Resumen Las hormigas presentes en los cafetales podrían estar ejerciendo un control natural de la broca del café (BDC), como es el caso de Hypothenemus hampei al depredar a las poblaciones de esta plaga, que quedan en frutos abandonados al final de cada cosecha. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la capacidad depredadora de dos especies de hormigas (Solenopis picea y Crematogaster crinosa) sobre la broca del café con un atrayente en experimentos de campo. Para cada especie, se establecieron diez unidades experimentales (UE) con diez granos de café infestados con broca. Los granos infestados fueron colocados dentro de una malla de anjeo y colgados en árboles de café con un nido de hormigas. Para atraer las hormigas hacia los granos brocados estos fueron asperjados con una solución atrayente. Como testigo absoluto se usaron los mismos tratamientos con exclusión de hormigas y como testigo relativo granos brocados sin atrayente. La tasa de depredación de S. picea después de 24 h fue de 78,3%, seguida por C. crinosa con 34,3%. El cebo atrayente incrementó en un 22% la atracción de hormigas y depredación de estados biológicos de broca en cada UE, frente al tratamiento no asperjado. Los resultados muestran que las especies de hormigas evaluadas redujeron las poblaciones residuales de H. hampei; S. picea más que C. crinosa.

Abstract The ants present in coffee plantations could be exerting a natural control of the Coffee Berry Borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei by preying on the populations of this pest, in fruits abandoned at the end of each harvest. The objective of this research was to evaluate the predatory capacity of two species of ants (Solenopis picea and Crematogaster crinosa) on the CBB with an attractant in field experiments. For each species, ten Experimental Units (EU) containing ten coffee beans infested with CBB were established. The infested grains were placed inside a plastic mesh and hung in trees with that had an ant nest. To attract the ants to the coffee berries, the berries were sprayed with an attractant solution. The same treatments were used with exclusion of ants as absolute control and infested berries without attractant as relative control. The predation rate of S. picea after 24 h was 78.3%, followed by C. crinosa with 34.3%. The attractant bait increased an average of 22% the attraction of ants and predation of biological stages of CBB in each EU, compared to the non-sprayed treatment. The results show that the evaluated ant species reduced the residual populations of H. hampei; S. picea more than C. crinosa.

Resumen En las últimas décadas se ha documentado la demostración de habilidades cognitivas en las aves y se han diseñado diversas pruebas para evaluar adecuadamente sus capacidades. Sin embargo, los resultados de estas pruebas también pueden verse influidos por aspectos distintos de la capacidad cognitiva, como las características de comportamiento, cuerpo y hábitat. Las especies que se enfrentan a cambios ambientales rápidos y nuevos deben expresar un rendimiento cognitivo que les permita superar los obstáculos mediante el aprendizaje y la actuación, a pesar del miedo a la novedad. Aunque Sicalis flaveola se desenvuelve con gran éxito en entornos perturbados, al igual que la mayoría de las especies tropicales, se desconoce en gran medida su flexibilidad conductual y su capacidad de aprendizaje. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la capacidad cognitiva de S. flaveola y determinar si la cognición se ve afectada por la timidez, la neofobia y la condición corporal en individuos de dos poblaciones con diferentes grados de urbanización en Colombia. Se aplicaron pruebas de eliminación de obstáculos y de discriminación de colores a 28 individuos en cautiverio. La timidez y la neofobia no se vieron influenciadas por el lugar de origen, la condición corporal o el sexo. Para la prueba de eliminación de obstáculos, la timidez y la neofobia afectaron a la velocidad de aprendizaje, pero no a la discriminación. La capacidad de discriminación se vio afectada, a su vez, por la velocidad de aprendizaje de las aves en la eliminación de obstáculos, el nivel de dificultad y el número de intentos necesarios para resolver la prueba. Se confirma la capacidad de aprendizaje en esta especie.

Abstract In recent decades, the demonstration of cognitive abilities in birds has been documented and various tests have been designed to adequately evaluate their capacities. However, the results of these tests can also be influenced by aspects other than cognitive ability, such as behavioral, body and habitat characteristics. Species facing rapid and new environmental changes must express a cognitive performance that allows them to overcome obstacles through learning and acting, despite the fear of novelty. Even though Sicalis flaveola is extremely successful in disturbed environments, as with most tropical species, its behavioral flexibility and learning capacity are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cognitive ability of S. flaveola and to determine whether cognition is affected by shyness, neophobia and body condition in individuals from two populations with different degrees of urbanization in Colombia. Obstacle removal and color discrimination tests were applied to 28 individuals in captivity. Shyness and neophobia were not found to be influenced by the place of origin, body condition or sex. For obstacle removal test, shyness and neophobia affected S. flaveola learning speed of learning, but not discrimination. The ability to discriminate was in turn affected by the speed at which the birds learned to remove obstacles, level of difficulty, and the number of attempts required to solve the test. Learning capacity in this species is confirmed.

