ABSTRACT Introduction: The emergence of orthodontic aligners has provided an aesthetic and comfortable option for orthodontic treatment. However, the encapsulated design of the aligners can influence the masticatory muscles, and might compromise safe treatment. Objective: This preliminary longitudinal study aimed to investigate whether the use of orthodontic aligners affects the biting force and myoelectric activity of the superficial masseter and anterior temporal muscles. Methods: Ten subjects participated in the study and underwent treatment during an 8-month follow-up period. The root mean square (RMS), the median power frequency (MPF) of the surface electromyography (sEMG) signals, and the biting force (kgf) were recorded and normalized relative to the pretreatment condition. The data were analyzed by repeated-measure analysis of variance (ANOVA), with the significance level set at 5%. Results: Both the superficial masseter and the anterior temporal muscles presented an increase in sEMG signal activity during the treatment, with a marked increase in the latter compared to the former (p<0.05). Moreover, a significant decrease in bite force was evidenced (p<0.05). Conclusions: This preliminary study observed that the orthodontic aligners affected the muscle recruitment pattern of masticatory muscles, and reduced biting performance during the 8-month follow-up period. RESUMO Introdução: O surgimento dos alinhadores ortodônticos tem proporcionado uma opção estética e confortável para o tratamento ortodôntico. No entanto, o design encapsulado dos alinhadores pode influenciar os músculos mastigatórios e comprometer a segurança do tratamento. Objetivo: Este estudo longitudinal preliminar teve como objetivo investigar se o uso de alinhadores ortodônticos afeta a força de mordida e a atividade mioelétrica dos músculos masseter superficial e temporal anterior. Métodos: Dez indivíduos participaram do estudo e foram submetidos a tratamento durante um período de acompanhamento de 8 meses. RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar características de jovens adultos afro-brasileiros com oclusão excelente, incluindo protrusão bimaxilar, e compará-los com os padrões caucasianos europeu-americanos, para determinar se há dimorfismo sexual na exibição desse fenótipo. Métodos: Radiografias cefalométricas laterais foram obtidas de 43 afro-brasileiros militares (28 homens e 15 mulheres, idade média de 22,4 ± 3,4 anos) com oclusão normal, selecionados de um grupo de 394 voluntários. Foram avaliadas 31 medidas angulares e lineares. O teste t de Student para amostras independentes foi utilizado para comparar os resultados com os estabelecidos pelos padrões caucasianos europeu-americanos, descrito previamente na literatura. Resultados: Considerando o padrão dentoalveolar, sete medidas angulares e seis lineares apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas (p< 0,001) quando comparadas aos padrões cefalométricos caucasianos. Sujeitos afro-brasileiros apresentaram menor ângulo da base do crânio (SNAr = 119,87 ± 5,66º) e comprimento da base craniana anterior (distância SN = 68,63 ± 4,50 mm) (p< 0,001). A maxila (SNA = 88,51 ± 3,23º) e a mandíbula (SNB = 85,06 ± 3,24º) estavam protruídas em relação à linha SN (p< 0,001). O dimorfismo de sexo foi significativo para L1.NB (graus) (p< 0,01) e ângulo interincisal (U1.L1) (p< 0,05). Conclusão: Jovens adultos afro-brasileiros apresentaram diferenças em relação às características dentárias e craniofaciais, quando comparados às normas europeias-americanas. Pode-se afirmar que as normas cefalométricas caucasianas não devem ser aplicadas às faces de indivíduos afro-brasileiros.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate characteristics of African-Brazilians young adults with excellent dental occlusion, including bimaxillary protrusion; compare them to European-American Caucasian standards, and determine whether there is sexual dimorphism in the display of this phenotype. Methods: Lateral cephalometric radiographs were obtained from 43 African-Brazilians within military personnel (28 males and 15 females, average age 22.4 ± 3.4 years) with normal occlusion, selected from a group of 394 volunteers. Thirty-one angular and linear measurements were evaluated. Student’s t-test for independent samples was used to compare results with those established by European-American standards, previously described in the literature. Results: Considering the dentoalveolar pattern, seven angular and six linear measurements showed statistically significant differences (p< 0.001) when compared to Caucasian cephalometric standards. African-Brazilians’ subjects showed lower cranial base angle (SNAr = 119.87 ± 5.66º) and anterior cranial base length (SN-distance = 68.63 ± 4.50 mm) (p< 0.001). The maxilla (SNA = 88.51 ± 3.23º) and the mandible (SNB = 85.06 ± 3.24º) were protruded in relation to the SN line (p< 0.001). Sexual dimorphism was significant for L1.NB (degrees) (p< 0.01), and interincisal angle (U1.L1) (p< 0.05). Conclusion: African-Brazilian young adults presented differences regarding dental and craniofacial characteristics, when compared to European-American norms. It can be stated that Caucasian cephalometric norms should not be applied to African-Brazilian faces.

