ORIENTATION: Today, industries and academic institutions across different continents, including those in South Africa, compete for the same talent, which presents the most valuable asset of an organisation. The surge in talent rivalry means that employers need to adopt strategies to distinguish themselves from their rivals. RESEARCH PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop a conceptual model to better understand how talent management (TM) creates value for higher education institutions. MOTIVATION FOR THE STUDY: Talent management research is primarily built around an exclusive approach to TM, yet how it works in practice and is implemented, conceived and developed in higher education, remains unclear. Hence, this study is needed to understand how integrated TM fosters competitive advantage in higher education institutions. RESEARCH APPROACH/DESIGN AND METHOD: A quantitative research method was, by means of a questionnaire. Primary data were collected from 265 academics across three universities in South Africa. The data were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and Analysis of Moment Structures. MAIN FINDINGS: The results revealed that integrated TM practices (i.e. talent attraction, development and retention) positively contributed to sustainable competitive advantage of higher education institutions. PRACTICAL/MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS: The study provides a better understanding of the role of integrated TM in improving competitive advantage. Also, the study will help shape the policy-making process on TM in higher education institutions. CONTRIBUTION/VALUE-ADD: This study adds value to TM literature by designing a conceptual model for higher education institutions to achieve sustainable competitive advantage.

ORIENTATION: Although talent is a strategic asset for achieving organisational success, most higher education institutions (HEIs) struggle to attract talented academics required to compete RESEARCH PURPOSE: The primary purpose of this study was to examine talent attraction practices that create a competitive advantage for South African HEIs MOTIVATION FOR THE STUDY: The study was necessary to enhance the competitiveness of HEIs through talent attraction practices such as recruitment and selection, job analysis and employer branding RESEARCH APPROACH/DESIGN AND METHOD: The concurrent mixed-methods approach was used to analyse the quantitative and qualitative data independently. A sample size of 347 was selected from three South African HEIs. However, the data were collected from only 277 respondents using questionnaires (265) and interviews (12). The quantitative data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (version 27.0) and Analysis of Moment Structures (version 29.0). The qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis MAIN FINDINGS: The quantitative results showed a significant positive relationship between recruitment and selection, job analysis, employer branding and competitive advantage. The qualitative findings confirmed that talent attraction strategies created a competitive advantage for HEIs by hiring highly talented employees PRACTICAL/MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS: The research findings could be a viable tool to create value for HEIs by adopting different talent attraction strategies to acquire highly talented employees CONTRIBUTION/VALUE-ADD: This study sheds more light on the talent attraction practices that create value for HEIs

RESUMO Antecedentes: As dificuldades de nomeação e de evocação lexical são sintomas comuns de afasia. A nomeação é geralmente avaliada por objetos reais, imagens ou desenhos de contorno, impressos. Objetivo: Este estudo visa investigar se a capacidade de nomear objetos em pessoas com afasia é influenciada pelas dimensões dos estímulos visuais e compreender se a ordem de apresentação dos estímulos, os anos de escolaridade e o tempo de evolução estão envolvidos no sucesso da nomeação. Métodos: A nomeação de pessoas saudáveis e pessoas com afasia, em fase aguda ou crónica, por AVC foi avaliada com dois conjuntos de 24 estímulos, objetos reais e fotografias a cores, dos mesmos objetos, apresentadas num ecrã. Os resultados obtidos nas duas condições foram comparados por uma ANOVA para amostras emparelhadas, controlando para a ordem de apresentação. Resultados: Foram incluídos 40 sujeitos com afasia (62,4±17,3 anos de idade, 70% mulheres, com uma escolaridade média de 8,5±5,3 anos, 60% avaliados nos primeiros 8 dias após o acidente vascular cerebral) e um grupo de controlo de 50 pessoas saudáveis, emparelhadas para a idade, sexo e escolaridade. A nomeação de objetos foi significativamente melhor do que a nomeação de fotografias a cores (p=.001), mas isso não se verificou nos controles. A idade, a escolaridade, o tempo de evolução e a sequência de apresentação não tiveram impacto na nomeação dos dois tipos de estímulos. Conclusão: Estes resultados sugerem que a utilização de fotografias digitais a cores para avaliar a nomeação de objetos na afasia pode ser associada a um pior desempenho quando comparada com objetos reais. Isto deve ser tido em conta quando são apresentadas diferentes formas de estímulos nas reavaliações.

