Infections in fruits caused by fungi reduce the quantity and quality of food for human consumption, in addition to causing economic losses. In this sense, this study aimed to address the effects of eugenol nanocapsules (NCs) based on chitosan and carboxymethylcellulose in protecting nectarines against Monilinia fructicola, a brown rot agent, a worldwide important disease. NCs were prepared by layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly starting from an anionic template and deposition with up to two polymeric layers. The hydrodynamic diameters ranged from 158 nm (nanoemulsion), 360 nm (one polymeric layer) to 398 nm (two polymeric layers). NCs presented, during the in vitro release, the release of eugenol following a first order process. In addition to being in the region of stability (zeta potential ca. |30| mV), the capsules showed good adhesion to the nectarine surface. In relation to brown rot, the eugenol NCs with chitosan proved to be the best formulation compared to nanoemulsion and NCs with two polymeric layers for its control, increasing the probability that the fruits remain without symptoms, even after 7 days. Asymmetric addition of organozinc compounds to carbonyl groups is one of the most useful methods for the synthesis of alcohols with high enantioselectivity. There is a wide range of chiral catalysts, although their synthesis requires more than one step and not often readily available starting materials. In this work, chiral β-hydroxy oxazolines derived from (+)-camphor and (-)-fenchone were easily synthesized through a one-step method, with good yields. Both ligands were evaluated as catalysts for the stereoselective addition of diethylzinc to aromatic aldehydes. All ligands showed good catalytic activity, leading both to the preparation of the R enantiomer of chiral secondary alcohols. Three new dibenzoylmethane derivatives, (E)-3,4-methylenedioxy-2'-methoxy-2'',2''-dimethylpyrano-(5'',6'':3',4')-7-methoxychalcone, 2'-hydroxy-5'(3'''',3''''-dimethylallyl)-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)-furano-(4'',5'':3'4')-dibenzoylmethane and 2'-O-(3'',3''-dimethylallyl)-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)-furano-(4'',5'':3'4')-dibenzoylmethane, were isolated from a dichloromethane extract from the root bark of Muellera filipes (Benth.) M.J. Silva & A.M.G. Azevedo, along with two dibenzoylmethane derivatives, 2'-methoxy-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)-furano-(4'',5'':3',4')-dibenzoylmethane and 2'-hydroxy-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)-2",2"-dimethylpyrano-(5",6":3',4')-dibenzoylmethane; one flavanone, isolonchocarpin and one flavone, pongaglabrone, which had been previously isolated from other sources. The molecular structures of the new dibenzoylmethane derivatives were determined by analysis of their spectral data (1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 2D-NMR, NOE (nuclear Overhauser effect) and HRMS (high resolution mass spectrometry). β-Hidroxi-2-oxazolinas quirais foram sintetizadas e avaliadas como catalisadores na adição de dietilzinco a aldeídos. Todas as oxazolinas se mostraram eficientes na obtenção dos produtos de adição. Os melhores excessos enantioméricos (69 a 78%) foram obtidos quando se empregou a β-hidroxi oxazolina quiral derivada da (−)-mentona e do amino álcool 2-amino-2-metilpropan-1-ol.

Chiral β-hydroxy-2-oxazolines were synthesized and evaluated as catalysts for the addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. All oxazolines proved effective in obtaining the addition products. O estudo fitoquímico das raízes de Dahlstedtia glaziovii (Fabaceae) forneceu um novo dibenzoilmetano (glaziovione), juntamente com dezoito compostos conhecidos. Suas estruturas foram determinadas através de métodos espectroscópicos de ressonância magnética nuclear (NMR) 1D e 2D (correlação heteronuclear única quântica, HSQC, e correlação heteronuclear de múltipla ligação, HMBC) e espectrometria de massas de alta resolução (HRMS). A atividade antiproliferativa foi investigada para os extratos, para os dibenzoilmetanos 2'-metóxi-8-(α-α-dimetilalil)-furano-[4",5":3',4']-dibenzoilmetano, 3,4-metilenodioxi-2'-metóxi-8-(α-α-dimetilalil)-furano-[4",5":3',4']-dibenzoilmetano e pongamol, e para as flavonas lanceolatina B, karanjina, pongapina e 3',4'-metilenodioxi-2",2"-dimetilpirano-[5",6":8,7]-flavona. Os dibenzoilmetanos foram mais ativos do que as flavonas. A atividade antimicrobiana foi investigada para os extratos, sendo que estes não se apresentaram ativos.

