ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the prevalence of the need for orthodontic treatment, anxiety, and probable sleep bruxism and its association in adolescents. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 294 adolescents aged between 11 and 16 years. Orthodontic treatment need was determined using the Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs (IOTN-DHC). Anxiety symptoms were assessed using the Brazilian version of the Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC). The probable sleep bruxism was identified based on the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) questionnaire. Descriptive data analyses were performed. Simple logistic regression models were applied between each independent variable and the outcome (anxiety score). Variables with p<0.20 in the individual (raw) analyses were studied in a multiple logistic regression model, with p≤0.05 remaining in the final model. Based on the regression models, the prevalence ratios were estimated with the respective 95% confidence intervals. Results: 68.7% of the adolescents had probable sleep bruxism, and 35.4% had a moderate or severe normative need for orthodontic treatment. Adolescents aged up to 12 years (OR=1.82; CI: 1.10-3.02), females (OR=2.67; CI: 1.64-4.34), and with a moderate or severe need for orthodontic treatment according to the IOTN-DHC (OR=1.76; CI: 1.06-2.90), are more likely to have a higher anxiety score. The prevalence of adolescents with a moderate or severe need for normative orthodontic treatment by the IOTN-DHC is 35.4% (95%CI: 29.9-40.8%), while the perceived need for treatment by the IOTN-AC is 14.0% (95%CI: 10.0-17.9%). Adolescents with a high degree of anxiety were more likely to have probable sleep bruxism (OR=3.64; CI: 1.06-12.50). Conclusion: Female adolescents up to 12 years of age and with a moderate or severe need for orthodontic treatment are more likely to have higher levels of anxiety; adolescents with a high degree of anxiety are more likely to have probable sleep bruxism. Abstract This study aimed to assess and correlate initial surface roughness and frictional resistance of rectangular CuNiTi wires inserted in different self-ligating brackets. The sample consisted of 40 bracket-wire sets (rectangular CuNiTi wires of 0.017" x 0.025" and passive self-ligating brackets) divided into four groups (n=10): metallic self-ligating bracket and metallic CuNiTi wire (G1); metallic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G2); esthetic self-ligating bracket and metallic wire (G3); esthetic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G4). The initial surface roughness of the wires was examined with a Surfcorder roughness meter, model SE1700. Later, frictional resistance was assessed in an Instron 4411 universal testing machine at a speed of 5 mm/min, in an aqueous medium at 35°C. Microscopic analyses of surface morphology were performed with scanning electron microscopy, using an LEO 1430, with magnifications of 1000X. Generalized linear models were applied, considering the 2 x 2 factorial (bracket type x wire type), at a 5% significance level. Regardless of bracket type, the groups with esthetic wires presented higher initial surface roughness than the groups with metallic wires (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the different bracket-wire sets for frictional resistance and no significant correlation between frictional resistance and initial surface roughness in the environment studied. Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar e correlacionar a rugosidade superficial inicial e a resistência a fricção dos fios CuNiTi retangulares inseridos em diferentes bráquetes autoligados. A amostra foi composta por 40 conjuntos bráquetes-fios (fios retangulares CuNiTi de 0.017” x 0.025” e braquetes autoligados passivos), divididos em 4 grupos (n=10): bráquete autoligado metálico e fio CuNiti metálico (G1); braquete autoligado metálico e fio CuNiti com revestimento de rhodium (G2); bráquete autoligado estético e fio metálico (G3); bráquete autoligado estético e fio CuNiti com revestimento de rhodium (G4). Resumo Introdução A movimentação ortodôntica pode causar sintomatologia dolorosa, principalmente nas fases iniciais do tratamento. Objetivo Este estudo teve como objetivo comparar o desempenho da goma de mascar e do ibuprofeno no controle da dor durante o período inicial do tratamento ortodôntico. Material e método Foi desenvolvido um ensaio clínico randomizado cego, com razão de alocação de 1:1, com pacientes com idade ≥18 anos. O tamanho da amostra foi estabelecido considerando um nível de significância de 5% e poder do teste de 80%, resultando em um mínimo de 30 voluntários por grupo (n=90). Os participantes foram pareados quanto ao sexo, idade, gravidade da má oclusão, definida pelo Componente de Saúde Bucal (DHC) do Índice de Necessidade de Tratamento Ortodôntico (IOTN), e apinhamento, determinado pelo índice de irregularidade de Little. A amostra foi distribuída aleatoriamente em três grupos: Grupo I (controle) placebo; Goma de mascar Grupo II; e Grupo III Ibuprofeno. A percepção da dor foi avaliada pela Escala Visual Analógica (EVA) nas primeiras 24, 36 e 48 horas após a ativação do aparelho ortodôntico. Os dados foram analisados por modelos lineares generalizados para medidas repetidas no tempo. Resultado Não foi observada diferença estatisticamente significativa (p>0.05) entre os grupos para os métodos de terapia da dor avaliados em 24, 36 e 48 horas pós-ativação. Conclusão: Não houve diferença entre o método utilizado para controle da dor durante o tratamento ortodôntico.

