Lipases have been used in industrial processes as biocatalysts for transesterification reactions. The synergism between enzymes and magnetic properties may be reached by using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) as support to immobilize them in aggregate structures, denominated by magnetic crosslinked enzyme aggregates (MCLEA). One of the advantages of such supports is the possibility of using magnetic separation for enzyme recovery, reducing costs and allowing reuse in continuous systems. Here, porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) was immobilized onto functionalized magnetite support (Fe3O4-APTS) with a protein binding efficiency of 78.84%. Physical and chemical properties of the nanoparticles and immobilized lipase were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XDR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, vibrating sample magnetometer measurements (VSM), and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The immobilized lipase additionally exhibited improved stability across wide pH and temperature ranges compared with free lipase. The immobilized derivate also attained good reusability, maintaining 61.37% of its initial activity after 6 reaction cycles. Through magnetic behavior and also because of its surface modification to crosslinking the enzyme, the MCLEA produced in this work has enhanced the biocatalytic activities of PPL.

Abstract Phylogenies are essential for organizing knowledge on biological diversity, structuring classifications, and providing insights into evolutionary events. Worldwide phylogenetic studies on mollusks emerged in the late 1980s, while in Brazil, phylogenetic analyses of mollusks started around 2000. For unknown reasons, phylogenies of lower hierarchical taxa, such as subfamilies, tribes, and genera, are not common in Malacology. Here, we analyzed articles published by malacologists and evaluated the proportion of alpha taxonomic reviews compared to phylogenetic systematic studies conducted at Brazilian institutions and worldwide. Our searches were performed using the Web of Science and Lattes Platform databases for Brazilian studies. We found 537 systematic/taxonomic papers, of which 11% included an explicit phylogenetic analysis. Additionally, 31 of these studies described a new genus or higher taxon, but only seven included phylogenetic inferences to support taxonomic decisions. The remaining 24 studies relied on alpha taxonomic classification, focusing primarily on conchological features of group-related units. We observed that publications worldwide describing higher taxa based on phylogenetic systematics began in the 1970s, with their proportion increasing over the years. The few phylogenetic analyses published after Willi Hennig’s cladistics suggest that malacologists at Brazilian institutions have not established a tradition of Phylogenetic Systematics for studies on molluscan diversity.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract Conservation units are specially protected territorial spaces whose primary goals are to preserve biodiversity and natural resources. Thus, this paper aims to investigate the spatial-temporal dynamics of land-use and land-cover classes and hotspots in a conservation unit in the Caatinga region. We assessed land-use and land-cover classes based on Mapbiomas’s data from 2002 to 2021. Then, we analyzed the hot spots made available by Programa Queimadas database, for the rainy and dry seasons, as well as data recorded on a yearly basis between 2002 and 2021. The class of agricultural activities in the buffer zone has increased; changes in the hotspots’ distribution pattern were observed, such as displacement from the Park’s central area towards the buffer zone’s. Furthermore, 12 hotspots tended to increase in the dry season, over the 20-year assessment process. Insights into the growth of agriculture and changing hotspot patterns assist in creating more effective conservation strategies.

ABSTRACT The expression ‘you need to know to conserve’ is a well-known cliche among biologists. Documenting the richness of a group of organisms is the first step towards understanding biodiversity and preparing efficient conservation plans. In this context, many efforts have been made to quantify the number of species on Earth and estimate the number of species still unknown to science. A few countries have complete and integrated databases estimating the approximate number of species recorded for their territory, particularly in the Global South. In Brazil, a country of continental dimensions, revealing the richness of the second most diverse clade of invertebrates (=Mollusca) has been a goal of taxonomists. Recently, in an unprecedented, collective, and integrated effort among Brazilian malacologists, it was possible to estimate how many valid species of molluscs are there in Brazil. In this effort, more than 30 mollusc experts joined together to update the Taxonomic Catalogue of the Brazilian Fauna (TCBF), a governmental website that allows a quick and real-time updating of all Metazoan. So far, more than 5,000 updates have been made in TCBF, indicating the presence of 3,552 valid species of molluscs in Brazil, distributed among the main clades as follows: Caudofoveata (10 spp.), Solenogastres (6 spp.), Polyplacophora (35 spp.), Scaphopoda (43 spp.), Cephalopoda (92 spp.), Bivalvia (629 spp.) and Gastropoda (2,737 spp.). The present study, in addition to demonstrating for the first time the richness of Brazilian molluscs, also presents the state of the art of this important phylum of invertebrates highlighting its most representative and neglected groups.

