Abstract The lack of water during crop growth causes damage to any production system, especially when it occurs during the initial establishment or beginning of the reproductive stage. Although cotton can be properly managed in regions with water limitation, its yield is affected at different levels according to the genetics of the cultivar adopted. Exogenous application of some organic components has shown a stress-mitigating effect and can be a valuable procedure to enhance the yield of water stress-sensitive cultivars. The objective of this work was to evaluate the benefits of exogenous application of pyruvic acid (100 µM) in cotton plants under water deficit varying the phenological stage of the crop. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, where the plants were grown in pots and subjected to seven days of water suspension, initiated individually in stages V2 and B1. Each pot contained two plants. The treatments adopted were: T1 - control, T2 - water suppression; and T3 - water suppression + pyruvate application. The design was randomized blocks in a factorial scheme (3 × 3) with three replicates. The reductions in gas exchange and growth of the cultivars BRS Seridó, CNPA 7MH and FM 966 were more significant in the reproductive stage, especially for FM 966, which was more sensitive. Pyruvate application reduced the effects of water suppression on boll production by 31% in BRS Seridó and 34% in CNPA 7MH and FM 966.

Resumo A falta d’água durante o crescimento da cultura traz prejuízos em qualquer sistema de produção, especialmente quando ocorre durante o estabelecimento inicial ou início da fase reprodutiva. O algodoeiro, apesar de ter larga habilidade para manejo em regiões com limitação hídrica, tem o rendimento afetado, com níveis diferenciados em função da genética do cultivar adotado. A aplicação exógena de alguns componentes orgânicos tem demonstrado efeito mitigador do estresse podendo ser um aditivo valioso para impulsionar a produtividade de cultivares sensíveis ao estresse hídrico. Neste trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar os benefícios da aplicação exógena de ácido pirúvico (100 µM) em algodoeiros sob déficit hídrico variando a fase fenológica da cultura. O ensaio foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, onde as plantas foram cultivadas em vasos e submetidas a sete dias de suspensão hídrica, iniciadas, individualmente, nas fases V2 e B1. Cada vaso conteve duas plantas. Os tratamentos adotados foram: T1- controle, T2 - supressão hídrica; T3- supressão hídrica + aplicação de piruvato. O delineamento foi em blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial (3 × 3) com três repetições. Foi observado que as reduções nas trocas gasosas e crescimento das cultivares BRS Seridó, CNPA 7MH e FM 966 foram mais expressivas na fase reprodutiva, especialmente da última que se mostrou mais sensível. A aplicação de piruvato mitigou os efeitos da supressão hídrica sobre a produção de capulhos 31% na BRS Seridó e 34% em CNPA 7MH e FM 966.

ABSTRACT Introduction Thyroid carcinomas include a wide spectrum of lesions. The well-differentiated subtype, 90% of all thyroid cancers, is associated with an excellent prognosis. Several risk factors are described. The most important environmental factor is exposure to ionizing radiation, although shift work is proposed as a prominent factor. The common clinical presentation of thyroid carcinoma is a thyroid nodule detected by the patient or imaging tests. Case Report This is a 25-year-old nurse who came to the occupational health service with complaints of enlarged cervical nodes. She denied prominent personal background. She had a palpable mass in the thyroid and right supraclavicular region and dysphonia with six to nine months of evolution. She underwent cervical ultrasound with biopsy that revealed papillary thyroid carcinoma with lymph node metastasis. She had surgery and radioactive iodine treatment. In occupational health, she was conditioned to shift work. Discussion Surgical removal and radioactive iodine treatment cures more than 90% of localized and well-differentiated thyroid carcinomas. Well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma with metastases is associated with a 90% ten-year survival if there is good iodine supply and the tumor goes into remission after treatment. A relationship between circadian cycle dysfunction and thyroid carcinoma is proposed, so it is important to decide the ability to work at night in the follow-up period of the disease. Conclusion The relevance of the case arises with the aim of alerting to the advantages of an Occupational Health service and its ability to provide a timely and rapid response to various pathologies of the working population with important health gains. This case also offers a rationale for the management and time of shift work avoidance in the post-diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma.

