Resumo A utilização de experimentos é uma das formas mais eficientes para o ensino de física, uma vez que os alunos tornam-se mais motivados quando conceitos teóricos fundamentais são associados a aplicações tecnológicas. O desenvolvimento de carros, aeronaves e foguetes, por exemplo, requer o conhecimento detalhado dos escoamentos de fluidos ao redor e no interior desses veículos. O presente artigo descreve os fundamentos da óptica geométrica em meios heterogêneos e apresenta as técnicas ópticas shadowgraph e schlieren que são amplamente utilizadas em centros de pesquisa, universidades e empresas no estudo da aerodinâmica e dos escoamentos em geral. Esses métodos ópticos são baseados na deflexão dos raios de luz causada por variações na massa específica do escoamento. O método schlieren-Toepler é apresentado e discutido em detalhes, derivando-se equações para o contraste, sensibilidade e o alinhamento óptico. Uma implementação do método shadowgraph direto para uso em sala de aula é demonstrada e, ao longo do artigo, são apresentadas diversas imagens obtidas pelos métodos ópticos descritos.

Abstract The use of experiments is one of the most efficient ways to teach physics, since students become more motivated when fundamental theoretical concepts are associated with technological applications. The development of cars, aircraft and rockets, for example, requires detailed knowledge of the flow of fluids around and inside these vehicles. This article describes the fundamentals of geometric optics in heterogeneous media and presents the shadowgraph and schlieren optical techniques that are widely used in research centers, universities and companies in the study of aerodynamics and flows in general. These optical methods are based on the deflection of the light rays caused by variations in the flow density. The schlieren-Toepler method is discussed in detail, deriving equations for contrast, sensitivity and optical alignment. An implementation of the direct shadowgraph method for classroom use is demonstrated and, throughout the article, several images obtained by the described optical methods are presented.

Resumo O presente estudo consiste na caracterização e na seleção de descritores morfoagronômicos mínimos em genótipos de Passiflora cincinnata in situ. Foram utilizados 41 descritores morfoagronômicos quantitativos, divididos em “Planta e Folha”, “Floral” e “Fruto”. Utilizou-se a análise de componentes principais com o objetivo de eliminar descritores que tivessem menor importância no estudo de dissimilaridade multivariada entre genótipos. Foi realizada a formação de grupos por meio do método de agrupamento hierárquico de Ward. Foi estimada a importância dos caracteres por meio da participação dos componentes pelo método de Singh (1981), com o intuito de verificar a similaridade entre variáveis de menor participação dos componentes. Para o grupo de descritores “Planta e Folha”, as características que apresentaram as maiores contribuições relativas foram: largura máxima da folha (76,1%) e comprimento da lâmina foliar (17,2%). Para o grupo de descritores “Floral”, as características que apresentaram as maiores contribuições relativas foram: comprimento do pedicelo (42,1%), diâmetro da ponta da corona (32,6%) e comprimento da pétala (11,8%). Para o grupo de descritores “Fruto”, a característica que apresentou a maior contribuição relativa foi: número de sementes por fruto (89,2%). A partir dos resultados obtidos, pode-se inferir que, dos 41 descritores, apenas 15 se mostraram relevantes para a avaliação da diversidade genética entre os indivíduos da população. Estes descritores foram: acidez titulável, comprimento da bráctea, comprimento da lâmina foliar, comprimento da pétala, comprimento da sépala, comprimento do pedicelo, comprimento dos anéis dos filamentos corona, diâmetro da ponta da corona, diâmetro longitudinal do fruto, largura da sépala, largura máxima da folha, número de frutos, número de sementes por fruto, peso da casca e massa do fruto.

