality of life was very positive, and three months after the end of the study, 77.8% of the dogs continued their therapy with lokivetmab. Conclusion: Lokivetmab proved to be extremely effective and safe, in addition to sparing pet owners from at home drug administrations, which also contributes to their high satisfaction degree. The great specificity of this biological therapy makes it one of the most potente and promising in the CAD field.

CONTEXTO: O uso nocivo de álcool é um dos determinantes de risco mais importantes na saúde da população, sendo o consumo esporádico excessivo (CEE) um indicador importante do mesmo. OBJECTIVO: O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a prevalência deste padrão de consumo (i.e., frequência, intensidade e duração) e explorar a sua relação com comportamentos de risco numa amostra de jovens e jovens adultos/as na cidade do Porto. MÉTODOS: Foram administrados um total de 403 questionários num período de 1 mês na cidade do Porto a jovens entre os 18 e os 29 anos (M = 22,76, DP = 3,57). O estudo enquadra-se no âmbito da epidemiologia social, dado procurar problematizar o CEE numa perspectiva biopsicossocial. RESULTADOS: Dos participantes que ingeriram bebidas alcoólicas nos últimos 12 meses, 67,7% reportaram ter feito consumos esporádicos excessivos, a maioria entre 1 a 2 vezes por semana, num período entre 3 a 4 horas. O número de bebidas por CEE foi em média de 5 para mulheres e de mais de 10 para homens. A disparidade na prevalência de consumo e a associação entre intensidade de consumo, género e comportamentos de risco, foram resultados particularmente relevantes para uma tentativa de operacionalizar uma definição compreensiva de CEE. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados foram discutidos problematizando os critérios associados à definição de CEE. No sentido de potenciar respostas mais ajustadas às reais necessidades dos/as jovens que exibem este padrão de consumo, as políticas de saúde pública devem ser capazes de integrar a frequência, duração e intensidade do consumo na avaliação de risco.

CONTEXTO: El uso nocivo de alcohol es uno de los determinantes de riesgo más importantes en la salud de la población, siendo el consumo esporádico excesivo (CEE) un indicador importante del mismo. OBJETIVO: El objetivo principal de este estudio es producir datos que permitan una lectura más profunda de sus dinámicas, en particular con respecto a la frecuencia, intensidad y duración de este patrón de consumo en una muestra de consumidores/as jóvenes y jóvenes adultos/as. METODOLOGÍA: Se administraron un total de 403 cuestionarios en un período de 1 mes en la ciudad de Porto a jóvenes entre los 18 y los 29 años (M = 22,76, DP = 3,57). El estudio cae dentro del alcance de la epidemiología social, ya que busca problematizar la CEE desde una perspectiva biopsicosocial. RESULTADOS: De los participantes que ingirieron bebidas alcohólicas en los últimos 12 meses, 67,7% reportaron haber hecho consumos esporádicos excesivos, la mayoría entre 1 a 2 veces por semana, en un período entre 3 a 4 horas. El número de bebidas por CEE fue en promedio de 5 para mujeres y de más de 10 para hombres. La disparidad en la prevalencia de consumo y la asociación entre la intensidad de consumo, el género y los comportamientos de riesgo, fueron resultados particularmente relevantes para el intento de operacionalizar una definición comprensiva de la CEE. CONCLUSIONES: Los resultados fueron discutidos problematizando los criterios asociados con la definición de CEE. Para fomentar respuestas más apropiadas a las necesidades reales de los jóvenes que exhiben este patrón de consumo, las políticas de salud pública deberían poder integrar la frecuencia, duración e intensidad del consumo en la evaluación de riesgos.

BACKGROUND: The harmful use of alcohol is one of the most important determinants of public health, being heavy episodic drinking (HED) one important indicator of alcohol abuse. AIM: Considering the overall difficulties in the operationalization of HED and the consequent lack of research on the phenomenon in Portugal, the main aim is to analyze the prevalence of this consumption pattern (ie, frequency, intensity and duration) and to explore its relationship with risk behaviors in a sample of young and young adults in the city of Porto. METHODS: A total of 403 questionnaires were administered over a period of 1 month in the city of Porto to young people between 18 and 29 years old (M = 22.76, SD = 3.57). The study falls within the scope of social epidemiology, as it seeks to problematize the EEC from a biopsychosocial perspective. RESULTS: Of the participants who ingested alcohol in the last 12 months, 67.7% reported HED, the majority between 1 to 2 times a week, with drinking time ranging from 3 to 4 hours. The number of drinks per binge drinking episode was of 5 on average for women and more than 10 for men. Results such as the disparity in the prevalence of consumption when using different criteria to define HED and the association between levels of consumption, gender and risk behaviors, appeared as particularly relevant to the discussion of a comprehensive definition of HED. CONCLUSIONS: The results will be discussed problematizing the criteria associated with the definition of CEE. In order to foster more appropriate responses to the real needs of young people exhibiting this pattern of consumption, public health policies should be able to integrate the frequency, duration and intensity of consumption in risk assessment.

