RESUMO: O presente trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a influência da temperatura e da luz sobre a germinação das sementes de Stigmaphyllon blanchetii, conhecida popularmente como rabo-de-rato. Na primeira etapa da pesquisa, foi avaliado o efeito de três temperaturas constantes (20 oC, 25 oC e 30 oC) e uma alternada de 20-30 oC. Na segunda etapa, para simulação da luz sob diferentes qualidades espectrais, foram utilizadas quatro condições de luminosidade (luz branca, luz vermelha, vermelho distante e ausência de luz). As temperaturas que proporcionaram melhor germinação e desenvolvimento para S. blanchetii foram a constante de 30 oC e alternada de 20-30 oC. As sementes germinaram tanto na presença como na ausência de luz, porém houve maior germinação e desenvolvimento das plântulas na ausência de luz, podendo ser classificadas em fotoblásticas negativas preferenciais.

ABSTRACT: The objective of the present work was to study the influence of temperature and light on germination of seeds of Stigmaphyllon blanchetii, popularly known as rat tail. The first stage of the research evaluated the effect of three constant temperatures (20 oC, 25 oC and 30 oC) and an alternating temperature (20-30 oC). In the second stage, for simulation of different types of light, four conditions of luminosity (white, red, far red and absence of light) were used. The temperatures that provided the best germination and development for S. blanchetii are the constant (30 oC) and the alternating (20-30 oC) ones. The seeds germinated both in the presence and absence of light, but there was greater germination and seedling development in the absence of light; thus they were classified as preferential negative photoblastic seeds.

RESUMO: Alelopatia é definida como a capacidade que determinadas plantas e microrganismos têm de interferir no metabolismo de outras espécies, por meio de substâncias liberadas no ambiente, podendo ser uma alternativa de combate às plantas daninhas e doenças. Nesse contexto, este estudo teve por objetivos avaliar o potencial alelopático e identificar os grupos de metabólitos secundários de Paspalum maritimum Trind. As espécies Lactuca sativa, Digitaria insularis, Emilia coccinea e Portulaca oleracea foram utilizadas como plantas receptoras. Para avaliar o potencial alelopático, foram obtidos o extrato etanólico da parte aérea e radicular da espécie doadora. Os efeitos potencialmente alelopáticos foram avaliados por meio de testes de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação e crescimento inicial de plântulas. Foi realizada também a análise fitoquímica do extrato, para identificar os metabólitos secundários. O extrato etanólico, de ambas as partes da planta, causaram efeito alelopático nas espécies receptoras. Foi detectada, na fração mais ativa da parte aérea de P. maritimum, a presença de taninos condensados, chalconas e auronas, flavononas, esteroides e saponinas.

ABSTRACT: Allelopathy is defined as the ability of certain plants and microorganisms to interfere with the metabolism of other species through substances released into the environment, being an alternative to control weeds and diseases. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the allelopathic potential and identify groups of secondary metabolites of Paspalum maritimum Trind. The species Lactuca sativa, Digitaria insularis, Emilia coccinea, and Portulaca oleracea were used as recipient plants. The ethanolic extract was obtained from shoot and root of donor species to evaluate the allelopathic potential. Potentially allelopathic effects were evaluated by means of germination tests, germination speed index, and initial seedling growth. A phytochemical analysis of the extract was also performed to identify the secondary metabolites. The ethanolic extract from both plant parts had an allelopathic effect on recipient species. The presence of condensed tannins, chalcones and aurones, flavonones, steroids, and saponins were detected in the most active fraction of the shoot of P. maritimum.