Abstract: Orthodontic bonding systems are submitted to demineralization and remineralization dynamics that might compromise their surface smoothness, and favor biofilm aggregation and caries development. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a cariogenic challenge model (in vitro pH-cycling model) on the surface roughness and topography of 3 bonding materials: Transbond™ XT (XT), Transbond™ Plus Color Change (PLUS) and Fuji Ortho™ LC (FUJI), by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Six specimens with standardized dimensions and surface smoothness were fabricated per group, and the materials were manipulated in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions. No polishing was necessary. AFM tests were performed before and after pH-cycling, taking 3 readouts per specimen. The roughness results (Ra) were obtained at nanometric levels (nm) and surface records were acquired in two- and three-dimensional images of height and lock-in phase of the material components. The surfaces of all groups analyzed in the study were morphologically altered, presenting images suggestive of matrix degradation and loss of matrix-load integrity. FUJI presented the greatest increase in surface roughness, followed by XT and PLUS, respectively (p≤0.001). Nevertheless, the roughness values found did not present sufficient degradation to harbor bacteria. The surface roughness of all tested materials was increased by pH-cycling. The use of materials capable of resisting degradation in the oral environment is recommended, in order to conserve their integrity and of the surrounding tissues.

Resumo Objetivo: o objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a técnica cirúrgica sem retalho como alternativa à tradicional corticotomia alveolar utilizada para acelerar o movimento dentário experimental. Métodos: para induzir a movimentação dentária experimental em ratos Wistar, foram aplicados 40 cN de força ortodôntica aos primeiros molares superiores esquerdos. Quarenta ratos foram distribuídos nos grupos (n = 5) controles (GC1, GC3, GC7 e GC14) e experimentais (GE1, GE3, GE7, GE14), nos quais foram realizadas perfurações alveolares com uma ponta lança. As datas de eutanásia foram estabelecidas em 1, 3, 7 e 14 dias, respectivamente, após o início do movimento dentário. A quantidade de deslocamento dentário foi medida com um paquímetro e os osteoclastos presentes no ligamento periodontal da raiz mesial do dente movimentado foram contados por meio de avaliação histológica (coloração por fosfatase ácida resistente ao tartarato, TRAP). Resultados: embora não tenha havido diferença na quantidade de deslocamento dentário dentro dos subgrupos dos períodos experimentais correspondentes (p> 0,05), quando GC14 e GE14 foram comparados, um número maior de osteoclastos foi contado no grupo experimental (p< 0,00). Conclusão: os autores concluíram que as perfurações alveolares corticais sem retalho levaram a uma atividade osteoclástica mais intensa no décimo quarto dia; entretanto, nenhuma evidência de movimento dentário acelerado pôde ser notada.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate a flapless surgical technique as an alternative to traditional alveolar corticotomy used to accelerate orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Methods: To induce OTM in Wistar rats, 40 cN of orthodontic force were applied to the maxillary left first molars. Forty rats were distributed into control groups (CG1, CG3, CG7 and CG14) and experimental groups (n= 5), in which alveolar perforations were made using a spear-shaped guide bur (EG1, EG3, EG7, EG14). Euthanasia dates were set at 1, 3, 7 and 14 days, respectively, after tooth movement began. The amount of OTM was measured with a caliper, and osteoclasts present in the periodontal ligament of the mesial root of the moved tooth were counted by means of histological evaluation (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase staining, TRAP). Results: Although there was no difference in the amount of OTM within subgroups of corresponding experimental periods (p> 0.05), when EG14 and CG14 were compared, a larger number of osteoclasts was counted in the experimental group (p< 0.00). Conclusion: The authors concluded that flapless cortical alveolar perforations led to more intense osteoclastic activity on the fourteenth day; nevertheless, no evidence of accelerated OTM could be noted.

