ABSTRACT Purpose Evaluate and compare the performance of cognitive functions between elderly with and without auditory processing disorders. Methods Twenty-eight healthy elderly (14 Control group and 14 Auditory Processing Disorder group - APD group) participated in the study. All elderly were submitted to (central) auditory processing evaluation, P300 event-related potential and brief cognitive battery (BCB). In the comparison between subjects, the Mann-Whitney test was applied and in the intra-subjects comparison, the Wilcoxon signed rank test was used. To verify if there was an association between the performance of the PAC and the cognitive variables, Spearman's correlation was used. Results There were no statistically significant differences between the Control and APD groups for the cognitive abilities assessed by BCB, as well as for the P300 cognitive potential variables. Conclusion Elderly with auditory processing disorders do not seem to show greater cognitive difficulties compared to elderly of the same age group without auditory processing disorders, exception of the clock drawing test, whose task involves multiple cognitive functions, including visuospatial processing, executive function, semantic memory, and planning. RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar e comparar as funções cognitivas entre idosos com e sem alteração do processamento auditivo central. Método Vinte e oito idosos saudáveis (14 do grupo controle e 14 do grupo Transtorno do Processamento Auditivo Central - TPAC) participaram do estudo. Todos os idosos foram submetidos à bateria mínima de avaliação do processamento auditivo central (PAC), ao potencial auditivo cognitivo P300 e a bateria cognitiva breve (BCB). Na comparação entre sujeitos, foi aplicado o teste de Mann-Whitney e na comparação intra-sujeitos, utilizamos o teste de postos sinalizados de Wilcoxon. Para verificar se houve associação entre o desempenho do PAC e das variáveis cognitivas, foi utilizada a correlação de Spearman. Resultados Não houve diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre os grupos ‘Controle’ e TPAC para a maioria das habilidades cognitivas avaliadas por meio da BCB, bem como para as variáveis do potencial cognitivo P300. Contudo, houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre o desempenho do grupo ‘Controle’ e TPAC para a prova do desenho do relógio. Além disso, foi possível observar correlação entre o desempenho do teste do relógio e no TPF. RESUMO Objetivo:verificar o efeito de um programa de reabilitação vestibular em trabalhadores com tonturas da Divisão de Nutrição e Dietética de um Hospital Universitário. Métodos: participaram 13 trabalhadores, um do sexo masculino e 12 do feminino, com idades entre 42 e 65 anos. Todos foram avaliados pré e pós programa de reabilitação vestibular por meio do Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Índice de Capacidade para o Trabalho e Escala Visual Analógica. O programa foi realizado em grupos no local de trabalho. Na análise estatística foram utilizados o teste análise de variância para um fator pareado e o Qui-quadrado. Resultados: na comparação pré e pós reabilitação vestibular foram verificadas diferenças significantes na pontuação do Dizziness Handicap Inventory e da Escala Visual Analógica. Na análise qualitativa do Índice de Capacidade para o Trabalho observou-se aumento do número de trabalhadores que passaram a considerar melhor sua capacidade para o trabalho. Conclusão: a reabilitação vestibular realizada em grupos e no próprio ambiente de trabalho mostrou-se efetiva para a melhora na queixa de tontura nos trabalhadores da Divisão de Nutrição e Dietética. Acredita-se que a experiência positiva deste programa possa ser estendida para outros setores.

ABSTRACT Objective: to verify the effect of a vestibular rehabilitation program on workers with dizziness from the Division of Nutrition and Dietetics at a University Hospital. Methods: a total of 13 employees between 42 and 65 years of age participated, of whom, 1 was male, and 12, females. They were evaluated before and after the vestibular rehabilitation program using the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Work Ability Index and Visual Analog Scale. The program was conducted in groups at the workplace. Statistical analysis was performed using the analysis of variance test for paired factors and the chi-square test. Results: in the pre- and post-vestibular rehabilitation comparison, significant differences were found in the Dizziness Handicap Inventory and Visual Analogue Scale scores. In the qualitative analysis of the Work Ability Index, an increase was observed in the number of workers who considered their ability to work to have improved. Conclusion: vestibular rehabilitation conducted in groups and in the working environment was effective in improving dizziness complaint in workers at the Division of Nutrition and Dietetics. It is believed that the positive experience of this program may be extended to other areas.