Exercise is known to cause a vasodilatory response; however, the correlation between the vasorelaxant response and different training intensities has not been investigated. Therefore, this study evaluated the vascular reactivity and lipid peroxidation after different intensities of swimming exercise in rats. Male Wistar rats (aged 8 weeks; 250-300 g) underwent forced swimming for 1 h whilst tied to loads of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8% of their body weight, respectively (groups G3, G4, G5, G6 and G8, respectively; n=5 each). Immediately after the test, the aorta was removed and suspended in an organ bath. Cumulative relaxation in response to acetylcholine (10−12-10−4 M) and contraction in response to phenylephrine (10−12-10−5 M) were measured. Oxidative stress was estimated by determining malondialdehyde concentration. The percentages of aorta relaxation were significantly higher in G3 (7.9±0.20), G4 (7.8±0.29), and G5 (7.9±0.21), compared to the control group (7.2±0.04), while relaxation in the G6 (7.4±0.25) and G8 (7.0±0.06) groups was similar to the control group. In contrast, the percentage of contraction was significantly higher in G6 (8.8 ±0.1) and G8 (9.7±0.29) compared to the control (7.1±0.1), G3 (7.3±0.2), G4 (7.2±0.1) and G5 (7.2±0.2%) groups. Lipid peroxidation levels in the aorta were similar to control levels in G3, G4 and G5, but higher in G6 and G8, and significantly higher in G8 (one-way ANOVA). These results indicate a reduction in vasorelaxing activity and an increase in contractile activity in rat aortas after high-intensity exercise, followed by an increase in lipid peroxidation.

Avaliaram-se a composição química e a cinética da digestibilidade ruminal in situ da matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB) e fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) da forragem de quatro espécies de Brachiaria, com 56 dias de crescimento, coletadas por corte manual. Foram utilizadas três vacas mestiças Holandês x Zebu, fistuladas no rúmen. Foram observados teores de 21,0; 21,1; 20,5 e 19,6% de MS; 7,5; 6,4; 6,8 e 7,0% de PB; e 66,8; 70,1; 73,4 e 63,9% de FDN, respectivamente, para B. brizantha, B. decumbens, B. humidicola e B. ruziziensis. O maior valor nutricional foi da B. ruziziensis, que apresentou as mais elevadas taxas de degradação e degradabilidades efetivas (DE) da MS e da PB, e o menor teor de FDN associado à maior taxa de degradação desse nutriente. A forragem de pior qualidade nutricional foi B. humidicola, com menores valores de DE da MS e PB e maiores concentrações das frações fibrosas e indigestíveis.

The chemical composition and the ruminal in situ degradability of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of four species of Brachiaria were evaluated. The forages were harvested at 56 days of growth. Three rumen-fistulated crossbred Holstein × Zebu cows were used. The chemical composition of B. brizantha, B. decumbens, B. ruziziensis, and B. humidicola forages were, respectively: 21.0, 21.1, 20.5, and 19.6% for DM; 7.5, 6.4, 6.8, and 7.0% for CP; and 66.8, 70.1, 73.4, and 63.9% for NDF. B. ruziziensis presented the best nutritional value among the Brachiaria species, as indicated by the highest effective degradability (ED) and ruminal degradation rates of both DM and CP. B. ruziziensis also showed the highest NDF ruminal degradation rate and the lowest NDF concentration. In contrast, B. humidicola showed the worst nutritional composition, as indicated by the lowest DM and CP ED values and the highest content of indigestible and fibrous fractions.

Pneumonectomy is associated with high mortality and high rates of complications. Postpneumonectomy pulmonary edema is one of the leading causes of mortality. Little is known about its etiologic factors and its association with the inflammatory process. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the role of pneumonectomy as a cause of pulmonary edema and its association with gas exchange, inflammation, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) expression and vasoconstriction. Forty-two non-specific pathogen-free Wistar rats were included in the study. Eleven animals died during or after the procedure, 21 were submitted to left pneumonectomy and 10 to sham operation. These animals were sacrificed after 48 or 72 h. Perivascular pulmonary edema was more intense in pneumonectomized rats at 72 h (P = 0.0131). Neutrophil density was lower after pneumonectomy in both groups (P = 0.0168). There was higher immunohistochemical expression of eNOS in the pneumonectomy group (P = 0.0208), but no statistically significant difference in the expression of iNOS. The lumen-wall ratio and pO2/FiO2 ratio did not differ between the operated and sham groups after pneumonectomy. Left pneumonectomy caused perivascular pulmonary edema with no elevation of immunohistochemical expression of iNOS or neutrophil density, suggesting the absence of correlation with the inflammatory process or oxidative stress. The increased expression of eNOS may suggest an intrinsic production of NO without signs of vascular reactivity.