A phytochemical study of roots of Dahlstedtia glaziovii (Fabaceae) furnished a new dibenzoylmethane (glaziovione), along with eighteen known compounds. Their structures were determined through 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) (heteronuclear single quantum coherence, HSQC, and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation, HMBC) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) spectral analyses. The antiproliferative activity was investigated for the crude extracts, the dibenzoylmethanes 2'-methoxy-8-(α-α-dimethylallyl)-furano-[4",5":3',4']-dibenzoylmethane, 3,4-methylenedioxy-2'-methoxy-8-(α-α-dimethylallyl)-furano-[4",5":3',4']-dibenzoylmethane and pongamol, and the flavones lanceolatin B, karanjin, pongapin and 3',4'-methylenedioxy-2",2"-dimethylpyrano-[5",6":8,7]-flavone. The dibenzoylmethanes were more active than the flavones.The extracts were evaluated for their antimicrobial effects, but none was shown to be active.

Noctuids are phytophagous lepidopterans with some species causing significant damage to agriculture. The host plants, in turn, have developed defense mechanisms to cope with them, for instance chemical defenses. In this study we review the literature on plant volatiles induced by noctuids, and discuss the methodologies used to induce the production of volatiles that are usually employed in plant defense mechanisms. Future prospects involving this line of research in pest control are also discussed.

A investigação fitoquímica das folhas de Guatteria friesiana (Annonaceae) levou à obtenção de três novos alcaloides isoquinolínicos, 13-hidroxi-discretinina, 6,6a-desidroguateriopsiscina e 9-desidroxi-1-metoxi-diidroguattouregidina, juntamente com oito alcaloides conhecidos, 13-hidroxi-2,3,9,10-tetrametoxiprotoberberina, guateriopsiscina, lisicamina, liriodenina, aterospermidina, lanuginosina, 7,8-diidro-8-hidroxipalmatina e palmatina. 13-Hidroxi-2,3,9,10-tetrametoxiprotoberberina, obtido somente através de síntese, é relatada pela primeira vez como produto natural. As estruturas dos alcaloides isolados foram elucidadas por extensivas análises de ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN 1D e 2D), espectrometria de massas (MS) e comparação com os dados descritos na literatura. A atividade citotóxica in vitro dos alcaloides majoritários foi avaliada frente a linhagens de células tumorais e não tumorais. Considerando a atividade média, de acordo com os critérios do National Cancer Institute (NCI/EUA), todos os alcaloides avaliados foram inativos. Entretanto, o alcaloide palmatina apresentou efeito citostático para as linhagens MCF-7 (mama) e U251 (glioma) com valores de GI50 abaixo de 20,0 µmol L-1 (10,5 e 16,2 µmol L-1, respectivamente), sugerindo uma ação citotóxica seletiva.

Phytochemical investigation of the leaves of Guatteria friesiana (Annonaceae) afforded three new isoquinoline alkaloids, 13-hydroxy-discretinine, 6,6a-dehydroguatteriopsiscine and 9-dehydroxy-1-methoxy-dihydroguattouregidine. Eight known alkaloids were also isolated, 13-hydroxy-2,3,9,10-tetramethoxyprotoberberine, guatteriopsiscine, lysicamine, liriodenine, atherospermidine, lanuginosine, 7,8-dihydro-8-hydroxypalmatine and palmatine. 13-Hydroxy-2,3,9,10-tetramethoxyprotoberberine was only obtained by synthesis and is being reported as a natural product for the first time. The structures of the isolated alkaloids were established by extensive analysis of 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectrometric (MS) data, as well as by comparison with data reported in the literature. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of the major alkaloids was evaluated against tumor and non-tumor cell lines. All of the alkaloids evaluated were determined to be inactive based on National Cancer Institute (NCI/USA) criteria. However, the alkaloid palmatine exhibited a cytostatic effect on MCF-7 (breast) and U251 (glioma) human tumor cell lines, with GI50 values lower than 20.0 µmol L-1 (10.5 and 16.2 µmol L-1, respectively), suggesting a selective cytotoxic action.