Resumen Las familias Carabidae y Cicindelidae, con cerca de 40 000 especies a nivel mundial, tienen un papel creciente en estudios de biodiversidad y ecología en Colombia, lo que hace necesaria una puesta al día de los conocimientos sobre su diversidad. Presentamos y analizamos la lista de las especies descritas/registradas en Colombia hasta 2020, con base en estudios publicados, y sus datos de distribución a escala de departamento. Los Carabidae están representados por 625 especies y los Cicindelidae por 100. Magdalena, Cundinamarca y Valle del Cauca presentan los mayores números de registros de Carabidae, mientras que para Cicindelidae son Valle del Cauca, Antioquia y Meta. Probablemente, el mayor esfuerzo de muestreo en estas regiones se debe a la accesibilidad de sus áreas naturales desde las principales ciudades. Los Cicindelidae se benefician de más registros de localidad, con solo 17 % de las especies sin mención de localidad específica en el territorio nacional, contra el 40 % en Carabidae. Regiones hiperdiversas, como el Chocó y la Amazonía, están subrepresentadas. Por consiguiente, se estima que el número de especies actualmente citadas es muy inferior a la diversidad real de las dos familias.

Abstract The beetle families Carabidae and Cicindelidae, with about 40 000 species worldwide, play an increasing role in biodiversity conservation and ecological studies in Colombia, which makes a faunistic update all the more necessary. We present and analyze a checklist of the species so far described or registered from Colombia until 2020, based on published studies, and their distribution data at the department level. Carabidae are represented by 625 species and Cicindelidae by 100. Magdalena, Cundinamarca and Valle del Cauca are the departments with the highest record numbers of Carabidae, while Cicindelidae are most frequently cited from Valle del Cauca, Antioquia and Meta. The greater sampling effort in these regions is likely due to the accessibility of their natural areas from the main towns. The geographical distribution of Cicindelidae is better documented, with only 17 % of the species without mention of specific localities within the country, against 40 % in Carabidae. Hyper-diverse regions, such as the Chocó and the Amazon, are underrepresented. The number of species currently recorded is therefore estimated to be much lower than true diversity for both families.

RESUMEN El análisis de las cargas de polen de los insectos visitantes florales del aguacate Hass es un método que permite determinar la importancia de estas especies en planes de manejo de la polinización del cultivo y elucidar el uso de hábitat e importancia de la flora en el sostenimiento de estas especies. El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar mediante un análisis polínico en los insectos visitantes florales las especies vegetales que visitan con mayor frecuencia. El estudio se realizó en dos huertos de Morales (Cauca, Colombia), durante dos periodos de floración. Se recolectaron manualmente los insectos visitantes florales y se obtuvieron muestras del polen en sus cuerpos. Se extrajo la carga polínica de las cinco especies más frecuentes durante el muestreo. El análisis palinológico mostró que los visitantes florales no limitan su visita a un recurso específico como el polen de aguacate Hass, sino que utilizan diferentes especies en el agroecosistema y sus alrededores. Los insectos transportan polen de 18 familias botánicas, siendo las plantas Bidens pilosa, Tridaxprocumbens, Emilia fosbergii, Brachiaria sp., y Mikania sp. importantes como flora polinífera. El estudio revela la importancia de preservar la diversidad de especies que, con su carga polínica, garanticen la óptima polinización de las flores.

ABSTRACT The analysis of the pollen loads of the floral visiting insects of the Hass avocado is a method that allows to determine the importance of the insect species in management plans of the pollination of the crop and to reveal the use of habitat and importance of the flora in sustaining the visitor species. This study was aimed to identify, through a pollen analysis in insects, the most frequent flower visitors of the plant. The study was conducted in two orchards of Cauca, for two flowering periods. Manually floral insect visitors were collected, and the pollen samples were obtained from their bodies. Pollen load of the five most common species was removed during sampling. The palynological analysis showed that floral visitors do not limit their visit to a specific resource such as Hass avocado pollen, but use different species in the agroecosystem and surroundings. The insects carry pollen from 18 botanical families; Bidens pilosa, Tridax procumbens, Emilia fosbergii, Brachiaria sp., and Mikania sp. were the most important pollinating flora. The study reveals the importance of preserving the diversity of species that with their pollen load guarantee the optimal pollination of the flowers.