RESUMO Introdução Poucos estudos realizaram, concomitantemente, o potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico (PEATE) e o P300 na Síndrome de Down (SD), em indivíduos audiologicamente normais, para a avaliação da via auditiva central, principalmente pela dificuldade de realizar estes procedimentos nesta população. Estudos anteriores sugeriram que indivíduos com SD podem apresentar padrões de respostas diferentes das encontradas em indivíduos com desenvolvimento típico, sendo que a identificação destes seria fundamental para o estabelecimento de um diagnóstico audiológico preciso. Objetivo Caracterizar o PEATE e o P300 em indivíduos com SD audiologicamente normais. Método Foram analisados o PEATE e o P300 de 17 indivíduos com SD e 21 com desenvolvimento típico de sete a 15 anos. A análise foi quantitativa e qualitativa, utilizando medidas descritivas e os testes de hipótese. Resultados Os valores de latência foram menores no PEATE para o grupo SD, com diferença estatisticamente significante para a onda V, interpicos III-V e I-V; não foram encontradas diferenças significantes nos valores de latência do P300. Observou-se maior número de indivíduos com valores precoces para as latências do PEATE e com latências atrasadas para o P300 no grupo SD; ambas as comparações mostraram diferenças significantes. Conclusão Crianças e adolescentes com SD podem apresentar respostas precoces para os componentes do PEATE, sugerindo que a via auditiva destes necessita de menor tempo para a transmissão neural do estímulo acústico até o tronco encefálico. Quanto ao P300, indivíduos com SD podem apresentar latências aumentadas, sugerindo comprometimento na via auditiva central quanto ao processamento cortical da informação auditiva.

ABSTRACT Introduction Few studies have performed Brainstem (BAEP) and P300 Auditory Evoked Potentials simultaneously to assess central auditory pathways in normal hearing individuals with Down syndrome (DS), mainly because of the difficulty in applying these procedures to this population. Previous studies have suggested that individuals with DS might present different patterns of response compared with those of individuals with typical development; nevertheless, the identification of these potentials would be crucial for the establishment of an accurate audiological diagnosis. Purpose To characterize BAEP and P300 in normal-hearing individuals with DS. Methods BAEP and P300 were analyzed in 17 individuals with DS and in 21 individuals with typical development aged 7 to 15 years. The results were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed using descriptive measures and hypothesis tests. Results In the quantitative analysis, latency values were lower in the BAEP for the DS group, with statistically significant difference for wave V and interpeaks III-V and I-V; there were no significant differences in the P300 latency values. In the qualitative analysis, there were a larger number of individuals with early values for BAEP latencies and late latencies for P300 in the DS group; both comparisons showed statistically significant differences. Conclusion Children and adolescents with DS can present early responses to the components of BAEP, suggesting that their auditory pathway requires less time for the neural transmission of acoustic stimuli to the brainstem. Concerning P300, individuals with DS may present increased latencies, suggesting impairment in the central auditory pathway for the cortical processing of auditory information.

RESUMO Objetivo: Discutir a aplicabilidade clínica do Potencial Evocado Auditivo com Estímulo de Fala (PEATEf) no auxílio à identificação dos transtornos do processamento auditivo. Métodos : Foram selecionados os prontuários de 27 crianças e adolescentes, com idade entre sete e 15 anos, que apresentaram alteração no PEATEf. Foram levantados os dados referentes à avaliação comportamental do processamento auditivo desses indivíduos. Resultados: Observou-se que das 27 crianças com PEATEf alterado, 23 também apresentaram alteração de processamento auditivo. A partir dessa amostra, foi possível apontar probabilidade de 85,15% em observar avaliação comportamental do processamento auditivo alterada em uma criança que apresentou PEATEf também alterado. Conclusão: Sugere-se que o PEATEf pode ser utilizado na prática clínica como uma ferramenta importante no diagnóstico do Transtorno do Processamento Auditivo, uma vez que neste estudo uma alteração do PEATEf quase sempre representou, também, uma alteração nos resultados da avaliação comportamental do processamento auditivo, portanto pode ser utilizado para obter informações acerca da percepção dos sons da fala em crianças menores de sete anos ou de difícil avaliação comportamental.

