Abstract To investigate how the hydrofluoric acid (HF) concentrations applied to a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (EMX) affects the surface morphology and microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of ceramics to dentin, using light-cured resin cements with or without UDMA. Sixty-three EMX square ceramic blocks were etched for 20 seconds using different HF concentrations (1%, 5% and 10%) and luted to dentin using two types of resin cement combinations: BisGMA/TEGDMA and BisGMA/TEGDMA/UDMA (n = 10). Each bonded EMX-dentin block was sectioned to obtain 1 mm2 sticks for μTBS evaluation. Half of the sticks were tested after 24 hours and the other half was assessed after 6 months of water storage. Data were statistically assessed using split-plot three-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons were performed using the Tukey's post hoc test (α = 0.05). One EMX sample from each HF concentration was analyzed using field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) to characterize the etching pattern. According to the FE-SEM images, increasing the concentration of HF from 1 to 5 and then to 10% led to increased removal of glassy matrix and greater exposure of lithium disilicate crystals. The 10% HF concentration yielded higher μTBS when compared to 1% for BisGMA/TEGDMA formulation (p < 0.05); whereas HF 1% and 5% showed similar μTBS values when compared to 10% HF for BisGMA/TEGDMA/UDMA resin matrix (p > 0.05) at both storage times. Water aging decreased the μTBS values (p < 0.05), except when 10% HF was associated with BisGMA/TEGDMA resin cement. Resin cement formulation and hydrofluoric acid concentrations can interfere with the immediate and long-term glass-ceramic bond strength to dentin.

Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze the efficiency of experimental light-curing resin cements (ERCs) with a ternary photo-initiator system containing diphenyliodonium hexafluorphosphate (DPI) and different amines on retention of glass-fiber posts to dentin (GFP). ERCs formulations: a 1:1 mass ratio of 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxypropoxy)phenylpropane and triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate. Camphorquinone was used as initiator. Six experimental groups were established according to the amine used: [ethyl-4-(dimethylamino)benzoate-EDMAB or 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate-DMAEMA] and the concentration of DPI (0, 0.5 mol%, 1 mol%). The resin cements Variolink II (dual- and light-cured versions) were used as commercial reference. Eighty recently extracted bovine incisors (n = 10) were selected for this study. The roots were prepared and the fiber posts were cemented with the resin cement specified for each experimental group. Specimens from coronal, middle, and apical thirds of the root were subjected to push-out bond strength test 24 hours after bonding. Data were subjected to split-plot ANOVA and the Tukey test (p = 0.05). ERCs containing DPI showed statistically significant higher bond strengths compared with ERCs without DPI. ERCs containing DPI were statistically similar to VARIOLINK II – dual-cured and superior to VARIOLINK II – light-cured (except for EDMAB – 1DPI in the medium third and DMAEMA – 1DPI in the coronal third). Different amines did not influence post retention. The apical root region showed the lowest bond strength for the groups EDAB-0DPI, DMAEMA-0DPI and VARIOLINK II light-cured. Light-cured ERCs containing DPI were efficient for GFP retention to radicular dentin, with similar behaviour to that of dual-curing commercial resin cement.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos das concentrações de ácido fluorídrico (AF) e do prévio tratamento térmico (PTT) na morfologia da superfície e resistência de união ao microcisalhamento (mRUM) de uma cerâmica vítrea de dissilicato de lítio (EMX) ao cimento resinoso. Cento e quatro espécimes de EMX foram aleatoriamente distribuídos em dois grupos (n=52) de acordo com a concentração do AF: 5% e 10%. Os espécimes foram novamente distribuídos de forma aleatória de acordo com o PTT (n=13): controle (sem PTT); AF previamente aquecido (70 °C); superfície do EMX previamente aquecida (85 °C); combinação entre AF e EMX aquecidos. O tempo de condicionamento foi fixado em 20 s. Todos os espécimes de EMX foram silanizados e receberam a aplicação de uma fina camada de um adesivo sem carga. Cinco cilindros de cimento resinoso foram confeccionados usando tubos Tygon como matrizes e então armazenados por 24 h a 37 °C. Uma amostra condicionada de cada grupo foi aleatoriamente selecionada e analisada em um microscópio eletrônico de varredura em emissão de campo (MEVEC). Os dados foram submetidos ao teste ANOVA de dois fatores e múltiplas comparações foram feitas pelo teste de Tukey (a=0.05). Para os grupos controle, AF 5% mostrou valor de mRUM estatisticamente menor do que AF 10% (p<0.05). PTT aumentou os valores de mRUM para o AF 5%, proporcionando resultados estatisticamente similares ao grupo AF 10% controle (p<0.05). MEVEC mostrou um aumento na remoção da matriz vítrea quando o PTT foi aplicado ao grupo AF 5%, no entanto esse efeito não foi visto no grupo AF 10%. O PTT tem o potencial de melhorar a resistência de união do AF 5% na cerâmica vítrea reforçada por disilicato de lítio.