Abstract Background International studies performed during the periods of social isolation highlighted the potential loss of student's learning skills. The present study fills a gap in Brazilian research on this topic and focuses on the development of reading fluency. Objective To investigate the development of the reading fluency of students in the early years of elementary school during e-learning as a result of the social distancing measures put into effect due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods Students from grades 2 to 5 were recorded. The number of words read per minute and of those read correctly per minute were analyzed. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed, using analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures with Bonferroni correction in the longitudinal study, and the t-test in the cross-sectional study. Results In the cross-sectional study, 162 students participated. Only the comparison between the 2nd grade classes of 2020 and 2021 showed a statistically significant difference. In the prepandemic classes, the students had better results in reading accuracy than the students assessed during the pandemic. The longitudinal study included 75 students, who improved in fluency rate and accuracy as expected between March and December 2020. In March 2021, the results showed a drop, which may be related to school closures during the Brazilian summer vacation. Conclusions The present research demonstrates the results of Brazilian students in terms of the development of reading fluency during the pandemic. There was an expressive development in grades 2 and 3, with stability in the following grades. The 2nd grade class of 2021 suffered a major impact due to the pandemic.

Resumo Antecedentes Estudos internacionais realizados durante os períodos de isolamento social destacaram a potencial perda das habilidades de aprendizagem dos alunos. O presente estudo preenche uma lacuna nas pesquisas brasileiras sobre este tema, e se centra no desenvolvimento da fluência de leitura. Objetivo Investigar o desenvolvimento da fluência de leitura de alunos nos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental durante as aulas remotas ministradas em decorrência das medidas de distanciamento social postas em prática por conta da pandemia de doença do coronavírus 2019 (coronavirus disease 2019, COVID-19, em inglês). Métodos Estudantes do 2o ao 5o anos foram gravados. Foram analisadoso número de palavras lidas por minuto e o de palavras lidas corretamente por minuto. Realizou-se análise estatística descritiva por meio de análise de variância (analysis of variance, ANOVA, em inglês) para medidas repetidas com correção de Bonferroni no estudo longitudinal, e teste T no estudo transversal. Resultados Ao todo, 162 estudantes participaram do estudo transversal. Apenas a comparação entre as turmas de 2o ano de 2020 e 2021 apresentou diferença estatisticamente significativa. Nas aulas pré-pandemia, as turmas apresentaram resultados melhores em termos de precisão de leitura do que as turmas avaliadas durante a pandemia. O estudo longitudinal incluiu 75 alunos; entre março e dezembro de 2020, eles melhoraram sua taxa de fluência e acurácia, conforme esperado. Em março de 2021, os resultados mostraram uma queda, o que pode estar relacionado ao fechamento das escolas durante as férias. Conclusões Esta pesquisa demonstra os resultados do desenvolvimento da leitura de uma amostra de estudantes brasileiros durante a pandemia. Houve uma evolução expressiva no 2° e 3° anos, com estabilidade nos anos seguintes. A turma de 2° ano de 2021 sofreu um grande impacto devido à pandemia.

ABSTRACT Purpose To characterize phonological processing of adolescents and to identify language skills and cognitive functions that influence their age group. Methods 83 typical adolescents aged from 11 to 16 years of age participated in the research. Phonological awareness tests, rapid automatic naming, neuropsychological assessment and reading were used. Descriptive analysis and linear regression were carried out with a 5% significance level. Results Regarding phonological processing, a lower performance was found in the phonemic segmentation task, longer times for object naming and performance as were expected for working memory of the age range. There was a reciprocal association between rapid naming of objects, letters and working memory, between rapid naming of letters and phonological awareness. Executive functions and attention influence working memory and phonological awareness. Semantic episodic verbal memory influenced working memory and reading, phonological awareness. Conclusion The performance in phonological processing was influenced by linguistic and cognitive skills which suggests they are still improving in adolescents.

