Resumen Antecedentes: El noreste de México, estados de Coahuila, Nuevo León y Tamaulipas, constituye una región heterogénea que incluye sierras, planicies continentales y llanuras costeras con una infinidad de ambientes, substratos geológicos y gradientes altitudinales que favorecen la presencia de una rica biodiversidad. No existe una síntesis que documente la diversidad florística de esta región. Preguntas: ¿Cuál es la magnitud de la diversidad de plantas vasculares en el noreste de México?, ¿Cuáles son las familias y géneros con mayor número de especies?, ¿Cómo se distribuye geográficamente esta riqueza florística en toda la región y cuáles son sus elementos más característicos? Especies de estudio: 7,088 especies de plantas vasculares. Sitio de muestreo: estados de Coahuila, Nuevo León y Tamaulipas. Métodos: Se consultó literatura florística-taxonómica sobre la flora de la región y bases de datos de ejemplares para hacer un análisis espacial de la biodiversidad usando celdas de 1° de longitud y latitud. Se calculó la riqueza y el endemismo en la región, los estados y las celdas. Resultados: Para el noreste de México se reportan 7,088 especies de plantas vasculares, de las cuales 1,767 son endémicas de México. Conclusiones: El noreste de México registra una diversidad florística particularmente interesante y compleja, debido a que su territorio se ubica primordialmente fuera del neotrópico y porque constituye el límite boreal para muchos elementos de la flora de México.

Abstract Background: The Northeastern Mexico, comprising the states of Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, constitutes a heterogeneous region that includes mountains, continental and coastal plains with a variety of environments, geological substrates, and altitudinal gradients that favor the presence of a rich biodiversity. There is no a synthesis that documents the floristic diversity of this region. Questions: What is the magnitude of the diversity of vascular plants in northeastern Mexico? What are the families and genera with the largest number of species? How is the floristic richness distributed geographically throughout this region and what are its most characteristic elements? Studied species: 7,088 species of vascular plants. Study site and dates: states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. Methods: Floristic-taxonomic literature on the flora of the region and specimen databases were consulted to make a spatial analysis of biodiversity using cells of 1° longitude and latitude. Richness and endemism in the region, states, and grid cells were calculated. Results: For northeastern Mexico, 7,088 species of vascular plants are reported, of which 1,767 are endemic to Mexico. Conclusions: The northeast of Mexico records a particularly interesting and complex floristic diversity, due to the fact that its territory is located primarily outside the Neotropics and because it constitutes the boreal limit for many elements of the flora of Mexico.

Abstract The evaluation of tree structure and diversity has been of vital importance for the planning and management of urban forests. Unfortunately, there are currently numerous wooded areas in cities, where the current status of the species present is unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the structure and diversity of the trees in Parque Hundido, which is in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Nuevo León. In September 2021, all the trees and shrubs were registered and their total height and crown length, normal diameter, and crown diameter were measured. As a result, 26 species were identified, of which 11 were native and 15 introduced. The species that presented the highest values of abundance, crown area and frequency were Fraxinus uhdei, Fraxinus americana and Ehretia anacua. The graphs of diameter and height classes indicate that there is a greater proportion of trees with intermediate diameters and heights, which indicates an adult plant community. The richness and diversity values were intermediate, like other urban green areas in northeastern Mexico. It is concluded that native tree plants are more important than exotic ones in Parque Hundido.

Resumen La evaluación de la estructura y diversidad arbórea ha sido de vital importancia para la planificación y gestión de los bosques urbanos. Desafortunadamente, en la actualidad existen numerosas áreas arboladas en las ciudades, donde se desconoce el estado actual de las especies presentes. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la estructura y diversidad del arbolado del Parque Hundido. El parque se encuentra en el municipio de San Pedro Garza García, en la zona metropolitana de Monterrey, Nuevo León. En septiembre de 2021 se censaron todos los árboles y arbustos a los cuales se les midió la altura total, longitud de copa, el diámetro normal y el diámetro de copa. Se identificaron 26 especies, de las cuales 11 fueron nativas y 15 introducidas. Las especies que presentaron los valores más altos de abundancia, área de copa y frecuencia, fueron Fraxinus uhdei, Fraxinus americana y Ehretia anacua. La distribución de clases diamétricas y altura indican que hay mayor proporción de arbolado con diámetros y alturas intermedias, lo que indica una comunidad adulta. Los valores de riqueza y diversidad fueron intermedios, similares a otras áreas verdes urbanas del noreste de México. Se concluye que las plantas arbóreas nativas son más importantes que las exóticas en el Parque Hundido.