Resumo Introdução: a expansão rápida da maxila (ERM) é a terapia de escolha para a correção da dimensão transversa esquelética em crianças e adolescentes, associando-se efeitos ortopédicos e dentários. Com a finalidade de prevenir os efeitos dentoalveolares indesejáveis e otimizar o potencial de expansão esquelética em indivíduos com estágios avançados de maturação esquelética, a técnica de expansão rápida da maxila assistida por mini-implantes (MARPE) foi proposta por Lee e colaboradores em 2010. Objetivo: o presente estudo apresenta um protocolo sistematizado para seleção de mini-implantes indicados para a MARPE, mediante avaliação de imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC). Variáveis relacionadas à espessura de tecido ósseo e tecido mole nas regiões de interesse do palato, bem como em relação ao anel de fixação dos mini-implantes do parafuso expansor, são analisadas e discutidas para proporcionar melhor desempenho na prática clínica.

Abstract Introduction: Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is the therapy of choice to correct skeletal transverse dimension in children and adolescents, associating orthopedic and dental effects. In an attempt to prevent the undesirable dentoalveolar effects and optimize the potential of skeletal expansion in individuals in advanced stages of skeletal maturation, the miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE) was proposed by Lee et al. in 2010. Objective: This paper presents a systematized protocol for selection of miniscrews indicated for MARPE, by the evaluation of cone-beam computed tomographies (CBCT). Variables related with the bone and soft tissue thicknesses at the palatal regions of interest, as well as in relation to the fixation rings of miniscrews of the palatal expander are analyzed and discussed to provide better performance in the clinical practice.

Abstract Introduction The aim of this study was to propose a method of electrodes positioning on the superficial masseter and anterior temporalis muscles for surface electromyographic (sEMG) recordings in order to overcome some known methodological constraints. Methods Fifteen volunteers with normal occlusion participated in two experimental sessions within a 7 day-period. Surface electrodes were placed on two different locations that were based on palpable and individual anatomical references. Surface EMG signals (2000 Hz per channel; A/D: 16 bits; gain: 2000 X; band-pass filter: 20-500 Hz) were recorded under three conditions: mandibular rest position, 30% and 100% of maximum voluntary bite force. Three measurements of maximal bite force were taken by using a force transducer positioned over the lower right first molar region and the highest record was taken into account. The root mean square value was considered for analysis. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), paired t test, and the Bland-Altman method comprised the statistical analyses. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results ICC records for right and left masseter and anterior temporalis muscles at T0 (first sEMG record) and T7 (second sEMG record) intervals were significantly different (p<0.05). The results showed satisfactory to excellent reproducibility of RMS values at rest, MVBF and 30% MVBF, as well as for MVBF in kgf. Conclusion The results showed reliable reproducibility for the sEMG signal recording in masseter and anterior temporalis muscles from the protocols presented and under the three conditions investigated.

