ABSTRACT The number of patients undergoing hemodialysis treatment increases and, consequently, the volume of effluent generated. This effluent presents high concentration of salts, nitrogen, and organic matter; furthermore, it may contain drugs and microorganisms. At the municipal level, hemodialysis effluent is piped to sewage networks and discharged to surface water. Toxicological tests using seeds provide reliable answers, with simplicity and low cost of procedures and materials; however, it does not allow to identify the agent that causes toxicity, but the toxicity of the set of contaminants. In this sense, the objective of this work was to evaluate phytotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and genotoxicity of the hemodialysis effluent generated in the largest hospital of the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul. Composite samples collected at the beginning, middle and end of each session on five machines and different shifts were used. Pure and diluted effluent, water for the composition of the dialysate, pure and diluted dialysate and control were tested. The phytotoxicity tests were performed with seeds of Verde Comprido cucumber, and Regina de Verão and Rabo-de-Galo lettuce. For cytogenotoxicity analyses, Baia Periforme onion seeds were used. It was observed that the pure hemodialysis effluent and dialysate had a toxic effect on all analyzed seeds. Although the diluted effluent did not cause phytotoxicity in lettuce and cucumber, cytogenotoxicity tests showed a decrease in mitotic index and appearance of chromosomal aberrations in onion cells, indicating toxicity at a cellular and genetic level. These results allow to conclude that this effluent cannot be directly dumped into water resources, nor can it be reused in irrigation without prior treatment.

RESUMO Cresce o número de pacientes em tratamento hemodialítico e, com isso, o volume de efluente gerado. Esse efluente possui alta concentração de sais, compostos nitrogenados e matéria orgânica; ainda, pode conter fármacos e microrganismos. No âmbito municipal, o efluente gerado é aportado nas redes de esgoto e lançado em recursos hídricos superficiais. Testes toxicológicos com o uso de sementes fornecem confiáveis respostas, com simplicidade e baixo custo de procedimentos e materiais; todavia, não possibilitam identificar o agente causador de toxidez, mas da toxicidade do conjunto de contaminantes. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar fitotoxicidade, citotoxicidade e genotoxicidade do efluente hemodialítico gerado no maior hospital da região sul do Rio Grande do Sul. Utilizaram-se amostras compostas coletadas no início, meio e fim de cada sessão, em cinco máquinas e diferentes turnos. Foram testados efluente puro e diluído, água para composição do dialisato, dialisato puro e diluído e controle. Os testes de fitotoxicidade foram realizados com sementes de pepino Verde Comprido, alface Regina de Verão e Rabo-de-Galo. Para análises de citogenotoxicidade, utilizaram-se sementes de cebola Baia Periforme. Observou-se que o efluente hemodialítico e o dialisato puros exerceram efeito tóxico em todas as sementes analisadas. Embora o efluente diluído não tenha causado fitotoxicidade na alface e no pepino, testes de citogenotoxicidade mostraram diminuição do índice mitótico e aparecimento de aberrações cromossômicas em células de cebola, indicando toxicidade em nível celular e genético. Esses resultados permitem concluir que tal efluente não pode ser aportado diretamente em recursos hídricos, tampouco reutilizado na irrigação sem tratamento prévio.

RESUMO O desempenho produtivo dos citros é limitado por fatores abióticos, a exemplo da salinidade. A resposta a esses fatores é variável entre porta-enxertos, podendo-se identificar, em conformidade com cada ambiente de cultivo, genótipos agronomicamente mais adequados, que garantem a sustentabilidade do sistema produtivo. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho produtivo da limeira ácida ‘Tahiti’ em combinação com distintos porta-enxertos irrigados com águas contendo diferentes níveis de salinidade, durante o primeiro ano de produção de frutos. Foram avaliadas três condutividades elétricas da água de irrigação (0,14, 2,40 e 4,80 dS m-1) e 13 porta-enxertos (limoeiro ‘Cravo Santa Cruz’, citrandarins ‘Indio’, ‘Riverside’ e ‘San Diego’, tangerineira ‘Sunki Tropical’ e oito híbridos gerados pelo Programa de Melhoramento Genético de Citros da Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura). O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições e uma planta por parcela. No período entre 300 e 720 dias após o transplantio (DAT) para vasos com capacidade de 60 L, adaptados como lisímetros, foram realizadas colheitas de frutos, contabilizando-se a produção de frutos, em peso e número, além de serem mensurados o tamanho e a espessura da casca destes. Constatou-se que águas de até 2,4 dS m-1 podem ser utilizadas na irrigação de citros sem comprometer, significativamente, a produção da inicial de frutos da limeira ácida ‘Tahiti’ quando enxertada na tangerineira ‘Sunki Tropical’, no citrandarin ‘Riverside’ e nos híbridos TSKC x TRBK - 007, TSKC x CTTR - 012, HTR - 069, TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 040 e TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 059, que determinaram maior precocidade de início de produção. Quanto ao nível de salinidade da água de 4,8 dS m-1, a limeira ácida ‘Tahiti’ mostrou-se mais produtiva e menos sensível em combinação com a tangerineira ‘Sunki Tropical’ e com os híbridos TSKC x TRBK - 007, TSKC x CTTR - 012, HTR - 069, and TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 040.

