Abstract This research aimed to produce and evaluate particleboard with pinus waste using two production methodologies. One applied to homogeneous panels (single layer) and another to heterogeneous panels (three layers). The panels were produced with an initial density of 0.550 g/cm³, with 10% polyurethane resin derived from castor oil (PUR) for the homogeneous panels and 12% for the heterogeneous ones. The pressing parameters were 5 MPa, with a temperature of 100 ºC and 10 min of pressing, with an interval of 30 s. The tests performed according to NBR 14810-2 (ABNT, 2018) standard. Resumo Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo produzir e avaliar painéis aglomerados com resíduo de pinus medianteuma metodologia de produçãoaplicada para painéis homogêneos e outra para heterogêneos. Os painéis homogêneos e heterogêneos foram produzidos com densidade inicial de 0,550 g/cm³ e com 10% e 12% de resina de poliuretano derivado do óleo de mamona (PUR) respectivamente. Os parâmetros de prensagem foram de 5 MPa, com temperatura de 100 ºC e 10 min de prensagem, com um intervalo de 30 s. Os ensaios realizados seguiram a normativa NBR 14810-2 (ABNT, 2018). Resumo Plantas nativas do Cerrado geralmente apresentam características peculiares que permitem tolerar o estresse hídrico e nutricional. Astronium fraxinifolium, é uma das espécies arbóreas de Anacardiaceae do Cerrado brasileiro. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi caracterizar morfofisiologicamente as folhas de A. fraxinifolium, com o objetivo de reconhecer características relacionadas a aclimatação da espécie em diferentes condições de solo. Para tanto, duas populações de A. fraxinifolium foram amostradas em diferentes áreas de estudo, A1 (Solo degradado) e A2 (“Solo não degradado”). A partir dessas amostras foram quantificados compostos nitrogenados, carboidratos totais, amido, clorofila, conteúdo nutricional, densidade estomática, trocas gasosas, alocação de carbono e altura da parte aérea, comparando as áreas de estudo. Um número elevado de estômatos foi observado na superfície abaxial das folhas de A. fraxinifolium, com uma densidade estomática mais elevada ocorrendo em indivíduos de A1. Já os valores de clorofila a, b e total foram significativamente maiores em A2. O conteúdo nutricional não diferiu entre as áreas, exceto o boro, que apresenta maior concentração nas plantas de A2. É possível que a menor concentração de boro nas plantas A1 esteja relacionado a produção de clorofila. Em relação às demais análises, não houve diferenças significativas entre as áreas. Os resultados mostram que esta espécie sofre alterações na produção de clorofila, mas a fotossíntese líquida não é perturbada, sendo o baixo teor de clorofila em A1 compensado pela maior densidade estomática. Assim, essas mudanças podem ser o resultado da aclimatação dessa espécie às diferentes condições ambientais às quais está exposta.

Abstract Plants native from Cerrado generally have peculiar characteristics that allow tolerating water and nutritional stress. Astronium fraxinifolium is a Anacardiaceae tree of from Brazilian Cerrado. The aim of this research was to characterize A. fraxinifolium leaves morphophysiologically, in order to recognize characteristics related to acclimatization of the species in different soil conditions. Two populations of A. fraxinifolium were sampled in different study areas, A1 (Degraded Soil) and A2 (“Undegraded Soil”). Nitrogen compounds, total carbohydrates, chlorophyll, nutritional content, stomatal density and gas exchanges were quantified, comparing the areas. A high number of stomata was observed on the abaxial surface of A. fraxinifolium leaves, with a higher density occurring in A1 individuals. The values of chlorophyll and boron content were significantly higher in A2 plants. It’s possible that the lowest concentration of boron in A1 plants is related to chlorophyll production. Regardinf the other analysis, there weren’t significant differences between the areas. The results show that this species undergoes changes in production of chlorophyll, but liquid photosynthesis isn’t impaired, considering the low chlorophyll content in A1 being compensated by the higher stomatal density. Thus, these changes may be the result of acclimating this species to different environmental conditions to which it’s exposed.

ABSTRACT The Lauraceae family is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical climates, has more than 2500 species and in the taxonomic point of view, it is one of the most difficult families to identify species. The aim of this study was to analyze the leaf anatomy of three species of Lauraceae (Ocotea indecora (Schott) Mez, Nectandra barbellata Coe-Teix. and Endlicheria paniculata (Spreng.) J.F.Macbr.) and identify the chemical profile of essential oil extracted from the leaves by hydrodistillation method. The leaves of the three species were obtained in “Parque Estadual Intervales”, Atlantic Forest, São Paulo state, Brazil. Samples of leaves were fixed, dehydrated, embedded in synthetic resin and sectioned for mounting histological slides for anatomical description of leaf tissues. The essential oil extracted by hydrodistillation method from dried leaves was analyzed by gas chromatography to establish its chemical profile. The leaves are hypostomatic, the epidermis in E. paniculata and N. barbellata present regular cells walls and irregular cells walls in O. indecora in both sides of epidermis. The three species present a dorsiventral mesophyll. Histochemical analyses presented lipid substances in secretory cavity and cuticle; starch, phenolic compounds and mucilage were observed in parenchyma cells of midrib and mesophyll. Ultra structural analyses demonstrated that trichomes in the species E. paniculata and O. indecora are shown only on the abaxial leaf face and species N. barbellata presented trichomes on both sides of the epidermis (abaxial and adaxial). Ocotea indecora essential oil revealed as main compound the bicyclogermacrene and N. barbellata the δ-cadinene. The species showed different morphological characters and different compounds of the essential oil, being these data useful for the differentiation of the species.

