Abstract The discussions that took place in the American Archivist and Archivaria between 1982 and 1999, are hereby analyzed and reflect the struggles of the Archival Science for finding its identity as an autonomous science. It is possible to establish here three epistemological shifts. The first one points to the theory as an obstacle, criticizing the uselessness of scientific generalizations, and its search reveals more a need for social recognition of the profession. The second one refers to the theory as a foundation of scientificity which recognizes essential properties as linked to the nature of its object of study and the need to study and protect these. The last of them approaches the theory as transgression, that is, as a transformation tool that must produce indispensable changes in the development of the field and consider this a way to release the restrictions imposed by tradition.

Resumen Se analizan las discusiones que tuvieron lugar en las revistas American Archivist y Archivaria entre 1982 y 1999 que reflejan las luchas de la Archivística por su identidad como ciencia autónoma. Es posible identificar tres movimientos epistemológicos. El primero apunta la teoría como obstáculo, critica la ineficacia de las generalizaciones científicas, su búsqueda revela más una necesidad del reconocimiento social de la profesión. El segundo se refiere a la teoría como fundamento de cientificidad, que reconoce propiedades esenciales ligadas a la naturaleza de su objeto de estudio y la necesidad de estudiarlas y protegerlas. El último aborda la teoría como transgresión, es decir, como una herramienta de transformación que debe producir cambios indispensables en el desarrollo del campo y considerarla como una forma de liberar las restricciones impuestas por la tradición.

RESUMO Este artigo tem por finalidade resgatar ações empreendidas na gestão Luís Henrique Dias Tavares na Direção do Arquivo Público do Estado da Bahia (APEB), no período de 1959 a 1969. Para tanto se realizou pesquisa documental em fontes produzidas e acumuladas nos 10 anos de gestão, as quais integram o fundo APEB. A leitura e análise das fontes revelam que Luís Henrique pode ser considerado como o gestor pioneiro da governança arquivística na Bahia. Ressalta-se um conjunto de iniciativas por ele empreendidas, entre elas a propositura do projeto de reestruturação legal da instituição; a criação e implantação do Curso de Arquivo, do Conselho de Assistência Técnica aos Arquivos e da Biblioteca Francisco Vicente Vianna, assim como a elaboração e publicação do Guia do APEB. Uma experiência substantiva que poderia ter contribuído para o processo de valorização e modernização da instituição.

ABSTRACT This article aims to rescue the actions undertaken during the administration of Luís Henrique Dias Tavares as director of the Arquivo Público do Estado da Bahia (State Archives of Bahia, APEB), between 1959 and 1969. For this purpose, documentary research was carried out on sources produced and accumulated in the ten years of his administration, kept in the “Fundo APEB”. The analysis of the sources reveals that Luís Henrique can be considered as the pioneer manager of archival governance in Bahia. The main initiatives undertaken are: proposition of a legal restructuring of the institution; creation and implementation of the Archives Course, the Technical Assistance Archives Council and the Francisco Vicente Vianna Library, and preparation and publication of the APEB Guide. A substantive experience that could have contributed to the process of valuing and modernizing of the institution.

Estudo exploratório, com base em pesquisa documental complementada por consulta bibliográfica, objetivando resgatar a evolução histórico-institucional do Arquivo Histórico Municipal de Salvador (AHMS) e caracterizar a presente estrutura organizacional e seu acervo documental. Destaca as fontes de interesse para a história e a cultura da saúde, custodiadas pelo AHMS.

Based on documental investigation, supplemented by bibliographic research, this exploratory study recaptures the historical and institutional evolution of Salvador's Municipal History Archives and describes its current organizational structure and documental collection. Special attention is placed on sources of interest to the history and culture of health.
