Abstract This research seeks to delve into the dynamics of participation within news platforms curated by non-professional journalists residing in inland Portugal. Through an exploratory study, two initiatives originating from communities located in the country’s inland areas are analysed: Vela Notícias, in the Centre region, and Jornal da Aldeia, in the Alentejo region. These initiatives serve as empirical objects illustrating a phenomenon that reflects the shift away from traditional media, the community’s eagerness to disseminate locally pertinent knowledge, and the citizens’ yearning for social and cultural representation. Both initiatives have emerged in ageing and sparsely populated regions, with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, according to the 2021 Census (Instituto Nacional de Estatística, 2021). To understand and address these concerns, alongside a thorough review of pertinent literature, semi-structured interviews were conducted as a methodological approach involving participants engaged in information production for the two community media outlets. The significance of this study lies in unravelling the intricacies of proximity communication dynamics spearheaded by non-journalist citizens. The residents of both parishes actively contribute to content creation, topic selection, editing, and distribution of the newspapers. Production operates outside the norms of journalistic selection, filtering, and hierarchy. Nevertheless, interviewees exhibit keen interest and confidence in the published information. The motivation for participation stems from a desire to share common values and cultural connections, fostering a sense of belonging and social responsibility.

Resumo Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo compreender as dinâmicas de participação presentes em veículos informativos produzidos por cidadãos não-jornalistas, no interior de Portugal. A partir de um estudo exploratório, são analisadas duas iniciativas desenvolvidas por comunidades localizadas no interior do país, o Vela Notícias, na região Centro, e o Jornal da Aldeia, na região do Alentejo. Estas são entendidas como objetos empíricos de um fenómeno que reflete o distanciamento e os constrangimentos dos média tradicionais, o desejo das populações destes territórios de partilharem conhecimento de interesse local e a necessidade de os cidadãos se sentirem representados social e culturalmente. As duas iniciativas surgiram em regiões desertificadas, com menos de 1.000 habitantes, e envelhecidas, segundo os Censos 2021 (Instituto Nacional de Estatística, 2021). A fim de compreender e discutir tais questões, além da revisão da literatura pertinente ao tema, realizaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas, como procedimento metodológico, aos participantes envolvidos na produção informativa dos dois média comunitários. A importância do estudo consiste em compreender dinâmicas comunicacionais de proximidade que envolvem cidadãos não-jornalistas. Os cidadãos das duas freguesias participam na criação de conteúdos, na escolha dos assuntos, na edição e na distribuição dos periódicos. A produção não está submetida às lógicas de seleção, filtragem e hierarquização jornalísticas. Ainda assim, os entrevistados demonstram interesse e confiança nas informações publicadas. O interesse em participar relaciona-se com o desejo de partilha de valores comuns e vínculos culturais, que contam ainda com o sentimento de pertença e de responsabilidade social.