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of hydrofluoric acid (HF) concentration and previous heat treatment (PHT) on the surface morphology and micro-shear bond strength (mSBS) of a lithium disilicate glass ceramic (EMX) to resin cement. One hundred four EMX specimens were randomly assigned to two groups (n=52) according to the HF concentration: 5% and 10%. A new random distribution was made according to the PHTs (n=13): control (no PHT); previously heated HF (70 °C); previously heated EMX surface (85 °C); the combination of heated HF + heated EMX surface. The etching time was set at 20 s. All EMX blocks were silanated and received a thin layer of an unfilled resin. Five resin cement cylinders were made on each EMX surface using Tygon tubes as matrices, and then stored for 24 h at 37 °C. One random etched EMX sample from each group was analyzed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The data were subjected to two-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons were performed using the Tukey post hoc test (a=0.05). For the control groups, 5% HF showed statistically lower mSBS values when compared to 10% HF (p<0.05). PHT increased the mSBS values for 5% HF, yielding statistically similar results to non-PHT 10% HF (p<0.05). FE-SEM images showed increased glassy matrix removal when PHT was applied to HF 5%, but not to the same degree as for 10% HF. PHT has the potential to improve the bond strength of 5% HF concentration on lithium disilicate glass ceramic.

Objective This study evaluated the effect of the margin location and an adhesive system on the marginal adaptation of composite restorations. Material and Methods Class V cavities were prepared in bovine teeth with the gingival margin on the dentin and the incisal margin on the enamel. The cavities were restored with a micro-hybrid composite resin using an etch-and-rinse [Single Bond 2 (SB)] or a self-etching adhesive [Clearfil SE Bond (CL)]. After finishing and polishing the restorations, epoxy replicas were prepared. The marginal adaptation was analyzed using scanning electronic microscopy (SEM, 500 x magnification). The higher gap width in each margin was recorded (T0). After the first evaluation, the samples were submitted to thermal cycling (2,000 cycles of 5°C±2°C followed by 55°C±2°C – T1) and mechanical cycling (100,000 cycles of 50 kN and 2 Hz – T2). Replicas of samples were rebuilt after each cycling and analyzed under SEM. The data were submitted to Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon and Friedman testing (α=0.05). Results The SB presented higher gaps in the dentin than the enamel, while there was no difference between the substrate for the CL. In the dentin, the CL showed better marginal sealing than the SB. The opposite occurred in the enamel. There were no significant differences between the baseline, thermal and mechanical cycling for any experimental condition. Conclusions The outcomes of the present study showed that the adhesive system and margin location have an important effect on the marginal adaptation of composite restorations.

Restaurar dentes tratados endodonticamente continua sendo desafio para clínicos. Este estudo avaliou o efeito de pinos e técnicas na deformação, resistência à fratura e padrão de fratura de incisivos com canal radicular alargado. Cento e cinco raízes bovinas, tratadas endodonticamente (15 mm) foram divididas em 7 grupos (n=15). Os grupos controle (C), constituídos de raízes não alargadas, foram restauradas com Cpc (núcleo metálico fundido) ou Gfp (pino de fibra de vidro). Nos grupos experimentais os canais foram alargados (F) e restaurados com: GfpAp (Gfp associado com pinos de fibra de vidro acessórios); GfpRc (pino anatômico, reembasado com resina composta) e GfpRcAp (pino anatomizado com resina composta e pinos acessórios). Os dentes foram restaurados com coroas metálicas. Fadiga mecânica foi simulada com 3x10(5)/50 N ciclos. O teste foi realizado a 45º e a deformação (μS) obtida nas superfícies vestibular e proximal. Em seguida, a resistência à fratura (N) e o padrão de fratura foram verificados. Aplicou-se ANOVA e Teste de Tukey (α=0,05). Não houve diferença na deformação. Cpc resultou em menor resistência à fratura e com mais fraturas catastróficas em raízes fragilizadas. As técnicas de reembasamento do pino com resina composta ou o uso de pinos acessórios parecem ser efetivos para melhorar o comportamento biomecânico de raízes fragilizadas.

