Abstract Objective To present the different aspects that may be involved in the genesis and maintenance of obesity in children and adolescents. Data source Narrative review of articles published in the PubMed, Scielo, Lilacs, Scopus and Google Scholar databases, using the search terms: overweight, obesity, pre-conception, prenatal, infants, schoolchildren, children, and adolescents. The search was conducted in studies written in Portuguese, English and Spanish, including narrative, integrative or systematic reviews, meta-analyses, cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies, published between 2003 and 2023. Data synthesis A total of 598 studies were initially screened and 60 of them, which showed the main biopsychosocial aspects related to greater risks of excessive adiposity in the pediatric age, were included in the review. The data were presented taking into account the incidence of risk factors and their consequences in six periods: pre-conception, pre-natal, infant, preschool, school age, and adolescence. ABSTRACT Objective: To set cutoff points for the triglyceride and glucose index (TyG) as a marker of insulin resistance (IR) for the pediatric population. Subjects and methods: This was a cross-sectional study with schoolchildren population-based data using data of 377 schoolchildren age 10 to 17 years of both sexes. We studied metabolic variables associated with IR indicators, such as fasting insulin and blood glucose, to calculate the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA-IR), and we studied triglycerides (TG) to determine the TyG index. We obtained TyG cutoff values for IR using the receiver operation characteristic (ROC), with definitions of sensitivity (Sen), specificity (Spe), and area under the ROC curve (AUC), with the HOMA-IR as reference. Results: The cutoff points of the TyG index for IR in adolescents are 7.94 for both sexes, 7.91 for boys, and 7.94 for girls, indicating moderate discriminatory power. When we also considered anthropometric variables of excess weight [TyG-BMI (body mass index)] and visceral fat [TyG-WC (waist circumference)], these indexes reached AUC values higher than 0.72, enhancing their potential use for a good diagnosis. Conclusion: TyG has proven to be a useful instrument for identifying IR in adolescent health screening, with high discrimination capacity when added to anthropometric variables, making it a feasible and inexpensive option. Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) and serum concentrations of retinol, correlating them with IGF-1 concentrations in preschoolers with DS. Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted on 47 children with DS aged 24 to 72 months, in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. VAD was determined by the relative dose-response (RDR) test. Retinol serum concentration ≤ 0.70 μmol/L and IGF-1 serum concentration below the 3rd percentile for sex and age were considered to represent deficiency. C-reactive protein (CRP) was determined at the beginning of the study. Weight, height, and information about fever and/or diarrhea were obtained at the beginning of the study. Results: VAD prevalence was 25.5% (12/47), and 74.5% (35/47) of the children had deficient retinol before the intervention. CRP was not associated with VAD. Mean IGF-1 were 103.5 ng/mL (SD = 913) for the group with VAD and 116.3 ng/mL (SD = 54.9) for the group with no VAD (p-value = 0.85); 8.5% (4/47) of the children showed deficient IGF-1, but without VAD. No association was observed between VAD and IGF-1 deficiency. A moderate positive correlation was observed between pre-intervention retinol and IGF-1 (ρ = 0.37; p-value = 0.01). Conclusion: a high prevalence of VAD and deficient retinol was observed and there was a positive correlation between serum retinol and IGF-1.

Resumo Objetivos: avaliar o estado nutricional de iodo em adolescentes gestantes, levando-se em consideração o aumento na demanda de iodo na gestação e a ausência de estratégias de iodização para essa população. Métodos: estudo transversal realizado com 62 adolescentes gestantes e 71 não gestantes assistidas na atenção primária. O estado nutricional de iodo foi determinado pela concentração de iodo em amostras urinárias. O teor de iodo no sal culinário também foi avaliado. Para as análises comparativas das variáveis categóricas utilizou-se o teste de qui-quadrado e para as variáveis contínuas o teste Kruskal-Wallis, considerando intervalo de confiança (IC) de 95% e nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: a média da concentração de iodo no sal domiciliar foi de 25,1 mg/kg (IC95%= 11,1-67,5 mg/kg), com maior teor médio no sal culinário de gestantes (p<0,028). Em relação ao estado nutricional de iodo, 71% das adolescentes gestantes mostraram-se deficientes e 29% iodo-suficientes, com diferença significativa quando comparadas aos 38% de deficiência e 62% de suficiência no grupo controle (p<0,001). Conclusões: observou-se deficiência iódica entre adolescentes gestantes, mesmo diante de maiores concentrações de iodo no sal domiciliar, expondo um paradoxo entre maior consumo e menor suficiência neste grupo. Assim, sugere-se considerar a suplementação de iodo na gestação, buscando-se minimizar os efeitos desta carência sobre a saúde maternoinfantil.