ABSTRACT Polycystic liver disease, a hereditary pathology, usually manifests as autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. The many cysts in the liver cause massive hepatomegaly, majorly affecting the patient’s quality of life. In cases of refractory symptoms, liver transplantation is the only treatment choice. A 43-year-old woman was followed up as a hepatology outpatient in August 2020, with a progressive increase in abdominal volume, lower limb edema, and cachexia. The patient was diagnosed with polycystic renal and liver disease with massive hepatomegaly in March 2021, a combined kidney-liver transplant. Liver size represented 13% of the patient’s corporal composition, weighing 8.6kg. The patient was discharged on the 7th postoperative day with no complications. Only 10-20% of patients with polycystic liver disease have clinical manifestations, most of which result from hepatomegaly. An increase in liver volume deteriorates liver function until the condition becomes end-stage liver disease, as kidney function is already compromised; liver-kidney transplantation remains the only treatment choice. ABSTRACT Introduction: many revascularization techniques were designed to reduce the imbalance of ischemia-reperfusion injury. This study’s objective is to evaluate retrograde reperfusion (RR) compared to sequential anterograde reperfusion (AR), with and without the washout technique (WO). Method: this prospective cohort study collected data from 94 deceased donor orthotopic liver transplants and divided it into three groups: RR with WO (RR+WO), AP with WO (AR+WO), and AP without WO (AR). This study did not assign the reperfusion technique to the participants. The primary outcome considered the early graft dysfunction, and secondary outcomes included post-reperfusion syndrome (PRS), post-reperfusion lactate, surgery fluid balance, and vasoactive drug dose during the surgery. Results: 87 patients were submitted to the final analysis-29 in the RR+WO group, 27 in the AR+WO group, and 31 in the AR group. Marginal grafts prevalence was not significantly different between the groups (34% vs. 22% vs. 23%; p=0.49) and early graft dysfunction occurred at the same rate (24% vs. 26% vs. 19%; p=0.72). RR+WO reduced serum post-reperfusion lactate (p=0.034) and the incidence of significant PRS (17% vs. 33% vs. 55%; p=0.051), but norepinephrine dosing >0.5mcg/kg/min were not different during the surgery (20,7% vs. 29,6% vs. 35,5%, p=0.45). RESUMO Introdução: várias técnicas de reperfusão foram desenvolvidas a fim de reduzir o dano da lesão induzida por isquemia-reperfusão. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a reperfusão retrograda (RR) comparado com a reperfusão anterógrada (AR), com e sem a realização da técnica de lavagem do enxerto (WO). Métodos: coorte prospectiva com 94 transplantes ortotópicos de fígado de doador falecido divididos em três grupos: RR com WO (RR+WO), reperfusão anterógrada com WO (AR+WO), e AR sem WO (AR). Este estudo não designou a técnica de reperfusão entre os participantes. O desfecho primário considerou a disfunção precoce do enxerto, e os desfechos secundários incluíram a síndrome pós-reperfusão (SPR), lactato pós-reperfusão, balanço hídrico operatório, e uso de drogas vasoativas durante o ato peratório. ABSTRACT A previous study revealed that modern potato cultivars used in Brazil have higher commercial tuber yield than old cultivars. The objective of the present study was to clarify which morphological characters influence the yield gain of modern cultivars. Two field experiments were performed in Brazil: in Guarapuava-PR and Brasilia-DF. The treatments consisted of six cultivars, classified according to origin and year of release: Bintje (European, 1910), Baronesa (Brazilian, 1955), Monalisa (European, 1982), Agata (European, 1990), Catucha (Brazilian, 1995) and BRS Clara (Brazilian, 2010). These were the main cultivars used in southern Brazil in the last 65 years and represent 100 years of breeding. A randomized complete block design with six treatments and four replications was used. The following plant morphological characters were evaluated at four growth stages (the beginning of plant development, the beginning of tuberization, maximum shoot growth and tuber bulking stages): leaf area index, specific leaf area, number of main stems, initiated and bulked tubers. At 15 days after emergence, modern cultivars have higher leaf area index and bulked tubers compared to older cultivars. Also, a larger number of mainstems and smaller specific leaf area were observed in modern cultivars. A high leaf area index at the beginning of the growing development combined with a large number of bulked tubers contributed to the increase of the yield potential of modern cultivars. RESUMO Um estudo anterior revelou que as cultivares modernas de batata, cultivadas no Brasil, têm maior produtividade comercial de tubérculos do que as cultivares antigas. O presente estudo teve como objetivo identificar quais caracteres morfológicos influenciam o ganho de produtividade das cultivares modernas. Dois experimentos de campo foram realizados no Brasil: em Guarapuava-PR e Brasília-DF. Os tratamentos consistiram de seis cultivares, classificadas de acordo com a origem e o ano de lançamento: Bintje (europeia, 1910), Baronesa (brasileira, 1955), Monalisa (europeia, 1982), Ágata (europeia, 1990), Catucha (brasileira, 1995) e BRS Clara (brasileira, 2010). Essas foram as principais cultivares utilizadas no sul do Brasil nos últimos 65 anos e representam 100 anos de melhoramento genético. Foi utilizado delineamento em blocos casualizados com seis tratamentos e quatro repetições. Abstract The emergence of experiences of production and circulation of news content generated by non-journalists is a growing phenomenon, particularly in the last two decades, which causes changes in the media ecosystem, requires the discussion of ethical issues and about trust and credibility, and imposes a set of challenges to traditional journalism. ABSTRACT Purpose: This theoretical essay aims to explore sustainable consumption, emphasizing the sharing of representations with business proposals and government policies. Originality/value: Through consumption, gains in quality of life and forms of social insertion are created by social businesses. Studies on social representations can indicate the sharing of views between different social actors, such as companies, governments and consumers. The text continues with a discussion on the theory of social representations and the dynamics of sustainable consumption. Social representations guide the views, actions, and attitudes of individuals, including when it comes to insertion in the dynamics of consumption. Subsequently, business proposals for the base of the pyramid are highlighted, discussing different possible scenarios for their relationships with consumers and government policies. Design/methodology/approach: The theoretical essay is characterized by the development of theory as a conceptual production, in which logic takes the place of data for evaluation and elaboration of propositions. Findings: A greater or lesser sharing of representations allows for the design of different possible scenarios for the relationships between consumers with a moralistic or hedonistic vision, social or traditional business proposals, and governments with policies for sustainable or spurious development. RESUMO Objetivo: O presente ensaio teórico tem o objetivo de explorar o consumo sustentável, enfatizando o compartilhamento de representações com as propostas de negócios e políticas governamentais. Originalidade/valor: Por meio do consumo, ganhos em qualidade de vida e formas de inserção social são criados pelos negócios sociais. Os estudos sobre representações sociais podem indicar o compartilhamento de visões entre diferentes atores sociais, tais como empresas, governos e consumidores. O texto segue com uma discussão sobre a teoria das representações sociais e as dinâmicas de consumo sustentável. As representações sociais orientam as visões, ações e posturas dos indivíduos, inclusive quando se trata da inserção nas dinâmicas de consumo. Posteriormente, destacam-se as propostas de negócios para a base da pirâmide e discutem-se os diferentes cenários possíveis para as suas relações com os consumidores e as políticas governamentais. Abstract Based on the identification and analysis of proposals presented by municipal public administrators, this paper notes the relationship between digital technologies and general security in Brazil. The government programs prepared by the current mayors of all capitals of the country in the last municipal election (2020), and filed with the Superior Electoral Court, were selected as a research corpus. As the main results of the analysis, we lay out the following: the forecast of the use of digital technologies in public security by 15 of the current 26 mayors of capital cities, the party pulverization and the geographic diversity of these managers, the concealment of potential problems in the application of these technologies. Adopting the notions of surveillance capitalism (Zuboff, 2018/2020) and algorithmic racism (Silva, 2019), we conclusively understand that digital technologies applied to public security must consider the possible ethical, social, political, and cultural implications, especially in a country marked by structural racism, so that, in fighting crime and expanding protection, violence against historically discriminated groups is not perpetuated.

Resumo A partir da identificação e análise de propostas apresentadas por gestores públicos municipais, o presente artigo tece apontamentos sobre a relação entre tecnologias digitais e segurança pública no Brasil. Como corpus de pesquisa, foram selecionados os programas de governo elaborados pelos atuais prefeitos de todas as capitais do país na última eleição municipal (2020) e protocolados no Tribunal Superior Eleitoral. Como principais resultados da análise, apontam-se aqui: a previsão de uso de tecnologias digitais na segurança pública por 15 dos atuais 26 prefeitos de capitais, a pulverização partidária e a diversidade geográfica desses gestores, o ocultamento de potenciais problemas na aplicação dessas tecnologias. Adotando as noções de capitalismo de vigilância (Zuboff, 2018/2020) e racismo algorítmico (Silva, 2019) compreende-se em termos conclusivos que, sobretudo em um país marcado pelo racismo estrutural, as tecnologias digitais aplicadas à segurança pública devem ser pautadas considerando as possíveis implicações éticas, sociais, políticas e culturais, de modo que, na busca pelo combate à criminalidade e por ampliação da segurança, não se perpetue violências contra grupos historicamente discriminados.