Restoring flared endodontically treated teeth continues to be a challenge for clinicians. This study evaluated the effect of post types and restorative techniques on the strain, fracture resistance, and fracture mode of incisors with weakened roots. One hundred five endodontically treated bovine incisors roots (15 mm) were divided into 7 groups (n=15). The two control groups were (C) intact roots restored with Cpc (cast posts and core) or Gfp (glass fiber posts). The five experimental groups were (F) flared roots restored with GfpAp (Gfp associated with accessory glass fiber posts), GfpRc (anatomic Gfp, relined with composite resin), and GfpRcAp (anatomized Gfp with resin and accessory glass fiber posts). All teeth were restored with metal crowns. Mechanical fatigue was performed with 3x10(5)/50 N. Specimens were loaded at 45º, and the strain values (μS) were obtained on root buccal and proximal surfaces. Following that, the fracture resistance (N) was measured. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD tests (α=0.05) were applied, and failure mode was checked. No significant difference in strain values among the groups was found. Cpc presented lower fracture resistance and more catastrophic failures in flared roots. Gfp associated with composite resin or accessory glass fiber posts seems to be an effective method to improve the biomechanical behavior of flared roots.

Este estudo investigou a influência de composições de cerâmica no número de dureza Knoop (KHN), imediatamente e 24 h após a polimerização; e o efeito de modos de ativação na KHN de um cimento resinoso. Dez discos de cimento resinoso Panavia F 2.0 foram ativados diretamente usando uma fonte de luz, ou quimicamente sem luz, ou através de discos de cerâmica com espessura de 1,2 mm. As cerâmicas avaliadas foram Duceram, Cergogold, IPS Empress, IPS Empress 2, Procera, Cercon, In Ceram Alumina e In Ceram Zirconia. O KHN foi obtido nos tempos imediatamente e após 24 h. Os testes ANOVA two-way e Tukey foram realizados para a análise estatística (p<0,05). A ativação direta apresentou maiores KHN que a ativação através das cerâmicas e ativação química, para ambos os tempos testados imediatamente e após 24 h. O KHN para o tempo de ativação testado após 24 h foi superior que o tempo imediatamente, exceto para o modo de ativação direto. As cerâmicas à base de vidro e di-silicato apresentaram KHN superiores que as cerâmicas à base de alumina e zircônia, imediatamente e após 24 h. As cerâmicas mais reforçadas e opacas resultaram um dos menores KHN. A composição da cerâmica resulta em atenuação de luz, menor polimerização e menor KHN; e o tempo de 24 h testado promove uma melhora no KHN, exceto para o modo de ativação direto.

This study investigated the influence of ceramic compositions on Knoop Hardness Number (KHN) immediately and 24 h after polymerization and the effect of activation modes on the KHN of a resin cement. Ten Panavia F 2.0 resin cement discs were activated either directly using curing light, or chemically without light, or through 1.2-thick ceramic discs. The following ceramics were evaluated: Duceram, Cergogold, IPS Empress, IPS Empress 2, Procera, Cercon, In Ceram Alumina and In Ceram Zirconia. The KHN was obtained immediately and after 24-h testing time. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were performed for statistical analysis (p<0.05). Direct activation showed higher KHN than activation through ceramics and chemical activation for both immediate and 24-h post activation. The KHN for 24-h post activation time was higher than that of the immediate post activation time except for the direct activation mode. The glass and di-silicate based ceramics showed higher KHN than alumina- and zirconia-based ceramics, immediately and after 24-h. The reinforced and opaque ceramics had the lowest KHN. The ceramic composition resulted in light attenuation, lower polymerization and lower KHN, and the 24-h testing time promoted an improvement of KHN except for direct activation mode.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a microinfiltração em restaurações diretas e indiretas em resina composta por meio de estereomicroscopia e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV). Trinta incisivos bovinos foram lixados de forma a produzir uma plataforma incisal, simulando a face oclusal de um molar humano. Cada dente recebeu dois preparos proximais com 8º e término cervical em esmalte ou dentina. Uma cavidade foi restaurada pela técnica direta com Filtek Z250/Single Bond, e a outra pela técnica indireta com Solidex/RelyX ARC/Single Bond. As amostras foram armazenadas em água a 37°C por 24 horas e então imersas em solução de 50% de nitrato de prata por 6 horas em recipiente escuro. As amostras foram lavadas em água corrente, imersas em solução reveladora e expostas à luz fluorescente por 12 horas. Os dentes foram seccionados para avaliação da penetração do marcador em lupa estereoscópica e MEV. Não houve diferença entre as técnicas direta e indireta para o término em esmalte, porém, para o término em dentina, a técnica indireta resultou em menor infiltração. MEV mostrou infiltração similar à da lupa estereoscópica. A análise por meio de lupa estereoscópica e MEV melhora a avaliação da microinfiltração.