ABSTRACT The productive performance of citrus plants is limited by abiotic factors such as salinity. The response to these factors varies among rootstocks, and to guarantee sustainability of the production system, it is possible to identify the most suitable genotypes agronomically for each growing environment. Given the above, the aim of this study was to evaluate the productive performance of the ‘Tahiti’ acid lime combined with different citrus rootstocks irrigated with water at different levels of salinity during the first year of fruit production. Three levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water (0.14, 2.40 and 4.80 dS m-1) and 13 rootstocks (‘Santa Cruz Rangpur’ lime, ‘Indio’, ‘Riverside’ and ‘San Diego’ citrandarins, ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin and eight hybrids generated by the Citrus Breeding Program of Embrapa Cassava & Fruits). The experimental design was of randomised blocks, with four replications and one plant per plot. The fruits were harvested from 300 to 720 days after transplanting (DAT) to pots with a capacity of 60 L, which had been adapted for use as lysimeters. Fruit production was determined by weight and number, in addition to measuring the size and the thickness of the peel. It was found that water of up to 2.4 dS m-1 can be used for citrus irrigation without significantly compromising early fruit production in the ‘Tahiti’ acid lime when grafted on the ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin, ‘Riverside’ citrandarin, and on the hybrids TSKC x TRBK - 007, TSKC x CTTR - 012, HTR - 069, TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 040 and TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 059, which resulted in an earlier start to production. At the salinity level of 4.8 dS m-1, the ‘Tahiti’ acid lime proved to be more productive and less sensitive when grafted onto ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin, TSKC x TRBK - 007, TSKC x CTTR - 012, HTR - 069, and TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 040 hybrids.

RESUMO Objetivou-se estudar fluorescência da clorofila ‘a’ e o quenching fotoquímico da limeira ácida ‘Tahiti’ enxertada em novos genótipos de citros sob irrigação com três tipos de água na fase de prefloração do primeiro ano de cultivo, no intuito de verificar se a fluorescência da clorofila ‘a’ e o quenching fotoquímico são indicativos do início do estresse iônico. No experimento, foram avaliados três condutividades elétricas da água de irrigação (0,14, 2,40 e 4,80 dS m-1), e 13 porta-enxertos de citros, correspondentes ao limoeiro ‘Cravo Santa Cruz’, três Citrandarins, a tangerineira ‘Sunki Tropical’ e oito híbridos de citros, todos enxertados com a limeira ácida ‘Tahiti’, no delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Foi avaliada, aos 70 dias após o transplante, a fluorescência da clorofila ‘a’. O quenching fotoquímico indica início do estresse iônico em plantas de citros sob irrigação com águas salinas; a limeira ácida ‘Tahiti’ enxertada nos genótipos TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 059, limoeiro ‘Cravo Santa Cruz’, Citrandarin ‘Riverside’, Citrandarin ‘San Diego’ e TSKC x TRBK - 007 têm maior ativação de mecanismos de proteção por meio da fluorescência transiente.