Malignancy of pulmonary large cell carcinomas (LCC) increases from classic LCC through LCC with neuroendocrine morphology (LCCNM) to large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (LCNEC). However, the histological classification has sometimes proved to be difficult. Because the malignancy of LCC is highly dependent on proteins with functions in the cell cycle, DNA repair, and apoptosis, p53 has been targeted as a potentially useful biological marker. p53 mutations in lung cancers have been shown to result in expression and protein expression also occurs in the absence of mutations. To validate the importance of both p53 protein expression (by immunostaining) and p53 gene mutations in lung LCC (by PCR-single strand conformational polymorphism analysis of exons 5, 6, 7, and 8) and to study their relationships with clinical factors and sub-classification we investigated the correlation of p53 abnormalities in 15 patients with LCC (5 classic LCC, 5 LCNEC, and 5 LCCNM) who had undergone resection with curative intent. Of these patients, 5/15 expressed p53 and none had mutant p53 sequences. There was a negative survival correlation with positive p53 immunostaining (P = 0.05). After adjustment for stage, age, gender, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and histological subtypes by multivariate analysis, p53 expression had an independent impact on survival. The present study indicates that p53 assessment may provide an objective marker for the prognosis of LCC irrespective of morphological variants and suggests that p53 expression is important for outcome prediction in patients with the early stages of LCC. The results reported here should be considered to be initial results because tumors from only 15 patients were studied: 5 each from LCC, LCNEC and LCCNM. This was due to the rarity of these specific diseases.

Para verificar o efeito da inclusão das interações reprodutor x rebanho e reprodutor x rebanho-ano como fator de ajustamento da heterogeneidade de variância, registros de produção de leite e gordura foram estratificados, com base no desvio-padrão fenotípico da produção de leite ajustada, em duas classes: baixo (<1.280kg) e alto (>1.280kg) desvio-padrão. Três modelos foram utilizados, sem e com interação reprodutor x rebanho e reprodutor x rebanho-ano, em análises de característica única, geral e em cada classe de desvio-padrão. Médias e componentes de variâncias foram maiores na classe de alto desvio-padrão. Na classe de baixo desvio-padrão, a herdabilidade não se alterou com a inclusão dos efeitos de interação no modelo, sendo de 0,34 para produção de leite e de 0,32 para produção de gordura. Na classe de alto desvio-padrão, as herdabilidades foram: 0,37, 0,35 e 0,36, e de 0,35, 0,32 e 0,35, para produção de leite e gordura, nos modelos sem, com interação reprodutor x rebanho e com interação reprodutor x rebanho-ano, respectivamente. A inclusão do efeito de interação reprodutor x rebanho nos modelos foi significativa (P<0,01) para produção de gordura, em análise geral e na classe de alto desvio-padrão, pelo teste da razão de verossimilhança.