Resumen Con el fin de profundizar en el conocimiento de la herbivoría de la hormiga arriera (Atta cephalotes) en el bosque seco tropical, se estudió la actividad forrajera de 12 nidos situados en dos parches de bosque seco: seis en el Parque Natural Regional El Vínculo en el departamento del Valle del Cauca y seis en La Pachuca en el departamento del Cauca. A partir de un inventario de nidos presentes en cada parche se evidenció una mayor concentración de éstos en la zona de borde y matriz con respecto al interior de los parches con un 84,11% para el parche de El Vínculo y un 100% para La Pachuca. Con el objeto de establecer si estas zonas ofrecen más y mejores recursos a las hormigas que el interior de los parches, entre octubre de 2015 y junio de 2016, se recolectaron 300 fragmentos foliares que transportaban las hormigas, a un metro de la boca principal y a 1,2 metros del suelo sobre la pista arbórea en cada nido. Una vez identificadas las especies vegetales, el área foliar de estos fragmentos fue medida y pesada en fresco y en seco. Además, en cada nido se tomaron diferentes medidas como largo, ancho y longitud de las pistas de forrajeo y se realizó el conteo de la cantidad de bocas inactivas y activas. Se encontró que los nidos se fundan en el borde y la matriz por ser áreas con procesos sucesionales iniciales que son garantía de presencia de plantas pioneras, de hojas muy palatables y aptas para el consumo de las hormigas. Las especies de Fabaceae fueron las más preferidas. El área foliar de los fragmentos vegetales no presentó diferencias significativas entre las diferentes recolectas, ni entre nidos. Por otro lado, el peso fresco y seco de los fragmentos recolectados fue mayor en los nidos del parche de bosque El Vínculo y no hubo diferencias significativas entre el número de fragmentos de hojas recolectados en las pistas de forrajeo. La cantidad de bocas activas fue la única variable que presentó significancia estadística para los nidos de La Pachuca. Se interpreta que la actividad de forrajeo es consistente en los diferentes parches de bosque seco que subsisten en la zona suroccidente de Colombia.

Abstract In order to get a broad knowledge of the herbivory of the leaf cutting ant, Atta cephalotes, in the tropical dry forest, the foraging activity of twelve ant nests was studied in two patches of the dry forest: six in El Vínculo regional natural park in the Department of Valle del Cauca and six in La Pachuca in the Department of Cauca. From an inventory of nests present in each patch, a greater concentration of them was found in the edge and matrix area with respect to the interior of the patches being 84.11% for El Vínculo and 100% for La Pachuca. With the purpose of establishing if these areas offer more and better resources to the ants than the interior of the patches, a total of 300 leaf fragments that the ants transported were collected one meter from the main mound and 1.2 meters from the soil on the tree track in each nest between October 2015 and June 2016. Once the plant species were identified, the foliar area of these fragments were measured and weighed in their fresh and dry forms. In addition, different metric measures such as length, width and length of the foraging tracks were taken in each nest and the number of inactive and active mounds was made. It was found that the nests are founded at the edge and the matrix because they represent areas with initial successional processes that warrant the presence of pioneer plants with very palatable leaves and suitable for the consumption of the ants. The Fabaceae species was the most preferred. The foliar area of the plant fragments did not show significant differences between the diverse collections, nor among nests. On the other hand, the fresh and dry weight of the fragments collected was greater in the nests of El Vínculo forest patch and there were no significant differences among the number of leaf fragments collected on the foraging tracks. The number of active mounds was the only variable that presented statistical significance for the nests of La Pachuca forest patch. It is interpreted that the foraging activity is consistent in the different patches of dry forest that subsist in the southwestern region of Colombia.

