Resumo O sucesso na implantação de muitas das práticas lean depende da existência de uma estabilidade produtiva básica. Por sua vez, um dos meios de se obter estabilidade é através de rotinas padronizadas para a solução das anormalidades, como as das cadeias de ajuda. O objetivo deste trabalho é propor diretrizes para o projeto e operação de cadeias de ajuda, tratando de questões como a definição de quais eventos necessitam do suporte da cadeia e a seleção dos membros que devem ser envolvidos. As diretrizes propostas envolvem sete passos: (i) delimitação e avaliação do local de aplicação; (ii) identificação e classificação das anormalidades; (iii) identificação dos tipos e conteúdos dos dispositivos visuais; (iv) identificação dos agentes envolvidos na cadeia de ajuda; (v) definição da lógica de operação da cadeia de ajuda; (vi) treinamento e capacitação; e (vii) aplicação e avaliação de resultados. Uma aplicação parcial em uma indústria gráfica ilustra o uso das diretrizes, servindo de base para a discussão de seus pontos fortes e fracos.

Abstract Lean production aims at operational improvement by the elimination of waste and variability reduction. The lean practice known as help chain, which contributes to the lean goals is an underexplored topic. Thus, the objective of this paper is to propose guidelines regarding the help chain design and operation by addressing issues related to the definition of the events that need support from the chain and selection of the members to be involved. The proposed guidelines involve seven steps: (i) delimitation and evaluation of the scenario of application; (ii) identification and classification of abnormalities; (iii) identification of the types and contents of visual devices; (iv) identification of agents involved in the help chain; (v) definition of the operating logic of the help chain; (vi) training and qualification; and (vii) application and evaluation of the results. A partial application in the printing department of a tobacco’s manufacturer plant is a basis for discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the guidelines.

Resumo O baixo índice de sucesso e as mudanças estruturais e organizacionais necessárias para a Implantação da Produção Enxuta (IPE) indicam a necessidade do uso da abordagem de Gestão de Riscos (GR) para gerenciar esta transformação. Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar um modelo gráfico para explicitar as relações entre os riscos na IPE por meio da utilização da Interpretative Structural Modelling em uma empresa e entender os motivos destas relações. O estudo está baseado em um caso conduzido na unidade de uma empresa global fabricante de componentes hidráulicos. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de múltiplas fontes de evidência, como entrevistas, observações, visitas à fábrica e análise de documentos. O modelo desenvolvido propiciou o esclarecimento e entendimento dos efeitos diretos e indiretos da presença dos riscos na IPE na empresa. As principais relações identificadas no modelo foram confirmadas por meio das explicações dos motivos pelos quais tais relações ocorriam no caso.

Abstract The low success rate and the complex structural and organizational changes required for lean production implementation (LPI) require the use of the risk management approach to manage this transformation. This paper aims to present a graphical model to explain the relationships between the risks in LPI through interpretive structural modeling (ISM) and to understand the reasons behind such relationships. The case study was conducted in a factory of a global company that manufactures hydraulic components. Data were collected from multiple sources, including interviews, observations, visits to the plant, and document analysis. The research contributed to clarifying and understanding the direct and indirect influences of risks that hinder the LPI at the plant. The main relationships identified in the model were confirmed by explanations of reasons for such relationships occurred in the case.

Abstract Paper aims This paper aims to understand the relationship between Information & Communication Technology (ICT), collaborative New Product Development (NPD) and customer satisfaction (NPD performance). Originality We target the relationship between ICT, collaborative NPD and NPD performance. ICT is assessed as a set of specific tools adopted by the companies. Research method We test the mediating role of collaborative practices in the effect of ICT tools on customer satisfaction (as NPD performance) by means of a survey of 105 Brazilian firms. Main findings Collaboration with customers and suppliers has an important role for customer satisfaction and the use of ICT has significant effect on NPD performance through the mediating role of collaborative practices. Implications for theory and practice Implementing only ICT tools is not enough to achieve higher level of success in NPD. Managers should first strength the relationship between stakeholders and then adopt ICT tools to support the cooperation.

Resumo O processo de implantação de sistemas de produção enxuta é complexo, demorado e sujeito a uma série de riscos. Este artigo tem como objetivo identificar e classificar os riscos presentes na implantação da produção enxuta (IPE). As quatro etapas da pesquisa foram: (i) revisão de literatura para identificação de riscos à IPE; (ii) desenvolvimento e aplicação de um questionário a 57 respondentes, que avaliou as percepções acerca da probabilidade de ocorrência e impacto de cada risco apontado pela literatura; (iii) análise dos resultados do questionário, que permitiu a classificação dos riscos por meio de uma análise fatorial exploratória; (iv) estudo de caso para aprofundar a compreensão das relações entre os riscos em uma empresa na qual trabalhavam três respondentes dasurvey. Quatorze riscos à IPE foram identificados e classificados em três grupos: (i) riscos associados ao papel das áreas de apoio; (ii) riscos associados ao papel da alta e média gerência; e (iii) riscos associados ao papel dos níveis operacionais. Uma vez que os riscos dentro de cada grupo são fortemente inter-relacionados, essa classificação pode contribuir para o planejamento e implantação de ações de controle destes.

Abstract The process of implementing lean production (LP) is complex, slow, and subject to several risks. This article aims at identifying and classifying the risks involved in the LP implementation process. The study was undertaken in four stages: (i) a literature review to identify the risks; (ii) the design and application of a questionnaire, answered by 57 respondents, to assess their perceptions on the probability of occurrence and impact of the risks identified from the literature review; (iii) analysis of the results of the questionnaire, which allowed for classification of the risks based on an exploratory factor analysis; and (iv) a case study, to gain an understanding of the relationships among the risks, performed at a company for which three respondents of the survey worked. Fourteen risks were identified and then classified in three groups: (i) risks associated with the role of support areas; (ii) risks associated with the roles of the top management and middle management; and (iii) risks associated with the role of the operational level. Because the risks within each group are strongly interrelated, this classification can contribute to improving the lean implementation strategies by managing the risks.

Este artigo apresenta um levantamento do processo de implantação da Produção Enxuta (PE) em 47 empresas do Brasil e do exterior. Entre os principais resultados, o levantamento revelou que: os temas de maior interesse em ampliar conhecimentos são a cultura organizacional enxuta e o mapeamento do fluxo de valor; os principais motivos para adotar a PE são a necessidade de melhorar a competitividade e a adequação da PE ao combate de problemas críticos da produção; as principais dificuldades na implantação da PE são a resistência das pessoas e a dificuldade na adaptação de conceitos e práticas; as práticas mais utilizadas são a padronização do trabalho e o gerenciamento visual; a produção puxada é a prática prioritária no momento. Os resultados deste levantamento, aliados a observações realizadas durante visitas em algumas das empresas, permitiram a identificação de necessidades e oportunidades para pesquisas sobre a implantação da PE, as quais são sumarizadas no final do artigo.

This paper presents a survey on the lean production (LP) implementation process in 47 Brazilian and foreign companies. Among the main results, the survey pointed out that the respondents are mostly interested in learning about lean organizational culture and value stream mapping. The main drivers for adopting LP are improving competitiveness and the fact that LP is adequate to solve critical production problems. People resistance to changes and difficulties to adapt concepts and practices are the main difficulties during LP implementation. The most frequently used practices are work standardization and visual management. Pull production implementation is the practice of highest priority. The results of this survey, along with the observation data collected during visits to some of the investigated companies, permitted the identification of research opportunities on LP implementation, which are summarized at the end of this article.