ABSTRACT The objective was to study the chlorophyll ‘a’ fluorescence and the photochemical quenching from ‘Tahiti’ acid lime grafted in new citrus genotypes under irrigation with three types of water during prefloration phase of the first year of cultivation, purposing to verify if the chlorophyll ‘a’ fluorescence and the photochemical quenching are indicatives of the beginning of ionic stress. An experiment was set up with three irrigation water salinity levels (0.14, 2.40 and 4.80 dS m-1), and 13 citrus rootstock, corresponding to ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime, three Citrandarins, the ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin and eight citrus hybrids, all grafted with the ‘Tahiti’ acid lime, using randomized block design with four replications. At 70 days after transplanting, the chlorophyll a fluorescence of the plants were evaluated. Photochemical quenching indicates begin of ionic saline stress in citrus plants; The ‘Tahiti’ acid lime grafted on TSKC x (LCR x TR) - 059, ‘Rangpur Santa Cruz’ lime, the Citrandarins ‘Riverside’ and ‘San Diego’ and TSKC x TRBK - 007 genotypes has greater activation of protective mechanisms through transient fluorescence.

Resumo Este artigo analisa os impactos de curto e de longo prazo das desvalorizações cambiais sobre as exportações líquidas totais, de básicos e de industrializados para um painel de estados brasileiros a partir da aplicação de modelos Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR), para testar a ocorrência do fenômeno da curva J, e do Panel Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (PDOLS), para investigar a validade da condição de Marshall-Lerner. Em todos os modelos considerados a resposta das exportações líquidas dos estados brasileiros a uma depreciação cambial se mostra positiva, validando, portanto, a condição de Marshall-Lerner. Essa resposta é maior para os bens industrializados. Como previsto pela teoria, a renda doméstica apresenta impacto negativo e estatisticamente robusto sobre o saldo comercial, enquanto a renda externa apresenta repercussão positiva. Os resultados indicam a ocorrência da curva J para os totais e os industrializados.

Abstract This paper analyses the short and long run effects of exchange rate devaluation on the net exports, in the trade balance, as well as in the balances of basics and industrial goods for a panel of Brazilian states, making use of Panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) models and Panel Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (PDOLS) estimators. The first technique is used to investigate the existence of the J curve phenomenon, and the latter to validate of Marshall-Lerner condition. In all cases, the response of the net exports from that states after an exchange rate devaluation is shown to be positive, thus confirming the Marshall-Lerner condition. This response is greater for trade balance of industrialized goods. As described by the theoretical model, domestic income presents a negative and statistically robust impact in all net exports considered, while foreign income presents a positive effect. The results still show evidence of the J curve for the total and industrialized goods.

Resumo: A busca por testes que ofereçam rapidez e informações seguras sobre o potencial fisiológico das sementes, torna-se de fundamental importância para programas de controle de qualidade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência do teste de lixiviação de potássio na identificação de diferentes níveis de vigor de lotes de sementes de milho pipoca. Cinco lotes de sementes dos híbridos AP8203 e AP4512 foram submetidos à determinação do teor de água e à avaliação da qualidade fisiológica por meio dos testes de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, emergência de plântulas em campo e os resultados comparados as variações no teste de lixiviação de potássio (temperaturas de 25 ºC e 30 ºC; volumes de 50 mL e 75 mL de água; cinquenta e cem sementes; e períodos de 0.5 h, 1 h, 1.5 h, 2 h, 2.5 h, 3, 4 e 5 h). Pelos resultados obtidos verificou-se que o teste de lixiviação de potássio é eficiente na separação dos lotes de sementes de milho pipoca com relação ao potencial fisiológico e a condição mais adequada para a realização deste teste é a utilização de cinquenta sementes com 50 mL de água, por duas horas, a 30 ºC.

Abstract: The search for tests that offer fast and reliable information on the physiological potential of seeds is of fundamental importance for quality control programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of the potassium leaching test in identification of different vigor levels of popcorn seed lots. Five seed lots of the hybrids AP8203 and AP4512 were tested for moisture content, and physiological quality was evaluated by tests of germination, first count of germination, and seedling emergence in the field. These results were compared to variations in the potassium leaching test (temperatures of 25 °C and 30 °C, volumes of 50 mL and 75 mL of water, fifty and one hundred seeds, and periods of 0.5 h, 1 h, 1.5 h, 2 h, 2.5 h, 3 h, 4 h and 5 h). Results showed that the potassium leaching test is efficient in separating the popcorn seed lots regarding physiological potential, and the most adequate conditions for this test are the use of fifty seeds with 50 mL of water for two hours at 30 ºC.

