Regarding the families, 27 families were recorded, among which the families with the highest representativeness were: Merismopediaceae (22 taxa), Oscillatoriaceae (17 taxa), Microcystaceae and Microcoleaceae (both with 13 taxa each). Among the Cyanobacteria taxa compiled from the literature (60 taxa), 63.33% occurred exclusively in continental waters; 8.33% were recorded exclusively in estuaries; and 28.33% occurred both in continental waters and in estuaries. Among the taxa referenced in the herbaria collections, only 1 species is considered exclusively marine-estuarine, the others, all of which come from samples of continental waters.

No presente estudo foram compilados 153 taxa de Cyanobacteria, dos quais, 130 taxa são infraespecíficos e 23 são genéricos. Em relação às famílias, foram registradas 27 famílias, dentre as quais, as famílias com maior representatividade são: Merismopediaceae (22 taxa), Oscillatoriaceae (17 taxa), Microcystaceae e Microcoleaceae (ambas com 13 taxa cada). Dentre os taxa de Cyanobacteria compilados da literatura (60 taxa), 63,33% ocorreram exclusivamente em águas continentais; 8,33% foram registradas exclusivamente em estuários; e, 28,33% ocorreram tanto em águas continentais quanto em estuários. Para os táxons referenciados nos acervos dos herbários, somente uma espécie é considerada exclusivamente de marinho-estuarina; as demais, são todas provenientes de amostras de águas continentais.

RESUMO A encefalite de Rasmussen representa uma doença rara, que consiste em uma reação inflamatória dos tecidos cerebrais, de modo crônico e lentamente progressivo. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever o caso de uma paciente, submetida à hemisferectomia à esquerda, em março de 2019, em programa de reabilitação neurológica. Paciente do sexo feminino, 18 anos de idade, 4ª série do ensino fundamental, destra, que participou de programa de reabilitação neurológica interdisciplinar após hemisferectomia. Início das crises convulsivas aos 10 anos de idade, refratárias ao tratamento medicamentoso, com repercussão funcional. Foi submetida à hemisferectomia em março de 2019, com sete anos de doença em curso. Foi internada para programa de reabilitação, com equipe multiprofissional, em junho de 2020. Aplicou-se o questionário de qualidade de vida (WHOQOL-BREF), como medida de comparação antes e após o programa de reabilitação, além de medidas de participação nas atividades do programa. Os dados, apesar do pouco tempo da paciente em programa de reabilitação, mostram a importância da intervenção interdisciplinar, por meio do estabelecimento de objetivos realísticos e contextualizados.

ABSTRACT Rasmussen encephalitis is a rare disease consisting of a chronic, slowly progressive inflammatory reaction of brain tissues. The objective of this study was to describe the case of an 18-year-old female patient, studying on the fourth grade of elementary school, and right-handed, who underwent left hemispherectomy in a neurological rehabilitation program. Her seizures began at 10 years of age and were unresponsive to drug treatment, with functional repercussions. She underwent hemispherectomy in March 2019, with 7 years of ongoing disease, and was admitted for the rehabilitation program with a multidisciplinary team in June 2020. The quality-of-life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) was applied as a comparison measure before and after the rehabilitation program, along with measures of participation on the program activities. Despite the patient’s short time in a rehabilitation program, data show the importance of an interdisciplinary intervention through the establishment of specific and contextualized objectives in chronic patients.

RESUMO O excesso de peso continua a ser um problema de saúde pública, sendo, por isso, importante estimular uma mudança do estilo de vida. Todavia há comumente uma forte resistência à mudança que, associada à má gestão de tempo, escolhas alimentares incorretas, falta de disciplina e motivação, comprometem a adesão à terapêutica. A aplicação de estratégias de coaching e nudging parece estar associada ao aumento da motivação, organização e controlo sobre as escolhas alimentares, preparando o doente para uma mudança de comportamento, contribuindo para a diminuição do excesso de peso, melhoria da qualidade de vida, redução da mortalidade e morbilidade e, consequentemente, diminuição dos custos em saúde, embora estudos experimentais sejam necessários para avaliar a eficácia destas estratégias no processo de perda de peso. A aplicação destas estratégias deve ter por base teorias baseadas em evidência científica e aplicadas por pessoal técnico treinado para o efeito, como psicólogos e/ou nutricionistas com formação em coaching aplicado às Ciências da Nutrição, salientando a importância de equipas multidisciplinares para uma eficaz gestão do peso.

