Abstract This work proposes models to estimate the resistance of hollow and grouted concrete blocks prisms based on the compressive strength of their components. A database composed of 27,426 tests results on hollow and grouted prisms, mortar, grout and concrete blocks was assessed, grouped into 875 samples. Different statistical analysis models were proposed, and the best model was selected for each predetermined block resistance range. The blocks strength r ranges are Range 1 (up to 8 MPa), Range 2 (from 8 to 18 MPa) and Range 3 (above of 18 MPa). An adjustment factor of 95% confidence was calculated for each model. When comparing the results of the models with the results estimated by the design codes, it was observed that, in general, the estimates of the models of hollow and grouted prisms were similar to those of prism resistance of ABNT NBR 16868-1 (2020), except for the Range 3 resistance, in which the code is more conservative, and the proposed model with the intrinsic adjustment factor estimated values lower than those proposed by the norm. Regarding the international standards, AS-3700 (2017), TMS 602 (2021) and CSA S304 (2014) presented more conservative estimates, while Eurocode 6 (2020) adapted better to the results of the proposed models. Resumo Este trabalho propõe modelos para estimar a resistência de prismas ocos e grauteados de blocos de concreto com base na resistência à compressão de seus componentes. Um banco de dados composto por 27.426 resultados de ensaios a compressão de prismas ocos e grauteados, argamassas, grautes e blocos de concreto, agrupados em. Rupture by geometric instability is a common characteristic in slender walls. Codes for the design of slender walls use the slenderness ratio (λ) as a parameter for which their methods are valid. The Brazilian standard has a specific method for the design of highly slender walls with λ > 30 that does not take into account the tensile strength of the masonry. To evaluate the behavior of high slenderness walls and the sensitivity to tensile strength, a finite element model was developed using Abaqus to simulate three experiments from the literature. The results proved the ability of the modeling to represent the behavior of slender walls with 20% error for the out-of-plane displacements and vertical load bearing capacity. It was concluded that the post buckling behavior of the walls is sensitive to tensile strength and negligible for determining the critical buckling load. RESUMO O artigo traz resultados de análise de blocos produzidos em indústria por meio de máquina hidráulica vibro – prensa e de amostras extraídas do próprio bloco, logo com mesmo traço e processo de vibração/compactação. Os blocos e amostras foram submetidos à ensaios de resistência à compressão axial e os resultados foram correlacionados. Tal fato é inédito na literatura, pois empregou-se blocos fabricados em indústria e amostras cortadas do próprio bloco para as análises. Ao correlacionar os valores de resistência à compressão dos blocos BR4 e BR 16 e suas respectivas amostras aos 02, 07 e 28 dias; verificou-se que aos 02 dias a resistência da amostra é comparativamente maior que a resistência do bloco inteiro. ABSTRACT This article results from the analysis of blocks produced in industry using a hydraulic vibro-press machine and samples extracted from the block itself, therefore with the same trace and vibration/compaction process. The blocks and samples were subjected to axial compression resistance tests and the results were correlated. This fact is unprecedented in the literature, as blocks manufactured in industry and samples cut from the block itself were used for analysis. By correlating the compressive strength values of blocks BR4 and BR 16 and their respective samples at 02, 07 and 28 days; it was found that at 2 days the resistance of the sample is comparatively greater than the resistance of the entire block. After 28 days, the resistance ratio tends to decrease, remaining around 2.0. Abstract: This study presents a computational model to analyze structural masonry shear walls behavior considering the effects of mortar joint cracking on loss of stiffness. The simplified equivalent frame model was used but including link elements between the frame node to simulate the effects of cracking. The analyses were conducted using the SAP2000 computer program and consisted of modeling four shear walls on a 1/3 scale which were experimentally assessed. The results indicated that the proposed computational modeling approach consistently reproduced the effects of cracking at mortar joints, accurately simulating the nonlinear behavior of masonry. Resumo: O presente trabalho consistiu na elaboração de um modelo computacional para avaliar o comportamento de paredes de contraventamento de alvenaria estrutural de blocos considerando-se os efeitos da fissuração das juntas de argamassa na perda de rigidez. Com esse intuito foi utilizado o modelo simplificado de barras equivalentes, incluindo-se elementos de ligação entre as barras para simular numericamente os efeitos da fissuração. As análises foram realizadas utilizando-se o programa computacional SAP2000 e consistiram na modelagem de quatro paredes de contraventamento na escala 1/3 que foram ensaiadas experimentalmente. Os resultados indicaram que a modelagem computacional idealizada reproduziu de forma consistente os efeitos da fissuração na junta de argamassa, simulando adequadamente o comportamento não linear da alvenaria. ABSTRACT Carbonation chambers, in general, are used in civil engineering laboratories both for verification tests of the useful life of reinforced concrete, and for CO2 curing tests of unreinforced cementitious materials. These chambers can be purchased from specialized manufacturers at a high cost, or they can be built by the researchers themselves. It so happens that in the literature there is no manual for making and operating an accelerated carbonation chamber. It is observed that its development and manufacture depend a lot on the needs and financial conditions of the research, with no standard or Technical Norm to be followed. RESUMO O comportamento da alvenaria estrutural resulta do desempenho de cada componente: unidades, juntas de argamassa, grautes e armaduras. Comercialmente, os blocos para alvenaria são produzidos com concreto seco ou zero-slump. Sua dosagem e propriedades físicas se diferem consideravelmente dos concretos convencionais e dependem da eficiência de compactação das máquinas vibroprensas. Ensaiar elementos de alvenaria em tamanho natural é dispendioso e requer uma infraestrutura específica. Nessa perspectiva, modelagens computacionais baseadas em formulações numéricas como o Método dos Elementos Finitos (FEM) podem se tornar alternativas viáveis e de grande potencial. Este trabalho objetiva analisar numérica e experimentalmente a influência do tipo de agregado nas propriedades físicas e, sobretudo, mecânicas (módulo secante e resistência à compressão) de blocos vazados de concreto para alvenaria estrutural. Foram testadas três resistências de bloco (6, 12 e 24 MPa), contendo três tipos de agregado (basalto, gnaisse e calcário). Dos resultados, observou-se que em blocos menos resistentes a porosidade das misturas influenciou mais as propriedades mecânicas que a rigidez do agregado. À medida que os concretos se tornam mais densos e resistentes, esse comportamento muda. Os modelos implementados e calibrados pelos resultados experimentais reproduziram satisfatoriamente o modo de ruptura dos blocos, os resultados de módulo e de resistência.