Abstract Objectives: to evaluate the nutritional status of iodine in pregnant adolescents, taking into account the increase in the demand for iodine during pregnancy and the absence of iodization strategies for this population. Methods: cross-sectional study conducted with 62 pregnant and 71 non-pregnant adolescents assisted in primary care. The nutritional status of iodine was determined by urinary samples. The iodine concentration in the consumed culinary salt was also evaluated. For the comparative analyses of categorical variables, the Chi-square test was used and for the continuous variables, the Kruskal-Wallis test, considering a 95% confidence interval (CI) and significance level of 5%. Results: the mean iodine concentration in household salt was 25.1 mg/kg (CI95%= 11.1-67.5 mg/kg), with higher mean content in culinary salt in the group of pregnant women (p<0.028). Regarding the nutritional status of iodine, 71% of pregnant adolescents were deficient and 29% iodine-sufficient, with significant difference when compared to 38% of deficiency and 62% of sufficiency in the control group (p<0.001). Conclusions: there was an iodic deficiency among pregnant adolescents, even in the face of higher concentrations of iode in household salt, exposing a paradox between higher consumption and lower sufficiency in this group. Thus, it is suggested to consider iodine supplementation during pregnancy, seeking to minimize the effects of this deficiency on maternal and child health.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: To identify epidemiological and clinical characteristics of multisystemic inflammatory syndrome associated with coronavirus infection as one of the severe forms of COVID-19 involvement in children and adolescents. METHODS: review was based on articles published in 2020 in the PubMed, Medline, Scopus, SciELO and Cochrane databases. SUMMARY: Multisystemic inflammatory syndrome is a serious clinical disorder that affects children and adolescents and is associated with the detection of previous exposure to SARS-CoV-2. It is characterized by the installation of a shock picture, with a significant increase in inflammatory markers such as presentations of Kawasaki Disease or shock syndrome related to Kawasaki Disease, or even toxic shock syndrome, with the clinical picture being characterized by fever of difficult control, rash, conjunctivitis, peripheral edema, generalized pain in the extremities and gastrointestinal symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Although the vast majority of children with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, it is necessary to consider that some have a hyperinflammatory response. It is essential that health professionals receive information that can assist in the recognition of this clinical condition, differentiating it from other diagnoses, so that early and appropriate treatment is instituted.

Resumo Objetivo: Identificar fatores que contribuem para o aumento da suscetibilidade e gravidade da COVID-19 em crianças e adolescentes obesos e suas consequências para a saúde. Fontes de dados: Estudos publicados entre 2000 e 2020 nas bases de dados PubMed, Medline, Scopus, SciELO e Cochrane. Síntese dos dados: A obesidade é uma comorbidade altamente prevalente em casos graves de COVID-19 em crianças e adolescentes e o isolamento social pode levar ao aumento do acúmulo de gordura. Tecido adiposo excessivo, déficit de massa magra, resistência à insulina, dislipidemia, hipertensão, altos níveis de citocinas pró-inflamatórias e baixa ingestão de nutrientes essenciais são fatores que comprometem o funcionamento dos órgãos e sistemas no indivíduo obeso. Esses fatores estão associados a danos nos sistemas imunológico, cardiovascular, respiratório e urinário, juntamente com a modificação da microbiota intestinal (disbiose). Na infecção por SARS-CoV-2, essas alterações orgânicas causadas pela obesidade podem aumentar a necessidade de assistência ventilatória, risco de tromboembolismo, taxa de filtração glomerular reduzida, alterações na resposta imune inata e adaptativa e perpetuação da resposta inflamatória crônica. Conclusões: A necessidade de isolamento social pode ter o efeito de causar ou agravar a obesidade e suas comorbidades e pediatras precisam estar cientes desse problema. Diante de crianças com suspeita ou confirmação de COVID-19, os profissionais de saúde devem 1) diagnosticar o excesso de peso; 2) aconselhar sobre cuidados de saúde em tempos de isolamento; 3) fazer a triagem de comorbidades, garantindo que o tratamento não seja interrompido; 4) medir os níveis de imunonutrientes; 5) orientar a família respeitando as especificidades da situação; e 6) encaminhamento a unidades qualificadas para cuidar de crianças e adolescentes obesos, quando necessário.