RESUMEN Se conoce poco sobre redes tróficas implicando hormigas que depredan broca del café. Con el objetivo de evaluar la interacción depredador-presa usando análisis molecular se usó dicha tecnología para identificar la broca del café (Hypothenemus hampei) en el contenido estomacal de la hormiga Wasmannia auropunctata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Colonias artificiales de W. auropunctata fueron alimentadas en condiciones de laboratorio con broca, mientras los controles fueron alimentadas con presas distintas. Se observó amplificación de los tres cebadores en el 96,59% de las muestras de las hormigas con consumo de broca, sin embargo la amplificación también se presentó en el 83,72% de las muestras sin consumo, detectando la unión de los cebadores evaluados a sitios inespecíficos de las hormigas control. Se encontró que los cebadores no fueron específicos para broca. Diferentes estudios argumentan que el ADN del depredador puede presentarse en exceso en comparación al ADN de la presa y, en consecuencia, las secuencias menos concentradas de la presa a menudo no amplifican y los cebadores tienden a unirse a regiones inespecíficas del ADN del depredador, generando falsos positivos. Se concluye que el análisis molecular representa una herramienta adicional para detectar depredación en este sistema pero que aún requiere mayor especificidad.

ABSTRACT There is a small knowledge about trophic webs implying ants that predate coffee berry borer. With the objective of evaluating the predator-prey interaction using molecular analysis, this technology was used to identify the coffee berry borer (CBB) (Hypothenemus hampei) in the gut contents of the ant Wasmannia auropunctata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Artificial colonies of W. auropunctata were fed under laboratory conditions with CBB, while controls were fed with a different prey. Amplification of the three primers was observed in 96,59% of the ant samples with CBB consumption, however the amplification was also present in 83,72% of the samples without consumption, which means that the primers attached to non-specific sites of control ants. We found that the primers were not specific to the CBB. Various studies argue that DNA from predator may be in excess compared to DNA from the prey and, as a consequence, less concentrated sequences of prey often do not amplify and primers tend to bind to non-specific regions of the predator DNA, generating false positives. It is concluded that the molecular analysis represents an additional tool to detect predation on this system but still requires to be more specific.

RESUMO Pouco se sabe sobre redes tróficas que implicam formigas que depredam a broca do cafeiro. Com o objetivo de avaliar a interação predador-presa utilizando o análise molecular, a referida tecnologia foi utilizada para identificar a broca do café (Hypothenemus hampei) no conteúdo estomacal da formiga Wasmannia auropunctata (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). As colônias artificiais de W. auropunctata foram alimentadas em condições laboratoriais com broca, enquanto os controles foram alimentados com diferentes presas. A amplificação dos três iniciadores foi observada em 96,59% das amostras de formigas com consumo de broca, no entanto, a amplificação também estava presente em 83,72% das amostras sem consumo, detetando a ligação dos iniciadores avaliados para locais não específicos de formigas controle. Descobrimos que os iniciadores não eram específicos da broca. Diferentes estudos argumentam que o DNA predador pode estar em excesso em comparação com o DNA da presa e, como consequência, as sequências de presas menos concentradas geralmente não amplificam e os iniciadores tendem a se ligar a regiões não específicas de o DNA do predador, generando falsos positivos. Concluise que a análise molecular representa uma ferramenta adicional para detectar predação neste sistema, mas ainda requer ser mais específica.

RESUMEN Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Lepidoptera, Crambidae) es una plaga Neotropical de las solanáceas que ha evolucionado en cuatro razas por asociación a hospederos de esta familia. En este estudio, se evaluó el asilamiento precigótico y postcigótico en generaciones parentales y F1 colectadas en Solanum lycopersicum (S. 1), S. quitoense (S. q) y S. betaceum (S. b) representando razas con tamaños de genitales medio (S. 1, S. q) y grande (S. b). Se obtuvieron 617 adultos en el laboratorio y 106 de ellos copularon. Se encontró un espermatóforo en la bursa copulatrix de cada hembra sugiriendo monoandría. Los cruces entre los adultos fueron en su mayoría asociativos. Un tercio de las hembras ovipositaron, pero las hembras de los cruces ♀. b x ♂ S. 1, ♀. 1 x ♂ S. b y S. 1 x S. 1 no lo hicieron. En el cruce ♀ S. 1 x ♂ S. q y su recíproco, la progenie F1 se desarrolló hasta larva. El éxito reproductivo sólo ocurrió en los cruces: S. q x S. q, ♀. q x ♂ S. b y su recíproco, toda su progenie alcanzó la adultez. La población parental mostró diferencias en las mediciones de pupa y adulto de acuerdo con su hospedero. Los resultados del aislamiento reproductivo sugieren que la diferenciación en diferentes razas es relevante para la mejora del manejo de la especie, especialmente cuando se presenta aislamiento reproductivo entre estas. Se plantea el uso de las plantas hospederas en simpatría como una alternativa para el manejo del insecto, puesto que los híbridos tienen baja supervivencia y evaluar la posibilidad de diferenciación de componentes de feromonas por los resultados obtenidos en el apareamiento asociativo en la especie.