RESUMO Objetivo Caracterizar o processamento fonológico em adolescentes e identificar habilidades linguísticas e funções cognitivas que o influenciam nessa faixa etária. Método Participaram 83 adolescentes típicos de 11 a 16 anos. Utilizaram-se os testes de consciência fonológica, nomeação automática rápida, avaliação neuropsicológica e leitura. Foi realizada a análise descritiva e a regressão linear com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados Em relação ao processamento fonológico, observou-se menor desempenho na tarefa de segmentação fonêmica, maior tempo de nomeação de objetos e desempenho dentro do esperado para a idade em memória operacional. Verificou-se associação recíproca entre nomeação rápida de objetos, de letras e memória operacional, entre nomeação rápida de letras e consciência fonológica. As funções executivas e a atenção influenciaram a memória operacional e a consciência fonológica. A memória verbal episódica semântica influenciou a memória operacional e, a leitura, a consciência fonológica. Conclusão O desempenho no processamento fonológico foi influenciado por habilidades linguísticas e cognitivas e sugere ainda estar em aprimoramento na adolescência.

ABSTRACT Purpose to characterize the performance in oral narrative discourse of adolescents from 6 to 9 years of age from an elementary school, as well as to verify the influence of gender, school year, age, performance in oral language tests, memory, and appointment of figures. Methods 100 adolescents of both genders from the sixth to the ninth years of elementary school who did not have any language or learning disorders were evaluated for oral narrative discourse (MAC Battery), visual figure nomination (Boston Naming Test), oral language and memory (NEUPSILIN). Performance was considered as a response variable in narrative discourse (partial and complete retelling and the ability to answer questions). After univariate analysis, Multiple Linear Regression models were constructed. Results Only general performance in the naming task was considered as a predictor of performance in oral narrative discourse. A direct association between the variables of narrative discourse and the naming of figures was present. We show the characteristics of adolescents' performance in the partial and complete retelling and in the answers to the questions by age, school year and sex. Conclusion in the studied sample the participants (aged from two to seven years old) were able to understand and detail an oral narrative discourse similar to adults with a low educational level, consequently the MAC Battery narrative discourse test can be used to assess adolescents without any requirements for adaptation.

RESUMO Objetivo caracterizar o desempenho de adolescentes de 11 a 16 anos de idade, do 6º ao 9º ano do ensino fundamental no discurso narrativo oral, bem como verificar a influência do sexo, ano escolar, idade, desempenho em testes de linguagem oral, memória e nomeação de figuras. Método 100 adolescentes de ambos os sexos, cursando do sexto ao nono ano do ensino fundamental, sem queixa de distúrbio de linguagem e aprendizagem foram submetidos à avaliação do discurso narrativo oral (Bateria MAC), nomeação de figuras por confrontação visual (Teste de Nomeação de Boston), provas de linguagem oral e memória (NEUPSILIN). Considerou-se como variável resposta o desempenho no discurso narrativo (reconto parcial e integral e resposta a questões fechadas). Após análises univariadas, foram construídos modelos de Regressão Linear Múltipla. Resultados Apenas o desempenho geral na tarefa de nomeação foi considerado preditor do desempenho no discurso narrativo oral. Verificou-se associação diretamente proporcional entre as variáveis do discurso narrativo e da nomeação de figuras. A caracterização do desempenho dos adolescentes no reconto parcial e integral e na resposta às questões fechadas por idade, ano escolar e sexo será apresentada. Conclusão Na amostra estudada, os indivíduos foram capazes de compreender e de elaborar um discurso narrativo oral de forma semelhante a adultos com menor nível de escolaridade (de dois a sete anos). Dessa forma, a prova de discurso narrativo da Bateria MAC pode ser utilizada para a avaliação de adolescentes sem adaptações.

ABSTRACT Purpose To ascertain the performance of adolescent’s phonemic awareness and corroborate the association between this skill and reading. Methods Eighty-three adolescents participated in the study consisting of 58 girls and 25 boys aged between 11 and 16 years of age all being enrolled in the 6th to 9th grades of secondary elementary school in two public schools in Belo Horizonte. Phonemic awareness tests and word and pseudoword reading test were carried out. Results Adolescents had difficulty in performing the phonemic segmentation task, on the other hand when performing the CVC subtraction and inversion tasks there was a ceiling effect. A positive correlation was found between the phonemic awareness tasks and the reading of words and pseudowords. Conclusion This study concluded that the development of phonological awareness is still necessary in adolescence, i.e. the development of this skill contributes significantly to good reading performance at secondary elementary school level.