Resumen En este estudio se evaluó la proporción de especies arbóreas nativas respecto a las introducidas en bosques urbanos de seis zonas rurales de Hualahuises, Nuevo León (noreste de México). Para el análisis de varianza se utilizó la prueba de proporciones con un nivel de confianza de 0.95 mediante el comando prop.test en R. Se registraron 252 individuos de 32 especies distribuidas en 29 géneros y 19 familias. La familia Fabaceae fue la mejor representada con siete especies. De todos los taxones, 19 son nativos (59.37 %) y 13 introducidos (40.63 %). De acuerdo con su origen, 77.79 % de los individuos son nativos y 22.21 % introducidos. Referente a sus dimensiones, las diferencias porcentuales son mayores: las nativas representan 91.69 % de área basal, 92.36 % de área de copa, 92.22 % de área superficial de la copa y 96.78 % de volumen de copa, mientras que las no nativas presentan valores inferiores a 9.00 %. Prosopis laevigata, seguida de Vachellia farnesiana y Ebenopsis ebano presentaron los valores estructurales más altos. Las tres son nativas pertenecientes a la familia Fabaceae y juntas conforman 44.05 % de la abundancia y 63.71 % del Índice de Valor de Importancia Urbano. Con base en el análisis de varianza, las especies nativas resultaron tener mayores valores de riqueza, área basal y área superficial de copa que las introducidas en las localidades evaluadas.

Abstract In this study, the proportion of native vs. introduced tree species in urban forests of six rural areas of Hualahuises, Nuevo León (Northeast Mexico) was evaluated. For the analysis of variance, the proportions test was used with a confidence level of 0.95 through the prop.test command in R. 252 individuals of 32 species distributed in 29 genera and 19 families were recorded. The Fabaceae family was the largest represented with seven species. Of the 32 species, 19 are native (59.37 %) and 13 introduced (40.63 %). Based upon their origin, 77.79 % of the individuals are native and 22.21 % introduced. Regarding their dimensions, the percentage differences are greater: the native ones represent 91.69 % of the basimetric area, 92.36 % of the crown area, 92.22 % of the assumed crown area and 96.78 % of crown volume, while the non-natives present values lower than 9.00 %. At the species level, those with the highest structural values were Prosopis laevigata followed by Vachellia farnesiana and Ebenopsis ebano. The three species are native belonging to the Fabaceae family and together they represent 44.05 % of the abundance and 63.71 % of the Urban Importance Value Index. According to the analysis of variance, the native species turned out to have higher values of richness, basal area, and crown area than the introduced species in the assessed localities.

Resumen Se evaluó la composición florística de un fragmento de matorral espinoso tamaulipeco restaurado y la respuesta de seis especies leñosas nativas empleadas para dicho fin, además de dos establecidas de forma natural, a través de los atributos de la comunidad y las variables dasométricas de las especies utilizadas (cobertura de copa, altura total, diámetro normal y volumen). Se muestrearon 12 sitios de 10 x 10 m, donde se evaluaron la cobertura (m2), el diámetro normal (cm), la altura total (m) y el volumen (m3) para las ocho especies estudiadas. Los resultados indican que las ocho especies presentan diferencias estadísticas significativas en su cobertura de copa, altura, diámetro normal y volumen. Las especies que presentaron mayores valores en sus variables dasométricas fueron Parkinsonia aculeata y Acacia farnesiana.

Abstract The floristic composition of a fragment of restored Tamaulipan thornscrub and the response of six native woody species used for this purpose were evaluated, as well as two that were established naturally, through the attributes of the community and the dasometric variables of the species used (crown cover, height, normal diameter, and volume). 12 sites of 10 x 10 m were sampled, where tree cover (m2), normal diameter (cm), total height (m), and volume (m3) were evaluated for the eight studied species. The results indicate that the eight species exhibit statistically significant differences in their crown cover, height, normal diameter, and volume. The species with higher values regarding their dasometric variables were Parkinsonia aculeata and Acacia farnesiana.