Abstract The present study consists of the in situ characterization and selection of minimal morphoagronomic descriptors in Passiflora cincinnata genotypes. Forty-one quantitative morphoagronomic descriptors were used, divided in “Plant and Leaf”, “Floral” and “Fruit”. Principal component analysis were used to eliminate descriptors that were less important in the study of multivariate dissimilarity among genotypes. The formation of groups was carried out using Ward’s hierarchical grouping method. The importance of the characters was estimated through the participation of the components by Singh’s method (1981) in order to verify the similarity between lower participation variables in the components. For the set of descriptors “Plant and Leaf” the characteristics that presented the greatest relative contributions were: maximum leaf width 76.1% and leaf blade length 17.2%. For the set of descriptors “Floral” the characteristics that presented the greatest relative contributions were: pedicel length 42.1%, corona tip diameter 32.6% and petal length 11.8%. For the set of descriptors “Fruit” the characteristic that presented the greatest relative contribution was: number of seeds per fruit 89.2%. From the results obtained, we can infer that from the 41 descriptors, only 15 were relevant for the evaluation of the genetic diversity among the individuals of the population. These descriptors were: titratable acidity, bract length, leaf blade length, petal length, sepal length, pedicel length, corona filament ring length, corona tip diameter, fruit longitudinal diameter, sepal width, maximum leaf width, number of fruits, number of seeds per fruit, bark weight and fruit mass.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos genéticos aditivos e não aditivos sobre a eficiência de uso de P e a responsividade ao nutriente em linhagens de milho. Nove linhagens contrastantes - eficientes ou não quanto ao uso de P - foram avaliadas em cruzamentos dialélicos, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, por dois anos, sob dois níveis de disponibilidade do nutriente em Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro distrófico. As linhagens L3 e L228-3 apresentaram os maiores efeitos médios da capacidade geral de combinação (CGC, ), o que é indício de eficiência, na ausência de P, e de responsividade, na presença. Os cruzamentos L51502020 x L22 e L36 x L56.800.84 apresentaram os maiores efeitos médios da capacidade específica de combinação (CEC, ), na presença e na ausência de P, respectivamente. Os componentes quadráticos para CGC foram superiores aos da CEC, na ausência de P, e inferiores, na presença, o que mostra que os efeitos aditivos predominaram na eficiência de uso, e os não aditivos, na responsividade ao nutriente. A capacidade combinatória dos genótipos interagiu com os ambientes; portanto, a seleção do melhor progenitor e da melhor combinação híbrida deve ser realizada para ambiente específico. As linhagens apresentam complementariedade gênica quanto à eficiência de uso de P.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate additive and nonadditive genetic effects on responsiveness and the P use efficiency by maize lines. Nine contrasting inbred lines - efficient or not regarding their P use efficiency - were evaluated in diallel crosses, in a randomized complete block design, for two years, under two availability levels of the nutrient in an Oxisol. The lines L3 and L228-3 showed the highest average effects for general combining ability (GCA, ), indicating use efficiency in the absence of P, and responsiveness, in the presence. The crosses L51502020 x L22 and L36 x L56.800.84 had the highest average effects for specific combining ability (SCA, ) in the presence and in the absence of P, respectively. The quadratic components for GCA were higher than those of SCA, in the absence of P, and lower in the presence, showing that the additive effects predominated in P use efficiency, and the nonadditive ones predominated in the plant responsiveness to the nutrient. The genotype combining ability interacted with the environments; therefore, the selection of the best parent and of the best hybrid combination should be done in specific environments. The inbred lines show genic complementary action regarding P use efficiency.

RESUMO: Foram avaliados o efeito do ácido salicílico (AS) no controle do Cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV), vírus que induz o endurecimento dos frutos do maracujazeiro (EFM), e a sua influência na expressão dos sintomas e na ativação das enzimas peroxidase e polifenoloxidase. O experimento foi delineado e conduzido de forma inteiramente casualizada. Os tratamentos consistiram em AS (2,5 mM) e controle (etanol 10%), aplicados 12 horas antes da inoculação mecânica do CABMV, agente causal do EFM no Brasil. Um experimento similar foi conduzido sob as mesmas condições, porém, quatro aplicações do AS foram realizadas semanalmente após a inoculação mecânica do CABMV. Em ambos os experimentos a avaliação da severidade da doença foi realizada empregando escala de notas que variaram de 0 a 3. Para avaliar a atividade das enzimas peroxidase e polifenoloxidase, as plantas foram tratadas (AS e controle) e, após 12 horas, inoculadas com o isolado de CABMV. Foram realizadas amostragens foliares 0, 12, 24 e 48 horas após os tratamentos (HAT), que foram processadas e analisadas em espectrofotômetro para a constatação da ativação da peroxidase e polifenoloxidase. Aos 30 dias após a inoculação (DAI), o AS aplicado uma única vez promoveu redução da severidade de 57,1%, quando comparado com o controle. Nas plantas submetidas às aplicações semanais de AS foi constatada a redução significativa da expressão dos sintomas aos 45 DAI. Nos ensaios bioquímicos foi observado aumento significativo de peroxidase nos intervalos de 12 horas (DAI)/24 horas (HAT). Para polifenoloxidase foi observado um aumento significativo de sua atividade nos intervalos de 24 horas (DAI)/48 horas (HAT). Sugere-se que o AS pode representar uma ferramenta adicional no manejo do EFM.

