abstract Proper curing of concrete is one of the most important processes in the post-concreting period so that concrete can achieve the desired mechanical strength and durability. However, part of the construction works perform this procedure for inadequate periods or often do not perform it; as a result, surface characteristics are commonly affected, resulting in increased porosity and, consequently, increased permeability, cracking and carbonation. Materials that have water retention capacity and subsequent gradual release may be effective as internal curing agents. Superabsorbent polymers (PSA) are already used and widely studied for this purpose, but usually with commercial origin. The objective of this research is to evaluate different water absorption methods in industrial waste of superabsorbent polymer and cellulosic fiber (PSAR) for later use as an internal curing agent in Portland cement matrices. PSAR was homogenized by a process at two different times. The material in its natural state and homogenized had its absorption capacity evaluated using two methods: ISO 17190:2001 and sieve method. For the sieve method, the influence of hydration time on absorption was analyzed. The ISO 17190:2001 method did not show representativeness in the results due to the high absorption variation. The sieve method was more representative and demonstrated efficiency in the homogenization processes, reducing the coefficient of variation by up to 43%. The material with the highest potential for use was PSAR60, with an absorption value of 68.26 g of water per g of PSAR, since the absorption test showed the highest homogeneity and, from this absorption, no longer had significant variations.

Abstract The scarcity of high-purity limestone subjects the cement industry to consider alternative supplementary cementitious materials for cement production. This research aimed to investigate the mechanical properties and the hydration kinetics of cement pastes in the presence of high levels and different fineness of dolomite, especially the formation of thaumasite. A dolomite filler with 20% magnesium oxide, with average diameters of 10 µm, 6 µm and 4 µm was used as a partial replacement for Portland cement at 0%, 15% and 35% in cement pastes cured at 5 ºC and 20 ºC. The results of compressive strength showed similarities in all pastes analyzed, but the fineness of the dolomite showed a significant difference between the strengths obtained. The isothermal calorimetry indicated that the presence of dolomite had a nucleation and dilution effect. The thermogravimetry revealed that dependent of the substitution levels, the pastes with dolomite presented significant differences in the amount of ettringite and carbonate phases. The mineralogical analysis detected the presence of thaumasite only at the temperature of 20 ºC, which this mineral can also form at higher temperatures than those reported in the literature. Finally, we conclude positively about the possibility of using dolomite in cementitious matrices at levels up to 35%, regardless of fineness and curing temperature.

Resumo A escassez de calcário de alta pureza sujeita a indústria cimenteira a considerar materiais cimentícios suplementares alternativos para a produção de cimentos. Esta pesquisa buscou investigar a cinética de hidratação e as propriedades de pastas cimentícias na presença de elevados teores e diferentes finuras de dolomita, em especial à formação de taumasita. Adotou-se um fíler dolomítico com 20% de óxido de magnésio, de diâmetros médios de 10 µm, 6 µm e 4 µm como substituto parcial do cimento Portland nos teores 0%, 15% e 35% em pastas cimentícias curadas a 5 ºC e 20 ºC. Os resultados de resistência à compressão apresentaram semelhanças em todas as pastas analisadas, mas a finura da dolomita mostrou uma diferença significativa entre as médias de resistências obtidas. A calorimetria isotérmica apontou que a presença de dolomita apresentou efeito de nucleação e diluição. A termogravimetria revelou que dependente dos teores de substituição, as pastas com dolomita apresentaram diferenças significativas na quantidade de fases de etringita e carbonatos. A análise mineralógica detectou a presença de taumasita apenas na temperatura de 20 ºC, em que esse mineral também pode se formar em temperaturas mais elevadas do que as temperaturas relatadas na literatura. Por fim, conclui-se positivamente sobre a possibilidade de utilização de dolomita em matrizes cimentícias em teores de até 35%, independente da finura e da temperatura de cura.

Resumo A presente investigação objetiva analisar a utilização de materiais pozolânicos e resíduos de demolição de concreto nas propriedades mecânicas e de durabilidade em concretos com misturas binárias. Foram produzidas dez formulações, distinguindo-as em diferentes traços com o uso de diferentes cimentos Portland, diferentes pozolanas e agregados graúdos da demolição de concretos, a fim de verificar suas particularidades através dos ensaios de resistência à compressão axial, módulo de elasticidade longitudinal e penetração de íons cloreto por imersão. As substituições de materiais se deram em 15 e 30% do agregado graúdo natural por resíduos de demolição de concreto e em substituições de 25% do aglomerante por cinza de casca de arroz e cinza volante para as misturas binárias. Os resultados evidenciaram que nos testes de resistências à compressão axial e módulo de elasticidade dos concretos, os valores finais foram afetados pelo uso dos resíduos de demolição, todavia balanceados com o uso dos materiais cimentícios suplementares. Quanto ao ensaio de durabilidade, verificou-se que os menores coeficientes ocorreram nos traços com a utilização do CP V-ARI, juntamente com as pozolanas, nas misturas com substituições parciais do agregado natural por agregado reciclado em 15%. Pôde-se concluir, contudo, a viabilidade da utilização de agregados reciclados em concretos, porém condicionados com o uso concomitante de materiais pozolânicos.

