A catarata está entre as afecções oculares mais frequentes em cães, sendo a facoemulsificação o método que melhor se adequa à sua terapia. A opacidade de cápsula posterior (OCP) encontra-se entre as complicações mais comuns e se manifesta em semanas ou meses após a facectomia. Lentes intraoculares, empregadas na correção da hipermetropia pós-cirúrgica, contribuem para a prevenção das OCPs, especialmente as acrílicas dobráveis, com bordas truncadas ou quadradas. Entretanto, a sua implantação pode resultar na perda de células endoteliais. Com a pesquisa, propuseram-se avaliar a morfologia e a celularidade endoteliais, a microscopia especular de não contato, em pacientes afácicos e em pseudofácicos. Foram analisados a densidade celular, a área celular, o coeficiente de variação e o percentual de células hexagonais inter e entre os grupos. Ao longo dos momentos da avaliação, a densidade das células endoteliais não se alterou significativamente dentro dos grupos. Na comparação entre os grupos, ela foi maior nos pseudofácicos, em períodos que variaram de 7 a 30 dias, entretanto retornaram a valores próximos aos iniciais, tornando a diferença entre os dois grupos não significativa ao final da avaliação. Relativamente à área celular e ao coeficiente de variação, não houve diferença significativa, inter e entre os grupos. Houve diferença dentro dos grupos relativamente à hexagonalidade, com diminuição percentual após a facoemulsificação. As condições retornaram ao basal. Na comparação entre pacientes pseudofácicos e afácicos, houve diminuição nos pseudofácicos imediatamente à cirurgia.

Cataract is one of the most common ocular diseases in dogs, and phacoemulsification is considered its treatment of choice. Posterior capsular opacity (PCO) is a frequent complication and may occur weeks or months after the surgery. It is known that intraocular lenses (IOL) used for the correction of post-operative hypermetropia are an adjunctive aid in the prevention of PCOs, mainly the foldable acrylics designs with square and truncated edges. However, IOL placement may result in endothelial cell loss. This study evaluated the morphology and cellularity of the endothelium by non-contact specular microscopy in aphakic and pseudophakic dogs. Endothelial cell density, endothelial cell area, coefficient of variation and hexagonal cells percent were analyzed for each group and between groups. During all evaluation periods, endothelial cell density did not alter in any group. From days 7 to 30, endothelial cell density was higher in pseudophakic dogs. However, values returned to normal and, by the end of the study, no significant difference was observed. Cell area and variation coefficient did not differ in each group or between groups. Hexagonal cells percent significantly reduced after phacoemulsification in both groups. With time, this condition returned to initial values. When both groups were compared, hexagonal cells percent were decreased in the pseudophakic group, immediately after the surgeries.

O cavalo, dado o seu meio ambiente, está sujeito a afecções frequentes da córnea e da conjuntiva, tecidos oculares bastante expostos a bactérias e fungos, principalmente Aspergillus spp. e Fusarium spp. As ceratites ulcerativas bacterianas e fúngicas, bem como as ceratites fúngicas não ulcerativas, caracterizadas principalmente pelo abscesso estromal, são frequentes nessa espécie. Ocorrida a lesão inicial, perpetua-se um ciclo vicioso, com liberação de citocinas inflamatórias, que desencadeiam uma rápida e severa infiltração corneal por células polimorfonucleares. A córnea torna-se sujeita à destruição por enzimas proteolíticas liberadas pelos micro-organismos e por células inflamatórias, capazes de desencadear a dissolução estromal e a perfuração do bulbo ocular. O tratamento clínico para a resolução da doença corneal e o controle da uveíte reflexa deve ser agressivo e associado, muitas das vezes, à terapia cirúrgica. Este artigo discorre sobre a fisiopatologia e o tratamento da ceratomicose em equinos.

Environmental and behavioral factors make horses susceptible to corneal and conjunctival lesions, since these structures are constantly exposed to bacteria and fungi specially Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp. Bacterial and fungal ulcerative keratitis, as well as non-ulcerative fungal keratitis such as stromal abscess, are frequent in horses. A "cascade" effect follows the initial lesion which triggers the release of inflammatory cytokines followed by an acute and severe infiltrate of polymorphonuclear cells in the cornea. The cornea becomes susceptible to the activity of proteolytic enzymes released by microorganisms and polymorphonuclear cells, resulting in stromal degradation and ocular perforation. The medical treatment targeting the corneal disease and the controlling of reflexive uveitis should be aggressive and surgical therapy should be associated in most of the cases. This paper reviews the pathophysiology of keratomycosis in horses and specific aspects of the treatment in this species.

Anormalidades do filme lacrimal de cães podem ser classificadas quanto ao seu aspecto quantitativo, qualitativo ou ambos, sendo comumente observada na prática cotidiana. Intercorrências na produção de um ou mais componentes do filme lacrimal ensejam distúrbios oculares em graus variados, denominados ceratoconjuntivite seca. Diversas são as causas da ceratoconjuntivite seca em cães, mas a maioria dos casos é de caráter idiopático, estando associada à participação de linfócitos T. O diagnóstico em medicina veterinária é firmado com base nos valores obtidos pelo teste da lacrimal de Schirmer. O presente artigo objetiva revisar os aspectos relacionados à etiopatogenia e ao diagnóstico da ceratoconjuntivite seca em cães, assim como discutir novas modalidades terapêuticas para a doença.