ABSTRACT: The effect of salicylic acid (SA) was evaluated in control of Cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus (CABMV), which induces hardening of the fruits of passion fruit (EFM). Also, its influence on the expression of symptoms and the activation of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidases were evaluated. The experiment was designed and conducted in a completely random way. The treatments consisted of SA (2.5 mM) and control (10% ethanol), applied 12 hours before mechanical inoculation of CABMV, the causal agent of EFM in Brazil. A similar experiment was conducted under the same conditions, but four applications were performed weekly after CABMV mechanical inoculation. In both experiments a rating scale ranging from 0 to 3 was used to assess the severity of the disease. To evaluate the activity of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase, the plants were treated (SA and control) and, after 12 hours, inoculated with isolated CABMV. Leaf samplings were performed at 0, 12, 24 and 48 hours after the treatments (HAT), processed and analyzed in a spectrophotometer to verify the activation of peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase. At 30 days after inoculation (DAI), the SA applied once promoted reduction of 57.1% of the severity, when compared with the control. In plants subjected to SA weekly applications, it was found a significantly reduction in the expression of symptoms at 45 DAI. In the biochemical assays, a significant increase in peroxidase in 12-hour intervals (DAI)/24 hours (HAT) was observed. For polyphenol oxidase, a significant increase of its activity was observed at 24 hour intervals (DAI)/48 hours (HAT). It is suggested that SA may represent an additional tool in the management of EFM.

ABSTRACT: Scientists at the laboratory of Força Aérea Brasileira (FAB) have demonstrated experimentally that laser-induced "air spikes" (DEAS) may reduce effectively both total vehicle drag and heating at hypervelocities. Now, we apply the Rayleigh flow to directly determine the degree of reduction in vehicle drag and convective heat flux into the airframe of a hypersonic blunt-body when laser energy is added upstream of the flight path. Our numerical findings are in accordance with the physical trends observed in our previous hypersonic laser-induced DEAS experiments.

O rápido avanço das pesquisas científicas tem possibilitado que novos conhecimentos sejam assimilados, e que antigas teorias e hipóteses reformuladas. É inquestionável a importância dos livros didáticos enquanto objeto pedagógico na formação do cidadão. Por conta disso, torna-se imprescindível que estes sejam constantemente reavaliados, no que tange a seu conteúdo. No presente estudo, foram avaliadas as diferentes formas pelas quais os livros didáticos de Biologia abordam o tema biodiversidade. Para realizar esta pesquisa, foram utilizados livros didáticos, os quais fazem parte do catálogo do Programa Nacional do Livro do Ensino Médio (PNLEM). Observamos que alguns tópicos relacionados ao estudo da biodiversidade são apresentados de maneira superficial e, por vezes, equivocada. Também ficou evidente que os livros didáticos analisados neste estudo tratam de um mesmo assunto com abordagem e profundidade diferentes. Isto sugere que adoção de um único livro didático nas escolas pode comprometer o processo de aprendizado do aluno.

The rapid advancement of scientific research has been enabled by new knowledge being assimilated and by the reformulation of old theories and hypotheses. The importance of textbooks is unquestionable as a teaching aid in the formation of the citizen. For this reason, it is essential that they be constantly reevaluated, regarding their contents. In the present study we evaluated the different ways that biology textbooks address the biodiversity issue. To conduct this research were used textbooks, which are part of the High School Didactic Textbooks Brazilian National Evaluation Program (PNLEM). From the results obtained in this study, we observed that some topics related to biodiversity studies are presented in a superficial way, and are sometimes wrong. It was also evident that the textbooks examined in this study were dealing the same subject with different approaches and at different depth. This suggests that adoption of a single textbook in schools can compromise the learning process of students.

A espécie ornamental Hemerocallis hybrida Hort. é uma planta herbácea perene originária da Ásia. Conduziu-se este trabalho, com o objetivo de estudar métodos artificiais de hibridação, biologia floral e o sistema reprodutivo de plantas de 'lírio-de-São-José', com vistas a gerar subsídios a programas de melhoramento genético dessa espécie ornamental. A técnica de cobertura do estigma de flores de 'lírio-de-São-José', ao invés de se cobrir toda a flor, após a realização do cruzamento artificial, proporciona maior taxa de pegamento e maturação de cápsulas de sementes (p < 0,001; Teste ² de contingência 2 x 2; correção de Yates). A antese é a melhor fenofase para realização de cruzamentos controlados, apresentando taxa de receptividade estigmática de 100%, sendo a quantidade de grãos de pólen viáveis 45% maior que na fase senescência. A espécie estudada é hermafrodita, sendo essencialmente alógama, apresentando índices de autoincompatibilidade e de autogamia iguais a zero.