Abstract Introduction Orthodontic movement can cause painful symptoms, especially in the early stages of treatment. Objective This study aimed to compare the performance of chewing gum and ibuprofen in pain control during the initial period of orthodontic treatment. Material and method A randomized blind clinical trial, with an allocation ratio of 1:1, was developed with patients aged ≥18 years old. The sample size was established considering a significance level of 5% and test power of 80%, resulting in a minimum of 30 volunteers per group (n=90). Participants were paired regarding sex, age, the severity of malocclusion, defined by the Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), and crowding, determined by Little’s irregularity index. The sample was randomly allocated to three groups: Group I (control) placebo; Group II chewing gum; and Group III Ibuprofen. Pain perception was evaluated by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) in the first 24, 36, and 48 hours after activation of the orthodontic appliance. The data were analyzed by generalized linear models for repeated measures in time. Result No statistically significant difference (p>0.05) was observed among the groups for the methods of pain therapy evaluated in 24, 36, and 48 hours post-activation. Conclusion There was no difference among the method used for pain control during the orthodontic treatment.

Abstract Objective: To associate the OHRQoL and HRQoL in mixed dentition children with the influence on age range, socioeconomic and clinical variables. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 1,240 children between 6 and 12 years of age. HRQoL was assessed by the Quality of Life Assessment Scale, considered an outcome variable. OHRQoL was determined using specific questionnaires related to the age group: Oral Health Impact Scale in Early Childhood, Child Perceptions Questionnaire for 8 to 10 years, and 11 to 12 years. Dental caries and malocclusion were diagnosed. The socioeconomic class was evaluated. A multiple negative binomial regression analysis was used to test the relationship between HRQoL, OHRQoL scores and socioeconomic and clinical variables. Correlation analyses were performed between the total HRQoL and OHRQoL, with a significance level of 5%. Results: The HRQoL is inversely related to the impact of OHRQoL (p<0.05), modulated by the age group. There was a significant weak negative correlation between the HRQoL scores and the impact of OHRQoL (p<0.05). Conclusion: The OHRQoL impacts the HRQoL, modulated by the age group and with minor influence from socioeconomic and clinical variables.

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the psychosocial impact of malocclusion and self-esteem in adolescents in the Amazon region. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 212 adolescents with 12-year-old enrolled in all public schools in the Boca do Acre (Amazonas, Brazil). Psychosocial Impact of Dental Aesthetics Questionnaire (PIDAQ) assessed the psychosocial impact of malocclusion. The self-perception of the need for orthodontic treatment was evaluated by the Aesthetic Component (AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and Global Negative Self-evaluation (GSE), the adolescent's self-esteem. The malocclusion was clinically evaluated by the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). The variables with p<0.20 in the individual analyses were tested in multiple logistic regression models, and those with p<0.10 remained in the model. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) was estimated with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Adolescents with low self-esteem were 2.20 (95% CI: 1.23-3.93) times more likely to have a more significant impact on dental aesthetics (p<0.05). When verified by domains, the adolescents with low self-esteem had 2.33 (95% CI: 1.31-4.17) and 1.93 (95% CI: 1.09-3.42) times more likely to impact the psychological and social domains of the PIDAQ, respectively. Conclusion: Self-esteem influenced adolescents' perception of dental aesthetics in the domains related to psychological and social impact. RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a influência das ligaduras elásticas submetidas a um processo prévio de pigmentação in vitro, com diferentes substâncias, na estética do sorriso durante o tratamento ortodôntico, segundo a percepção de alunos e profissionais. Métodos: Oito ligaduras elásticas de cinco marcas comerciais (3M Unitek, American Orthodontics, Morelli, Ortho Technology e Orthometric) (n = 8) foram imersas em café, Coca-Cola e vinho tinto por um minuto por dia, por 28 dias, e outro grupo de ligaduras foi imerso em saliva artificial. Todas as amostras foram fotografadas e posteriormente analisadas no software Adobe Photoshop, pelo método RGB. Em seguida, as ligaduras pigmentadas foram inseridas em um paciente com braquetes ortodônticos, e fotografias ampliadas do sorriso foram tiradas e apresentadas a 40 avaliadores, que preencheram uma escala de satisfação para representar sua opinião sobre a estética do sorriso de cada fotografia. Os dados de cor foram submetidos à análise de variância (ANOVA) e testes de Tukey. Resultados: A substância com maior potencial de pigmentação foi o café (p< 0,05), seguido do vinho tinto (p< 0,05). A comparação entre as marcas utilizadas nesse estudo mostrou que a American Orthodontics e a Orthometric apresentaram o menor grau de pigmentação quando imersas em café e vinho tinto (p< 0,05), respectivamente. Porém, a marca que apresentou maior nível de satisfação entre os avaliadores foi a Ortho Technology. Conclusões: A presença de ligaduras elásticas pigmentadas afetou a estética do sorriso, quando comparada à do grupo controle.