Abstract Background Stroke is one of the most common causes of death and incapacity in the world. The benefits of reperfusion therapies and hospitalization in neurologic intensive care units (ICUs) are undeniable. However, these treatments are not widely available in a continental-sized country like Brazil. Objective To describe the treatment for ischemic stroke and the functional outcome 90 days after the hospitalization of patients in the Brazilian countryside. Methods Observational, prospective case series study design. The data collected refer to randomly selected patients hospitalized in 3 hospitals in the south region of the state of Bahia between December 2018 and December 2019. Results The population consisted of 61 consecutive patients. They were elderly (median age: 62 years old); with a predominance of hypertension (82%); and were light to moderate stroke cases (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS] median: 7). A total of 37.7% of the cases arrived at the hospital in a < 4.5-hour window but received no reperfusion therapy. Of these, 94.3% were discharged from the hospital with a prescription for antiplatelets or anticoagulant. A total of 64.1% of the patients received a statin prescription. At the end of the follow-up period, the general mortality was 21%. Almost half of the population (47.9%) evolved to an unfavored outcome (modified Rankin scale [mRs]: 3 to 6). Métodos Estudo observacional, prospectivo, tipo série de casos. Os dados foram coletados de pacientes consecutivos, aleatoriamente selecionados, internados em 3 hospitais da região Sul da Bahia entre dezembro de 2018 e dezembro de 2019. Resultados A população amostral consistiu de 61 pacientes. Houve predomínio de idosos (mediana de idade: 62 anos), hipertensos (82%), com AVC leve a moderado (mediana do National Institute ok Health Stroke Scale [NIHSS, na sigla em inglês]: 7), dos quais 37,7% chegaram ao hospital com < 4,5 horas de sintomas, mas não receberam terapias de reperfusão. Um total de 94,3% dos pacientes recebeu alta com prescrição de antiagregante plaquetário ou anticoagulante e 64,1% receberam prescrição de estatina. Ao final do período de seguimento, a mortalidade geral foi de 21% e quase metade da população amostral (47,9%) evoluiu com desfecho desfavorável (escala de Rankin modificada: 3 a 6). Conclusão A população amostral apresentou características sociodemográficas e comorbidades semelhantes às de outros recortes nacionais. Terapias de reperfusão não foram realizadas e o tratamento foi basicamente orientado para profilaxia secundária. Abstract Estuaries are extremely valuable ecosystems and have been affected by several anthropogenic activities from urban growth and industrial development, such as the release of untreated efuents which decrease water quality. This study aimed to evaluate the seasonal and temporal trophic status variation in the Formoso River Estuarine System (FRES), a tropical estuary. Three campaigns were carried out in each season (rainy and dry), during which surface water was sampled for abiotic parameter analyses. The TRIX index was used for trophic status assessment. For the temporal evaluation, a review of literature addressing the matter in the study area was conducted. Between 2017 and 2018, the TRIX index varied from a mean of 6 ± 0.2 upstream to 5 ± 0.4 downstream during the rainy season, indicating eutrophic conditions throughout most of the FRES extension, especially near the Formoso River, and from 6 ± 1 to 3 ± 0.8 during the dry season. Temporal analyses showed that in 2002 the overall mean TRIX index was 5.72 ± 0.4, decreasing in 2005 and 2014, and followed by an upwards trend. We conclude that the FRES is impacted by the release of untreated efuents such as sewage and fertilizers from the city of Rio Formoso and from various agricultural activities, which are more intense during the rainy season. Nevertheless, over time there were more critical scenarios pertaining to the trophic status. The present diagnosis reinforces the importance of public sanitation policies in estuarine regions and spatial planning instruments for pollution control in fishery areas.

