RESUMO Objetivo analisar e comparar o desempenho e as estratégias utilizadas por indivíduos controle e pacientes com lesão cerebral unilateral em tarefas de Fluência Verbal fonêmica e semântica. Método A amostra foi composta por 104 participantes, divididos em quatro grupos (26 com lesão no hemisfério esquerdo e afasia - LHEa, 28 com lesão no hemisfério esquerdo e sem afasia - LHEna, 25 com lesão no hemisfério direito - LHD e 25 controles neurologicamente saudáveis). Todos os participantes realizaram tarefas de fluência verbal fonêmica – FVF (com letra “M”) e semântica- FVS (animais) da Bateria Montreal-Toulouse de Avaliação da Linguagem (MTL-BR). Resultados Pacientes do grupo LHEa apresentaram pior desempenho (menos palavras produzidas, menos clusters e switching) nos dois tipos de tarefas de fluência. O grupo LHD mostrou menos produções de switching quando comparado aos controles. O grupo LHEna teve menos produções de palavras que os controles no primeiro bloco de 30 segundos. Conclusão Nossos achados concluem que o grupo LHEa obteve escores mais baixos na maioria das medidas de FVS e FVF quando comparado aos demais grupos.

ABSTRACT Purpose The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the performance and strategies used by control subjects and patients with unilateral brain damage on phonemic and semantic Verbal Fluency tasks. Methods The sample consisted of 104 participants divided into four groups (26 with left hemisphere damage and aphasia- LHDa, 28 with left hemisphere damage and no aphasia- LHDna, 25 with right hemisphere damage- RHD and 25 neurologically healthy control subjects). All participants were administered the phonemic (“M” letter-based) and semantic (animals) verbal fluency tasks from the Montreal-Toulouse Language Assessment Battery (MTL-BR). Results Patients in the LHDa group showed the worst performance (fewer words produced, fewer clusters and switches) in both types of fluency task. RHD group showed fewer switching productions when compared with controls and LHDna had fewer words productions than controls in the first 30 seconds block. Conclusion Our findings suggest that the LHDa group obtained lower scores in most measures of SVF and PVF when compared to the other groups.

RESUMO Dificuldade nas habilidades de alfabetização são frequentemente observadas em crianças com Apraxia da Fala na Infância (AFI). Isso ocorre porque a linguagem oral tem relação direta com a aprendizagem da leitura e da escrita. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho na tarefa de acurácia de uma intervenção integrada de consciência fonoarticulatória, habilidades motoras e letramento de três crianças com AFI. Três meninos com idade entre 5:3 e 5:8 anos, com AFI, receberam 2 horas semanais de sessões de terapia baseadas na alfabetização e habilidades motoras. As crianças foram avaliadas antes e após a terapia e em uma avaliação de manutenção 1 mês após o término do tratamento. As crianças melhoraram na tarefa de precisão, considerando o nível de seus déficits. A melhora foi mantida na avaliação de manutenção. A terapia baseada na alfabetização, considerando a consciência fonológica e as habilidades motoras, pode ajudar as crianças com AFI, mas a gravidade dos problemas de comunicação das crianças deve ser levada em consideração.

ABSTRACT Difficult in literacy skills are often seen in children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). This occurs because oral language has direct relationship with reading and writing learning. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance in the accuracy task of an integrated phonoarticulatory awareness, motor skills and literacy intervention of three children with CAS. Three boys between 5;3 and 5;8 years of age, with CAS, were offered 2 hours per week of therapy sessions based on literacy and motor skills. The children were assessed before and after therapy and at a maintenance assessment 1 month after the treatment ceased. The children improved on the accuracy task considering their deficits level. Improvement was maintained at the maintenance assessment. Therapy based on literacy considering phonoarticulatory awareness and motor skills can help children with CAS, but the severity of the children’s communication problems must be taken into consideration.

