Abstract Purpose This study aims to analyze the challenges startups face in implementing business models for sustainability. In particular, the research question of this study is: How do the challenges faced by startups affect business models for sustainability in the context of an emerging country? Design/methodology/approach Startups are increasingly incorporating ways to thrive in a competitive environment with innovative sustainable business models, a key factor for competitive advantage and corporate sustainability. This paper analyses startups’ challenges in adopting business models for sustainability through a case study in two startups, using the sustainable value exchange matrix (SVEM) tool through workshops, to carry out the diagnosis of these challenges. Findings The barriers and challenges of business models for sustainability in startups were found in different categories, where the main barriers are linked to the institutional category, the organizational and the market and sales culture. Thus, the authors concluded that there is a need to reformulate public policies and to have greater participation of the actors involved. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of the research is the number of case studies (only two), which makes it difficult to generalize the results. Practical implications The research presents two major contributions. First, through the case studies, it is possible to verify that the barriers and challenges in business models for sustainability have relevance for startups. The second contribution is the adaptation of SVEM in conducting the debate by incorporating the barriers and challenges in value creation and delivery system. Social implications This study contributes to the business models for sustainability literature to better understand the challenges startups face in practice and can serve as insights to help overcome them. As this is an empirical study, the information gathered can help create metrics and public policies to achieve the United Nations sustainable development goals. Originality/value The present research has as originality the analysis of the challenges in startups in implementing business models for sustainability and their relationships with the value proposition, capture and creation, as well as and delivery (adapted to the challenges found in the literature) applying the SVEM tool proposed by Morioka et al. (2018).

Resumo O presente estudo discute a incorporação do conceito de sustentabilidade corporativa à literatura de sistemas de mensuração de desempenho (SMD), resultando na investigação de publicações sobre SMD de sustentabilidade (SMDS). Este estudo apresenta uma visão geral da literatura sobre SMDS, sintetizando as principais contribuições e apontando as principais tendências e lacunas nessa área de conhecimento. O método de pesquisa baseou-se em uma revisão sistemática da literatura, combinando bibliometria e análise de conteúdo. A amostra é composta por 406 artigos científicos. Essa amostra foi analisada quantitativamente, com apoio de estatística descritiva, redes de cocitação e palavras-chave. O estudo mostra que o número de publicações sobre o tópico pesquisado tem crescido nos últimos anos, mas ainda permanece disperso, com baixa conexão entre “tribos”. O estudo apresenta também que, apesar de ser relativamente consolidada, a literatura sobre SMD ainda não foi utilizada em sua totalidade para abordar os desafios dos SMDS. Um dos resultados da pesquisa mostra que a literatura de SMDS pode ser dividida em três categorias, de acordo com o seu foco principal: (1) os indicadores de sustentabilidade em si e sua aplicação na tomada de decisão; (2) o conjunto de indicadores como sistema; e (3) o contexto organizacional do SMDS. Analisando essas categorias, verifica-se que há poucas evidências sobre as consequências da implantação de SMD, bem como que a literatura ainda não é clara sobre como gestores devem considerar contingências dos SMDS tais como setor, tamanho da empresa, tipo de produto ou modelo de negócio.

Abstract The present study discusses the incorporation of the concept of corporate sustainability into the literature of performance measurement systems (PMS), resulting in the investigation of publications on sustainability PMS (SPMS). This study presents an overview of the literature on SPMS, synthesizing the main contributions and pointing out the main trends and gaps in this area of knowledge. The research method is based on a systematic review of the literature, combining bibliometrics and content analysis. The sample is composed of 406 scientific articles. This sample was analyzed quantitatively, with support of descriptive statistics, co-citation network and keywords network. The study shows that the number of publications on the topic surveyed has grown in recent years, but still remains scattered, with low connection between tribes. The study also shows that, despite being relatively consolidated, the literature on SPMS has not yet been exhausted towards addressing the challenges of SPMS. One of the research results shows that the SPMS literature can be divided into three categories according to its main focus: (1) the sustainability indicators themselves and their application in decision making; (2) the set of indicators as a system; and (3) the organizational context of the SPMS. Analyzing these categories, there is little evidence on the consequences of the SPMS implementation, as well as the fact that the literature is still unclear on how managers should consider the contingencies of SPMS, such as industry, company size, type of product or business model.

Resumo: As empresas têm mostrando crescente interesse na adoção de práticas relacionadas à sustentabilidade para mitigar riscos e aumentar suas chances de sobrevivência. Nesse contexto, os indicadores de desempenho alinhados ao desenvolvimento sustentável são fundamentais para apoiar decisões gerenciais e operacionais. O presente artigo teve como objetivo avaliar aspectos ligados ao desempenho da sustentabilidade corporativa aplicados no contexto brasileiro. Mais especificamente, a pesquisa buscou analisar o desdobramento de iniciativas socioambientais no negócio das empresas e a adoção de relatórios com indicadores de sustentabilidade, destacando os desafios envolvidos nessas questões A pesquisa baseou-se em estudos de casos, explorando evidências empíricas em duas empresas de grande porte situadas no Brasil. Os dados foram obtidos por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com os gestores responsáveis pelo departamento de sustentabilidade. Além disso, documentos internos e publicados, tais como relatórios de sustentabilidade das empresas, foram usados para gerar evidências adicionais para triangulação dos dados. A análise dos estudos de caso apontaram a dificuldade da incorporação da sustentabilidade no contexto empresarial, exigindo empenho intensivo de equipes multidisciplinares para compreensão das inter-relações e trade-offs entre os pilares da sustentabilidade. Além disso, verificou-se que o uso dos indicadores GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) podem servir como base para as discussões iniciais, mas ainda existem desafios para a implantação de sistemas de mensuração de desempenho de sustentabilidade estruturado nas empresas.