Abstract Objective: To identify factors that contribute to the increased susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 in obese children and adolescents, and its health consequences. Sources: Studies published between 2000 and 2020 in the PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus, SciELO, and Cochrane databases. Summary of findings: Obesity is a highly prevalent comorbidity in severe cases of COVID-19 in children and adolescents; social isolation may lead to increase fat accumulation. Excessive adipose tissue, deficit in lean mass, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, high levels of proinflammatory cytokines, and low intake of essential nutrients are factors that compromise the functioning of organs and systems in obese individuals. These factors are associated with damage to immune, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems, along with modification of the intestinal microbiota (dysbiosis). In severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection, these organic changes from obesity may increase the need for ventilatory assistance, risk of thromboembolism, reduced glomerular filtration rate, changes in the innate and adaptive immune response, and perpetuation of the chronic inflammatory response. Conclusions: The need for social isolation can have the effect of causing or worsening obesity and its comorbidities, and pediatricians need to be aware of this issue. Facing children with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, health professionals should 1) diagnose excess weight; 2) advise on health care in times of isolation; 3) screen for comorbidities, ensuring that treatment is not interrupted; 4) measure levels of immunonutrients; 5) guide the family in understanding the specifics of the situation; and 6) refer to units qualified to care for obese children and adolescents when necessary.

Resumo O consumo de soja é um hábito milenar de populações do mundo oriental e aumentou recentemente no mundo ocidental. Os riscos e benefícios dessa prática têm sido extensivamente estudados, com uma necessidade fundamental atual de integração das informações disponíveis. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão integrativa sobre este tema, a fim de consolidar as informações disponíveis. Com base na principal questão: “Qual o impacto do consumo de soja na saúde humana?”, foram revistas publicações classificadas como artigos originais e revisões publicadas de 1998 a 2020 nas bases de dados Scopus, PubMed, SciELO, Web of Science e Cochrane Library. Foram selecionados 97 estudos. Na presente revisão, foram descritos o impacto geral da soja sobre a saúde humana e sua qualidade proteica, os efeitos da exposição precoce com fórmulas de soja e os efeitos do consumo de soja no câncer de mama, endometrial e ovariano, câncer de próstata, câncer gastrointestinal, doença cardiovascular, doenças do metabolismo da glicose e diabetes do tipo 2, obesidade, saúde reprodutiva, menopausa, osteoporose feminina e masculina, microbiota, imunidade e imunomodulação, função da tireoide, distúrbio de déficit de atenção e hiperatividade, e função renal.

Abstract Soy consumption is a millenary habit of populations of the eastern world and has recently increased in the western world. The risks and benefits of this practice have been extensively studied, with a current fundamental need of integration of available information. The aim of this study was to carry out an integrative review on this topic, in order to consolidate the available information. Based on the main question: “What is the impact of soy consumption on human health?”, were reviewed publications classified as original articles and reviews published from 1998 to 2020 in the databases Scopus, PubMed, SciELO, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. A total of 97 studies were selected. In the present review were described the general impact of soy on human health and its protein quality, the effects of early exposure using soy formulas, and the effects of soy consumption on breast cancer, endometrial and ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, cardiovascular disease, glucose metabolism and type 2 diabetes, obesity, reproductive health, menopause, female and male osteoporosis, microbiota, immunity and immunomodulation, thyroid function, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and renal function.