RESUMEN El arbolado urbano ofrece importantes servicios ambientales en las ciudades, razón por la cual su establecimiento y estudio se ha incrementado en los últimos años. En este trabajo se evaluó el cambio de la composición y diversidad del arbolado urbano en la ciudad de Linares, Nuevo León, México en un período de 26 años (1995-2021). Para esto se midió la altura y cobertura de copa, así como los índices de diversidad de Shannon y de similitud de Morisita-Horn. Se registraron 62 especies (22 nativas y 40 introducidas) pertenecientes a 56 géneros y 29 familias de árboles en todo el periodo evaluado. Las familias mejor representadas fueron Fabaceae con nueve especies, Fagaceae, Oleaceae y Rutaceae con cuatro y Apocynaceae y Moraceae con tres. Se observó un incremento en la densidad de árboles introducidos de 1995 a 1999, mientras que, en las últimas dos décadas, la densidad de especies nativas aumentó significativamente, como el caso de Quercus fusiformis y Fraxinus udhei. La mayor similitud de especies se registró en el periodo 1995-1999 (69,2 %) con especies compartidas como las exóticas Ficus benjamina y Ligustrum japonicum. La flora arbórea actual en las áreas públicas de Linares, es probablemente el resultado de un mayor conocimiento de la ecología de las especies tanto nativas como introducidas por parte de la sociedad, así como de las instituciones académicas y gubernamentales de Linares, Nuevo León.

ABSTRACT Urban trees offer important environmental services in cities, which is why their establishment and study has increased in recent years. In this work, the change in the composition and diversity of urban trees was evaluated in the small city of Linares, Nuevo León in a period of 26 years (1995 2021). For this, crown coverage was measured, and the Shannon diversity and Morisita-Horn similarity indices were obtained. As results, 62 species (22 native and 40 introduced) belonging to 56 genera and 29 tree families were recorded throughout the evaluated period. The best represented families were Fabaceae with 9 species, Fagaceae, Oleaceae and Rutaceae with 4 and Apocynaceae and Moraceae with 3. An increase in the density of introduced trees was observed from 1995 to 1999, while by 2021 those of native origin increased significantly as was the case with Quercus fusiformis and Fraxinus udhei. The highest species similarity was recorded in the 1995-1999 period (69,2 %) with shared species such as the exotic Ficus benjamina and Ligustrum japonicum. The current arboreal flora in the public areas of Linares is probably the result of a greater knowledge of the ecology of both native and introduced species by society, as well as the academic and governmental institutions of Linares, Nuevo León.

Resumen El arbolado urbano incluye principalmente especies de origen introducido, aunque cada vez es más común el uso de árboles nativos tanto en México como en otras regiones del mundo. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue documentar el uso de taxones arbóreos en las áreas verdes urbanas del noreste de México. Específicamente, se plantearon las siguientes preguntas: ¿Existen cambios en el uso de especies? ¿A qué se deben esos cambios? ¿Cuál es la tendencia futura en el uso de especies? Para ello, se realizó una búsqueda en internet de artículos sobre el tema en los sitios: ISI Web of Knowledge, EBSCO, SCOPUS y Google académico. Los resultados indicaron que sí hubo cambios en los taxa utilizados. Se identificaron tres periodos: el primero de 1850 a 1980 en el cual se utilizaban, principalmente, especies introducidas como Fraxinus americana y Ligustrum lucidium; de 1980 a 2000, cuando se inicia el uso de taxones nativos como Quercus fusiformis; y del 2000 a la actualidad, en el que se consolida el empleo de especies nativas producidas en viveros locales como Ebenopsis ebano. Los aspectos que detonaron esos cambios fueron las experiencias con las heladas, la generación de evidencia por parte de los académicos, la consolidación de los viveristas en la región y la creación y gestión de la Asociación Mexicana de Arboricultura. La tendencia futura apunta hacia la reforestación de las áreas verdes urbanas del noreste de México con especies nativas.