Introdução: Nos últimos anos, aumentou a oferta de águas com sabor, vulgarmente apelidadas de águas aromatizadas, disponíveis em Portugal. Também o seu consumo sofreu um aumento significativo. Objetivos: Comparar a composição e valor nutricional de águas com sabores produzidas por cinco marcas diferentes. Metodologia: Consulta online de rótulos de águas com sabores disponíveis em Portugal, com e sem gás. Resultados: A sua composição varia entre a combinação de água, entre 82 e 98%, e de sumo, entre 0 e 12%. Para além do ácido cítrico, presente em todas as marcas, os aditivos alimentares mais usados são os adoçantes (nutritivos e não-nutritivos) e os conservantes. Estas diferenças refletem-se no valor nutricional de cada água. As maiores diferenças estão relacionadas com o valor energético, o qual varia entre quatro e 26 Kcal/100 mL, e com o teor de açúcares, entre 0 e 5,3 g/100 mL. Por outro lado, algumas águas possuem um valor considerável de sal, o qual pode ascender a 0,17 g/100 mL. Conclusões: Como conclusão, as águas com sabor são refrigerantes que contêm muitos aditivos podendo o seu consumo contribuir para um aumento significativo do aporte energético e de açúcar diário. Por este motivo devem ser consumidas ocasionalmente e nunca como substitutos da água.

Introduction: In the last years, there has been an increase in both the flavored waters available in Portugal and in their consumption. Objectives: Compare the composition and the nutritional value of flavored waters produced by five different brands. Methodology: Websites from various hypermarkets and specific companies were consulted to access the information regarding ingredients and nutritional value of the analyzed flavored waters. Results: In general, the percentage of water from different brands varies between 82 and 98%, which is related to the amount of juice used, which goes from 0 to 12%. Besides these two ingredients, flavored waters have many food additives, like citric acid, present in all waters, sweeteners (nutritive or non-nutritive) and preservatives. These different compositions have an impact on their nutritional value. The main differences are related to the energy density, which varies between 4 and 26 Kcal/100 mL, and sugars, which vary between 0 and 5.3 g/100 mL. Moreover, some waters have a considerable amount of salt, up to 0.17 g/100 mL. Conclusions: Despite being perceived as an excellent alternative, flavored waters are, in fact, sodas that have many food additives in their composition. Moreover, their consumption may contribute to a significant increase in the daily intake of calories and sugar. For these reasons, flavored waters should be consumed occasionally and never as a substitute for water.

O cloro é o químico mais usado para desinfeção da água. No entanto, quando a reação não é completa, o restante cloro pode reagir com compostos orgânicos resultando na formação de trihalometanos. Os limites legais para estes compostos variam de país para país, mas a União Europeia estabeleceu 80 µg/L como o limite máximo aceitável. Este artigo de revisão visa uma análise da situação portuguesa em relação aos níveis de trihalometanos presentes da água, explora potenciais riscos para a saúde e possíveis estratégias para reduzir os seus níveis. Vários estudos epidemiológicos reportaram uma associação entre a exposição prolongada a níveis elevados de trihalometanos e o desenvolvimento de cancro. Apesar de haver resultados contraditórios, parece haver associação com o risco de desenvolver cancro da bexiga, reto e pâncreas. Uma das limitações destes estudos está relacionada com a dificuldade em controlar todos os fatores que podem ter impacto nos níveis de trihalometanos no corpo humano. Neste sentido, apesar de a exposição a trihalometanos através da ingestão de água contaminada ser o mais frequentemente estudado, há outras formas de exposição incluindo a dérmica e a respiratória. A primeira é particularmente relevante durante o banho, nomeadamente devido ao aquecimento da água, e a segunda quando se frequentam piscinas. Outros problemas de saúde potencialmente associados à exposição a trihalometanos incluem infertilidade e complicações na gravidez, mas mais estudos são necessários. Como conclusão, muitos fatores são ainda desconhecidos relativamente ao impacto dos trihalometanos na saúde humana. Trabalhos futuros deverão ter em consideração a exposição cumulativa através das várias vias por forma a serem obtidas conclusões relevantes.