ABSTRACT Background: Naming and lexical retrieval difficulties are common symptoms of aphasia. Naming abilities are usually evaluated by means of real objects or pictures or line drawings that are printed. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether the ability to name objects among individuals with aphasia is influenced by the dimensions of the visual stimuli and to understand whether the order of presentation of the stimuli, number of years of education and length of time post-onset are involved in the success of naming. Methods: The naming abilities of healthy controls and patients with acute or chronic aphasia due to stroke were assessed through presentation of two sets of 24 stimuli consisting of real objects and color photographs of the same objects presented on a screen. The results obtained under these two conditions were compared by means of within-subject paired ANOVA, controlling for presentation order. Results: 40 patients (62.4 ± 17.3 years old; 70% females; mean education level of 8.5 ± 5.3 years; and 60% evaluated within the first eight days after stroke) and 50 controls that were age, gender and education-matched were included. Object naming was significantly better than naming color photographs among the patients (p = 0.001), but no differences were observed among the controls. Age, education, length of time post-onset and presentation sequence did not have any impact on naming performance. Conclusion: These results suggest that use of digital color photographs for naming objects in assessment of aphasia may be associated with lower naming performance, compared with use of real objects. This needs to be taken into account when different forms of stimuli are presented in sequential aphasia evaluations.

Abstract Introduction: This study was developed within the scope of the Summer School “Mentors in Action”, of a higher education institution, an activity financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology, which had the purpose of creating a Mentoring Plan to be implemented in a higher education institution, from September 2020, following the mentoring pilot project carried out in the academic year 2019-2020, in only two organic units of this higher education institution. Objectives: To systematize the main restrictions on mentoring; and to understand the main constraints resulting from the mentoring experience. Recognizing the enormous importance and responsibility of higher education institutions for welcoming new students, the Mentoring Program has the main objective of promoting the sharing of mentoring experiences and providing a supportive and healthy living environment in HEIs, contributing for the inclusion of all students. We want to build and implement a Mentoring Plan in all organic units of a higher education institution, from the beginning of the academic year 2020-2021. Methods: Descriptive and exploratory study, of qualitative nature. Analysis of the data collected in the pilot project “Inclusive Practices of a higher education institution: Perceptions on the implementation of a Mentoring Program”, carried out using the portfolio method and focused on 2 groups of the represented universe: mentors and mentors. Bibliographic review on the topic “Mentoring in Higher Education and its main constraints”, in order to identify which constraints and difficulties were identified in similar experiences. Results: The constraints identified in the study were classified into nineteen subcategories: “no definition of a healthy contact limit”; “Too paternalistic relationship”; “Separation issue”; “Unavailability for program activities”; “Lack of motivation to perform the role”; “Personality incompatibility”; “Shyness”; “Not responding to the type of support that mentors seek”; “Blockade and initial panic on the part of the mentee”; “Lack of availability to train mentors within the curriculum”; “Lack of institutional disclosure and non-recognition”; “Overlapping curricular and mentoring activities”; “Lack of timely and efficient organization of actions”; “There are no institutional policies of compromise”, “excessive bureaucracy”, “Not correct management of time and space”; “Lack of training of stakeholders”; “Little proximity” and “reduced overall program duration”. Conclusion: This research work provided another approach to mentoring in terms of form and style. However, there should be no doubt that mentoring is always an instrument for the inclusion of all students, regardless of their individual characteristics, and the mentor must be supportive, a source of support, a support, not assuming protagonism, since the centre of the Mentoring Program are students and their full inclusion in the institutional and academic universe.