Abstract Urban trees mainly include species of introduced origin, although the use of native trees is increasingly common both in Mexico and in other regions of the world. The main objective of this study was to document the use of tree species in urban green areas in northeastern Mexico. Specifically, the following questions were raised: Are there changes in the use of species? What is the reason for these changes? What is the future trend in the use of species? In order to answer them, articles in web search engines were reviewed: ISI Web of Knowledge, EBSCO, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar. The results indicated that there were changes in the use of species. Three periods were identified: the first, from 1850 to 1980, when introduced species such as Fraxinus americana and Ligustrum lucidium were mainly used; from 1980 to 2000, when the use of native species such as Quercus fusiformis began; and from 2000 to the present, where the use of native species produced in local nurseries such as Ebenopsis ebano became established. The aspects that triggered these changes were the experiences with frosts, the generation of evidence by academics, the establishment of nurserymen in the region, and the creation and management of the Mexican Association of Arboriculture. The future trend in the use of species to reforest green urban areas is to preserve the native ones.

Abstract Beaucarnea inermis is an endemic species from Northeast Mexico, in the states of San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas. It is appreciated as an ornamental plant, so its populations are subject to the poaching of individuals for illegal trade. Previous studies determined that their populations have been affected due to the disturbance since the incidence of anthropogenic activities affects the viability of the species. Here we determine the current conservation status of B. inermis and identify their main risk factor by performing an extinction risk assessment based on the Annex II “Method for Evaluation of Risk of Extinction of Plants in Mexico”. We studied 10 populations of B. inermis from protected and non-protected areas in San Luis Potosí and Tamaulipas. We considered the MER criteria: A) geographical distribution characteristics, B) habitat characteristics, C) intrinsic biological vulnerability, and D) impact of human activity. Using field and analyzed data, the MER assessment gives 1.91 points that confirm B. inermis is correctly classified as an Endangered species. The natural protected areas where the species occurs represent cores for its protection; however, the surface of these areas may not be sufficient without biological corridors that connect them. Resumen Beaucarnea inermis es una especie endémica del Noroeste de México distribuida en los estados de San Luis Potosí y Tamaulipas. Es apreciada como planta ornamental, por lo que sus poblaciones están sujetas al saqueo de individuos para su comercialización ilegal. En trabajos anteriores se determinó que sus poblaciones han sido afectadas debido al disturbio por la incidencia de actividades antrópicas que afectan su viabilidad. En la presente contribución se determina el nivel de riesgo de B. inermis con base en el Anexo Normativo II “Método de Evaluación de Riesgo de Extinción de Plantas en México”. Se estudiaron 10 poblaciones de B. inermis en San Luis Potosí y Tamaulipas, tanto en áreas naturales protegidas como en sitios no protegidos. Los criterios MER considerados fueron: A) características de la distribución geográfica, B) características del hábitat, C) vulnerabilidad biológica intrínseca y D) impacto de la actividad humana. Resumen Los árboles constituyen un recurso importante en las zonas urbanas debido a los servicios ambientales que brindan. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la composición florística, estructura y diversidad del arbolado urbano del centro de Hualahuises, Nuevo León. Se evaluó el arbolado urbano de los espacios públicos del centro de Hualahuises, abarcando las plazas públicas y aceras. A cada árbol se le midieron su altura total, el diámetro normal y diámetro de copa. Para cada especie se determinó su abundancia, su cobertura, y su frecuencia, para obtener su Índice de Valor de Importancia. También se determinó la riqueza de especies mediante el índice de Margalef, el índice de diversidad de Shannon, y el número de especies efectivas. Se registraron 38 especies de plantas vasculares distribuidas en 35 géneros y 22 familias. El 63.20 % (25 especies) son introducidas y el 36.8 % (21 especies) son nativas. La familia más representativa fue Fabaceae con cuatro especies. Los análisis de clases diamétricas y de altura indican una mayor proporción de individuos con diámetros bajos (d 1.30 <5 cm) y alturas intermedias (h>3 m y <6 m). La comunidad vegetal presenta valores intermedios-altos de riqueza y altos de diversidad de especies comparado con otras áreas verdes urbanas del noreste de México. Más de la mitad de las especies (63 %) son introducidas, entre las cuales Fraxinus americana y Thuja occidentalis sobresalen por su Índice de Valor de Importancia. La especie nativa con mayor valor de importancia fue Quercus virginiana.