Chlorine is the most used chemical to disinfect water. Nevertheless, the reaction is not complete, and the remaining chlorine reacts with organic compounds present in the water leading to the formation of trihalomethanes. The legal limits for these compounds in drinking water vary from country to country, but guidelines from the European Union established 80 µg/L as the maximum accepted concentration. The objective of this review work was to analyze the Portuguese situation regarding trihalomethanes levels in the water, assess possible health risks and strategies to reduce their levels. Several epidemiological studies have reported an association between long-time exposure to higher trihalomethanes levels and cancer risk. Despite conflicting data, the stronger associations were for bladder, rectal and pancreatic cancer. One of the limitations of these studies is related to the difficulty in controlling confounding factors. In this sense, although the usual focus is trihalomethanes ingestion through drinking water, there are other forms of exposure, specifically dermic and inhalation. The first is particularly relevant during shower, due to the heated water, and the second when attending swimming pools. Other reported health problems due to trihalomethanes exposure include infertility and pregnancy complications, but these require additional research. In conclusion, many factors are still unknown regarding the impact of trihalomethanes on human health. Future investigations should take into consideration the cumulative exposure through different routes to obtain comprehensive and relevant conclusions.

Resumo As tecnologias digitais têm sido reconhecidas como mediadoras importantes nos processos de ensino e aprendizagem na Educação Superior. Tendo essa situação por referência, este artigo apresenta uma investigação que estudou o uso das tecnologias digitais, nesse nível de ensino, por estudantes não tradicionais, como suporte à construção de aprendizagens e ao desenvolvimento de competências de autonomia na organização de percursos orientados para o sucesso acadêmico. Foram foco de estudo estudantes dos cursos de História e de Engenharia de Informática e Computação da Universidade do Porto, por se considerar que quem escolhe esses cursos poderá ter competências digitais distintas. Os dados, recolhidos por entrevistas, foram interpretados por análise de conteúdo. Essa análise permitiu identificar dois tipos de tecnologias: as não oficiais, usadas pelos estudantes por iniciativa própria; e as tecnologias oficiais, oferecidas pela instituição ou sugeridas pelos docentes. As tecnologias não oficiais são usadas entre estudantes, sobretudo na criação e gestão de espaços virtuais para a comunicação e cooperação na partilha de materiais de estudo em diversos formatos multimédia. Por outro lado, as tecnologias oficiais focam sobretudo o uso para o acesso a materiais de estudo disponibilizados pelo docente e a comunicação com o mesmo. Relativamente à relação do uso das tecnologias com o sucesso acadêmico dos estudantes não tradicionais, o estudo demonstrou que elas são um suporte à autonomia do estudante na gestão e flexibilidade do tempo e locais dedicados ao estudo, à comunicação entre pares e com o docente, e ao acesso ubíquo a materiais de estudo, à sua pesquisa e partilha.

Abstract Digital technologies have been recognised as important mediators in teaching and learning processes in Higher Education. Taking this as a reference, this article presents a research that studied the use of digital Technologies, at this level of learning and by non-traditional students, as a support to the construction of learning and the development of skills for autonomy in the organisation of itineraries oriented towards academic success. Students from History and Computer Engineering courses at University of Porto were the target group of the study, because these courses may have students with distinct digital competences. The data, collected through interviews, were interpreted by content analysis. This analysis allowed the identification of two types of technologies: the unofficial technologies, used by the students on their own initiative; and the official technologies, offered by the institution or suggested by professors. The unofficial technologies are used among students, mainly in the creation and management of virtual spaces for communication and cooperation, for sharing study materials in various multimedia formats. On the other hand, the use of official technologies focuses mainly on the access to study materials made available by the professor and to communicate with the lecturer. Regarding the relationship between the use of technologies and the academic success of non-traditional students, the study has shown that it supports student autonomy, management of the time and place where they study, the communication between peers and with professors, and the ubiquitous access to study materials which they search and share.

