Abstract Purpose This paper aims to analyze the influence of gender diversity on the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate governance (CG) and economic and financial performance of Brazilian publicly traded companies. Design/methodology/approach The sample comprises 68 non-financial public companies comprising the IBX100 index of BM&FBOVESPA. For that, it was used panel data modeling, correlation and ranking by TOPSIS method. Findings The results suggest a significant relationship between CG and economic–financial performance when mediated by gender diversity. This relationship was not observed between CSR and economic–financial performance. Thus, it can be concluded that in a diversified board of directors, in terms of gender, better monitoring of managers can occur because of the increase in their independence in decisions, as well as performance increase. These results diverge from the literature on the influence of women’s participation in corporate boards in CSR. It is assumed that this result is because of the fact that the participation of women is recent in Brazil. Research limitations/implications The main limitations are the number of companies analyzed, the choice of ISE index to verify the CSR variable and the metric used to verify the CG mechanisms. Originality/value In general, this research contributes to the literature of the area, especially in Brazil, in confirming that the mediating variable gender diversity makes the relationship between CG and performance more significant.

Resumen Debido a la complejidad en la definición del uso de los sistemas de información de manera interactiva y/o diagnóstica, este estudio tiene como objetivo verificar qué sistemas de control de gestión pueden ser utilizados de forma interactiva y diagnóstica en un curso de administración de una institución de educación superior ubicada en Santa Catarina, Brasil. En cuanto al método de investigación, lo realizamos en tres etapas: entrevista individual en profundidad, investigación documental y aplicación de un cuestionario al consejo consultivo del curso: Núcleo Docente Estructurante - NDE. Los resultados indican que los sistemas “generación de ideas” y “gestión de proyectos” deben ser implementados al menos como diagnóstico. Para los sistemas de “gestión del rendimiento de la facultad”, “gestión de la investigación científica” y “rendimiento académico en las disciplinas”, se recomienda la implementación interactiva. Los sistemas “presupuesto” y “sistema académico” no generan rechazo significativo si no están presentes y no agregan valor si están presentes. Por último, los sistemas “desempeño académico en la prueba simulada integrada de conocimiento de la gestión” y “rendimiento de la extensión del curso” añaden valor si se practica, sin embargo, si su implementación no es posible, no genera un rechazo significativo. Las aportaciones de este estudio se refieren a la definición de una metodología de apoyo a las organizaciones en la definición de la configuración de los sistemas de información, ya sean interactivos o diagnósticos, orientados a optimizar los costes de implementación de sistemas de información, pero también a la opinión de un colectivo de personas en la gestión de la institución y contribuyen a la legitimidad de las decisiones

Abstract Due to the complexity in defining the use of information systems in an interactive and/or diagnostic manner, this study aims at verifying which management control systems may be used in an interactive and diagnostic form in an administration course of a higher education institution located in Santa Catarina, Brazil. As for the research method, it was carried out over three stages: individual in-depth interviewing, documentary research and the applying of a questionnaire to the advisory board of the course: Structuring Faculty Core - SFC. The results indicate that the systems “generation of ideas” and “project management” should be implemented at least as a diagnostic systems. For the systems “faculty performance management”, “scientific research management” and “academics’ performance in disciplines”, interactive implementation is recommended. The systems of “budgeting” and “academic system” do not generate significant rejection if not present and they do not add value if present. Finally, the systems “academics’ performance in the Integrated Mock Test on Managerial Knowledge” and “course extension performance” add value if put in practice; however, if implementing them is not possible, it does not generate significant rejection. The contributions of this study concern defining a methodology to support organizations in defining the configuration of information systems, whether interactive or diagnostic, aimed at optimizing the costs of implementing information systems, but also at verifying the opinion of a group of people who participate in the administration of the institution and contribute to the legitimacy of decisions.

Résumé En raison de la complexité de la définition de l’utilisation des systèmes d’information de manière interactive et / ou diagnostique cette étude vise à vérifier quels systèmes de contrôle de gestion peuvent être utilisés sous forme interactive et diagnostique dans un cours d’administration d’un établissement d’enseignement supérieur situé à Sainte Catherine, au Brésil. En ce qui concerne la méthode de recherche, nous l’avons réalisée sur trois étapes: entretien individuelle approfondie, recherche documentaire et application d’un questionnaire au Conseil Consultatif du cours: Structuring Faculty Core SFC. Les résultats indiquent que les systèmes de “la production des idées” et “la gestion de projet” devraient être mis en œuvre au moins comme un diagnostic. Pour les systèmes de “la gestion de la performance du corps professoral”, “la gestion de la recherche scientifique” et “la performance académique dans les disciplines”, la mise en œuvre interactive est recommandée. Les systèmes de “budget” et du “système académique” ne produisent pas de rejet important s’il n’est pas présent et n’ajoutent pas de valeur si présents. Finalement, les performances académiques des systèmes dans le “test de simulation intégré des connaissances de gestion” et “le cours d’extension de performances” ajoutent de la valeur s’il est pratiqué, mais si leur mise en œuvre n’est pas possible, cela ne génère pas de rejet important.

