The whitemouth croaker is one of the most important demersal resources of southeast and southern Brazil, and it is caught mostly by bottom gillnets. This fishing system has the advantage of a unimodal distribution of size selectivity, where the optimum length corresponds to the mode of the distribution. This study is aimed to calculate the selection factor of gillnets from fishery studies and monitoring programs, and to estimate a generic curve that represents the retention size probability of the most commonly used mesh sizes for catching whitemouth croaker. Data on capture frequencies using 70, 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130 mm mesh were obtained from the states of São Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul between 1998 and 2012. The selection factor calculated corresponds to 3.73. Based on the general equation of retention size, we estimated a modal length of 261 mm for the 70 mm mesh, 336 mm for the 90 mm mesh, 373 mm for the 100 mm mesh, 411 mm for the 110 mm mesh, 448 mm for the 120 mm mesh and 485 mm for the 130 mm mesh. The modal lengths estimated in this study were consistent with previous estimations obtained by experimental approach. We discuss the appropriate mesh sizes with respect to the biology of the species, along with the possibility of considering gillnet selectivity to improve fishery catch.

La corvina es una de los recursos demersales más importantes del sureste y sur de Brasil, mayormente capturado con redes de enmalle de fondo. Este sistema de pesca tiene la ventaja de permitir una distribución unimodal de la selectividad de tamaños, donde la longitud óptima corresponde aproximadamente a la moda de la distribución. Este estudio tuvo por objetivo calcular el factor de selección de redes de enmalle a partir de estudios pesqueros y programas de monitoreo, y estimar una curva genérica que represente la probabilidad de retención por tallas para los tamaños de malla comúnmente usados para la captura de corvina. Los datos de frecuencias de captura usando mallas de 70, 90, 100, 110, 120 y 130 mm fueron registrados en los estados de São Paulo, Santa Catarina y Rio Grande do Sul entre 1998 y 2012. El factor de selección calculado correspondió a 3,73. En base a la ecuación general de retención a la talla, se estimó una longitud modal de 261 mm para la malla de 70 mm, 336 mm para la malla de 90 mm, 373 mm para la malla de 100 mm, 411 mm para la malla de 110 mm, 448 mm para la malla de 120 mm y 485 mm para la malla de 130 mm. Las estimaciones obtenidas en este trabajo son consistentes con las longitudes modales previamente estimadas mediante una aproximación experimental. Se discute acerca de los tamaños de malla apropiados respecto a la biología de la especie, junto con la posibilidad de considerar la selectividad de las redes de enmalle para mejorar el rendimiento pesquero.

Most bottom trawling around the world occurs in shelf areas covered by unconsolidated sediments, which can negatively affect bottom communities in several ways. We present a new bottom sampler device that can be attached to trawl nets or other bottom fishing gears. This device consists of a steel tube with a piston positioned in the interior to slide the material collected after the trawling and two lateral supports for fixing the device to the footrope of the trawl. Sampling design consisted in comparison two distinct sites, in each of them were conducted three tows with the sediment sampler device and at the begin and final of each tow it were collected sediment samples with Van Veen grab. PERMANOVA test on macrofauna composition indicated no significant difference in relation to both sampler devices. During the experiment, was not detected any problems in relation to positioning and using the new sampler. The addition of extra weight to the ballast cord did not unestablished the net and the device returned to the surface full of sediment in all the trawls, thus enabling the analysis of macrofauna and sediment particle size. Since this device does not interfere with the operation of the vessel or fishing performance, suggest a promising use of this equipment to collect samples in soft bottoms, as well as analysis of macrofauna and determining the size and composition of sediment.

En el mundo la mayoría de las faenas pesqueras que utilizan arrastre de fondo se realiza sobre la plataforma continental, que está usualmente cubierta con sedimentos no consolidados, que pueden afectar negativamente a las comunidades bentónicas de variadas maneras. Se presenta un nuevo dispositivo de toma de muestras de fondo que se puede conectar a redes de arrastre u otros aparejos de pesca. El dispositivo consiste en un tubo de acero con un pistón en su interior para descargar la muestra obtenida de sedimentos y dos soportes laterales para fijar el dispositivo al cable al borlón inferior de la red de arrastre. Para comprobar la eficiencia de este equipo se tomaron muestras en dos ambientes distintos; en cada una de ellos se efectuaron tres arrastres con este dispositivo, a la vez que al inicio y final de cada uno ellos se recogieron muestras de sedimentos con una draga Van Veen. Para comparar la composición de la macrofauna obtenida con ambos equipos se realizó una prueba PERMANOVA, que señaló que no hubo diferencias en la composición faunística obtenida. Dado que este dispositivo no interfiere en la operación de la embarcación o en el rendimiento de pesca, sugiere un uso prometedor de este equipo para la recolección de muestras en fondos blandos, así como en el análisis de la macrofauna y la determinación del tamaño y composición del sedimento.