RESUMO Objetivo verificar se, por conta da pandemia, os fonoaudiólogos clínicos estavam realizando teleatendimento, se faziam avaliações de fala utilizando o meio virtual e de que modo o faziam, bem como quais instrumentos utilizavam. Métodos a amostra foi composta por 271 fonoaudiólogos clínicos do país. Foi enviado um questionário online com perguntas a respeito da sua formação e atuação profissional, da realização de atendimentos fonoaudiológicos (avaliação, acompanhamento e terapia) e avaliações de fala por meio da telessaúde, isto é, se estavam realizando atendimento e avaliação por esse meio e como o estavam fazendo. Os dados foram analisados descritivamente. Resultados a maioria dos fonoaudiólogos que participaram do estudo estava realizando atendimentos por meio da telessaúde. Porém, apenas um pequeno grupo dos profissionais realizou avaliação da fala nessa modalidade, utilizando, como método de coleta de dados a fala espontânea, figuras para nomeação, instrumentos adaptados para o meio virtual – Teste de Linguagem Infantil (ABFW) e Avaliação Fonológica da Criança (AFC) -, vídeos enviados pelos familiares, entre outros. Ainda, mais da metade dos fonoaudiólogos referiu acreditar que seja viável realizar avaliação da fala por telessaúde. Entretanto, consideraram que a avaliação por esse meio não tem a mesma efetividade que a avaliação presencial. Conclusão a telessaúde, embora pouco difundida no Brasil, apresenta profissionais fonoaudiólogos atuantes na modalidade. Nesse sentido, surge a necessidade de adaptação de instrumentos de avaliação para aplicação virtual, além de aperfeiçoamento da infraestrutura (áudio, vídeo, suporte e rede de internet).

ABSTRACT Purpose to verify if, due to the pandemic, clinical speech therapists perform teleservice, if they carry out speech assessments using the virtual environment and how they are doing it, as well as which instruments they use. Methods the sample consisted of 271 clinical speech therapists in the country. An online questionnaire was sent with questions about their education and professional performance, speech therapy services (assessment, monitoring and therapy) and speech assessments through Telehealth, that is, if they were performing care and assessment through this means and how they were doing it. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results Most speech therapists who participated in the study were providing assistance through Telehealth. However, only a small group of professionals performed speech assessment in this modality, using spontaneous speech as a data collection method, pictures for naming, instruments adapted for the virtual environment – ABFW and AFC, videos sent by family members, among others. Furthermore, more than half of the speech therapists believe that it is feasible to carry out speech assessment using Telehealth. However, they consider that the evaluation by this means does not have the same effectiveness as the face-to-face evaluation. Conclusion Telehealth, although not widespread in Brazil, has speech therapist professionals working in this modality. In this sense, there is a need to adapt assessment instruments for virtual application, in addition to improving the infrastructure (audio, video, support and internet network).

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe and compare the performance of older adults with normal hearing and hearing impairments in mismatch negativity (MMN), correlate MMN with cognitive tasks and central auditory processing (CAP), and identify normal values for MMN in older adults. METHODS: This study had 54 participants. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to assess cognition and the random gap detection test (RGDT), dichotic digit test (DDT), and speech to noise (SN) test were used to evaluate CAP. MMN was elicited with the verbal stimulus /da/ (frequent) and /ta/ (rare), and the latency, amplitude, duration, and area were analyzed. RESULTS: When comparing the normal-hearing group to those with hearing loss, there was no significant difference in MMN. When correlating MMN with MoCA, RGDT, DDT, and the SN test, there was a weak correlation between the MMN amplitude and the RGDT and DDT. When comparing the MMN of participants with normal and altered cognitive aspects and those with normal and altered DDT, the MMN duration was found to be affected by the DDT. The mean latency value of the MMN in the normal-hearing group was 199.8 ms, the amplitude was -2.2 µV, area was 116.1 µV/ms, and duration was 81.2 ms. CONCLUSION: Mild hearing loss did not influence MMN. There was no correlation between MMN and cognitive aspects, and there were weak correlations with CAP. Alterations in CAP led to longer durations in MMN. Normal values for MMN in adults aged between 60 and 77 years were generated.

Abstract Background Evaluating patients in the acute phase of brain damage allows for the early detection of cognitive and linguistic impairments and the implementation of more effective interventions. However, few cross-cultural instruments are available for the bedside assessment of language abilities. The aim of this study was to develop a brief assessment instrument and evaluate its content validity. Methods Stimuli for the new assessment instrument were selected from the M1-Alpha and MTL-BR batteries (Stage 1). Sixty-five images were redesigned and analyzed by non-expert judges (Stage 2). This was followed by the analysis of expert judges (Stage 3), where nine speech pathologists with doctoral training and experience in aphasiology and/or linguistics evaluated the images, words, nonwords, and phrases for inclusion in the instrument. Two pilot studies (Stage 4) were then conducted in order to identify any remaining errors in the instrument and scoring instructions. Results Sixty of the 65 figures examined by the judges achieved inter-rater agreement rates of at least 80%. Modifications were suggested to 22 images, which were therefore reanalyzed by the judges, who reached high levels of inter-rater agreement (AC1 = 0.98 [CI = 0.96–1]). New types of stimuli such as nonwords and irregular words were also inserted in the Brief Battery and favorably evaluated by the expert judges. Optional tasks were also developed for specific diagnostic situations. After the correction of errors detected in Stage 4, the final version of the instrument was obtained. Conclusion This study confirmed the content validity of the Brief MTL-BR Battery. The method used in this investigation was effective and can be used in future studies to develop brief instruments based on preexisting assessment batteries.