RESUMO Objetivo caracterizar o desempenho de adolescentes em consciência fonêmica e verificar a associação entre essa habilidade e a leitura de palavras. Métodos participaram do estudo 83 adolescentes, sendo 58 do gênero feminino e 25 do gênero masculino, com idades entre 11 e 16 anos, matriculados do 6º ao 9º ano do ensino fundamental II de duas escolas públicas de Belo Horizonte. Foram aplicados testes de consciência fonêmica e a prova de leitura de palavras e pseudopalavras. Resultados os adolescentes apresentaram maior dificuldade em realizar a tarefa de segmentação fonêmica. Em contrapartida, na execução das tarefas de subtração de consoante/vogal/consoante e inversão, houve efeito teto. Observou-se correlação positiva entre as tarefas da consciência fonêmica e a leitura de palavras e pseudopalavras. Conclusão O desenvolvimento da consciência fonológica ainda é necessário na adolescência e, além disso, se pode dizer que o desenvolvimento dessa habilidade contribui de forma significativa para o bom desempenho da leitura no ensino fundamental II

ABSTRACT Introduction: reading fluency is a measure capable of objectively evaluating the performance of students in oral reading. Objective: to evaluate the use of reading fluency as an indicator of reading competence to be used in inclusive education. Methods: 121 students from the 3rd to the 5th year of elementary school participated in the study. 31 of these students from the target group of special education were in the interest group and 90 students were in the control group. A Z score was defined to allow for the individual analysis of the students’ performance and the identification of possible deficits in the tasks of fluency in reading and comprehension. The Student’s t-test was carried out to compare the groups. Results: There was variability in the performances presented by each subgroup of the target group of special education. When comparing the two groups, the results were superior for the CG in all variables. Conclusion: The diversity found within the subgroups of the target audience of special education showed that the assessment of individual reading fluency is essential for both research and pedagogical practice.

RESUMO Introdução: a fluência de leitura é uma medida capaz de avaliar de forma objetiva o desempenho de escolares em leitura oral. Objetivo: avaliar a utilização da fluência de leitura como um indicador de competência leitora a ser utilizado na educação inclusiva. Métodos: participaram do estudo 121 escolares do 3° ao 5° ano do ensino fundamental, destes 31 escolares do público-alvo da educação especial compuseram o grupo de interesse e 90 escolares compuseram o grupo controle. Foi definido um escore Z que permitiu a realização da análise individual do desempenho dos escolares e a identificação dos possíveis déficits nas tarefas de fluência de leitura e compreensão, foi aplicado o Test t de Student para comparação dos grupos. Resultados: houve variabilidade nos desempenhos apresentados por cada subgrupo do público-alvo da educação especial. Na comparação dos dois grupos, os resultados foram superiores para o GC em todas as variáveis. Conclusão: A diversidade encontrada dentro dos subgrupos do público-alvo da educação especial mostrou que a avaliação de fluência de leitura individual é essencial tanto para pesquisas quanto para a prática pedagógica.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the influence of schooling on reading speed measures in Elementary School and Junior High, also aims to explore the levels of accuracy of the variables of reading speed in the epidemiological investigation stages of cases. Methods 535 students from the 2nd to the 9th grade from a private school and a state school system participated in the study. The oral reading of a simple text was evaluated in the following parameters: words read per minute and correctly words read per minute. Descriptive statistics and T-test measures with the significance of 5% were conducted, besides the z-score, standardized and individual. Results The results corroborate the literature review which shows an increase in reading speed with the progression of schooling. The reading fluency was presented in the construction process between the 2nd and 7th grades, with stabilization from the 7th year. A more fluent and homogeneous reading was sedimented between the 7th and 9th grades. The study proposes the interpretation of the findings with scales suggestive of the deficit using the z-score. The data are stratified from values suggestive of significant deficit to non-suggestive, with a total of five strata. The stratification allows a clearer reference on which point the scholar found in the expected ranges for their schooling. Conclusion The measures of the expected values according to schooling are essential for better-quality knowledge of reading development, to provide reference standards for adequate monitoring in the clinical and educational sphere and prediction of reading skills and difficulties.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a influência da escolaridade em medidas de velocidade de leitura no ensino fundamental e explorar os níveis de precisão das variáveis da velocidade de leitura nos estágios de investigação epidemiológica de casos. Método Participaram 535 escolares do 2º ao 9º ano de escola particular e pública. A leitura oral de um texto simples foi avaliada nos parâmetros palavras lidas por minuto e palavras lidas corretamente por minuto. Foram conduzidas medidas de estatística descritiva e teste T de student com significância de 5%, além do escore Z, padronizado e individual. Resultados Os resultados corroboram a literatura que evidencia aumento da velocidade de leitura com a progressão da escolaridade. A fluência leitora se mostrou em processo de construção entre o 2º e o 7º ano do Ensino Fundamental, com estabilização a partir do 7º ano. Uma leitura mais fluente e homogênea se mostrou sedimentada entre o 7º e o 9º ano. O estudo propõe a interpretação dos achados com escalas sugestivas para déficit por meio do z-escore. Os dados são estratificados desde valores sugestivos de déficit importante até o não sugestivo, com um total de cinco estratos. A estratificação permite uma referência mais clara sobre qual ponto se encontra o escolar nas faixas esperadas para sua escolaridade. Conclusão As medidas dos valores esperados segundo a escolaridade são essenciais para melhor conhecimento do desenvolvimento da leitura, de forma a prover padrões de referência para um adequado monitoramento no âmbito clínico e educacional e predição das habilidades e dificuldades leitoras.