This study aimed at identifying and characterizing the industrial bottom gillnet fisheries existing in southeastern and southern Brazil, and discussing their implication to the current regional management regime. More than 7,000 landings were monitored in Santa Catarina State harbors (Southern Brazil), between 2001 and 2008. Five distinct fisheries have been identified: foreign vessels captured the monkfish (Lophius gastrophysus) in slope grounds from 2001 to 2002. National fleets have targeted whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), and Argentine croaker (Umbrina canosai) on the continental shelf, and monkfish and the gulf hake (Urophysis mystacea) on the slope. Besides targets and fishing grounds, mesh sizes of the nets were also distinct among the fisheries. Within the four national fisheries only the monkfish have specific legislation, while a general norm orders the others, irrespective of the particularities of the stocks and fleets involved.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue identificar y caracterizar la pesca industrial con redes de enmalle de fondo en la región sureste y sur de Brasil, y discutir sus implicancias en el actual sistema de manejo pesquero. Entre los años 2001 y 2008 más de 7.000 desembarques fueron monitoreados en los puertos del Estado de Santa Catarina (Sur de Brasil). Se identificaron cinco pesquerías distintas: embarcaciones extranjeras direccionadas a la captura del rape (Lophius gastrophysus) en el talud en 2001 y 2002, y embarcaciones nacionales, cuyas especies objetivo fueron corvina (Micropogonias furnieri) y pargo blanco (Umbrina canosai) en la plataforma continental, y rape y brótola (Urophysis mystacea) en el talud. Además de las especies objetivos y áreas de pesca, el tamaño de malla de la red también fue diferente entre las pesquerías. Dentro de las cuatro pesquerías nacionales, solamente la pesca del rape presenta una legislación específica, mientras que para las demás, existe una legislación general de manejo pesquero, que no considera las particularidades de las poblaciones y de las flotas implicadas.

This cost-benefit analysis of three industrial bottom gillnet fisheries that operated in SE/S Brazil during 2009, had a double purpose: to determine the economic and financial performance of the average gillnet vessel in the coastal whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri), the gulf hake (Urophycis mystacea) and monkfish (Lophius gastrophysus) fisheries and to determine the expected effects of applying fishing gear regulation (MPA/MMA N°12/2012) on the performance of the whitemouth croaker fishing fleet. Crucial to this cost-benefit analysis was to collect data through interviews to vessel owners on these fishing fleets cost structures and their fishing costs levels. Three economic and financial performance indicators were used to assess the condition of these fishing fleets: Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Profitability Index (PI). Results showed different costs levels between fishing fleets but, similar relative importance of cost components across fleets: with running costs being the highest, followed by vessel and labor costs in order of importance, except in the gulf hake fishing fleet. Results from the economic and financial performance assessment showed that these three fishing fleets were in a fragile economic and financial condition, all having IRRs lower that 20% and PIs of 1.7 or lower, too low for a high risk activity like fisheries. This problem been more acute in the whitemouth croaker fishing fleet with the lowest IRR (12.11%) and PI (1.2). Potential effects of applying the fishing regulation showed marginal improvements in the fragile condition of the whitemouth croaker fishing fleet.

El análisis de costo-beneficio de las tres pesquerías industriales de enmalle de fondo que operaron en el SE/S Brasil durante 2009 tuvo un doble propósito: determinar el desempeño económico y financiero de una embarcación promedio que opera con enmalle en las pesquerías de corvina (Micropogonias furnieri), brótula (Urophycis mystacea) y rape (Lophius gastrophysus) y establecer los efectos que se pueden esperar al aplicar la regulación al arte de pesca (MPA/MMA N°12/2012) en el desempeño de la flota que pesca la corvina. Crucial para este análisis de costo-beneficio fue la recolección de información mediante entrevistas a dueños de embarcaciones sobre las estructuras y los niveles de costos en la pesca. Tres indicadores de desempeño económico y financiero fueron utilizados para evaluar la condición en que se encuentran estas flotas pesqueras: Valor Presente Neto (VPN), Tasa Interna de Retorno (TIR) e Índice de Rentabilidad (IR). Los resultados mostraron diferentes niveles de costos entre las flotas pesqueras. Sin embargo, presentan similar importancia relativa los componentes de costos entre flotas: los costos corrientes son los mayores, seguidos en orden de importancia por los costos de operación de la embarcación y del trabajo, excepto en la flota pesquera de brótula. Los resultados de la evaluación del desempeño económico y financiero mostraron que estas tres flotas estaban en condición económica y financiera frágil, teniendo TIRs menores de 20% e IRs de 1,7 o menores, lo que es muy bajo para actividades de alto riesgo como es la pesca. Este problema resultó más agudo en la flota pesquera de corvina, que mostraron los menores valores de TIR (12,11%) e IR (1,2). Los efectos potenciales de aplicar la regulación al arte de pesca mostraron mejoras marginales en la frágil condición de la flota pesquera de corvina.

