Resumo Apresentamos os resultados de um estudo com egressos do Ensino Médio que buscou investigar o nível de alfabetização científica e a capacidade de interpretar situações do trânsito à luz da Física. A partir desta mensuração, realizamos testes estatísticos a fim de inferir se tais índices possuíam conexão com as aulas de Física que os participantes vivenciaram e também com o grau de informação sobre temas científicos que acreditavam deter. Como resultados, foi possível evidenciar ligações estatisticamente significativas entre a maioria dos constructos analisados, destacando a correlação entre o nível de alfabetização científica de quem assistiu aulas de Física com características que poderiam potencializar uma Aprendizagem Significativa. Como contribuição, defendemos a inclusão de um quarto eixo, o da proficiência científica, no modo de mensurar o nível de alfabetização científica, postulado por Jon Miller, no qual considera alfabetizado cientificamente aqueles que apresentarem domínio mínimo: 1) dos conteúdos da Ciência; 2) da Natureza da Ciência; e 3) do Impacto da Ciência e Tecnologia na Sociedade e meio ambiente.

Abstract We present the results of a study with High School graduates that sought to investigate the scientific literacy level and the ability to interpret traffic situations in the light of Physics. From this measurement, we performed statistical tests in order to infer if these indexes had a connection with previous Physics classes experienced by the participants and also with the degree of information about scientific topics that they believed to hold. As results, it was possible to show statistically significant connections between the majority of the analyzed constructs, highlighting the correlation between the scientific literacy level of those who attended Physics classes with characteristics that could enhance Significant Learning. As a contribution, we defend the inclusion of a fourth axis, Scientific Proficiency, in the way of measuring the level of scientific literacy, postulated by Joh Miller, in which it is considered scientifically literate those who submit minimum domain: 1) of the contents of science; 2) of nature of science; and 3) of the impact of science and technology on society and the environment.

Resumo A cada segundo que passa, um número muito grande de partículas de origem cósmica atravessam o planeta. A maior parte delas pouco interage com a matéria e sua passagem não é percebida, exceto pelos pesquisadores da física de partículas. Os raios cósmicos são um tipo destas partículas, de origem extraterrestre, que podem ser estudados com auxílio de detectores. Neste trabalho, apresentamos um estudo sobre as formas como os raios cósmicos interagem durante sua propagação até a Terra, levando a um limite de energia acessível para detectores no solo. Utilizando apenas conhecimentos de Eletromagnetismo e de Relatividade Restrita, buscamos explicar este mecanismo para estudantes que tenham interesse na área, mas que ainda não aprofundaram estudos em física de partículas. Nosso objetivo é apresentar um material didático e acessível para estes interessados.

Abstract A very large number of particles of cosmic origin cross the planet every second. Most of them rarely interact with matter, and their passage is not perceived except by researchers of particle physics. Cosmic rays are a type of these particles, of extraterrestrial origin, that can be studied with the help of detectors. In this work, we present a study on the ways in which cosmic rays interact during their propagation to Earth, leading to an accessible energy limit for detectors in the ground. Using only Electromagnetism and Special Relativity knowledge, we seek to explain this mechanism to students who have an interest in the field, but who have not yet studied in particle physics. Our objective is to present a didactic and accessible material for these interested parties.

Resumo A Física estuda fenômenos da natureza e que comumente podem ser observados no cotidiano. O trânsito é uma dessas situações, e acredita-se que uma aproximação entre os conceitos físicos e situações aplicadas no cotidiano do trânsito pode possibilitar ao estudante melhores compreensões da Física do Ensino Médio e acima de tudo, que esses conhecimentos possam ser utilizados durante a vida do indivíduo. Porém, verificar se os egressos da escola estabelecem relações entre conteúdos de Física com fenômenos observados no trânsito ainda é um grande campo de estudo. O presente artigo apresenta o trabalho de validação de um questionário elaborado para uma pesquisa de mestrado. Para tal, a validade de conteúdo foi realizada através de juízes especialistas da área; calculamos a consistência interna através do coeficiente Alfa de Cronbach, obtendo valor de 0,74, assim como utilizou-se o Teste U de Mann-Whitney para observar se havia diferenças entre as médias de acertos dos dois grupos estudados. Os resultados atestam que o instrumento possui validade para os objetivos da pesquisa, consistindo de um teste para verificar a retenção conceitual de assuntos de Física em egressos do Ensino Médio.