ABSTRACT Excessive weight remains a public health problem and it is therefore important to encourage a change in lifestyle. However, there is usually a strong resistance to change, that combined with poor time management, incorrect food choices, lack of discipline and motivation, compromises adherence to therapy. The application of coaching and nudging strategies seems to be associated with increased motivation, organization and control over food choices, preparing the patient for a change in behavior, contributing to the reduction of excessive weight, improvement in quality of life, reduction of mortality and morbidity and, consequently, decrease in health costs, although experimental studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of these strategies in the weight loss process. The application of these strategies should be based on theories, substantiated by scientific evidence and applied by trained technical personnel, such as psychologists and/or nutritionists with training in coaching applied to Nutrition Sciences, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary teams for an effective weight management.

Resumen La autoeficacia se refiere a las creencias que cada individuo tiene acerca de sus propias capacidades para ejecutar una tarea, mientras que la motivación para aprender se considera un constructo de notoria importancia debido a que estimula al individuo a realizar sus tareas. Teniendo en cuenta estos dos conceptos, el objetivo de este estudio fue identificar la correlación entre la autoeficacia y la motivación intrínseca y extrínseca en adolescentes por medio de un análisis de las posibles diferencias en las medias por género y por franjas etarias -adolescentes de 14 a 16 años y de 17 a 19 años-. En total, participaron 296 adolescentes de 14 a 19 años (M = 16.03; DE = .96) -57 % de género femenino-, estudiantes de educación media de escuelas públicas (66 %) y privadas (34 %). Específicamente, se utilizó una ficha de datos sociodemográficos, la Escala de Autoeficacia General Percibida (EAGP) y la Escala de Motivación para Aprender (EMA-EM), instrumentos con los que se realizó un análisis de correlación de Pearson y el test t de Student para muestras independientes. Como resultados, se observó una correlación positiva entre la autoeficacia y la motivación intrínseca, una correlación negativa entre la autoeficacia y la motivación extrínseca, medias más altas para la motivación intrínseca en las mujeres y para la motivación extrínseca en los hombres, y medias más altas en autoeficacia en los hombres. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre las franjas etarias. Con esto, resulta fundamental establecer estrategias para las escuelas que tengan en cuenta que la autoeficacia y la motivación pueden interferir en el proceso de aprendizaje de los adolescentes.

Abstract Self-efficacy is the belief each one has about their performance abilities. Motivation to learn is considered an important construct that encourages individuals to perform their tasks. This study aimed to verify the correlation between self-efficacy and intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in teenagers, investigating potential differences related to gender and age - younger (14 to 16 years) and older (17 to 19 years) teenagers. 296 adolescents from 14 to 19 years old (M=16.03; SD=0.96) participated in the study, 57% female, 66% were students from public schools and 34% from private schools. The instruments used were: a sociodemographic data questionnaire, the Perceived General Self-Efficacy Scale and the Scale for Evaluation of Motivation to Learn for high school students. Descriptive analyses, Pearson correlation and Student's t-test for independent samples were performed. The results indicated a positive correlation between self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation, and a negative correlation between self-efficacy and extrinsic motivation. Girls showed higher averages in intrinsic motivation and boys higher averages in extrinsic motivation. Male participants achieve higher means of self-efficacy when compared to girls, and there was no statistically significant difference regarding age. The establishing of strategies in schools is important, once self-efficacy and motivation can interfere in the teenagers' learning process.