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the consistency of responses of evaluators and to verify the usability of the perception and analysis of SOLAR (Science of Language and Reading) Methods: a non-experimental descriptive cross-sectional study. Elementary school teachers and undergraduate students of speech therapy and pedagogy participated as the judges. The judges used the SOLAR Scale as an instrument to analyze the reading fluency of twenty audios recorded by elementary school students. Usability comparisons were performed using the Kruskal Wallis test and two-by-two comparisons using the Mann Whitney test. To analyze the consistency of the responses between the judges, the calculation of the interclass correlation coefficient was used. Results: the analysis of the reliability of the answers showed an excellent intraclass correlation coefficient for all the skills of the Scale. As for the usability of the Scale, more than 80% of the participants positively evaluated the assessment. This was verified through the usability questionnaires which confirmed that it was easy to use, with clear guidelines and that users felt comfortable and confident using it. Conclusion: SOLAR obtained good results in reliability and consistency with excellent agreement between the evaluators. These results indicated satisfactory reliability of the SOLAR items and favorable qualitative ratings from users.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar a consistência de respostas entre avaliadores e verificar a usabilidade da Escala de Percepção e Análise da Fluência Leitora - SOLAR. Métodos: estudo descritivo não experimental de corte transversal. Participaram como juízes professores do Ensino Fundamental e acadêmicos de Fonoaudiologia e Pedagogia. Os juízes utilizaram como instrumento a Escala SOLAR para a análise de fluência leitora de áudios de 20 estudantes do Ensino Fundamental. A comparação da usabilidade foi realizada por meio do teste Kruskal Wallis e comparação dois a dois pelo teste Mann Whitney. Para análise da consistência de respostas entre juízes foi utilizado o cálculo do coeficiente de correlação interclasse. O nível de significância utilizado foi de 5%. Resultados: a análise da fidedignidade das respostas demonstrou coeficiente de correlação intraclasse excelente para todas as habilidades da escala. Quanto à usabilidade do instrumento, mais de 80% dos participantes o avaliaram positivamente. Verificou-se, por meio dos questionários de usabilidade, que é uma escala de fácil uso, com orientações claras, os seus usuários se sentem confortáveis e confiantes em utilizá-la. Conclusão: a SOLAR obteve bons indicadores de fidedignidade e consistência, com excelente concordância entre os avaliadores. Tais resultados indicam confiabilidade satisfatória dos itens e avaliações qualitativas favoráveis dos usuários.