Resumo Objetivo: Este artigo propõe a utilização da Análise de Lacunas de Melhoria (Improvement Gap Analysis – IGA) como método para gestão de compromissos, ou trade-offs, de estratégias operacionais. Desenho/metodologia/abordagem Uma pesquisa quantitativa foi aplicada a 32 clientes de um fabricante de móveis, que receberam seus produtos devidamente instalados em sua residência no período de janeiro a setembro de 2012, mensurando o desempenho atual e o nível de satisfação e insatisfação esperadas pelos clientes em função de alterações do desempenho de estratégias operacionais. Descobertas Este estudo demonstra que através do uso da IGA – Improvement Gap Analysis é possível verificar o impacto da alteração de desempenho das estratégias operacionais por meio da satisfação dos clientes. Limitações da pesquisa Uma limitação dessa pesquisa é proveniente da metodologia IGA – Improvement Gap Analysis quanto ao uso da insatisfação dos clientes como medida de relevância das estratégias operacionais. Outra limitação é que nesse estudo foi analisada a alteração do desempenho das estratégias operacionais denominadas qualidade, flexibilidade, velocidade, confiabilidade e custos. Porém são apresentadas na literatura outras possíveis estratégias operacionais ou critérios competitivos, sendo necessárias futuras pesquisas empíricas para verificar possíveis conflitos de recomendações gerenciais entre os respectivos critérios. Implicações práticas Gerentes devem estar cientes de qual é o foco das melhorias em estratégias operacionais e, em possíveis situações de conflito inerentes ao processo de gestão dos trade-offs de operações, qual estratégia operacional pode ter seu desempenho reduzido, não gerando insatisfação significativa aos clientes. As prioridades de melhorias recomendadas por métodos fundamentados na importância declarada podem ser equivocadas, pois a importância declarada pelos clientes pode alterar-se em função do desempenho. A IGA pode ser uma alternativa viável, pois é possível definir não somente “o que melhorar”, mas também “quanto melhorar” em relação ao desempenho das estratégias operacionais. Originalidade/valor O desempenho das estratégias operacionais tem sido gerenciado sob a óptica da importância fixa e apenas definindo “o que melhorar”. Entretanto, a importância pode se alterar em função do desempenho e pode ser necessário definir “o quanto melhorar”. Esse artigo confirma a alteração da importância da estratégia operacional em função da alteração de seu desempenho, e propõe a utilização do método IGA com uma adequação importante, não definindo apenas a suficiência da melhoria, mas também a configuração de alteração nas estratégias operacionais.

Abstract: Objective The objective of the present paper is to propose the use of the Improvement Gap Analysis (IGA) as a method for the management of commitments, or trade-offs, of operating strategies. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative survey was carried out with 32 clients of a furniture manufacturer. The customers received and had the company’s products properly installed in their homes between January and September 2012. It verifies the current performance and the level of expected satisfaction and dissatisfaction of customers due to changes in the performance of operating strategies. Findings This study demonstrates that, by using Improvement Gap Analysis, it is possible to verify the impact of changes in the performance of operational strategies through customer satisfaction. Limitations of the study A limitation to this research arises from the IGA methodology regarding the use of expected customer dissatisfaction as a measure of relevance of operational strategies. Another limitation is that this study only analyzes the change in the performance of operational strategies of quality, flexibility, speed, reliability and costs. However, the literature presents other possible operational strategies or competitive criteria, requiring future empirical research to investigate possible conflicts of management recommendations between the respective criteria. Practical implications Managers should be aware of the focus of improvement in the performance of operational strategies and, in possible situations of conflicts inherent to the process of managing trade-offs in operations, which operational strategy could have its performance reduced. The priorities of recommended improvements by methods based on stated importance can be misleading, because the importance declared by clients may change as a function of performance. IGA can be a viable alternative. It is possible to define not only “what to improve”, but also “how much to improve” in relation to the current performance of operational strategies. Originality/value The performance of operational strategies has been managed from the perspective of stated importance, only defining “what to improve”. However, the importance may change depending on performance, and it may be necessary to define “how much to improve”. The present research confirms changes in the importance of operational strategy due to the change of its performance, and proposes the use of the IGA method not only to define the level of improvement, but also the change of configuration in operational strategies.

As organizações estão inseridas em um ambiente competitivo no qual a melhoria contínua dos seus produtos auxilia a manter ou incrementar novos negócios. Nesse processo, é relevante ouvir o cliente, pois é ele quem decide se o produto ou serviço será utilizado ou não, sendo então essencial conhecer os atributos do produto que intensificam o nível de satisfação dos clientes. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar o método de análise do contraste da penalidade e da recompensa (Penalty and Reward Contrast analysis - PRC), que identifica atributos relevantes na influência da satisfação do consumidor. Para ilustrar o método PRC, realizou-se uma pesquisa avaliando 16 atributos de supermercados, com uma amostra de 290 respondentes. O resultado da pesquisa revela que a análise do contraste da penalidade e da recompensa apresenta os atributos que influenciam a satisfação geral, mas descarta atributos que os consumidores não têm experiência de utilização, entre eles, os inovadores.

The organizations are inserted in a competitive environment where continuous improvement of their products aids to keep or increase new businesses. In this process, it is relevant to hear the customer because it is him who decides if the product or service will be used or no, being then essential to know the attributes of the product that intensifies the level of customers' satisfaction. This article has as objective to present the PRC - Penalty and Reward Contrast analysis - to identify the relevant attributes that influence consumer's satisfaction. To illustrate the PRC method, the paper evaluated 16 attributes of supermarkets, with a sample of 290 respondents. The result of the research reveals that the PRC identifies the attributes that influence the general satisfaction, but it discards attributes that the consumers don't have experience, among them, the innovations.