ABSTRACT The structural masonry behavior results from the performance of each component: units, mortar joints, grouts, and reinforcement. Commercially, masonry blocks are made with called dry or zero-slump concrete. Its dosage and physical properties differ considerably from conventional concretes and depend on vibropress machines compaction efficiency. Testing full-size masonry elements is expensive and demand a specific infrastructure. Thus, computer modeling based on numerical formulations such as the Finite Element Method (FEM) can become viable and high potential alternatives. This work aims to analyze numerically and experimentally the influence of aggregate type on physical and, mainly, mechanical properties (ultimate strength and secant deformation module in compression) of hollow concrete blocks for structural masonry. Units of three different strengths (6, 12 and 24 MPa) and containing three different aggregate types (basalt, gneiss, and limestone) were tested. From results, it was observed that in less resistant blocks, the mixtures porosity influenced mechanical properties more than aggregate stiffness. As concretes become denser and stronger, this behavior changes. The models implemented and calibrated by the experimental results were satisfactory in reproducing the failure mode of the blocks, secant modulus and compressive strength results.

RESUMO Elementos compostos são estruturas de concreto, ou outros materiais, executados em moldagens distintas que atuam de maneira conjunta sob ações externas. Esses elementos são utilizados quando se pretende aliar as vantagens construtivas de estruturas pré-moldadas ao comportamento monolítico de estruturas moldadas no local. Em situações comuns na engenharia civil, como a construção de uma ponte ou viaduto, a seção pré-moldada é utilizada como cimbramento para a moldagem no local da laje. Esse processo proporciona deformações prévias ao estado-limite último e descontínuas na seção transversal composta. Este trabalho propõem uma metodologia para dimensionamento de seções compostas, em duas etapas de concretagem, avaliando as deformações proporcionadas pelo processo construtivo que pode ser facilmente implementada em rotinas computacionais precisas. Aplicando a metodologia em um exemplo numérico, é observado que a seção concretada em duas etapas apresenta um momento resistente menor que uma seção idêntica concretada em etapa única. Porém são necessárias mais investigações para avaliar a amplitude desta divergência em outros elementos.