ABSTRACT Purpose : To discuss the clinical applicability of the speech-evoked Auditory Brainstem Response (speech-evoked ABR) to help identifying auditory processing disorders. Methods : We analyzed the records of 27 children and adolescents, aged between seven and 15, who presented abnormal speech-evoked ABR. Then, the data from the behavioral auditory processing evaluation of these individuals were surveyed. Results : It was observed that, among the 27 children with abnormal speech-evoked ABR, 23 also had auditory processing disorders. Therefore, from this sample, an 85.15% probability of observing abnormal behavioral assessment of auditory processing in a child who presented abnormal speech-evoked ABR was obtained. Conclusion : It is argued that the speech-evoked ABR can be used in clinical practice as an important aid tool in the diagnosis of auditory processing disorder, because, in this study, an abnormal speech-evoked ABR usually represented a deficit in the results of behavioral assessment of auditory processing. Thus, it can be used to obtain information about the perception of speech sounds in children under seven years or with challenging behavioral assessment.

RESUMO Objetivo: Determinar a eficácia da colocação do protetor auditivo comparando os valores de atenuação obtidos pelos métodos objetivo (MIRE) e subjetivo (REAT) em grupos com e sem treinamento. Métodos: Participaram do estudo 80 indivíduos do sexo masculino, separados em grupo pesquisa (com treinamento) e controle (sem treinamento). Os procedimentos realizados foram: anamnese e avaliações objetiva e subjetiva do protetor auditivo. Apenas os indivíduos do grupo pesquisa receberam treinamento e orientações para colocar corretamente o protetor auditivo. Resultados: Os valores de atenuação no grupo pesquisa foram maiores com diferenças estatisticamente significantes em relação ao grupo controle em todas as frequências (500, 1000, 2000 e 4000 Hz) investigadas por meio dos métodos objetivo (MIRE) e subjetivo (REAT). Além disso, os valores de atenuação no grupo controle foram menores do que as previstas pelo fabricante do protetor auditivo. Conclusão: Ambos os métodos de avaliação da atenuação (objetivo e subjetivo) demonstraram a eficácia da colocação do protetor auditivo. Entretanto, o grupo que recebeu treinamento para colocação adequada do protetor auditivo apresentou valores de atenuação maiores do que o grupo sem treinamento.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To determine the efficacy of hearing protector insertion by comparing attenuation values measured by objective (MIRE) and subjective (REAT) methods in groups with and without training. Methods: The study included 80 male subjects assigned to experimental (with training) and control (without training) groups. The following procedures were performed: occupational history, objective and subjective assessment of hearing protectors. Only subjects in the experimental group received training and guidance on proper hearing protector insertion. Results: Attenuation values were significantly higher in the experimental group than in the control group at all frequencies (500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz) investigated through the objective (MIRE) and subjective (REAT) methods. In addition, attenuation values in the control group were lower than those provided by the hearing protector manufacturer. Conclusion: Both objective and subjective attenuation tests demonstrated the efficacy of training on insertion of hearing protectors because the group that received training on proper hearing protection insertion exhibited higher attenuation values than the untrained group.

Introdução: Os músicos possuem respostas neurais mais robustas e eficientes em regiões corticais, mostrando que a experiência musical beneficia o processamento de estímulos linguísticos e não linguísticos. Objetivo: Verificar como a latência e a amplitude do P300 se comporta usando estimulação contralateral, em músicos e não músicos. Método: Estudo de caso-controle. Os indivíduos foram divididos em dois grupos: GM (grupo de músicos) com 30 músicos profissionais e GNM (grupo de não músicos) com 25 indivíduos sem experiência musical. Resultados: Os resultados mostraram que: GM teve latências menores e amplitudes maiores do que a GNM no P300 sem ruído contralateral. Para os valores de amplitude do P300, a diferença entre os grupos se manteve, e o GM apresentou valores de amplitude significativamente maiores em comparação com o GNM; e a análise do efeito do ruído sobre a resposta P300 mostrou que os valores de latência foram significativamente maiores no GM. Conclusão: Concluímos que o sistema nervoso auditivo central de músicos apresenta características peculiares de respostas eletrofisiológicas provavelmente devido à plasticidade imposta pela prática musical.

Introduction: Musicians have more robust and efficient neural responses in the cortical and sub-cortical regions, demonstrating that musical experience benefits the processing of both non-linguistic and linguistic stimuli. Objective: This study aimed to verify P300's latency and amplitude behavioral using contralateral stimulation in musicians and non-musicians. Methods: This was a case-control study. Subjects were divided in two groups: musicians, comprising 30 professional musicians, and non-musicians, comprising 25 subjects without musical experience. Results: The present study showed that the musicians had lower latencies and higher amplitudes than the non-musicians in the P300 without contralateral noise. For the P300 amplitude values, the difference between groups persisted, and the musicians presented significantly higher amplitude values compared with the non-musicians; additionally, the analysis of the noise effect on the P300 response showed that the latency values were significantly increased in the musicians. Conclusion: The central auditory nervous system of musicians presents peculiar characteristics of electrophysiological responses probably due to the plasticity imposed by musical practice.