ABSTRACT. Most fishing management systems in the world have long assessed and managed single-stocks over very large areas. The increasing use of the oceans and the problems faced by many fisheries have increased the trend to focus on spatial-based fisheries management. Most of the Brazilian industrial fisheries concentrate in the so-called "southeastern-south region" (SE/S), a large jurisdictional area exceeding 1600 km of latitudinal extent, along which industrial demersal fishing vessels operate quite unrestrictedly, resulting in large overlapping in their catch composition and fishing areas. Despite being essentially multi-specific, management of these fisheries is focused on a few target-species, with poor results in terms of sustainability. This paper aimed at identifying possible future spatial fishing management units for the region, based on the distribution of demersal stocks, depth, bottom characteristics and fishing dynamics from double-rig, pair and stern trawlers, bottom gillneters, bottom longliners and octopus potters which were landed in Santa Catarina harbors (southern Brazil) between 2010 and 2012. Based on these data and information from existing literature, six potential spatial units were proposed at coastal (<30 m depth), shelf (southeastern and southern sectors) (30 to 100 m), shelf break (100 to 250 m) and slope areas (>250 m). This new scheme represents a step forward in designing a final spatial management model for the SE/S industrial fisheries, improving a previous model published in the early 2000' s and conforming, in general, to the three main subdivisions recognized for the South Brazil Large Marine Ecosystem.

RESUMEN. En el mundo la mayoría de los sistemas de manejo de pesquerías han evaluado y manejado stocks únicos en extensas áreas. El aumento del uso de los océanos y los problemas enfrentados por muchas pesquerías han generado un enfoque creciente de atención en el manejo pesquero basado en áreas. La mayor parte de las pesquerías industriales brasileñas se concentra en la llamada "región sureste y sur" (SE/S), una gran área jurisdiccional que excede 1600 km de extensión latitudinal, donde los buques pesqueros involucrados en las pesquerías demersales industriales operan casi sin restricción, resultando en una gran superposición en la composición de capturas y áreas de pesca. Al ser éstas esencialmente multi-específicas, el manejo de estas pesquerías se basa en un grupo pequeño de especies objetivo con resultados pobres en términos de sustentabilidad. El artículo busca identificar posibles unidades de manejo pesquero espacial para la región, sobre la base de la distribución de los stocks demersales, profundidad y tipos de fondo, así como también en la dinámica de las flotas de arrastre dobles, arrastre simple, arrastre por parejas, enmalle de fondo, palangre de fondo y trampas para pulpo, las que desembarcaron sus capturas en los puertos de Santa Catarina (sur de Brasil) entre 2010 y 2012. Basado en estos datos y en información obtenida en la literatura, se propusieron seis unidades espaciales de manejo en la zona costera (<30 m de profundidad), plataforma continental (sectores sur y sureste, 100-250 m) y talud continental (>250 m). Este nuevo esquema representa un avance en el desarrollo de un modelo de manejo espacial para las pesquerías industriales del SE/S, mejorando un modelo anterior publicado a inicios del 2000 y se ajusta en general, a las tres principales subdivisiones reconocidas para el Gran Ecosistema Marino del Sur de Brasil.

The industrial double rig trawl fisheries are an important extractive activity in the southeastern and southern Brazil where near 300 vessels participate, targeting their catch to the sea-bob shrimp, pink shrimp and demersal fishes, such as flatfishes and monkfish. In order to advance in the fishery management, a general characterization of the trawl fleet operating in the area was done, identifying the patterns of nets used and the hydrodynamic performance of the nets observed by means of dynamic simulation. 194 vessels of Santa Catarina State and 130 vessels from other areas, mainly built in steel and wood, were identified. The largest size, tonnage, and capacity, correspond to those vessels working upon demersal and oceanic fishes. On the other hand, the most abundant vessels were those working upon pink shrimp (230 vessels). Regarding the nets, different patterns were identified according to the catch of target species; the smaller nets were used to catch shrimps (sea-bob and pink shrimp) and the largest were used to catch fishes. Mixed nets were also identified, characterized by similar dimensions of nets to catch fish but with mesh sizes of shrimp nets. From the simulations, different performance functions were adjusted according to each founded pattern; these functions will serve to calculate net's spread, their shape relationship, and the hydrodynamic drag forces.

Las pesquerías industriales de arrastre con tangones son una importante actividad extractiva en el sudeste y sur de Brasil donde participan cerca de 300 embarcaciones dirigiendo su captura a camarón siete barbas, camarón rosa, y peces demersales como peces planos y pejesapo. Para avanzar en el manejo pesquero, se realizó una caracterización general de la flota de arrastre que opera en el área, identificando los patrones de las redes usadas y el desempeño hidrodinámico de las redes observado mediante simulación dinámica. Se analizaron 194 embarcaciones del Estado de Santa Catarina y 130 embarcaciones de otras áreas, construidas principalmente de acero y madera. Las embarcaciones de mayor tamaño, tonelaje y capacidad correspondieron a aquellas que trabajan sobre peces demersales y peces oceánicos. La mayor cantidad de embarcaciones opera sobre camarón rosa (230 embarcaciones). Respecto a las redes, se identificaron diferentes patrones de acuerdo a las especies objetivo de captura; las redes más pequeñas fueron usadas para la captura de camarones (camarón siete barbas y camarón rosa) y las de mayor tamaño para la captura de peces. También se identificaron redes mixtas, caracterizadas por dimensiones similares a las redes para capturar peces pero con tamaño de malla de redes camaroneras. A partir de las simulaciones se ajustaron diferentes funciones de desempeño conforme a los patrones particulares de cada tipo de red. Estas funciones servirán para calcular la abertura de las redes, su relación de forma y las fuerzas hidrodinámicas de arrastre.