Resumo A autoeficácia diz respeito às crenças que cada indivíduo tem sobre suas capacidades de desempenho. Já a motivação para aprender é considerada um construto importante que estimula o indivíduo a realizar suas tarefas. Neste estudo, objetivou-se verificar a correlação entre autoeficácia e motivação intrínseca e extrínseca em adolescentes, investigando possíveis diferenças nas médias por gênero e faixas etárias distintas -adolescentes mais novos (de 14 a 16 anos) e mais velhos (de 17 a 19 anos). Participaram do estudo 296 adolescentes de 14 a 19 anos (M = 16.03; DP = 0.96), 57 % do gênero feminino, estudantes de Ensino Médio de escolas públicas (66 %) e privadas (34 %). Foram utilizadas uma ficha de dados sociodemográficos, a Escala de Autoeficácia Geral Percebida e a Escala de Motivação para Aprender. Análises descritivas, correlação de Pearson e teste t de Student para amostras independentes foram realizados. Houve correlação positiva entre autoeficácia e motivação intrínseca, e correlação negativa entre autoeficácia e motivação extrínseca, sendo que as meninas apresentaram médias mais altas na motivação intrínseca e os meninos médias mais altas na motivação extrínseca. Os adolescentes do gênero masculino obtiveram maiores médias de autoeficácia quando comparados com as meninas, e não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa quanto às faixas etárias dos adolescentes. Portanto, estabelecer estratégias nas escolas é fundamental, uma vez que a autoeficácia e a motivação podem interferir no processo de aprendizagem dos adolescentes.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION Natural and artificial ecotope infestation by the kissing bug triatomines and their colonization and infection by Trypanosoma cruzi , the Chagas disease agent, were evaluated in nine municipalities of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. METHODS Following identification, triatomine intestinal contents were analyzed by direct microscopic examination, xenoculture, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for parasite detection. Trypanosoma cruzi isolates were genotyped using three different markers. RESULTS Of 842 triatomines captured, 65% were Triatoma brasiliensis , 17.8% Triatoma pseudomaculata , 12.5% Panstrongylus lutzi , and 4.7% Rhodnius nasutus . Triatoma brasiliensis and P. lutzi adults were found in the intradomicile. T. brasiliensis, T. pseudomaculata , and R. nasutus nymphs and adults were found in the peridomicile and wild environment. Intradomiciliary and peridomiciliary infestation indexes were 5.6% and 33.7%, respectively. In the peridomicile, chicken coops were the most infested ecotope. The T. cruzi triatomine infection rate was 30.2%, of which PCR detected 29%. P . lutzi (78.1%), T . brasiliensis (24.5%), and T . pseudomaculata (22.7%) were the most infected species. TcII and III genotypes were detected in T. brasiliensis and TcIII in P. lutzi . CONCLUSIONS T. brasiliensis was found in all environments and most ecotopes with high T. cruzi infection rates. High infection rates were also detected in T . pseudomaculata and P. lutzi , suggesting their role in the interchange between the wild and peridomestic transmission cycles. The combination of PCR, microscopic examination, and xenoculture contributed to improving T. cruzi infection evaluation in triatomine bugs. The TcII and TcIII genotypes were predominant in the study area.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION : This study evaluated the clinical forms and manifestation severities of Chagas disease among serologically reactive individuals from Western Rio Grande do Norte (Northeastern Brazil). METHODS : This cross-sectional study included 186 adults who were evaluated using electrocardiography, echocardiography, chest radiography, and contrast radiography of the esophagus and colon. A clinical-epidemiological questionnaire was also used. RESULTS : The indeterminate, cardiac, digestive, and cardiodigestive clinical forms of Chagas disease were diagnosed in 51.6% (96/186), 32.2% (60/186), 8.1% (15/186) and 8.1% (15/186) of the participants, respectively. Heart failure (functional classes I-IV) was detected in 7.5% (14/186) of the participants, and 36.4% (24/66), 30.3% (20/66), 15.2% (10/66), 13.6% (9/66), and 4.5% (3/66) of the patients were at stage A, B1, B2, C, and D, respectively. Dilated cardiomyopathy and electrocardiographic changes were detected in 10.2% (19/186) and 48.1% (91/186) of the participants, respectively. Apical aneurysm was diagnosed in 10.8% (20/186) of the participants, and other changes in the segmental myocardial contractility of the left ventricle were diagnosed in 33.9% (63/186) of the participants. Megaesophagus (groups I-IV) was observed in 7% (13/186) of the participants, megacolon (grades 1-3) was detected in12.9% (24/186) of the participants, and both organs were affected in 29.2% (7/24) of the megacolon cases. CONCLUSIONS : We detected various clinical forms of Chagas disease (including the digestive form). Our findings indicate that clinical symptoms alone may not be sufficient to exclude or confirm cardiac and/or digestive damage, and the number of patients with symptomatic clinical forms may be underestimated.