RESUMO Objetivo Buscar evidências de validade e fidedignidade da Bateria Montreal de Avaliação da Comunicação Breve (MAC B) para adultos com lesão do hemisfério direito. Método Trezentos e vinte e quatro adultos saudáveis e 26 adultos com lesão cerebral direita, com idades de 19 a 75 anos, com dois ou mais anos de escolaridade, foram avaliados com a Bateria MAC B. Essa bateria contém nove tarefas que visam avaliar habilidades comunicativas, como: discurso prosódia; processo léxico-semântico e pragmática. Duas fontes de evidências de fidedignidade foram utilizadas, ou seja, a consistência interna (alfa de Cronbach) e a concordância entre avaliadores. A validade foi avaliada comparando as tarefas da Bateria MAC na versão expandida e da MAC B. Resultados Em relação à fidedignidade, a consistência interna foi satisfatória e as taxas de concordância entre os avaliadores foram consideradas excelentes, assim como as correlações entre as tarefas da Bateria MAC e Bateria MAC B. Conclusão A Bateria MAC B apresentou evidências de fidedignidade e validade satisfatórias, podendo ser usada como medida para resultado de programas de intervenção, e também auxiliar o fonoaudiólogo a planejar o programa de reabilitação.

ABSTRACT Purpose Search for reliability and validity evidence for the Montreal Communication Evaluation Brief Battery (MEC B) for adults with right brain damage. Methods Three hundred twenty-four healthy adults and 26 adults with right brain damage, aged 19-75 years, with two or more years of education were evaluated with MEC B. The MEC B Battery contains nine tasks that aim to evaluate communicative abilities as discourse, prosody, lexical-semantic and pragmatic process. Two sources of reliability evidence were used: internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and interrater reliability. Construct validity was evaluated comparing the Montreal Communication Evaluation Battery (MEC), expanded version and MEC B tasks. Results Internal consistence was satisfactory and the interrater reliability was considered excellent, as were correlations between MEC Battery and MEC B Battery tasks. Conclusion The MEC B Battery showed satisfactory reliability and validity evidences. It can be used as outcome measure of intervention programs and assist speech therapists to plan rehabilitation programs.

RESUMO Este estudo descreveu o processo de avaliação das bases motoras e de intervenção, conduzido através da hierarquia do tratamento motor da fala em uma pessoa do sexo masculino, de 45 anos, que possui disartria flácida decorrente de acidente vascular encefálico. O paciente recebeu tratamento fonoaudiológico após três anos da lesão cerebral, dividido em 25 sessões semanais, que ocorreram durante oito meses. Foram realizadas avaliações fonoaudiológicas pré e pós terapia, bem como após cada período de tratamento de uma base motora. A terapia obedeceu à hierarquia do tratamento motor da fala, iniciando pela reabilitação da respiração, ressonância e prosódia, seguindo para terapia da fonação e, por último, ajustes da articulação. O paciente apresentou aperfeiçoamento em todas as bases motoras, adquirindo adequado suporte respiratório e ressonância durante a fala, melhorias na prosódia e precisão articulatória e mais estabilidade vocal. Além disso, quanto à autopercepção do paciente, em relação aos progressos terapêuticos, este relatou diminuição dos impactos da disartria na sua qualidade de vida. Sendo assim, foram evidenciados os benefícios do tratamento fonoaudiológico na disartria, principalmente ao seguir a estrutura proposta pela hierarquia do tratamento motor da fala. Os resultados permitiram concluir que uma adequada abordagem terapêutica pode proporcionar ganhos, mesmo alguns anos após a lesão cerebral.