A composição dos voláteis emitidos por diferentes árvores é usada com sucesso como marcador em uma grande variedade de estudos, como a quimiotaxonomia. A caracterização dos voláteis emitidos por diferentes espécies de Pinus provou ser uma ferramenta importante para entender o processo de seleção de plantas hospedeiras por insetos herbívoros. Os voláteis dos galhos de cinco espécies de Pinus (P. caribaea, P. elliottii, P. maximinoi, P. patula e P. taeda) foram coletados por aeração e analisados por cromatografia gasosa com detector de ionização de chama (GC-FID), utilizando colunas de fase não-polar e quiral, e espectrometria de massas (GC-MS) com analisador de quadrupolo. A composição relativa foi usada para análises de componentes principais (PCA) e de agrupamento hierárquico (HCA) para a discriminação das cinco espécies.

The composition of the volatiles emitted by different trees has been successfully used as a marker in a wide variety of studies, such as chemotaxonomy. Characterization of the volatiles emitted by different species of Pinus has proven to be an important tool to understand the process of host-tree selection by herbivorous insects. The volatiles present in samples of the branches of five species of Pinus (P. caribaea, P. elliottii, P. maximinoi, P. patula and P. taeda) were collected by aeration, and the contents analyzed by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector (GC-FID), applying non-polar and chiral column phases, and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using a quadrupole mass analyzer. The relative composition of the different volatiles was used to perform a discriminant analysis among the five pine species, by means of cluster (HCA) and principal component (PCA) analyses.

A investigação fitoquímica dos frutos maduros de Solanum caavurana Vell. (Solanaceae) forneceu um novo alcaloide esteroidal do tipo espirosolano, caavuranamida, juntamente com os alcaloides 4-tomatiden-3-ona e 5α-tomatidan-3-ona. Suas estruturas foram elucidadas através de métodos espectroscópicos. As atividades antiproliferativa e antimicrobiana para o extrato etanólico e subfrações provenientes de partição e de extração ácido-base foram investigadas. A caavuranamida apresentou atividade antibacteriana similar ao controle positivo cloranfenicol contra Rhodococcus equi.

Phytochemical investigation of the ripe fruits of Solanum caavurana Vell. (Solanaceae) afforded a novel steroidal alkaloid with spirosolane-type skeleton, named as caavuranamide, together with the alkaloids 4-tomatiden-3-one and 5α-tomatidan-3-one. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods. The antiproliferative and antimicrobial activities for the ethanolic extract, sub-fractions obtained from partition and acid-base treatment were also evaluated. Caavuranamide showed antibacterial activity similar to the chloramphenicol positive control against Rhodococcus equi.

Se evalúan productos de origen vegetal en busca de sustancias bioactivas que tengan la capacidad de reducir la dependencia de insecticidas organofosforados y piretroides, a los que las poblaciones de insectos se han vuelto resistentes. Por esta razón el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar si los aceites esenciales de Guatteria hispida, G. blepharophylla y G. friesiana presentan efecto insecticida contra A. aegypti bajo condiciones de laboratorio. Los aceites esenciales se extrajeron a través de hidrodestilación por medio de un aparato tipo Clevenger, analizados por Cromatografía Gaseosa acoplada a Espectrometría de Masas (CG-EM) y Resonancia Magnética Nuclear (RMN). Los bioensa-yos se analizaron de acuerdo con el modelo Probit. Los análisis de (CG-EM) y (RMN) confrmaron que las hojas de G. blepharophylla presentan óxido de cariofileno como el principal componente; en G. friesiana fue a-, b- y g-eudesmol, y en G. hispida a- y b-pineno y (E)-cariofileno fueron los compuestos predominantes. La concentraciones letales CL50, CL95 y CL99 fueron respectivamente 85,74, 199,35 y 282,76ppm para G. hispida; 58.72, 107.6 y 138.37 ppm para G. blepharophylla; 52,6, 94,37 y 120,22ppm para G. friesiana. El aceite extraído de G. friesiana presentó el mejor efecto insecticida.