RESUMO Introdução Os carcinomas da tiroide incluem um vasto espetro de lesões. O subtipo bem diferenciado, 90% de todos os cancros da tiroide, está associado a excelente prognóstico. Vários fatores de risco estão descritos. O fator ambiental mais importante é a exposição a radiação ionizante, embora o trabalho por turnos possa ter algum efeito cancerígeno, segundo alguns investigadores. A apresentação clínica comum do carcinoma da tiroide é um nódulo tiroideu detetado pelo doente ou exames de imagem. Descrição do caso Trata-se de uma enfermeira de 25 anos, que recorreu ao apoio de Medicina Curativa, inserida no serviço de Saúde Ocupacional com queixas de gânglios cervicais aumentados. Negava antecedentes pessoais de destaque. Apresentava uma massa palpável na região tiroideia e supraclavicular direita e disfonia com seis a nove meses de evolução. Realizou ecografia cervical com biópsia que revelou carcinoma papilar da tiroide com metástase ganglionar. Fez cirurgia e tratamento com iodo radioativo. Ficou com aptidão condicionada para trabalho por turnos. Discussão A remoção cirúrgica e tratamento com iodo radioativo permite uma cura superior a 90% dos carcinomas da tiroide localizados e bem diferenciados. O carcinoma da tiroide bem diferenciado com metástases está associado a uma sobrevida a dez anos de 90% se existir bom aporte de iodo e remissão após o tratamento. Está proposta uma relação entre a disfunção do ciclo circadiano e carcinoma da tiroide, pelo que é importante decidir a aptidão para o trabalho noturno no período de seguimento da doença. Conclusão A pertinência do caso surge com o objetivo de alertar para as vantagens de um serviço de Saúde Ocupacional e a sua capacidade de dar resposta atempada e célere a diversas patologias da população laboral, com importantes ganhos em saúde. Este caso também oferece um raciocínio sobre a gestão e tempo de evicção do trabalho por turnos no pós-diagnóstico de carcinoma da tiroide.

Cisplatin is an effective antineoplastic agent, but its use is limited by its nephrotoxicity caused by the oxidative stress in tubular epithelium of nephrons. On the other hand, regular exercise provides beneficial adaptations in different tissues and organs. As with many drugs, dosing is extremely important to get the beneficial effects of exercise. Thus, we aimed to investigate the influence of exercise intensity and frequency on cisplatin-induced (20 mg/kg) renal damage in mice. Forty male Swiss mice were divided into five experimental groups (n=8 per group): 1) sedentary; 2) low-intensity forced swimming, three times per week; 3) high-intensity forced swimming, three times per week; 4) low-intensity forced swimming, five times per week; and 5) high-intensity forced swimming, five times per week. Body composition, renal structure, functional indicators (plasma urea), lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activity, expression of genes related to antioxidant defense, and inflammatory and apoptotic pathways were evaluated. Comparisons considered exercise intensity and frequency. High lipid peroxidation was observed in the sedentary group compared with trained mice, regardless of exercise intensity and frequency. Groups that trained three times per week showed more benefits, as reduced tubular necrosis, plasma urea, expression of CASP3 and Rela (NFkB subunit-p65) genes, and increased total glutathione peroxidase activity. No significant difference in Nfe2l2 (Nrf2) gene expression was observed between groups. Eight weeks of regular exercise training promoted nephroprotection against cisplatin-mediated oxidative injury. Exercise frequency was critical for nephroprotection.

