Resumo O alagamento do solo restringe a disponibilidade do oxigênio necessário para ativação dos processos fisiológicos do embrião e que caracterizam a germinação de sementes. No entanto, algumas espécies apresentam adaptações que permitem seu crescimento natural em áreas sujeitas a inundações, como Ormosia arbórea, espécie nativa da Mata Atlântica e do Cerrado. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar como a germinação e emergência das sementes desta espécie foram afetadas pela submersão em água e escarificação. No experimento 1, as sementes foram escarificadas por 15 minutos em ácido sulfúrico e posteriormente semeadas em tubetes submersos em água por 0, 15, 30 e 45 dias. Nos experimentos 2 e 3, as sementes foram submersas em água corrente pelo mesmo período e, após cada tempo de submersão, foram escarificadas por 0, 5, 10 e 15 minutos em ácido sulfúrico e semeadas em tubetes e em papel Germitest®. Verificou-se que, após a quebra da dormência tegumentar, 15 dias de alagamento são suficientes para inviabilizar a germinação das sementes de O. arborea que toleram a submersão em água quando estão intactas. Este resultado indica que o tegumento rígido e impermeável da semente é uma importante característica da semente para essa resposta.

Abstract Soil flooding restricts the availability of the oxygen necessary to activate the embryonic physiological processes that characterize seed germination. However, some species have adaptations that allow them to grow naturally in areas prone to flooding, such as Ormosia arborea, a native species of the Atlantic forest and the Cerrado. The objective of this work was to evaluate how seed germination and emergence in this species were affected by submersion in water and scarification. In experiment 1, the seeds were scarified by 15 minutes in sulfuric acid and was subsequently sown in tubes submerged in water for 0, 15, 30 and 45 days. In experiments 2 and 3, seeds were submerged in running water for the same period and, after each time of submersion, were scarified by 0, 5, 10 and 15 minutes in sulfuric acid and sown either in tubes and in Germitest® paper. It was found that, after breaking the tegumental dormancy, 15 days of flooding is enough to derail the germination of O. arborea seeds that tolerate submersion in water when they are intact. This response indicates that the hard, impermeable seed coat is an important seed characteristic for this response.

Resumo: O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a influência térmica das cores branca e azul da cortina sanitária utilizadas como fechamentos laterais em galpão comercial de frangos de corte, visando ao bem-estar e ambiente adequado à produção de frangos de corte. Ao final de 42 dias, a cortina branca representou a melhor temperatura superficial média, entre 27,4ºC e 35,5ºC, se avaliada sem ventilação complementar. Foi possível concluir também que a cortina de cor branca mostrou-se mais eficiente para manter o bem-estar no interior do aviário, principalmente na sexta semana de produção, fato este verificado por meio de termografia infravermelha.

Abstract: The objective of this research was to evaluate the thermal influence of the white and blue colors of the sanitary curtain used as lateral closures in commercial broiler chickens, aiming at the welfare and environment suitable for the production of broilers. At the end of 42 days, the white curtain represented the best average surface temperature, between 27.4º and 35.5º, when evaluated without supplementary ventilation. It was also possible to conclude that the white color curtain was more efficient to maintain the well-being inside the aviary, especially in the sixth week of production, verified by infrared thermography.

Resumen: El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la influencia térmica de los colores blanco y azul de la cortina sanitaria utilizadas como cerramientos laterales en galpón comercial de pollos de corte, visando el bienestar y ambiente adecuado a la producción de pollos de corte. Al final de 42 días la cortina blanca representó la mejor temperatura superficial media, entre 27,4º y 35,5º, si se evalúa sin ventilación complementaria. Se pudo concluir también que la cortina de color blanca se mostró más eficiente para mantener el bienestar en el interior del aviario, principalmente en la sexta semana de producción, hecho este verificado por medio de termografía infrarroja.

Ormosia arborea é uma Leguminosae que apresenta sementes com dormência tegumentar. Objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência de métodos para superação da dormência desta espécie, caracterizar lotes de sementes coletados em diferentes matrizes e determinar a melhor época de coleta. As sementes coletadas de matrizes, em duas épocas (junho e agosto/2011), foram submetidas às análises biométricas, determinação do teor de água e testes de germinação. Com sementes da segunda coleta, determinou-se a curva de embebição e avaliou-se métodos para superação da dormência. A curva de embebição confirmou a dormência tegumentar e a escarificação química por 15 minutos foi o procedimento mais adequado para a superação desta dormência. A biometria revelou valores médios maiores do que os relatados na literatura e houve diferença entre as épocas de coleta. A massa correlacionou-se com os demais parâmetros avaliados, podendo ser indicada para a seleção de sementes na produção de mudas. As duas épocas de coletas de sementes de Ormosia arborea utilizadas foram consideradas adequadas para o fornecimento de sementes, em função do elevado potencial germinativo obtido. Entretanto, a melhor época para a coleta das sementes é quando os frutos já estão abertos, maduros, com baixo teor de água, sem necessidade de secagem adicional, o que dificulta a ocorrência de fungos.

Ormosia arborea, a Leguminosae, presents seeds with tegumentary dormancy. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of dormancy breaking methods, characterize seeds obtained from different mother plants, and to determine the best period to collect Ormosia arborea seeds. The seeds were harvested from mother plants in two different periods (June and August/2011). The seeds were then subjected to biometrical analyses, determination of moisture content and germination tests. Determination of the soaking curve and evaluation of the dormancy breaking methods were performed using the seeds collected in the second period. The soaking curve confirmed the tegumentary dormancy, and the chemical scarification for 15 minutes was the more adequate procedure to overcome this dormancy. The biometry revealed average values higher than those on literature, and there was difference between both harvesting periods. The mass correlates with the other evaluated parameters, and can be indicated for selecting seeds for seedling production. The two harvesting periods of Ormosia arborea seeds were considered appropriated for seed supplying, due to the high germination potential. Nevertheless, the best period for harvesting is when fruits are already opened, mature, and with low moisture content (no additional drying time needed), what hinders the occurrence of fungi.

Determination of α- and β-amylase activity in the extracts of cotyledons of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. cariocawas done using selective inactivation of α-amylase by lowering the pH of the incubation medium or by the use of EDTA as inhibitor or selective inactivation of β-amylase by the use of HgCl2 or by heating to 70ºC in the presence of CaCl2; and still by using the reagent starch azure for specific determination of α-amylase. Results indicated that the methods used were inappropriate in this case, being indicated the determination of total amylase activity.