ABSTRACT Aim: To assess the influence of elastomeric ligatures, subjected to a previous in vitro pigmentation process using different substances, on smile aesthetics during orthodontic treatment, from the perception of students and professionals. Methods: Eight elastomeric ligatures of five commercial brands (3M/Unitek, American Orthodontics, Morelli, Ortho Technology, and Orthometric) (n=8) were immersed in coffee, Coca-Cola, and red wine for one minute per day, for 28 days; and another group of ligatures was immersed in artificial saliva. All samples were photographed and subsequently analyzed using the Adobe Photoshop software, by the RGB method. Afterwards, the pigmented ligatures were inserted in a patient wearing orthodontic brackets, and zoomed photographs of the smile were taken and presented to 40 evaluators, who filled in a satisfaction scale sheet to express their opinion on the smile aesthetics of each photograph. The color data were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey tests. Results: The substance with the highest pigmentation potential was coffee (p< 0.05) followed by red wine (p< 0.05). Comparison among the brands used in this study showed that American Orthodontics and Orthometric had the lowest degree of pigmentation when immersed in coffee and red wine (p< 0.05), respectively. However, the brand that showed the highest level of satisfaction among the evaluators was Ortho Technology. Conclusions: The presence of pigmented elastomeric ligatures affected smile aesthetics, when compared with the control group.