Kawasaki disease (KD) can be a primary cause of an acute coronary syndrome in young adults, with or without a history of KD during childhood. We report a 31year old female, admitted for acute chest pain. She had negative T waves on DIII and AVF leads of the electrocardiogram. Troponins were positive. A cardiac magnetic resonance was compatible with an acute inferior myocardial infarction. In the coronary angiography she had a calcified complete occlusion of the proximal right coronary artery. The left coronary artery had no visible lesions. A computed angiogram showed an extensive calcified and thrombotic aneurysm of the right coronary artery, compatible with Kawasaki disease (KD). The patient was discharged seven days after admission in good conditions.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of supra-nutritional level of selected B vitamins in different types of diet on broiler performance. Two experiments were conducted using male and female one-day-old chicks (n=288 each; initial body weights in experiment I and II was, respectively, 47.57 ± 0.43, and 47.98 ± 0.31) reared in batteries up to 18 days. In experiment I, the chicks were fed a corn and soybean meal-based diet and, in experiment II, a diet containing oxidized animal by-product meals and soybean oil was used. Both experiments followed a completely randomized design in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement, consisting of the factors: i) supplementation levels of selected B vitamins (control, 3- or 6-times control of the vitamins riboflavin, pantothenic acid, niacin, folic acid and vitamin B12); ii) dietary nutritional density (low or high), totaling 6 treatments and 8 replicates of 6 birds each (3 males and 3 females). As result of this study, in Exp. I, chicks showed higher weight gain (741.1 g vs. 697.3 g) and feed intake (920.2 vs. 878.5 g) when fed low-nutritional density diet with supra-nutritional vitamin level 6-times higher than the control. However, this effect was not found in the performance of chickens fed high-nutritional density diet. Despite the poor quality of the ingredients used in Exp. II, no statistical effect was shown of the use of vitamin super-dose in rations with different dietary nutrient density. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly improved for chickens fed high-nutritional density diet (1.191 vs. 1.246 in experiment I, 1.244 vs. 1.275 in experiment II, p<0.01). We conclude that birds fed a vegetable diet formulated with low-dietary density improved body weight (BW) and feed intake (FI) when receiving supra-nutritional levels of vitamins 6-times higher than the control.

Resumo A fidelidade dos genomas é defendida por mecanismos conhecidos como sistemas de repetições palindrômicas curtas agrupadas e regularmente interespaçadas (CRISPRs). Três tipos de sistemas CRISPR II (CRISPR1-cas, CRISPR2 e CRISPR3-cas) têm sido identificados em cepas de enterococos isolados de amostras clínicas e ambientais. O objetivo deste estudo foi observar a distribuição dos CRISPR1-cas, CRISPR2 e CRISPR3-cas em cepas não-clínicas de Enterococcus faecalis e Enterococcus faecium isoladas de amostras alimentícias e fecais, incluindo animais marinhos selvagens. A presenca dos CRISPRs foi determinada por PCR em 120 cepas de enterococos, sendo 67 E. faecalis e 53 E. faecium. É o primeiro relato da presença do sistema CRISPRs nas estirpes E. faecalis e E. faecium isoladas de amostras fecais de animais marinhos selvagens. Os resultados mostraram que em cepas não-clínicas, os CRISPRs foram mais frequentemente detectados em E. faecalis do que em E. faecium. E as frequências de CRISPR1-cas e CRISPR2 foram maiores (60%) em cepas de E. faecalis isoladas de fezes de animais, quando comparadas à amostras de alimentos. Ambas as cepas apresentaram baixas freqüências de CRISPR3-cas (8,95% e 1,88%). Em conclusão, as diferenças nos habitats das espécies de enterococos podem estar relacionadas com os resultados observados na distribuição dos sistemas CRISPRs.