Objetivo Caracterizar o sistema auditivo periférico de indivíduos com síndrome de Down, por meio da audiometria convencional e de altas frequências. Métodos Estudo do tipo transversal e observacional. Participaram 15 indivíduos com síndrome de Down, de ambos os gêneros, entre 7 e 15 anos de idade. Foram realizados os seguintes procedimentos: Meatoscopia, Timpanometria com pesquisa do reflexo acústico ipsilateral e contralateral, Audiometria Tonal, Audiometria Vocal e Audiometria de Altas Frequências. Resultados Houve predomínio de perda auditiva condutiva de grau leve, em uma ou ambas as orelhas. As médias dos limiares auditivos para a audiometria convencional ficaram abaixo de 20 dBNA e, para a audiometria de altas frequências, ficaram entre 20 e 40 dBNA. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson revelou correlação moderada positiva, entre os limiares de 9 a 14 kHz e a idade. Conclusão De forma geral, não foram observadas diferenças significativas, quando comparadas as orelhas direita e esquerda de indivíduos com síndrome de Down, na audiometria tonal, imitanciometria e logoaudiometria. A maioria das crianças apresentou alteração de orelha média e perda auditiva condutiva. A audiometria de altas frequências sugere o início de prejuízo da função coclear, que pode estar associado às otites médias frequentes e/ou à degeneração coclear precoce.

Purpose This study sought to characterize the peripheral auditory system of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) using conventional and high-frequency audiometry. Methods We performed a cross-sectional and observational study. Fifteen individuals with DS, who were of both genders and between 7 and 15 years of age, participated in this study. The following procedures were performed: otoscopy, tympanometry with ipsilateral and contralateral acoustic reflex, pure-tone audiometry, vocal audiometry and high-frequency audiometry. Results There was a predominance of mild conductive hearing loss in one or both ears. The mean hearing thresholds for conventional audiometry were below 20 dB HL and between 20 and 40 dB HL for high-frequency audiometry. The Pearson correlation coefficient indicated a moderate positive correlation between the 9-14 kHz thresholds and age. Conclusion Overall, no significant differences were observed when comparing the right and left ears of individuals with DS, in regards to pure-tone audiometry, immittance testing and speech audiometry. Most children showed middle ear abnormalities and conductive hearing loss. Moreover, high-frequency audiometry suggested the onset of impaired cochlear function, which may be associated with frequent otitis media episodes and/or early cochlear degeneration.

Objetivo Verificar a eficácia do Treinamento Auditivo e a manutenção das habilidades auditivas treinadas após um, dois, ou três anos do seu término, com o intuito de comprovar a eficácia do treino em longo prazo. Métodos Dez crianças com alteração do processamento auditivo - graus variando entre leve a moderado, moderado e moderado a severo - passaram por um programa de treinamento auditivo de oito semanas e foram reavaliadas imediatamente após o treino (PÓS-1) e um, dois, ou três anos depois (PÓS-2). Resultados Foram observadas diferenças significativas no desempenho médio, entre a avaliação pré-treino e as avaliações PÓS-1 e PÓS-2, sem diferenças entre as duas últimas. Não foram observadas correlações entre o intervalo de tempo entre PÓS-1 e PÓS-2 e a diferença no desempenho dessas avaliações. Em PÓS-1, a maioria das avaliações apresentou-se dentro da normalidade, ou com alterações leves do PA, sendo que 60% dos indivíduos mantiveram tais resultados em PÓS-2. Conclusão Verificamos, neste estudo, que o Treinamento Auditivo é eficaz na intervenção dos Transtornos do Processamento Auditivo e que os benefícios obtidos após o treinamento se mantêm, mesmo após um, dois, ou três anos do seu término.