In order to verify the effect of including the interactions of sire x herd and the sire x herd-year, as a adjust factor of the variance heterogeneity, registers of milk and fat yields were classified into two classes of standard deviation: low (<1.280kg) and high (>1.280kg), based on phenotypic standard deviation of the milk production adjusted. Three models, without and with interaction of sire x herd and sire x herd-year, were used in the general univariate analyses and in each standard deviation class. Averages and variance components were higher in the high standard deviation. In the class of low standard deviation, heritability didn't alter with the inclusion of the interaction effects in the model, being of 0.34 for milk yield and 0.32 for fat yield. In the class of high standard deviation, heritabilities were: 0.37, 0.35 and 0.36, and of 0.35, 0.32 and 0.35, for milk and fat yield, in the models without and with interaction of sire x herd and with interaction of sire x herd-year, respectively. The inclusion of the interaction of sire x herd was significant (P<0.01) for fat yield, in general analyses and in the high standard deviation class, in the likelihood ratio test.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos do escore da condição corporal ao parto sobre a produção e composição do leite, a curva de lactação e o padrão de mobilização de reservas corporais em vacas da raça Holandesa. Foram utilizadas 51 vacas, sendo 13 primíparas e 38 multíparas, distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, segundo a ordem de partos - primíparas e multíparas - e a classe de escore da condição corporal ao parto (ECCP) - classe 1 ECCP igual ou superior a 3,25, e classe 2 ECCP igual ou inferior a 3,0. Para avaliar o padrão de mobilização de reservas corporais, foram formados grupos de vacas em função do ECCP e do nível de produção de leite. Nas primíparas, não foram observados efeitos da ECCP sobre a produção e a composição do leite e sobre a curva da lactação, exceto para porcentagem de gordura. Nas multíparas, as vacas da classe 1 produziram mais leite e mais componentes do leite, e a curva da lactação mostrou pico de produção mais alto. As vacas de maior ECCP e maior produção de leite apresentaram padrão de mobilização de reservas corporais mais acentuado no início da lactação e maior peso corporal no pré-parto e ao parto. O peso corporal e a mudança de peso corporal ao parto e no início da lactação não foram influenciados pelo escore de condição corporal ao parto e pela produção de leite.

The effects of body condition at calving on milk yield, milk composition, lactation curve and body tissue mobilization patterns were evaluated in Holstein cows. Thirteen primiparous and 38 multiparous cows were assigned body condition scores at calving (BCC). Those with BCC equal to or greater than 3.25 were assigned to class 1; while those with BCC less than 3.25 constituted class 2. These BCC classes did not affect milk yield, milk composition (except for fat percentage) or lactation curve significantly in primiparous cows. In multiparous cows, however, class 1 individuals had higher total milk yield, higher peak milk yield, higher milk composition percentages and more effective mobilization of body tissue reserves than cows in class 2. Among those cows that had higher BCC, those with more effective mobilization of body tissue reserves at the beginning of lactation had higher milk yields. Cows with higher BCC were heavier at prepartum and at calving in comparison to cows with lower BCC. However, body weight at calving and change in body weight early in lactation were not related to body composition at calving and subsequent milk yield.

Estudaram-se o efeito do tempo de avaliação da libido sobre a conduta sexual de touros e a atividade de monta em diferentes proporções touro:vaca e verificaram-se as possíveis correlações entre libido, circunferência escrotal e qualidade seminal. Vinte touros foram selecionados por meio de exame andrológico e teste da libido e distribuídos segundo as proporções touro:vaca: T1= 1:25; T2= 1:50; T3= 1:75; e T4= 1:100, com cinco repetições em cada proporção. O aumento no tempo de avaliação do teste da libido de 10 para 15 minutos reduziu o percentual de touros classificados como questionáveis e com libido boa e elevou o percentual de touros com libido muito boa e excelente. O tempo de 10 minutos interferiu negativamente no desempenho sexual dos touros. Das 1250 vacas utilizadas nos quatro tratamentos, 738 (59,0%) foram marcadas, sendo 624 (84,5%), 112 (15,2%) e duas (0,3%) marcadas por um, dois e três touros, respectivamente. As correlações entre libido e qualidade seminal e circunferência escrotal foram baixas.

The effect of time evaluation of bull libido on sexual behavior and the bull breeding activity for different bull:cow proportions were studied. Correlations between libido and scrotal circumference and sperm quality were estimated. Twenty selected bulls based on andrologic evaluation and on libido test were randomly allotted to four treatments in the following bull:cow proportions: T1= 1:25; T2= 1:50; T3= 1:75; and T4= 1:100. The increase in the time of the libido test from 10 to 15min reduced the percentage of bulls classified as questionable and good libido, and increased the percentage of bulls with very good and excellent libido. Ten minutes of libido test negatively affected sexual activity of the bulls. Out of 1250 cows from all treatments, 738 (59.0%) were marked, according to the following numbers: by one bull, 624 cows (84.5%), by two bulls, 112 cows (15.2%) and by three bulls, 2 cows (0.3%), suggesting that in a natural multibull breeding 45-day-season-system most of the cows are mated by only one bull. The estimated correlations between libido and sperm quality and scrotal circumference were low.