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of direct and indirect composite inlays by stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Thirty bovine incisors were ground to obtain an incisal platform, simulating the occlusal surface of a human molar. Each tooth received two 8° proximal cavities with cervical finishing line prepared in dentine or enamel. One of the cavities was filled with Filtek Z250/Single Bond, using the direct technique, and the other was filled with with Solidex/Rely X ARC/Single Bond, using the indirect technique. The samples were stored in water at 37°C for 24 hours and placed in a 50% silver nitrate solution for 6 hours in a dark container. Next, the samples were washed under running water, immersed in a developing solution and exposed to fluorescent light for 12 hours. The teeth were then severed and evaluated for dye penetration by stereomicroscopy and SEM. There were no significant differences between the direct and indirect techniques for the cervical finishing line in enamel, but for the finishing line in dentin, the indirect technique allowed less microleakage than the direct technique. SEM analysis showed leakage similar to that observed by stereomicroscopic analysis. The use of stereomicroscopic and SEM evaluations improves microleakage analysis.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência do material de inclusão e da simulação de ligamento periodontal na resistência à fratura de dentes bovinos. Oitenta incisivos bovinos foram divididos em 8 grupos (n = 10) e, então, incluídos em cilindros com dois materiais, resina acrílica ou resina de poliestireno, usando-se quatro tipos de simulação do ligamento periodontal: 1 - ausência do ligamento; 2 - material de moldagem à base de poliéter; 3 - material de moldagem à base de polissulfeto; e 4 - material elastomérico à base de poliuretano. As amostras foram armazenadas em 100% de umidade a 37°C por 24 horas e então submetidas a carregamento tangencial na superfície palatina com velocidade de 0,5 mm/minuto até a fratura. Os padrões de fratura foram analisados de acordo com: 1 - fraturas coronais; 2 - fratura da junção esmalte-cemento; 3 - fratura parcial da raiz; 4 - fratura radicular total. A análise estatística empregou análise de variância fatorial e teste de Tukey (p < 0,05). Os resultados mostram que o método de inclusão e a simulação do ligamento periodontal tiveram efeito significativo na resistência à fratura. O ligamento periodontal artificial modificou os padrões de fratura.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the embedment material and periodontal ligament simulation on fracture resistance of bovine teeth. Eighty bovine incisor teeth were randomized into 8 groups (n = 10), embedded in acrylic or polystyrene resin using 4 types of periodontal ligament simulation: 1 - absence of the ligament; 2 - polyether impression material; 3 - polysulfide impression material; 4 - polyurethane elastomeric material. The specimens were stored at 37°C and 100% humidity for 24 hours. Specimens were submitted to tangential load on the palatal surface at 0.5 mm/minute crosshead speed until fracture. The fracture modes were analyzed as follows: 1 - coronal fracture; 2 - cemento-enamel junction fracture; 3 - partial root fracture; 4 - total root fracture. Statistical analyses by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were applied (p < 0.05). The results showed that root embedment method and periodontal ligament simulation have a significant effect on fracture resistance. Artificial periodontal ligament modified the fracture modes.