Commercial fisheries are expanding their activities into deeper water. The life history features of these deep-water resources make them more vulnerable to exploitation than most shallow-water resources. Moreover, the apparent lack of solid information about the ecology of most deep-water species represents a major limitation for the development and implementation of management strategies. This scenario has caused great concern regarding the sustainability of these resources and the possible environmental impacts on the deep-sea ecosystem. In Latin America, commercial fisheries are going deep as well, and considering the above-mentioned concerns, we felt the need to compile the available information about the deep-water shrimp resources and the current status of their fisheries in Latin America. Focusing on Mexico, Central America, Peru, Chile and Brazil, this review describes the exploited species, and, whenever available, the fishing fleet, fishery statistics, and management strategies. A total of 17 species (10 spp. of Penaeoidea; 7 spp. of Caridea) are of commercial interest in Latin America, but deep-water shrimps are currently fished only in Costa Rica, Colombia and Chile. An implemented management plan exists in Chile and Colombia, while Brazil approved fishery regulations for the aristeid fishery, which were never implemented. Considering the lack of information about the biology of the deep-water shrimps, which hinders the development of adequate management strategies, we see the urgent need to improve the communication and collaboration between the different stakeholders in Latin American. We suggest the establishment of a searchable and constantly updated database, which may serve as a valuable source of information for researcher and decision makers. Finally, we propose the development of regional research plans aimed towards supporting measurements for a sustainable use of deep-water shrimps in Latin America.

La pesca comercial está expandiendo sus actividades hacia aguas profundas. Las características del ciclo de vida de estos recursos de aguas profundas los hacen más vulnerables a la explotación que la mayoría de los recursos de aguas someras. Además, la falta de información sobre la ecología de la mayoría de las especies de aguas profundas constituye una limitación importante para el desarrollo e implementación de estrategias de manejo. Este escenario ha causado preocupación sobre la sustentabilidad de estos recursos y de los posibles impactos ambientales en los ecosistemas de aguas profundas. La pesca comercial en América Latina se extiende también hacia aguas profundas y, considerando las preocupaciones anteriormente mencionadas, se requiere la necesidad de compilar la información disponible sobre los recursos de camarones de aguas profundas y la situación actual de estas pesquerías en América Latina. Esta revisión se enfoca en México, Centro América, Perú, Chile y Brasil y describe las especies explotadas, la flota pesquera (siempre cuando sea disponible), las estadísticas pesqueras y las estrategias de manejo. Un total de 17 especies (10 spp. de Penaeoidea y 7 spp. de Caridea) son de interés comercial en América Latina; sin embargo, camarones de aguas profundas solo se pescan actualmente en Costa Rica, Colombia y Chile. Un plan de manejo implementado existe en Chile y Colombia, mientras que en Brasil se aprobaron regulaciones sobre la pesca de camarones de la familia Aristeidae, pero éstas nunca han sido implementadas. Considerando la falta de información sobre la biología de los camarones de aguas profundas, lo que dificulta el desarrollo de estrategias adecuadas de manejo, se requiere urgentemente mejorar la comunicación y colaboración entre los diferentes actores en Latinoamérica. Se sugiere establecer un banco de datos abierto para búsquedas y actualizarlo constantemente, lo que servirá como fuente valiosa de información para investigadores y quienes deben tomar decisiones. Finalmente, se propone desarrollar un plan de investigación para apoyar medidas hacia el uso sustentable de camarones de aguas profundas en América Latina.

Species of the family Pinnotheridae constitute an ideal group for morphometric studies due to their complex morphological adaptations. These adaptations respond to the selective pressure of a symbiotic life style. This study describes the relative growth and morphometric features of the symbiotic pea crab Austinixa aidae (associated with the ghost shrimp Callichirus major), from the sandy beaches in the southwest Atlantic, Brazil. Significant differences were detected in the biometric proportions, particularly the chelar propodus length and carapace width, of each sex. These dimensions were also related to the size at which the individuals reached morphological sexual maturity (5.1 mm of carapace width for both sexes). Males and females were 2.4 times wider than long, which corresponds to the principal adaptation developed by Austinixa species to live in cryptic environments. Moreover, juveniles were proportionally more rounded. The changes in the biometric proportions of carapace length and width of A. aidae were more pronounced in males and females, adaptations that facilitate roaming within the galleries of their hosts.