Tear film disorders in dogs can be classified into quantitative or qualitative abnormalities, or both, and are commonly observed in daily clinical practice. Inadequate production of one or more tear film components can lead to variable degrees of ocular disorders, called keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs has several causes, but in most cases the disease is idiopathic, with T lymphocytes playing a role. In veterinary medicine, the diagnosis is made based on the results of the Schirmer tear test. In this article, we review aspects related to the etiopathogenesis and diagnosis of keratoconjunctivitis sicca in dogs and discuss new therapeutic modalities for this disease.

Mioplastias da musculatura extra-ocular podem ensejar aderências entre o músculo operado e os tecidos adjacentes, produzindo, não raro, estrabismos cicatriciais. Com intuito de se minimizar a ocorrência de aderências, investigaram-se os efeitos da mitomicina C, como agente antifibrótico, em concentrações ascendentes de 0,008, 0,02 e 0,04%, aplicada no per-operatório de mioplastias do reto superior do bulbo do olho de coelhos. Operaram-se 56 animais, que compuseram cinco grupos. No pós-operatório, instituíram-se limpeza com solução fisiológica das áreas operadas e profilaxia antimicrobiana e antiinflamatória, na forma de colírio. Avaliações clínica, histológica e imunoistoquímica, em que se estudou o fator de crescimento fibroblástico-básico (FGF-2), e estatística compuseram os métodos de análise dos resultados. Encontraram-se, clinicamente, mais aderências nos olhos-controle, comparativamente aos tratados, embora sem diferença estatística (P>0,05). À histologia, verificou-se que a mitomicina C ensejou retardo da cicatrização junto às áreas das mioplastias, notadamente no grupo que a recebeu, à concentração de 0,02%. A imunoistoquímica revelou marcação do FGF-2 em fibroblastos e macrófagos indistintamente entre os grupos. Com base nos resultados, permite-se admitir que a mitomicina C, nas concentrações em que foi empregada, retardou a cicatrização e, por conseguinte, o estrabismo secundário, sem ensejar efeitos colaterais.

Myoplasties of the extraocular muscle may cause adhesions between the operated muscle and the adjacent tissues, commonly generating cicatricial strabismus. With the purpose of reducing to a minimum the occurrence of adhesion, the effects of mitomycin C, an antifibrotic agent, were studied in concentrations of 0.008%, 0.02%, and 0.04% applied during intraoperative of myoplasties of the superior rectus muscle of rabbits. Fifty six animals were divided in five groups. During the postoperative, the operated areas were washed with physiological solution. Eye drop instillation to prevent inflammation and bacterial infection were used. The method to analyze the results consisted of clinical and histological evaluation and statistical analyzes. We also evaluated at the same time the amount of basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2) by immunohistochemical study. Clinically, more adhesions were found in the eyes of the control group than in the groups of treated eyes. However there was no significant statistics difference between the two groups (P>0.05). Histologically, mitomycin C caused a delayed cicatrization in the mioplastic areas, specially in the group who received the 0.02% concentration. The immunohistochemical showed FGF-2 marking in fibroblasts and macrophages, but between the groups there wasn't no difference. Based on those results, mitomycin C in the utilized concentrations was capable of delaying the cicatrization and consequently avoid the secondary strabismus without undesirable side effects.

O glaucoma mantém-se como uma das principais causas de cegueira em pacientes humanos e entre os animais domésticos. No curso da sua patogênese, ocorre aumento da pressão intra-ocular e morte de células retinianas, cujo início pode ser precoce. Fármacos vêm sendo desenvolvidos visando a se obter o controle da pressão intra-ocular e a proteger as células retinianas da apoptose e morte. O presente artigo revisa a farmacologia, as indicações e os efeitos adversos das principais substâncias utilizadas topicamente no tratamento do glaucoma em cães, além de discutir as técnicas cirúrgicas contemporâneas que passam melhor se adequar ao seu controle.

Glaucoma remains a leading cause of blindness in human and domestic animals. On the curse of its pathogenesis increase on intraocular pressure may onset precocious retinal cell death. New agents have been developed in attempt to control intraocular pressure and protect retinal cell from apoptosis and death. The present article reviews the pharmacology, the indications and side effects of the most commonly agents used topically for the treatment of glaucoma in dogs. In addition, approaches contemporaneous surgical techniques that better reach the control of the condition.

O glaucoma é uma doença grave que acomete humanos e animais, levando à degeneração de estruturas nervosas e à perda progressiva da visão. Vários eventos estão relacionados à fisiopatologia do glaucoma, como o aumento da pressão intra-ocular, o aumento nos níveis de glutamato intra-celular e a diminuição do fluxo axoplasmático. Fármacos recentemente disponíveis no mercado, aliados às novas técnicas cirúrgicas, suscitam perspectivas mais eficazes para o controle do glaucoma e aq preservação da visão.

The glaucoma is a serious disease that affects humans as well as animals, leading to ocular nervous structures degeneration and progressive blindness. There are many events related to the glaucoma’s pathophysiology as the intraocular pressure increase, intracellular glutamate high levels and axoplasmic flow decreasing. Drugs recently available associated to the newcomer surgery techniques are suggested to be the most efficient strategy in the glaucoma’s control and vision maintenance.
