Resumo: O objetivo deste artigo é analisar o impacto da renda não agrícola nas condições de infraestrutura e acesso a bens de consumo duráveis para famílias rurais do Nordeste e Sul do Brasil. Para tanto, foram utilizados microdados da Pesquisa por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD) de 2002 a 2015. A metodologia consistiu na construção de um índice de infraestrutura domiciliar e acesso a bens de consumo duráveis e na estimação de uma regressão quantílica para verificar o efeito da renda do trabalho sobre esse índice. Os resultados mostraram que as famílias que praticam atividades pluriativas e não agrícolas apresentaram rendimentos médios mais elevados, em comparação com as famílias agrícolas. No entanto, o impacto da renda nas variáveis analisadas foi maior no grupo de famílias rurais mais pobres, independentemente da atividade praticada e da região. Em outras palavras, atividades pluriativas e não agrícolas podem contribuir, em um primeiro momento, para promover mudanças significativas em um contexto de precariedade. No entanto, não conseguem gerar renda suficiente para contribuir com mudanças estruturais em famílias mais bem equipadas.

Abstract: The objective of this article is to analyze the impact of non-farm income on infrastructure conditions and access to durable consumer goods for rural families in the Northeast and South of Brazil. For this purpose, microdata from the Household Sample Survey (PNAD) from 2002 to 2015 were used. The methodology consisted of the construction of an index of household infrastructure and access to consumer durables and of the estimation of a quantile regression to verify the effect of labor income on this index. The results showed that families who practice pluriactive and nonfarm activities had higher average incomes, compared to agricultural families. However, the impact of income on the variables analyzed was greater in the group of poorer rural families, regardless of the activity practiced and the region. In other words, pluriactive and nonfarm activities can contribute, at first, to promote significant changes in a context of precariousness. However, they are unable to generate enough income to contribute to structural changes in better equipped households.

ABSTRACT. The present study aimed to correlate the influence of water quality, cultivation time, area, and density of ponds on the zootechnical performance of shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei in oligohaline waters. It was demonstrated that, under the conditions of this research, better control of temperature, pH and water alkalinity can be employed. Ammonia levels were within the normal range and correlated positively with the growth rate (ρ = 0.69859) and production (ρ = 0.66362) of the ponds. There was also a positive correlation between cultivation time and pond density with shrimp weight (ρ = 0.75305 and 0.68933) and pond productivity (ρ = 0.74763 and 0.79367, respectively). Negative correlations were observed between: I) pH with shrimp survival (ρ = -0.73238) and pond production (ρ = -0.68696); II) alkalinity and pond production (ρ = -0.66162). The results show that the cultivation of shrimp L. vannamei in oligohaline waters is viable and there is potential for increased productivity associated with better hydrological monitoring and use of higher density and cultivation time by some producers.

RESUMO A análise de Celso Furtado do subdesenvolvimento brasileiro é amplamente reconhecida por seu enfoque histórico-estrutural, enquanto seu viés analítico macroeconômico frequentemente recebe atenção diminuta. Desse modo, além de conferir ênfase a essa perspectiva de sua análise, este trabalho almeja à realização de um ensaio empírico que teste as relações entre as principais variáveis do esquema delineado pelo autor. Para tanto, utiliza-se um SVAR (Vetor Autorregressivo Estrutural) com dados da economia brasileira, de 1965 a 2015. Os resultados denotam que as inter-relações testadas se mostram consonantes com sua interpretação macroeconômica do processo de crescimento da economia brasileira no bojo do subdesenvolvimento.

ABSTRACT Celso Furtado’s analysis of Brazilian underdevelopment is widely recognized for its historical-structural approach, while his macroeconomic analytical bias often receives little attention. Considering this, in addition to giving emphasis to this perspective of his analysis, this work aims at carrying out an empirical essay which tests the relationships among the main variables of the author’s scheme. For this purpose, an SVAR (Structural Vector Auto-regressive) is used with data from Brazilian economy, from 1965 to 2015. The results show that the tested interrelations are consistent with his macroeconomic interpretation of the growth process of Brazilian economy in the boundary of underdevelopment.

