Abstract Although the Brazilian Solid Waste Policy is in force, cities continue to face difficulties in complying with it, thus perpetuating negative environmental impacts caused by solid waste. This study analyzed, from a cartographic perspective, the deficits and the implications of inadequate urban solid waste management in an area of the Brazilian northeast. A questionnaire structured in 3 sections and 26 questions (management of public cleaning services, waste collection, and solid waste disposal) was applied to eight managers of the municipal agencies responsible for solid waste areas. The quality index of landfills was applied, and the gravimetric characterization of solid waste was performed by the technique of quartering and segregation of waste in visits to the disposal sites of each city. It was identified that 75% of the cities do not have hierarchical strategies for prevention, reduction, reuse, recycling, and adequate treatment of urban solid waste, with insufficient budget. Only one city collects throughout its perimeter, and the waste collected is destined to open dumps considered inadequate or of low quality. The waste mass is composed, on average, of 50% organics, 20% rejects, 15% plastics, and 9% paper and cardboard. Resumo Embora a Política Brasileira de Resíduos Sólidos esteja em vigor, as cidades continuam enfrentando dificuldades para cumpri-la, perpetuando assim os impactos ambientais negativos causados pelos resíduos sólidos. Ou seja, o Brasil já está lidando com essa questão, mas o processo está longe de ser bem-sucedido. Este estudo analisa, com base em uma perspectiva cartográfica, os déficits dessa gestão e as implicações da gestão inadequada dos resíduos sólidos urbanos no nordeste brasileiro. Analisamos as estruturas dos órgãos municipais responsáveis pela coleta, transporte e destinação de resíduos sólidos por meio de entrevistas estruturadas com gestores ambientais, avaliação da qualidade dos locais de disposição final e caracterização gravimétrica dos resíduos sólidos. Os dados comprovam que 75% dos municípios não possuem estratégias hierarquizadas de prevenção, redução, reaproveitamento, reciclagem e tratamento ambientalmente adequado dos resíduos sólidos urbanos, que são dispostos em lixões a céu aberto. A matéria orgânica compõe, em média, 50% da massa de resíduos coletados nas cidades, tendo potencial de geração de renda com a aplicação de tecnologias de reciclagem. A autocorrelação espacial indicou relação negativa e fraca entre as variáveis. Resumo O estudo objetivou subsidiar metodologicamente a análise socioambiental espacial de bacias hidrográficas, a partir do uso de dados secundários sociais, econômicos e ambientais na bacia hidrográfica do rio Una, Ibiúna, São Paulo. Realizou-se a triagem de dados secundários, analisados por meio da correlação de Pearson, da regressão linear múltipla e do indicador de qualidade socioambiental espacializado. Houve forte correlação entre as características econômicas dos domicílios e de seus ocupantes com o saneamento ambiental. O índice de qualidade revelou melhores condições socioambientais na zona urbana, contribuindo para a identificação de áreas com necessidade de intervenção que incluem a área rural, por trata-se de locais com relevantes interesses sociais, econômicos e de conservação dos recursos hidricos.

Abstract The study aimed to methodologically subsidize the socioenvironmental analysis of river basins, based on the use of secondary social, economic and environmental data in the Una river basin, Ibiúna, São Paulo, Brasil. Secondary data were screened, using Pearson’s correlation, multiple linear regression, and a spatial socio-environmental quality index. There was a strong correlation between the economic characteristics of households and their occupants with environmental sanitation. The quality index revealed better socio-environmental conditions in the urban area, contributing to the identification of areas requiring intervention that include the rural area, because these are sites with relevant social, economic and conservation interests of water resources.

Resumo As interferências antrópicas sempre provocaram grandes impactos na superfície terrestre, com maior intensidade nos últimos tempos em função das mudanças do uso da terra, que contribuem para emissão dos gases do efeito estufa, em especial do dióxido de carbono. Neste sentido, o estudo objetivou analisar as transições do uso da terra e as emissões de CO2 resultantes dessas ações em uma bacia hidrográfica. Para isto realizou-se mapeamentos de uso da terra de 2007, 2010, 2013 e 2016, como também estimou as emissões decorrentes das transições. Para o cálculo das emissões líquidas de CO2 foram utilizados dados das transições que ocorreram, da vegetação pretérita e informações pedológicas. Todos os procedimentos foram realizados com auxílio de técnicas de geoprocessamento e sensoriamento remoto, resultando em matrizes de transições e de emissões do CO2, além das informações espacializadas. Observou-se que a categoria floresta apresentou a maior conversão para outros tipos de uso da terra, destacando-se uma perda de 208,86 ha entre 2010 a 2013. Em relação as emissões, verificaram-se que em nove anos ocorreram mais emissões do que sequestro de carbono da atmosfera, o que mostra a necessidade de medidas de gestão e planejamento que visem a amenização dos impactos ocasionados pela intensa modificações de uso terra na bacia estudada.

Abstract Anthropogenic interference has always impacted the Earth's surface, with greater intensity in recent times due to land use changes, which contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide. In this sense, this study analyzes land use transitions and CO2 emissions resulting from these actions in a watershed. For this, land use mappings were made in 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016, along with estimates of the emissions from transitions. The calculation of net CO2 emissions included data from the transitions that occurred, from past vegetation, and pedological information. All procedures were performed with the aid of geoprocessing and remote sensing techniques, resulting in matrices of transitions and CO2 emissions, in addition to spatialized information. The forest category showed the highest conversion to other types of land use, with a loss of 208.86 ha between 2010 and 2013. In the observed period of nine years, carbon emissions were higher than its sequestration from the atmosphere, which shows the need for management and planning to mitigate the impacts caused by intense land use changes in the studied watershed.

ABSTRACT Land use changes are related to urbanization, economics and technology, influencing the management of natural resources and the ecosystem processes. The present study evaluated the behavior of land use changes in the period of 2007 and 2016, and identified the influence of these changes on the Atlantic Forest vegetation and the expected consequences for a future scenario in the short (2020) and medium term (2025). The study was developed in the Una river basin, located in southeastern Brazil. Land use mapping was performed using Landsat 5 and Sentinel-2A satellite imagery, with visual interpretation techniques. The assessment of land use changes and ecological losses was modeled in the Land Change Modeler and the gains and losses for each category and their future scenarios were identified. The calculations of landscape metrics were performed with the V-LATE extension for ArcGIS. The Anthropogenic Exposure Indicator was applied to evaluate the exposure of fragments. The comparative between land uses showed an increase of 484.33 ha of anthropogenic areas and a decrease of 484.14 ha of vegetation. The greater conversion of forests to other uses was related to agriculture. The fragments are under intense edge effect and 13.70% are under high anthropogenic exposure. By 2016, a loss of 484 ha of Atlantic Forest was identified, being expected a loss of 694.11 ha by 2020 and of 934.10 ha by 2025.