Abstract Aim: to investigate through a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) the effects of interactive media on the cognitive, language, and motor development of children and adolescents. Methods: Searches were performed with the Medline, AMED, Embase, PEDro, Cochrane, Psychinfo, and ERIC databases in May 2017 with updated in July 2020. For the search strategy, we used descriptors related to “randomized controlled trial”, “interactive media” and “children and adolescents up to 18 years old”. RCTs that investigated the effectiveness of interactive media in cognitive, motor, and language development of children and adolescents up to 18 years of age with typical development were included. When appropriate, meta-analyses were conducted using a random-effects model. Pooled data were presented using standardized mean difference and 95% confidence interval. We assessed the quality of evidence using the GRADE methodology and the methodological quality using the PEDro scale. Results: of the trials found, 14 references were eligible for this study. The GRADE methodology was used in 13 RCTs. Estimates showed a low level of evidence of a small effect of media use on cognitive development compared to that in the control group and another intervention. No effect on motor and language development. Conclusion: The results of this systematic review do not support claims about the advantages or disadvantages of interactive media in child development. High-quality evidence was found that interactive media is not superior to other interventions for cognitive and language development outcomes and quality of moderate evidence for motor and language development.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe the occurrence of self-correction among adolescents in the rapid automatic naming test and the influence of schooling, type of visual stimulation and cognitive and language skills. Methods: 83 typical adolescents from 11 to 16 years old, enrolled from 6th to 9th grade of two public schools in Belo Horizonte participated in the study. The following tests were applied: rapid automatic naming, NEUPSILIN Brief Neuropsychological Assessment Instrument and Boston Naming. During rapid naming, substitutions and self-correction were accounted for. The variation in the number of errors, with and without self-correction, was related to schooling, functions and skills evaluated. Appropriate statistical tests were applied, adopting a significance level lower than 0.05. Results: individuals who made no mistakes had a better performance in attention, executive functions, memory, and vocabulary than those who made. Adolescents who performed self-correction were better at attention than those who did not correct themselves. Non-alphanumeric stimuli presented a higher occurrence of self-correction. Non-alphanumeric and alphanumeric tasks differed in terms of number of errors, both with and without self-correction. Adolescents from the early and late years of middle school differed regarding self-correction in the task of naming letters. Conclusion: self-correction was frequent in the evaluated sample and differentiated the group of adolescents who self-corrected or not, regarding attention, executive functions and vocabulary.

RESUMO Objetivos: descrever a ocorrência da autocorreção entre adolescentes no teste de nomeação automática rápida e a influência da escolaridade, tipo de estímulo visual e de habilidades cognitivas e linguísticas. Métodos: participaram 83 adolescentes típicos de 11 a 16 anos, matriculados do 6º ao 9º ano do ensino fundamental de duas escolas públicas de Belo Horizonte. Foram aplicados os testes: nomeação automática rápida, NEUPSILIN Instrumento de Avaliação Neuropsicológica Breve e Nomeação de Boston. Durante a nomeação rápida foram contabilizadas as substituições e a autocorreção. A variação do número de erros, com e sem autocorreção, foi relacionada à escolaridade, funções e habilidades avaliadas. Foi realizada análise estatística pertinente adotando-se o nível de significância menor que 0,05. Resultados: os indivíduos que não cometeram erros apresentaram melhor desempenho na atenção, funções executivas, memória e vocabulário do que os indivíduos que cometeram erros. Os adolescentes que realizaram autocorreções foram melhores em atenção do que aqueles que não realizaram a autocorreção. Os estímulos não alfanuméricos apresentaram maior ocorrência de autocorreção. As tarefas não alfanuméricas e alfanuméricas se diferenciaram em termos de variação do número de erros com e sem autocorreção. Os adolescentes dos anos iniciais e finais do ensino fundamental II se diferenciaram na tarefa de nomeação de letras quanto à ocorrência de autocorreção. Conclusão: a autocorreção se mostrou frequente na amostra avaliada e diferenciou o grupo de adolescentes, que realizam ou não a autocorreção, com relação à atenção, funções executivas e vocabulário.

ABSTRACT Purpose The study presents the process of developing of an instrument for collective evaluation of reading fluency and comprehension of secondary elementary school students in grades 6-9 and verifies the effect of schooling on performance in the instrument. Methods 100 students regularly enrolled in grades 6-9 in secondary elementary public schools participated in the study. The construction of the instrument involved seven steps, with the participation of two judges. The instrument was composed of narrative text appropriate for secondary elementary school students and for 10 multiple choice questions, which five were literal questions and five were inferential questions. Results The results showed a better performance for the participants with higher schooling in fluency and in reading comprehension. The reading fluency presented positive and moderate correlations with the reading comprehension. Conclusion The instrument is easy to apply and analyze, and can be used in clinical, educational and research context to measure the performance of students in grades 6-9 in fluency and reading comprehension.