Abstract Physics studies the nature and phenomena which commonly can be observed in everyday life. Traffic is one of those situations, and it is believed that a rapprochement between the physical concepts and situations applied in everyday traffic can enable the student best understandings of Physics in middle school and above all, that this knowledge can be used during the life of the individual. However, verify that the graduates of the school establish relationships between Physical content with phenomena observed in traffic is still a major field of study. This article presents the work of validation of a questionnaire prepared for a master's research. To this end, the validity of content was accomplished by judges' specialists; We calculate the internal consistency through the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, obtaining 0.74 value, as well as using the Mann-Whitney U Test to see if there were differences between the averages of the two groups. The results attest that the instrument has validity for the purposes of research, consisting of a test to check the conceptual physics Affairs retention in high school graduates.

Resumo Neste artigo, vamos estudar alguns conceitos fundamentais em física de partículas através do estudo detalhado de um processo específico da Eletrodinâmica Quântica (QED): o espalhamento Bhabha em ordem dominante (Leading Order - LO). Este ocorre na interação entre um elétron e sua antipartícula, o pósitron, sendo um dos processos básicos da QED. Nossa escolha em trabalhar este processo deve-se a riqueza de detalhes proporcionada pelas duas possibilidades (canais) de interação, que servem para ilustrar o cálculo da interferência entre as possibilidades. Além disso, esse processo é utilizado para determinar a luminosidade de um determinado colisor, o que garante maior precisão nas medidas de outras grandezas relevantes para a análise das interações entre partículas. Finalmente, comparamos a predição da QED com os resultados do experimento DESY-PETRA-TASSO.

Abstract In this article, we will look at some fundamental concepts in Particle Physics through the detailed study of a specific process of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED): the Bhabha scattering. It occurs in the interaction between an electron and its antiparticle, the positron, one of the basic QED processes. Our choice for work this process is due to the wealth of details provided by the two possibilities (channels) of interaction which serve to illustrate the calculation of interference between possibilities. Furthermore, this process is used to determine the luminosity of a particular collider, which ensures greater accuracy in measurements of other relevant quantities for the analysis of interactions between particles. Finally, comparing the QED prediction with the experimental results of the DESY-PETRA-TASSO experiment.

Um dos maiores obstáculos para aprender Física no Ensino Médio é, segundo o relato dos professores, sua abordagem matemática. Neste trabalho propomos uma atividade que integra conteúdos de física e matemática, de forma a tornar a função quadrática significativa para os estudantes. Relatamos as atividades planejadas e aplicadas em sala de aula, com alunos do 1° ano do Ensino Médio de uma escola pública situada no interior do RS. As atividades referiam-se a produção de espelhos parabólicos em dois modelos diferentes, e na sequência a construção do conceito de função polinomial de 2o grau (a chamada função quadrática). Foram utilizados tanto o espaço da sala de aula como o espaço da casa dos estudantes, permitindo vivenciar a aprendizagem durante o tempo que a atividade durou. Trabalhamos com a metodologia construtivista. Concluímos que tal classe de atividades, denominadas hands-on, realmente conseguem trazer significância para os conceitos normalmente abordados de forma abstrata nos livros didáticos.

One of the biggest obstacles to learn physics in High School is, according teachers’ account, their mathematical approach. In this paper we propose an activity that integrates Physics and Math contents, in order to make quadratic function significant for the students. We report the activities planned and implemented in the classroom, with High School 1st year students in a public school located within the RS. The activities referred to the production of parabolic mirrors in two different models, followed by the construction of the concept of 2nd degree polynomial (the so called quadratic function). Therefore, we used both the classroom space and students’ home space, allowing experience learning during the period that lasted the activity. We work under a constructivist methodology. We conclude that such activities class, called hands-on, can really bring significance to the concepts usually covered abstractly in textbooks.

