RESUMO Esta pesquisa visa avaliar os efeitos da presença de obstáculos na hidrodinâmica das correntes de turbidez. Nove simulações físicas de uma mistura mal selecionada de água e carvão (Cvol = 5%; D50 = 47 μm) foram executadas em um canal de acrílico medindo 4.00 x 0.49 x 0.24 m. Foram utilizadas três vazões de injeção (5, 10 e 25 L.min-1) em três configurações topográficas diferentes: canal sem obstáculos, canal com três obstáculos de 3 cm de altura e canal com três obstáculos de 6 cm de altura. Os resultados mostraram que quanto maior a altura dos obstáculos, maior o bloqueio do escoamento, causando alterações nos perfis verticais da forma, da velocidade, do regime de escoamento (supercrítico para subcrítico), da geometria e da zona de recirculação entre os obstáculos. A redução da altura em 50% (3 cm) indica que a corrente de turbidez desenvolveu um comportamento semelhante à condição sem obstáculos. Após ultrapassar a sequência de obstáculos, o escoamento tende a regenerar sua própria estrutura hidrodinâmica da mesma forma que a condição imediatamente anterior aos obstáculos.

ABSTRACT This research aims to evaluate the effects of the presence of obstacles on turbidity currents hydrodynamics. Nine physical simulations of a poorly sorted mixture of water and coal (Cvol = 5%; D50 = 47 μm) were run in a laboratory test channel with three flow discharges (5, 10 and 15 L.min-1) in three different topographic configurations: runs without obstacles; runs with three 3 cm-high obstacles and runs with three 6 cm-high obstacles. The results showed that greater height of obstacles leads to greater blockage of the flow, causing changes on vertical profiles of velocity shape, flow regime (supercritical to subcritical), geometry and flow circulation in the zone between obstacles. Obstacle height reduction by 50% led to similar behavior of the turbidity current as the no-obstacles condition. After passing over the sequence of the obstacle, the turbidity current tended to regenerate a hydrodynamic structure comparable to the no-obstacles conditions.

Abstract Turbidity current hydrodynamic properties are evaluated experimentally to understand the formation of turbidity current depositional lobes and the relationship with flow properties, in particular, flow rates. This study focused on the depositional behavior of unconfined turbidity currents through the analysis of three-dimensional experiments performed in a large-scale channel-basin tank without slope break. Three flow rates were simulated when flow velocities, both in longitudinal and transversal directions, were measured and resulting depositional features were evaluated. The three-dimensional physical experiments carried out in this work allowed the identification of two flow rate models with different hydrodynamic characteristics and two distinct lobes. Lower flow rates produced elongated lobate deposits, with characteristic lower flow regime plane bed on the surfaces, characteristic downstream sediment fining that resulted from lower flow velocities, and visibly less turbulent flows from less competent and waning turbidity currents. Higher flow rates showed a more characteristic radial and downstream fining sediment with lobe surfaces displaying ripples and dunes, generated by the higher flow velocities, presumably more turbulent, and more competent turbidity currents.

RESUMO Os estágios iniciais da onda oriunda da ruptura instantânea de uma barragem são avaliados espacial e temporalmente, através de 36 experimentos físicos. Diferentes condições foram testadas, variando as profundidades de água a jusante (J), a montante (M) e sua proporção (r). Dois parâmetros adimensionais são propostos – altura efetiva (HEF) e velocidade efetiva (VEF) – para avaliar a altura da lâmina d’água e os picos de velocidade ao longo do desenvolvimento da onda de ruptura de barragem. A altura máxima da onda é estimada em função de r, enquanto HEF está inversamente relacionada a r. O pico máximo de VEF é registrado para r entre 0,1 e 0,2, considerada uma situação crítica para barragens reais. A presença de água a jusante também modifica o formato da onda e os tipos de quebra dessa onda. As classificações publicadas anteriormente da onda em movimento, com base nessas características, são expandidas com um primeiro r testado (r = 0,8) para o qual nenhum jato foi identificado (movimento ondulado).

ABSTRACT The initial stages of instantaneous dam-break waves are here evaluated spatially and temporally through 36 physical experiments. Different conditions were tested for downstream (J) and upstream (M) water depths and their ratios (r) to approach realistic conditions for prototype dams. Two non-dimensional parameters are proposed – effective height (HEF) and effective velocity (VEF) – to evaluate water depths and velocity peaks along the dam-break wave evolution. The maximum wave height is estimated as a function of r, whereas the HEF is inversely related to r. The maximum VEF peak is registered for r between 0.1 and 0.2, considered a critical description for real dams. The presence of downstream water depth also modifies the dam-break wave frontal shape and types of wave break features. Previously published classifications of the moving wave based on those features are now expanded with a first tested r = 0.8 in which no jet was identified (undulated movement).