RESUMO Introdução: O posicionamento vertical dos braquetes ortodônticos dos incisivos superiores influencia diretamente no degrau formado entre esses dentes, podendo interferir na percepção estética do sorriso. Além disso, os padrões estéticos se alteram ao longo do tempo, demandando ajustes nas técnicas para acompanhá-los. Objetivo: O presente estudo analisou as preferências dos ortodontistas em relação à diferença na altura de colagem dos braquetes entre os incisivos centrais superiores (ICS) e os incisivos laterais superiores (ILS) e determinou, ainda, se o sexo do ortodontista, idade e tempo de especialização têm associação com suas escolhas. Métodos: A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de formulário eletrônico incluindo as variáveis sexo, idade e tempo de formação profissional. Em seguida, os participantes analisaram um caso clínico, para o qual indicaram as alturas de colagem dos braquetes que aplicariam, com as opções de 3,0 mm a 5,5 mm da borda incisal, em intervalos de 0,5 mm; ou no centro da coroa clínica (CCC). Os dados foram analisados utilizando-se as diferenças entre as alturas de colagem dos ICS e ILS, refletindo na formação de degraus verticais entre esses dentes. Resultados: Encontrou-se que os profissionais utilizariam a seguinte diferença de altura na colagem dos braquetes de ICS e ILS: 0 mm (3,9%); 0,5 mm (78,3%); 1 mm (7,6%); 1,5 mm (0,2%); e CCC (9,9%). As correlações entre a preferência das alturas de colagem e o sexo, idade e tempo de formado não foram estatisticamente significativas. Conclusão: Na amostra pesquisada, existiu uma preferência pela diferença de altura na colagem entre ICS e ILS de 0,5 mm, sendo que os fatores sexo, idade e tempo de formação não tiveram influência na escolha.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The vertical position of orthodontic brackets in maxillary incisors may influence the incisal step between the anterior teeth and thereby interfere with the smile esthetics. Even so, esthetic standards have been modified over time and consistently required technical adjustments. Objective: This study analyzed orthodontists’ preferences regarding the difference of bracket bonding height between the maxillary central incisors (MCI) and maxillary lateral incisors (MLI), and further determined whether the orthodontist sex, age and time of specialization have association to their choices. Methods: This study collected data through an electronic form. Study participants analyzed a clinical case in which they indicated their preference for bracket bonding height. The placement height options ranged from 3.0 mm to 5.5 mm from the incisal edge, with 0.5-mm intervals, or at the clinical crown center (CCC). The difference in the bonding height between the MCI and MLI was analyzed, considering the formation of incisal steps between these teeth. Results: Participants indicated that the difference in bracket bonding height between the MCI and MLI should be as follows: 0 mm (3.9%); 0.5 mm (78.3%); 1 mm (7.6%); 1.5 mm (0.2%); and CCC (9.9%). There was no statistically significant correlation between the choice for bracket bonding height and sex, age and time since specialization. Conclusion: Most participating orthodontists choose the 0.5-mm difference in bracket placement height between the MCI and MLI. The variables sex, age and time since specialization did not influence this choice.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o impacto do perfil facial nos domínios da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal (QVRSB) de jovens adultos. Métodos: Estudo observacional transversal realizado com 205 jovens adultos, com idade média de 23,1 anos. Os indivíduos responderam questões sobre QVRSB (OHIP-14) e autoestima (Global Negative Self-Evaluation). O Componente de Saúde Bucal (DHC) do Índice de Necessidade de Tratamento Ortodôntico (IOTN) avaliou as necessidades normativas de tratamento ortodôntico e definiu clinicamente a má oclusão dentária. O perfil facial foi analisado por meio de fotografias e dicotomizado em dois níveis: perfil facial normal (reto) e perfil facial alterado (convexo ou côncavo). Um pesquisador calibrado realizou os exames clínicos. A associação entre as variáveis independentes e o desfecho (QVRSB) foi determinada pela análise de regressão linear múltipla hierarquizada para cada domínio do OHIP-14. Considerando a variável de interesse (perfil facial), o domínio incapacidade psicológica foi o item mais afetado. Resultados: Indivíduos com perfil facial alterado tiveram 2,47 (1,04-5,85) vezes mais chances de relatar impacto na incapacidade psicológica do que aqueles com perfil normal (p > 0,05). A associação foi modulada pela má oclusão dentária e a autoestima. Conclusões: O perfil facial alterado (convexo ou côncavo) apresentou impacto negativo nos aspectos psicológicos da qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde bucal de adultos jovens.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the impact of facial profile on young adults’ oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) item levels. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a population-based sample of 205 young adults, with a mean age of 23.1 years. The individuals answered questions about OHRQoL (OHIP-14) and self-esteem (Global Negative Self-Evaluation). The Dental Health Component (DHC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was used to evaluate normative orthodontic treatment needs and define dental malocclusion clinically. Facial profile was analyzed using photographs and dichotomized into two levels: normal (straight) and altered facial profile (convex or concave). A calibrated researcher performed the clinical examination. Association between the independent variables and the outcome (OHRQoL) was established by hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis for each item level. Considering the variable of interest (facial profile), the psychological incapacity domain was the most affected item. Results: Individuals with changed facial profile had 2.47 (1.04-5.85) times higher chances of reporting impacts on psychological incapacity than those with a normal profile (p> 0.05). The association was modulated by dental malocclusion and self-esteem. Conclusions: The convex and concave facial profile showed a negative impact on the psychological aspects of young adults’ quality of life.

Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do padrão de crescimento na espessura do osso cortical alveolar e na estabilidade e taxa de sucesso dos mini-implantes. Métodos: Cinquenta e seis mini-implantes foram inseridos na região vestibular da maxila de trinta pacientes. Esses pacientes foram alocados em dois grupos, com base em seu padrão de crescimento (grupo horizontal [GH] e grupo vertical [GV]). As espessuras corticais foram medidas por meio de tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico. A estabilidade dos mini-implantes, tecido mole no local de inserção, sensibilidade durante a carga e o acúmulo de placa ao redor dos mini-implantes foram avaliados uma vez por mês. As comparações intergrupos foram realizadas por testes t de Student, testes de Mann-Whitney e testes exatos de Fisher. As correlações foram avaliadas com o coeficiente de correlação de Pearson. Resultados: A espessura do osso cortical foi significativamente maior no GH na região vestibular anterior da maxila e nas regiões vestibulares posterior e anterior da mandíbula. Houve uma correlação negativa significativa entre o ângulo do plano mandibular (FMA) e a espessura da cortical vestibular da maxila, e com a espessura das corticais vestibular e lingual da mandíbula. Nenhuma diferença significativa entre os grupos foi encontrada com relação à mobilidade do mini-implante e taxa de sucesso. Nenhum fator associado influenciou a estabilidade dos mini-implantes. Conclusões: O padrão de crescimento afeta a espessura da cortical óssea alveolar em áreas específicas da maxila e mandíbula, com pacientes horizontais apresentando maior espessura da cortical óssea. No entanto, esse fato pode não ter influência na estabilidade e na taxa de sucesso dos mini-implantes na região vestibular posterior da maxila.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Controversial reports suggest a relationship between growth pattern and cortical alveolar bone thickness, and its effect in the use of mini-implants. Objective: The main purpose of this study was to assess the influence of the growth pattern on the cortical alveolar bone thickness and on the stability and success rate of mini-implants. Methods: Fifty-six mini-implants were inserted in the buccal region of the maxilla of 30 patients. These patients were allocated into two groups, based on their growth pattern (horizontal group [HG] and vertical group [VG]). Cortical thickness was measured using Cone Beam Computed Tomography. Stability of mini-implants, soft tissue in the insertion site, sensitivity during loading and plaque around the mini-implants were evaluated once a month. Intergroup comparisons were performed using t tests, Mann-Whitney tests, and Fisher exact tests. Correlations were evaluated with Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: The cortical bone thickness was significantly greater in the HG at the maxillary labial anterior region and at the mandibular buccal posterior and labial anterior regions. There was a significant negative correlation between Frankfort-mandibular plane angle (FMA) and the labial cortical thickness of the maxilla, and with the labial and lingual cortical bone thicknesses of the mandible. No significant intergroup difference was found for mini-implant mobility and success rate. No associated factor influenced stability of the mini-implants. Conclusions: Growth pattern affects the alveolar bone cortical thickness in specific areas of the maxilla and mandible, with horizontal patients presenting greater cortical bone thickness. However, this fact may have no influence on the stability and success rate of mini-implants in the maxillary buccal posterior region.

Resumo No presente estudo foi avaliado o efeito de diferentes métodos de fotoativação e ciclagem térmica na resistência da união ao cisalhamento (RUC) e no índice de remanescente adesivo (IRA) de braquetes metálicos colados à cerâmica feldspática. Cem braquetes metálicos foram colados em 20 cilindros de porcelana, divididos em 4 grupos (n=25) de acordo com o processo de fotoativação e ciclagem térmica. Os cilindros foram condicionados com ácido fluorídrico 10% por 60s e receberam 2 camadas de silano. Os braquetes foram colados com a resina composta Transbond XT. A fotoativação nos Grupos 1 e 3 foi realizada por 3 segundos usando o aparelho VALO Ortho Cordless com irradiância de 3200 mW/cm2 e nos Grupos 2 e 4 por 40 segundos utilizando o aparelho Optilight Max com irradiância de 1200 mW/cm². As amostras foram armazenadas em água deionizada a 37°C por 24 h, após as amostras dos grupos 1 e 2 foram submetidos ao teste de RUC, velocidade de 1 mm/min, e as amostras dos grupos 3 e 4 foram submetidas a 7.000 ciclos térmicos (5°/ 55°C) antes da RUC. Os dados foram submetidos à Análise de Variância dois fatores e ao teste de Tukey (a=0,05). Não foi encontrada diferença significativa entre as médias da RUC nos diferentes aparelhos de fotoativação. Quando submetidos à ciclagem térmica apresentaram menores valores de RUC (p≤0,05). O IRA mostrou predominância de escore 0 para todos os grupos. Conclui-se que os diferentes métodos de fotoativação não interferiram na RUC, porém a ciclagem térmica reduziu a RUC.

Abstract The present study was evaluated the effect of different light activation and thermocycling methods on the shear bond strength (SBS) and on the adhesive remnant index (ARI) of metal brackets bonded to feldspathic ceramic. Hundred metal brackets were bonded to 20 porcelain cylinders, divided into four groups (n=25) based on light activation and thermocycling processes. The cylinders were etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 60 s and coated with two layers of silane. The brackets were bonded with Transbond XT composite resin. Light activation in Groups 1 and 3 was performed during 3 s using the VALO Ortho Cordless appliance with irradiance 3,200 mW/cm2 and in Groups 2 and 4 for 40 s using Optilight Max appliance with irradiance 1,200 mW/cm². The samples were stored in deionized water at 37°C for 24 h and the samples from Groups 1 and 2 were submitted to the SBS test at a rate of 1 mm/min, whereas the samples from Groups 3 and 4 were submitted to 7,000 thermal cycles (5°/55°C) before to the SBS test. The data were assessed by two-way analysis of variance and by Tukey’s test (a=0.05). No significant difference was observed between SBS means in the different light activation devices used. The samples subjected to thermocycling revealed lower SBS values (p≤0.05). There was predominance of score 0 for ARI in all groups. Therefore, the different light activation methods did not interfere in SBS, but thermocycling reduced SBS.