Resumo: Estudo buscou analisar a dimensão institucional da cotonicultura convencional e orgânica; especificamente, as relações entre os estabelecimentos rurais e organizações governamentais. Em ambos os sistemas produtivos, convencional e orgânico, os produtores estão inseridos em diferentes ambientes institucionais. Esses ambientes incluem um capital social formado por relações de confiança e afinidades cognitivas. Este estudo tem como foco o capital social e as orientações para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Um estudo de casos múltiplos foi adotado com propósito explanatório. Esses casos referem-se a uma empresa de cotonicultura convencional e uma organização da sociedade civil dedicada à cotonicultura orgânica, ambas localizadas no estado do Piauí. Adotou-se uma perspectiva de análise comparativa com base nos elementos da análise de conteúdo. Os resultados mostraram que o negócio da cotonicultura convencional compreende relações com órgãos governamentais predominantemente orientados para propósitos de eficiência econômica, enquanto a associação de cotonicultura orgânica de base familiar compreende relações orientadas por objetivos econômicos, sociais e ambientais. O presente estudo amplia a discussão sobre esses temas, analisando a dimensão institucional orientada para o desenvolvimento sustentável.

Abstract: This study aimed to examine the institutional dimension of conventional and organic cotton farming; specifically, the relationships between farms and government organizations. In both, conventional and organic production systems, the farmers are located in varying institutional environments. These environments include a social capital formed by relationships of trust and cognitive affinities. This study focused on the social capital and guidelines for sustainable development. Multiple study cases were used for explanatory purposes. Such cases refer to a conventional cotton farming business and a civil society organization dedicated to organic cotton farming, both located in the state of Piauí. A comparative analysis perspective was adopted based on the elements of content analysis. The results showed that the conventional cotton farming business comprises relationships with governmental organizations that are predominantly oriented towards economic efficiency purposes, while the family-based organic cotton farming association comprises relationships oriented by economic, social, and environmental objectives. The present study extends the discussion on these topics by analyzing the institutional dimension oriented towards the sustainable development premises.

Resumo A bananicultura brasileira é uma das atividades agrícolas mais praticadas no cenário nacional, podendo ser altamente produtiva e economicamente rentável ao produtor que investe em tecnologia. Objetivou-se com este trabalho comparar a viabilidade econômica de dois manejos distintos de adubação no sistema de cultivo de bananeira ‘Prata-Anã’ clone Gorutuba de 1º ciclo. O tratamento convencional de adubação (MC), adotado pelo produtor (testemunha), foi comparado com o tratamento alternativo: manejo convencional + três condicionadores de solo + um bioestimulante (MC+3CS+1B). Os quatro produtos selecionados para o tratamento alternativo foram: calcário de conchas, Celtonita, Lithothamnium calcareum e Acadian. A aplicação dos quatro produtos no tratamento MC+3CS+1B proporcionou resultados satisfatórios no desempenho da cultura, principalmente pelo aumento de 4,032 toneladas/ha-1. O manejo alternativo MC+3CS+1B foi mais viável economicamente que o MC, pois o custo operacional total (1º + 2º ano) do manejo alternativo foi 6,71% maior que no manejo convencional; entretanto, a produtividade do tratamento alternativo foi 28,08% maior. O custo para produzir uma tonelada de banana foi R$ 2.456,91 no tratamento convencional e R$ 2.047,07 no tratamento alterativo, o que representa a redução de 16,68% do custo médio, indicando a viabilidade econômica deste tratamento.

Abstract Brazilian banana farming is one of the most important agricultural activities in the national scenario and can be highly productive and economically profitable for producers who invest in technology. The objective of this work was to compare the economic viability of two different fertilization managements in the cultivation system of 1st -cycle ‘Prata Anã’ Gorutuba bananas. The conventional fertilization treatment (CM), adopted by the producer (control), was compared with the alternative treatment: conventional management + 3 soil conditioners + 1 biostimulant (CM + 3SC + 1B). The four products selected for the alternative treatment were oyster shell limestone, Celtonite, Lithothamnium calcareum and Acadian. The application of the four products in the CM + 3SC + 1B treatment provided satisfactory results on crop performance, mainly due to the increase of 4.032 tons ha-1. The CM+3CS+1B alternative management was more economically viable than CM, as the total operational cost (1st + 2nd year) of the alternative management was 6.71% higher compared to the conventional management; however, the alternative treatment productivity was 28.08% higher. The cost to produce one ton of bananas was R$ 2.456,91 in the conventional treatment and R$ 2.047,07 in the alternative treatment, which represents a 16.68% reduction in the average cost, indicating the economic feasibility of this treatment.