Las especies de la familia Pinnotheridae constituyen un grupo ideal para la realización de estudios morfométricos, debido a sus complejas adaptaciones morfológicas. Estas adaptaciones son respuesta a la presión de selección debida a su vida simbionte. En este estudio se describió el crecimiento relativo y las características morfométricas del cangrejo simbionte Austinixa aidae (asociado con el camarón fantasma Callichirus major), de una playa de arena del Atlántico suroeste de Brasil. Se determinaron diferencias significativas en las proporciones biométricas de cada sexo, entre la longitud del propodio y ancho del caparazón. Estas dimensiones estuvieron relacionadas también con la talla en que los individuos muestran cambios morfológicos en su madurez sexual (5.1 mm de ancho del caparazón en ambos sexos). Los machos y hembras fueron 2,4 veces más anchos que largos, lo que corresponde a la adaptación principal que las especies del género Austinixa, han desarrollado para vivir en ambientes crípticos. Además, los juveniles fueron proporcionalmente más redondeados. Los cambios en las proporciones biométricas de longitud y ancho del caparazón de A. aidae, fueron más pronunciados en machos y hembras, adaptaciones que facilitan el desplazamiento al interior de las galerías construidas por sus hospederos.

Este estudo analisou o efeito dos fatores ambientais sobre a zonação da macrofauna bentônica da porção subaérea de praias arenosas expostas e caracterizadas por diferentes estágios morfodinâmicos em Santa Catarina. As amostragens foram realizadas entre março/2000 e março/2001, a intervalos mensais nos extremos morfodinâmicos e bimestrais no estágio intermediário. Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que a zonação da macrofauna bentônica apresentou as seguintes diferenças, do extremo refletivo para o dissipativo: a) aumento do número de espécies nos níveis inferiores da praia; b) aumento da extensão das zonas faunísticas caracterizadas por elevado teor de umidade do sedimento; e c) aumento da sobreposição das zonas faunísticas, principalmente, nos níveis inferiores da praia. Os resultados da Análise de Correspondência Canônica mostraram que estas diferenças resultam dos distintos gradientes verticais de umidade, remobilização sedimentar e tamanho médio de grão existentes ao longo do gradiente morfodinâmico, demonstrando a importância de analisar estas variáveis em estudos dedicados a investigar os padrões de zonação de praias arenosas expostas e de micromaré.

This study investigated the effect of environmental factors on the annual average zonation pattern of benthic macrofauna of sub-aerial profile of three exposed sandy beaches of Santa Catarina with different morphodynamic characteristics. Sampling was carried out between March 2000 and March 2001, with monthly frequency on reflective and dissipative morphodynamic extremes and bimonthly frequency on the intermediate state. Results showed that macrobenthic zonation presented marked differences across the morphodynamic spectrum. The main differences observed from reflective to dissipative conditions were: a) increase in the number of species in lower zones of the beach; b) expansion of zones characterized by high water content of sediment and c) increase in the overlapping of zones, mainly on lower levels of the beach. Canonical Correspondence Analysis related these differences to distinctive cross-shore gradients in sediment moisture levels, sediment reworking and mean grain size that exist across the morphodynamic spectrum, showing that it is important to analyze these environmental factors in studies conducted to investigate zonation on microtidal exposed sandy beaches.

Com o objetivo de avaliar as alterações ambientais de curtoprazo causadas pela passagem de um mesmo evento de alta energia em praias com diferentes estágios morfodinâmicos e sua influência na riqueza, abundância e distribuição do macrobentos, duas praias arenosas expostas e pertencentes aos extremos morfodinâmicos foram simultaneamente amostradas antes, durante e após a passagem de duas frentes frias em Santa Catarina. A praia refletiva apresentou maior suscetibilidade ao incremento de onda causado pelos eventos e caracterizou-se por rápidos e intensos processos erosivos, além de apresentar uma rápida capacidade de restauração do perfil praial. Por outro lado, os processos erosivos operaram de forma lenta e progressiva na porção subaérea da praia dissipativa, que caracterizou-se por uma reduzida capacidade de recuperação do perfil . Embora a intensidade das alterações ambientais tenha sido distinta entre os extremos morfodinâmicos, mudanças na composição, riqueza e abundância do macrobentos, induzidos pelas frentes frias, não foram evidentes para nenhuma das praias estudadas. Por outro lado, alterações na distribuição da macrofauna foram verificadas nas duas praias e estiveram relacionadas com as variações do nível do mar, do posicionamento da zona de espraiamento e dos gradientes de umidade daí decorrentes, sugerindo que acomodações de curto prazo na estrutura espacial do macrobentos ocorrem como resposta às alterações nas condições ambientais de acordo com a dinâmica temporal característica de cada estágio morfodinâmico.

