ABSTRACT: In Brazil, urea is the most used nitrogen (N) fertilizer to improve forage production. However, their excessive use can cause environmental impacts through N losses, such as ammonia (NH3) volatilization. Therefore, the current study adjusted and estimated the NH3 volatilization from urea applied on tropical pastures in three rainfall conditions using mathematical models. Data were collected from Marandu grass (Brachiaria brizantha) fertilized with 50 kg N ha-1 during wet, intermediate, and dry conditions. Ammonia volatilization was measured in five semi-open chambers for 21 days. The linear, quadratic, exponential, Gompertz, Groot, and Richards models were tested for fitting and estimating the NH3 volatilization. The Gompertz, Groot, and Richards models generated predictions similar to the observed data, with a high determination coefficient, indicating a better fit of these equations to data, with precision and accuracy. However, the Groot model was selected due to the lowest root mean square error of prediction (0.29 % total N lost as NH3). The greatest N loss as NH3 volatilization occurred in the wet, followed by intermediate and dry conditions (20.2, 17.0, and 11.3 % total N lost as NH3, respectively). Therefore, nitrogen losses as NH3 volatilization after application of 50 kg N ha-1, as urea source, are altered according to the weather conditions, reaching 20% of N added in the wet rainfall period. The Groot model is recommended for fitting and estimating the NH3 volatilization from urea applied on Marandu grass pastures in the wet and dry rainfall conditions.

RESUMO: No Brasil, a ureia é o fertilizante nitrogenado mais utilizado para melhorar a produção de forragem. No entanto, seu uso excessivo pode causar impactos ambientais por meio de perdas de nitrogênio (N), como a volatilização da amônia (NH3). Portanto, o objetivo do presente estudo foi ajustar a volatilização de NH3 da ureia aplicada em pastos tropicais em três condições de chuva utilizando modelos matemáticos. Dados foram coletados de pastos de capim-marandu (Brachiaria brizantha) adubado com 50 kg N ha-1 em condições úmidas, intermediárias e secas. A volatilização da NH3 foi medida em cinco câmaras semiabertas durante 21 dias. Os modelos, linear, quadrático, exponencial, Gompertz, Groot e Richards foram testados para ajuste e estimativa da volatilização do NH3. Os modelos de Gompertz, Groot e Richards geraram predições semelhantes aos dados observados, com alto coeficiente de determinação, indicando um melhor ajuste dessas equações aos dados, com acurácia e precisão. No entanto, o modelo Groot foi selecionado devido ao menor erro quadrático médio das predições (0,29% de N total perdido como NH3). A maior volatilização de NH3 ocorreu em condições climáticas úmida, seguido por intermediária e seca (20,2; 17,0 e 11,3% de N total perdido como NH3, respectivamente). Portanto, as perdas de N como volatilização de NH3 após a aplicação de 50 kg N ha-1, como fonte de ureia, são alteradas de acordo com as condições climáticas, atingindo a 20% do N adicionado nas condições úmidas. O modelo Groot é recomendado para ajuste e estimativa da volatilização de NH3 da ureia aplicada em pastos de capim Marandu em condições úmidas e secas.

ABSTRACT The effects of diets containing oilseeds were measured to evaluate the productive and economic parameters in the finishing of young, feedlot Nellore bulls. Twenty-four young Nellore bulls were used, with an initial body weight (BW) of 311.46±0.37 kg and 24 months of age, distributed into individual stalls ( 4 × 20 m) in a completely randomized design, totaling four treatments with six repetitions per treatment. Four diets (control, based on corn and soybean meal, and three diets containing cottonseed, soybean, and sunflower) were evaluated. Feed and orts were measured daily to calculate intake and costs. The dry matter intake of the control group was higher than soybean (10.64 kg/day), cotton (9.88 kg/day), and sunflower (9.30 kg/day) treatments, respectively. The cottonseed treatment showed the highest average neutral detergent fiber intake. There was a dietary effect of diets on average daily gain, total weight gain, and final weight. The soybean treatment showed the highest performance, total gain (232.55 kg), and final weight (544.38 kg). Oilseed intake can modify the fatty acids profile in the meat, decreasing its saturated fatty acid content. Whole soybean seed favors performance, improves feed efficiency, fatty acid profile, and fat distribution in the carcass, and can reduce production costs.