Resumo Introdução Os procedimentos de esterilização e desinfecção devem ser adaptados ao perfil químico das ligas metálicas presentes nos instrumentos. Objetivo O objetivo do estudo foi realizar uma avaliação micrográfica das características da superfície da widia de alicates ortodônticos com duas composições de ligas submetidas à ação de ácido peracético a 0,2% e uso intensivo. Material e método Vinte alicates de corte distal foram divididos em dois grupos (n=10), de acordo com a composição widia (% em peso): W1- 85% a 87% de carboneto de tungstênio e outros componentes na proporção de 13% a 15% e W2 - 87,5% a 88,5% de carboneto de tungstênio e 11,5% a 12,5% para outros componentes. Os alicates foram avaliados em uma lupa estereoscópica (32x) após três tratamentos: antes do uso (T0); após corte de 100 segmentos de fios retangulares de aço inoxidável- uso intensivo (T1); após 100 ciclos de esterilização em ácido peracético a 0,2% e uso intensivo (T2). Os locais de corte dos alicates foram definidos pela linha “A” representando T1 e pela linha “B” representando T2. Foi realizada uma tabela de distribuição de frequências e o teste exato de Fisher (α=0,05). As widias foram avaliadas em MEV e Espectroscopia de Energia Dispersiva. Resultado Os alicates W1 apresentaram defeitos significativamente menores após os ciclos de esterilização com ácido peracético e uso intensivo do que os alicates W2 (p=0,0198). Não houve diferenças entre os dois alicates após uso intensivo (p=1.000). Conclusão As imagens de MEV/EDS mostraram alterações nas superfícies widia após os diferentes tratamentos. A composição widia afetou a resistência do alicate ortodôntico após ciclos de esterilização com ácido peracético a 0,2% e uso intensivo.

Abstract Introduction The sterilization and disinfection procedures should be adapted to the chemical profile of the metal alloys present in the instruments. Objective This study aimed to perform a micrographic assessment on the surface characteristics of the widia of orthodontic pliers with two alloy compositions subjected to the action of 0.2% peracetic acid and intensive use. Material and method Twenty distal cutting pliers were divided into two groups (n=10) according to widia composition (%wt): W1- 85% to 87% of tungsten carbide (TC) and other components in the proportion of 13% to 15% and W2 – 87.5% to 88.5% of tungsten carbide and 11.5% to 12.5% for other components. All the pliers were assessed in a stereoscopic magnifying glass (32x) after three treatments: before use (T0); after cutting 100 segments of rectangular stainless-steel wires – intensive use (T1); and after 100 sterilization cycles in 0.2% peracetic acid and intensive use (T2). The cutting sites of all pliers were standardized. Widia regions were defined by line “A” representing T1 and line “B” representing T2. A frequency distribution table and Fisher’s exact test (α=0.05) was performed. We assessed two widia from each composition and treatment in SEM and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS/SEM). Result The results showed that W1 pliers presented significantly fewer defects after the sterilization cycles with peracetic acid and intensive use than W2 pliers (p=0.0198). There were no differences between both pliers after intensive use (p=1.000). Conclusion The SEM images and EDS analyses showed changes in widia surfaces after the different treatments. Widia composition affected the resistance of the orthodontic pliers after sterilization cycles with 0.2% peracetic acid and intensive use.