Os testes de vigor foram desenvolvidos para compensar as deficiências do teste de germinação. Objetivou-se avaliar a utilização do teste de condutividade elétrica na avaliação do potencial fisiológico de sementes de grão-de-bico. Quatro lotes de sementes da cultivar BRS Aleppo, foram submetidos a testes de germinação e vigor (primeira contagem da germinação, emergência das plântulas, índice de velocidade de emergência e envelhecimento acelerado). Para o teste de condutividade elétrica, foram estudadas variações no volume de água (50 e 75mL), temperatura (25 e 30ºC), número de sementes (25 e 50) e tempo de embebição (1, 2, 4, 6, 12, 18 e 24 horas). O teste de condutividade elétrica foi eficiente para a avaliação do vigor de sementes de grão-de-bico, com o tempo de embebição podendo ser reduzido para quatro horas, porém a utilização de 50 sementes não permitiu diferenciar os lotes. O volume de 25mL em temperatura de 30°C foi a condição mais favorável para a ordenação consistente dos lotes quanto ao vigor, de forma que a condição mais adequada para o teste de condutividade elétrica em sementes de grão-de-bico é a utilização de 25 sementes em 50mL de água por quatro horas a 30ºC.

The vigor tests were developed to compensate for deficiencies in the germination test. This study aimed to evaluate the use of electrical conductivity in the physiological potential of chickpeas seeds. Four seed lots of cultivar ‘BRS Aleppo, were tested for germination, first count germination, seedling emergence, speed of emergence and accelerated aging. For the electrical conductivity were studied variations in the volume of water (50 and 75mL), temperature (25 and 30ºC), number of seeds (25 and 50) and imbibed (1, 2, 4, 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours). The electrical conductivity test was efficient for the chickpeas seeds, and the soaking time can be reduced to four hours, but using 50 seeds failed to differentiate between batches. The volume of 25mL and 30°C was the most favorable condition for the consistent ordering of the lots on the force. The best conditions for the electrical conductivity in chickpeas seed are the use of 25 seeds in 50mL of water for four hours at 30ºC.

RESUMO: A leptospirose é uma zoonose amplamente distribuída em países tropicais. Essa infecção também está associada a perdas reprodutivas na pecuária, apresentando uma relevância econômica notável. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a soroprevalência e os fatores de risco associados à infecção por leptospirose em rebanhos comerciais de ovinos da mesorregião noroeste do Rio Grande do Sul. Amostras de soro de 319 ovelhas foram analisadas pelo Teste de Aglutinação Microscópica (MAT). No momento da amostragem foi realizado um questionário individual e de rebanho para investigar os fatores de risco. No nível individual, reações positivas foram observadas em 5.6% (18/319) dos soros estudados, sendo Sejroe o sorogrupo mais prevalente. Animals >3 years old were more likely to be seropositive than animals 1-3 years old (OR 14.4; 95% CI 1.9-110). A predominância do sorogrupo Sejroe chama a atenção para a infecção subclínica associada a perdas econômicas. Portanto, reitera-se a importância da manutenção de medidas de prevenção e controle da leptospirose entre os rebanhos ovinos da região estudada.

ABSTRACT: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis that is widely distributed in tropical countries. This infection is also associated with reproductive losses in livestock, which has a significant economic impact. The objective of this study is to investigate the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with leptospiral infection in commercial sheep flocks from the northwestern mesoregion of Rio Grande do Sul. Serum samples were analyzed in 319 sheep using the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT). At the time of sampling, an individual and herd questionnaire was carried out to investigate the risk factors. On an individual level, positive reactions were observed in 5.6% (18/319) of the studied sera, with Sejroe being the most prevalent serogroup. Animals >3 years old were more likely to be seropositive than animals 1-3 years old (OR 14.4; 95% CI 1.9-110). The predominance of Sejroe serogroup in this manner draws attention to how subclinical infection is associated with economic losses. Therefore, the importance of maintaining measures for the prevention and control of leptospirosis among the sheep flocks of the studied region is reiterated.