RESUMO Os fluxos gravitacionais de sedimentos são tipos de fluxos naturais compostos por água e sedimentos nos quais o fluxo gravitacional atua sobre o sedimento. As distintas propriedades físicas dos sedimentos coesivos (argila) e não coesivos (areia) e a interação entre essas partículas alteram a capacidade interna do fluxo em resistir ao movimento (reologia) ao longo do tempo e do espaço, capacidade representada pela viscosidade da suspensão de mistura. Assim, propomos estudar as propriedades reológicas dessas misturas e calcular sua viscosidade relativa utilizada na simulação física de correntes de turbidez. Foram realizados testes reológicos com várias misturas compostas por água, argila e/ou carvão. Duas equações são propostas para estimar a viscosidade relativa em função da concentração volumétrica de cada sedimento, a fração máxima de empacotamento e a porcentagem de argila presente na mistura. Os resultados também mostram um erro próximo a 20% na comparação de modelos semelhantes na literatura, o que é satisfatório. Os resultados também demonstraram a necessidade de cautela ao generalizar o uso de um único modelo para prever a viscosidade relativa das suspensões. A influência da densidade (ρ), formato do grão, porcentagem de argila (Cclay), concentração volumétrica (ϕ) e fração máxima de embalagem (ϕmax) devem ser considerados na formulação das equações.

ABSTRACT Sediment gravity flows are natural flows composed by water and sediment in which the gravitational flow acts on the sediment. The distinct physical properties of the cohesive (clay) and non-cohesive (sand) sediment, and the interaction between these particles alter the ability of the flow to resist to the movement (rheology) along time and space, represented by the viscosity of a mixture suspension. Hence, we propose to study the rheological properties of those mixtures and calculate their relative viscosity when used in the physical simulation of turbidity currents. Rheological tests were performed with various mixtures composed by water, clay and/or coal. Two equations are proposed to estimate the relative viscosity as a function of volume concentration of each sediment, the maximum packing fraction and the percentage of clay present in the mixture. The results also show an error close to 20% comparing similar models from the literature, which are satisfactory. The results also demonstrate that caution should be exercised when generalizing the use of a single model to predict the relative viscosity of suspensions. The influence of density (ρ), grain shape, clay percentage (Cclay), volumetric concentration (ϕ) and maximum packaging fraction (ϕmax) should be considered in the formulation of the equations.

Abstract Bedforms are sedimentary features that can be generated on the seafloor by the interaction between density currents and mobile beds. Developing knowledge about the hydraulic and sedimentary processes involved during these events is in the interest of research groups and oil companies. Because of the magnitude of the density currents in its natural environment and the challenge in collecting data, studies in laboratory are of great value. We present results of 29 experiments focusing in the bedform development generated by saline currents, testing two different sediment types and three grain sizes: melamine (245 µm-plastic) and sands (206 and 485 µm). We analyzed the current velocity and fractional density profiles as well as pictures taken during and after each run. Results have showed classical velocity and concentration profiles, for 8 subcritical and 21 supercritical currents, with densimetric Froude numbers (Frd) between 0.5 and 2.2. Some correlations were identified, such as the decrease of the velocity peak height and increase in the mean velocity (with consequent reduction of the current thickness), due to an increase of the concentration and/or flume slope. The occurrence of bedforms was more likely for high discharge and concentration rates of current density, which directly influence the Frd. Bedforms were classified according to the shear stresses values applied by the current to the bed, resulting in the generation of lower plane bed, ripples and dunes. Dunes and ripples were observed in supercritical flow conditions, which is a hydraulic scenario of bedforms generation not predicted by fluvial models. Thus, this study demonstrated the existence of differences in generation and, consequently, the classification approach for density current bedforms, compared to those generated by river flows. To this fact is attributed the hydrodynamic (velocity and concentration profiles) and sediment transport differences between fluvial flows and density currents. Further studies may be carried out in order to constructing new concepts of bedforms generation by density currents.