ABSTRACT Composite elements are structures of concrete, or other materials, constructed in different casting stages that act jointly under external loads. These elements are used when it is intended to combine the constructive advantages of precast structures with the monolithic behavior of cast-in-place structures. In regular civil engineering applications, such as the construction of a bridge or viaduct, the precast section is used as shoring before casting the slab in place. This process leads to imposed deformations prior to the ultimate limit state and a discontinuity in the specific strain of the composite cross section. This work proposes a methodology to design composite cross sections, built in two casting stages, evaluating the specific strain provided the construction process that can be easily implemented in precise computational routines. From applying the methodology on study-case numerical example, it is observed that the beam casted in two stages presents a factored moment resistance smaller than an identical beam casted in a single stage. However, further investigations should be conducted to assess the extent of this difference.

resumo: A análise de viabilidade de projetos determina se o projeto deve ou não ser colocado em prática e pode ser realizada a partir de diferentes esferas: estratégica, técnica, operacional, legal, econômico-financeira, ambiental, mercadológica, política, fiscal, localização, entre outras. As referidas análises não são excludentes, por conseguinte, é possível que para um único projeto sejam realizadas todas elas. No entanto, este trabalho terá enfoque na análise da viabilidade técnica do projeto inovador de implementação da cura química com CO2 em fábrica de blocos de concreto na região de São Paulo. Para tanto, será apresentada uma visão geral do processo de cura com CO2 e possíveis modificações para realizá-la na indústria, além da identificação de fontes locais de CO2 e custo de entrega, necessidades de mudanças na câmara de cura, aquisição de novos equipamentos, possíveis melhores definições sobre temperatura ideal, umidade e concentração de CO2. Casos de sucesso internacionais são apresentados. O estudo conclui que a tecnologia pode ser facilmente implantada na região, com poucas mudanças no processo produtivo da planta e na câmara de cura. Dependendo da distância da fábrica ao fornecedor de CO2, poderá haver um aumento de 4% a 14% no custo do bloco. Considerando a produção brasileira de blocos de concreto, até 168.780 toneladas de CO2 por ano podem ser sequestradas, este valor equivale ao sequestro de CO2 realizado por 21.100 árvores.

abstract: The project feasibility analysis determines whether the project should be carried out from different spheres: strategic, technical, operational, legal, economic-financial, environmental, marketing, political, fiscal, location, among others. These are not excluding analyzes, all aspects must be assessed before implementing a new project or new process. This work will focus on the analysis of the technical feasibility of the innovative project to implement carbonation curing in a concrete block factory in the region of São Paulo. An overview of the CO2 curing process and changing needs is presented, including identifying local CO2 sources and delivering cost, gas consumption for chamber saturation, estimation of CO2 uptake by masonry units during curing, estimation of consumption and monthly cost of CO2, curing chamber changes needs, new equipment acquisition, estimation of cost for retrofit and new installations, potential best definitions on optimal temperature, humidity, and CO2 concentration. International succeeded cases are presented. The study concludes that the technology can be easily implemented in the region, with few changes on a plant production process and on the curing chamber. There would be an increase of 4% to 14% on the block cost depending on the distance to the CO2 supplier. Considering the Brazilian production of concrete blocks, up to 168,780 tons of CO2 per year can be sequestered, this value is equivalent to the CO2 sequestered by 21,100 trees.