ABSTRACT This study described the motor speech bases assessment and therapeutic process conducted through the hierarchy of motor speech treatment in a 45-year-old person, male, that has flaccid dysarthria caused by stroke. This patient received speech-language therapy after three years since the brain lesion, during 25 weekly sessions that occurred in 8 months. Speech-language assessments were applied before and after therapy, as well as a specific evaluation after each base motor treatment. Therapy obeyed the hierarchy of motor speech treatment, initiating with respiratory and resonance rehabilitation, following by prosodic therapy, phonatory treatment and, lately, articulatory treatment. The patient showed improvements in all motor speech bases, acquiring adequacy in respiratory support and resonance during the speech, improvements in prosody, more articulatory precision, and vocal stability. Beyond that, about patient self-perception about therapeutic progressions, he related reduction of the dysarthria impacts in his life quality. In this way, the benefits of speech-language therapy in dysarthria had been evidenced, mainly at following the proposal of the hierarchy of motor speech treatment structure. Results allowed us to conclude that an appropriate therapeutic approach may offer benefits even years after cerebral lesion.

RESUMO Introdução Por meio da intervenção fonoaudiológica, é possível diminuir os sintomas da afasia. Objetivos Verificar os métodos de intervenção fonoaudiológica na afasia expressiva. Estratégia de pesquisa Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura. Realizou-se a busca nas bases SciELO, PubMed e PsycINFO, no período de fevereiro a abril de 2018. Para as bases de dados PubMed e PsycINFO foram estabelecidos os descritores em inglês “non-fluent aphasia”, OR “broca” OR “transcortical motor aphasia” OR “motor aphasia” OR “amnestic aphasia” OR “semantic aphasia” OR “dymanic aphasia” OR “anomi*” AND “intervention” OR “therapy” OR “rehabilitation” OR “treatment”. Para base SciELO, apenas o descritor “aphasia”. Critérios de seleção Artigos publicados nos últimos dez anos (de 2009 a 2018) em português, inglês ou espanhol foram incluídos, sendo ou não de periódicos de acesso livre, além de estudos com indivíduos com idade superior a 19 anos. Foram excluídos artigos não relacionados à terapia tradicional, estudos que não apresentassem indivíduos com afasia expressiva e aqueles que tratavam de distúrbios motores de fala, como disartria e apraxia pura. Estudos de revisão de literatura e que envolvessem participantes bilíngues também foram excluídos. Resultados Um total de 174 artigos foram encontrados. Após análise e aplicação dos critérios de seleção estabelecidos, foram selecionados 32 artigos completos. Entre as terapias tradicionais encontradas, observaram-se: terapia de recuperação de palavras, terapia melódica e terapia conversacional. Conclusão A terapia de recuperação de palavras foi o método tradicional mais utilizado.

ABSTRACT Introduction Aphasia symptoms can be improved via speech and language therapy. Purpose To analyze speech-language intervention methods in expressive aphasia. Research strategy An integrative review of the literature was performed using SciELO, PubMed and PsycINFO databases, from February to April 2018. The following search terms: “non-fluent aphasia”, OR “broca” OR “transcortical motor aphasia” OR “motor aphasia” OR “amnestic aphasia” OR “semantic aphasia” OR “dymanic aphasia” OR “anomi*” AND “intervention” OR “therapy” OR “rehabilitation” OR “treatment” were used for PubMed and PsycINFO databases. In SciELO database, only the search term “aphasia” was used. Selection criteria Articles published in the last ten years (from 2009 to 2018) in Portuguese, English or Spanish, whether or not they were open access journals. Studies with participants older than 19 years were selected. Articles not related to traditional therapy were excluded, as well as those which did not present participants with expressive aphasia and those which treated speech motor disorders such as pure dysarthria and pure apraxia. Literature review studies and studies involving bilingual participants were also excluded. Results One hundred and seventy-four articles were found. After analysis and application of the established selection criteria, 32 complete articles were selected. Word retrieval therapy, melodic intonation therapy and conversation therapy were the traditional methods found in this study. Conclusion Word retrieval therapy was the method most commonly used.

