Abstract This study aimed to select recombinant lines and explore phenotypic and genotypic correlations using BLUP. It was conducted in Capão do Leão/RS during two years, in an incomplete block design with intercalary controls, with four replications. 131 and 128 RILs were tested in the F6 in the F7 generations, respectively. Plant height; days to flowering; panicle length; number of panicles per plant; number of fertile and sterile spikelets per panicle; one hundred grains weight; yield per plant; broken, chalky, white-belly and red-streaked grains; vitreous whiteness; gelatinization temperature; and apparent amylose content were obtained. According to the study, line F105 is an elite line for improving grain quality, exhibiting high amylose content (27.041%). Canonical (r=0.817), phenotypic (0.541) and genotypic (0.808) correlations inferred that groups of grain quality and agronomic traits were not independent and there was a tendency for the amylose content to be associated with grain yield. RESUMO: Estresses abióticos como calor, seca e salinidade afetam o desenvolvimento da cultura do trigo e dificulta a sua expansão para a região central do Brasil. A identificação de genótipos tolerantes a estas condições são importantes para o melhoramento genético da cultura. Logo, objetivou-se avaliar o impacto de diferentes estresses abióticos sobre parâmetros de germinação e do desenvolvimento de plântulas de trigo via análise multi-trait. Estresses térmico por calor, seca e salinidade foram induzidos em sementes de 23 genótipos de trigo. Foram avaliados a germinação das sementes, comprimento e massa seca da plântula. Foram aplicados sobre os dados, modelo de adaptabilidade e estabilidade e índice de seleção multi-trait. Os ambientes de estresse abiótico por seca e salinidade afetaram negativamente o desenvolvimento das plântulas dos 23 genótipos avaliados. Contudo, os genótipos VI 14055, ORS Madre Pérola e BRS 404 combinam os melhores resultados de adaptabilidade e estabilidade e foram selecionados pelo MGIDI. ABSTRACT: Abiotic stresses, such as heat, drought and salinity, affect the development of wheat crop and hinder its expansion to the central region of Brazil. The identification of genotypes tolerant to these conditions is important for improving yield performance. The present research evaluated the impact of different abiotic stresses on germination and seedling development and selected wheat genotypes tolerant to these stresses, using multi-trait analysis. Heat, drought and salinity stresses were induced in seeds of 23 wheat genotypes. Seed germination, seedling length and dry mass were evaluated. An adaptability and stability model and a multi-trait selection index were applied to the data. Drought and salinity negatively affected the development of seedlings of the 23 evaluated genotypes. However, the VI 14055, ORS Madre Pérola and BRS 404 genotypes conferred the best adaptability and stability results and were selected by the MGIDI, which revealed that great performance can be achieved in regions with potential for abiotic stress, in the early stages of development. Abstract In many cases, traditional analysis of breeding trials based on analysis of variance (ANOVA) do not allow a suitable genetic evaluation. Alternatively, mixed model-based approaches create the possibility of dealing with unbalanced data and modeling spatial trends. The aims of this study were to compare the goodness-of-fit of the model and the genotype ranking through different residual modeling approaches and to select the best performing tropical wheat genotypes based on the best-fitting model. RESUMO: As análises de correlações canônicas baseadas nas correlações genotípicas, permitem determinar associações entre grupos de caracteres e realizar a seleção direta ou indireta de genótipos superiores. Objetivou-se com este trabalho investigar a existência de relações lineares e multivariadas entre caracteres de alta e baixa herdabilidade via análise de correlações canônicas com base nas correlações genotípicas. O experimento foi conduzido no Campo Experimental Professor Diogo Alves de Melo da Universidade Federal de Viçosa, em Viçosa, Minas Gerais. 90 cultivares de trigo foram avaliadas sob o delineamento alpha-lattice 9 × 10, com três repetições e parcelas constituídas por quatro linhas de três metros espaçadas a 0.20 metros. Os grupos canônicos foram estabelecidos entre altura de espiga e planta, dias para o espigamento, número de espiguetas por espiga e número de grãos por espiga (Grupo I) e, peso de espiga, massa de grãos da espiga, massa de 100 grãos, peso hectolitro e produtividade de grãos (Grupo II). Houve dependência entre os grupos estabelecidos, o que permitiu a investigação das relações entre os caracteres com base em seus valores genotípicos. Os caracteres ciclo e altura de plantas podem ser utilizados para a seleção indireta de genótipos superiores em peso hectolitro e produtividade, fatores estes importantes para indústrias e produtores.