Abstract The fidelity of the genomes is defended by mechanism known as Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) systems. Three Type II CRISPR systems (CRISPR1- cas, CRISPR2 and CRISPR3-cas) have been identified in enterococci isolates from clinical and environmental samples. The aim of this study was to observe the distribution of CRISPR1-cas, CRISPR2 and CRISPR3-cas in non-clinical strains of Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium isolates from food and fecal samples, including wild marine animals. The presence of CRISPRs was evaluated by PCR in 120 enterococci strains, 67 E. faecalis and 53 E. faecium. It is the first report of the presence of the CRISPRs system in E. faecalis and E. faecium strains isolated from wild marine animal fecal samples. The results showed that in non-clinical strains, the CRISPRs were more frequently detected in E. faecalis than in E. faecium. And the frequencies of CRISPR1-cas and CRISPR2 were higher (60%) in E. faecalis strains isolated from animal feces, compared to food samples. Both strains showed low frequencies of CRISPR3-cas (8.95% and 1.88%). In conclusion, the differences in the habitats of enterococcal species may be related with the results observe in distribution of CRISPRs systems.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta um programa experimental para determinar a resistência residual de vigas em concreto armado bi-apoiadas sujeitas à flexão pura após incêndios. Também é apresentado um modelo numérico tridimensional, não linear, em elementos finitos, capaz de prever o comportamento térmico e mecânico (residual) deste tipo de elemento estrutural. As vigas não apresentaram redução significativa na sua resistência residual até 120 min. de exposição ao fogo, caracterizando um bom desempenho após incêndio. O modelo numérico mostrou-se preciso na previsão das temperaturas e da carga de ruptura residual quando comparado aos resultados experimentais.

Abstract This paper presents an experimental program to determine the residual strength of simple supported reinforced concrete beams subject to bending after fire. Also presented is a three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element model capable of predicting the thermal and mechanical (residual) behavior of this type of structural element. The experimental results obtained with beams under up to 120 min. of fire exposure show that it did not have significant reduction in their residual resistance. The numerical model was accurate in predicting temperatures and residual strength when compared to the experimental results.

Resumen Este artículo presenta un programa experimental para determinar la resistencia residual de vigas en hormigón armado bi-apoyadas sujetas a la flexión pura después de los incendios. También se presenta un modelo tridimensional, no lineal, en elementos finitos capaces de predecir el comportamiento térmico y mecánico (residual) de este tipo de elemento estructural. Las vigas presentaron hasta 120 minutos de exposición al fuego, un buen desempeño después de incendio, no presentando una reducción significativa en su resistencia residual, y el modelo numérico se mostró preciso en la previsión de las temperaturas y de la carga de ruptura residual cuando es comparado con los resultados experimentales.

ABSTRACT Corn is the main energy feed used in broiler chickens rations in most countries. In the literature, there are indications that high density corn segregated in densimetric table contains higher value of metabolizable energy than the corresponding fraction of low density, but the reasons are not clear. This study was conducted to determine the metabolizable energy of different types of corn, segregated in densimetric table, for poultry. The corn types were selected by the texture of grain (flint, semi-dent and dent) and were planted in the same area. Semi-dent grain corn was used as standard, and the flint and dent grains were segregated in a densimetric table to separate 25% of the total as high density and 25% as low density. The flint, semi-dent and dent corn and the high and low density fractions of flint and dent corn were used in a metabolism assay with broiler chickens from 20 to 29 days of age, with 9 replicates, to determine the Nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (MEn). The density of the different types of corn, measured as hectoliter weight, varied from 683 to 768 g/L for dent corn and from 778 to 802 g/L for the flint corn; the density of the unsegregated semi-dent corn was intermediate. MEn ranged from 3.109 to 3.194 kcal/g for dent corn and from 3.141 to 3.211 kcal/g for flint corn. MEn of the high density dent corn, 3.194 kcal/g, was higher (p<0.05) than that of the low density fraction, 3.109 kcal/g. Segregation of flint corn did not result in fractions with contrasting MEn values. For dent corn, segregation in densimetric table was effective, resulting in a fraction with improved MEn for chickens.