the products of vegetal origin were assessed for bioactive substances to reduce reliance on organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides, to which insect populations have become resistant. For this reason the aim of this study was to assess whether the essential oils of Guatteria hispida, G. blepharophylla and G. friesiana have insecticidal effect against A. aegypti under laboratory conditions. Essential oils were extracted through hydrodistillation using a modifed Clevenger apparatus and analyzed by Gas Chromatography (CG-FID), Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spec-trometry (GC-MS), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). the bioassays were analyzed according to the Probit model. The GC-MS and NMR analyses confrmed that the leaves of G. blepharophylla have the caryophyllene oxide as their main component; in G. friesiana the a-,b- and g-eudesmols prevail, and in G. hispida a- and b-pinene, and (E)-caryophyllene are the predominant compounds. the lethal concentrations LC50, LC95 and LC99, were respectively 85.74, 199.35 and 282.76ppm for G. hispida; 58.72, 107.6 and 138.37ppm for G. blepharophylla; and 52.6, 94.37 and 120.22ppm for G. friesiana. the oil extracted from G. friesiana presented the best insecticidal effect.

O gorgulho-da-casca-do-pinus, Pissodes castaneus (De Geer, 1775) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) é uma praga florestal que foi detectada no Brasil em 2001 e atualmente se encontra distribuída nos três estados da Região Sul, causando grande preocupação para o setor florestal. Os objetivos deste estudo foram isolar, identificar e avaliar a atividade comportamental dos voláteis produzidos pelos machos de P. castaneus. Nossos resultados indicam que a comunicação entre indivíduos desta espécie é mediada por feromônios, o que foi evidenciado pela atração significativa de fêmeas pelos voláteis produzidos pelos machos. Testes comportamentais realizados com os insetos e sua planta hospedeira, Pinus taeda, indicam que os compostos produzidos pelos machos atuam como feromônios sexuais e que os compostos liberados pela planta hospedeira não aumentam a atividade destes compostos. Os compostos produzidos pelos machos de P. castaneus foram identificados como (1R, 2S)-grandisal e (1R, 2S)-grandisol, em excesso enantiomérico superior a 95%.

The banded pine weevil, Pissodes castaneus (De Geer, 1775) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) is a forest pest recorded in Brazil since 2001, which is already distributed in the three states of the Southern Region, causing great concern to the forestry sector. Objectives of our study were to isolate, identify, and assess the behavioral activity of male-produced volatiles of P. castaneus. Our results indicate that communication between conspecifics of P. castaneus is mediated by pheromones, as verified by the significant attraction of females to male-produced volatiles. Behavioral tests performed with the insects and the host plant, Pinus taeda, showed that male-produced compounds may act as sex pheromones and that the compounds released by the host plant did not enhance the activity of the male-produced volatiles. The chemical structures of the male specific volatile compounds produced by P. castaneus were determined to be (1R, 2S)-grandisal and (1R, 2S)-grandisol in an enantiomeric excess exceeding 95%.

A seleção de locais adequados pelas fêmeas de mosquitos para depositarem seus ovos é um fator chave para a sobrevivência de seus imaturos (ovos e larvas). O conhecimento das relações ecológicas implicadas neste processo é de grande importância quando se refere a vetores de agentes patogênicos. A determinação do local de oviposição pelas fêmeas grávidas envolve uma rede de mensagens químicas, visuais, olfativas e táteis que facilitam a localização de lugares adequados para depositarem seus ovos. Neste trabalho é apresentada uma revisão bibliográfica dos principais aspectos relacionados com semioquímicos presentes na oviposição dos mosquitos auxiliando no entendimento dos mecanismos de atuação dos mesmos e potencializando a aplicação destes semioquímicos como uma possível ferramenta de monitoramento e controle de Culicidae.