O comprometimento das funções executivas constitui um dos défices mais robustos na perturbação depressiva. Contudo, poucos instrumentos têm sido concebidos para avaliar de forma breve e específica as funções executivas na depressão. Este estudo objetiva avaliar as funções executivas em doentes com depressão, analisar a relação existente entre a gravidade da depressão e o desempenho do funcionamento executivo, e verificar a sensibilidade e especificidade do INECO Frontal Screening (IFS) comparativamente com a Behavioural Assessment of Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS) na avaliação das funções executivas em doentes com depressão. 50 participantes com depressão (Média idades = 43.46, DP = 10.71) e 35 participantes pertencentes ao grupo de controlo (Média idades = 40.91, DP = 10.46), de ambos os géneros, foram avaliados através do IFS e da BADS. Os participantes com depressão apresentaram um funcionamento executivo deficitário comparativamente ao grupo de controlo tanto no IFS como na BADS e o aumento da gravidade da depressão fez-se acompanhar por um maior comprometimento do funcionamento executivo. O IFS demonstrou-se tão sensível e específico quanto a BADS na deteção da disfunção executiva em doentes com depressão. Este estudo sugere que o IFS é um instrumento breve, sensível e específico para avaliar as funções executivas na depressão.

The impairment of executive functions is one of the most robust deficits in depressive disorder. However, very few tools have been designed to assess briefly and specific executive functions in depression. This study aims to assess executive functions in patients with depression, examine the relationship between depression severity and performance of executive functioning, and verify the sensitivity and specificity of INECO Frontal Screening (IFS) compared with the Behavioural Assessment of Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS) in the assessment of executive functions in patients with depression. 50 participants with depression (mean age = 43.46, SD = 10.71) and 35 participants in the control group (mean age = 40.91, SD = 10.46), of both genders, were evaluated by the IFS and the BADS. Participants with depression showed an executive functioning deficit compared to the control group in both the IFS and the BADS and the increasing severity of depression was accompanied by a greater impairment in executive functioning. IFS proved as sensitive and specific as the BADS in the detection of executive dysfunction in patients with depression. This study suggests that IFS is a brief, sensitive and specific tool to assess executive functions in depression.

El compromiso de las funciones ejecutivas constituye uno de los déficits más robustos en la depresión. Sin embargo, pocos instrumentos han sido concebidos para evaluar de forma breve y específica las funciones ejecutivas en la depresión. El Objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar las funciones ejecutivas en enfermos con depresión, analizar la relación existente entre la gravedad de la depresión y el desempeño ejecutivo, y verificar la sensibilidad y especificidad del INECO Frontal Screening (IFS) comparativamente con la Behavioural Assessment of Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS) en la evaluación de las funciones ejecutivas en enfermos con depresión. 50 participantes con depresión (Media edades = 43.46, DP = 10.71) y 35 participantes pertenecientes al grupo de control (Media edades = 40.91, DP = 10.46), de ambos géneros, fueron evaluados a través del IFS y de la BADS. Los participantes con depresión presentaron un funcionamiento ejecutivo deficitario comparativamente al grupo de control tanto en el IFS como en la BADS y el aumento de la gravedad de la depresión se hizo acompañar por un mayor compromiso del funcionamiento ejecutivo. El IFS se demostró tan sensible y específico cuanto la BADS en la detección de la disfunción ejecutiva en enfermos con depresión. Este estudio sugiere que el IFS es un instrumento breve, sensible y específico para evaluar las funciones ejecutivas en la depresión.