Resumo: Este artigo visa investigar os fatores que contribuíram para a desigualdade de rendimentos e analisar os efeitos da segmentação ocupacional de trabalhadores brasileiros empregados em atividades agrícolas e não agrícolas, no meio rural. Foram aplicados os métodos de regressão quantílica com correção de viés de seleção amostral e a decomposição contrafactual de rendimentos por quantis, através dos microdados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios Contínua (PNAD-C) para os anos de 2012 e 2019. Os resultados mostraram que existe desigualdade de renda favorável aos trabalhadores empregados em atividades não agrícolas em relação aos designados em atividades agrícolas, sendo a diferença superior para aqueles trabalhadores com rendas mais baixas, assim como para aqueles com altos rendimentos. Confirmou-se ainda a presença da segmentação setorial, da qual a maior parcela em 2012 corresponde à dualidade do mercado de trabalho e em 2019, nos quantis inferiores, a segmentação obteve maior poder explicativo para a diferença de rendimentos entre os grupos, enquanto para os quantis superiores, a teoria do capital humano prevaleceu.

Abstract: The article aims to analyze which factors contributed to the inequality across income distribution of Brazilian workers in rural areas, occupied in agricultural and non-agricultural activities. Quantile regression with sample selection bias correction and counterfactual decomposition of income by quantiles were applied, using the microdata from the National Continuous Household Survey (PNAD-C) for the years 2012 and 2019. The results showed that there is income inequality favorable to workers occupied in non-agricultural activities concerning agricultural activities, which is intensive for those with lower incomes, as well as for those with high incomes. The presence of sectorial segmentation was also confirmed, of which the largest portion in 2012 corresponds to the labor market duality. However in 2019, in lower quantiles the segmentation obtained greater explanatory power for the difference in income between the groups, while in higher quantiles the theory of human capital prevailed.

Resumo: Os resultados do Censo Agropecuário 2017, divulgados no final de 2019 pelo IBGE, abriram os debates acerca das características e dos motivos da redução absoluta do contingente de agricultores familiares no Brasil vis-à-vis os números apresentados em 2006. Isso posto, o objetivo do presente artigo é se inserir nessa discussão e contribuir com a mesma a partir da utilização dos microdados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios – PNAD (de 2006 a 2015) para avaliar a evolução do número de produtores pertencentes à agricultura familiar no país. Os resultados da pesquisa revelaram que a pluriatividade se tornou, em virtude da aplicação dos critérios da Lei da Agricultura Familiar de 2006, um elemento potencial de impedimento de uma parte expressiva das famílias de contas próprias serem classificadas como agricultura familiar, o que contribui para a sua retração nas estatísticas oficiais. Por sua vez, ao lado da agricultura familiar que comercializa parte de sua produção, o trabalho mostra que uma parcela crescente da categoria se dedica a atividades produtivas para o próprio consumo, exigindo políticas públicas de inclusão produtiva e de desenvolvimento rural.

Abstract: The results of the 2017 Agricultural Census, released at the end of 2019 by IBGE, opened the debates about the characteristics and reasons for the absolute reduction of the contingent of family farmers in Brazil vis-à-vis the figures presented in 2006. That said, this article aims to be part of this discussion and to contribute to it from the use of microdata from the National Household Sample Survey - PNAD (from 2006 to 2015) to assess the evolution of the number of producers belonging to family farming in the country. The results of the research revealed that pluriactivity has become, due to the application of the updated criteria of the Family Agriculture Law of 2006, a potential element to prevent a significant part of self-employed families from being classified as family farmers, which contributes to reducing the number of this segment of farmers in official statistics. In turn, alongside family farming that sells part of its production, the work shows that a growing portion of the category is dedicated to productive activities for its consumption, requiring public policies for productive inclusion and rural development.

Resumo O subdesenvolvimento brasileiro, na forma como foi qualificado por Celso Furtado, evidencia natureza notadamente distributiva derivada da conexão precisa entre dependência cultural externa e exploração interna do trabalhador. Apesar do diagnóstico que data de algumas décadas, nuances da estrutura distributiva no período recente permitem o reconhecimento da relevância e atualidade dessa interpretação, de modo que a análise de informações mapeadas em uma ampla “radiografia” da distribuição de renda brasileira constituiu o objetivo deste trabalho. Procurou-se responder se o que se passou, desde o último escrito de Celso Furtado, teria modificado as condições mais fundamentais por ele descritas. De uma forma geral, as informações aqui tratadas, à luz de Furtado, sugeriram a persistência do subdesenvolvimento brasileiro, avaliado a partir das estruturais assimetrias socioeconômicas que ainda o compõem.