ABSTRACT: Canonical correlation analysis based on genotypic correlations allows determining the associations between groups of traits and carrying out the direct or indirect selection of superior genotypes. This study investigated the existence of linear and multivariate relationships between high and low heritability traits via canonical correlation analysis based on genotypic correlations. The experiment was conducted at the Professor Diogo Alves de Melo Experimental Field at the Universidade Federal de Viçosa, in Viçosa, MG. 90 wheat cultivars were evaluated under a 9 × 10 alpha-lattice design, with three replications and plots consisting of four rows of three meters spaced at 0.20 meters. Canonical groups were established between spike height and plant height, days for heading, number of spikelets per spike, and number of grains per spike (Group I) and, spike weight, spike grain mass, 100-grain mass, hectoliter weight, and grain yield (Group II). There was dependence between the established groups, which allowed the investigation of the relationships between traits based on their genotypic values. The traits cycle and plant height can be used for indirect selection of genotypes superior in hectoliter weight and grain yield, which are important factors for industries and farmers.

ABSTRACT A large set of variables is assessed for progeny selection in a plant-breeding program and other agronomic fields. The meta-analysis of the coefficient of variation (CVe) produces information for researchers and breeders on the experimental quality of trials. This analysis can also be applied in the decision-making process of the experimental plan regarding the experimental design, the number of repetitions, and the treatments and plants/progenies to be measured. In this study, we evaluated the dataset distribution and the descriptive statistics of CVe through the Frequentist and Bayesian approaches, aiming to establish the credibility and confidence intervals. We submitted CVe data of ten wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) traits reported in 1,068 articles published to the Bayesian and Frequentist analyses. Sample data were analyzed via Gamma and normal models. We selected the model with the lowest Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) value, and then we tested three link functions. In the Bayesian analysis, uniform distributions were used as non-informative priors for the Gamma distribution parameters with three ranges of q~U (a,b,). Thus, the prior probability density function was given by: p θ = 1 β - α , θ ∈ α , β . The Bayesian and Frequentist approaches with the Gamma model presented similar results for CVe; however, the range Bayesian credible intervals was narrower than the Frequentist confidence intervals. Gamma distribution fitted the CVe data better than the normal distribution. The credible and confidence intervals of CVe were successfully applied to wheat traits and could be used as experimental accuracy measurements in other experiments.

RESUMO: O processo de desenvolvimento de uma nova cultivar de trigo requer tempo entre a obtenção da população base e a seleção da linhagem mais promissora. Estimar parâmetros genéticos com mais precisão nas primeiras gerações com vistas a antecipar a seleção significa avanços importantes para os programas de melhoramento de trigo. Assim, o presente estudo estima os parâmetros genéticos de populações F2 de trigo tropical e o ganho genético da seleção via abordagem Bayesiana. Para tanto, os autores avaliaram a produtividade de grãos por parcela de 34 populações F2 de trigo tropical. A abordagem Bayesiana proporcionou um ajuste adequado ao modelo, estimando parâmetros genéticos dentro do espaço paramétrico. A herdabilidade (h2) foi de 0,51. Dentre as selecionadas, 11 populações F2 obtiveram desempenho superior às cultivares controle, com ganho genético de seleção de 7,80%. As seguintes populações foram as mais promissoras: Tbio Sossego/CD 1303, CD 1303/Tbio Ponteiro, BRS 254/CD 1303, Tbio Duque/Tbio Aton e Tbio Aton/CD 1303. A inferência Bayesiana pode ser usada para melhorar significativamente programas de melhoramento de trigo tropical.

ABSTRACT: The development process of a new wheat cultivar requires time between obtaining the base population and selecting the most promising line. Estimating genetic parameters more accurately in early generations with a view to anticipating selection means important advances for wheat breeding programs. Thus, the present study estimated the genetic parameters of F2 populations of tropical wheat and the genetic gain from selection via the Bayesian approach. To this end, the authors assessed the grain yield per plot of 34 F2 populations of tropical wheat. The Bayesian approach provided an adequate fit to the model, estimating genetic parameters within the parametric space. Heritability (h2) was 0.51. Among those selected, 11 F2 populations performed better than the control cultivars, with genetic gain of 7.80%. The following populations were the most promising: TbioSossego/CD 1303, CD 1303/TbioPonteiro, BRS 254/CD 1303, Tbio Duque/Tbio Aton, and Tbio Aton/CD 1303. ABSTRACT The immediate need for the increase in wheat production to meet the future world demand, associated with the occurrence of drastic climatic events, such as drought, makes it necessary to develop drought-resilient genotypes. The aims of this work were to evaluate the use of drought-tolerance indices for the selection of wheat genotypes, to compare the genetic gains in grain yield using different selection strategies by means of a multi-trait index, and to select superior drought-tolerant wheat genotypes. The