A bebida alcoólica denominada “aguardente de zimbro” é uma bebida alcoólica tradicional portuguesa produzida na região da Serra da Estrela, elaborada a partir da maceração de bagas de zimbro em diferentes destilados nomeadamente aguardente bagaceira, aguardente vínica e aguardente de medronho. Esta bebida, que era tradicionalmente produzida para consumo próprio nas famílias rurais, é atualmente produzida industrialmente e vendida aos turistas como uma das imagens de marca dos produtos tradicionais da região. No entanto, há uma falta de informação técnica e científica sobre esta bebida. Neste trabalho é efetuada uma primeira caracterização desta bebida com base nas suas características sensoriais e físico-químicas. Neste trabalho foram analisadas algumas amostras comerciais, duas amostras caseiras e duas amostras de outras bebidas alcoólicas feitas com zimbro. Foram realizadas as seguintes determinações analíticas nas diferentes amostras recolhidas: densidade, teor alcoólico, matéria seca, acidez total, acidez fixa, acidez volátil, pH, características cromáticas, metanol, acetaldeído, acetato de etilo, álcoois superiores e atividade antioxidante total. Foi efetuada também, a caracterização sensorial descritiva dessas bebidas a fim de encontrar os atributos sensoriais mais característicos da bebida. Os resultados mostram que, sob a designação de "aguardente de zimbro" existem várias bebidas, com uma cor amarela, mas com algumas diferenças na composição físico-química e descrição sensorial. Efetivamente, estas bebidas, com um teor de etanol entre 37.7 e 48.3 % vol., apresentam valores de acidez de 25 a 1360 mg/L, pH de 3.91 a 5.89, matéria seca de 0.75 a 75.24 g/L e densidade de 0.9446 para 0.,9770 g/cm³. Foram também verificadas diferenças importantes nas características cromáticas, composição volátil e atividade antioxidante total. É de referir, no entanto, que são necessários mais estudos de modo a aprofundar a caracterização desta bebida "tradicional".

The alcoholic drink called ‘aguardente de zimbro’ is a traditional Portuguese alcoholic beverage made by the people living around Serra da Estrela, using the maceration of juniper berries in different distillates like arbutus spirit, marc spirit and wine spirit. Traditionally homemade for own consumption in rural families, this beverage is now sold to tourists and promoted and included in the food patrimony of the region. However, there is a lack of technical and scientific information about this beverage. A first evaluation of this beverage is done in this work, based on its sensory and physicochemical characteristics. A few commercial samples, two homemade and another two samples of alcoholic beverages made with juniper were analysed in this work. Several analytical determinations, namely density, alcoholic strength, dry matter, total acidity, fixed acidity, volatile acidity, the pH, chromatic characteristics, methanol, acetaldehyde, ethyl acetate, fusel alcohols and total antioxidant activity were done on the samples with the aim of characterising these Portuguese flavoured juniper spirits. The descriptive sensory analysis of these drinks was also done in order to find the more characteristic sensory attributes of the drink. The results show that under the label ‘aguardente de zimbro’ there are several drinks, with a yellow colour, but with several differences in physicochemical composition and sensory description. In fact, these drinks, with ethanol content from 37.7 to 48.3 % vol. present values of acidity from 25 to 1360 mg/L, pH from 3.91 to 5.89, dry matter 0.75 to 75.24 g/L and density from 0.9446 to 0.9770 g/cm³. Important differences were also observed in the chromatic characteristics, volatile composition and total antioxidant activity. Therefore, further research must be done in order to characterise this ‘traditional’ drink.