Resumo Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a aderência entre blocos cerâmicos e grautes. Para isso, foram realizados ensaios de push-out e pull-out para avaliar a aderência apresentada por diferentes combinações de cinco tipos de blocos cerâmicos e dois tipos de grautes. Os resultados demonstraram que a geometria da célula dos blocos cerâmicos tem papel preponderante em sua aderência com o graute, pois a extensão da área de contato entre graute e bloco depende da geometria da célula. A retração do graute pode causar a formação de fissuras na interface entre blocos e graute, reduzindo a aderência entre os materiais. A retração formada dentro de cada tipo de bloco pode ser estimada com base no procedimento de ensaio desenvolvido nesta pesquisa e usados em conjunto com as características geométricas das células dos blocos cerâmicos para estimar a carga máxima obtida nos ensaios de push-out. O ensaio desenvolvido para estimar a porcentagem de área de contato perdida devido a retração do graute mostra-se promissor, uma vez que seus resultados foram utilizados na equação para estimar a resistência de união entre blocos e rejuntes e apresentaram boa correlação. No entanto, mais estudos precisam ser feitos porque existem outras variáveis que podem afetar os resultados. Foi demonstrado que é possível utilizar diferentes características de blocos e grautes para aumentar a aderência entre esses materiais e proporcionar um melhor comportamento para estruturas de alvenaria armada. No entanto, conclui-se que se forem usados tipos de bloco com vazado ranhurado, uma superfície de contato maior é produzida e uma aderência parece ser garantida.

Abstract This study aims to evaluate the adherence between clay blocks and grouts. For this purpose, push-out and pull-out tests were performed to assess the adherence presented by different combinations of five types of clay blocks and two types of grouts. The results demonstrated that the geometry of the cells of the clay blocks has a preponderant role in their adherence with grout, as the extent of the contact area between grout and block depends on the geometry of the cell. The shrinkage of the grout can cause the formation of cracks at the interface between block and grout, reducing the adherence between the materials. The shrinkage formed inside each type of block can be estimated based on the testing procedure developed in this research and used in conjunction with the geometric characteristics of the cells of the blocks to estimate the maximum load in the push-out tests. The test procedure developed to estimate the percentage of contact area lost due to grouts shrinkage shows to be promising, since its results were used in the equation to estimate the bond strength between blocks and grouts and shown good correlation. However, more study must be done because there are other variables that can affect the results. These results show that it is possible to use different characteristics of blocks and grouts to increase the adherence between these materials and provide a better behavior for reinforced masonry structures. However, it looks like if block types with a grooved hollow cell are used, a bigger contact surface is produced, and a higher bond strength appears to be assured.

Resumo Pouco se sabe a respeito do comportamento e da durabilidade do sistema de reforço aderido ao substrato de concreto e a possível perda de desempenho frente à degradação dos materiais intervenientes face ao processo natural de envelhecimento das estruturas e, também, devido à exposição dos elementos reforçados externamente a ambientes agressivos. Neste âmbito, o presente trabalho baseia-se na análise experimental do comportamento de vigas de concreto armado reforçadas a flexão com mantas de fibra de carbono (CFRP, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) aplicadas segundo a técnica EBR (Externally Bonded Reinforcement) mantidas em ambiente laboratorial (interno e protegido) e expostas a intempéries (exposição exterior). Para além disso, corpos de provas dos materiais constituintes do sistema de reforço também foram confeccionados e expostos nas mesmas condições ambientais das vigas. Os resultados demonstraram que os adesivos epoxídicos apresentam reduções de até 70% em suas propriedades mecânicas quando expostos às intempéries enquanto o compósito de CFRP permanece com suas propriedades inalteradas após mesma exposição. Para as vigas de concreto armado reforçadas, foi verificado que o sistema de reforço proporciona incrementos de 50 e 28% na capacidade de carga e rigidez dos elementos reforçados, respectivamente. No entanto, os ensaios realizados após 6 meses de exposição às intempéries demonstraram uma redução de 10% no incremento da capacidade de carga dos elementos reforçados.

Abstract Little is known about the behavior and durability of strengthening systems applied on concrete substrata and the possible loss of performance due to the degradation of the intervening materials by the structure’s natural aging process and exposure of the externally strengthened elements to aggressive environments. In this context, the present work presents an experimental analysis of the behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), applied according to the Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) technique, maintained in a laboratory environment (indoor and protected) or exposed to weathering (outdoor exposure). In addition, specimens of the intervenient materials were also molded and exposed to the same environmental conditions as the beams. The results indicate that weather-exposed epoxy adhesives present reductions up to 70% in their mechanical properties after exposure, while the CFRP composite properties remain similar. It was also found that the strengthening system provided 50% and 28% increments in the load-carrying capacity and stiffness of the elements, respectively. However, the tests conducted after 6 months of weathering exposure showed a 10% reduction in the load-carrying capacity of the strengthened elements.