Resumo Introdução: Este estudo foi desenvolvido no âmbito da Escola de Verão “Mentores em ação”, numa Instituição de Ensino Superior, atividade financiada pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, a qual teve como propósito a criação de um Plano de Mentoria para ser implementado em todas as Unidades Orgânicas da Instituição de Ensino Superior, a partir de setembro de 2020, no seguimento do projeto piloto de mentoria levado a cabo no ano letivo de 2019-2020, em duas unidades orgânicas dessa instituição de ensino superior. Objetivo: Sistematizar as principais restrições à mentoria; e compreender os principais constrangimentos resultantes da experiência de mentoria. Reconhecendo a enorme importância e a responsabilidade das instituições do ensino superior pelos processos de acolhimento dos novos estudantes, o Programa de Mentoria tem como principal objetivo promover a partilha de experiências de mentoria e proporcionar um ambiente solidário e saudável de vivência nas IES, contribuindo para a inclusão de todos os estudantes. Queremos construir e implementar um Plano de Mentoria em todas as unidades orgânicas da Instituição de Ensino Superior, a partir do início do ano letivo 2020-2021. Métodos: Estudo descritivo e exploratório, de natureza qualitativa. Análise dos dados recolhidos no projeto piloto “Práticas Inclusivas numa Instituição de Ensino Superior: Perceções sobre a implementação de um Programa de Mentoria”, realizada através do método do ePortfólio e focalizada em 2 grupos do universo representado: mentores e mentorados. Enquadrar os fundamentos teóricos da temática “Mentoria no Ensino Superior e os seus principais constrangimentos”, de modo a identificar os constrangimentos e as dificuldades identificados em experiências similares de outras instituições de ensino superior. Resultados: Os constrangimentos identificados no estudo foram classificados em dezanove subcategorias: “não definição de um limite saudável de contacto”; “relação demasiado paternalista”; “problemática da separação”; “indisponibilidade para as atividades do programa”; “falta de motivação para desempenhar a função”; “incompatibilidade de personalidades”; “timidez”; “não resposta ao tipo de apoio que os mentorados procuram”; “bloqueio e pânico inicial por parte do mentorado”; “falta de disponibilidade para a formação dos mentores dentro do plano curricular”; “falta de divulgação e o não reconhecimento institucionais”; “sobreposição das atividades curriculares e de mentoria”; “falta de organização atempada e eficiente das ações”; “não existirem políticas institucionais de compromisso”, “excessiva burocracia”, “Não gestão correta de tempo e espaço”; “falta de formação dos intervenientes”; “pouca proximidade” e “reduzida duração global do programa”. Conclusão: Este trabalho de investigação proporcionou outra abordagem à mentoria quanto à forma e ao estilo. Não devem, contudo, restar dúvidas de que a mentoria é sempre um instrumento para a inclusão de todos os estudantes, independentemente das suas características individuais, devendo o mentor ser solidário, uma fonte de apoio, um suporte, não assumindo protagonismos, pois o centro do Programa de Mentoria são os estudantes e a sua plena inclusão no universo institucional e académico.

Overview and Aims: Intrauterine systems (IUS) are one of the most effective forms of long acting reversible birth control, with low failure rates and high continuity and satisfaction rates. Still, they account for a small proportion of contraception use, which may be due to several myths and misperceptions. With this study, we aimed to assess Portuguese experts’ perceptions on potential benefits and fears that may limit women’s contraception choice and to identify current trends in clinical practice. Methods and Population: We performed an observational, descriptive and analytical study in which gynecologists/obstetricians were invited to answer an anonymous questionnaire by call or email made of multiple-choice questions on IUS use. Results: A total of 482 Portuguese Gynecologists answered the survey, of which 97.1% revealed that the insertion of IUS is a common procedure in their current clinical practice. More than 95% considered the insertion of IUS an easy procedure and a safe contraceptive method. Cost-efficacy and the fact that this method doesn’t rely on women´s action to be effective were the top benefits for IUS users, perceived by the physicians. On the other hand, concern about having a foreign object inside the body and fear of insertion pain were perceived by the physicians as the top barriers to IUS use. Female gynecologists perceived a higher degree of pain associated with IUS insertion (p=0.021). Overall, gynecology experts’ opinions were conservative regarding IUS recommendations to women. Conclusions: The results of this study provide a general insight towards Portuguese gynecologists’ perceptions, opinions and attitudes on the use of IUS. Most of the experts consider IUS a safe contraception method but, on the other hand, there is still concern about its use in particular female conditions which may in part contribute to the low rate of IUS use in Portuguese women.