ABSTRACT Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Lepidoptera, Crambidae) is a Neotropical Solanaceae pest that has evolved into four host races due to host plant association. In this study, prezygotic and postzygotic isolation were evaluated in parental and F1 generations collected from Solanum lycopersicum (S. 1), S. quitoense (S. q) and S. betaceum (S. b), representing medium size (S. 1, S. q) and large size genitalia races (S. b). 617 adults were obtained in the laboratory and 106 copulated. One spermatophore per female was found in the bursa copulatrix, suggesting monoandry. Crosses between adults mostly occurred assortatively. A third of the female's eggs laid occurred, but females from ♀. b x ♂ S. 1, ♀. 1 x ♂S. b and S. 1 x S. 1 did not. In the cross, ♀. 1 x ♂ S. q and its reciprocal F1 progeny developed into larvae. Reproductive success only occurred in three crosses: S. q x S. q, ♀. q x ♂ S. b and its reciprocal progeny. All the progeny from these crosses reached adulthood. The parental population showed differences in pupae and adult measurements according to host. The results on reproductive isolation obtained here suggest speciation in N. elegantalis due to host race differentiation which is relevant for the improvement of the management of this species, especially when the species has evolved reproductive isolation among races. We suggest that the use of their host plants in sympatry might reduce N. elegantalis densities in the field since hybrids between its races have low survival rates and to evaluate the possibility of pheromone composition differentiation among races given the results on assortative mating obtained here.

Resumen La investigación sobre los ecosistemas de café ha recibido considerable atención en las últimas décadas. El cultivo de café ha desplazado la vegetación natural y su diversidad biológica asociada. Con el objeto de caracterizar la diversidad específica de hormigas del suelo, identificar los grupos funcionales en dos sistemas cafeteros contrastantes y relacionar esta diversidad con algunas características del hábitat, se muestrearon ocho cafetales con sombra (CCS), ocho a libre exposición (CLE) y cuatro parches de bosque en la zona cafetalera del sur de Colombia. Se trabajó en dos transectos con 12 estaciones de muestreo, en cada una se empleó búsqueda activa, trampa de caída y cernido de horajasca. Se evaluaron nueve variables del hábitat para caracterizar cada sitio y relacionar estos valores con la diversidad de hormigas. Se recolectaron 15 666 individuos en 92 morfoespecies, Myrmicinae fue la subfamilia con mayor representación. La cobertura del muestreo presentó un déficit inferior al 5 %. Las curvas de abundancia relativas, mostraron diferencias en el ensamblaje de hormigas. Los bosques presentaron comunidades de hormigas más diversas que las de los otros usos del suelo y mayor número de especies exclusivas; el CCS mantiene el 80.3 % de la diversidad de los bosques frente al 62.3 % de ésta en CLE. En síntesis, la fauna de hormigas en los cafetales con sombra es más rica y equitativa que en los cultivos a libre exposición, reforzando la idea de que la implementación de la sombra favorece el establecimiento de la fauna de hormigas y, por ende, la funcionalidad ecológica.

Abstract The coffee cultivation has displaced natural vegetation and its associated biological diversity. The present study describes the diversity of ground-dwelling ants on eight plantations where coffee is grown in the shade (SHD), eight plantations where coffee is grown under unshaded coffee (SUN) and four patches of forest (FOS) in a coffee-growing region of Colombia. The research was conducted in transects composed of 12 sampling stations, each of which employed active collection, pitfall traps and litter sifting. Nine habitat variables were analyzed to characterize each site, and these values were related to the diversity of ants and functional groups. A total of 92 morphospecies were collected. Myrmicinae was the subfamily with the highest representation. The sample coverage presented a deficit of less than 5 %. The rank abundance curves exhibited differences in the ant assemblages. The ant communities found in the forest exhibited greater diversity and a larger number of exclusive species than the communities found in locations of other land uses; the SHD and SUN communities were characterized by 80.3 % and 62.3 %, respectively, of the diversity found in the forest communities. The functional similarity index as adapted for guilds by Sørensen reveals a high degree of similarity in the structure of their ant communities, but less so in their composition. The shaded coffee plantations have a richer and more equitable ant fauna than the exposed coffee plantations, reinforcing the idea that shade cultivation favors the establishment of ant fauna and, consequently, ecological functionality.