resumo: É de extrema importância que o controle de qualidade de blocos de concreto aplicados na alvenaria estrutural seja realizado com base em procedimentos normalizados que permitam a estimativa das propriedades desses componentes de forma confiável. Este trabalho objetiva analisar e avaliar a influência da umidade do bloco de concreto no resultado do ensaio de compressão. Blocos vazados de concreto simples foram submetidos à processo de retificação e foram posteriormente mantidos em diferentes ambientes, por variados períodos de tempo e sob diferentes condições de temperatura e umidade, de modo a se observar a influência do tipo de secagem sobre a umidade relativa do bloco no momento do ensaio e, consequentemente, sob seu comportamento à compressão. Como conclusão pode-se afirmar que logo após a retificação das face dos blocos, esses apresentam umidade elevada, acima de 70% e, se ensaiados nessa condição, os resultados de resistência a compressão serão menores que os de blocos em condições ambientais usuais. Não foram verificadas diferenças de resistência para as secagens realizadas nos períodos de 24 ou 48 h em ambiente laboratorial. Após a retificação não é necessário colocar os blocos em estufa a 40 °C antes dos ensaios, bastando deixá-los em temperatura e umidade ambiente usuais de 23 °C e 40 ± 5%, respectivamente, durante 24 h. A tentativa de acelerar a secagem em estufa a 100 °C não é adequada pois leva a um aumento da resistência a compressão. A partir dos resultados foi possível determinar expressões para corrigir a resistência a compressão em função da umidade do bloco no momento do ensaio. As expressões de melhor ajuste são distintas para cada tipo de bloco, porém as formulações são consistentes em indicar considerável diferença na resistência em função da umidade.

abstract: It is extremely important that the quality control of the concrete block used in structural masonry is conducted based on standard procedures that allow reliable estimation of the properties of these components. This work aims to analyze and evaluate the influence of the concrete block moisture on the result of the compression test. Hollow concrete blocks were prepared and subsequently maintained in different environments for various periods of time and under different conditions of temperature and humidity to determine the influence of the type of drying on the relative humidity of the block at the time of testing and consequently on its compressive strength. As a conclusion, it can be stated that, because it is necessary to use water in the process, the grinding rectification of the faces of the blocks led them to have high humidity, above 70%. If tested in this condition, the results of the compressive strength tests will be lower than that of blocks under usual environmental conditions. No differences were found in the average block strength when they were kept dry in the controlled environment of the laboratory during periods of 24 or 48 h. After grinding, it is not necessary to dry the blocks inside an oven at 40ºC before the tests; simply leaving them at a usual room temperature of 23ºC and humidity of 40 ± 5% for 24h is sufficient. The attempt to accelerate drying in an oven at 100ºC is not adequate because this leads to an increase in the compressive strength. From the results, it was possible to determine expressions to correlate the compressive strength as a function of the moisture of the block at the time of the test. The best-fit expressions are distinct for each block type, but the formulations are consistent in indicating a considerable difference in resistance as a function of moisture.

Resumo Nas últimas décadas, inúmeros estudos têm sido desenvolvidos a respeito de estruturas de pórticos preenchidos com alvenaria participante, comprovando o aumento de rigidez lateral proporcionado por esta. Neste trabalho, análise foi realizada, baseada em prescrições normativas que adotam o método da barra diagonal equivalente, com o objetivo de comparação aos resultados experimentais de ensaios de pórtico de aço preenchido com alvenaria de blocos de concreto. Duas das três normas técnicas estudadas sugeriram valores de rigidez lateral inferiores aos resultados experimentais, como condição de segurança ao dimensionamento. Sobre as forças de ruptura da alvenaria, os dois procedimentos analisados apresentaram valores próximos de força crítica, embora tenham apontado modos críticos de colapso distintos. O método da barra diagonal equivalente se mostrou uma ferramenta útil e simples para a consideração da alvenaria participante, devendo ser empregado em caso de ações horizontais reduzidas, prévias ao estágio inicial de fissuração do painel.