Resumo A pressão lateral do concreto fresco gera uma carga que possui grande influência no dimensionamento das fôrmas de pilares, paredes e faces laterais das vigas. Sua previsão deve ser realizada de modo que se aproxime bem dos valores suportados pelas fôrmas, evitando-se, assim, o superdimensionamento ou subdimensionamento dessas estruturas provisórias que representam até 12% do custo total da obra. O cálculo da pressão lateral que o concreto fresco exerce sobre as fôrmas envolve diversas variáveis, sendo uma delas a velocidade de concretagem. O principal objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a influência da velocidade de concretagem sobre a pressão lateral do concreto fresco calculada a partir de modelos teóricos apresentados por normas e referências internacionais. Para isso, foram realizadas medições da velocidade de concretagem em pilares de cinco obras de Goiânia e calculadas as pressões máximas suportadas por suas respectivas fôrmas, a partir das dimensões e dos vãos entre os apoios dos elementos que as constituíam. Os resultados obtidos apontam que as velocidades de concretagem em campo chegam a 248,57 m/h, superando os valores limitados pelos métodos teóricos de cálculo, e que as estimativas da pressão realizadas a partir das velocidades medidas in loco ultrapassam os valores máximos suportados pelas fôrmas em até 603,75 vezes. Assim, concluiu-se que é necessária a formulação de equações para estimar a pressão lateral do concreto fresco a altas velocidades de concretagem, conforme as atuais práticas no mercado da construção civil.

Abstract The fresh concrete lateral pressure generates a load that has great influence in the design of the formworks of columns, walls and lateral faces of the beams.Its prediction must be performed in such a way in order to approach precisely well over the rate values supported by the formworks, avoiding, therefore, the oversizing or undersizing of these temporary structures which represent up to 12% of the total cost of the construction. The calculation of the lateral pressure that fresh concrete exerts on the formworks involves several variables; one of them is the placement rate. The main objective of this work was to study the influence of the placement rate, in situ, on the lateral pressure of fresh concrete calculated from theoretical models presented by norms and international references. For this purpose, measurements of the placement rate were conducted on columns of five building work places at Goiânia city, Goiás, Brazil and it was calculated the maximum pressure supported by their respective formworks from the dimensions and spans between the supports of the components that constituted them. The obtained results indicate that the placement rate in the field observations reach 249 m/h, exceeding the values limited by the theoretical methods of calculation, and that the lateral pressure estimation produced from the placement rate measured in situ exceed the maximum values supported by the formworks up to 604 times. Thus, it was concluded that it is necessary to adjust equations to estimate the lateral pressure of fresh concrete at high rate of concrete placement, according to the current practices in the construction market.

Diffuse Lung Disease (DLD) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality, however in Chile we are lacking of epidemiological data on this condition. Our aim is communicate the first report of a prospective registry of DLD patients treated at bronchopulmonary unit of DIPRECA hospital. Methods: Cross-sectional study in patients referred to our bronchopulmonary unit under suspicion of DLD. Diagnosis was confirmed by chest computed tomography and informed consent was approved by patients. Data regarding clinical, serological, pulmonary function tests and echocardiography were collected from 2014 up to date. Results: 30 patients were analysed, their median of age was 76.5 years-old (Interquartile Range 68-80), 56.7% were women, median duration of disease: 4 years (IQR 1-10.6) and 43% has smoking history Most frequent signs and symptoms were crackles (97%), dyspnoea (90%) and cough (57%). Comorbidities: 3% had asthma, 3% chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 6.7% connective tissue diseases. Radiological findings: 20% had DLD with usual interstitial pneumonia pattern (UIP), 23% DLD possible UIP, 30% DLD inconsistent with UIP, 14% chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis and 13% nonspecific interstitial pneumonia. Serology: 18% had positive rheumatoid factor of which only one case had rheumatoid arthritis, 67% had positive antinuclear antibodies (ANA), 17% ANCA positive of which only one case of clinical vasculitis. Spirometry was mainly normal (52%) or restrictive (45%). Echocardiography showed pulmonary hypertension mainly mild in 52% of patients. No significant association was found between titles of ANA ≥ 1/320 and gender, smoking or radiological pattern. Conclusions: Our demographic and radiological findings are similar to those reported in literature; however, the highlights in our cohort are the increased frequency of female gender and positive ANA without history or clinical manifestation of connective tissue diseases.