The aim of this study was to determine the short-term environmental changes caused by the simultaneous passage of a high energy event on two sandy beaches with different morphodynamic states and their influence on the richness, abundance and distribution of the benthic macrofauna. Two microtidal exposed sandy beaches with contrasting morphodynamics were simultaneously sampled before, during and after the passage of two cold fronts in Santa Catarina. The reflective beach showed a higher susceptibility to the increase in wave energy produced by the passage of cold fronts and was characterized by rapid and intense erosive processes in addition to a capacity for rapid restoration of the beach profile. As regards the dissipative beach, erosive processes operated more slowly and progressively, and it was characterized further by a reduced capacity for the recovery of its sub-aerial profile. Although the intensity of the environmental changes was distinct as between the morphodynamic extremes, changes in the composition, richness and abundance of macrobenthos induced by cold fronts were not evident for either of the beaches studied. On the other hand, alterations in the distribution pattern of the macrofauna were observed on the two beaches and were related to variations in sea level, position of the swash zone and moisture gradient, suggesting that short-term accommodations in the spatial structure of the macrobenthos occur in response to changes in environmental conditions in accordance with the temporal dynamics characteristic of each morphodynamic state.

The royal crab Chaceon ramosae is one of the three species of deep-sea crabs currently exploited in Brazil. The royal crab fishery started in 2001 with foreign vessels that were extensively monitored by observers and tracked by satellite. A management plan implemented in 2005 was based only on biomass dynamics, as biological knowledge of the resource was limited at that date. Samples taken aboard were used to determine size at first sexual maturity for males and females by studying the use of allometric growth of chelae and abdomen in relation to carapace width (CW), the proportion of females with opened vulvae and eggs in the pleopods, and males showing copula marks on the first ambulatory legs. Morphometric maturity was attained, on average, at 12.1 cm (males) and 10.7 cm (females). The CW50% was estimated to be 10.9 cm and 12.2 cm for females, respectively considering the vulva condition and eggs in the pleopods, and 13.6 cm for males. By size class, the maximum estimated proportions of ovigerous females by size class was 0.4 and of males with copula marks was 0.6, suggesting a bi-annual reproductive cycle for individuals of the species. The size composition analysis showed that irnmature individuals may comprise up to 70% of the catches. These results indicate the need to consider enhanced trap selectivity and lower mortality of ovigerous females as new and immediate goals to improve resource management.

El cangrejo real Chaceon ramosae corresponde a una de las tres especies de cangrejos de profundidad que actualmente se explotan en Brasil. La pesca de cangrejo real comenzó en el año 2001 por barcos extranjeros que eran intensamente supervisados por observadores y rastreados por satélites. En el año de 2005 se implemento un plan de manejo, considerando solamente el estudio de la dinámica de la biomasa del recurso, ya que el conocimiento biológico todavía era limitado. A partir de muestras obtenidas a bordo de los barcos de pesca, se estimó la talla de primera madurez de machos y hembras a través de la utilización del crecimiento alométrico de la quela y el abdomen con respecto al ancho del caparazón (CW), proporción de hembras con vulvas abiertas y huevos en los pleópodos, y machos con marcas de cópula en las primeras patas ambulatorias. La madurez morfométrica de los machos fue obtenida en promedio a 12,1 cm CW y en las hembras a 10,7 cm CW. El CW50% fue estimado en 13,6 cm en machos y, en hembras considerando la condición de la vulva o los huevos en los pleópodos, en 10,9 y 12,2 cm respectivamente. La máxima proporción estimada de hembras ovígeras y machos con marcas de cópula por talla fueron de 0,4 y 0,6 respectivamente, lo que sugiere que el ciclo reproductivo a nivel individual es bi-anual. El análisis de la composición de tallas evidenció que individuos inmaduros componen hasta el 70% de las capturas. A partir de estos resultados, se consideró incrementar el efecto selectivo de las trampas y disminuir la captura de hembras ovígeras, como objetivos nuevos e inmediatos para mejorar el manejo de este recurso.

The development of a deep-sea fishery for aristeid shrimps off Brazil is reviewed from its early days in 2002. Descriptive data were collected by observers on board 75 directed fishing trips conducted in the study period, with a total of over 15,000 monitored trawls. An incipient fishing phase took place between No-vember 2000 and October 2002, when aristeid shrimps were occasionally reported in the bycatch of operations mostly targeting the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi). After that, a directed fishery was established for these resources. All nine vessels involved in this fishery (one national and eight chartered) concentrated on 11 limited grounds between 700 and 800 m deep and 18°S and 34°S. The main species caught between November 2002 and May 2007 was the "carabinero" Aristaeopsis edwardsiana (456,710 kg), followed by the "moruno" Aristaeomorpha foliácea (121,497 kg), and then the "alistado" Aristeus antillensis (27,919 kg). The trawlers operate in conjunction, such that the total area of each fishing ground was swept at least twice. This harvest pattern substantially reduced "carabinero" catch rates from 14 kg hour-1 in the first sampled trimester to 4 kg hour-1 in the last. Despite the inferred biomass reduction of this species, the fishery has continued without a formal management plan.