Abstract Brazilian underdevelopment, as qualified by Celso Furtado, shows a notably distributive nature derived from the close relationship between external cultural dependence and the internal exploitation of workers. Despite the fact that this diagnosis dates back decades, nuances of the distributive structure in recent times highlight the current relevance of this interpretation, in such a way that the analysis of information mapped in a comprehensive “radiograph” of Brazilian income distribution was the objective of this work. It aimed at answering if what has happened, since Celso Furtado's last study, would have changed the most fundamental conditions described by him. In general, the information analyzed here, according to Furtado, suggested the persistence of Brazilian underdevelopment, as assessed based on the structural socio-economic asymmetries of which it is still composed.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade econômica e a competitividade do arroz (Oryza sativa) de terras altas, em comparação ao arroz inundado, em sistema com diferentes épocas de fertilização nitrogenada e plantas de cobertura, no Sudeste do Brasil. Os tratamentos consistiram de arroz de terras altas cultivado sob palha de Urochloa brizantha ou Urochloa ruziziensis, com a seguinte fertilização: T, 30 kg ha-1 de N na semeadura do arroz + sem N extra (0 kg ha-1); C, 30 kg ha-1 de N na semeadura do arroz + 90 kg ha-1 de N no perfilhamento do arroz; A2, 30 kg ha-1 de N na semeadura do arroz + 90 kg ha-1 de N um dia antes da semeadura do arroz; e A1, 30 kg ha-1 de N na semeadura do arroz + 90 kg ha-1 de N nos plantios das plantas de cobertura. Foram determinados custo operacional total, receita bruta, lucro operacional, índice de lucratividade e preço de equilíbrio. O arroz de terras altas resulta em ganho monetário para o produtor similar ao do arroz inundado quando se adiciona nitrogênio, independentemente da época de adubação. Em condições de deficit hídrico, o arroz semeado na palhada de U. brizantha apresenta maior índice de lucratividade que o semeado na de U. ruziziensis. Quando há a possibilidade de deficit hídrico, U. brizantha, como planta de cobertura, resulta em maior segurança econômica para os produtores de arroz de terras altas.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the economic viability and competitiveness of upland rice (Oryza sativa), compared with flooded rice, in a system with different nitrogen fertilization timing and cover crops in Southeastern Brazil. The treatments consisted of upland rice grown under Urochloa brizantha or Urochloa ruziziensis straw, with the following fertilization: T, 30 kg ha-1 N at rice sowing + no extra N supply (0 kg ha-1); C, 30 kg ha-1 N at rice sowing + 90 kg ha-1 N at rice tillering; A2, 30 kg ha-1 N at rice sowing + 90 kg ha-1 N one day before rice sowing; and A1, 30 kg ha-1 N at rice sowing + 90 kg ha-1 N in the living cover crops. Total operating cost, gross revenue, operating profit, profitability index, and equilibrium price were determined. Upland rice results in a monetary gain for the farmer similar to that of flooded rice when nitrogen is added, regardless of fertilization timing. Under rainfall deficit conditions, upland rice sown on U. brizantha straw shows higher profitability rates than when sown on U. ruziziensis. When there is a possibility of rainfall deficit, U. brizantha, as a cover plant, results in a greater economic security for upland rice producers.

RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar possíveis diferenças nas concentrações de selênio no plasma e nos eritrocitos de idosos com e sem a doença de Alzheimer (DA). Métodos: Estudo transversal, realizado com idosos com DA, diagnosticados por médico geriatra, e comparado a um grupo de idosos sem a doença, pareado por sexo, escolaridade e idade. As concentrações de selênio total (Set) intraeritocitárias e plasmáticas foram determinadas por espectrofotometria de absorção atômica. Resultados A média da idade foi 74,41±7,1 anos no grupo DA e 71,46±5,1 anos no grupo-controle. O grupo doença de Alzheimer apresentou menores concentrações plasmáticas (média de 45,29±14,51 µg/dL vs. 55,14±4,01 µg/dL; p = 0,004) e eritrocitárias de Set (mediana de 56,36 µg/L vs. 76,96 µg/L; p < 0,001). O modelo de regressão logística indicou associação entre concentrações eritrocitárias de Set e o diagnóstico de doença de Alzheimer (p = 0,028). Conclusão Idosos com DA apresentam concentrações menores de selênio plasmático e eritrocitário..