Introduction and objectives: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a non-nephrotoxic contrast media. Due its advantages and to the lack of dedicated CO2 delivery system in some hospitals, homemade CO2 delivery systems have been developed in several institutions. The authors describe a CO2 “homemade” delivery system developed with resources available in the author's hospital and present the preliminary results of its application. Material and Methods: A disposable aluminum cylinder containing 99.9% pure CO2 is connected to a laparoscopic tower. In the connecting tube, between the laparoscopic tower and a 50 mL syringe there is a filter. The syringe is connected to the connecting tube and to the diagnostic catheter with three three-way stopcock fixed together in line. Results: From October 2015 and February 2016, six phlebographies, in four patients with dysfunctional arteriovenous fistulas were performed. The procedures were: angioplasty at the cephalic arch stenosis (one intervention); angioplasty at multiple focal stenosis at the basilic vein (two interventions) and angioplasty at multiple focal stenosis at the basilic vein (three interventions). A case of cerebral gas embolism was recorded. Conclusion: The delivery system we use is useful to maintain the patency of arteriovenous fistula in pre-dialysis patient. However, CO2 injection rate should be reduced, to avoid cerebral gas embolism.

Introdução e objectivos: O dióxido de carbono (CO2) é um meio de contraste que não causa nefrotoxicidade. Pelas suas vantagens e pela inexistência em alguns centros hospitalares de sistemas “dedicados” de libertação de CO2, têm sido desenvolvidos sistemas “homemade”. Os autores descrevem uma técnica de flebografia de subtração digital utilizando um sistema de libertação de CO2 desenvolvido no seu centro hospitalar. Apresentam ainda os resultados preliminares da sua aplicação. Material e métodos: Foi utilizado um cilindro de CO2 medicinal (99,9% de pureza), conectado a um insuflador de laparoscopia. O insuflador de laparoscopia está conectado a um tubo de insuflação, que por sua vez está ligado a um filtro. O filtro está ligado a um sistema venoso e este a três torneiras de três vias alinhadas em série, conectadas a uma seringa de 50 mL e ao cateter de diagnóstico. Resultados: De outubro de 2015 a fevereiro de 2016 foram realizadas seis flebografias em quatro doentes com fístulas arteriovenosas disfuncionantes. Os procedimentos realizados foram: angioplastia de estenose da crossa da cefálica (uma intervenção); angioplastia de estenoses focais ao longo da veia basílica (duas intervenções), angioplastia de múltiplas estenoses ao longo da veia cefálica (três intervenções). Foi registada uma complicação: embolia cerebral gasosa. Conclusões: O sistema de libertação de CO2 que usamos é uma mais valia nos doentes insuficientes renais em pré-diálise. Contudo a velocidade de injeção deverá ser adaptada para evitar embolia cerebral gasosa.

Introduction: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a common disease and if not treated timely can evolve to hip arthrosis and arthroplasty. Objective: The article attempts to review the terminology, epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation, complementary exams, treatment and prognosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip. Development: Routine screening based on clinical findings and risk factors allows early diagnosis and referral to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. Conclusion: The early diagnosis of the developmental dysplasia of the hip is associated with less invasive and more effective treatments and a better prognosis.

Introdução: A displasia de desenvolvimento da anca é uma doença frequente que pode evoluir para artrose da anca com necessidade de artroplastia de substituição, quando não tratada atempadamente. Objetivos: Os autores pretendem realizar uma breve revisão bibliográfica da terminologia, epidemiologia, fatores de risco, manifestações clínicas, exames complementares de diagnóstico, tratamento e prognóstico da displasia de desenvolvimento da anca. Desenvolvimento: O seguimento de protocolos de rastreio baseados na observação clínica e na presença de fatores de risco permite o diagnóstico precoce e a referenciação atempada à consulta de ortopedia infantil. Conclusão: A deteção precoce da displasia de desenvolvimento da anca está associada a tratamentos menos invasivos e mais eficazes e a melhor prognóstico.

Biosurfactants present advantages in relation to the synthetic surfactants, as the biodegradability and low toxicity, and can be applied in the food industry, in pharmaceutical products, cosmetics and in the petroleum recovery. This paper aimed at selecting bacteria for biosurfactant production, evaluating the surface tension and the emulsifying activity and studying the fermentation process kinetics. The pure culture of Corynebacterium aquaticum showed capacity to promote emulsions formation and presented the smallest surface tension (28.8 mN m-1), and, in general, larger kinetic parameters, being selected as biosurfactant producer.