Abstract Trees are an important resource in urban areas due to the environmental services they provide. The objective of this study was to evaluate the floristic composition, structure, and diversity of urban trees in the center of Hualahuises, Nuevo León. The urban trees of the public spaces in the center of Hualahuises were evaluated, covering the public squaresand sidewalks. Total height, normal diameter and crown diameter were measured for each tree. For each species, abundance, cover, and frequency were determined to obtain its Importance Value Index. Species richness was also determined using the Margalef index, Shannon's diversity index, and the number of effective species. 38 species of vascular plants distributed in 35 genera and 22 families were recorded. 63.20 % (25 species) are introduced and 36.85 % (21 species) are native. The most representative family was Fabaceae with four species. The graphs of diameter and height classes indicate the existence of a higher proportion of individuals with small diameters (d 1.30 <5 cm) and intermediate heights (h>3 m and <6 m). The plant community presents intermediate-high values of richness and high values of diversity of species compared to other urban green areas of northeastern Mexico. More than half (63 %) of the species are introduced, among which Fraxinus americana and Thuja occidentalis stand out for their Importance Value Index. The native species with the highest importance value was Quercus virginiana.

Abstract Background: Magnolia alejandrae is a critically endangered species and endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental in northeastern Mexico. The abiotic requirements for its germination, such as light and temperature, are unknown. Hypotheses: White light and temperature fluctuations will promote the germination of M. alejandrae and seeds from site with higher humidity will have increased germination percentage. Study species: Magnolia alejandrae. Study sites and dates: El Farallón in the Jaumave municipality and Los San Pedros in the Güémez municipality, Tamaulipas, Mexico. May-June 2019. Methods: Four light-quality treatments (white, red, far-red and darkness) were evaluated, along with two temperature treatments: constant (18/18 ºC) and fluctuating temperatures (8/18 ºC) and two populations (El Farallón and Los San Pedros) on the germination of M. alejandrae. We used twenty seeds of the study species per experimental unit with five repetitions for each treatment. Results: Light quality influenced the germination of M. alejandrae seeds, having the highest germination (76 %) under white light, followed by 45 % under red light, 9 % under far-red and 5 % in darkness, demonstrating that the seeds of this species are neutral photoblastic. Temperature fluctuation (8/18 °C) enhanced germination of M. alejandrae more than constant temperature (18/18 °C). Conclusions: M. alejandrae seeds respond differentially to light quality and temperature, which has important implications in the reforestation and conservation of the species.

Resumen Antecedentes: Magnolia alejandrae es una especie en peligro crítico y es endémica de la Sierra Madre Oriental de México. Se desconocen los requerimientos abióticos como luz y temperatura para su germinación. Hipótesis: La germinación de M. alejandrae se verá favorecida bajo la luz blanca y la fluctuación de temperaturas. Las semillas de la población con mayor humedad tendrán mayor porcentaje de germinación. Especie de estudio: Magnolia alejandrae. Sitio de estudio: El Farallón en el municipio de Jaumave y Los San Pedros en el municipio de Güémez, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Mayo-junio 2019. Métodos: Se evaluaron cuatro tratamientos de calidad de luz (blanca, rojo, rojo lejano y oscuridad); dos tratamientos de temperatura: constante (18/18 ºC) y fluctuación de temperatura (8/18 ºC) y dos poblaciones (El Farallón y Los San Pedros) sobre la germinación de M. alejandrae. Se colocaron 20 semillas de la especie de estudio por unidad experimental con cinco repeticiones por cada tratamiento. Resultados: La calidad de la luz tuvo un efecto en la germinación de las semillas de M. alejandrae, las cuales tuvieron una germinación mayor (76 %) bajo la luz blanca, seguida de la luz roja (45 %), rojo lejano (9 %) y oscuridad (5 %), lo que demuestra que las semillas de esta especie son fotoblásticas neutras. La fluctuación de temperatura (8/18 °C) incrementó la germinación de M. alejandrae. Conclusiones: Las semillas de M. alejandrae responden diferencialmente a la calidad de luz y a la temperatura, lo cual tiene implicaciones importantes en la reforestación y conservación de la especie.