RESUMO Introdução: a etiologia do apinhamento dentário pode estar relacionada à constrição das arcadas dentárias em diversas dimensões, e a manipulação apropriada do perímetro da arcada, por meio da intervenção em casos de discrepâncias de base óssea, pode ser o fator chave para a dissolução do apinhamento, especialmente em casos onde a movimentação de incisivos é limitada em decorrência de problemas periodontais ou restrições relacionadas ao perfil facial. Objetivos: o presente relato de caso ilustra uma paciente de 24 anos de idade, com deficiência transversa de maxila, apinhamento das arcadas superior e inferior, má oclusão de Classe II, 1a divisão, subdivisão direita, incisivos superiores previamente traumatizados e perfil reto. A abordagem de tratamento não-cirúrgica e sem extrações foi viável devido à técnica de expansão rápida da maxila assistida por mini-implantes (MARPE, do inglês miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion). Métodos: o dispositivo MARPE foi confeccionado a partir de um expansor Hyrax convencional apoiado em quatro mini-implantes. Foi adotado o protocolo de expansão lenta, com um período total de ativações de 40 dias e 3 meses de contenção. Uma mecânica de tração intrusiva apoiada em mini-implantes foi utilizada para a correção da relação de Classe II subdivisão direita, adequação do perímetro da arcada inferior e correção do desvio da linha média antes da inclusão dos incisivos centrais superiores. Resultados: os registros pós-tratamento demonstraram o aumento de 5,0 mm na distância intermolares, relação bilateral de Classe I de molares e caninos, resolução do apinhamento superior e inferior, linhas médias dentárias coincidentes e intercuspidação adequada. Conclusões: a técnica MARPE é uma abordagem de tratamento efetiva para a resolução da deficiência de perímetro das arcadas dentárias relacionada à discrepância maxilar transversa em pacientes adultos.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Etiology of dental crowding may be related to arch constriction in diverse dimensions, and an appropriate manipulation of arch perimeter by intervening in basal bone discrepancies cases, may be a key for crowding relief, especially when incisors movement is limited due to underlying pathology, periodontal issues or restrictions related to soft tissue profile. Objectives: This case report illustrates a 24-year old woman, with maxillary transverse deficiency, upper and lower arches crowding, Class II, division 1, subdivision right relationship, previous upper incisors traumatic episode and straight profile. A non-surgical and non-extraction treatment approach was feasible due to the miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion technique (MARPE). Methods: The MARPE appliance consisted of a conventional Hyrax expander supported by four orthodontic miniscrews. A slow expansion protocol was adopted, with an overall of 40 days of activation and a 3-month retention period. Intrusive traction miniscrew-anchored mechanics were used for correcting the Class II subdivision relationship, managing lower arch perimeter and midline deviation before including the upper central incisors. Results: Post-treatment records show an intermolar width increase of 5 mm, bilateral Class I molar and canine relationships, upper and lower crowding resolution, coincident dental midlines and proper intercuspation. Conclusions: The MARPE is an effective treatment approach for managing arch-perimeter deficiencies related to maxillary transverse discrepancies in adult patients.

Aim: To compare 2 types of treatment for Class II malocclusion assessing mandibular behavior in subjects submitted to full orthodontic treatment with standard edgewise appliance and cervical headgear (Kloehn appliance) and those who used cervical headgear in the first period and with full orthodontic appliance in the second period. Methods: The sample consisted of 80 children treated with either cervical headgear combined with full fixed appliances (n=40, group 1), or with cervical headgear at first (n=40, group 2). In both groups, lateral cephalometric radiographs were compared with those made at the beginning of treatment, at its end and at 5-year post-retention phase, in order to quantify the cephalometric measures (8 angular and 3 linear), presenting the mandibular behavior in the antero-posterior and vertical directions. All patients were treated with no extraction and no use of Class II intermaxillary elastics during the full orthodontic treatment. Results: In both groups, the effective treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion did not interfere in the direction and amount of growth of mandibular condyles and remodeling at the lower border, with no influence on the anti-clockwise rotation of the mandible. The mandibular growth also was observed after the orthodontic treatment, suggesting that it is influenced by genetic factors. Conclusions: These observations may lead to the speculation that growing patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion and low mandibular plane are conducive to a good treatment and long-term stability with one or two periods of treatment.