Abstract In the last decades, several studies have been developed regarding structures composed by frames infilled with masonry walls, proving the increase of lateral stiffness by the infill. In this work, an analysis was carried out, based on design codes which adopt the equivalent diagonal strut method, to compare theoretical results with experimental ones of tests performed on steel frames infilled with concrete block masonry. Two of the three assessed codes specify lateral stiffness smaller than that measured from experimental testing, as safety measures for design. Regarding the masonry ultimate loads, the two specifications analyzed yielded similar values of critical force, although they pointed out different failure modes. The equivalent diagonal strut method has been proved to be a simple and useful tool for considering masonry walls and it should be used in case of reduced horizontal loads, prior to initial cracks of the infill wall.

RESUMO Conhecer as propriedades do concreto é determinante para um dimensionamento seguro e eficiente, sobretudo em um cenário marcado pela adoção de elementos estruturais cada vez mais esbeltos e vãos cada vez maiores. Quando não determinados experimentalmente, os módulos estáticos de deformação dos concretos nacionais são estimados pelas equações contidas na ABNT NBR 6118. Em 2014, tais equações sofreram mudanças significativas. Novos coeficientes foram inseridos e, além da resistência característica à compressão do compósito, a natureza do agregado graúdo passou a ser considerada. Vale, porém, discutir o quão representativos têm sido, na prática, as equações empregadas e os coeficientes atribuídos a cada tipo de rocha. Soma-se a isso o fato de que os módulos de deformação do concreto são influenciados por inúmeros fatores, sendo a resistência à compressão do material apenas um deles. Partindo de uma reunião de resultados experimentais, este trabalho avaliou como os valores do módulo de deformação tangente inicial do concreto (Eci) têm se comportado com o uso de agregados graúdos distintos e provenientes de diferentes regiões do país. A influência dos parâmetros relação água/cimento (A/C), consistência e massa específica da mistura também foi investigada, bem como a afinidade dos resultados obtidos com a versão de 2014 da NBR 6118, com algumas de suas versões anteriores, e códigos estrangeiros. Como resultados, os dois modelos estatísticos obtidos para estimar Eci em função da relação A/C, abatimento, massa específica e resistência à compressão dos concretos aos 28 dias apresentaram precisão entre 70% e 90%. Entre as propriedades abordadas, a massa específica (ρ) foi a que mais influenciou os valores de Eci. Os demais modelos obtidos se mostraram mais conservadores que o os modelos normativos para concretos contendo calcário. Para agregados de granito/gnaisse todos modelos foram equivalentes. Para o basalto, os modelos normativos se apresentaram mais conservadores que os encontrados aqui.

ABSTRACT Knowing the concrete properties is crucial for a safe and efficient design, mainly in a scenario marked by the adoption of increasingly slender elements and increasingly large spans. When not experimentally determined, the static deformation modules of national concretes are estimated by the equations contained in ABNT NBR 6118. In 2014, such equations underwent significant changes. New coefficients were inserted and, in addition to the characteristic resistance to compression of the composite, the nature of the coarse aggregate came to be considered. However, it is worth discussing how representative the equations used and the coefficients attributed to each type of rock have been in practice. Added to this is the fact that the concrete deformation modules are influenced by numerous factors, the compressive strength of the material being only one of them. Starting from a set of experimental results, this work evaluated how the values of the initial tangent deformation modulus of concrete (Eci) have behaved with different coarse aggregates, from different regions in the country. The influence of the parameters water/cement (W/C) ratio, slump, density also have been investigated, as well as the affinity of the results obtained with the current 2014 version of NBR 6118, with some of its previous versions, and foreign codes were also investigated. As results, the two models obtained to estimate Eci as a function of the W/Cratio, slump, density and concrete compressive strength at 28 days showed precision between 70% and 90%. Among the properties addressed, the density (ρ) was the one that most influenced the Eci values. The other models obtained were more conservative than the normative models for concretes containing limestone. For granite/gneiss aggregates all the models were equivalent. For basalt, the normative models were more conservative than those found here.