INTRODUÇÃO: A infecção pelo Trypanosoma cruzi foi avaliada em uma área endêmica do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil, por inquérito soroepidemiológico amostral em moradores da zona rural. MÉTODOS: Dezesseis municípios foram sorteados, 15 da mesorregião oeste e um da central, com população estimada em 83.852 indivíduos. Foram coletadas 1.950 amostras de sangue no oeste e 390 em Caicó. A detecção de anticorpos anti-T. cruzi foi realizada usando os kits Chagatest® ELISA, HAI-hemaglutinação e a reação de imunofluorescência indireta. Nos soros com resultados indeterminados foi realizado o western blot TESAcruzi® para confirmação da reatividade. RESULTADOS: A estimativa da soroprevalência revelou 6,5% para a mesorregião oeste e 3,3% em Caicó. A soropositividade eleva-se progressivamente com a idade dos indivíduos até a quinta década de vida em Caicó e na sexta década na mesorregião oeste. Apenas o grau de escolaridade e o conhecimento do triatomíneo evidenciaram associação à soropositividade. Não foram identificados indivíduos sororreativos com idade inferior a 18 anos. CONCLUSÕES: A infecção pelo T. cruzi persiste mais elevada e concentrada em municípios da área central da mesorregião oeste, mas evidências sugerem o declínio da transmissão vetorial nessa mesorregião e em Caicó. As variáveis epidemiológicas parecem não exercer influência na soropositividade, à exceção da escolaridade e conhecimento do triatomíneo entre indivíduos sororreativos da mesorregião oeste.

INTRODUCTION: A seroepidemiological survey was carried out to evaluate Trypanosoma cruzi infection in an endemic area of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, involving rural residents. METHODS: Sixteen municipalities were randomly selected, 15 from the west mesoregion and one from the central, with an estimated population of 83,852 individuals. A total of 1,950 blood samples were collected in the west mesoregion and 390 in Caicó. Anti-T. cruzi antibodies were detected using the Chagatest® ELISA HAI-hemagglutination kits and indirect immunofluorescence. As sera presented indeterminate results, TESAcruzi® western blot was performed to confirm reactivity. RESULTS: An estimated seroprevalence of 6.5% was determined for the west mesoregion and 3.3% for Caicó. Seropositivity rises progressively with the age of individuals, up to 40 years in Caicó and up to 50 years in the west mesoregion. Only educational level and knowledge regarding the triatomine were associated with seropositivity. No seroreactive individuals under 18 years of age were identified. CONCLUSIONS: Infection by T. cruzi remains high and is concentrated in municipalities in the central western area of the west mesoregion; however, evidence suggests a decline in vector transmission in this mesoregion and in Caicó. Epidemiological variables appear not to influence seropositivity, with the exception of education and knowledge concerning the triatomine, among seroreactive individuals from the west mesoregion.

This study aims to examine the use of ICT by tourism public organization of the host cities the World Cup 2014 to be held in Brazil and its application to management participatory tourism. The research was based on the use of documentary study method based on data qualitative collection and divided into two stages. In the first stages tried to identify the main instruments available to encourage social participation in Brazil through the websites of the Federal Government and the Ministry of Tourism; and the second stages were analyzed websites of the municipalities in the Brazilians State Capitals that are the host cities of 2014 World Cup, aiming to observe the existence of a space for citizen participation in the county, there are of Public Tourism Town Organization and tools Participatory management of Tourism released by this Organization.There wasa lot of possibilities of information to citizens, but few opportunities to participate in decision-making processes. In relation to tourism, the process decision-making occurs on only in the view of the activity managers and their advisers.

Este estudio se propone analizar el uso de las herramientas de la Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (TIC) por parte de los organismos públicos de turismo de las ciudades sede de la Copa del Mundo de 2014, que se realizará en Brasil, y su aplicación para una gestión participativa del turismo. La investigación se basó en la utilización del método de estudio documental basado en la recolección de datos cualitativos y fue dividida en dos etapas. En la primera fase se buscó identificar los principales instrumentos disponibles para el estímulo de la participación social en Brasil a través de los sitios Web del Gobierno Federal y del Ministerio de Turismo. En la segunda fase se analizaron los sitios Web de las municipalidades de las capitales de los estados brasileños que son ciudades sede de la Copa del Mundo de 2014, con el fin de observar la existencia de un espacio de participación para el ciudadano en el municipio, la existencia de un órgano municipal de turismo y las herramientas de gestión participativa del turismo dispuestas por este órgano. Se observó una gran cantidad de posibilidades de información para el ciudadano, pero pocas posibilidades de participar de los procesos de toma de decisiones. En relación al turismo, el proceso de toma de decisiones ocurre únicamente bajo la visión de los gestores de la actividad y sus consejeros.