The ornamental species Hemerocallis hybrida Hort. is a perennial herbaceous plant originated in Asia. The objective of the present work to study the artificial methods of hybridization¸ floral biology and reproductive system of daylily plants to support genetic and breeding programs of this species. The technique of covering the stigma of daylily's flowers with aluminum paper instead of covering the whole flower after the artificial crossing, provides higher setting and maturation of seed capsules (p < 0,001; Test ² contingency 2 x 2; correction of Yates). Blooming is the best phenophase for controlled crossings with estigmatic reception of 100%, and amount of viable pollen grains of 45% higher then the phase of the senescence. The studied species is hermaphrodite, essentially allogamous, with self-incompatibility and autogamy indexes equal to zero.

Este artigo discute os resultados de uma pesquisa que objetivou mapear a produção discente (dissertações e teses) no âmbito da violência doméstica, entre 1990 e 2006, em programas de pós-graduação em Serviço Social, Psicologia e Saúde Pública de instituições localizadas no estado do Rio de Janeiro. O estudo, centrado na análise de tendências, avanços e lacunas da referida produção, revelou a prevalência de pesquisas voltadas para o segmento infanto-juvenil, a mudança de foco da caracterização do fenômeno para a discussão de sua dinâmica, e o reduzido número de trabalhos sobre idosos.

This article discusses the results of a study that sought to map the production of master's and doctoral students concerning domestic violence, from 1990 to 2006, in graduate programs of Social Work, Psychology and Public Health at institutions located in Rio de Janeiro State. The study focused on the analysis of trends, advances and gaps in this production and revealed a prevalence of studies of children and youth, a change of focus from characterization of the phenomenon to a discussion of its dynamic and a reduced number of studies about the elderly.

Nearly 65,000 citrus EST (Expressed Sequence Tags) have been investigated using the CitEST project database. Microsatellites were investigated in the unigene sequences from Citrus spp. and Poncirus trifoliata. From these sequences, approximately 35% of the non-redundant ESTs contained SSRs. The frequencies of different SSR motifs were similar between Citrus spp and trifoliate orange. In general, mononucleotide repeats appeared to be the most abundant SSRs in the CitEST database, but we also identify di-, tri-, tetra-, penta- and hexanucleotide repeats. The AG/CT and AAG/CTT were the most common dinucleotide and trinucleotide motifs, with frequencies of 54.4% and 25.2%, respectively. Primer sequences flanking SSR motifs were successfully designed and synthesized. After in silico polymorphism analysis, a subset of sixty-eight primers was validated in different Citrus spp. and Poncirus trifoliata. PCR-amplification revealed polymorphism in citrus with all tested primer pairs and showed the potential of these markers for linkage mapping. Our study showed that the CitEST database can be exploited for the development of SSR markers that can amplify Citrus spp. and related genus for comparative mapping and other genetic analyses.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a diversidade genética em uma população de 148 híbridos de tangor 'Murcott' (Citrus reticulata Blanco x C. sinensis L. Osbeck) e laranja 'Pêra' (C. sinensis L. Osbeck) obtidos por polinização controlada, pelo uso de marcadores fAFLP e RAPD. Marcadores polimórficos (416 marcadores fAFLP e 33 RAPD) foram utilizados para avaliar a similaridade genética entre os híbridos, calculada com o coeficiente Jaccard pelo método UPGMA. A consistência de cada agrupamento foi determinada pelo programa BOOD. Houve alta similaridade genética entre os parentais. A laranja 'Pêra' apresentou maior número (132) de loci em heterozigose em relação ao tangor 'Murcott' (105), corroborando a teoria de origem híbrida para a laranja-doce. Observaram-se dois grupos distintos de plantas, e um deles abrangeu 80% dos híbridos com maior similaridade com a laranja 'Pêra'. A análise bootstrap não revelou consistência estatística entre esses grupos. Marcadores fAFLP são mais eficientes na avaliação do polimorfismo, sendo indicados para seleção de indivíduos híbridos mais próximos a um dos parentais.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic diversity in a population of 148 hybrids of 'Murcott' tangor (Citrus reticulata Blanco x C. sinensis L. Osbeck) and 'Pêra' sweet orange (C. sinensis L. Osbeck), obtained by controlled polination, using fAFLP and RAPD markers. Polymorphic markers (416 fAFLP and 33 RAPD markers) were used to evaluate genetic similarity among the hybrids, calculated by the coefficient of Jaccard, using the UPGMA method. The consistency of each group was determined by software BOOD. There was high genetic similarity within the parents. 'Pêra' sweet orange had a higher number of loci in heterozygosis (132) compared to 'Murcott' tangor (105), supporting the theory of hybrid origin for sweet oranges. Two distinct groups of plants were observed: one group had 80% of the hybrids that displayed higher genetic similarity with 'Pêra' sweet orange. The bootstrap analysis did not show consistence between the groups. The fAFLP markers are more efficient to obtain polymorphism than RAPDs and are more suitable to select hybrids closer to the parents.