The article analyzes the tensions and impacts on the pedagogical practice of Physical Education teachers from seven schools with good performance in National Secondary Education Examination (Enem), after inserting this curricular component in the exam. With a qualitative character, it is an exploratory research that takes the narratives of seven high school Physical Education teachers, linked to the Department of Education of the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. The results show that teachers, despite being part of the same teaching network, have different ways of doing their pedagogical practice, according to the demands of each school unit, aiming at preparing students with the skills and competences required by Enem. It concludes that Enem brought new demands to schools, resulting in didactic-methodological strategies discussed in collective planning. At the same time, the entry of Physical Education in this exam has generated responsibilities for teachers to prepare students, prepare questions for the Enem simulations and ensure their integration with other curricular components.

Abstract The surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is very reactive and can oxidize to γ-Fe2O3 (maghemite) and α-Fe2O3 (hematite) structures. Based on this, the oxidation process of Fe3O4 nanoparticles must be prevented, and one of the strategies is surface functionalization with organic or inorganic molecules. Thus, this study analyzed the thermal behavior of Fe3O4 and Fe3O4-EDTA nanoparticles using X-ray diffraction (XRD), simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results showed that γ- Fe2O3 was obtained as an intermediate in Fe3O4 and Fe3O4-EDTA decomposition, as confirmed by TG-DTA and DSC curves. Moreover, Fe3O4-EDTA exhibited a temperature peak (Tp = 573.5°C) of phase transformation (γ-Fe2O3 → α-Fe2O3) higher than that of Fe3O4 (Tp = 533.0°C), confirming that EDTA molecules stabilized the nanoparticles efficiently. The kinetic behavior of samples changed, and the activation energy for functionalized samples decreased.

The use of selective barriers as resorbable membranes has become a routine clinical procedure for guided bone regeneration. Therefore, the production of membranes with a low inflammatory potential during their resorption process has become the goal of a considerable number of researches. Aim The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of poly (L- lactic acid) (PLLA) and biocelulose membranes (BC) inserted in the subcutaneous tissue on the dorsum of rats. Methods Fifteen animals underwent surgical procedures for the insertion of 4 types of membranes: COL (Collagen membrane) – Control Group; BC (Biocellulose membrane); BCAg (Biocellulose membrane impregnated with Silver); PLLA (Poly (L-lactic acid) membrane). All membrane types were inserted into each animal. Animals were euthanized after 3, 7, and 15 days of the surgical procedure. Descriptive histological analyses were carried out to investigate host tissue reaction to membrane presence by assessing the anti-inflammatory process composition associated with the membrane resorption and the presence of foreign-body reaction or encapsulation. Results The BC membranes showed a higher degree of inflammation and poor pattern of integration with the surrounding tissues than the PLLA and COL membranes. Conclusion The PLLA and COL membranes present better biocompatibility than the BC membranes.

Objective: Positive psychology interventions (PPIs) incorporate principles of personal strengths with the view that mental health recovery transcends symptom relief. Severe psychiatric conditions, such as schizophrenia, may benefit from such interventions. This study aims to gather the current evidence on the impact of PPIs on increasing well-being in patients on the schizophrenia spectrum and assess reductions in negative or positive symptoms. Methods: A systematic review of PPI studies with schizophrenia-spectrum patients was carried out following PRISMA recommendations. The PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched for relevant publications in order to understand the possible effects of these interventions on well-being measures and psychotic symptoms in this population. Results: Nine studies (four controlled) were included. Meta-analysis of the controlled studies showed a significant effect (p = 0.04) for improvement of well-being (Z = 2.01). Overall, the reviewed evidence suggests well-being improvement. The effect on reduction of negative symptoms was unclear. Conclusion: Used as an adjunctive therapy, PPIs appear to be a promising resource for patients on the schizophrenia spectrum, with possible effects on well-being and symptom reduction.

