Resumo: O artigo investiga as estratégias bem-sucedidas, mobilizadas pelos alunos do ciclo de alfabetização ao resolverem problemas de proporção simples. Solicitou-se a 483 alunos do 1º ao 3º ano que resolvessem seis problemas de proporção, sendo analisadas as respostas de 182 alunos que tiveram estratégias bem-sucedidas. Quando comparados os anos escolares, há aumento nos acertos de ano para ano, na classe de situações um para muitos, o que não se pode afirmar sobre a classe muito para muitos, que permaneceu estagnada. Pelos resultados obtidos, é possível que a estrutura multiplicativa esteja sendo pouco discutida, nos três primeiros anos do Ensino Fundamental.

Abstract: The article investigates the successful strategies mobilized by students in the literacy cycle when solving problems of simple proportion. 483 students from the 1st to the 3rd grade of Brazilian Elementary Education, were asked to solve six problems of proportion, and the responses of 182 students who had successful strategies were analyzed. When comparing school grades, there is an increase in hits from year to year, in the class of situations one-to-many, which cannot be said about the class for many, which remained stagnant. From the results obtained, it is possible that the multiplicative structure is being little discussed in the first three grades of elementary school.

Resumo: O estudo investigou a resolução de problemas de produto cartesiano diretos (requer a multiplicação para sua resolução) e inverso (requer a divisão para sua resolução) por alunos do Ensino Fundamental, examinando o nível de complexidade deles e os procedimentos adotados por esses alunos em função do tipo de problema. Solicitou-se que 269 alunos do 3º ao 5º ano, entre 8 e 10 anos, resolvessem um problema de produto cartesiano direto e outro inverso. Como esperado, o problema inverso foi o mais difícil. As estratégias mostraram que os níveis de raciocínio combinatório variavam em função do tipo de problema. Observou-se uma progressão no processo de resolução de problemas de produto cartesiano diretos, mas não nos inversos.

Abstract: The study investigated the solution of direct (which requires multiplication for its resolution) and inverse (which requires division for its resolution) Cartesian product problems by elementary education students, examining the level of problem complexity and the children procedures according to the type of problem. A total of 269 8 and 10 year-old students attending from 3rd to 5th grade, were asked 8 and 10 years to solve direct and inverse Cartesian product problems. As expected, the inverse problem was the most difficult one. The strategies showed that levels of combinatorial reasoning vary according to the type of problem. It was also found a progression in the solution of direct Cartesian product problems, but not in relation to the solution of inverse problems.

Este artigo analisa o desempenho e as estratégias de estudantes dos 3º e 5º anos do Ensino Fundamental na resolução de duas situações do Campo Conceitual Multiplicativo, classificando os níveis de raciocínio empregados por eles. O estudo baseou-se nas ideias teóricas de Vergnaud, e consistiu da aplicação de um teste, composto por 13 questões, para 349 estudantes de uma Escola Pública de São Paulo. Para efeito deste artigo, a discussão centrou-se em duas classes de situações: uma envolvendo a correspondência um para muitos, e a outra, a correspondência de muitos para muitos. Os resultados apontam para uma evolução limitada da competência dos estudantes ao lidarem com problema multiplicativo. Analisando apenas o problema que envolveu a ideia de muitos para muitos, essa evolução cai drasticamente. Do ponto de vista das estratégias, os estudantes do 5º ano usaram, prioritariamente, procedimentos multiplicativos, enquanto os do 3º ano usaram aditivos.

This paper analyzes the performance and strategies for students of 3rd and 5th grades of elementary school in solving of multiplicative conceptual field situations, classifying the level of reasoning employed by these students whilst they were dealing with them. The study, was based on the theoretical ideas of Vergnaud, consisted of a test, composed by 13 questions, applied in 349 students from a public school, sited in São Paulo. Regarding this paper, the discussion will be centered on two questions: one related to the idea of correspondence one to one and another focused on correspondence many to many. The results show a limited evolution regarding students' performance from 3 to 5 to deal with multiplicative problems. Considering only the many to many problem, this development fails drastically. From the perpective of strategies, 5th grade students focused on multiplication mainly, whereas the 3rd grade ones on addition.