Resumo Objetivos Validar e adaptar para português europeu um conjunto de dilemas morais amplamente utilizado, que poderá ser aplicado para avaliar a tomada de decisão moral. Além disso, comparou-se a formulação clássica dos dilemas com uma versão alternativa, que incluía uma questão mais focada na moralidade. Finalmente, testou-se uma versão reduzida dos cenários morais. Métodos A versão portuguesa dos dilemas morais foi testada em 53 participantes de várias regiões de Portugal, e a versão alternativa foi testada em 41 sujeitos. Finalmente, a versão reduzida dos dilemas morais foi testada numa amostra de 137 participantes. Resultados Não houve diferenças significativas entre a versão portuguesa e a inglesa. A pergunta “É moralmente aceitável...?” evocou menos respostas utilitárias que a versão original, embora não tenham sido obtidas diferenças significativas. A versão portuguesa original, a alternativa e a reduzida evidenciaram o mesmo padrão de respostas, sugerindo que os elementos fundamentais para a tomada de decisão moral estão preservados. Conclusões Encontramos evidências para a validade intercultural dos dilemas morais. No entanto, o foco moral colocado na questão final pode afetar os juízos utilitários/deontológicos.

Abstract Objective To adapt and validate a widely used set of moral dilemmas to European Portuguese, which can be applied to assess decision-making. Moreover, the classical formulation of the dilemmas was compared with a more focused moral probe. Finally, a shorter version of the moral scenarios was tested. Methods The Portuguese version of the set of moral dilemmas was tested in 53 individuals from several regions of Portugal. In a second study, an alternative way of questioning on moral dilemmas was tested in 41 participants. Finally, the shorter version of the moral dilemmas was tested in 137 individuals. Results Results evidenced no significant differences between English and Portuguese versions. Also, asking whether actions are “morally acceptable” elicited less utilitarian responses than the original question, although without reaching statistical significance. Finally, all tested versions of moral dilemmas exhibited the same pattern of responses, suggesting that the fundamental elements to the moral decision-making were preserved. Conclusions We found evidence of cross-cultural validity for moral dilemmas. However, the moral focus might affect utilitarian/deontological judgments.

ABSTRACT This article summarizes the current challenges of family medicine in Latin America and proposes possible lines of action to consolidate its development. In the last 40 years, the health systems of the Region of the Americas have faced reforms whose results were negative in terms of equity, and primary health care, far from being a strategy designed to reduce it, was restricted to a selective and focal policy. In this context, the technical proposals for expansion of training positions in family medicine and their insertion in medical careers have lacked consistency and a clear political direction, and thus their lack of effectiveness can be considered a symptom of these incomplete reforms. In this regard, the Ibero-American Confederation of Family Medicine made recommendations on the political commitment of governments to ensure the necessary structure and funding, consolidate the model of family medicine as a mechanism for the implementation of primary health care, the hierarchy of programs of training, the working conditions of family doctors and professional certification, among others. These technical recommendations, without a consistent and timely political action, will not be more successful than previous attempts.