Resumo Contexto A obesidade é uma epidemia global, inclusive entre as crianças. Diante desse perfil, torna-se necessário identificar precocemente alterações cardiovasculares presentes em crianças com sobrepeso/obesidade. A ultrassonografia no modo B das carótidas comuns avalia, com precisão e em tempo real, as alterações precoces na medição da espessura do complexo médio-intimal (CMI), podendo detectar o início do processo de aterosclerose. Objetivos O presente estudo comparou a espessura do CMI entre crianças escolares com e sem sobrepeso/obesidade. Métodos Foram incluídas 59 crianças de ambos os sexos, entre 7 e 10 anos de idade, oriundas de centros de saúde de São Paulo. As crianças foram caracterizadas de acordo com o escore z do índice de massa corporal (IMC) em dois grupos, com e sem sobrepeso/obesidade. Os grupos foram comparados em relação à espessura do CMI. Resultados Os grupos foram homogêneos em idade e sexo. A medida média do CMI no grupo com sobrepeso/obesidade foi de 0,49 (± 0,07) mm; no grupo não sobrepeso/obeso, foi de 0,41 (± 0,05) mm (p < 0,01). Essas diferenças se mantiveram quando os grupos com e sem sobrepeso/obesidade foram comparados separadamente por sexo e pelos lados direito e esquerdo. O coeficiente de correlação entre a medida do CMI e o escore z do IMC foi de 0,61 (intervalo de confiança de 95% = 0,42-0,75). Dentro do mesmo estado nutricional, não houve diferença entre os gêneros, nem entre os lados direito e esquerdo. Conclusões A espessura do CMI de crianças com sobrepeso/obesidade foi maior e diretamente proporcional ao escore z do IMC, denotando maior risco cardiovascular nesse grupo.

Abstract Background Obesity is a global epidemic, including among children. It is therefore necessary to identify cardiovascular changes in overweight/obese children as early as possible. Mode B ultrasonography of the common carotids can be used to precisely evaluate in real time early changes in the thickness of the intima-media complex (IMC), which can detect onset of the atherosclerosis process. Objectives This study compared IMC thickness between schoolchildren with and without overweight/obesity. Methods A sample of 59 children of both sexes, aged 7 to 10 years, were recruited from health centers in São Paulo, Brazil. Children were classified by z scores for body mass index (BMI) into two groups, with or without overweight/obesity. These groups were then compared in terms of IMC thickness. Results The groups were homogenous for age and sex. The mean IMC measurement in the group with overweight/obesity was 0.49 (± 0.07) mm, whereas in the group free from overweight/obesity it was 0.41 (± 0.05) mm (p < 0.01). These differences were maintained when groups with and without overweight/obesity were compared separately by sex and for right and left sides. The coefficient for the correlation between IMC measurement and BMI z score was 0.61 (95% confidence interval = 0.42-0.75). Within the same nutritional status group, there were no differences between sexes or between right and left sides. Conclusions Intima-media thickness was greater among children with overweight/obesity and was directly proportional to BMI z score, denoting increased cardiovascular risk in this group.

Resumo Objetivo Avaliar a prevalência de anormalidades nos perfis lipídico e glicêmico entre crianças e adolescentes com sobrepeso e obesidade e também verificar se existe correlação entre os escores-z de índice de massa corporal (z-IMC) e indicadores de comorbidades ligados a esses perfis. Métodos Estudo de corte transversal multicêntrico, incluiu 417 pacientes entre 7 e 18 anos e IMC acima do escore-z > + 1 que fizeram a consulta de caso novo entre 2008 e 2012. Antropometria e coleta de sangue foram realizadas. As prevalências de dislipidemia, hiperglicemia e resistência insulínica foram avaliadas, juntamente com as correlações entre essas variáveis e o z-IMC. Resultados Dislipidemia foi encontrada em 43,4% dos meninos e 66,1% das meninas, sem diferença entre os sexos. Hiperglicemia foi encontrada em 6,2% dos indivíduos. Resistência insulínica esteve presente entre 32,3 e 41,7% dos casos, sem diferença estatística entre os sexos. Foi observada correlação com z-IMC para triglicerídeos quando considerado o grupo todo e entre as meninas; e para HDL-c apenas entre as meninas. A glicemia apresentou correlação quando considerado o grupo todo, mas não quando separados por sexo. Os indicadores de resistência insulínica estiveram todos correlacionados com IMC, mesmo quando se executou correção para a idade. Conclusões Sobrepeso e obesidade levam a prevalências elevadas de dislipidemia e resistência insulínica. Os escores-z de IMC mostraram discreta correlação positiva com glicose e triglicerídeos e negativa com HDL-c. Por outro lado, correlação positiva mais forte foi observada com os indicadores de resistência insulínica.