Abstract: Companies have been showing growing interest in the adoption of practices related to sustainability to mitigate risks and increase their chances of survival. In this context, performance indicators aligned to sustainable development are fundamental to support managerial and operational decisions. This paper aims to evaluate aspects related to corporate sustainability performance applied in the Brazilian context. More specifically, the research seeks to analyze the unfolding of socio-environmental initiatives in the corporate business and the adoption of reports on sustainability indicators, highlighting the challenges involved in these issues. The research is based on case studies, exploring empirical evidence in two large companies located in Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with managers responsible for sustainability department. In addition, internal and published documents, such as sustainability reports, were used to generate additional evidence for data triangulation. The case studies analysis pointed out the difficulty of incorporating sustainability into the business context, requiring intensive efforts of multidisciplinary teams to understand the interrelationships and trade-offs between the pillars of sustainability. Moreover, it appears that the use of the GRI indicators (Global Reporting Initiative) can serve as a basis for initial discussions, but there are still challenges to implement a structured sustainability performance measurement system in companies.

Resumo Os projetos conduzidos em empresas e organizações têm impactos no cenário imediato bem como em um futuro mais distante. Nesse contexto, o objetivo do trabalho é compreender a inserção de questões de sustentabilidade na literatura de gestão de projetos. A metodologia mescla técnicas de bibliometria, redes e análise de conteúdo. Os resultados apontam que as publicações estão dispersas em termos de autor e revista. As temáticas remetem a questões relacionadas aos stakeholders, inovação e desenvolvimento de produto, com destaque para publicações na área da construção civil. Observa-se uma tendência, principalmente a partir de 2005, com presença constante de artigos voltados ao pilar econômico e aumento da participação das abordagens social e ambiental. As pesquisas com o enfoque na tripla restrição - social, ambiental e econômica - tiveram nos últimos dois anos destaque no incremento. Há oportunidades de pesquisa significativas, já que as publicações estão longe de exaurir esse complexo tema.

Abstract Projects conducted in firms and organizations have immediate impacts as well as long-term consequences. The objective of this paper is to understand the treatment of sustainability issues in the literature on project management. The methodology incorporates bibliometric techniques, network analysis and content analysis. The results indicate that the publications are dispersed among many authors and journals. The themes relate to issues such as stakeholders, innovation and product development, with an emphasis on publications in the area of construction. There is a tendency, especially after 2005, toward articles focused on the economic pillar and on increasing participation in social and environmental approaches. In just the last two years, studies with a focus on the triple constraint - social, environmental and economic - have increased considerably. There are significant opportunities for research because the publications are far from exhaustive on this complex subject.

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a teoria sobre Gestão por Processos de Negócio (BPM - Business Process Management). Para isso foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica sistemática e foram utilizadas técnicas de análise de publicações, citações e de bibliometria. Os resultados mostram a multidisciplinaridade de BPM, como as diferentes áreas de pesquisa compreendem o tema e como praticam essa abordagem. Dentre os periódicos relevantes para o tema, destacaram-se o Business Process Managament Journal, Knowlegde and Process Managemente Total Quality Management & Business Excellence. Dentre as abordagens de aplicação foi possível verificar que existem três tipos adotados pelo estudo e ao todo foram identificadas oito práticas de BPM. As redes de bibliometria mostraram a existência de agrupamentos bibliométricos que pouco interagem, e a relação de BPM com as abordagens de gestão da qualidade e reengenharia. Apesar do aumento de publicações na área, o que mostra a relevância do tema, as publicações tendem a seguir escolas distintas e que ainda atuam de forma isolada na área de BPM.

This article aims to analyze the theory on the subject of Business Process Management (BPM). To this end, a systematic literature review, whose purpose was to analyze BPM practices, was conducted through the analysis of publications, citations and bibliometrics. The results show the multidisciplinarity of BPM, and how different areas of research address the theme and practice this approach. Among the relevant journals on the topic, the following are highlighted: Business Process Management Journal, Knowlegde and Process Management and Total Quality Management & Business Excellence. Regarding the application approaches, we found that there are three types adopted by the study, and eight practices of BPM were identified. Networks of bibliometrics showed the existence of bibliometric groups that interact very weakly, and the relationship of BPM with the approaches of quality management and reengineering. The increasing number of publications in the area and the existence of several areas of research interested in the topic justify the analysis of the concepts and practices of BPM.