INTRODUÇÃO: o presente estudo teve como objetivo desenvolver um método para avaliar as mudanças nas áreas transversais palatinas e linguais em pacientes submetidos à expansão rápida da maxila (ERM). MÉTODOS: a amostra foi composta por 31 indivíduos com má oclusão Classe I de Angle, submetidos a ERM e divididos em dois grupos, tratados com expansores tipo Haas (17 pacientes) e de Hyrax (14 pacientes). Tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico foram adquiridas em T0 e T1 (antes da expansão e seis meses após a estabilização do parafuso). Áreas transversais da maxila e mandíbula foram avaliadas nas regiões de primeiros molares permanentes e pré-molares e comparadas entre T0 e T1. A área oclusal mandibular também foi analisada. RESULTADOS: as áreas transversais maxilares aumentaram 56,18mm2 e 44,32mm2 para regiões posterior e anterior, respectivamente. Esses valores foram menores para mandíbula, representando aumentos de 40,32mm2 e de 39,91mm2 para as seções anterior e posterior. Não foram encontradas diferenças quando se comparam os dois expansores. A área oclusal mandibular aumentou 43,99mm2 e incisivos inferiores vestibularizaram. Incrementos de 1,74mm e 1,7mm ocorreram entre as distâncias intermolares e interpré-molares inferiores. Essas mesmas distâncias apresentaram incrementos de 5,5mm e de 5,57mm para maxila. CONCLUSÃO: as áreas transversais avaliadas e oclusal de mandíbula aumentaram significativamente após a ERM. O processo descrito parece ser um método confiável e preciso para avaliar as mudanças das área intrabucais propostas.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to develop a method to assess the changes in palatal and lingual cross-sectional areas in patients submitted to rapid maxillary expansion (RME). METHODS: The sample comprised 31 Class I malocclusion individuals submitted to RME and divided into two groups treated with Haas (17 patients) and Hyrax (14 patients) expanders. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were acquired at T0 (before expansion ) and T1 (six months after screw stabilization). Maxillary and mandibular cross-sectional areas were assessed at first permanent molars and first premolars regions and compared at T0 and T1. Mandibular occlusal area was also analyzed. RESULTS: Maxillary cross-sectional areas increased in 56.18 mm2 and 44.32 mm2 for the posterior and anterior regions. These values were smaller for the mandible, representing augmentation of 40.32 mm2 and 39.91 mm2 for posterior and anterior sections. No differences were found when comparing both expanders. Mandibular occlusal area increased 43.99mm2 and mandibular incisors proclined. Increments of 1.74 mm and 1.7 mm occurred in mandibular intermolar and interpremolar distances. These same distances presented increments of 5.5 mm and 5.57 mm for the maxillary arch. CONCLUSION: Occlusal and cross-sectional areas increased significantly after RME. The method described seems to be reliable and precise to assess intraoral area changes.

OBJETIVO: avaliar, por meio de imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico (TCFC), as mudanças esqueléticas e dentárias, imediatas e após 6 meses de contenção, causadas pela expansão rápida da maxila (ERM) em pacientes com má oclusão de Classe II, divisão 1. MÉTODOS: dezessete crianças com má oclusão de Classe II, divisão 1, e deficiência transversal da maxila, foram submetidas a ERM, de acordo com o protocolo proposto por Haas. TCFC foram realizadas antes da ERM (T1), imediatamente após a fase ativa (T2) e após 6 meses de contenção (T3). Alterações anteroposteriores (SNA, SNB, ANB, overjet e RM) e verticais (N-ANS, ANS-Me, N-Me e overbite) foram analisadas. RESULTADOS: imediatamente após a ERM, enquanto a maxila se deslocou para frente, a mandíbula se movimentou para frente e para baixo, aumentando o overjet e diminuindo o overbite. Durante o período de contenção, a maxila retornou para posterior e a mandíbula deslocou em direção anterior, aumentando a altura facial anterior. CONCLUSÃO: a realização da ERM permitiu que a mandíbula se posicionasse mais anteriormente do que inferior durante o período de contenção, melhorando a relação molar de Classe II em 75% dos pacientes avaliados.

OBJECTIVE: To assess skeletal and dental changes immediately after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in Class II Division 1 malocclusion patients and after a retention period, using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging. METHODS: Seventeen children with Class II, Division 1 malocclusion and maxillary skeletal transverse deficiency underwent RME following the Haas protocol. CBCT were taken before treatment (T1), at the end of the active expansion phase (T2) and after a retention period of 6 months (T3). The scanned images were measured anteroposteriorly (SNA, SNB, ANB, overjet and MR) and vertically (N-ANS, ANS-Me, N-Me and overbite). RESULTS: Significant differences were identified immediately after RME as the maxilla moved forward, the mandible moved downward, overjet increased and overbite decreased. During the retention period, the maxilla relapsed backwards and the mandible was displaced forward, leaving patients with an overall increase in anterior facial height. CONCLUSION: RME treatment allowed more anterior than inferior positioning of the mandible during the retention period, thus significantly improving Class II dental relationship in 75% of the patients evaluated.