ABSTRACT In recent years there has been a growing interest in the use of various agro-industrial wastes. In Brazil, the food industries accumulate an enormous amount of waste, especially those that process citrus fruits. Among the possibilities for valuing these residues, anaerobic digestion is a promising alternative in the generation of renewable energy and pollution control. In this sense, this study evaluated the anaerobic digestion of citrus wastewater, aiming at the biological production of hydrogen from three inocula: (1) Clostridium Acetobutylicum ATCC 824, (2) Clostridium Beijerinckii ATCC 10132 and (3) anaerobic consortium obtained from citrus wastewater. The experiment was carried out in 51h, in triplicates of anaerobic batch reactors, fed with 2 different carbon sources: glucose (10.7 g COD L-1) and citrus wastewater (10.0 g COD L-1), headspace filled with N2 (99.99%), initial pH 7.0 and maintained at 37 ° C, under static mode. In the reactors fed with glucose, hydrogen generation was verified only with the inocula 1 and 2, which were, respectively, 36.8 mmol L-1 and 64.1 mmol L-1. In the reactors operated with citrus wastewater, were obtained 21.2; 15.7 e; 37.6 mmol H2 L-1 with inocula 1; 2 and 3, respectively. In addition, expressive generations of ethanol were verified for all inocula tested in the reactors fed with glucose. In the characterization of the citrus anaerobic consortium, a predominance of Gram + bacilli was verified and the genera of anaerobic H2-generating bacteria (UFC mL-1) were quantified: Clostridium sp. (3x105), Bacteroides sp. (4x105), Lactobacillus sp. (4x105), Streptococcus sp. (5x104), and Veillonella sp. (3x105), revealing a high diversity of anaerobic hydrogen-producing bacteria present in agro-industrial wastewater. Such results emphasize that the generation of hydrogen can occur in different metabolic pathways with consequent favor in the generation of biofuels such as ethanol or butanol.

ABSTRACT The biodiesel production has grown and it gained prominence in the global energy scenario. As a result, its main co-product, crude glycerol (CG), has accompanied this increase, causing the formation of large stocks of this residue. A promising alternative for its reduction is the use by anaerobic biological processes aiming at the biogas production, as hydrogen (H2) as methane (CH4). It is known that the efficiency of this bioconversion increases through co-digestion with other organic waste. Thus, the objective of this study consisted in the co-digestion of CG, from the biodiesel production through waste cooking oils, with citrus vinasse (CV), in two sequential stages. In the 1st stage (Assay 1), the anaerobic reactor was operated in batch, fed with 5 g COD L-1 CG and 5 g COD L-1 CV, in the presence of a mixed culture belonging to the genus Clostridium sp., at 37 °C, pH 5.5, headspace with N2, generating 4.48 mmol H2 L-1 in 112 h of experiment, being consumed 93.19 % of CG and 74.00 % of glucose. A control assay (Control 1) was assembled with only 5 g COD L-1 CG, without H2 production. The effluent generated in Assay 1 (200 mL) was used as a substrate in the 2nd stage (Assay 2) by an inoculum in natura identified by a consortium of anaerobic bacteria and methanogenic archaea, in the anaerobic methanogenic reactor (500 mL), headspace with N2, pH 7.0, at 37 °C, generating 229.08 mmol CH4 L-1 in 624 h of operation. In addition, 87.34 % of COD and 93.75 % of methanol from CG were consumed. The effluent generated by Control 1 produced only 40.58 mmol CH4 L-1 (Control 2). Thus, it was found that co-digestion increased the biogas generation, with consumption of organic and toxic waste present in CG through integrated systems.