RESUMO Objetivo O estudo apresenta o processo de desenvolvimento de um instrumento para avaliação coletiva da fluência e da compreensão de leitura de escolares do ensino fundamental II e verifica o efeito da escolaridade no desempenho no instrumento. Método Participaram do estudo 100 escolares regularmente matriculados do 6º ao 9º ano no ensino fundamental de escolas públicas. A construção do instrumento envolveu sete etapas, com participação de duas juízas. O instrumento é composto por um texto narrativo apropriado para escolares do ensino fundamental II e por 10 questões de múltipla escolha, sendo cinco questões literais e cinco inferenciais. Resultados Os resultados evidenciaram melhor desempenho, tanto em fluência quanto em compreensão de leitura, para os participantes com maior escolaridade. A fluência de leitura apresentou correlações positivas e moderadas com a compreensão leitora. Conclusão O instrumento é de fácil aplicação e análise, podendo ser utilizado em contexto clínico, educacional e de pesquisa para mensurar o desempenho de escolares do 6º ao 9º ano em fluência e compreensão de leitura.

ABSTRACT Purpose this study aimed to perform a systematic review of national and international studies about the relationship between morphological awareness, reading/writing, reading comprehension, and spelling. Research strategies a search for national and international literature was carried out using databases Medline (via PubMed) and Portal de Periódicos da Capes (Eric, PsycINFO, LILACS, SciELO) from August to September 2015. Selection criteria the inclusion criteria were: studies that answered the guiding question and addressed the subject matter established by the descriptors and keywords. Studies with animals, laboratories, opinion/expert pieces, case series, case reports and review studies were excluded. Data analysis the following markers were considered: type and objective of the study, the skills related to morphological awareness (reading, writing, reading comprehension and spelling), tests performed, and their main results. Results the search carried out in the pre-established databases with descriptors and free terms resulted in 203 articles. The search in PubMed resulted in 81 studies, and in Portal de Periódicos Capes, 122. Of the total, 154 were excluded according to the title and abstract, whereas 39 were excluded upon reading the full text. This allowed for the analysis of 10 articles. Conclusion children with better scores in the morphological awareness test show better results in reading and writing across all school grades.

RESUMO Objetivo Realizar uma revisão sistemática de estudos nacionais e internacionais sobre a relação entre consciência morfológica e leitura e escrita de escolares. Estratégia de pesquisa Foi realizado um levantamento na literatura nacional e internacional utilizando as bases de dados Medline (via PubMed) e Portal de Periódicos da Capes (Eric, PsycINFO, LILACS, SciELO) no período de agosto a setembro de 2015. Critérios de seleção Os critérios de inclusão utilizados foram: artigos que respondiam à pergunta norteadora e que atendiam à temática estabelecida pelos descritores e palavras-chave. Excluíram-se os estudos com animais, laboratoriais, artigos de opinião/autoridade, série de caso, relato de caso e estudos de revisão. Análise dos dados Foram considerados os seguintes marcadores: tipo de estudo, objetivo do estudo e habilidade relacionada à consciência morfológica (leitura, escrita), os testes realizados e principais resultados. Resultados A partir da busca por meio de descritores e termos livres foram encontrados 203 artigos nas bases de dados pré-estabelecidas. Na Pubmed, a pesquisa resultou em 81 estudos e 122 no Portal de Periódicos da Capes. Do total, 154 foram excluídos pelo título e resumo e 39, pela leitura do texto completo. Isso possibilitou a análise de 10 artigos. Conclusão Crianças com melhor desempenho em testes de consciência morfológica apresentam melhores resultados em provas de leitura e escrita, para todas as séries.

ABSTRACT Purpose Verify the knowledge of teachers from public and private schools about stuttering and attest the effectiveness of the Teacher Training Program on Stuttering in the expansion of this knowledge. Methods The study sample comprised 137 early-childhood teachers. Initially, the teachers responded to a questionnaire on stuttering. After that, 75 teachers attended a 4-hour Teacher Training Program on Stuttering. One month later, the teachers responded to the same questionnaire again. Results The following points were observed after the training program: increased percentage of teachers who consider as low the prevalence of stuttering in the population; beginning of reports stating that stuttering is more frequent in males; increased number of teachers who consider stuttering hereditary; decreased incidence of teachers who believe stuttering is psychological; prevalence of those who believe stuttering is a consequence of multiple causes; decreased rate of teachers who believe stuttering is emotional; a better understanding of how educators should behave to help stutterers. Conclusion Before the course, the teachers had some knowledge regarding stuttering, but it was insufficient to differentiate from other language disorders. The Program expanded their knowledge on stuttering. However, it proved to be more effective with respect to the characteristics of stuttering than to the attitudes of the teachers.