The choice for suitable places for female mosquitoes to lay eggs is a key-factor for the survival of immature stages (eggs and larvae). This knowledge stands out in importance concerning the control of disease vectors. The selection of a place for oviposition requires a set of chemical, visual, olfactory and tactile cues that interact with the female before laying eggs, helping the localization of adequate sites for oviposition. The present paper presents a bibliographic revision on the main aspects of semiochemicals in regard to mosquitoes' oviposition, aiding the comprehension of their mechanisms and estimation of their potential as a tool for the monitoring and control of the Culicidae.

The phytochemical investigation of dichloromethane extract from root bark of Lonchocarpus filipes Benth (Leguminosae) afforded four flavonoids including three dibenzoylmethane derivatives rarely found in nature. The structures were established based on their spectral data (¹H and 13C NMR, 2D-NMR) as being: lanceolatin B (1), pongamol (2), (E)-7-O-methylpongamol (3) and (E)-9-O-methylpongamol (4). Compound (4) is described herein for the first time as a natural product. The extracts and the isolated compounds (1), (2) and (3) displayed high toxicity in the brine shrimp lethality assay. Only compound (2) showed antioxidant activity using a DPPH radical scavenging assay. This is the first report on the phytochemical study of Lonchocarpus filipes.

Os conteúdos das glândulas metatorácicas de insetos adultos do percevejo Dichelops melacanthus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) foram analisados. Os compostos de defesa foram identificados combinando as técnicas de cromatografia gasosa (CG), cromatografia gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massas (CG-EM) e por comparação de seus índices de retenção com os de compostos padrões. Tridecano foi o componente majoritário, seguido de quantidades menores e aproximadamente iguais de (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal e (E)-2-octenal. Também foram identificados (E)-2-hexenal, decano, acetato de (E)-2-hexenila, undecano, (E)-4-oxo-2-octenal, dodecano, acetato de (E)-2-octenila, 1-trideceno, tetradecano e pentadecano.

The contents of metathoracic glands of adults of the stink bug Dichelops melacanthus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) were analyzed. Compounds were identified by gas chromatography (GC), coupled GC-mass spectrometry and matching retention indices and mass spectra with those of authentic samples. Tridecane was the major component followed by lesser and approximately equal amounts of (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal and (E)-2-octenal. Other compounds identified include (E)-2-hexenal, decane, (E)-2-hexenyl acetate, undecane, (E)-4-oxo-2-octenal, dodecane, (E)-2-octenyl acetate, 1-tridecene, tetradecane and pentadecane.

As respostas de Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) para armadilhas com adultos foram estudadas como sugestão da produção de feromônio. Inicialmente, um ensaio para estabelecer a altura adequada para colocação de armadilhas para capturar D. speciosa foi conduzido em campo de feijão. Armadilhas colocadas a 0,25 m de altura capturaram cerca de 3,5 vezes mais adultos do que a 0,5; 0,75 e 1,0 m. As respostas para fêmeas e machos virgens de duas idades (mais novos = 24 a 72h e mais velhos = 72 a 120h após emergência de adultos), fêmeas e machos copulados foram avaliadas em campo de feijão consorciado com café, Coffea arabica L. Armadilhas com fêmeas virgens capturaram cerca de 22 (mais jovens) e 13 vezes (mais velhas) mais adultos machos do que as testemunhas (armadilhas sem insetos). Capturas foram cerca de 70% mais efetivas usando fêmeas mais jovens. Nenhum dos outros tratamentos aumentou as capturas nas armadilhas. Os resultados indicam que há um feromônio sexual produzido por fêmeas em D. speciosa.

The field responses of Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) to traps baited with adults were studied as an suggestion of the pheromone production. Firstly, an assay to settle a suitable height placement to capture D. speciosa was carried out in common beans, Phaseolus vulgaris L., field. Traps placed at 0.25-m height captured ca. 3.5 times more beetles than 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0-m traps. The responses to virgin females and males of two ages (younger = 24 to 72h and older = 72 to 120h after adult emergence), mated females and males were assessed in common bean interplanted among coffee, Coffea arabica L., field. Virgin females baited traps captured ca. 22 times (younger) and 13 times (older females) more male beetles than control traps. Captures were ca. 70% more effective using younger females. None of the other treatments improved trap attraction. These results strongly indicated that there is a female-produced sexual pheromone in D. speciosa.