Fire plays an important role in several grassland ecosystems in the world. Fire can trigger germination in several species, by breaking the physical dormancy of their seeds. Thus, we hypothesized that exposure to high temperatures during fire would break seed dormancy and enhance germination. We tested the effect of high temperatures on the germination of six species of legumes from Brazilian subtropical grasslands. We used heat shock experiments with the following treatments: 60, 90, 120 and 150ºC for one minute. Seeds were then placed to germinate for 60 days in 12/12 hours light/dark and 20/30ºC. Germination was generally low for all study species. Most species was not affected by heat shock treatments. However, Stylosanthes montevidensis was the only species that had its physical dormancy broken when exposed to 120ºC. The seeds of all the other species were neither stimulated nor killed by high temperatures. Although the exposure to high temperatures did not affect the germination of the study species (except for one), it also did not kill seeds, thereby showing that seeds are resistant to fire. Therefore, the rapid passage of fire in these grasslands is not sufficient to break the dormancy of most of the studied species of legumes.

As espécies do gênero Smilax L., conhecidas popularmente como salsaparrilha, são empregadas na medicina popular como fortificante contra o reumatismo e antissifilítico desde o século XVI, porém até hoje as suas raízes são exploradas de maneira extrativista. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a propagação de Smilax fluminensis visando a auxiliar no atendimento da demanda e apontar propostas para o seu manejo sustentável. Foram analisados a porcentagem de germinação de sementes, o enraizamento de estacas de ramos aéreos e subterrâneos e o acompanhamento ao longo de um ano da capacidade de rebrotamento das plantas após a retirada dos ramos aéreos. As sementes foram submetidas às temperaturas: 25, 30, 20-30 e 20-35°C, sob fotoperíodo diário de oito horas e na ausência de luz. Para o enraizamento de estacas, foram utilizados ramos aéreos e subterrâneos com aproximadamente 20cm com duas regiões nodais submetidas ao tratamento com água destilada (controle) e com ácido indolbutírico (AIB) a 100ppm. As melhores porcentagens de germinação obtidas para S. fluminensis, 80% em 20-30°C no claro e 85% a 30°C no escuro. Apenas as estacas de ramos subterrâneos enraizaram, houve diferença significativa em relação à massa fresca e seca de raízes com valores maiores nos tratamentos com hormônio em relação ao controle.

Smilax L. species, popularly known in Brazil as salsaparrilha, have been used in folk medicine as tonic against rheumatism and as anti-syphilitic since the sixteenth century; however, until today, their roots have been explored in an extractive way. The aim of this study was to analyze the propagation of Smilax fluminensis aiming to meet the demand and to propose procedures for its sustainable management. It was analyzed the percentage of seed germination, rooting of aerial and subterranean stem cuttings and plant resprouting capacity after removal of the shoots. The monitoring lasted one year. Seeds were subjected to temperatures: 25°C, 30°C, 20-30°C and 20-35°C under a daily photoperiod of eight hours and in the absence of light. For rooting the stem cuttings, aerial and subterranean stems about 20cm long with two nodal regions were subjected to treatment with distilled water (control) and indolbutyric acid (IBA) at 100ppm. The best germination percentages obtained for S. fluminensis were 80% at 20-30°C under light and 85% at 30°C in the dark. Only subterranean stem cuttings showed significant difference concerning fresh and dry matter of roots with higher values in treatments with hormone compared to the control.