RESUMO Verificar o efeito da terapia de recuperação de palavras em um indivíduo com afasia expressiva. Participante, 47 anos, 8 anos de escolaridade, com queixa de expressão após dois AVCs isquêmicos no hemisfério cerebral esquerdo. Foi aplicado pré e pós-terapia a Bateria Montreal-Toulouse de Avaliação da Linguagem (MTL-BR), o Instrumento de Avaliação NeuropsicológicaBreve adaptada- (NEUPSILIN-Af), Mini Exame do Estado Mental (MEEM) e Escala de Avaliação Funcional das Habilidades de Comunicação (ASHA-FACS). Foi realizada uma sondagem com 50 palavras, 25 substantivos e 25 verbos para obter dados referentes a nomeação. As sessões ocorreram duas vezes por semana, durante 50 minutos. Nas sessões trabalhou-se com um conjunto de 25 imagens de substantivos e verbos, de forma oral e escrita durante seis sessões cada categoria. Nas três sessões finais, 10 figuras de substantivos e 10 de verbos foram inseridas em sentenças. Na pós-terapia, a sondagem demonstrou aumento do vocabulário em substantivos e verbos. Na Bateria MTL-BR houve melhoras em diferentes tarefas assim como no NEUPSILIN-Af. No ASHA-FACS foram relatadas melhoras nos aspectos de comunicação social e planejamento diário. Conclui-se que a terapia de recuperação de palavras foi efetiva pois houve ampliação do vocabulário e melhora em diversos aspectos linguísticos, comunicativos e cognitivos.

ABSTRACT To verify the effect of word retrieval therapy on a patient with expressive aphasia. A forty-seven year-old, male, with 8 years of schooling, with complaints about not saying words after two ischemic stroke on the left hemisphere, participated in this study. The Montreal-Toulouse-Language Assessment Battery (MTL-BR), Brief Neuropsychological Assessment Instrument (NEUPSILIN-Af), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Functional Assessment Communication Skills scale (ASHA-FACS) were used pre- and post-therapy. A baseline test with 50 words, 25 nouns and 25 verbs was applied to obtain data regarding naming ability. The sessions occurred twice a week, for 50 minutes. The intervention was based on a set of 25 images of nouns and verbs, in oral and written modalities during six sessions, for each category. On the three final sessions, 10 figures of nouns and 10 figures of verbs were added in sentences. In the post-therapy, the final baseline showed an increase in vocabulary of nouns and verbs. In the pos-intervention evaluation, the patient had an improvement in some tasks of MTL-BR battery, NEUPSILIN-Af tasks. Improvement in the social communication and daily planning aspects were reported in the ASHA-FACS. In conclusion, the word retrieval therapy was effective in this case, because there was an increase of the vocabulary and improvement in several linguistic, communicative and cognitive aspects.

RESUMO Objetivo Propor um protocolo para avaliação instrumental da fala de adultos, considerando critérios linguísticos e psicométricos. Método A escolha das palavras para compor o protocolo foi baseada em critérios linguísticos do Português Brasileiro (PB), previamente definidos, após busca no banco de dados do Portal da Língua Portuguesa, utilizando o Vocabulário Ortográfico Português (VOP). Os critérios definidos foram em relação à classe gramatical, ao contexto vocálico, ao número de sílabas, à tonicidade e à presença das palavras no cotidiano dos adultos brasileiros. A escolha das figuras para representarem as palavras levou em consideração os critérios de imageabilidade, clareza da figura e aspectos culturais da imagem. Resultados O instrumento foi composto por 19 palavras/figuras, prevalecendo substantivos em relação aos adjetivos, cada palavra contemplando um fonema-alvo na posição de Onset Medial, no contexto vocálico seguinte e precedente à vogal [a], trissílabas e paroxítonas. As palavras e figuras passaram por criteriosa avaliação de 13 juízes não especialistas e 6 juízes especialistas. Após a fase de apreciação pelos juízes, as palavras foram testadas em adultos mediante avaliação instrumental. Os adultos que realizaram as avaliações instrumentais conseguiram produzir a lista de palavras espontaneamente, e os dados obtidos através das avaliações possibilitaram adequada análise. Conclusão Este estudo forneceu informações a respeito de critérios psicométricos e linguísticos, e disponibilizou um protocolo para avaliação instrumental de fala para adultos.

ABSTRACT Objective Propose a protocol for instrumental assessment of adult speech considering psychometric and linguistic criteria. Methods The choice of words was based on previously defined Brazilian Portuguese linguistic criteria after a search on the “Portal da Língua Portuguesa” database using the Portuguese Orthographic Vocabulary (VOP). The defined linguistic criteria considered grammatical class, vowel context, number of syllables, stress, and presence of words in the daily life of Brazilian adults. The choice of the images to represent the words considered the criteria of imageability, clearness, and cultural aspects. The words and images were rigorously evaluated by 13 non-specialist judges and six specialist judges. After being examined by the judges, the words were tested in adults through instrumental assessment. Results The protocol was composed of 19 words and images, with prevalence of nouns over adjectives. Each word included one target sound in Onset Medial position, in the context precedent and following the vowel [a], trisyllabic and paroxytone words. The adults that attended the instrumental assessments succeeded in producing the list of words spontaneously. The data obtained through the assessments provided adequate analysis. Conclusion This study provided additional information on psychometric and linguistic criteria in addition to providing a protocol for instrumental assessment of adult speech.