Abstract Objective: We aimed to determine whether patent foramen ovale closure reduces the risk of stroke, also assessing some safety outcomes. Introduction: The clinical benefit of closing a patent foramen ovale after a cryptogenic stroke has been an open question for several decades, so that it is necessary to review the current state of published medical data in this regard. Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTRAL/CCTR, SciELO, LI-LACS, Google Scholar and reference lists of relevant articles were searched for randomized controlled trials that reported any of the following outcomes: stroke, death, major bleeding or atrial fibrillation. Five studies fulfilled our eligibility criteria and included 3440 patients (1829 for patent foramen ovale closure and 1611 for medical therapy). Results: The risk ratio (RR) for stroke in the "device closure" group compared with the "medical therapy" showed a statistically significant difference between the groups, favouring the "device closure" group (RR 0.400; 95% CI 0.183-0.873, P=0.021). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the safety outcomes death and major bleeding, but we observed an increase in the risk of atrial fibrillation in the "device closure group (RR 4.000; 95% CI 2.262-7.092, P<0.001). We also observed that the larger the proportion of effective closure, the lower the risk of stroke. Conclusion: This meta-analysis found that stroke rates are lower with percutaneously implanted device closure than with medical therapy alone, being these rates modulated by the rates of effective closure.

ABSTRACT This work describes the isolation, by high-speed counter-current chromatography, of the diterpenes manool, jhanol and steviol and the benzaldehyde p-oxy-2-ethylhexyl benzaldehyde from the stilt roots hexane extract of the mangrove plant Rhizophora mangle L., Rhizophoraceae. For this, a non-aqueous biphasic solvent system composed of hexane–acetonitrile–methanol 1:1:0.5 (v/v/v) was applied. As far as we know, only steviol was previously isolated in Rhizophoraceae and this is the first time that p-oxy-2-ethylhexyl benzaldehyde is reported.

RESUMO: Durante muito tempo, foi afirmado que a eliminação de leptospiras na urina era intermitente, o que havia sido demonstrado principalmente por meio do cultivo microbiano. No entanto, a cultura apresenta graves limitações, principalmente com relação à baixa sensibilidade. Em contraste, a PCR apresenta várias vantagens em relação ao cultivo bacteriológico para leptospiras, sendo esta ferramenta cada vez mais utilizada para o diagnóstico de animais eliminadores da bactéria em diversos sítios. Assim, o presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar a ocorrência de intermitência na eliminação de leptospiras por meio de PCR em animais natural e experimentalmente infectados. Para este estudo foram realizados dois experimentos, sendo o primeiro com 60 vacas naturalmente infectadas de um rebanho sabidamente endêmico e o segundo em três ovelhas experimentalmente infectadas, cada uma com uma estirpe diferente de Leptospira (estirpes Copenhageni L1-130, Canicola LO-4 e Pomona Fromm). Considerando-se os bovinos, 43,3% apresentaram negatividade em todos os testes, sendo os demais 56,7% positivos ao menos uma vez. Destes, apenas um (1,6%) foi positivo em todas as amostras, e sete (11,8%) foram positivos somente na última coleta, o que impossibilitou a avaliação da intermitência. Não obstante, 26 vacas naturalmente infectadas (43,3%) apresentaram o padrão de eliminação tipicamente intermitente de leptospiras na urina. Das três ovelhas experimentalmente infectadas, todas apresentaram eliminação intermitente da bactéria na urina, independentemente da estirpe inoculada. Consideramos que seria necessária uma cuidadosa análise seriada de amostras de urina para um diagnóstico individual mais definitivo e confiável para uma terapia antimicrobiana bem-sucedida e o controle da leptospirose em um rebanho.

ABSTRACT: For a long time, it has been stated that urine leptospiral shedding is intermittent, which was observed primarily by culturing. However, culturing presents serious limitations, mainly low sensitivity, and failure on detection of leptospires cannot be neglected. PCR presents several advantages, mainly higher sensitivity. The present study aimed to analyze the occurrence of intermittency on leptospiral shedding by PCR in naturally and experimentally infected animals. In this study two experiments were conducted, the first with 60 cows naturally infected from an endemic herd. The second one was conducted in three sheep experimentally infected, each one with a different strain of Leptospira (strains Copenhageni L1-130, Canicola LO-4 and Pomona Fromm). Considering cattle, 43.3% presented negative in all tests, the remaining (56.7%) were positive at least once. From these, only one (1.6%) was positive in all samples, and seven (11.8%) were positive only in the last sampling, making it impossible to evaluate the intermittency. Noteworthy, 26 cows (43.3%) presented the typical intermittent pattern of leptospiral shedding in urine. In sheep, all experimentally infected animals presented the typical intermittent shedding patterns, independently of the inoculated leptospiral strain. We considered that a careful serial analysis of urine samples for a more definitive and reliable individual diagnosis would be required for a successful antimicrobial therapy and control of leptospirosis on a herd.