Resumo Introdução A agenesia dentária pode afetar a raiz radicular e deve ser considerada no tratamento ortodôntico. Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a associação entre agenesia dentária e a morfologia radicular dos dentes anteriores. Material e método Foram avaliadas em 102 radiografias periapicais dos dentes anteriores de 51 indivíduos divididos em 3 grupos: Grupo 1 (n=16) sem agenesia dentária; Grupo 2 (n=17) com agenesia dentária de terceiros molares; Grupo 3 (n=18) com agenesia dentária apenas de prés-molares ou incisivos laterais. A morfologia radicular dos dentes anteriores foi avaliada sendo classificada como raiz curta, abaulada, tortuosa e pipeta. Para a comparação do formato radicular foi utilizado o teste Exato de Fisher, para a distribuição dos sexos entre os grupos foi realizado o teste qui-quadrado e para comparar as idades entre os grupos foi realizada o teste ANOVA, todas as análises com nível de significância de 5%. Resultado Os resultados evidenciaram diferença significante nos formatos das raízes (P<0,05) entre os grupos com e sem agenesia. O formato radicular abaulado foi o mais prevalente em todos os grupos, aparecendo em maior número no grupo 3 (84,3%). Conclusão Conclui-se que houve associação entre agenesia dentária e a morfologia radicular dos dentes anteriores.

Abstract Introduction Tooth agenesis is likely to affect the root teeth and should be considerated in orthodontic tratament. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the association between agenesis and root morphology of anterior teeth. Material and method The anterior teeth of 51 individuals were evaluated on 102 periapical radiographs and then divided into three groups: Group 1 (n=16) – no tooth agenesis; Group 2 (n=17) – only third molar agenesis; and Group 3 (n=18) – tooth agenesis of premolars or lateral incisors. Root morphology of anterior teeth was evaluated and the roots were classified as short, blunt, apically bent, and pipette-shaped. Fisher’s exact test was used to compare root shapes, the chi-square test was used to obtain the distribution of sexes between the groups, and ANOVA was performed to compare the ages between the groups. The significance level was set at 5% for all analyses. Result There was significant difference in root shapes (P<0.05) between the groups. Blunt roots were the most prevalent in all groups, but their rate was higher in Group 3 (83%). Conclusion There was association between agenesis and root morphology of anterior teeth.

Resumo Introdução A demanda por tratamentos estéticos tem crescido nos últimos anos, sendo cada vez mais forte a preocupação com a estética por parte dos pacientes que buscam o tratamento ortodôntico. Objetivo Este estudo avaliou a resistência à fratura de bráquetes cerâmicos monocristalinos e policristalinos de diferentes fabricantes quando submetidos ao torque do fio. Material e método Sessenta bráquetes cerâmicos (Roth, incisivos centrais superiores direito, canaleta 0,022 x 0,028 polegadas) foram divididos em 2 grupos (30 espécimes por grupo) de acordo com o tipo da cerâmica: monocristalina e policristalina. Posteriomente estes grupos foram divididos em 3 sub-grupos (n=10) de acordo com o fabricante: Orthometric, Eurodonto e Ortho Technology. Segmentos de fio de aço inoxidável retangular (0,019 x 0,025 polegadas) foram dobrados em forma de “U”, sendo que a base do “U” foi inserida na canaleta do bráquete e fixado com fio de amarilho em aço inoxidável (0,008mm). Nas extremidades do “U” foram realizadas dobras verticais para servir de apoio para o cinzel da máquina de ensaio universal Instron. O ensaio de resistência à fratura foi realizado à velocidade de 1,0 mm/min até ocorrer a fratura. Os dados foram registrados, transformados em g.mm e submetidos à ANOVA dois fatores e ao teste de Tukey (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA, version 9.3) (α=5%). Resultado Os bráquetes monocristalinos apresentaram maior resistência à fratura em relação aos policristalinos, independente do fabricante (p<0,05). Os maiores valores de resistência à fratura foram obtidos com os bráquetes da Ortho Technology e Orthometric, os quais não diferiram estatisticamente entre si (p>0,05). Conclusão Bráquetes monocristalinos possuem maior resistência à fratura em relação aos policristalinos com diferenças na resistência à fratura entre os diferentes fabricantes.

Abstract Introduction In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for esthetic treatments, especially among orthodontic patients. Objective This study determined the fracture strength of monocrystalline and polycrystalline ceramic brackets of different manufacturers during archwire torque. Material and method Sixty ceramic brackets (Roth, right upper central incisors, 0.022 x 0.028-inch slot) were allocated into two groups (30 specimens per group) according to the type of ceramics: monocrystalline and polycrystalline. Subsequently, the groups were divided into three subgroups (n = 10) according to the manufacturer: Orthometric, Eurodonto and Ortho Technology. Sixty PVC cylinders were filled with chemically activated acrylic resin (CAAR), the brackets were fixed with CAAR onto the cylinder surface and the excess material was used to partially cover the base of the bracket. After 24h, the U-shaped wire base (0.019 x 0.025 inches; 6 mm height and width) was inserted into the bracket slot and fixed thereon with a stainless-steel wire. Vertical folds were made at the ends of the “U” to support the universal test machine chisel. The fracture strength test was performed at a speed of 1.0 mm/min until fracture into a universal test machine (Instron). The data were recorded, transformed into g.mm and submitted to two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s post-hoc test (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC, USA, version 9.3) (α=5%). Result Monocrystalline brackets showed a higher fracture strength than polycrystalline brackets, regardless of the manufacturer (p<0.05). The highest fracture strength values were observed in Ortho Technology and Orthometric brackets, with no significant difference between them (p>0.05). Conclusion Monocrystalline ceramic brackets have a higher fracture strength than polycrystalline brackets, with significant manufacturer-dependent differences.