RESUMO Objetivo Comparar o desempenho das crianças com aquisição de fala típica, desvio fonológico e com apraxia de fala na infância nas variáveis precisão de produção e consistência do instrumento “Avaliação dinâmica das habilidades motoras da fala” (DEMSS-BR). Método A amostra foi constituída por 18 crianças com idades entre 4 anos e 6 meses a 5 anos e 8 meses, de ambos os gêneros, divididas em três grupos: seis com aquisição típica de fala, seis com desvio fonológico e seis com apraxia de fala na infância. Todas foram avaliadas por meio do instrumento DEMSS-BR, e o desempenho foi observado a partir da análise das variáveis de precisão da produção e consistência da fala. Para comparação do desempenho entre grupos utilizou-se o teste U de Mann-Whitney. Resultados O grupo com apraxia de fala na infância apresentou desempenho inferior nas variáveis de precisão da produção e consistência da fala quando comparado aos demais grupos. Conclusão O grupo com apraxia de fala na infância apresentou pior desempenho no DEMSS-BR quando comparado aos de crianças típicas e com desvio fonológico. Desta forma, foi possível constatar que o DEMSS-BR auxilia no diagnóstico diferencial de crianças com distúrbios dos sons da fala.

ABSTRACT Purpose To compare performance between children with typical speech acquisition, phonological disorders, and childhood apraxia of speech for the variables overall articulatory accuracy and consistency of the Dynamic Evaluation of Motor Speech Skill - Brazilian Portuguese version (DEMSS-BR). Methods Study participants were 18 children of both genders aged 4 years and 6 months to 5 years and 8 months. The sample was divided into three groups: six children with typical speech acquisition (TSA), six children with phonological disorder (PD), and six individuals with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). All participants were submitted to the DEMSS-BR and had their subscores of speech accuracy and consistency measured. Performance comparison between the groups was statistically evaluated using the Mann-Whitney U Test. Results Participants in the group with CAS presented poorer performance for the variables overall articulatory accuracy and consistency compared with those of participants in the other two groups. Conclusion The group of children with childhood apraxia of speech presented poorer performance on the DEMSS-BR compared with those of the groups with typical speech acquisition and phonological disorders. The study demonstrated that the DEMSS-BR assists with differential diagnosis of children with speech sound disorders.

RESUMO Este estudo tem como objetivo verificar os efeitos da terapia fonoaudiológica com enfoque na consciência fonológica e fonoarticulatória nas habilidades de fala e no processo de alfabetização de crianças com distúrbios dos sons da fala. Participaram deste estudo sete crianças com idade entre seis e sete anos, de ambos os gêneros e com queixa de alterações na fala. As crianças foram submetidas às seguintes avaliações fonoaudiológicas: Avaliação Fonológica da Criança, Exame Articulatório, Avaliação Consciência Fonoarticulatória, Prova de Consciência Fonológica Por Produção Oral e Avaliação da Escrita de Palavras. Em seguida, foram submetidas à terapia fonoaudiológica por meio do software “Pedro em uma noite assustadora”, semanalmente, com duração de aproximadamente 30 minutos cada. Ao final de oito sessões as crianças foram reavaliadas com os mesmos instrumentos utilizados na avaliação inicial. Os dados foram analisados qualitativa e quantitativamente. A partir da análise dos dados obtidos, constatou-se melhora na fala, nas habilidades de consciência fonoarticulatória e de consciência fonológica e da Hipótese de Escrita de todas as crianças. Pode-se concluir que a terapia fonoaudiológica com enfoque nas habilidades de consciência fonológica e fonoarticulatórias, a partir de software especifico, influenciou a organização dos padrões de fala e aquisição da linguagem escrita na maioria dos sujeitos.