Abstract Objective To evaluate the prevalence of abnormalities in plasma lipid and glucose profiles among overweight and obese children and adolescents, and to assess the presence of a correlation between body mass index Z-scores and indicators of comorbidities related to both profiles. Methods This was a multicenter cross-sectional study conducted at two outpatient clinics. The study included all 417 comers for the first visit from 2008 to 2012, aged between 7 and 18 years, with BMI above the Z-score +1. Anthropometry and blood sampling were obtained. The prevalence of dyslipidemias, hyperglycemia, and insulin resistance were evaluated, together with the correlations of these variables with the increase of Z-BMI. Results Dyslipidemia was observed in 43.4% of the boys and 66.1% of the girls, with no difference between genders. High glucose levels were detected in 6.2% of the individuals. Insulin resistance was present in 32.3% and 41.7% of the cases, with no statistical significance between boys and girls. Correlations between the Z-BMI were noted for triglycerides in the entire group and among girls; for HDL-c, only among girls; for glucose, a correlation was observed for the entire group, but not when stratified by gender. The indicators of insulin resistance were all correlated with Z-BMI, even when corrected for age. Conclusions Overweight and obesity give origin to a high prevalence of dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. BMI Z-scores showed a weak positive correlation with glucose and triglyceride, and negative with HDL-c. In turn, the strongest positive correlation was found with insulin resistance indicators.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar se a obesidade altera os marcadores ultrassonográficos de risco metabólico e cardiovascular em crianças. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 80 crianças entre 6 e 10 anos, comparando 40 crianças obesas com 40 crianças normais. Foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros: peso; altura; índice de massa corporal; pressão arterial; massa gorda; taxa metabólica basal; HDL-colesterol, LDL-colesterol e colesterol total; insulina de jejum e glicose; índice quantitativo de verificação da sensibilidade à insulina (QUICKI); Homeostase Modell Assessment (HOMA-IR); Diâmetro basal da artéria braquial; Dilatação mediada pelo fluxo da artéria braquial (FMD) e variação do índice de pulsatilidade (PI-C). Resultados: Entre obesos e não obesos, observaram-se diferenças significativas na pressão arterial sistólica (97,7±8,4 vs. 89,0±5,8 mmHg; p<0,01), pressão arterial diastólica (64,3±7,9 vs. 52,9±5.1 mmHg; p<0,01), gordura corporal (45,1±5,9 vs. 21,3±6,0%; p<0,01), taxa metabólica basal (1216,1±102,1 vs. 1072,9±66,4 Kcal; p<0,01), colesterol (164,7±25,2 vs. 153,4±15,8 mg/dL; p=0,03), insulina de jejum (7,1±5,2 vs. 2,8±1,8 pIU/mL; p<0,01), HOMA-IR (1,5±1,1 vs. 0,6±0,4; p<0.01), diâmetro basal da artéria braquial (2,5±0,3 vs. 2,1±0,3 mm; p<0,01); PI-C (-15,5±27,2 vs. -31,9±15,5%; p<0,01), redução de QUICKI (0,4±0,05 vs. 0,4±0,03; p<0,01) e FMD (6,6±3,2 vs. 15,6±7,3%; p<0,01). ASTRACT Objective: To evaluate whether the obesity alters ultrasonographical markers of metabolic and cardiovascular disease risk in children. Methods: A cross-sectional study evaluated 80 children aged between 6 and 10 years, comparing 40 obese with 40 normal children. The following parameters were assessed: weight; height; body mass index; arterial blood pressure; body fat; basal metabolic rate; HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and total cholesterol; fasting insulin and glucose; quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI); homeostasis model of assessment - insulin resistance (HOMA-IR); basal diameter of the brachial artery; brachial artery flow mediated dilation (FMD) and of pulsatility index change (PI-C). Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi realizar uma revisão integrativa sobre a qualidade do perfil lipídico e dos compostos bioativos presentes no azeite de abacate, bem como sobre os seus potenciais benefícios para a saúde humana. Foram identificados trabalhos publicados nas bases de dados Scopus, PubMed, Lilacs, SciELO e Web of Science, além de Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações. A pesquisa encontrou dados referentes ao perfil lipídico e ao teor de substâncias bioativas presentes no azeite de abacate extraído das variedades Margarida, Quintal, Fortuna, Ouro Verde, Hass e Fuerte. O azeite de abacate caracteriza-se por apresentar, em média, teores elevados de ácidos graxos monoinsaturados (60%), teor intermediário de ácidos graxos saturados (24%) e baixo teor de ácidos graxos poli-insaturados (16%). O ácido graxo oleico (ômega-9) é o de maior concentração (aproximadamente 55%). Os principais esteróis, tocoferóis e carotenoides encontrados foram β-sitosterol, α-tocoferol e luteína, respectivamente. O azeite de abacate possui propriedades físico-químicas semelhantes às do azeite de oliva. Em modelos animais, é capaz de prevenir a disfunção mitocondrial cerebral e hepática induzida pelo diabetes, associado à diminuição de estresse oxidativo, LDL-c e peroxidação lipídica. Seus benefícios são atribuídos principalmente às concentrações de ácido oleico, por sua atividade cardioprotetora, ao β-sitosterol, por sua propriedade anti-inflamatória, e ao α-tocoferol e à luteína, pela propriedade antioxidante. Assim, o azeite de abacate se destaca pelo teor elevado de ácidos graxos monoinsaturados e de compostos bioativos, como tocoferóis, carotenoides e fitoesteróis. Análises em modelos animais, aliadas às análises de qualidade e segurança, atestam os benefícios e a possibilidade de introdução do referido azeite para uso comestível, substituindo óleos de qualidade inferior e criando nova alternativa gastronômica ao consumidor.