total of 31 tropical wheat lines was evaluated in two experiments. Five agronomic traits were accessed. The grain yield data from the stress and nonstress experiments were used to obtain five drought-tolerance indices. The data were subjected to mixed model analysis, and four selection scenarios were designed. There was a significant effect of genotype for all traits. The inclusion of drought-tolerance indices in the selection index provided superior genetic gains in drought condition. Seven lines were selected due the high frequency of favorable alleles for drought-tolerance and other important agronomic traits. Drought-tolerance indices are appropriate for characterizing the response of wheat genotypes to drought-stress. Abstract A peach breeding program started in 1963, at the Experiment Station of Pelotas, nowadays Embrapa Clima Temperado, whose primary aim was developing cultivars adapted to mild winter conditions. Its first priority was to obtain cultivars of canning type fruits, and over the years, the fresh market cultivars acquired equal importance. This article analyzes the data of 84 fresh market cultivars, obtained in Pelotas, from 1964 to 2017, focusing on the following parameters: time of ripening, fruit development period, average fruit mass, number of fruits per tree, productivity per plant and total soluble solids. First, the data were tabulated, divided into two periods (1964-1984 and 1985-2017), and the descriptive statistical analysis was performed, followed by an analysis via mixed models and estimates of genetic progress via meta-analysis. The main results revealed a reduced fruit development period of the fresh market peaches belonging to that program. It was also observed a significant spread of the time of ripening (end of September or beginning of October until January), with a slight tendency for earliness. Resumo Em 1963, começou na Estação Experimental de Pelotas, hoje Embrapa Clima Temperado, um programa de melhoramento de pessegueiro cujo objetivo fundamental era desenvolver cultivares adaptadas a condições de inverno ameno. Inicialmente, a prioridade era a obtenção de cultivares produtoras de frutos para enlatamento, mas, ao longo dos anos, cultivares para o mercado fresco adquiriram a mesma importância. Este artigo analisa dados de 84 cultivares, tipo mesa, desenvolvidos em Pelotas, de 1964 a 2017, focando nos seguintes parâmetros: época de maturação, período de desenvolvimento do fruto, massa média dos frutos, número de frutos por planta, produção por planta e conteúdo de sólidos solúveis das frutas. Inicialmente, os dados foram tabulados, divididos em dois períodos (1964-1984 e 1985-2017), sendo então realizada a análise estatística descritiva, seguida por uma análise de modelos mistos e estimativa do progresso genético via meta-análise. ABSTRACT The flaxseed is little explored under Brazilian cultivation conditions, generating a gap in information about the appropriate management of the crop, in the country. Hence, the objective was to find the appropriate dose of nitrogen for the development of the variables: technical length, yield length, main stem diameter, number of grains per pod, plant grain yield, and plant dry mass of two flaxseed varieties, brown and golden, in places with subtropical and tropical climate in Brazil. The treatments consisted of a two-factor 2 x 6 experiment, consisting of two flax varieties (brown and golden) and six nitrogen doses (0; 30; 60; 90; 120 and 150 kg ha-1), in randomized blocks with four repetitions and three different environments: Santa Maria and Frederico Westphalen, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and Viçosa, in the state of Minas Gerais. The brown variety obtained greater technical and yield length compared to the golden variety, on the other hand, the golden variety showed a higher number of grains per capsule and higher plant grain yield compared to the brown variety, in the three environments. The plant dry mass increased linearly and proportionally to the increase in nitrogen doses in Santa Maria and Frederico Westphalen environments. Therefore, flaxseed responds differently to nitrogen supplementation according to the cultivation environment, showing wide variability. Abstract The selection of parents to originate promising base populations, as well as the knowledge of the gene effects controlling agronomic traits by means of diallel, are useful to drive genetic gains in Brazilian tropical wheat breeding programs. The goals of this study were to select tropical wheat parents with a high frequency of favorable alleles and segregating populations with high potential to originate superior progenies through partial diallel analysis. Thus, 14 parents were divided in two groups and crossed in a 7 × 7 partial diallel scheme to originate 49 F1 combinations. After obtaining F2 generation, the populations and the parents were evaluated in the field in the summer of 2021. Days for heading, plant height, rust and yellow spot resistance, and grain yield were evaluated. The data were subjected to partial diallel analysis. There were significant effects of general combining ability for all traits. The specific combining ability effect was significant for days for heading and plant height. RESUMEN La selección de poblaciones segregantes con potencial para derivar líneas es esencial para los programas de mejoramiento. El presente trabajo presenta el potencial de las poblaciones tropicales de trigo F2 (Triticum aestivum L.) generadas a partir de combinaciones de cruces dialélicos completos. Para ello, se combinaron ocho cultivares de trigo tropical en un diseño dialélico completo en 2019 después