RESUMEN Este documento tiene por objetivos resumir los desafíos actuales de la medicina familiar en América Latina y proponer posibles líneas de acción para consolidar su desarrollo. En los últimos 40 años, los sistemas de salud de la Región de las Américas han encarado reformas cuyos resultados fueron negativos en términos de equidad, y la atención primaria de la salud, lejos de ser aquella estrategia destinada a reducirla, se restringió a una política focal y selectiva. En este contexto, las propuestas técnicas de expansión de las plazas de formación en medicina familiar y su inserción en las carreras de Medicina, han carecido de coherencia y de una dirección política clara, por lo que su falta de eficacia puede leerse como un síntoma de estas reformas incompletas. Al respecto, la Confederación Iberoamericana de Medicina Familiar realizó recomendaciones sobre el compromiso político de los gobiernos para asegurar la estructura y el financiamiento necesarios, consolidar el modelo de medicina familiar como mecanismo de instrumentación de la atención primaria de la salud, la jerarquización de los programas de formación, las condiciones laborales de los médicos de familia y la certificación profesional, entre otras. Estas recomendaciones técnicas, sin acción política coherente y oportuna, no serán más exitosas que los intentos previos.

RESUMO Este documento tem como objetivo resumir os desafios atuais da medicina familiar na América Latina e propor possíveis linhas de ação para consolidar seu desenvolvimento. Nos últimos 40 anos, os sistemas de saúde da Região das Américas encararam reformas cujos resultados foram negativos em termos de igualdade, e a atenção primária à saúde, longe de sê-la aquela estratégia destinada a reducir-la, restringiu-se a uma política focal e seletiva. Neste contexto, as propostas técnicas de expansão das praças de formação em medicina familiar e sua inserção nas carreiras de Medicina, não dispuseram de coerência e de uma direção política clara, razão pela qual sua falta de eficácia se pode ler como um sintoma destas reformas incompletas. Neste sentido, a Confederação Ibero-americana de Medicina Familiar realizou recomendações sobre o compromisso político dos governos a fim de assegurar a estrutura e o financiamento necessários, consolidar o modelo de medicina familiar como mecanismo de instrumentação da atenção primária à saúde, a hierarquização dos programas de formação, as condições laborais dos médicos de família e a certificação profissional, entre outras. Estas recomendações técnicas, sem ação política coerente e oportuna, não serão mais exitosos que as tentativas prévias.

Neste artigo analisamos um texto sobre educação para o trânsito de um livro didático de ciências do ensino fundamental autorado por pesquisadores e aprovado pelo PNLD, na sua relação com os aportes teóricos da Ciência-Tecnologia-Sociedade (CTS) com base na análise crítica do discurso. Os resultados apontaram estratégias discursivas que recontextualizam, sobretudo, o conceito de velocidade com questões socioambientais das grandes cidades implicando os estudantes pela reflexão dos riscos (nível individual e coletivo) exposição de posicionamentos e problematização de ações cotidianas envolvendo deslocamento de pessoas e veículos (segurança no trânsito, tecnologia dos automóveis, acidentes).

In this article we analyze a text about traffic education from a science textbook of elementary school written by researchers and approved by the Brazilian Science Textbook Evaluation Program, in its relationship with the theoretical contributions of Science-Technology-Society (STS) based on critical discourse analysis The results point discursive strategies recontextualized mainly the concept of velocity, comprising environmental issues of major cities in the involvement of students through, risk reflection (individual and collective), exposure placements and the problems found by everyday actions involving movement of people and vehicles (traffic safety, automobile technology, accidents).

RESUMO: Este artigo problematiza a relação entre o ensino de ciências e a cidadania. O tema se justifica pelo fato de que, atualmente, tanto as pesquisas educacionais como as políticas e os parâmetros curriculares trazem a formação para a cidadania para o centro do debate sem, no entanto, esclarecerem esse conceito. O texto explora o conceito de cidadania sob três enfoques principais: (i) a crítica ao sentido de cidadania presente no liberalismo clássico; (ii) os sentidos de cidadania em diferentes modelos políticos; (iii) os sentidos de cidadania para o ensino de ciências nas políticas educacionais brasileiras desde a década de 1930. Por fim, levantamos questões para repensarmos esse binômio e desnaturalizarmos a relação linear entre ciências e cidadania.

ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the relationship between science education and citizenship. This theme's choice is justified by the fact that educational policies, guidelines and parameters currently bring training for citizenship to the debate's core without, however, clarify this concept. The text explores citizenship's concept with three main focuses: (i) citizenship's critique in classical liberalism; (ii) citizenship's meanings in different political models; (iii) citizenship's meanings for science education in Brazilian educational policies since the 1930. Finally, we raise issues to rethink this binomial and deconstruct the linear relationship between science learning and citizenship.

RESUMEN: Este artículo problematiza la relación entre la enseñanza de las ciencias y la ciudadanía. El tema se justifica por el hecho de que, actualmente, tanto las investigaciones cómo las políticas y los parámetros curriculares traen la formación para la ciudadanía para el centro del debate sin, sin embargo, aclarar ese concepto. El texto explora el concepto de ciudadanía bajo tres enfoques principales: (i) la crítica al sentido de ciudadanía presente en el liberalismo clásico; (ii) los sentidos de ciudadanía en diferentes modelos políticos; (iii) los sentidos de ciudadanía para la enseñanza de las ciencias en las políticas educaci0onales brasileñas desde la década de 1930. Al fin, levantamos cuestiones para repensar ese binomio y desnaturalizar la relación lineal entre ciencias y ciudadanía.

A investigação em educação em ciências tem produzido conhecimento que permite compreender os problemas e fundamentar decisões de ensino das ciências. Algumas organizações internacionais (como UE, OCDE e UNESCO) também têm emitido documentos reguladores de políticas globais de ensino das ciências, assumindo que a qualidade da educação científica é uma condição de prosperidade económica e social dos estados. Neste estudo procedeu-se à revisão sistemática de documentos de natureza académica e de natureza política, relativos ao ensino das ciências, assumindo que a qualidade da educação científica é uma condição de prosperidade económica e social dos estados. Neste estudo procedeu-se à revisão sistemática de documentos de natureza académica e de natureza política, relativos ao ensino das ciências, visando identificar quais os seus pontos de convergência. Apurou-se o referencial Cinco Orientações para o Ensino das Ciências, que identifica aspetos-chave a priorizar no ensino das ciências e na formação de professores. Verificou-se que as orientações de ensino das ciências de cariz CTS permanecem um campo didático promissor e atual do ponto de vista académico e político.

Research in science education has been producing knowledge that grants the understanding of problems and supports science education decisions. Some international organizations (such as EU, OECD and UNESCO) have also been producing documents to regulate global policies of science teaching, assuming that the scientific education is a requirement for economic and social prosperity. In this paper, the authors perform a systematic review of academic and political documents for science education, aiming to identify their points of convergence. The document Five Guidelines For Science Education was established as a standard to identify priorities for science teaching and teachers education. With this document, STS science education becomes a promising educational field and a topical issue from the academic and political point of view.

La investigación en educación en ciencias ha producido conocimientos que nos permiten comprender los problemas y fundamentar las decisiones relacionadas con la enseñanza de las ciencias. Algunas organizaciones internacionales (tales como la UE, la OCDE y la UNESCO) también vienen emitiendo documentos normativos sobre las políticas globales de la enseñanza de las ciencias, en el supuesto de que la calidad de la educación científica es una condición para la prosperidad económica y social de los Estados. En este artículo se procedió a la revisión sistemática de documentos de naturaleza académica y política, relacionados con la enseñanza de las ciencias, con el propósito de identificar sus puntos de convergencia. Se llegó al referencial Cinco directrices para la enseñanza de las ciencias, que identifica cuestiones prioritarias en la educación científica y en la formación docente. Se verificó que las directrices para la enseñanza de las ciencias de cariz CTS siguen siendo un campo didáctico promisorio y actual tanto desde el punto de vista académico e político.