Resumen Existe una alta diversidad de insectos asociados a la floración del aguacate. Aunque las abejas son los principales polinizadores del cultivo, especies de distintos gremios tróficos frecuentan sus inflorescencias y poco se conoce sobre su identidad taxonómica. En el municipio de Morales, Cauca, Colombia, se seleccionaron dos parcelas, en las cuales se escogieron aleatoriamente cuatro árboles de aguacate y, cada hora, durante 20 minutos, se realizó la captura de insectos con una jama y el registro de su comportamiento en 10 inflorescencias/árbol entre las 07:00-17:00 horas. Se evaluaron semanalmente los periodos de visita a las flores y la carga polínica de los insectos. Las evaluaciones se efectuaron durante dos épocas de floración. Se encontró alta diversidad de insectos, siendo mayor en los dípteros Lucilia eximia, Chrysomya putoria, Palpada scutellaris y Ornidia obesa. Los insectos presentaron picos de visita floral entre las 10:00-11:00 y 14:00-15:00 horas y, aunque con una baja cantidad de polen en sus cuerpos, se observaron colectando néctar, en cópula o posados en las flores. Esta investigación revela que existe una alta diversidad de dípteros asociados a la floración de Persea americana que puede contribuir a la dispersión del polen en los huertos y diversas funciones biológicas.

Abstract There is a high diversity of insects associated to the flowering of avocado plants. Although bees are the main pollinators of the crop, species of different trophic guilds visit avocado inflorescences, yet little is known about them. In the municipality of Morales, Cauca, Colombia, two plots were selected and four trees were randomly selected from each one. Insects were collected with a net every hour for 20 minutes and the behavior of visiting insects was recorded in 10 inflorescences/tree. Insect collecting and observations were carried between 07:00-17:00 hours. The periods of visit to the flowers and the pollen load of the insects were evaluated weekly. Evaluations were carried out during two flowering periods. A high diversity of species was found associated with avocado inflorescences, being particularly higher in the order Diptera, with species such as Lucilia eximia, Chrysomya putoria, Palpada scutellaris and Ornidia obesa. Insect floral visitors presented peaks between 10:00-11:00 and 14:0015:00 hours. Although a low amount of pollen on their bodies was observed, insects were collecting nectar, copulating or perched on flowers. This research shows that there is a high diversity of dipterans associated with the flowering of Persea americana that could contribute to pollen dispersal in orchards and associated biological functions.

Resumen Los insectos son considerados los principales portadores de polen del aguacate Persea americana cv. Hass. Con el objetivo de determinar el efecto de su exclusión en la fructificación del cultivo, se planteó esta investigación en dos plantaciones ubicadas en Popayán (Cauca, Colombia). En cada finca se marcaron 10 árboles y en cada árbol 20 inflorescencias. Se evaluaron tres tratamientos: (a) inflorescencias expuestas a la actividad de los insectos (control), (b) cubrimiento de inflorescencias con bolsas de tela, y (c) aplicación de insecticida una sola vez y cubrimiento de inflorescencias con bolsas de tela. El número de frutos cuajados (fructificación) difirió significativamente entre tratamientos y fincas, en el tratamiento con inflorescencias expuestas hubo un cuajado de fruto 7 veces más alto respecto a los tratamientos con inflorescencias cubiertas e inflorescencias cubiertas + insecticida, los cuales no presentaron diferencias estadísticas significativas entre ellos. Se obtienen entre 12- 21 frutos/inflorescencia cuando se permite el acceso de los insectos a las flores, comparado con 2-3 frutos/inflorescencia cuando se excluyen. Se concluye que en la polinización del cultivo de P. americana cv. Hass interviene el viento, sin embargo, los insectos tienen un rol clave como portadores de polen.