OBJECTIVE: Adenosine deaminase acts on adenosine and deoxyadenosine metabolism and modulates the immune response. The adenosine deaminase G22A polymorphism (20q.11.33) influences the level of adenosine deaminase enzyme expression, which seems to play a key role in maintaining pregnancy. The adenosine deaminase 2 phenotype has been associated with a protective effect against recurrent spontaneous abortions in European Caucasian women. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the G22A polymorphism of the adenosine deaminase gene is associated with recurrent spontaneous abortions in Brazilian women. METHODS: A total of 311 women were recruited to form two groups: G1, with a history of recurrent spontaneous abortions (N = 129), and G2, without a history of abortions (N = 182). Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood with a commercial kit and PCR-RFLP analysis was used to identify the G22A genetic polymorphism. Fisher's exact test and odds ratio values were used to compare the proportions of adenosine deaminase genotypes and alleles between women with and without a history of recurrent spontaneous abortion (p<0.05). The differences between mean values for categorical data were calculated using unpaired t tests. The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was assessed with a chi-square test. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were identified for the frequencies of adenosine deaminase genotypes and alleles between the G1 and G2 groups when adjusted for maternal age. CONCLUSIONS:The results suggest that the adenosine deaminase *2 allele is associated with a low risk for recurrent spontaneous abortions, but this association is dependent on older age.

Oligosarcus jenynsii (Günther, 1864) and O. robustus Menezes, 1969 are fish species distributed in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, Uruguay, and northern Argentina. The reproductive period and recruitment, sex ratio, absolute and relative fecundity, and body length at first gonadal maturation of the two carnivorous species from Fortaleza Lagoon were analized. The specimens were sampled monthly, from May 2000 to April 2001, with fishing effort of 24 hours/month, using stationary gillnets of different mesh sizes and seine net (three samples per edge). The records of each individual included total length, total weight, gonad weight, sex and gonadal maturity stage. The reproductive period of both O. jenynsii and O. robustus ranges from May/June to November/December, according to the bimonthly variation of the mean values of gonosomatic index, and the relative frequencies of the gonadal maturation stages. Recruitment of new individuals to the population occurs from November/December to March/April. The sex ratio is different from 1:1 for O. jenynsii and similar to 1:1 for O. robustus. The mean absolute fecundity, calculated by counting sub-sampled oocytes from mature females, was 14,483 oocytes for O. jenynsii, and 16,308 oocytes for O. robustus. The first maturation curve shows that O. jenynsii begins to reproduce between 84 mm and 104 mm (total length), and O. robustus between 126 mm and 146 mm, probably at similar ages.

Durante estudos sobre a fauna flebotomínea em assentamento do Instituto Nacional de Reforma Agrária (INCRA) na Serra da Bodoquena, Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil, foram observados cães com manifestações clínicas sugestivas de leishmaniose visceral. Inquérito sorológico para leishmaniose em 97 cães, utilizando reação de imunofluorescência indireta, mostrou 23 (23,7%) soros reagentes. Amostras do parasita foram identificadas como Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi.

During previous research on phlebotomine fauna in a settlement of the Brazilian National Agrarian Reform Institute (INCRA) on the Bodoquena Range, Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, dogs were observed with clinical aspects suggestive of visceral leishmaniasis. A serological survey to leishmaniasis in 97 dogs, by indirect immunofluorescence test, showed 23 (23.7%) serum positive dogs. Samples of the parasites were identified as Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi.