RESUMO: Este estudo avaliou a presença de vaginite e contagem bacteriana associada ao uso de diferentes dipositivos intravaginais em ovelhas. Vinte e quatro fêmeas Dorper e mestiças foram alocadas em três grupos e receberam implante intravaginal contendo 0,3g de progesterona (CIDR(r)), 60mg de acetato de medroxiprogesterona (MAP) ou esponjas sem progesterona (CONTROLE) por seis dias. Posteriormente, as ovelhas tratadas com CIDR e MAP receberam 12,5mg de dinoprost e 300 UI de eCG. Amostras do muco vaginal foram coletadas em quatro momentos: antes da inserção do dispositivo, no dia de sua retirada, 24 e 48 horas após. As amostras foram cultivadas e as colônias foram contadas (UFC mL-1) e identificadas. Os resultados obtidos da contagem das UFC mL-1 foram submetidos ao teste do qui-quadrado, com P<0,05 sendo considerado significativo. Antes da inserção do dispositivo, 68,2% das amostras continham Staphylococcus spp., sendo 60,0% delas Staphylococcus aureus. Após a remoção do implante, 100% das ovelhas apresentaram sinais clínicos de vaginite. Entretanto, o grau de infecção local nas ovelhas do grupo CONTROLE foi menor (P>0.05), em comparação com as ovelhas recebendo CIDR e MAP. Durante a ocorrência da vaginite, os isolados predominantes pertenciam ao grupo dos coliformes, principalmente Escherichia coli (72,7%). Tal infecção não foi determinada pelos membros da microbiota vaginal, que estavam presentes antes da inserção dos dispositivos, e a microbiota normal foi reestabelecida entre 24 e 48 horas após sua remoção.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the presence of vaginitis and the bacterial load associated with different intravaginal implants in ewes. Twenty-four Dorper and crossbred ewes were allocated into three groups and received intravaginal implant containing 0.3g progesterone (CIDR(r)), 60mg MAP or sponges without progesterone (CONTROL) for six days. Then, CIDR and MAP treated-ewes received 12.5mg dinoprost and 300IU eCG. Vaginal mucus samples were collected at four times: before device insertion, at the day of its removal, 24 and 48 hours after. The samples were cultured and the colonies were counted (CFU/mL) and identified. The results obtained from the counting of CFU mL-1 were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis H test, with P<0.05 being considered significant. Before device insertion, 68.2% of the samples yielded Staphylococcus spp. and 60.0% of them were Staphylococcus aureus. After implant removal, 100% of ewes had clinical signs of vaginitis. However, the level of local infection in the CONTROL-ewes was lower (P>0.05) in comparison with MAP and CIDR-treated ewes. During the occurrence of vaginitis, the predominant isolates belonged to the coliform group, mainly Escherichia coli (72.7%). Such infection was not determined by the members of the vaginal microbiota that were present before implant insertion and normal microbiota was restored between 24 to 48 hours after insert removal.

Com o intuito de otimizar o desempenho reprodutivo do jundiá Rhamdia quelen em cativeiro e evitar a ictioftiríase na larvicultura, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos da manutenção de reprodutores em diferentes concentrações salinas (0, 2, 4, 6 e 8‰) sobre a qualidade dos gametas e viabilidade da reprodução nestes meios. Os resultados demonstraram que o percentual de espermatozoides móveis permaneceu inalterado nas concentrações salinas entre 0 e 4‰, reduziu em 6‰ e não houve motilidade a 8‰, e que o tempo médio de motilidade aumentou aproximadamente 5 vezes em 6‰. Entretanto, a fertilização e eclosão foram inviáveis a partir de 4‰, demonstrando ação deletéria da salinidade sobre os ovócitos e também dos embriões. Assim, salinidade de até 4‰ pode ser empregada como método profilático ao ictio na manutenção de reprodutores de jundiá, embora a fertilização artificial e incubação tenham que ser realizadas em meio de água-doce