As espécies de Smilax L. são utilizadas na medicina popular brasileira desde o século 19 devido às propriedades anti-reumáticas atribuídas aos órgãos subterrâneos de todas as espécies. No entanto, ainda hoje, essas espécies são exploradas apenas por extrativismo. Estudos sobre a germinação e o desenvolvimento dos órgãos subterrâneos podem ser úteis para preservar essas plantas. Após a germinação, o desenvolvimento de plântulas de Smilax polyantha foi analisado para compreender a formação do sistema subterrâneo. Para a análise da ontogênese do sistema subterrâneo foram seccionadas plantas em diferentes estágios de desenvolvimento entre um e doze meses. Uma das características mais marcantes desta espécie é a presença de dois sistemas de ramificação caulinar. A plúmula dá origem ao primeiro sistema caulinar de ramificações com geotropismo negativo. As gemas axilares subterrâneas desse primeiro eixo caulinar originam o segundo eixo caulinar com geotropismo positivo. O crescimento horizontal e o espessamento do órgão subterrâneo dependem do desenvolvimento de gemas axilares de nós basais dos ramos anteriores. A gema cotiledonar não participa da formação do caule subterrâneo, como descrito anteriormente na literatura para este gênero, mas as gemas axilares basais dos ramos caulinares aéreos originam o segundo eixo de ramificação caulinar subterrâneo. Neste estudo, após ser discutida a terminologia mais adequada, sugere-se chamar o caule subterrâneo dessas espécies de rizóforo.

Brazilians have been using the underground organs of Smilax species in alternative medicine since the 19th century because of their anti-rheumatic qualities. However, even nowadays, these species are explored only by extractivism. Studies on seed germination and development of these organs could be useful to preserve these plants. After germination, seedling development of Smilax polyantha was analyzed to understand underground stem formation. Furthermore, to analyze the ontogenesis of the underground system, seedlings aged from one to twelve months were sectioned. One of the most striking features of this species is the presence of two stem branching systems. The plumule gives rise to the first stem branching system with negative geotropism. Its first underground axillary bud sprouted into the other caulinar axis with positive geotropism. The horizontal growth and the subsequent thickening of this underground organ depended on the development of axillary buds from basal nodes of the previous branches. The cotyledonary bud did not play a role in the underground formation, as previously described in the literature for this genus, but the buds of the basal cataphylls built the second stem branching system. In this study we discuss the terminology and suggest calling this second stem branching system a rhizophore.

Smilax polyantha Griseb., conhecida como salsaparrilha, é uma espécie reconhecida como medicinal, encontrada em áreas de cerrado, especialmente na região Sudeste. O objetivo desse estudo foi descrever a morfoanatomia dos órgãos vegetativos de Smilax polyantha e verificar se os caracteres descritos na Farmacopéia Brasileira de fato permitem diferenciar esta das demais espécies denominadas salsaparrilha. Amostras dos órgãos vegetativos foram preparadas segundo técnicas usuais em microscopia de luz e eletrônica de varredura. A folha é hipoestomática e os estômatos são paracíticos. O mesofilo tende a dorsiventral, pois o parênquima adaxial é constituído por células com sinuosidades pronunciadas. O pecíolo é canaliculado, sulcado na porção abaxial, indicando torção foliar. O ramo caulinar foi estudado na porção aérea e subterrânea diferindo apenas pelo espessamento da parede das células do parênquima vascular. O rizóforo é revestido pelo córtex; entre o córtex e o cilindro vascular há o meristema de espessamento secundário; o cilindro vascular é constituído de feixes colaterais cercados por células parenquimáticas com espessamento parietal secundário. O sistema radicular adventício fibroso possui raízes brancas tenras, revestidas pela epiderme e raízes marrons rígidas revestidas pelo córtex interno esclerificado, já que a epiderme e córtex externo são eliminados ao longo do desenvolvimento. Visto que as espécies brasileiras de salsaparrilha indicadas como medicinais na Farmacopéia Brasileira são identificadas através do modo como as raízes são amarradas em feixes, do diâmetro da raiz e da sua coloração, as análises nas raízes de S. polyantha mostraram que esses parâmetros são insuficientes para diferenciar as espécies do gênero Smilax.

Smilax polyantha Griseb., known as salsaparrilha, is a medicinal plant, occurring in the "cerrado", in the Southeast region in Brazil. The objective of this study was to describe the morphoanatomy of the vegetative organs of Smilax polyantha and to verify whether the characters described in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia allow to differentiate between salsaparrilha species. Samples of the vegetative organs were prepared following usual techniques using light and scanning electron microscopy. The leaf is hypostomatic and the stomata are paracytic. Mesophyll tends to dorsiventral, as the three parenchyma layers near the adaxial surface are constituted by sinuous cells. Petiole is canaliculated in the adaxial face, and striated in the abaxial face, indicating leaf twist. The stem branch was studied in the aerial and underground portion differing only by the thickening degree of vascular parenchyma cell walls. The rhizophore coat is made by cortical parenchyma; between the cortex and the vascular cylinder there is a secondary thickening meristem; the vascular cylinder has collateral bundles surrounded by parenchyma cells with thick secondary walls. The adventitious radicular system possesses white fresh roots, covered by epidermis, with large cortex, and rigid brown roots, covered by the sclerenchymatous cells of inner cortex, because the epidermis and outer cortex are eliminated along the development. The S. polyantha root analysis had shown that the parameters described in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, which are based on the way the roots are tied in bundles, the diameter, and colour of the roots, are insufficient to differentiate the Smilax species.