Utilizaram-se 40 bezerros Holandês × Zebu distribuídos em oito tratamentos (T): leite integral (1); leite integral com óleo de soja (2); leite integral e zeranol (3); leite integral com óleo de soja e zeranol (4); colostro fermentado (5); colostro fermentado com óleo de soja (6); colostro fermentado e zeranol (7); e colostro fermentado com óleo de soja e zeranol (8) com o objetivo de avaliar o consumo de alimentos, o crescimento e a conversão alimentar de animais entre o 15º e o 60º dia de vida. Diariamente, foram fornecidos 1,5kg de concentrado contendo 23% de proteína bruta, feno de tifton (Cynodon dactylon) à vontade e três litros de leite ou colostro fermentado. O colostro fermentado proporcionou melhores resultados de peso corporal e ganho de peso quando comparado ao leite integral, mas semelhantes aos resultados com zeranol. Também promoveu maior ingestão de matéria seca em relação ao leite integral, o que resultou em desempenhos semelhantes para esses dois tipos de alimento. Não houve diferenças entre os tratamentos quanto aos componentes não-integrantes da carcaça. O tratamento com leite e zeranol resultou em maior peso de carne industrial e o com óleo de soja aumentou a proporção de gordura interna. O colostro fermentado é uma boa opção para a recria de machos leiteiros e o efeito do zeranol sobre o ganho de peso é dependente da dieta dos animais.

Forty Holstein × Zebu calves from the 15th to the 60th day of age, were divided in eight treatments (T): whole milk (1); whole milk with soybean oil (2); whole milk with zeranol (3); whole milk with soybean oil and zeranol (4); fermented colostrum (5); fermented colostrum with soybean oil (6); fermented colostrums with zeranol (7); and fermented colostrum with soybean oil and zeranol (8) to measure feed intake, growth and feed conversion. Animals were fed daily on 1.5kg of concentrate containing 23% crude protein, ad libitum tifton hay (Cynodon dactylon) and three liters of milk or fermented colostrum. Calves fed on fermented colostrum showed higher body weight and weight gain than those receiving milk and similar performance to those treated with zeranol. Animals fed on fermented colostrum had higher dry matter intake in comparison with animals fed on milk. Both groups of animals showed similar growth. No differences for non-integrant carcass compounds where found, however, calves fed on milk and receiving zeranol showed higher industrial meat yield. Diet based on soybean oil increased the proportion of internal fat. Fermented colostrum showed to be an alternative feed for growing male dairy calves and the effect of zeranol on weight gain depends on the diet.