Resumo Objetivos Medir o valor médio do ângulo de Southwick utilizando dois métodos diferentes, manual (1) e digital (2), e estabelecer um valor de normalidade. Métodos Estudo primariamente descritivo, realizado com 100 crianças e adolescentes. Foram excluídos indivíduos que apresentavam queixa ortopédica nos quadris e/ou joelhos, ou alterações de marcha. Para cada paciente, foi realizada uma radiografia na incidência lateral de Lowenstein, totalizando 100 radiografias e 200 quadris. O ângulo de Southwick foi medido de duas formas pelo mesmo pesquisador: pelo método convencional (1), traçando-se as retas com lápis e medindo o ângulo com o uso de goniômetro e negatoscópio, e por meio do editor de imagem GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP; código aberto), versão 2.7.0 (2), no qual foram traçadas as linhas e aferidos os ângulos de ambos os quadris em cada radiografia. Posteriormente, buscou-se avaliar a correlação entre os dois métodos e verificar o ângulo médio de Southwick correlacionando-o categoricamente por gênero, faixa etária e índice de massa corpórea (IMC) em adolescentes e crianças assintomáticos. Todas as radiografias foram autorizadas pelos responsáveis. O estudo foi aprovado pelo comitê de ética das instituições em que a pesquisa foi realizada. Resultados A média do ângulo de Southwick obtida pelo método convencional foi de 8,7º (±2,0º), e pelo método digital, foi de 9,9º (±1,8º). O ângulo obtido pelas duas formas teve significância estatística (p < 0,001). A maioria da população estudada (95%) tinha índice de massa corpórea (IMC) > 18,5, e a média dos ângulos esteve dentro do valor previamente estabelecido como normal (∼ 10º). Conclusão Demonstrou-se, pela primeira vez, utilizando uma amostra substanciosa, um valor normal do ângulo de Southwick medido em indivíduos assintomáticos. Além disso, o editor de imagem mostrou ser um método confiável para mensuração do ângulo de Southwick.

Abstract Objectives To measure the mean value of the Southwick angle using two different methods, the manual (1) and digital (2) methods, and to establish a normality value. Methods A primarily descriptive study with 100 children and adolescents. Individuals with orthopedic complaints regarding the hips and/or knees or gait alterations were excluded. For each patient, an X-ray was performed on the lateral incidence of Lowenstein, totaling 100 radiographs and 200 hips. The Southwick angle was measured in two different ways by the same researcher: the conventional method (1), tracing the lines with pencils and measuring the angle with the use of a goniometer and negatoscope, and through the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) image editor (open source), version 2.7.0 (2), in which the lines were plotted and the angles of both hips were gauged on each radiograph. Later, we sought to evaluate the correlation between the two methods and to verify the mean Southwick angle by categorically correlating it by gender, age group and body mass index (BMI) in asymptomatic children and adolescents. All radiographs were authorized by the children and adolescents' parents/legal guardians. The study was approved by the ethics committee of the institutions in which the research was conducted. Results The mean of the Southwick angles obtained by the conventional method was of 8.7º (±2.0º), and, by the digital method, it was of 9.9º (±1.8º). The angle obtained by the two methods was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The majority of the studied population (95%) had a body mass index (BMI) > 18.5, and the mean of the angles was within the previously established value (∼ 10º). Conclusion For the first time, using a substantial sample size, a normal value for the Southwick angle measured in asymptomatic individuals was demonstrated. In addition, the image editor proved to be a reliable method to measuring the Southwick angle.