Attempting to improve reproduction performance and ichthyo prophylaxis, this study evaluated the effects of maintaining silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) broodstock in different saline concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6 and 8‰) on gametes quality and reproductive viability. The results showed that sperm percent motility did not change between 0 and 4‰, but it was reduced at 6‰, and sperm became immotile at 8‰ salinity. Sperm motility time was increased (almost five fold) at 6‰. Salinities up to 4‰ prevented fertilization and hatching, proving their deleterious effects on oocytes and embryos. Therefore, media up to 4‰ salinity may be an alternative for icthyo prophylaxis, although fertilization and incubation must be done in freshwater medium

O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar o primeiro isolamento e caracterização de Leptospira interrogans (sorogrupo Australis) a partir da urina de suínos no Brasil. O isolado foi caracterizado por sorogrupagem, MLVA, PGFE, e sequenciamento parcial de rrs e secY. Este foi identificado como pertencente ao sorogurpo Australis, provavelmente sorovar Bratislava (título 1600) e sequenciado como Leptospira interrogans. Os perfis de MLVA e PGFE também sugeriram o isolado como sorovar Bratislava, uma vez que estes foram indistinguíveis das cepas de referência Balico e Jez Bratislva. Este é o primeiro isolado de Leptospira interrogans sorogrupo Australis, provavelmente sorovar Bratislava, obtido no Brasil.

The purpose of this study was to report the first recovery and characterization of Leptospira interrogans (serogroup Australis) from urine of swine in Brazil. The isolate was studied by serogrouping, MLVA, PGFE, and partial sequencing of rrs and secY. It was serogrouped as serogroup Australis, probably serovar Bratislava (titre 1,600), and sequenced as Leptospira interrogans. The MLVA and PGFE profiles also suggested the isolate as serovar Bratislava, since they were indistinguishable from reference strains Balico and Jez Bratislava. This is the first Leptospira interrogans serogroup Australis isolate, probably serovar Bratislava, obtained in Brazil.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de restrição alimentar sobre o desempenho zootécnico e custo de alimentação em juvenis de tainha (Mugil liza). Foram avaliados cinco taxas de alimentação - 100, 80, 60, 40 e 20% da saciedade, denominados F100%, F80%, F60%, F40% e F20% -, em triplicata. Juvenis com 0,21±0,03 g (n=30) foram distribuídos em 15 tanques de 200 L. A estimativa do custo foi feita quanto à produção de mil juvenis de tainha. A sobrevivência foi superior a 93%, e não houve influência dos tratamentos. A taxa de crescimento específico no tratamento F100% foi de 5,96±0,18% por dia, e o peso final foi aproximadamente seis vezes maior que o inicial. Tainhas do tratamento F20% apresentaram menor índice hepatossomático, hepatócitos e núcleos menores e menor reserva de glicogênio hepático em relação aos demais tratamentos. A redução da taxa de alimentação influenciou negativamente o crescimento de juvenis de tainha. No entanto, uma taxa de alimentação em torno de 72% da saciedade é capaz de promover o melhor aproveitamento do alimento consumido, com 28% de redução do custo da ração.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of restricted feeding on the growth and fed costs of juvenile mullet (Mugil liza). Five feeding levels - 100, 80, 60, 40 e 20% satiation, named as F100%, F80%, F60%, F40% e F20% - were evaluated in triplicate. Juvenile mullets with 0.21±0.03 g (n=30) were randomly distributed in 15 tanks of 200 L. Cost estimation was done for the production of one thousand juvenile mullets. Survival was higher than 93%, and there was no influence of treatments. The specific growth rate of mullet in the F100% treatment was 5.96±0.18% per day, and the final weight was six-fold higher than the initial one. Mullets of the F20% treatment had the smallest liver somatic index, smallest hepatocytes and nuclei, and the smallest hepatic glycogen reserve, in comparison to fish of other treatments. The feeding level reduction hampered the juvenile mullet growth. However, a feeding level of about 72% satiation is capable of promoting a better utilization of the feed consumed, with 28% reduction of feed costs.