La enfermedad pulmonar difusa (EPD) es causa importante de morbimortalidad; a pesar de esto no tenemos datos epidemiológicos en Chile. Nuestro objetivo es comunicar el primer reporte del registro prospectivo de pacientes con EPD atendidos en la unidad de broncopulmonar del hospital DIPRECA. Métodos: Estudio de corte transversal en pacientes derivados alpoliclínico broncopulmonar del hospital DIPRECA por sospecha de EPD. En caso de confirmación diagnóstica por tomografía computada de tórax y consentimiento informado aprobado por los pacientes, se compilaron datos clínicos, serológicos, pruebas de función pulmonar y ecocardiografía, desde 2014 hasta la fecha. Resultados: Se analizaron 30 pacientes la mediana de su edad fue 76,5 años (rango intercuartílico 68-80), 56,7% eran mujeres, duración mediana de la enfermedad: 4 años (RIC 1-10,6)y 43% con antecedentes de tabaquismo. Los síntomas y signos más frecuente fueron crujidos (97%), disnea (90%) y tos (57%). Comorbilidades: 3% tenía asma, 3% enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica y 6,7% enfermedades del tejido conectivo. Hallazgos radiológicos: 20% tenía EPD con patrón de neumonía intersticial usual (UIP), 23% EPD posible UIP, 30% EPD inconsistente con UIP, 14% neumonitis por hipersensibilidad crónica y 13% neumonía intersticial no específica. Serología: 18% tenía factor reumatoide positivo de ellos sólo uno de los casos tenía artritis reumatoide, el 67% tenía anticuerpos antinucleares (ANA) positivos, 17% ANCA positivo de ellos sólo un caso tenía historia de vasculitis clínica. La espirometría fue mayoritariamente normal (52%) o restrictiva (45%). Ecocardiografía detectó hipertensión pulmonar mayoritariamente leve en 52% de los pacientes. No se encontró asociación significativa entre los títulos de ANA ≥ 1/320 en relación a género, tabaquismo o patrón radiológico. Conclusiones: Nuestros hallazgos demográficos y radiológicos son similares a los de la literatura; sin embargo, destaca en nuestra cohorte la mayor frecuencia de género femenino y ANA positivos sin historia o manifestación clínica de enfermedades del tejido conectivo.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the dietary addition of different levels of glycerin on the performance, litter moisture, pododermatitis incidence, and carcass and parts yield of broilers. In total, 1,610 broilers were reared in 35 pens with 46 birds each. A completely randomized experimental design, with five treatments with seven replicates was applied. The experimental treatments were: T1: control diet; T2: dietary inclusion of 5% glycerin from 1-42 days of age; T3: dietary inclusion of 10% glycerin from 1-42 days of age; T4: dietary inclusion of 5% glycerin from 7-42 days of age; T5: dietary inclusion of 10% glycerin from 7-42 days of age. The diets containing glycerin fed since the pre-starter period improved broiler weight gain and feed conversion ratio, but did not influence feed intake or livability. At the end of the experiment, the production efficiency index of the broilers fed 10% glycerin during the entire rearing period was significantly reduced compared with the other treatments. Litter moisture in the pens of broilers fed 10% glycerin during the entire rearing period was higher compared to the other treatments since day 21.Diets containing 10% glycerin, both for the entire rearing period (1-42 days) or only after the pre-starter phase (7-42 days), influenced broiler performance and incidence of severe pododermatitis, reducing the production efficiency indexes at 42 days. Glycerin may be added up to 5% in broiler´s diets with no effect on performance, litter moisture and carcass yield, indicating that this co-product of the biodiesel industry can be used as an alternative feedstuff for broilers.