Abstract Insects are considered the main carriers of avocado Persea americana cv. Hass. In order to determine the effect of their exclusion in the fruiting of the crop, this research was proposed in two plantations located in Popayán, Cauca, Colombia. In each farm 10 trees were marked and in each tree 20 inflorescences. Three treatments were evaluated: (a) inflorescences exposed to insect activity (control), (b) covering of inflorescences with cloth bags, and (c) application of insecticide only once and covering of inflorescences with cloth bags. The number of fruits set (fructification) differed significantly between treatments and farms, in the treatment with exposed inflorescences there was a fruit set seven (7) times higher with respect to the treatments with covered inflorescences and covered inflorescences + insecticide, which did not present significant statistical differences among them. Between 12-21 fruits / inflorescence are obtained when the insects are allowed access to the flowers, compared to 2-3 fruits / inflorescence when they are excluded. It is concluded that in the pollination of the crop of P. americana cv. Hass intervenes the wind, however insects have a key role as carriers of pollen.

Resumen Después de 106 años, se confirma la presencia de Omalodes (Omalodes) fassli en Colombia y se aportan nuevos datos de su distribución para el país. Este representa el primer registro de la especie en cultivos de plátano (Musa paradisiaca) y se destaca su potencial papel como controlador del picudo del plátano, plaga clave de este cultivo en el mundo.

Abstract After 106 years, the presence of Omalodes (Omalodes) fassli in Colombia has been confirmed, and new distributional data for the country has been provided. This is the first report of the species on banana crops (Musa paradisiaca), it highlights its potential role in the control of the banana weevil, a key pest of this crop worldwide.

El presente estudio se propuso localizar, cuantificar y caracterizar los nidos de hormigas arrieras en dos sistemas cafeteros de manejo contraste en los municipios de Popayán y Cajibío en el Cauca. Para este fin, se seleccionaron ocho cafetales con sombra, ocho cafetales a libre exposición y cuatro fragmentos de bosque. En cada sitio se realizaron recorridos y se ubicaron los nidos activos, en cada uno, se recolectaron e identificaron los individuos de diferentes castas y se midieron los soldados. Se calculó el área de los nidos, el número y tamaño de las pistas de forrajeo y se registraron las plantas defoliadas. Se relacionó el número y área de los nidos con variables ambientales y se correlacionó el tamaño de los soldados con el área de los nidos. Se recolectaron 276 individuos pertenecientes a cephalotes. Se registraron cuatro nidos en fragmentos de bosque, ocho en cafetales con sombra y nueve en cafetales a libre exposición. El área de los nidos varió entre 0,90 y 758,34 m², con pistas de 1 a 32 m de longitud. El área de los nidos en los cafetales a libre exposición presentó diferencias significativas con respecto a los ubicados en cafetales con sombra y fragmentos de bosque, siendo estos últimos los de mayor tamaño. Se encontró una correlación positiva entre el tamaño de los nidos y riqueza arbórea, cobertura de dosel y espesor de hojarasca, mientras que fue inversa con la temperatura ambiente. El ancho de la cabeza se correlacionó de forma positiva con el área de los nidos. Se registraron 32 especies de plantas con signos de defoliación por A. cephalotes, lo que confirma el hábito generalista de esta especie. Se resalta la importancia de mantener especies asociadas al cultivo de café como recursos alternativos y de protección al forrajeo de la hormiga.

The aim of the present study was to localize, quantify and characterize the nests of the leaf cutting ants under two contrasting management systems in coffee areas of the municipalities of Popayan and Cajibio, Department of Cauca. Eight shaded coffee plantations, 8 free standing coffee plantations and 4 forest fragments were selected. At each site rounds were made and active search for nests was carried out; in each site individuals from different castes were collected and identified and soldiers were measured. The nests areas were calculated as well as the number and size of the foraging tracks, and the defoliated plants were recorded. The number and area of the nests were related to environmental variables and the size of soldiers in the nest area was correlated. A total of 276 individuals form Atta cephalotes was collected. Four nests were recorded in forest fragments, eight in shaded coffee plantations and nine in free standing coffee plantations. Nest areas varied between 0.90 and 758.34 m², with trails from 1 to 32 m length. The area of the nests located in free standing coffee plantations showed significant differences in relation to nests located in shaded coffee plantations and in forest fragments, the latter being the largest ones. A positive correlation between size of the nests and tree richness, canopy cover and thickness of fallen leaves was found, while it was inversely correlated with room temperature. The width of the head was positively correlated with the area of the nests. A total of 32 plant species with signs of defoliation by A. cephalotes was recorded confirming the general habit of these species. The importance of maintaining species associated to the coffee crop as alternative resources and for the protection of the ant foraging is highlighted.