Abstract The aim of this study was to carry out an integrative review on the quality of the lipid profile and bioactive compounds present in avocado oil, as well as its potential benefits to human health. Papers were identified, published in the Scopus, PubMed, Lilacs, SciELO and Web of Science databases, as well as in the Digital Thesis and Dissertation Library. The survey found data on the lipid profiles and bioactive contents of avocado oils extracted from the varieties Margarida, Quintal, Fortuna, Ouro Verde, Hass and Fuerte. Avocado oil is characterized by high levels of monounsaturated fatty acids (60%), intermediate contents of saturated fatty acids (24%) and low contents of polyunsaturated fatty acids (16%). The fatty acid oleic acid (omega-9) is the one with the highest concentration (approximately 55%). The major sterols, tocopherols and carotenoids found were β-sitosterol, α-tocopherol and lutein, respectively. Avocado oil has physicochemical properties similar to those of olive oil. In animal models, it is able to prevent the cerebral and hepatic mitochondrial dysfunction induced by diabetes, associated with a reduction in oxidative stress, LDL-c and lipid peroxidation. Its benefits are attributed mainly to the oleic acid concentrations for their cardio-protective activity, β-sitosterol for its anti-inflammatory properties, and α-tocopherol and lutein for their antioxidant properties. Thus avocado oil stands out for its high contents of monounsaturated fatty acids and bioactive compounds such as tocopherols, carotenoids and phytosterols. Analyses in animal models coupled with quality and safety analyses have attested to the benefits of avocado oil and the possibility of introducing it for edible use, replacing inferior quality oils and creating a new gastronomic alternative for the consumer.

Nutritional iron deficiency anemia is considered the main public health problem of poor less-developed and developing countries. The World Health Organization has estimated that 1.5-2.0 billion persons are anemic. It has been said that close to 1 million deaths are linked to iron deficiency anemia. The groups most vulnerable to this form of anemia are said to be small children and women of reproductive age. Our goal is to show that iron fortification in the water, will control anemia. The method used was a literature review. Methods have been identified to control anemia, but the fortification of water is a more efficient, low cost, reaches the entire population, prevents and treats deficiency anemia. We concluded that the iron fortification of drinking water at home is a simple, effective, and low-priced approach for the prevention of iron deficiency anemia prevalent in poor and developing countries.