ABSTRACT To verify the effects of Speech Therapy focusing on phonological awareness and articulatory awareness in speech skills and in the literacy process of children with speech sound disorders. Seven children, aged between six and seven years old, male and female, and with speech disorders complaints participated in this study. These children were submitted to the following speech and language assessments: Children Phonological Assessment, Articulation Test, Articulatory Awareness Assessment, Phonological Awareness Testing by Oral Production and Word Writing Evaluation. Afterwards, they underwent speech and language therapy through the software “Pedro em uma noite assustadora”. The sessions took place once a week, lasting approximately 30 minutes each. At the end of eight sessions, the children were reassessed with the same instruments used in the initial assessment. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Based on the analysis of data obtained, improvement in speech, articulatory awareness and phonological awareness skills, and Spelling Hypothesis of all children was observed. It can be concluded that speech therapy focusing on phonological awareness and articulatory awareness skills based on specific software has influenced the organization of speech patterns and acquisition of written language in most subjects.

RESUMO Objetivo: comparar o julgamento perceptual por fonoaudiólogos(as) e leigos(as) quanto à inteligibilidade da fala de crianças com desvio fonológico, e verificar a concordância deste julgamento com a gravidade do desvio fonológico. Métodos: a pesquisa foi composta por duas amostras: julgada e julgadora. A amostra julgada foi constituída por 30 crianças do banco de dados da clínica fonoaudiológica da instituição, com diagnóstico de desvio fonológico, na faixa etária de 4 anos e 1 mês a 7 anos e 11 meses (20 do gênero masculino e 10 do feminino). A amostra julgadora, foi composta por seis leigos, que não possuíam qualquer contato com crianças, sendo três do gênero masculino e três do feminino; e seis fonoaudiólogos, sendo três do gênero masculino e três do feminino. Resultados: o julgamento da inteligibilidade por leigos(as) é mais prejudicado do que a inteligibilidade por fonoaudiólogos(as), pois estes possuem formação técnica para entender a fala do outro, julgando melhor a fala da criança. Leigos e leigas concordam de forma semelhante em relação à gravidade do desvio fonológico, diferentemente do grupo de fonoaudiólogos x fonoaudiólogas, onde as fonoaudiólogas julgam e concordam melhor quanto à inteligibilidade e a gravidade do desvio fonológico. Conclusão: profissionais fonoaudiólogos(as) julgam de forma mais adequada a inteligibilidade da fala de crianças com desvio fonológico; as fonoaudiólogas possuem melhor percepção para julgar a gravidade do desvio quando comparadas aos grupos de leigos e leigas, demonstrando haver necessidade de informações a este último sobre o tema.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare the perceptual judgment of the speech intelligibility of children with speech sound disorders by speech language pathologists (men x women) and non-professionals (men x women) and to verify the agreement of the perceptual judgment with the results of the Percentage of Consonants Correct - Revised. Methods: this research consisted of two samples: the judged and the judging. The judged sample was composed by 30 children from the Database of a clinical speech therapy, diagnosed with speech sound disorders, ages between 4:7 and 7: 11 years old (20 males and 10 females). The judging sample was composed by six speech pathologists (three males and three females) and six non-professionals (people that did not have any contact with any child), three males and three females. Results: the judgment of intelligibility of the nonprofessionals is impaired when comparing with the intelligibility of speech language pathologists, because they have technical background in order to understand the speech of others, better judging the speech of children. Nonprofessionals agree in the same way about the severity of phonological disorder, differently of speech language pathologists, where female speech pathologists judge and agree better in the relationship of intelligibility and gravity of phonological disorder. Conclusion: Speech Language Pathologists have greater effectiveness to judge the speech intelligibility of children that have speech sound disorders, female speech pathologists have better insight to judge the severity of speech disorders compared to the nonprofessional group, which demonstrates that more information about speech is needed.

Los pacientes con lesión cerebrovascular de hemisferio derecho (LHD) tienden a presentar déficits comunicativos. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar el procesamiento comunicativo de pacientes con accidente cerebrovascular (ACV) de hemisferio derecho. La muestra incluyó 100 participantes: 25 con LHD, 25 con ACV de hemisferio izquierdo (LHI) y 50 controles neurológicamente preservados (CNP). Los participantes respondieron a un cuestionario sociodemográfico, el Mini Examen del Estado Mental para medir la capacidad cognitiva general; la Escala de Depresión Geriátrica y la Escala Beck de Depresión, para investigar los síntomas depresivos; el Test de Marcación de Campanas, para evaluar heminegligencia, y la Escala de Rankin Modificada, para verificar la capacidad funcional. El procesamiento comunicativo fue evaluado con la Batería Montreal de Evaluación de la Comunicación, versión abreviada - Batería MAC Abreviada. Las puntuaciones fueron comparadas por ANOVA de una vía y Chi-cuadrado. Hubo diferencias significativas entre los grupos LHD y CNP en 89% de las tareas, pero no entre los grupos LHD y LHI. Además, el grupo LHD presentó un desempeño comunicativo inferior al grupo CNP. Tales descubrimientos sugieren evidencias de cooperación interhemisférica para los procesamientos comunicativos.