Resumo Um dos fatores a serem levados em conta no dimensionamento de elementos comprimidos é sua esbeltez. Até hoje no Brasil utiliza-se o conceito de esbeltez simplificado, no qual o comprimento de flambagem é determinado por uma altura efetiva (hef), e o raio de giração é substituído por um parâmetro chamado espessura efetiva (tef), para o cálculo de fator minorador de resistência. Outras normas de alvenaria estrutural, como as norte-americana, europeia e australiana, trazem também em sua formulação de cálculo da capacidade de carga de uma parede comprimida um fator redutor de resistência. Já a normalização canadense indica que seja feita uma análise mais próxima da realidade, considerando o equilíbrio na configuração deformada da parede (análise P-Delta). Um programa experimental que envolveu 18 ensaios de paredes de blocos cerâmicos e de concreto com elevada esbeltez, obtida com a utilização de blocos de pequena espessura, é aqui relatado. As previsões da capacidade de carga para o caso de blocos de concreto de geometria vazada foram próximas aos resultados dos ensaios. No caso dos blocos cerâmicos utilizados, de geometria complexa, com as paredes dos blocos também vazadas, apenas a aproximação da norma canadense permitiu obter com algum grau de segurança e proximidade os resultados dos ensaios. Paredes mais esbeltas e com blocos de geometrias complexas exigem procedimentos mais refinados para o cálculo, em que o processo P-Delta e a verificação da seção com material não resistente à tração podem ser uma solução.

Abstract One of the factors to be taken into account in the design of compression loaded elements is their slenderness. Nowadays, in Brazil, the industry still uses the concept of simplified slenderness ratio - in which the buckling length is determined by an effective height (hef) and the radius of gyration is replaced by a parameter called effective thickness (tef) - when calculating the resistance reduction factor. Other masonry codes, such as the North American, European and Australian, also use the resistance reduction factor in their wall compression load capacity formulation. Yet, the Canadian code indicates the need for a more accurate and realistic analysis of slender walls, considering the balance in the deformed configuration of the wall (P-Delta analysis). This paper reports the findings of an experimental program that tested 18 ceramic and concrete block walls with high slenderness ratios, obtained with thin block dimensions. The predictions of load capacity for the case of hollow concrete blocks were close to the test results. In the case of the ceramic blocks, which had a complex, double-face shell geometry, only the Canadian code approach produced the test results with some degree of certainty and proximity. Slenderer walls and complex geometry blocks require more refined calculation procedures. P-Delta analysis and the verification of the section with brittle-tensile materials solutions may apply.

Resumo O presente trabalho tem por objetivo verificar o comportamento mecânico dos revestimentos cerâmicos frente aos carregamentos na alvenaria estrutural. Neste estudo são apresentados os resultados experimentais e conclusões sobre o comportamento de paredes revestidas quando submetidas a carregamentos verticais crescentes até a ruptura. Os revestimentos foram fixados com argamassa colante industrial, aplicados em paredes de blocos cerâmicos com e sem emboço. Ao longo dos ensaios foram registrados todos os eventos considerados importantes, tais como deformações, início de fissuração, descolamento dos revestimentos, formas e cargas de rupturas. Dessa forma, foi possível quantificar a relação dos carregamentos presentes nas paredes com as fissurações e desprendimentos dos revestimentos cerâmicos, onde se pode verificar que os problemas patológicos ocorreram próximos aos limites de carregamento da estrutura, indicando que o sistema de revestimentos não sofreram relativas alterações visuais e mecânicas dentro do regime estrutural de utilização.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to assess the mechanical behaviour of ceramic tiles on a structural masonry wall submitted to vertical loading. This study presents the results and conclusions of experiments carried out on ceramic block masonry walls coated with ceramic tiles and submitted to increasing vertical loads up to the system's complete failure. The ceramic tiling was applied on the walls using dry set mortars either directly on the blocks or on a plastering mortar layer. During the tests, all the important events, such as strains, onset cracks, tile detaching, rupture shape and load values, were registered. It was possible to determine the relationship between loads and the occurrence of cracks or tile detachment. Cracking or detachment of ceramic tiles only occurred at load values close to each wall's failure load. That indicates that the tiles had good adherence to the wall up to loads much higher than those expected. This indicates that the rendering tyles did not have any visual or mechanical failures when they were on walls under service loads