Se revisa el desarrollo de una pesquería en aguas profundas dirigida a gambas aristeideas en Brasil. Desde su inicio, en 2002, los datos descriptivos fueron obtenidos por observadores a bordo de 75 viajes de pesca realizadas en ese período que resultaron en más de 15.000 arrastres monitoreados. Una fase incipiente de la pesquería se estableció entre noviembre de 2000 y octubre de 2002, cuando gambas aristeideas fueron registradas en la captura accidental de operaciones de pesca dirigidas principalmente a la merluza-argentina (Merluccius hubbsi). A ésta sobrevino una fase dirigida en que participaron nueve arrastreros (uno nacional y ocho arrendados). Estos buques concentraron sus operaciones en 11 fondos de pesca angostos entre 700 y 800 m de profundidad y los paralelos 18°S y 34°S. Las principales especies capturadas entre noviembre de 2002 y mayo de 2007 fueron el "carabinero" Aristaeopsis edwardsiana (456,710 kg), seguido del "moruno" Aristaeomorpha foliácea (121,497 kg), y el "alistado" Aristeus antillensis (27,919 kg). Los arrastreros operaran de forma agregada y esto hace que el area total de cada zona de pesca haya sido arrastrada al menos dos veces. Este patrón de explotación ha producido reducciones substanciales en las tasas de captura del "carabinero" que varió de 14 kg hora-1 en el primer trimestre de monitoreo a 4 kg hora-1 en el último. A pesar de la aparente reducción de biomasa de esta especie, la pesquería ha continuado sin un plan formal de manejo.

The recent development of deep-water fisheries off Brazil is reviewed from biological, eco-nomic, and political perspectives. This process has been centered in the southeastem and southern sectors of the Brazilian coast (19°-34°S) and was motivated by the overfishing of the main coastal resources and a government-induced vessel-chartering program. Shelf break (100-250 m) operations by national hook-and-line and trawl vessels intensified in the 1990s. Around 2000-2001, however, foreign-chartered longliners, gillnetters, potters, and trawlers started to operate in Brazilian waters, leading the occupation of the upper slope (250-500 m), mostly targeting monkfish (Lophyus gastrophysus), the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi), the Brazilian codling (Urophycis mystacea), the wreckfish (Polyprion americanus), the Argentine short-fin squid (Illex argentinus), the red crab (Chaceon notialis), and the royal crab (Chaceon ramosae). Between 2004 and 2007, chartered trawlers established a valuable fishery on deep-water shrimps (family Aristeidae), heavily exploiting the lower slope (500-1000 m). Total catches of deep-water resources varied annually from 5,756 ton in 2000 to a maximum of 19,923 ton in 2002, decreasing to nearly 11,000 ton in 2006. Despite intensive data collection, the availability of timely stock assessments, and a formal participatory process for the discussion of management plans, deep-water stocks are already considered to be overexploited due to limitations of governance. .

El reciente desarrollo de la pesca profunda en Brasil fue revisado desde perspectivas biológicas, econômicas y políticas. Este proceso se ha centrado en los sectores sureste y sur de la costa de Brasil (19°-34°S) y fue motivado por la sobrepesca de los principales recursos costeros en conjunto con una política gubernamental de arriendo de buques pesqueros. Las operaciones de pesca sobre el borde de la plataforma (100-250 m) por buques palangreros y arrastreros se intensificaron en la década del 90. Sin embargo, entre 2000 y 2001 empezaron a operar buques arrendados para la pesca con palangre, red de enmalle, nasas y arrastre en aguas brasileras y lideraron el proceso de ocupación del talud superior (250-500 m) dirigido principalmente a la captura del rape (Lophyus gastrophysus), merluza argentina (Merluccius hubbsi), brotóla de profundidad (Urophycis mystacea), chernia (Polyprion americanus), calamar argentino (Illex argentinus), cangrejo rojo (Chaceon notialis) y cangrejo real (Chaceon ramosae). Entre 2004 y 2007, buques arrendados establecieron una valorada pesquería de langostinos de profundidad (Familia Aristeidae) y explotaron intensamente los fondos del talud inferior (500-1000 m). Las capturas totales de recursos de aguas profundas variaron anualmente de 5.756 ton en 2000 a un máximo de 19.923 ton in 2002, decayendo a cerca de 11.000 ton en 2006. No obstante, que fueron recolectados datos pesqueros en forma intensas, estuviesen disponibles oportunamente evaluaciones de stock y se haya llevado a cabo un proceso formal de discusión participativa de planes de manejo para estas pesquerías, los stocks de aguas profundas han sido considerado en situación de sobrepesca debido a limitaciones de gobernabilidad.

The "alistado shrimp" (Aristeus antillensis) is one of the targets of the trawling fleet operating since 2002 along the continental slope of the Brazilian Economic Exclusive Zone between 700 and 800 m depth. Catches of the species occur mainly in two small fishing grounds located on the east coast of Espirito Santo State (19-22°S). This paper aimed to obtain the first biological data for this species along the Brazilian coast. A total of 13,797 individuals were sampled aboard fishing vessels by observers on almost all fishing hauls, corresponding to 10 to 20% of the total catch recorded in the period. Males and females are sexually mature at 25.4 and 40.2 mm carapace length, respectively, based on an analysis of the proportions of individuals with fused petasma (males) and spermatophores in the thelycum (females). The proportion of impregnated females was higher than 80% year round, suggesting a continuous reproductive cycle, although preliminary in-formation on gonadal development points to possible seasonal reproduction. In general, mature females, which attain larger sizes than males, domínate the catches (M:F = 0.12:1). However, populational groups including males and juveniles of both sexes occupy the fishing grounds in different periods of the year, probably reflecting migratory movements whose directions and driving forces are not completely understood yet. A depth-stratified population structure by sex and size is hypothesized.