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate possible differences in plasma and erythrocyte concentrations of selenium among elderly with and without a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Methods: Cross-sectional study, performed with an elderly group with Alzheimer’s disease, diagnosed by a geriatric doctor, and compared to an elderly group without the disease, equaling gender, education, and age. Atomic absorption spectrophotometry determined plasma and erythrocyte concentrations of total selenium (Set). Results: The mean age was 74.41±7.1 years in the Alzheimer’s disease group and 71.46±5.1 years among the control group. The Alzheimer’s disease group presented lower plasma concentrations (mean of 45.29±14.51 µg/dL vs. 55.14±14.01 µg/dL; p=0.004), and erythrocyte Set (median of 56.36 µg/L vs. 76.96 µg/L; p<0.001). The logistic regression model indicated an association between erythrocyte Set concentrations and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (p=0.028). Conclusion: Elderly with Alzheimer’s disease present lower selenium concentrations in the evaluated organic compartments.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Investigar posibles diferencias en las concentraciones plasmáticas y eritrocitarias de selenio entre ancianos con y sin diagnóstico de Alzheimer (DA). Métodos: Estudio transversal, realizado con un equipo de ancianos con diagnóstico de Alzheimer, diagnosticados por geriatra, y comparado a un equipo de ancianos sin la enfermedad, pareado por sexo, escolaridad y edad. Las concentraciones plasmáticas y eritrocitarias de selenio total (Set) determinadas por espectrofotometría de absorción atómica. Resultados: La mediana de edad han sido 74,41±7,1 años en el equipo diagnóstico de Alzheimer y 71,46±5,1 años en el equipo-control. El equipo diagnóstico de Alzheimer presentó menores concentraciones plasmáticas (mediana de 45,29±14,51 µg/dL vs. 55,14±4,01 µg/dL; p = 0,004) y eritrocitarias de Set (mediana de 56,36 µg/L vs. 76,96 µg/L; p < 0,001). El modelo de regresión logística indicó relación entre concentraciones eritrocitarias de Set y el diagnóstico de diagnóstico de Alzheimer (p = 0,028). Conclusión Ancianos con diagnóstico de Alzheimer presentan menores concentraciones de selenio en los compartimentos orgánicos evaluados.

Resumo O artigo analisa a dinâmica do emprego e renda das famílias rurais na Região Norte, segundo uma tipologia com base na ocupação dos membros familiares em atividades agropecuárias e não agropecuárias. As análises baseiam-se em dados da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios (PNAD) para o período de 2004 a 2015. A hipótese do trabalho é que as atividades não agropecuárias têm ganhado importância na geração de ocupação e renda para as famílias rurais, reproduzindo o comportamento observado anteriormente em outros países e também nas regiões brasileiras mais desenvolvidas. Os resultados destacam que, ao contrário do êxodo rural observado nas demais regiões do país, o número de famílias rurais cresceu na Região Norte, e esse crescimento foi sustentado pela expansão das atividades não agropecuárias. Com isso, a renda familiar passa a ser composta mais fortemente pelos rendimentos provenientes das fontes não agropecuárias, além da renda proveniente do não trabalho (aposentadorias e pensões, transferências de renda, dentre outras), sobretudo os agricultores familiares por conta própria. A discussão final destaca a importância das atividades não agropecuárias para o direcionamento de políticas públicas de aumento da renda nas áreas rurais menos desenvolvidas da região.

Abstract This paper analyzes the employment and income dynamics of rural families in Brazil's North Region, the main representative of the Brazilian Amazon. We use information from the National Household Sample Survey between 2004 and 2015 to create a typology of families based on the members' occupation in agricultural and non-agricultural activities. We hypothesize that the recent increase in employment and income was strongly associated with non-agricultural activities, reproducing the dynamics observed in other developing countries and Brazil's more developed regions. The results highlight that, differently from the rural exodus observed in the other regions of the country, the number of rural households increased in the North Region, attracted by the expanding non-agricultural occupations. As a result, the importance of earnings from non-agricultural activities and non-labor (pensions, cash transfers, among others) to family income has increased considerably, especially among self-employed family farmers. The final discussion highlights the relevance of non-agricultural activities for public policies to increase income in less developed rural areas.