Foi definida nova metodologia de avaliação de genótipos quanto à reação ao alumínio (Al3+), presente em soluções nutritivas, através da associação de análises de componentes principais e de estabilidade/adaptabilidade fenotípicas. Os experimentos foram instalados em delineamentos de blocos ao acaso, em parcelas subdivididas, com três repetições e conduzidos em casa de vegetação da Seção de Genética - Centro Experimental de Campinas/IAC, no período de 1995 a 1997. Em diferentes genótipos de capim-colonião (Panicum maximum Jacq.) foram avaliados caracteres de sistema radicular e de parte aérea, sob três concentrações de Al3+ (zero, 12 e 24 mg/L) e três períodos de permanência em solução (15, 30 e 45 dias). Reduções porcentuais, causadas pela presença do Al3+, foram calculadas para cada caráter analisado e, a partir delas, efetuadas as análises acima citadas. Considerável precisão foi observada na diferenciação dos genótipos quanto ao estresse, sugerindo o seu emprego em programas de melhoramento genético.

A new methodology of genotype screening as to aluminum (Al3+) reaction has been proposed, based on the association of principal component and stability/adaptability analyses. Experimental trials, using nutritive solutions, have been carried out in randomized complete block designs (split-plot type), with three replications, at Genetics Department in Instituto Agronômico, Campinas, SP, Brazil, from 1995 to 1997. Root system and plant traits have been evaluated in several guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq.) genotypes under three Al3+ concentrations (zero, 12 and 24 mg/L), during three time periods (15, 30 and 45 days). Percentual reductions, due to the presence of Al3+, have been calculated for each character and analyses performed on them. A good precision has been achieved in genotype differentiation, strongly suggesting the use of the new methodology in plant breeding programs.

Com o objetivo de verificar os efeitos de diferentes tipos de despendoamento no desenvolvimento de plantas e produção de sementes de milho, foi conduzido, um ensaio durante três anos agrícolas. Esse trabalho consistiu de cinco tipos de despendoamento (manual, macho-estéril, arranquio do cartucho, mecânico e testemunha) e três genótipos (linhagens A e B e o híbrido CMS 355), em suas versões férteis e estéreis. Esses tratamentos foram combinados num fatorial 5x3 com quatro repetições, num delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso. As variáveis avaliadas, após a imposição dos tratamentos foram: altura da planta, área foliar e peso da matéria seca total. Na colheita, foram avaliados: altura de inserção de espiga, índice de espiga e produção de sementes. Os resultados revelaram que num campo de produção de sementes híbridas o despendoamento manual ou o uso de macho-esterilidade são as técnicas recomendadas. Arranquio do cartucho e despendoamento mecânico afetam negativamente a produção de sementes.

In order to study the effects of various detasseling practices on seed development and seed production of maize plants, a trial was carried during three growing seasons. This work included five types of detasseling (manual, male-sterile, whorl pull-off, mechanical and control) and three genotypes in their fertile and sterile versions (lines A,B and the hybrid CMS 355). These treatments were combined in a 5x3 factorial design with four replications in a randomized block design. The variables evaluated right after the imposition of the treatments were: plant height, foliar area, and total dry matter. At harvest time ear height, ear index and seed production were evaluated. The results showed that, for field hybrid corn seed production, the use of manual detasseling or sterile-male are the recommended practices. Whorl pull-off and mechanical detasseling negatively affected seed production of maize plants.