Purpose The aim of the current study was to determine the efficacy of auditory training and to establish the long-term effectiveness of the acquired auditory abilities one, two or three years following the completion of the program. Methods Ten children, who presented abnormal auditory processing ranging in degree from mild-moderate, moderate, to moderate-severe, underwent an 8-week auditory training program. All participants were reassessed immediately after training (POST-1) and one, two or three years after training (POST-2). Results Significant differences were detected in average performance between the assessment made prior to auditory training (PRE) and POST-1 assessment, and between PRE and POST-2 assessments, but no significant differences were found between POST-1 and POST-2 assessments. No correlations were detected between POST-1 and POST-2 time interval, and the difference in performance between these two evaluations. The auditory processing assessments in POST-1 were considered normal, or were mildly altered. Further, 60% of the individuals achieved the same results in POST-2 assessment. Conclusion In the current study, we verified that auditory training is an effective intervention for Auditory Processing Disorders, and that the benefits obtained after training persist even after intervals of one, two or three years following intervention.

OBJETIVO: Comparar o desempenho em processamento temporal de crianças com transtorno fonológico submetidos a treino auditivo formal e informal. MÉTODOS: Quinze indivíduos com transtorno fonológico (limiares tonais ≤20 dBNA de 0,50 a 4 kHz e idades entre 7 anos e 10 anos e 11 meses) foram avaliados e divididos em três grupos: Grupo Controle - composto por cinco indivíduos (média de idade de 9,1 anos) sem transtorno do processamento auditivo, que passaram por duas avaliações do processamento auditivo (central) com intervalo de seis a oito semanas, sem receber qualquer intervenção; Grupo Treino Formal - composto por cinco indivíduos (média de idade de 8,3 anos), com transtorno do processamento auditivo, submetidos a oito sessões de treino formal; e Grupo Treino Informal - composto por cinco indivíduos (média de idade de 8,1 anos) com transtorno do processamento auditivo, submetidos a oito sessões de treino informal. RESULTADOS: Após oito sessões, o grupo treino formal apresentou melhora de 8% e o grupo treino informal de 22,5% no que se refere ao teste padrão temporal de frequência. Para o teste padrão temporal de duração, o grupo treino formal melhorou 12,9% e o grupo treino informal 18,7%. No desempenho nos testes padrão de frequência e padrão de duração, não houve diferença estatística entre as médias obtidas pelos dois grupos após a intervenção. CONCLUSÃO: Embora os resultados não tenham apresentado significância estatística, o estudo piloto apresentado sugere que ambos os treinos, formal e informal, proporcionam melhora das habilidades de processamento temporal em crianças com transtorno fonológico e do processamento auditivo.

PURPOSE: This study compared the temporal processing performance of children with phonological disorders submitted to formal and informal auditory training. METHODS: Fifteen subjects with phonological disorder (pure tone thresholds ≤20 dBHL from 0.50 to 4 kHz, and age between 7 years and 10 years and 11 months) were evaluated, divided into three groups: Control Group: five subjects (mean age 9.1 years) without auditory processing disorder, who passed through two evaluations of the auditory processing at intervals of six to eight weeks and without any intervention; Formal Training Group with five subjects (average 8.3 years) with auditory processing disorder submitted to eight sessions of formal training; and Informal Training Group, with five subjects (average 8.1 years) with auditory processing disorder submitted to eight sessions of informal training. RESULTS: After eight sessions the formal training group showed an improvement of 8% and the informal training group of 22.5% in comparison with the pitch pattern sequence test. For the duration pattern sequence test, the average of the formal training group improved by 12.9% and the informal training group by 18.7%. There was no statistical difference between the means obtained by both groups after intervention, neither in the pitch pattern nor in the duration pattern sequence test. CONCLUSION: Although the results did not present significant differences, this pilot study suggests that both formal and informal trainings provide improvement in the temporal processing abilities of children with phonological and auditory processing disorders.

INTRODUÇÃO: Atualmente, admite-se que indivíduos com alterações de leitura e escrita podem apresentar atraso no desenvolvimento das habilidades auditivas, o que pode interferir no processo de aprendizagem. A avaliação das habilidades auditivas pode ocorrer de forma comportamental, por meio dos testes do processamento auditivo central (PAC), ou por meio da avaliação eletrofisiológica, destacando-se os potenciais evocados auditivos de longa latência (PEALL). A utilização dos PEALL como meio de avaliação complementar de indivíduos com alterações de leitura e escrita pode se tornar um importante dado tanto para uma caracterização mais detalhada das alterações, como para o direcionamento terapêutico dessa população. OBJETIVO: Caracterizar o PAC e o PEALL em crianças com alterações de leitura e escrita. MÉTODO: Pesquisa aprovada pela Comissão de Ética da Instituição sob nº 305/10. A avaliação do PAC e do PEALL foi realizada em 12 crianças com idade entre oito e 12 anos (média de 10,6 anos), com alteração de leitura e escrita confirmada em avaliação específica. RESULTADOS: As habilidades do PAC mais alteradas foram ordenação temporal e figura-fundo para sons linguísticos. Foram encontrados resultados alterados no P300 e no MMN. CONCLUSÃO: Os indivíduos com alterações de leitura e escrita apresentaram desempenho abaixo do esperado em testes do PAC. O MMN possibilitou uma melhor caracterização da função auditiva desta população. Houve indícios de associação entre resultados do PAC e alteração nos PEALL.