ABSTRACT: In patients who need endodontic re-treatment, and where the prognosis for surgical or non-surgical re-treatment is poor or treatment may be risky, one alternative is to opt for extraction of the affected tooth and replacement by an implant. However treatment by intentional reimplantation (IR) is also a possibility. The object of the present study was to present a case of a patient aged 71 years who needed endodontic re-treatment, where IR treatment was selected. The patient reported spontaneous pain which disappeared completely with the use of analgesics. This tooth had previously been treated endodontically around 1 year earlier, and no pain was reported in the first two months after treatment.Nonetheless, about 3 months before the present consultation, intensity of the symptoms had increased with a sensation of pressure in the apical-coronal direction. Cone-beam computerised tomography (CBCT) showed a periapical lesion in tooth 3.7. Based on the clinical and imaging examinations, acute apical periodontitis was diagnosed in tooth 3.7.The tooth was treated by IR. It was carefully extracted and inspected for cracks or perforations. It was treated under the microscope with root resection, and then retrograde obturation was carried out with bioceramic material. The tooth was then repositioned in its alveolus. It was immobilised for 15 days, after which the patient could return gradually to normal masticatory function. In the 6 months check-up the patient presented no pain or sensitivity to percussion. No root resorption or periapical radiolucency was observed in the periapical X-ray. We conclude that IR is an alternative to extraction followed or not by prosthetic treatment, for patients who need endodontic re-treatment. The treatment presents good levels of success, and of acceptance by the patient.

RESUMEN: En pacientes que necesitan de retratamiento endodóntico y el retratamiento quirúrgico o no quirúrgico tiene un pronóstico desfavorable o puede ser riesgoso, se puede optar por la extracción del diente afectado y su reemplazo por implante o se puede elegir el tratamiento mediante la técnica de reimplante intencional (RI). El objetivo del presente estudio fue presentar un caso de paciente de 71 años con necesidad de retratamiento endodóntico, donde se optó por la realización del RI. Paciente relatava dolor espontáneo que desaparecia completamente con el uso de analgésicos. Este diente ya había sido tratado endodónticamente hace alrededor de 1 año, y el paciente noreportó dolor en los primeros dos meses después del tratamiento.No obstante, hace aproximadamente 3 meses la intensidad de los síntomas aumentó, junto con la sensación de presión en el sentido ápice-corona. La tomografía computarizada cone-beam (TCCB) mostró lesión periapical en el diente 3.7. Basado en el examen clínico e imagenológico se diagnosticó periodontitis apical aguda en el diente 3.7.Para el tratamiento se realizó la técnica de RI, siendo extraído el diente cuidadosamente, e inspeccionado a fin de localizar fisuras o perforaciones. El diente fue tratado bajo microscopio y se realizó la resección de la raíz. Se realizó la obturación retrógrada con material biocerámico. Enseguida el diente fue reposicionado en su alveolo, la inmovilización fue realizada durante 15 días y la paciente logró retornar gradualmente a su función masticatoria. En el seguimiento de 6 meses la paciente no presentó dolor o sensibilidad a la percusión. En la radiografía periapical no se observó resorción radicular o radiolucencia periapical. Concluimos que el RI en pacientes que necesitan retratamiento endodóntico es una alternativa a la realización de la exodoncia seguida o no, de tratamiento protético, donde existe una buena aceptación por parte del paciente y éxito en el tratamiento.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar efeitos de um protocolo misto de exercícios físicos sobre o risco cardiovascular (RCV), qualidade de vida e presença de sintomas depressivos em idosos hipertensos. Estudo longitudinal, prospectivo e quase-experimental com 48 idosos. Desenvolveu-se um protocolo de exercícios físicos durante 16 semanas, segundo American College Sports of Medicine e foram realizadas avaliações antropométricas (peso, estatura, índice de massa corporal e circunferência da cintura) e bioquímicas (colesterol total, LDL-c, HDL-c; triglicerídeos). A média de idade foi de 66,5±4,8 anos. Os fatores de RCV frequentes foram dislipidemia (58,3%) e sedentarismo (45,8%). Após intervenção houve redução dos valores médios de colesterol total e LDL-colesterol e aumentaram níveis de HDL-colesterol. O RCV e a pontuação do escore de risco global diminuíram significativamente. A frequência de sintomas depressivos reduziu de 25% para 4,2%. Observou-se melhora nos domínios do SF-36: físico, saúde e vitalidade. O protocolo misto de exercícios físicos constituiu-se em alternativa possível, de baixo custo e eficaz na melhora do perfil lipídico e da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde dos idosos desta pesquisa.