Objetivo: investigar se há evidências científicas para comprovar a hipótese de que a presença de aparelhos ortodônticos fixos influencia a microbiota bucal. Métodos: a busca por artigos foi realizada nas bases de dados do PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge e Ovid, incluindo artigos publicados em inglês até 17 de maio de 2012. Esses deveriam relatar estudos observacionais humanos que apresentassem as palavras-chave: "aparelho ortodôntico fixo" e "colonização microbiológica"; ou "patógenos periodontais"; ou "Streptococcus"; ou "Lactobacillus"; ou "Candida"; ou "Tannerella forsythia"; ou "Treponema denticola"; ou "Fusobacterium nucleatum"; ou "Actimomyces actinomycetemcomitans"; ou "Prevotella intermedia"; ou "Prevotella nigrescens"; ou "Porphyromonas gingivalis". Artigos foram previamente selecionados pelo título e resumo. Artigos que atenderam aos critérios de inclusão foram analisados e classificados como de baixa, moderada ou alta qualidade metodológica. Uma nova lista de verificação detalhada para avaliação da qualidade foi desenvolvida, com base na informação necessária para a extração de dados aplicáveis para as revisões de literatura. O desenho do estudo, a amostra, o período de acompanhamento, coleta e métodos de análise microbiana, o tratamento estatístico, resultados e discussão foram avaliados. Resultados: a busca inicial encontrou 305 trabalhos. Em seguida, 33 artigos foram selecionados pelo título e resumo. Após a leitura do texto completo, apenas oito artigos preencheram os critérios de inclusão. Desses, quatro foram classificados como artigos com baixa qualidade metodológica e quatro como moderados. Os estudos de qualidade metodológica moderada foram incluídos na revisão sistemática. Conclusão: a literatura revelou evidência moderada de que a presença de aparelhos fixos exerce influência na quantidade e qualidade da microbiota bucal.

Objective: To investigate whether there is scientific evidence to support the hypothesis that the presence of orthodontic fixed appliances influences the oral microbiota. Methods: The search for articles was conducted in PubMed; ISI Web of Knowledge and Ovid databases, including articles published in English until May 17th, 2012. They should report human observational studies presenting the following keywords: "fixed orthodontic appliance" AND "microbiological colonization"; OR "periodontal pathogens"; OR "Streptococcus"; OR "Lactobacillus"; OR "Candida"; OR "Tannerella forsythia"; OR "Treponema denticola"; OR "Fusobacterium nucleatum"; OR "Actimomyces actinomycetemcomitans"; OR "Prevotella intermedia", OR "Prevotella nigrescens"; OR "Porphyromonas gingivalis". Articles were previously selected by title and abstract. Articles that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed and classified as having low, moderate or high methodology quality. A new detailed checklist for quality assessment was developed based on the information required for applicable data extraction for reviews. The study design, sample, follow-up period, collection and microbial analysis methods, statistical treatment, results and discussion were assessed. Results: The initial search retrieved 305 articles of which 33 articles were selected by title and abstract. After full-text reading, 8 articles met the inclusion criteria, out of which 4 articles were classified as having low and 4 as moderate methodological quality. The moderate methodological quality studies were included in the systematic review. Conclusions: The literature revealed moderate evidence that the presence of fixed appliances influences the quantity and quality of oral microbiota.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and fluoride releasing capacity of 3 bonding materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty nine specimens with standardized surface smoothness and dimensions were prepared. The antimicrobial capacity of the materials against S. mutans, L. casei and C. albicans was evaluated by determining the percentage of growth inhibition of these microorganisms in an inoculated medium, obtained by optical density readouts on a spectrophotometer. The potential to interfere in microbial growth on the surface of the studied materials was observed by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The fluoride release capacity in ultrapure water for 14 days was analyzed by means of ion chromatography. RESULTS: The PLUS group presented the highest percentage of microbial inhibition and the most contamination-free surface. The FUJI group presented the best fluoride release capacity. CONCLUSIONS: The TransbondTM Plus Color Change was the one that presented the best general behavior considering the evaluated aspects.