RESUMO: Apresentamos o procedimento de validação de um instrumento para verificação de aspectos da Alfabetização Científica para egressos do Ensino Médio. O questionário dividiu-se em questões sobre conceitos da física aplicada em situações do trânsito e sobre características do perfil das aulas de Física assistidas pelos egressos durante o Ensino Médio. Contando inicialmente com 64 itens, os mesmos foram avaliados quanto ao seu conteúdo por professores da área e posteriormente, através de testes estatísticos, estimou-se os quantitativos de validação e confiabilidade. Ao final, 19 itens foram removidos e obteve-se um instrumento considerado válido e fidedigno com 25 itens sobre física no trânsito e 20 itens sobre o perfil do Ensino de Física, com fins de utilização para avaliação da alfabetização científica.

ABSTRACT: We present the validation procedure of an instrument to verify aspects of Scientific Literacy for High School graduates. The questionnaire was divided into questions about concepts of applied Physics in traffic situations and on the profile characters of the physics classes attended by the graduates during High School. Initially, it counts 64 items, that were assessed for their content by teachers in the area and later, through statistical tests, the quantitative results for validation and reliability were estimated. Finally, we remove 19 items and a valid and reliable instrument was obtained with 25 items on traffic applied Physics and 20 items on the Physics Education profile, for use in scientific literacy assessment.

Este artigo apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa de mestrado que buscou investigar se egressos do Ensino Médio estabelecem relações entre conteúdos de Física estudados na escola com fenômenos Físicos observados no cotidiano do trânsito, evidenciando se a proposta de ensino orientada pelos documentos oficiais do Ministério da Educação, que sugere um ensino para a vida, está surtindo resultados positivos posteriores a sua formação na escola. Os investigados foram 202 egressos do Ensino Médio, estudantes de autoescolas de Passo Fundo/RS, que responderam a um questionário de múltipla escolha com 10 questões, analisadas com técnicas estatísticas. Como resultado, pode-se constatar que os estudantes não relacionam a Física e o trânsito de forma satisfatória; a qualidade do Ensino Médio e as experiências vivenciadas podem ter sido relevantes para influenciar o bom desempenho de uma parcela menor dos participantes; fatores relacionados com a escola, modelo de ensino, estrutura, assim como professores, relações com os alunos, didática, relações afetivas e metodologia de ensino foram pontos destacados através das análises, sugerindo correlação com a retenção do conhecimento.

This article presents the results of a master's research that sought to investigate whether graduated in high school establish relationships between the physics contents, studied during the school, with Physical phenomena observed in everyday traffic, showing if the teaching proposal guided by official documents of the Ministério da Educação, that suggest a teaching for life, is having positive results after their training in school. Those submitted were 202 graduated in high school, driving schools students from Passo Fundo/RS, who answered a multiple choice questionnaire with 10 questions, analyzed with statistical techniques. As result, it can be observed that students do not visualize a relationship between physics and traffic; the quality of secondary education and the life experiences could be relevant to influence the good performance of a small portion of the participants; factors related to the school, teaching model, structure; as well as teachers, relationships with students, didacticism, personal relationships and teaching methodology were highlighted points through the analysis, suggesting correlation with knowledge retention.

O objetivo deste artigo é introduzir alguns conceitos físicos utilizados no maior colisor de partículas do mundo (LHC) e demonstrar que esse equipamento não oferece risco algum à Terra. Esses conceitos serão tratados a partir de conteúdos abordados no Ensino Médio, servindo, desse modo, como incentivo as práticas docentes no ensino de física básica. Os tópicos abordados serão: raios cósmicos, mini-buracos negros, campos magnéticos, detectores de partículas, luminosidade, partícula de Higgs, cavidades de RF (rádio frequência), energia armazenada em diferentes formas e o modelo padrão das partículas elementares. Os cálculos apresentados aqui são apenas aproximações pois, na maioria destes, foram desconsiderados os efeitos relativísticos.

The goal of this article is to introduce some physical concepts used in the largest particle collider in the world (LHC) and demonstrate that this equipment does not offer any risk to Earth. These concepts will be treated from content covered in high school, thus serving as an incentive to teaching practices in the basic Physics teaching. Topics covered will be: cosmic rays, mini-black holes, magnetic fields, particle detectors, luminosity, Higgs particle, RF (radio frequency) cavities, energy stored in different ways and the Standard Model of elementary particles. The calculations presented here are only approximations because, in most of these, were disregarded relativistic effects.