Abstract The objective of this study is to analyse the use of binary mixtures of pozzolanic materials and concrete demolition waste in concrete mixtures, especially the resulting mechanical properties and durability. A total of ten concrete formulations were produced distinguishing them in different types using different Portland cements, different artificial pozzolans and coarse aggregates from concrete demolition. The particular properties of each formulation were verified by testing the axial compressive strength, longitudinal modulus of elasticity and penetration of chloride under immersion. Substitutions were of 15% w.t. and 30% w.t. natural coarse aggregate substituted with concrete demolition waste and, in the case of binary mixtures, additional 25% w.t. of the binder agglomerate substituted with rice husk ash or fly ash. Results showed that the final strength to axial compression and modulus of elasticity of concrete mixtures were negatively affected by utilising demolition waste, but this effect was balanced by adding supplementary cementitious materials. Regarding the durability test, it was found that the lowest coefficients occurred in the mixtures using CP V-ARI, together with artificial pozzolans, in mixtures with 15% w.t. substitution of natural aggregate with recycled aggregate. It was concluded that using recycled aggregates in concrete is viable but conditioned to the concomitant use of pozzolanic materials.

Resumo O comportamento elástico do concreto é estimado a partir de sua resistência a compressão ou determinado por ensaios estáticos ou dinâmicos. Como a maioria das normas não consideram o teor de umidade interna do concreto e desconsideram o uso de agregados reciclados ao propor equações para a estimativa do módulo de elasticidade, é frequente se observar divergências entre os valores determinados. Nesse trabalho, a influência da umidade do exemplar e do uso de agregados reciclados no módulo de elasticidade dinâmico são avaliadas. Foram utilizados um agregado basaltico e dois agregados provenientes da cominuição de concreto, sendo produzidos concretos com resistência entre 25 MPa e 55 MPa. Os módulos de elasticidade dinâmicos dos exemplares foram determinados nos estados saturado e seco, variando entre 26 GPa e 46 GPa. Conclui-se que há sensíveis diferenças de módulo de elasticidade dinâmico entre o concreto seco e saturado e em função do tipo de agregado utilizado, sendo imprescindível que esses fatores sejam considerados nas equações propostas pelas normas para a estimativa do módulo de elasticidade.

Abstract The elastic behavior of the concrete is estimated from its strength or determined by static or dynamic tests. However, because the codes of practice do not standardize the internal moisture content of the concrete and disregard the use of recycled aggregates when proposing equations for the estimation of the modulus of elasticity, discrepancies between the values measured and estimated are frequent. The influence of the moisture content of concrete containing basaltic coarse aggregates and coarse recycled concrete aggregate in the dynamic modulus of elasticity is discussed in this paper. A basalt coarse aggregate and two recycled coarse aggregates where used. For each type of coarse aggregate, concrete with compression strength between 25 MPa and 55 MPa were produced. The dynamic modulus of elasticity of the saturated samples were determined and range from 26 GPa to 46 GPa. There is a significant difference in the value of the dynamic modulus of elasticity for dry concrete versus saturated concrete, also influenced by the type of aggregate. Estimations of the modulus of elasticity from the compressive strength equations proposed by the codes of practice must be improved considering its characteristics.

Atualmente há um expressivo aumento no consumo de cimento, aliado à crescente preocupação ambiental inserida dentro do processo industrial. Com o intuito de amenizar impactos gerados pelo consumo de matéria-prima e emissão de CO2 para a atmosfera, foi realizado um estudo em laboratório no qual a escória do forno panela (EFP), um resíduo da indústria siderúrgica, foi empregada para fabricação do clínquer Portland. O objetivo é avaliar a qualidade do clínquer e a emissão de CO2 gerada ao adicionar esse subproduto na farinha do clínquer. Foram realizadas análises termogravimétricas para quantificar as emissões de CO2 por farinhas sem e com EFP, a partir da avaliação de sua decomposição em elevadas temperaturas. Os clínqueres produzidos foram avaliados qualitativamente por difração de raios X e microscopia óptica. Os resultados demonstram que o clínquer produzido com EFP tem uma emissão de CO2 16,51% mais baixa que o clínquer referência, produzido apenas com reagentes químicos puros. Os resultados dessa análise mineralógica por difração de raios X e microscopia óptica de luz refletida mostraram-se satisfatórios, observando-se uma melhor queimabilidade da farinha com EFP.

Currently, there is a considerable increase in cement consumption, alongside a growing concern with environmental issues in the industrial process. In order to mitigate the impacts caused by the consumption of raw materials and CO2 emissions in the atmosphere, a laboratory study was conducted in which ladle furnace slag (LFS) from the steel industry was used in the manufacture of Portland cement clinker. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the quality of the clinker and CO2 emissions generated by adding ladle furnace slag (LFS) to the raw meal used in clinker production. Thermogravimetric analyses were performed to quantify the CO2 emissions generated by mixtures with and without LFS, based on the evaluation of their decomposition at increased temperatures. The clinkers produced were evaluated qualitatively by X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. The results demonstrated that clinker produced with LFS had CO2 emissions 16,51% lower than those of the control clinker, made only with pure reagents. The results of the mineralogical analysis and optical microscopy in reflected light were satisfactory, showing evidence of improved raw mix burnability with LFS.