RESUMO Objetivo verificar o que docentes de escolas públicas e privadas sabem sobre gagueira, bem como verificar a eficácia do Programa de Formação Docente em Gagueira na ampliação desses conhecimentos. Métodos participaram do estudo 137 docentes da educação infantil. Inicialmente os docentes responderam a um questionário sobre gagueira. Em seguida, 75 docentes participaram do Programa de Formação Docente em Gagueira com duração de quatro horas. Um mês após participação no programa, os docentes responderam novamente ao questionário. Resultados depois da formação, notou-se um aumento no percentual daqueles que consideram baixa a prevalência de pessoas que gaguejam na população. Os entrevistados passaram a relatar que a gagueira é mais frequente no gênero masculino. Houve aumento daqueles que consideram a gagueira hereditária. Diminuiu a incidência de educadores que acreditavam que a gagueira é psicológica. A maioria dos entrevistados passou a acreditar na multicausalidade da gagueira. Diminuiu o índice de educadores que afirmavam que a gagueira é emocional. Houve melhor entendimento de algumas atitudes que os educadores podem ter na tentativa de ajudar uma pessoa que gagueja. Conclusão os educadores possuíam algum conhecimento sobre gagueira, mas insuficiente para diferenciá-la dos demais distúrbios de linguagem. O programa ampliou os conhecimentos em relação à gagueira. Entretanto, mostrou-se mais efetivo para as características da gagueira do que para as atitudes dos educadores.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To describe the performance of fluent adults in different measures of speech rate. Methods: The study included 24 fluent adults, of both genders, speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, who were born and still living in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, state of Minas Gerais, aged between 18 and 59 years. Participants were grouped by age: G1 (18-29 years), G2 (30-39 years), G3 (40-49 years), and G4 (50-59 years). The speech samples were obtained following the methodology of the Speech Fluency Assessment Protocol. In addition to the measures of speech rate proposed by the protocol (speech rate in words and syllables per minute), the rate of speech into phonemes per second and the articulation rate with and without the disfluencies were calculated. We used the nonparametric Friedman test and the Wilcoxon test for multiple comparisons. Groups were compared using the nonparametric Kruskal Wallis. The significance level was of 5%. Results: There were significant differences between measures of speech rate involving syllables. The multiple comparisons showed that all the three measures were different. There was no effect of age for the studied measures. These findings corroborate previous studies. Conclusion: The inclusion of temporal acoustic measures such as speech rate in phonemes per second and articulation rates with and without disfluencies can be a complementary approach in the evaluation of speech rate.