Patients with right hemisphere brain damage (RBD) usually experience communication impairments. This study aims to investigate the communication processing in patients who suffered a stroke in the right hemisphere. The sample comprised 100 participants: 25 with RBD, 25 with left hemisphere brain damage (LBD) and 50 neurologically healthy controls (NHC). Participants answered a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Mini Mental State Examination to measure general cognitive ability, the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Beck Depression Scale to investigate depressive symptoms, the Bells Test to evaluate hemineglect and the Modified Ranking Scale to verify functional capacity. The communication processing was assessed with the use of the Montreal Communication Evaluation Battery, brief version - Brief MAC Battery. The scores were compared using a One-Way ANOVA and the Chi-squared test. There were significant differences between RBD and NHC groups in 89% of the tasks, but not between RBD and LBD groups. Furthermore, the RBD showed inferior communication skills compared to the NHC group. These findings indicate an interhemispheric cooperation for communication processing.

Pacientes com lesão cerebrovascular de hemisfério direito (LHD) tendem a apresentar déficits comunicativos. Este estudo visou a investigar o processamento comunicativo de pacientes com acidente vascular cerebral (AVC) de hemisfério direito. A amostra incluiu 100 participantes: 25 com LHD, 25 com AVC de hemisfério esquerdo (LHE) e 50 controles neurologicamente preservados (PNP). Os participantes responderam a um questionário de dados sociodemográficos, ao Mini Exame do Estado Mental para avaliar capacidade cognitiva geral, à Escala de Depressão Geriátrica de 15 pontos e à Escala Beck de Depressão para investigar sintomas depressivos, ao Teste dos Sinos para avaliar heminegligência, e à Escala Rankin Modificada para verificar capacidade funcional. O processamento comunicativo foi avaliado com a Bateria Montreal de Avaliação da Comunicação, versão abreviada - Bateria MAC Breve. Os escores foram comparados por One-Way ANOVA e Qui-quadrado. Houve diferenças significativas entre os grupos LHD e PNP em 89% das tarefas, mas não entre os grupos LHD e LHE. Além disso, o grupo LHD apresentou desempenho comunicativo inferior ao grupo PNP. Tais achados sugerem evidências de cooperação interhemisférica para os processamentos comunicativos.

RESUMO Objetivos: Verificar o efeito das variáveis idade e escolaridade no desempenho de adultos saudáveis na Bateria Montreal de Avaliação da Comunicação, versão portuguesa (MAC-PT). Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 90 indivíduos portugueses, falantes do Portugês Europeu, distribuídos em 9 grupos de acordo com a escolaridade (4 a 9; 10 a 13; e mais de 13 anos de ensino formal) e com a idade (19 a 40; 41 a 64; e 65 a 80 anos). Para análise de comparação entre grupos, utilizou-se o testetwo-way ANOVA, com post-hoc Bonferroni (p≤0,05). Resultados: Verificou-se que o desempenho dos indivíduos foi influenciado pela variável idade nas tarefas pragmático-inferencial, discursiva e prosódica. Já a escolaridade influenciou o desempenho em todos os processamentos avaliados pela MAC-PT. Conclusão: As variáveis idade e escolaridade influenciaram o desempenho comunicativo e devem ser consideradas no processo de avaliação de pacientes neurológicos.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To verify age and education effects on communication performance of healthy adults in the Montreal Communication Evaluation Battery, Portuguese version (MAC-PT). Methods: The sample comprised 90 healthy adults from Portugal, European Portuguese speakers, divided into nine groups according to educational level (4-9, 10-13, and >13 years of formal schooling) and age (19-40, 41-64, and 65-80 years). The influence of age and education was assessed by comparing mean scores between groups, using a two-way analysis of variance followed by Bonferroni post hoc tests (p ≤0.05). Results: The results showed that participants' performance was influenced by age in pragmatic-inferential, discursive, and prosodic tasks. Education had the greatest influence on the performance in all processes evaluated by the MAC-PT. Conclusion: Age and education seem to influence the communicative performance and should be considered in the assessment of neurological patients.
