É de conhecimento geral que existe grande escassez de estudos referentes às fases juvenis das plantas, importantes como subsídio para diversos trabalhos ecológicos, taxonômicos e filogenéticos. Com base nesse pressuposto, descreveram-se morfologicamente plântulas e plantas jovens de Pachyrhizus ahipa, espécie cultivada de Phaseoleae (Fabaceae), analisando-se o tipo de plântula e caracterizando estruturalmente os cotilédones, eofilos e metafilos. Verificou-se que a plântula é semi-hipógea, tipo de germinação até então não registrado para a tribo Phaseoleae. A plântula forma dois eofilos unifoliolados e opostos, acompanhados por evidente par de estipelas. Os metafilos são trifoliolados, de filotaxia alterna. Tanto eofilos quanto metafilos são pinados, camptódromos e broquidódromos.

The aim of this work was to describe the morphology of seedlings and saplings of Pachyrhizus ahipa, a cultivated species of Phaseoleae (Fabaceae), analysing the seedling type and characterizing the structure of cotyledons, eophylls and metaphylls. It was observed that the seedling was semi-hypogeal, a germination type not yet recorded for the Phaseoleae tribe. It formed two opposite and unifoliated eophylls with an evident pair of stipels. Metaphylls were trifoliolate and had alternate phyllotaxis. Both eophylls and metaphylls were pinnate, camptodromous, and brochidodromous.

Canna edulis é uma planta ornamental utilizada em muitos países como fonte alimentar alternativa. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever a formação do córtex radicular a partir da análise anatômica da região apical. Na região situada a 220µm do pró-meristema, os tecidos meristemáticos apicais já se apresentam organizados em protoderme, meristema fundamental e procâmbio. Em fase subseqüente na diferenciação celular, a 450µm do pró-meristema, as camadas de células do córtex estão dispostas em fileiras radiais iniciando-se na endoderme. Depois que as iniciais endodérmicas cessam as divisões, adquirem estrias de Caspary. Na raiz, a 1.700µm do pró-meristema, os tecidos primários já se encontram diferenciados, sendo o padrão de distribuição celular observado no córtex de C. edulis característico ao apresentado por outras espécies de Zingiberales. A análise anatômica da região apical levou à constatação que 2/3 do córtex é resultante da atividade meristemática da endoderme e o restante das células corticais são originadas diretamente do meristema fundamental.

Canna edulis is a ornamental plant used in many countries how alternative nutritional source. This work describes the development of the radicular cortex from anatomical observations of apical region. In the region situated at 220µm from the promeristem, apical meristematic tissues at once present themselves organized in protoderm, ground meristem and procambium. During the subsequent phase of cellular differentiation, at 450µm from the promeristem, cell layers of the cortex are arranged in radial tiers to be initiated in the endodermis, indicating the presence of meristematic endodermis activity. After finishing divisions, endodermic initial acquire Casparian strips. In the root at 1,700µm from of promeristem, primary tissues are immediately differentiated, the pattern of cellular distribution being observed in the cortex of Canna edulis, a characteristic of that is found in other species of Zingiberales. The anatomical observations lead to the conclusion that 2/3 of the cortex is originated of endodermis with meristematic activity, and the remainder are originated from ground meristem.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar características morfológicas e anatômicas do sistema caulinar de Canna edulis. As observações morfoanatômicas, de crescimento das gemas e formação do sistema caulinar, foram efetuadas durante o ciclo vegetativo da planta. O sistema subterrâneo é formado por raízes adventícias fibrosas originadas a partir dos nós e entrenós dos rizomas. Esses órgãos orientam-se paralelamente à superfície do solo com padrão de ramificação simpodial. As gemas apicais dos rizomas diferenciam-se em caules reprodutivos, constituídos por nós e entrenós característicos. A base desse órgão é constituída por catafilos. O caule reprodutivo é formado por epiderme unisseriada e em posição subepidérmica, nota-se a presença de células com estrias de Caspary. Os rizomas adultos são constituídos por epiderme, córtex com endoderme evidente e cilindro vascular delimitado por periciclo plurisseriado. Embora as características morfológicas do sistema caulinar dessa planta concordem com as descrições recentes aplicadas aos rizóforos, o caule subterrâneo desta espécie foi interpretado como um rizoma.

The purpose of this research was to study the morpho-anatomical characteristics of the shoot system of Canna edulis. The observation of the buds and shoot system development were made during the vegetative cycle of the plant. The underground system is formed by fibrous adventitious roots originated from nodes and internodes of the rhizomes. These organs are oriented parallel to the surface of the ground, presenting a pattern of sympodial branching. The apical buds of the rhizomes are differentiated in reproductive stems, constituted by distinctive nodes and internodes. The base of this organ is constituted by cataphylls. The reproductive stem is formed by uniseriate epidermis, and in the subepidermical position there are cells with Casparian strips. The adult rhizome consists of the epidermis, cortex with a clear endodermis and vascular cylinder delimited by pluriseriate pericycle. Although the morphological characteristics of the shoot system of this plant agree with recent descriptions applied to the rhizophore, the underground stem of this species was interpreted as a rhizome.

Realizou-se o estudo da ontogênese do sistema subterrâneo de P. ahipa com o objetivo de contribuir para o conhecimento da morfologia, bem como do processo de tuberização dos órgãos subterrâneos desta espécie. Amostras das regiões do hipocótilo e da raiz primária foram retiradas em diferentes fases de desenvolvimento da planta e processadas segundo técnica usual. Verificou-se que o sistema subterrâneo de P. ahipa compreende um xilopódio e uma raiz tuberosa. O xilopódio corresponde a uma porção cilíndrica, lenhosa e lignificada, próxima ao solo, da qual surgem novos brotos. Logo abaixo, encontra-se a raiz primária tuberosa, de formato predominantemente fusiforme. O processo de tuberização da raiz resulta da atividade de um câmbio vascular típico, juntamente com câmbios acessórios que surgem a partir da retomada de divisão celular do parênquima do xilema secundário, após a primeira fase do crescimento secundário usual. A ontogênese do xilopódio mostra que este apresenta natureza mista, formando-se a partir do crescimento secundário tanto do hipocótilo quanto da região basal da raiz primária tuberosa.

A study on the ontogeny of the underground system of P. ahipa was held with the purpose of understanding both its morphology and its process of tuberization. Samples, collected from the hypocotyl region and from the primary root during different phases of plant development, were processed according to usual technic. The underground system of P. ahipa is composed by both a xylopodium and a tuberous root. The xylopodium is a cylindrical lignified region near the soil and gives rises to new sprouts. Immediately below to this part there is a primary tuberous root, which is predominantly fusiform. The root tuberization results from the activity of a typical vascular cambium and from accessory cambium originated from the parenchyma of the secondary xylem, after the first phase of the usual secondary growth. The xylopodium is of a mixed nature, as it arrises from the hypocotyl and from the base of the primary root.