RESUMO: Controles autogênicos influenciam significativamente a morfologia dos leques de águas profundas e seus lobos deposicionais. Neste trabalho, objetivamos investigar a ação dos controles autogênicos sobre a topografia e a geometria de leques de águas profundas, bem como a influência da concentração de sedimentos gerados por correntes de turbidez sobre a morfologia destes. Por meio da repetibilidade de experimentos de modelagem física 3D de correntes de turbidez, foram realizadas duas séries de experimentos: correntes de turbidez de alta densidade (HDTC) e correntes de turbidez de baixa densidade (LDTC). Todos os demais parâmetros de entrada (vazão, concentração volumétrica de sedimentos e tamanho de grão) foram mantidos constantes. Cada depósito foi analisado mediante abordagens qualitativas e quantitativas e análise estatística. Em cada série experimental, foi observada a variabilidade dos parâmetros morfológicos dos depósitos gerados (comprimento, largura, razão comprimento/largura, área, topografia). Os leques de HDTC apresentaram evolução deposicional complexa, com quatro etapas evolutivas bem marcadas ao longo do tempo que resultaram no processo de autocanalização das correntes de turbidez, enquanto que nos leques de LDTC não foi identificado autocanalização ou quaisquer etapas evolutivas distintas. Altas disparidades na geometria dos leques, caracterizadas pelos elevados valores de desvio padrão relativo, sugerem que os controles autogênicos induziram a um comportamento morfológico estocástico nos leques.

ABSTRACT: Autogenic controls have significant influence on deep-water fans and depositional lobes morphology. In this work, we aim to investigate autogenic controls on the topography and geometry of deep-water fans. The influence of the sediment concentration of turbidity currents on deep-water fans morphology was also investigated. From the repeatability of 3D physical modeling of turbidity currents, two series of ten experiments were made, one of high-density turbidity currents (HDTC) and another of low-density turbidity currents (LDTC). All other input parameters (discharge, sediment volumetric concentration and grain size median) were kept constant. Each deposit was analyzed from qualitative and quantitative approaches and statistical analysis. In each experimental series, the variability of the morphological parameters (length, width, L/W ratio, centroid, area, topography) of the simulated deep-water fans was observed. Depositional evolution of the HDTC fans was more complex, showing four evolutionary steps and characterized by the self-channelizing of the turbidity current, while LDTC fans neither present self-channelizing, nor evolutionary steps. High disparities on the geometrical parameters of the fans, as characterized by the elevated relative standard deviation, suggest that autogenic controls induced a stochastic morphological behaviour on the simulated fans of the two experimental series.

RESUMO As correntes de densidade, cujo movimento ocorre pela diferença de massa específica entre o escoamento e o fluido ambiente ao seu redor, podem interagir com o substrato gerando formas de fundo, similares às encontradas em ambientes fluviais. Entretanto não existem diagramas de previsão específicos correspondentes para esse tipo de fenômeno. Assim, este trabalho visa comparar a ocorrência das formas de fundo fluviais previstas nos diagramas de previsão com aquelas geradas por correntes de densidade salinas obtidas experimentalmente. As formas de fundo foram geradas em um canal bidimensional de declividade variável, preenchido por água, com três composições de leito móvel e diferentes valores de vazão, massa especifica e inclinação. Três formas de fundo foram identificadas (leito plano inferior, ondulações e dunas), as quais, juntamente com o cálculo de parâmetros hidrodinâmicos permitiram a utilização dos diagramas fluviais. Verificou-se que os diagramas fluviais não apresentaram boas previsões das formas de fundo geradas por correntes de densidade. A esse fato são atribuídas as diferenças hidrodinâmicas dos escoamentos (perfis de velocidade e concentração) e, também, à limitação dos parâmetros dimensionais na extrapolação dos resultados. Dessa forma, indica-se a necessidade de se elaborar um diagrama de previsão próprio adaptado a estas correntes.

ABSTRACT Density currents, whose movement takes place by the density difference between the flow and the ambient fluid around it, can interact with the substract generating bedforms similar to the fluvial environments. However, there are no specific bedform phase diagrams capable to predict this type of phenomenon. This study aims to compare the prediction of fluvial bedforms phase diagram with those generated by experimental saline currents. Bedforms were generated in two-dimensional tilting plexiglass flume submerged in a larger tank filled with water with three different mobile beds and varied values of discharge and salt concentration. It was observed three types of bedform (lower plane bed, ripples and dunes), which, with the concomitant calculation of hydrodynamic parameters (mean velocity, energy and mobility) allowed the use of the phase diagram. It was observed that the fluvial phase diagrams did not present good predictions for bedforms generated by density currents. This fact is associated to the hydrodynamics differences (velocity and concentration profiles) and the limitation of the dimensional parameters in the extrapolation of results. Therefore, it is indicated the need to draw up a proper phase diagram to density currents.