Abstract Background: The plant community in southern Texas and the adjacent region in Mexico is Tamaulipan thornscrub (MET). However, the recently published proposals for quantitative hierarchical classification have evidenced the presence of more communities and the need for quantitative descriptions of these associations to determine their conservation status. Question: What is the structure and floristic composition of a semi-thorn shrubland in Reynosa’s northwestern region? Studied species: Tamaulipan low semi-thorn scrubland. Study site and dates: Hills in Reynosa’s northwestern region (Tamaulipas), Mexico. August 2018-July 2019. Methods: Abundance, height and coverage of each plant species were measured on 33 plots of 10 × 10 m. Horizontal structure was analyzed by Importance Value Index, vertical structure was estimated through a modification of the Pretzsch Index and in addition alpha diversity indices were calculated. Results: Richness was 55 species, within 54 genera and 25 families. The importance values were centered mainly in small, spineless shrub species (Lippia graveolens, Calliandra conferta, Turnera diffusa and Krameria ramosissima). The vertical structure presented four defined strata with 50 % of species equally represented in all strata and the remaining 50 % restricted to a single stratum (A = 2.86, Amax = 5.39, Arel = 52.98 %). The species with the highest proportional density were distributed only in stratum IV (0-1.12 m). Conclusions: The community is a clearly defined low semi-thorn scrubland. The structural characteristics indicate that it can be a possible transition plant association between MET and piedmont scrub. This reinforces the proposals of the recently published classification systems.

Resumen Antecedentes: La vegetación del sur de Texas y la región adyacente de México es el matorral espinoso tamaulipeco (MET). Sin embargo, los sistemas de clasificación jerárquicos cuantitativos recientes evidencian la presencia de más comunidades y la necesidad de descripciones cuantitativas para conocer su estado actual. Preguntas: ¿Cómo es la estructura y composición florística de un matorral subinerme en el noreste de México? Especies de estudio: Especies de un matorral bajo subinerme. Sitio y años de estudio: Lomeríos del noreste de México (Reynosa, Tamaulipas). Agosto 2018-julio 2019. Métodos: Se midió la abundancia, altura y cobertura de cada especie en 33 parcelas de 10 × 10 m. La estructura horizontal se analizó mediante el IVI, la vertical mediante una modificación del Índice de Pretzsch, además de calcularse índices de diversidad alfa. Resultados: La riqueza fue de 55 especies, 54 géneros y 25 familias. El valor de importancia se concentró principalmente en los de arbustos pequeños inermes (Lippia graveolens, Calliandra conferta, Turnera diffusa y Krameria ramosissima). La estructura vertical presentó cuatro estratos definidos con 50 % de las especies representadas en todos los estratos y el resto se restringió a un solo estrato (A = 2.86, Amax = 5.39, Arel = 52.98 %). Las especies con mayor densidad proporcional se distribuyeron solo en el estrato IV (0 a 1.12 m). Conclusiones: La comunidad corresponde a un matorral bajo subinerme claramente definido. La estructura indica un posible matorral de transición entre MET y matorral submontano. Esto refuerza las propuestas de clasificación recientemente publicadas.

RESUMEN En este estudio se analizó la dieta y se estimó la abundancia relativa de la zorra gris (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) a través del registro de excretas colectadas en el Área Natural Protegida Altas Cumbres (ANPAC), Tamaulipas, México. El muestreo se realizó de agosto de 2017 a noviembre de 2018. Las excretas fueron lavadas y separadas para identificar a las especies presa que conforman la dieta de la zorra gris y la abundancia se estimó con un índice de abundancia relativa (IAR = número de excretas/kilómetros recorridos). Con 938 excretas, se determinó que la dieta de la zorra gris fue generalista y estuvo conformada por tres categorías; materia vegetal, invertebrados y vertebrados. Dentro de la materia vegetal, las especies más representativas fueron Brahea berlandieri o palma de la sierra madre que es endémica del noreste de México y Litsea glaucescens, también conocida como laurel de la sierra. Ambas especies son de gran importancia debido a que no habían sido descritas como parte de la dieta de la zorra gris y porque la palma está sujeta a protección especial y el laurel está en peligro de extinción. En los invertebrados la presa de mayor consumo fue el Orden Miriapoda y en los vertebrados el Orden Rodentia. La abundancia de la zorra gris fue variable durante el muestreo de este estudio (intervalo de IAR = 0.9 a 7.9) y se consideró abundante con respecto a otros carnívoros presentes en el ANPAC.

