Resumen Siguiendo el trabajo anterior sobre la Expedición Científica de Exploración de la Sección de Arqueología y Etnografía del Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileño, en ese texto será evidenciada la relación entre la ilustración etnográfica y la producción artística promovida por la corte del emperador Don Pedro II y por el Academia Imperial de Bellas Artes de Rio de Janeiro. En particular, serán tratados dos casos: las esculturas figurando indios norte-americanos ejecutadas por el alemán Ferdinand Pettrich en Estados Unidos entre 1835 y 1845, re-elaboradas durante la estada brasileña del artista hasta 1857 y donadas al papa Pio IX, hoy en el Museo Etnologico Missionario en Ciudad del Vaticano. El caso más relevante para nuestro análisis, sin embargo, es el del monumento ecuestre de Don Pedro I realizado por el escultor francés Louis Rochet en Rio de Janeiro entre 1857 y 1862, en que la ilustración etnográfica se une con intenciones conmemorativas y soluciones estéticas de fuerte impacto para el arte de la época.

Abstract Following previous work about the Scientific Expedition of the Section of Archaeology and Ethnography of Brazilian Geographic and Historical Institute, it will be featured in this paper the relationship between ethnographic illustration and artistic production promoted by the court of Emperor Don Pedro II and Academia Imperial de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro. In particular, two cases will be discussed: the sculptures representing North American Indians executed by the German artist Ferdinand Pettrich in United States between 1835 and 1845, reworked during his Brazilian sojourn until 1857 and donated to Pope Pius IX which are now in the Museo Etnologico Missionario in Vatican City. Most relevant to our analysis, however, is the case of the equestrian monument of the Emperor Don Pedro I executed by French sculptor Louis Rochet in Rio de Janeiro between 1857 and 1862, in which the ethnographic illustration was mixed with epic intentions and aesthetic solutions which had strong impact on the art of the period.

Estudo crítico sobre obras de dois pintores italianos, Mario Mafai e Gino Bonichi (dito Scipione), pertencentes à Scuola Romana di Pittura, presentes no Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Universidade de São Paulo (MAC-USP): Rapaz e Natureza-morta (Mafai) e Oceano Indiano (Scipione) integram o primeiro acervo do atual museu, e são advindas da antiga coleção do Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM-SP), formada por Ciccillo Matarazzo. Além de estudo iconográfico das obras em si, vem adjunto um estudo sobre sua relação com os acervos de arte moderna paulistanos, em formação em meados do século XX, de forte relação com a arte moderna italiana e os projetos político-culturais de ítalo-descendentes presentes em São Paulo, traço marcante do cenário cultural da cidade.

Critical study about two italian painters, Mario Mafai and Gino Bonichi (named "Scipione"), from the Scuola Romana di Pittura, and their works at the University of Sao Paulo's Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC-USP): Rapaz and Natura Morta (Mafai) and Oceano Indiano (Scipione) belong to the first collection of this museum, that comes from the ancient Modern Art Museum of São Paulo (MAM-SP), started by Ciccillo Matarazzo. Beyond the iconography study, there is a study about the role of these works and their school with the main collections of modern art at São Paulo, started by important Italian families at the city, at the middle of 20th Century.

Em 1547, o filósofo florentino Benedetto Varchi pronunciou uma série de conferências, chamadas de Lezioni, sobre o soneto de Michelangelo "Non há l'ottimo artista alcun concetto" e sobre a questão da superioridade da escultura, da pintura ou da poesia na hierarquia das artes. Varchi acrescentou ao texto das conferências, publicado em 1550, cartas de famosos artistas florentinos e do próprio Michelangelo sobre essa questão. A partir das Lezioni de Varchi, este escrito pretende contribuir para entender de que maneira a poesia de Michelangelo exprime seu pensamento em relação à escultura e à criação artística e como isso influenciou a interpretação da obra do mestre dada pelo teóricos da época.

In 1547 the Florentine philosopher Benedetto Varchi gave some lectures, denominated Lezione about Michelangelo's sonnet Non há l'ottimo artista alcun concetto and the issue of superiority of sculpture, painting or poetry in the hierarchy of arts. Varchi added to his lectures, published in 1550, letters written by famous Florentine artists and by Michelangelo himself. Taking Lezione de Varchi as a point of departure this text intend to contribute to understand how Michelangelo's poetry express his thought toward sculpture and the artist creation and how it has influenced the theoretical interpretation of the master's work at his time.