de multiplicar semillas Fj en invernadero y se evaluaron en campo las semillas de 56 poblaciones F2, más los ocho progenitores, en la cosecha de invierno de 2020 en un diseño reticular simple (8x8) en Vicosa, MG, Brasil. Se evaluaron las variables: severidad de la mancha amarilla (Pyrenophora triticirepentis), severidad del tizón (WHB) (Magnaporthe oryzae pathotype Triticum), número de días hasta embuchamiento, altura de la espiga y peso total de grano en la parcela. El análisis dialélico se realizó utilizando modelos mixtos para obtener los efectos de capacidad combinatoria general (GCA), capacidad combinatoria específica (SCA) y estimación de valores genotípicos de la población. El efecto aditivo predominó para el control de todas las variables, excepto para la altura de la espiga. Hubo mayores efectos de GCA para el conjunto de plantas madres progenitoras. La he-redabilidad, en sentido estricto, osciló entre 0.20 (tizón) y 0.66 (embuchamiento). Hubo efecto de la CGA materna para todas las variables, mientras que para la CGA paterna solo para número de días hasta embuchamiento y peso total de grano en la parcela. Las poblaciones derivadas de los cultivares TBIO Aton, TBIO Ponteiro y TBIO Sossego presentaron menor severidad de la enfermedad, mientras que las combinaciones de BRS 254, BRS 264 y BRS 394 presentaron un tiempo de maduración más temprano. ABSTRACT The selection of segregating populations with the potential for derived lines is essential for breeding programs. The present work analyzes the potential of tropical F2 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) populations originated from complete diallel cross combinations. For this purpose, eight tropical wheat cultivars were combined in a complete diallel design in 2019 after Fj seeds were multiplied in a greenhouse and the seeds of 56 F2 populations, plus the eight parents, were evaluated in the field in Vicosa, MG, Brazil in the winter harvest of 2020 using a simple lattice design (8x8). The trait scores of (1) severity of tan spot (Pyrenophora triticirepentis), (2) severity of wheat head blast (WHB) (Magnaporthe oryzae pathotype Triticum), (3) days to heading, (4) spike height, (5) and total grain weight of the plot were evaluated. We performed a diallel analysis using mixed models to obtain the effects of general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA), and estimation of population genotypic values. The additive effect predominated for the control of all traits, except for spike height. There were greater GCA effects for the set of parental maternal plants. Heritability, in the narrow sense, ranged from 0.20 (blast) to 0.66 (heading). There was an effect of maternal GCA for all variables, while for paternal GCA the effect was only for days passed for head and total grain weight. Populations derived from the cultivars TBIO Aton, TBIO Ponteiro, and TBIO Sossego had lower disease severity, while the combinations from BRS 254, BRS 264, and BRS 394 had earlier maturation time. The most promising combinations to derive lines for the set of traits were BRS 254 x CD 1303, BRS 394 x TBIO Aton, TBIO Aton x BRS 254, CD 1303 x BRS 254, and CD 1303 x BRS 264.

ABSTRACT. Coffee outturn can be defined as the ratio between the harvested coffee and its respective processed grains. This character is greatly influenced by genotypic and environmental effects, and in breeding programs your analysis is costly and time-consuming. In this sense, the use of an outturn index to estimate coffee yield on experimental plots is a desirable measure aiming at reducing resources and time in postharvest evaluations. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the use of an outturn index equal to 4.0, in the estimation of Conilon coffee grains production. This index indicates that four kilograms of harvested fruit would be needed to obtain one kilogram of processed grains. Based on the average of 157 genotypes conducted in three trials and four harvests, we evaluated the relationship between harvested fruits and processed grains (FcBe), the observed (OGY), and the estimated grain yield per plant (EGY) based on FcBe equal to 4.0 (an outturn index). Descriptive statistics, adequation test for EGY, and the coincidence of occurrence of genotypes observations relating to the top 20% of all observations of OGY and EGY. In the estimation of grain yield in Conilon, the use of FcBe equal to 4.0 showed high precision in the average of the analyzed trials. However, further studies should be conducted to elucidate the effects of climate variables on the yield of Conilon coffee, especially in atypical crop years. Thus, the use of an outturn index becomes interesting in cases where the number of genotypes to be evaluated is very large and a screening of the promising ones is desirable.

Abstract The improvement of superior wheat cultivars depends on the identification of promising segregating populations to derive superior lines. A lattice model (8×8) involving 56 F2 populations and eight parents was conducted in the 2020 cropping season, and grain yield per plant was evaluated for every F2 population, with further analysis of the population potential by Jinks and Pooni method via REML/BLUP. A total of 5,410 F2 plants were evaluated in this study. The results showed that the use of genetic variance associated with the individual genotypic value (BLUP) was superior compared with the use of variance and traditional phenotypic values. The F2 populations, CD 1303/BRS 254, CD 1303/Tbio Duque, CD 1303/Tbio Ponteiro, BRS 264/Tbio Aton, Tbio Ponteiro/Tbio Aton, and Tbio Sossego/CD 1303 had the highest likelihood of deriving superior lines.