AIM: The aim of this systematic review was to compare the maxillary dental effects of cervical headgear and pendulum appliance during distalization of permanent maxillary first molars. METHODS: A literature survey from databases covering the period from 1956 to August 2008 was carried out. Randomized controlled trials (RCT) and controlled clinical trials (CCT) were included. Two reviewers selected and extracted the data independently, and also assessed the quality of the retrieved studies. RESULTS: The search strategy resulted in 48 articles, of which 3 met the inclusion criteria. Distal molar movement with headgear versus pendulum appliance was identified. In all studies selected, the methods used to detect and analyze the distal molar movement were valid and generally well know. All articles included an error analysis method and considered the risk for confounding factors, but only one study used blinding in measurements. CONCLUSIONS: The studies showed that both cervical headgear with patient compliance and a non-compliance pendulum appliance are very effective in distalizing maxillary molars. However, additional RCTs with larger samples of both molar distalizing appliances are needed to confirm this result and provide further reliable scientific evidence.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito do flúor na prevenção da erosão do esmalte circunjacente a braquetes ortodônticos sob desafio erosivo. Braquetes edgewise foram colados com resina TransbondTM XT na superfície vestibular de 40 incisivos bovinos. Os dentes foram divididos em 4 grupos (n = 10): G1: Saliva remineralizadora; G2: Desafio erosivo; G3: Grupo experimental submetido à aplicação tópica de flúor gel neutro (NaF a 2%) antes do desafio erosivo; G4: Grupo experimental submetido à três aplicações diárias de dentifrício fluoretado (1500 ppmF PFM) durante o desafio erosivo. Após 14 dias de desafio erosivo, foi realizado exame visual e táctil por dois examinadores calibrados e treinados (Kappa = 0,867). Os escores utilizados foram: 0 = Esmalte hígido, 1 = Esmalte desmineralizado sem cavidade, 2 = Esmalte desmineralizado com cavidade, 3 = Esmalte remineralizado sem cavidade, 4 = Esmalte remineralizado com cavidade. Foram utilizados os testes de Kruskal-Wallis e Mann-Whitney para determinar os níveis de erosão, estabelecendo um intervalo de confiança de 95% (p<0,05). O G2 e G3 apresentaram 100% de grau 2, com grandes cavidades, apresentando superfície rugosa e opaca. O G4 apresentou 50% de escore 3 e 50% de escore 4. Considerando as condições estudadas, verificou-se uma diferença significativa entre G2 e G4 e entre G3 e G4 (p<0,01). Diferentemente da aplicação única de gel fluoretado neutro, a elevada frequência de utilização de dentifrício com flúor em baixa concentração apresentou grande influência durante a dinâmica de erosão.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of fluoride in prevention of tooth erosion around orthodontic brackets under erosive challenge. Edgewise brackets were bonded with TransbondTM XT composite on vestibular surface of 40 bovine incisors. The teeth were assigned to 4 groups (n=10): G1: Remineralizing saliva; G2: Erosive challenge; G3: Experimental group submitted to topical application of neutral fluoride gel (2% NaF) before erosive challenge; G4: Experimental group submitted to three daily applications of fluoride dentifrice (PFM 1500 ppmF) during erosive challenge. After 14 days of erosive challenge, direct visual and tactile examination were performed by two calibrated and trained examiners (Kappa = 0.867). The following scores were used: 0 = Intact enamel, 1 = Demineralized enamel without cavity, 2 = Demineralized enamel with cavity, 3 = Remineralized enamel without cavity, 4 = Remineralized enamel with cavity. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were applied to determine erosion levels, establishing a confidence interval of 95% (p<0.05). G2 and G3 presented 100% of score 2, with large cavities, presenting rough and opaque surface. G4 showed 50% of score 3 and 50% of score 4. Considering the studied conditions, it was found a significant difference between G2 and G4 and between G3 and G4 (p<0.01). By contrast to single application of neutral fluoride gel, the high frequency of use of fluoride at low concentration had a great influence during the dynamics of erosion.