Resumo Introdução Este estudo transversal buscou associar resultados cefalométricos normativos do tratamento do retrognatismo mandibular com melhora estética do perfil facial na percepção do paciente. Objetivo este estudo transversal buscou associar resultados cefalométricos normativos do tratamento do retrognatismo mandibular com melhora estética do perfil facial na percepção do paciente. Material e método Os resultados cefalométricos normativos obtidos em radiografias cefalométricas laterais de uma amostra de 24 pacientes com maloclusão de Classe II em fase de crescimento tratados com aparelho de avanço mandibular, foram avaliados comparando-se as grandezas pré e pós-tratamento. As mesmas radiografias foram utilizadas para gerar silhuetas negras padronizadas que foram dispostas aleatoriamente. Os pacientes foram instruídos a escolher seu perfil preferido e indicar quanta mudança foi percebida por meio de uma escala de Likert de 7 pontos. Os dados foram comparados com resultados cefalométricos aplicando-se metodologia de modelos mistos para medidas repetidas no tempo, teste t de student e teste t para variâncias heterogêneas, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultado 75% dos pacientes escolheram silhuetas pós-tratamento e a mudança foi percebida independentemente da escolha por pré ou pós-tratamento. Não houve diferença significativa entre as variáveis cefalométricas dos traçados que deram origem às silhuetas consideradas melhores e piores após a avaliação. Conclusão Não houve associação entre os resultados cefalométricos pós-tratamento e a percepção da melhora estética por pacientes ortodônticos.

Abstract Introduction This cross-sectional study aimed to associate the normative cephalometric results of mandibular retrognathism treatment with patient perception on the esthetic improvement of facial profile. Objective this cross-sectional study aimed to associate the normative cephalometric results of mandibular retrognathism treatment with patient perception on the esthetic improvement of facial profile. Material and method The normative cephalometric results were obtained from lateral cephalometric radiographs of a sample of 24 Class II malocclusion patients in the pubertal growth spurt. Such patients were treated with a mandibular advancement device and evaluated by comparing pre- and post-treatment variables. The same radiographs were used to produce standardized black silhouettes that were randomly arranged. Patients were instructed to choose their preferred profile and indicate the changes perceived using a 7-point Likert scale. The data were compared with cephalometric results using a mixed-model methodology for time-repeated measures, Student’s t-test, and t-test for heterogeneous variances, at 5% significance level. Result A rate of 75% of patients preferred post-treatment silhouettes and changes were perceived regardless of the choice of either pre- or post-treatment profile. There was no significant difference between the cephalometric variables of the tracings that produced the silhouettes considered better or worse after the evaluation. Conclusion There was no association between the cephalometric results after treatment and the perception of esthetic improvement by patients treated for mandibular retrognathia.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the electromyographic activity of the suprahyoid muscles during deglutition in participants with Angle´s Class II malocclusion. Methods: electromyographic data recordings were performed in the supra-hyoid muscles during swallowing and at rest, in 30 volunteers, 15 Angle´s Class I participants and 15 Angle´s Class II malocclusion, aged 15-27 years old. The Root Means Square values for both tests were analyzed, and for the deglutition test, the Linear Envelope was used to observe the type of muscle activation pattern. Results: during the test at rest, there was no significant difference in Root Means Square values (p=0.22) between Class I and Class II subjects. During deglutition, it was found that Angle´s Class II subjects had significantly higher RMS values (p=0.01) as compared to Class I volunteers. Regarding the type of muscle activation pattern, there was a significant difference between Class I and Class II participants with a predominance of type 1 peak for Class I and type 2 peak for Class II. Conclusion: there was a difference in electromyographic recordings during deglutition in participants with Angle´s Class II as compared to Class I participants with a tendency towards two contraction peaks, showing a greater imbalance during the function. There was no difference between groups in the rest position.