RESUMO Objetivo: Descrever o desempenho de adultos fluentes em diferentes medidas de velocidade de fala. Métodos: Participaram do estudo 24 adultos fluentes, de ambos os gêneros, falantes da variante mineira do Português Brasileiro, nascidos e residentes na região metropolitana de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, com faixa etária entre 18 e 59 anos de idade. Os participantes foram agrupados por faixa etária em: G1 (18 a 29 anos), G2 (30 a 39 anos), G3 (40 a 49 anos) e G4 (50 a 59 anos). A coleta da amostra de fala seguiu a metodologia do Protocolo para Avaliação da Fluência da Fala. Além das medidas de velocidade de fala propostas pelo protocolo (taxa de elocução em palavras e sílabas por minuto), foram calculadas: taxa de elocução em fones por segundo e taxa de articulação com e sem as disfluências. Utilizou-se o teste não paramétrico de Friedman e o teste de Wilcoxon para as múltiplas comparações. Os grupos foram comparados por meio do teste não paramétrico de Kruskall Wallis. O nível de significância adotado foi de 5%. Resultados: Verificou-se diferença significativa entre as medidas de velocidade de fala que envolvem sílabas e as múltiplas comparações apontaram que as três medidas são diferentes entre si. Não houve efeito da idade para as medidas estudadas. Esses achados corroboram estudos anteriores. Conclusão: A inclusão de medidas temporais acústicas, como a taxa de elocução em fones por segundo e taxas de articulação com e sem disfluências, podem ser uma metodologia complementar na avaliação da velocidade de fala.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the self-perception of reading and writing difficulties of elementary school students from region of high social risk and elevated health vulnerability index, as well as the perception of their parents about these difficulties. Methods sixty-five students (from both genders), from the 4th to the 7th years of elementary school, and those responsible for them participated in the survey. Two questionnaires, one for students and another for the ones responsible for them, were used, with questions about reading and writing difficulties. It was used the School Performance Test (Teste de Desempenho Escolar - TDE, with reading and writing tests). Results Of the students assessed, 2/3 had a positive self-perception of their performance in reading and writing and their parents appeared to realize the difficulties more sharply than their children. There was relationship between student self-perception and lower performance in reading and writing tests, which was also verified in relation to the perception of the parents. Conclusion Less students presented negative self-perception of their performance in reading and writing when it is compared to the perception of the parents. Those children with better performance perceive themselves better and so do their parents. However, reading and writing tests revealed a higher percentage of students with lower performances than the self-perception indicated. In this sense, especially in areas of high social risk as in this study, educators and professionals involved in the teaching-learning process should be alert to signs of difficulties, even before complaints from the family and from the children.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a autopercepção das dificuldades de leitura e escrita de estudantes do ensino fundamental de uma região de alto risco social e elevado índice de vulnerabilidade à saúde, bem como a percepção de seus pais sobre essas dificuldades. Métodos Participaram 65 alunos (ambos os gêneros), do 4º ao ٧º ano do ensino fundamental de uma escola municipal e seus responsáveis. Foram utilizados dois questionários, um para os estudantes e outro para seus responsáveis, com perguntas sobre dificuldades na leitura e na escrita. Utilizou-se também o Teste de Desempenho Escolar (TDE) (provas de leitura e escrita). Resultados Dos estudantes avaliados, 2/3 apresentaram autopercepção positiva do seu desempenho em leitura e escrita e seus pais aparentaram perceber as dificuldades de forma mais acentuada do que seus filhos. Observou-se relação entre autopercepção do estudante e desempenho inferior nos testes de leitura e escrita, o que também foi verificado em relação à percepção dos pais. Conclusão Menos estudantes apresentaram autopercepção negativa do seu desempenho em leitura e escrita, quando comparado à percepção dos pais. Aquelas crianças com melhor desempenho percebem-se melhor e seus pais também. No entanto, os testes de leitura e escrita revelaram um percentual maior de estudantes com desempenho inferior do que a autopercepção indicou. Neste sentido, especialmente em regiões de alto risco social, como a deste estudo, os educadores e profissionais envolvidos no processo de ensino-aprendizagem devem estar atentos aos sinais de dificuldades, antes mesmo das queixas familiares e da criança.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To investigate the association between word reading performance and the resources of the family environment of third-year elementary school children enrolled in a Belo Horizonte municipal school. Methods: This study involved a nonprobability sample comprising schoolchildren of both sexes aged between 9 and 11 years enrolled in a municipal school of Belo Horizonte. The status of the children's home environment resources was assessed using the inventory of the Home Environment Resources and their reading performance was measured through the Evaluation Tests of Reading Processes. Results: We found statistical significance in the relationship between the availability of material resources (ludic and linguistic) and social activities and the reading of words. Parental practices were positively correlated to the reading of infrequent words. Only the rubric “routines” was not significantly associated with the students’ reading performance. Conclusion: It was observed a proportional association between the resources of the family environment and the reading and writing performance of the schoolchildren. These results demonstrate the need for actions to be developed with the families to assist them in coping with the adverse conditions and optimizing the home resources to enhance the children's development.

RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar a associação do desempenho em leitura de palavras aos recursos do ambiente familiar de escolares do terceiro ano do primeiro ciclo de uma escola da rede pública municipal de ensino de Belo Horizonte. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo com amostra não probabilística composta por escolares de ambos os sexos, com idades entre 9 e 11 anos, estudantes de uma escola da rede pública municipal de ensino de Belo Horizonte. Foram analisadas as configurações dos recursos do ambiente familiar de 41 escolares, por meio do Inventário de Recursos do Ambiente Familiar e seu desempenho em leitura, avaliado pelas Provas de Avaliação dos Processos de Leitura. Resultados: Foi encontrada significância estatística nas relações entre a disponibilidade de recursos materiais (lúdicos e linguísticos) e atividades sociais e a leitura de palavras. As práticas parentais se relacionaram positivamente à leitura de palavras não frequentes. Apenas o item “rotinas” não se associou significativamente ao desempenho de leitura dos escolares. Conclusão: Constatou-se associação proporcional dos recursos do ambiente familiar ao desempenho em leitura e escrita de escolares, evidenciando a necessidade de trabalhos junto às famílias no enfrentamento das adversidades e potencialização dos recursos familiares para o desenvolvimento infantil.