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência de diferentes tratamentos de superfície na resistência de união de resinas compostas a um agente de fixação resinoso. Dois compósitos de laboratório, Solidex e Targis, e um compósito convencional, Filtek Z250, foram testados. Quarenta e oito blocos de resina composta (5.0 x 5.0 x 5.0mm) foram confeccionados através da técnica incremental, para cada compósito testado, e foram aleatoriamente divididos em 6 grupos. Os blocos foram submetidos a seis tratamentos de superfície: 1 - Controle, Lixa 600-SiC (C); 2 - Silanização (SI); 3 - Jateamento com Al2O3 50µm por 10 segundos (SA); 4 - Condicionamento com ácido fluorídrico por 60 segundos (HF); 5 - HF + SI; 6 - SA + SI. Blocos submetidos ao mesmo tratamento foram unidos com o agente de fixação resinoso Rely X. Uma carga de 500g foi aplicada por 5 minutos e as amostras foram fotoativadas por 40 segundos. Os blocos unidos foram seccionados em fatias de 0.9mm de espessura perpendicularmente à interface de união (n = 12). Foram realizadas constrições limitando a interface de união a 1mm e as amostras foram levadas para o ensaio de tração. As maiores médias de união foram obtidas para as amostras submetidas à aplicação do silano após o jateamento com Al2O3.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of different surface treatments on composite resin on the microtensile bond strength to a luting resin cement. Two laboratory composites for indirect restorations, Solidex and Targis, and a conventional composite, Filtek Z250, were tested. Forty-eight composite resin blocks (5.0 x 5.0 x 5.0mm) were incrementally manufactured, which were randomly divided into six groups, according to the surface treatments: 1- control, 600-grit SiC paper (C); 2- silane priming (SI); 3- sandblasting with 50 mm Al2O3 for 10s (SA); 4- etching with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 60 s (HF); 5- HF + SI; 6 - SA + SI. Composite blocks submitted to similar surface treatments were bonded together with the resin adhesive Single Bond and Rely X luting composite. A 500-g load was applied for 5 minutes and the samples were light-cured for 40s. The bonded blocks were serially sectioned into 3 slabs with 0.9mm of thickness perpendicularly to the bonded interface (n = 12). Slabs were trimmed to a dumbbell shape and tested in tension at 0.5mm/min. For all composites tested, the application of a silane primer after sandblasting provided the highest bond strength means.

O propósito deste estudo in vitro foi avaliar em diferentes tempos a rugosidade superficial do esmalte dental humano clareado com peróxido de carbamida a 35% e submetido a diferentes tratamentos superficiais de limpeza: G1 - não escovado; G2 - escovado com dentifrício fluoretado abrasivo; G3 - escovado com dentifrício não fluoretado abrasivo; G4 - escovado sem dentifrício. Sessenta fragmentos de molares humanos com 4 x 4 mm foram obtidos através do seccionamento com discos diamantados. Os espécimes foram polidos com lixas e pastas abrasivas. Um perfilômetro foi utilizado para determinar os valores da média de dureza Ra ("roughness average") iniciais e a cada intervalo de 7 dias após o início do tratamento clareador. O clareamento foi realizado na superfície dos fragmentos por 1 hora semanalmente, e os tratamentos superficiais, por 3 minutos diariamente. No restante do tempo, os espécimes eram armazenados em receptáculos individuais com saliva artificial. A análise de variância e o teste de Tukey revelaram diferenças estatísticas significantes na rugosidade superficial em função do tempo. G2 e G3 demonstraram um aumento nos valores de rugosidade; G1 e G4 não apresentaram diferenças estatísticas. O clareamento com peróxido de carbamida a 35% não altera a rugosidade superficial do esmalte humano, mas, quando associado ao tratamento superficial com abrasivos, ocorre um aumento significante da rugosidade superficial.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the surface roughness of human enamel bleached with 35% carbamide peroxide at different times and submitted to different superficial cleaning treatments: G1 - not brushed; G2 - brushed with fluoride abrasive dentifrice; G3 - brushed with a non-fluoride abrasive dentifrice; G4 - brushed without dentifrice. Sixty fragments of human molar teeth with 4 x 4 mm were obtained using a diamond disc. The specimens were polished with sandpaper and abrasive pastes. A perfilometer was used to measure roughness average (Ra) values of the initial surface roughness and at each 7-day-interval after the beginning of treatment. The bleaching was performed on the surface of the fragments for 1 hour a week, and the surface cleaning treatment for 3 minutes daily. The samples were stored in individual receptacles with artificial saliva. Analysis of variance and the Tukey test revealed significant differences in surface roughness values for G2 and G3, which showed an increase in roughness over time; G1 and G4 showed no significant roughness differences. The bleaching with 35% carbamide peroxide did not alter the enamel surface roughness, but when the bleaching treatment was performed combined with brushing with abrasive dentifrices, there was a significant increase in roughness values.