ABSTRACT In this study, the gray fox’s (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) diet was examined and relative abundance was estimated, through the record of scats collected in the Área Natural Protegida Altas Cumbres (ANPAC), Tamaulipas, Mexico. The sampling effort was from August 2017 to November 2018. The scats were washed and separated to identify the prey species that make up the gray fox’s diet and the abundance was estimated with an index of relative abundance (IAR = number of scats/kilometers). From 938 scats, we determined that the diet of the gray fox was generalist and composed of three categories; plant material, invertebrates and vertebrates. Within the plant material, the most representative were Brahea berlandieri or Sierra Madre palm, which is endemic to northeastern Mexico and Litsea glaucescens or also known as laurel de la sierra. Both species are of great importance, because these species have not been described previously as part of the diet of the gray fox and because the palm is subject to special protection and the laurel in danger of extinction. Among invertebrates the most consumed prey was the Order Miriapoda and for vertebrates the Order Rodentia. The abundance of the gray fox was variable throughout the sampling of this study (range of IAR = 0.9 to 7.91) and it was considered abundant with respect to other carnivores of the ANPAC.

Abstract Helietta parvifolia is a species of economic importance in Northern Mexico, being a potential source of wood and firewood for several uses. The objective of the study was to evaluate the structure and diversity of a mature H. parvifolia scrub in Northwest Mexico. Vegetation diversity was determined by establishing 20 sampling sites of 10 × 10 m each (2000 m² in total), where the normal and crown diameter of all trees and shrubs with a diameter ≥ 3 cm were recorded. The Margalef, Shannon and Pretzsch indexes were calculated for richness, species diversity and vertical structure, respectively. Eleven tree and shrub species were found, distributed in nine genera and six families. The Fabaceae family had the highest number of taxa (five), while the remaining families had only one species. Three of them concentrated 82.59 % of the importance value index values (IVI): Helietta parvifolia, Cordia boissieri and Havardia pallens, with 53 %, 15.44 % and 14.15%, respectively. The abundance of individuals of small diameter classes suggests the existence of an active regeneration state.

Resumen Helietta parvifolia es una especie de importancia económica en el norte de México, ya que es una fuente potencial de madera y leña para usos diversos. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la estructura y diversidad de un matorral maduro de H. parvifolia en el noroeste de México. Se determinó la diversidad de la vegetación mediante el establecimiento de 20 sitios de muestreo de 10 × 10 m cada uno (2 000 m² en total), en donde se registraron las especies, el diámetro normal y de copa de todos los árboles y arbustos con un diámetro ≥ 3 cm. Se calcularon los índices de Margalef, Shannon y Pretzsch para determinar la riqueza, diversidad de especies y estructura vertical, respectivamente. Se registraron 11 especies arbóreas y arbustivas, distribuidas en nueve géneros y seis familias. Fabaceae fue la que registró un mayor número de taxones (cinco); mientras que las familias restantes presentaron solamente un taxón. Tres especies concentraron 82.59 % de los valores de índice de valor de importancia (IVI): Helietta parvifolia, Cordia boissieri y Havardia pallens, con 53 %, 15.44 % y 14.15 %, respectivamente. La mayor abundancia de individuos de clases diamétricas pequeñas sugiere la existencia de un estado de regeneración activo.

Abstract Background: Ecological restoration is a process that helps the recovery of an ecosystem that has been degraded, damaged or destroyed. The success of restoration actions depend on the understanding of the processes, mechanisms and factors that guide vegetation dynamics. The restoration of plant communities can be made by unassisted (passive restoration, where the community recover by itself ) and assisted (active restoration) ecological succession. It is imperative to know the scope of both types of activities to guide future restoration actions by evaluating the properties and functioning of the intervened communities. Methods: Variance analysis of the carbon (C) stocks, basal area, canopy area, Shannon–Weaver index values, specific richness and abundance of three Tamaulipan thornscrub communities (assisted natural succession area, unassisted natural succession area and control area) was performed. Furthermore, a similarity analysis between the sampling areas using the floristic composition (abundance) was performed. Results: In total, 11 families, 17 genera and 20 species of vascular plants were registered. The richness of species and abundance ranked as follows per area: assisted ecological natural succession > control > unassisted ecological natural succession. The species composition between sampling areas showed a low number of common species between plant communities. Conclusions: The values of species richness, diversity, abundance, basal area, and canopy area of the assisted natural succession vegetal community was statistical similar to the control plan community. The values of C stocks showed that assisted ecological succession could recover not only structure and composition attributes but also this key ecosystem property.