A anemia por deficiência nutricional de ferro é considerada o principal problema de saúde pública dos países menos-desenvolvidos e em desenvolvimento. A Organização Mundial de Saúde estimou que 1,5-2,0 milhões de pessoas são anêmicas. Aproximadamente 1 milhão de mortes estão ligadas a anemia por deficiência de ferro. Os grupos mais vulneráveis a anemia são crianças e mulheres em idade reprodutiva. Nosso objetivo é mostrar que fortificação de ferro na água, irá controlar anemia. O método utilizado foi revisão da literatura. Diversos métodos têm sido identificados para controle da anemia, mas a fortificação da água é uma forma mais eficiente e de baixo custo, atingindo toda a população, previnindo e tratando a anemia por deficiência. Concluímos que a fortificação de ferro na água potável em casa é uma abordagem simples, eficaz e de baixo custo para a prevenção da anemia ferropriva prevalente nos países pobres e em desenvolvimento.

Resumo Objetivos: considera-se, em geral, que crianças obesas praticam menos atividade física e consomem mais alimentos, mas esse aspecto tem sido muito pouco explorado. O presente estudo objetivou comparar a alimentação e o padrão de atividade física de crianças e adolescentes eutróficos e portadores de sobrepeso/obesidade. Métodos: 126 estudantes com idades entre 6 e 18 anos foram avaliados por meio de antropometria, registro alimentar e grau de atividade física. Eutróficos e portadores de sobrepeso/obesidade foram comparados de acordo com a ingestão de calorias, macro e micronutrientes e de acordo com as prevalências de inatividade física e de ingestão deficiente de micronutrientes. Resultados: observou-se diferença na quantidade de calorias ingeridas por unidade de IMC (eutróficos 97,6 [92,2 - 112,5] e sobrepeso/obesidade 70,5 [72,2 - 90,8], p = 0,0061) e na ingestão de cálcio (eutróficos 546,2 [517,2 - 673,9] e sobrepeso/obesidade 440,7 [404,4 - 523,4], p = 0,0366). Os dois grupos apresentaram sedentarismo e elevada prevalência de deficiência na ingestão de micronutrientes, especialmente cálcio e vitaminas A, E e C, mas sem diferença entre eutróficos e portadores de sobrepeso/obesidade. Conclusões: consumo de energia e de macronutrientes e grau de atividade física foram semelhantes, quando comparados indivíduos eutróficos com portadores de sobrepeso/obesidade. O consumo de cálcio foi menor no grupo sobrepeso/obesidade e o de vitamina C menor no grupo eutróficos. Esses resultados mostram a importância de considerar todos os fatores etiológicos que podem levar à obesidade a fim de que possam associar-se novas estratégias de prevenção e controle às intervenções tradicionais.

Summary Objective: it is broadly accepted, but little explored, that obese children practice less physical activity and eat more. This study has the objective of comparing feeding habits and physical activity between eutrophic and overweight/obese children and adolescents. Methods: 126 students with ages ranging from 6 to 18 years were evaluated. Eutrophic and overweight/obese students were compared according to calorie intake, macro and micronutrients, prevalence of physical inactivity and ingestion of micronutrients. Results: differences were observed in the amount of calories ingested per unit of BMI (eutrophic, 97.6, and overweight/obese, 70.5, p=0.0061), as well as in calcium intake (eutrophic, 546.2, and overweight/obese, 440.7, p=0.0366). Both groups presented sedentarism, as well as a high prevalence of micronutrient intake deficiency, especially calcium and vitamins A, E, and C, but with no difference observed between eutrophic and overweight/obese subjects. Conclusion: energy and macronutrients consumption, as well as physical activity, were similar between eutrophic and overweight/obese. Calcium intake was lower in the overweight/obese group and the ingestion of vitamin C was lower in the eutrophic group. These results demonstrate the importance of considering all etiologic factors that may lead to obesity, so that new strategies for prevention and control may be added to traditional interventions.