Abstract The scope of this article is to evaluate the effects of a mixed protocol of physical exercises on cardiovascular risk (CVR), quality of life and the presence of depressive symptoms in elderly hypertensive patients. It involved a longitudinal, prospective and quasi-experimental study with 48 elderly individuals. A physical exercise protocol was developed for 16 weeks according to American College of Sports Medicine, and anthropometric variables (weight, height, body mass index and waist circumference), as well as biochemical variables (total cholesterol, LDL-c, HDL-c; triglycerides) were evaluated. The mean age was 66.5±4.8 years. The frequent CVR factors were dyslipidemia (58.3%) and sedentary lifestyle (45.8%). After intervention, there was a reduction in mean values of total and LDL-cholesterol and increased HDL-cholesterol levels. The CVR and global risk score decreased significantly. The frequency of depressive symptoms decreased from 25% to 4.2%. An improvement was observed in SF-36 physical, health and vitality domains. The mixed protocol of physical exercises constituted a possible low cost and effective alternative in the improvement of the lipid profile and the quality of life related to the health of the elderly who participated in this research.

Resumo Racional A colite de desuso é frequente em nosso meio e o tratamento de maior eficácia é de alto custo, havendo necessidade de se encontrar uma terapêutica eficaz e de baixo custo. Objetivo Avaliar a eficácia da Baccharis dracunculifolia (alecrim-do-campo) no tratamento da colite de exclusão em ratos. Método Utilizou-se 18 ratos Wistar, os quais foram anestesiados e submetidos à colostomia; em seguida distribuídos em 2 grupos: Grupo Controle, recebendo infusão intrarretal de solução salina (n = 8) e Grupo BD, recebendo infusão intrarretal de extrato de Baccharis dracunculifolia (n = 10); após 21 dias de tratamento foram submetidos a eutanásia, o segmento intesinal excluso de trânsito intestinal foi ressecado e submetido a estudo histopatológico classificando-se o grau de inflamação e grau de congestão vascular de 0 a 3. Resultados Verificou-se média de inflamação 2,7 no Grupo Controle vs. 2,1 no Grupo BD (p = 0,049), enquanto as médias de congestão vascular foram 2,3 e 2, respectivamente, nos grupos controle e BD (p = 0,1642). Conclusão A infusão intrarretal do extrato de Baccharis dracunculifolia minimizou significantemente o processo inflamatório na colite de exclusão de ratos submetidos à colostomia, sem alterar o grau de congestão vascular.

Abstract Rationale Disuse colitis is frequent in our country and the most effective treatment is high cost and there is a need for effective and low cost therapy. Objective To evaluate the efficacy of Baccharis dracunculifolia (field rosemary) in the treatment of exclusion colitis in rats. Method Eighteen Wistar rats were anesthetized and submitted to colostomy; they were then distributed into two groups: Control Group, receiving intrarectal saline infusion (n = 8) and Group BD receiving intrarectal infusion ofBaccharis dracunculifolia extract (n = 10); after 21 days of treatment they were euthanized, the intestinal segment excluded from intestinal transit was resected and submitted to histopathological study, classifying the degree of inflammation and degree of vascular congestion from 0 to 3. Results Mean inflammation was 2.7 in Control Group versus 2.1 in BD Group (p = 0.049), while mean vascular congestion was 2.3 and 2, respectively, in Control and BD groups (p = 0.1642). Conclusion Intra-rectal infusion ofBaccharis dracunculifolia extract significantly minimized the inflammatory process in the exclusion colitis of rats submitted to colostomy, without altering the degree of vascular congestion.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é avaliar efeitos de um protocolo misto de exercícios físicos sobre o risco cardiovascular (RCV), qualidade de vida e presença de sintomas depressivos em idosos hipertensos. Estudo longitudinal, prospectivo e quase-experimental com 48 idosos. Desenvolveu-se um protocolo de exercícios físicos durante 16 semanas, segundo American College Sports of Medicine e foram realizadas avaliações antropométricas (peso, estatura, índice de massa corporal e circunferência da cintura) e bioquímicas (colesterol total, LDL-c, HDL-c; triglicerídeos). A média de idade foi de 66,5±4,8 anos. Os fatores de RCV frequentes foram dislipidemia (58,3%) e sedentarismo (45,8%). Após intervenção houve redução dos valores médios de colesterol total e LDL-colesterol e aumentaram níveis de HDL-colesterol. O RCV e a pontuação do escore de risco global diminuíram significativamente. A frequência de sintomas depressivos reduziu de 25% para 4,2%. Observou-se melhora nos domínios do SF-36: físico, saúde e vitalidade. O protocolo misto de exercícios físicos constituiu-se em alternativa possível, de baixo custo e eficaz na melhora do perfil lipídico e da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde dos idosos desta pesquisa.