Este trabalho foi realizado para avaliar a influência do nível de fibra, da fonte de proteína e do horário de fornecimento da ração sobre aspectos do comportamento alimentar de novilhas mestiças Holandês × Zebu. As dietas com baixa ou alta fibra, em base de cana-de-açúcar mais silagem de capim-elefante como volumoso, continham 38,7 ou 57,2% de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), respectivamente. As fontes de proteína foram o farelo de soja com alta (65,0%) ou farinha de sangue mais farelo de glúten de milho com baixa (32,2%) degradação ruminal. Dezesseis novilhas mestiças, com idade média de 14 meses e 220kgPV foram distribuídas em um delineamento experimental inteiramente ao acaso em esquema fatorial 2×2×2 (nível de fibra, fonte de proteína, horário de fornecimento), com duas repetições. O comportamento alimentar das novilhas foi determinado pela observação visual, em intervalos de 5 minutos, durante 24 horas, uma vez por mês durante o período experimental para determinar o tempo despendido com ingestão, ruminação e descanso. Novilhas alimentadas com dietas com alto nível de FDN despenderam mais tempo com ingestão e ruminação. Em relação às fontes de proteína não foi observada diferença quanto ao tempo despendido com ingestão, ruminação e descanso. O tempo despendido com ingestão foi maior quando a dieta foi fornecida pela manhã. O comportamento alimentar das novilhas foi influenciado pelo teor de FDN da dieta.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of fiber levels, protein sources and feeding time on the eating behavior of crossbred Holstein-Zebu heifers. The diets with low (38.7% NDF) or high (57.2% NDF) fiber were based on sugar-cane plus elephant grass silage. The protein sources were soybean meal for high (65%) and blood meal plus corn gluten meal for low (32.2%) ruminal degradability. Sixteen Holstein-Zebu crossbred heifers, averaging 14 months of age and 220kg of LW were allotted to a completely randomized experimental design in a 2×2×2 factorial arrangement (fiber level, protein sources and feeding time), with two replicates. The eating behavior of the heifers was determined by visual observation at 5 minutes interval during 24 hours once a month during the experimental period to determine the time expend with eating, rumination and idling activity. The heifers on high NDF diets expend more time (min/day) eating, ruminating and idling than heifers on low NDF diets. The protein sources did not influence the time spent with eating, rumination and idling. The feeding time showed difference only for the time expend eating and the heifers fed in the morning expended more time eating. The NDF levels of the diets affected the eating behavior of the heifers.

Este trabalho foi realizado para avaliar a influência do nível de fibra, da fonte de proteína e do horário de fornecimento da ração sobre o desempenho ponderal de novilhas mestiças Holandês × Zebu. As dietas com baixa ou alta fibra, à base de cana-de-açúcar mais silagem de capim-elefante como volumoso, continham 38,7 ou 57,2% de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN), respectivamente. As fontes de proteína foram o farelo de soja com alta (65,0%) ou farinha de sangue mais farelo de glúten de milho com baixa (32,2%) degradação ruminal. Dezesseis novilhas mestiças, com idade média de 14 meses e 220kgPV, foram distribuídas em um delineamento experimental inteiramente ao acaso em esquema fatorial 2×2×2 (nível de fibra, fonte de proteína, horário de fornecimento), com duas repetições. O ganho de peso diário (GPD), o consumo de matéria seca (MS), de proteína bruta (PB) e de nutrientes digestíveis totais (NDT) foram maiores para os animais que consumiram dietas com baixo teor de fibra, expresso em kg/dia, %PV e g/kg0,75. O consumo de FDN foi maior para as dietas com alto conteúdo de fibra (kg/dia, %PV e g/kg0,75). As fontes de proteína e o horário de fornecimento da ração não influenciaram o GPD e o consumo de MS, PB e NDT das novilhas. Dietas com baixa fibra resultaram em maior consumo de MS, PB e NDT, os quais permitiram maiores ganhos de peso.

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of fiber levels, protein sources and feeding time on live weight gain of crossbred Holstein-Zebu heifers. The diets based on sugar-cane and elephant grass silage were formulated for low (38.7%) and high (57.2%) neutral detergent fiber (NDF). The protein sources were soybean meal for high (65%) and blood meal plus corn gluten meal for low (32.2%) ruminal degradation. Sixteen crossbred Holstein-Zebu heifers averaging 14 months of age and 220kg of LW were allotted to a completely randomized experimental design in a 2x2x2 factorial arrangement (fiber level, protein source and feeding time), with two replicates. The daily weight gain (DWG) the intake of dry matter (DM), total digestible nutrients (TDN) and crude protein (CP) expressed as kg/day, %LW, and g/kg0,75 were higher for animals fed diets with low fiber content. However, the NDF intake was greater for animals fed diets with high fiber content (kg/day, %LW and g/w0,75). The protein sources and the feeding time did not influence the DWG, and the intake of DM, CP, and TDN of the heifers. The use of low fiber diets resulted in higher intake of DM, CP, NDT which allowed higher daily weight gain.