Abstract Apiculture continues to grow steadily in Mexico as does interest in potential nectariferous and polliniferous flora in different states. An inventory was made of melliferous plant species in the state of Tamaulipas, Mexico, visited by Apis mellifera L. in different annual seasons. Field work was done between 2012 and 2015. Plant species whose flowers were visited by A. mellifera were documented, including data on life form, growth form, origin, resource production, vegetation type and flowering time. A total of 215 species were recorded belonging to 173 genera and 60 families of phanerogamic plants. Most are native species (87.91 %) and herbaceous (42.32 %). Fabaceae and Asteraceae are the most common families. The highest proportion of plants are nectariferous (45.12 %), followed by nectariferous-polliniferous (40 %) and polliniferous (14.88 %). Secondary vegetation and dry tropical forest contain the largest number of these species, and provide the greatest floral resources during the summer season.

Resumen El desarrollo de la apicultura en México ha incrementado el interés por conocer el potencial de la flora nectarífera y polinífera en diferentes estados. El objetivo del estudio fue ampliar el conocimiento sobre la flora de importancia apícola en Tamaulipas en las diferentes estaciones del año. Con base en trabajo de campo realizado entre 2012 y 2015, se obtuvo un inventario de las especies de plantas cuyas flores son pecoreadas por Apis mellifera L. Se registraron un total de 215 especies, pertenecientes a 173 géneros y 60 familias de plantas fanerógamas, siendo la mayoría nativas (87.91 %) y herbáceas (42.32 %). Las familias mejor representadas fueron Fabaceae y Asteraceae. La mayor proporción de plantas son las productoras de néctar (45.12 %), seguidas por nectaro-poliníferas (40 %) y por último las productoras de polen fueron (14.88 %). La vegetación secundaria y la selva baja caducifolia son las comunidades vegetales más importantes por el número de especies identificadas que producen néctar y polen durante la época de verano.

Abstract Background: It is known that forest ecosystems have the capacity to regenerate over time. However, the anthropogenic influence over them arises the question on how different the original ecological conditions are after regeneration. Question: Do fires and agrochemicals have an influence on tree diversity in the study area? Studied species/ Data description/ Mathematical model: The structure and diversity data obtained from tree communities on four different areas were evaluated. The evaluated areas were a control area (mature forest without management) and three areas with different managements: reforested area, restored area and fumigated area. Study site and years of study: The study area was located in the Sierra de Guerrero, Mexico on areas affected by a fire that occurred in 2005. Seven years after the fire, in 2012, the investigation was performed. Methods: In each selected area a census of all tree species was carried out. The density, dominance, frequency, and importance value index were determined per species. Moreover, the diversity at community level and richness were estimated. Results: The control area showed highest values of density and dominance. The regenerated and reforested area showed highest values of specific richness and diversity. Conclusions: The evaluated areas showed significant differences when comparing diversity and structure indexes. It is recommended to implement reforestation actions in areas affected by forest fires.

Resumen Antecedentes: Es conocido que los ecosistemas forestales tienen la capacidad de regenerarse con el tiempo. Sin embargo, la influencia antropogénica hace surgir la pregunta de qué tan diferentes son las condiciones ecológicas originales después de la regeneración. Preguntas: ¿El fuego y los agroquímicos tienen una influencia en la diversidad arbórea en el área de estudio? Especie en estudio / Descripción de datos / Modelo matemático: Se analizó la información de estructura y diversidad de comunidades arbóreas en cuatro áreas diferentes. Las áreas evaluadas fueron un área de control (bosque maduro sin manejo) y tres áreas con diferentes manejos: un área reforestada, una restaurada y una fumigada. Sitio de estudio y fechas: El área de estudio se localizó en Sierra de Guerrero, México, en áreas afectadas por un fuego que ocurrió en 2005. La investigación fue realizada siete años después del incendio forestal durante el 2012. Métodos: Se realizó un censo de todas las especies arbóreas en cada área seleccionada. Por cada especie se determinaron la densidad, frecuencia y el índice de valor de importancia. También se estimó la diversidad y riqueza de especies por cada área. Resultados: El área de control mostró los valores de densidad y dominancia más altos. El área regenerada y el área reforestada mostraron los valores más altos en riqueza específica y diversidad de especies. Conclusiones: Las áreas evaluadas presentaron diferencias significativas al comparar los índices de estructura y diversidad. Es recomendable implementar acciones de reforestación en áreas afectadas por incendios.