INTRODUCTION: Presently, it is admitted that individuals with reading and writing alterations may present delay in the development of listening skills, which may interfere in the learning process. The assessment of the listening skills can occur in a behavioral way, through central auditory processing (CAP) tests, or by electrophysiological assessment highlighting the long latency auditory evoked potentials (LLAEP). The use of the LLAEP as a means of complementary assessment of individuals with reading and writing alterations can become an important data both for further characterization of the alterations, as for the therapeutic guidance of this population. OBJECTIVE: Characterize the CAP and the LLAEP in children with reading and writing alterations. METHOD: Research approved by the Institution's Ethic Commission under nº 305/10. The assessment of CAP and LLAEP was performed in 12 children aged between 8 and 12 years old (average of 10,6 years), with reading and writing alterations confirmed in specific evaluation. RESULTS: The most altered CAP skills were temporal ordination and figure-ground for linguistic sounds. There were found altered results in P300 and in MMN. CONCLUSION: The individuals with reading and writing alterations performed below the expected on CAP tests. The MMN allowed a better characterization of the auditory function of this population. There was evidence of association between the CAP results and the alteration of the LLAEP.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a efetividade de uma ação educativa de treinamento, com ênfase na importância da proteção auditiva, para trabalhadores expostos a ruído ocupacional. MÉTODOS: Participaram 78 funcionários do gênero masculino. Todos os indivíduos passaram por avaliação audiológica completa e responderam a um questionário no momento do início do atendimento. Para a segunda aplicação do questionário, os participantes foram randomicamente divididos em dois grupos: Grupo Pesquisa, constituído por 44 funcionários, que responderam ao questionário após passarem por treinamento educativo, e Grupo Controle, constituído por 34 funcionários, que responderem ao questionário antes de passar por treinamento educativo. O treinamento foi feito com base em material gráfico com figuras e textos, sob a forma de conversa. Os temas abordados foram: importância da audição, efeitos do ruído sobre a saúde, importância da prevenção da perda auditiva e da utilização do protetor auditivo, conservação e higienização dos protetores, níveis de ruído no ambiente de trabalho e atenuação do ruído fornecida pelos protetores auditivos. O questionário continha 14 perguntas de múltipla escolha que abordavam os mesmos temas explorados no treinamento educativo. RESULTADOS: Houve aumento significativo do número de acertos durante a 2ª aplicação do questionário, somente para o Grupo Pesquisa, em todas as comparações realizadas. CONCLUSÃO: Ações educativas realizadas com trabalhadores expostos a ruído ocupacional são efetivas. Além disso, o questionário é uma ferramenta estável e viável para a verificação da efetividade de programas educativos

PURPOSE: To verify the effectiveness of an educational action in the form of training, emphasizing the importance of hearing protection for workers exposed to occupational noise. METHODS: The study included 78 male individuals. All participants answered a questionnaire before they were submitted to audiological evaluation. For the second application of the questionnaire, participants were randomly divided into two groups: Research Group, constituted by 44 subjects that received educational training before the second questionnaire application, and Control Group, comprising 34 individuals that answered the questionnaire before the educational training. Training was based on material with graphic images and text, in the form of conversation. The topics covered included: the importance of hearing, noise effects on health, importance of preventing hearing loss and using hearing protection, conservation and cleaning of hearing protectors, levels of noise in the workplace and noise attenuation provided by hearing protectors. The questionnaire contained 14 multiple choice questions that addressed the same themes explored in the educational training. RESULTS: There was a significant increase of correct responses in the second application of the questionnaire, only in the Research Group, in all comparisons. CONCLUSION: Educational action performed with workers exposed to occupational noise are effective, and the questionnaire is a stable and viable tool to evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs
