ResumoO presente artigo revisa e discute aspectos da situação da pesquisa epidemiológica relacionados aos desfechos de saúde decorrentes da poluição atmosférica. Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática de estudos que avaliou os efeitos de poluentes do ar na saúde humana. A qualidade metodológica dos trabalhos também foi avaliada. A revisão identificou 432 estudos que abordaram a temática, dos quais 56 atendem aos critérios de inclusão previamente estabelecidos. Além de evidenciarem um cenário de pesquisa epidemiológica pautado na relação causa-efeito, os resultados apontam para a necessidade de revisão de parâmetros ambientais e expõem desafios e contribuições à pesquisa epidemiológica em saúde ambiental.

This article reviews and discusses some aspects of the epidemiological research situation on human health outcomes related to air pollution in Brazil. It is a systematic review of studies on the effects of polluted air exposure on human health. The context and methodological quality of the full texts were analyzed. The review identified 432 studies on the theme, 56 of which met the inclusion criteria. Besides demonstrating a scenario of epidemiological research guided by the cause-effect relationship, the results point to the need for revision of environmental parameters and expose challenges and contributions to epidemiological research in environmental health.

OBJETIVO: Descrever as causas de aposentadoria por incapacidade permanente entre servidores municipais de Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, e associar com fatores sociodemográficos. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um levantamento epidemiológico no período de janeiro de 1990 a dezembro de 2009, utilizando dados secundários sobre os servidores da Prefeitura Municipal de Uberlândia. RESULTADOS: Foram avaliadas 403 aposentadorias. Em 46% delas os indivíduos tinham idade inferior a 50 anos. A maioria (96%) se aposentou devido à doença. Os transtornos mentais e comportamentais (22,6%) e as doenças do sistema osteomuscular (23,6%) foram os mais frequentes quando o motivo da aposentadoria foi determinado por causa única ou por causa múltipla, respectivamente. Os indivíduos do gênero masculino se aposentaram mais velhos e com maior contribuição de tempo de serviço. Mesmo assim, o tempo perdido de produtividade foi maior neste gênero. CONCLUSÃO: o estudo revelou o impacto negativo das doenças crônicas em uma população em idade produtiva, com alta percentagem de aposentadorias precoces. Políticas públicas no âmbito ocupacional com o objetivo de promoção, prevenção e reabilitação dos trabalhadores constituem em ações imperativas para a reversão deste quadro.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the causes of retirement for permanent disability among workers at the Municipality of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, associating them with sociodemographic factors. METHODS: An epidemiological survey was conducted from January 1990 to December 2009, using data on the employees of the municipality of Uberlândia. RESULTS: Were evaluated 403 retirements. In 46% of these individuals were younger than 50 years. Most (96%) retired due to illness. Mental and behavioral disorders (22.6%) and diseases of the musculoskeletal system (23.6%) were the most frequent reason of retirement when it was determined because single or multiple causes, respectively. The male individuals retired older and with more service time contribution. Still, the time lost productivity was higher in this genre. CONCLUSION: The study revealed the negative impact of non-communicable chronic diseases in a population of working age, with a high percentage of early retirements. Public policies in the occupational context with the objective of promotion, prevention and rehabilitation of workers constitute mandatory actions to reverse this situation.

IntroductionThe effects of piperonyl butoxide (PBO) on the toxicity of the organophosphate temephos (TE) and the role of esterases in the resistance of Aedes aegypti to this insecticide were evaluated.MethodsA. aegypti L4 larvae susceptible and resistant to TE were pre-treated with PBO solutions in acetone at concentrations of 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2% for 24h and subsequently exposed to a diagnostic concentration of 0.02mg/L aqueous TE solution. The esterase activity of the larvae extracts pre-treated with varying PBO concentrations and exposed to TE for three time periods was determined.ResultsAt concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2%, PBO showed a significant synergistic effect with TE toxicity. High levels of esterase activity were associated with the survival of A. aegypti L4 larvae exposed to TE only.ConclusionsThe results of the biochemical assays suggest that PBO has a significant inhibitory effect on the total esterase activity in A. aegypti larvae.

Configurada como um dos mais importantes problemas de saúde pública do mundo, a dengue atinge especialmente países com clima tropical, como o Brasil. O controle biológico por meio da utilização de peixes larvófagos aparece como alternativa para reduzir os índices de infestação do vetor da dengue. O presente trabalho objetiva avaliar e descrever condições em que peixes da espécie Poecilia reticulata possam ser utilizados como controladores biológicos de larvas de Aedes aegypti em ambiente doméstico. Para tanto, o potencial larvófago diário (observação direta) de diferentes grupos de P. reticulata foi calculado considerando-se a influência do sexo e do tamanho dos espécimes empregados. Os resultados dos ensaios revelaram que o potencial larvófago de P. reticulata varia com o sexo. Observou-se também que a capacidade controladora do grupo composto apenas por fêmeas foi cerca de duas vezes maior quando comparada à dos machos da espécie.

Configured as an important public health problem in the world, the dengue fever affects tropical countries, like Brazil. Biological control through the use of larvivorous fish appears as an alternative to reduce the infestation rates of the dengue vector. This work aims to evaluate and describe conditions under which Poecilia reticulata fishes can be used as biological controllers of Aedes aegypti in a domestic environment. Thus, the daily larvivorous potential (direct observation) of different groups of P. reticulata was calculated, considering the influence of sex and size of the used specimens. The test results revealed that P. reticulatalarvivorous potential ranges with sex, and found that the ability of the group composed only of females was about twice as high compared to that of males of the species.