Abstract The scope of this article is to evaluate the effects of a mixed protocol of physical exercises on cardiovascular risk (CVR), quality of life and the presence of depressive symptoms in elderly hypertensive patients. It involved a longitudinal, prospective and quasi-experimental study with 48 elderly individuals. A physical exercise protocol was developed for 16 weeks according to American College of Sports Medicine, and anthropometric variables (weight, height, body mass index and waist circumference), as well as biochemical variables (total cholesterol, LDL-c, HDL-c; triglycerides) were evaluated. The mean age was 66.5±4.8 years. The frequent CVR factors were dyslipidemia (58.3%) and sedentary lifestyle (45.8%). After intervention, there was a reduction in mean values of total and LDL-cholesterol and increased HDL-cholesterol levels. The CVR and global risk score decreased significantly. The frequency of depressive symptoms decreased from 25% to 4.2%. An improvement was observed in SF-36 physical, health and vitality domains. The mixed protocol of physical exercises constituted a possible low cost and effective alternative in the improvement of the lipid profile and the quality of life related to the health of the elderly who participated in this research.

Abstract Transvaginal follicular aspiration technique together with in vitro embryo production are the biotechnological alternatives currently available to support genetic improvement breeding programs in buffalo species. However, aspects related to animal management, lack of knowledge of the metabolic needs and biochemical peculiarities of gametes and embryos, as well as the reproductive physiology characteristics have hampered progress in the results. Despite the low availability of good quality oocytes collected after OPU in donors as a physiological characteristic of buffalo species, high rates of oocyte maturation, modest embryo cleavage, blastocyst production and pregnancy rates after transvaginal embryo transfer in recipients could be obtained in buffalo in vitro embryo production programs. The results of implementing an in vitro embryo production program in buffaloes in the northern region of Pará state, Brazil, and results published by other groups demonstrate the feasibility of implementing this biotechnology in the routine of breeding programs. Nevertheless, in order to achieve better and consistent results, it is necessary to deepen the knowledge on the peculiarities of reproductive biology in this specie. Selection of donor animals based on ovarian size and ovarian follicular reserve and on the rate of blastocyst production is presented as an effective alternative to increase the efficiency of the in vitro embryo production technique applied to the buffalo species.

Resumo Este trabalho apresenta uma nova abordagem analítica para a solução de problemas de dispersão de poluentes ao longo de corpos hídricos com contornos irregulares. Nesta abordagem, a equação advectivo-difusiva é expressa em termos de coordenadas curvilíneas ortogonais que são definidas pelo potencial de velocidade e pela função de corrente correspondente para fluídos invíscivos. A condição de contorno reescrita em termos destas novas coordenadas é reduzida a uma de terceira espécie clássica, isto é, a derivada da distribuição de concentração em relação à função de corrente é proporcional ao valor numérico da concentração de poluente local. A solução obtida a partir da formulação proposta foi empregada para simular dispersão de poluentes (coliformes termotolerantes) ao longo do Arroio Pampa, afluente do rio dos Sinos, na periferia de Novo Hamburgo, cidade do sul do Brazil. Os resultados obtidos reproduzem o comportamento qualitativo da distribuição de concentração esperada.

Abstract This work presents a new analytical approach for solving pollutant dispersion problems along irregular-shaped water bodies. In this approach, the advection-diffusion equation is expressed in terms of orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, defined by the velocity potential and the corresponding stream function for inviscid flows. The boundary condition rewritten in terms of these new coordinates is reduced to a classical third kind one, i.e., the derivative of the concentration distribution with respect to the stream function is proportional to the numerical value of the local pollutant concentration. The solution obtained from the proposed formulation was employed to simulate pollutant dispersion (thermotolerant coliforms) along the Pampa Creek, a tributary of the Sinos River at the outskirts of Novo Hamburgo city, South Region of Brazil. The results obtained reproduce the qualitative behavior of the expected concentration distribution.