La gamba de aguas profundas Aristeus antillensis es uno de los recursos explotados por la flota de arrastre, que está operando desde el año 2002 en el talud continental de la Zona Econômica Exclusiva de Brasil, entre 700 y 800 m de profundidad. Las capturas de esta especie se realizan básicamente en dos pequeños fondos de pesca que se encuentran en la costa este de la región de Espirito Santo (19-22°S). Este trabajo tiene por objetivo obtener los primeros antecedentes biológicos de esta especie en la costa brasileña. Un total de 13.797 camarones fueran muestreados en los buques pesqueros por observadores en casi todos los lances de pesca, que correspondieron entre 10 y 20%> de las capturas totales en el período. Machos y hembras están sexualmente maduros a 25,4 y 40,2 mm respectivamente (longitud de carapazón), según el análisis de las proporciones de individuos con petasma unido (machos) y telicum con espermatóforo (hembras). La proporción de hembras con espermatóforo fue superior a 80%) en todo el año, sugiriendo un ciclo reproductivo continuo. Sin embargo, informaciones preliminares sobre el desarrollo gonadal indican una posible estacionalidad en la reproducción. Generalmente, hembras adultas, que alcanzan tallas mayores que los machos, dominaron las capturas (M:F = 0,12:1). Sin embargo, grupos poblacionales, incluyendo machos e inmaduros de ambos sexos, ocupan los fondos de pesca en diferentes períodos del año, probablemente como reflejo de los movimientos migratorios, cuyas direcciones y fuerzas aún no son totalmente comprendidos. Se discute una posible estructura poblacional estratificada de sexos y tallas por el gradiente batimétrico.

The red crab Chaceon notialis is one of the three deep-sea crab species currently exploited in Brazil. The red crab fishery started in 1998 with foreign vessels that, as of 2000, have been extensively moni-tored by observers and tracked by satellite. A management plan implemented in 2005 was based only on bio-mass dynamics, as biological knowledge of the resource was limited at that date. Samples taken aboard were used to determine size at first sexual maturity for males and females by studying the allometric growth of the chelae and abdomen in relation to the carapace width (CW), the proportion of females with opened vulvae and eggs in the pleopods, and males showing copula marks on the first ambulatory legs. Morphometric maturity was attained, on average, at 8.9 cm CW (males) and 8.8 cm CW (females). The CW5% was estimated to be 6.9 and 9.7 cm CW for females, considering the vulva condition and eggs in the pleopods, respectively, and 8.4 cm CW for males. The maximum estimated proportions of ovigerous females and males with copula marks by size class were 0.8 and 0.7, respectively, suggesting an annual reproductive cycle for the species, both at the populational and individuals levels. The size composition analysis showed that up to 97% of the females caught in the fishery were immature. Given these results, enhancing trap selectivity and minimizing the mortality of ovigerous females should be considered as new and immediate goals for the management of the resource.

El cangrejo-rojo Chaceon notialis corresponde a una de las tres especies de cangrejos de profundidad que actualmente se explotan en Brasil. La pesca de cangrejo-rojo comenzó en el año 1998 por barcos extranjeros que, desde 2000 fueron intensamente vigilados por observadores y rastreados por satélites. En el año de 2005 se implemento un plan de manejo, considerando solamente el estudio de la dinámica de la biomasa del recurso, ya que el conocimiento biológico todavía era limitado. A partir de muestras obtenidas a bordo de los barcos de pesca, se estimó la talla de primera madurez de machos y hembras mediante la utilización del crecimiento alométrico de la quela y el abdomen, con respecto al ancho del caparazón (CW), proporción de hembras con vulvas abiertas y huevos en los pleópodos y machos con marcas de cópula en las primeras patas ambulatorias. La madurez morfométrica para los machos fue obtenida en promedio a 8,9 cm de CW y para las hembras a 8,8 cm de CW. El CW50./d fue estimado en 8,4 cm para machos y para hembras, tomando en cuenta la condición de la vulva o los huevos en los pleópodos, en 6,9 y 9,7 cm respectivamente. Las maximas proporciones estimadas de hembras ovígeras y machos con marcas de cópula por talla fueron de 0,8 y 0,7 respectivamente, lo que sugiere que el ciclo reproductivo a nivel poblacional e individual es anual. El análisis de la composición de tallas indicó que el 97% de las hembras capturadas, eran inmaduras. A partir de estos resultados se consideró un aumento en la selectividad de las trampas y la disminución de las hembras ovígeras en las capturas como objetivos nuevos e inmediatos para el mejor manejo de este recurso.