Resumo O termo potencial de produção representa a quantidade máxima de produto que seria possível se obter em uma determinada área. Mas qual é o potencial de produção da bovinocultura de corte em pastagens tropicais? Para responder esta pergunta, é necessário compreender os fatores relacionados ao acúmulo de forragem, eficiência de pastejo, composição química da planta forrageira, consumo de forragem e requerimento nutricional dos animais para um dado desempenho, manejo, genética e gestão do sistema de produção. A produtividade média anual da pecuária de corte no Brasil está em torno de 120 kg de peso corporal (aproximadamente 60 kg de carcaça) por hectare. Este índice está bem abaixo de resultados reportados na literatura. O manejo adequado de pastagens com forrageiras tropicais normalmente proporciona taxa de lotação acima de uma unidade animal (UA, 450 kg) por hectare. O aumento na taxa de lotação, combinado com elevado ganho de peso proporcionam alta produtividade, podendo ultrapassar 1260 kg de peso corporal (aproximadamente 630 kg de carcaça) anuais por hectare. A produção de bovinos de corte em pastagens tropicais possui alto potencial de resposta quanto a adoção de tecnologias para incremento nos índices de produtividade.

Abstract The expression production potential represents the maximum amount of products that can be obtained per unit area. However, what is the maximum amount of product that can be obtained in a pasture area? To answer this question, it is necessary to understand the factors related to forage accumulation, grazing efficiency, chemical composition of the forage plant, forage intake and nutritional requirements of animals, management, genetics, and management of the production system. The average annual productivity of beef cattle in Brazil is approximately 120 kg of body weight (approximately 60 kg of carcass) per hectare. This index is below the parameters reported in the literature. Adequate management of pastures with tropical forages usually provides a stocking rate above one animal unit (450 kg) per hectare. The increase in the stocking rate, combined with high individual body weight gain, provides high productivity, which may exceed 1260 kg of body weight (approximately 630 of carcass) per hectare per year. The production of beef cattle in tropical pastures has a high response potential with regard to the adoption of technologies to increase productivity indices.

RESUMO: O milho é uma cultura exigente em nitrogênio e a utilização de práticas de manejo como a inoculação das sementes com bactérias diazotróficas, poderão maximizar a produtividade da cultura, atrelados a redução do uso de adubos nitrogenados, podendo refletir em menor custo de produção. O presente trabalho objetivou avaliar o efeito da inoculação de sementes de milho com Azospirillum brasilense e adição controlada de nitrogênio em cobertura sobre a nutrição, componentes da produção e produtividade de grãos da cultura. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial 2 x 5. Os tratamentos foram constituídos pela inoculação ou não das sementes do milho com A. brasilense (dose de 100 mL para 25 kg de sementes) e cinco doses de nitrogênio (N) em cobertura (0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 kg N ha-1 fonte ureia [45% N]) foram aplicadas quando o milho estava no estádio fenológico V6. Teores de macronutrientes foliares, o índice de clorofila foliar (FCI), os componentes da produção e a produtividade de grãos do milho foram avaliados. Constatou-se que a inoculação das sementes de milho com A. brasilense incrementou a altura de plantas e a produtividade de grãos. A adubação em cobertura, com a dose de até 120 kg N ha-1, aumentou linearmente os teores nutricionais foliares e a produtividade de grãos do milho irrigado cultivado na primavera/verão na região de Cerrado de baixa altitude do Brasil.

ABSTRACT: Corn is a nitrogen-intensive crop, and the use of management practices such as inoculation of the seed with diazotrophic bacteria, which can maximize crop productivity and reduce the need of nitrogen fertilizers, may result in lower production costs. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of inoculation of corn seed with Azospirillum brasilense and controlled addition of nitrogen to topdressing on the nutrition, production components, and productivity of crop grain. The experimental design was a randomized block design, with four replications in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme. The treatments consisted of inoculation or not of corn seed with A. brasilense (at 100 mL per 25 kg of seed) and five nitrogen (N) levels in topdressing (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 kg N ha-1 from urea [45% N]) were applied when the corn was in the phenological growth stage V6. Foliar macronutrients, foliar chlorophyll index (FCI), production components, and yield of corn grain were valuated. Inoculation of corn seeds with A. brasilense increased plant height and grain yield. Fertilization in topdressing, with N levels up to 120 kg ha-1, linearly increased the foliar nutrients and productivity of corn cultivated in the spring/summer in the low-altitude Cerrado region of Brazil.

Em sistemas de produção como a integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP) em sistema plantio direto (SPD) têm sido observadas melhorias nos atributos químicos, físicos e biológicos do solo. Sendo assim, objetivou-se avaliar as alterações nos atributos químicos e físicos do solo e o acúmulo de carbono (C) num Latossolo Vermelho distrófico típico argiloso utilizado em sistema de ILP em SPD com irrigação, no Cerrado. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram dispostos em parcelas subdivididas no tempo, e as parcelas experimentais foram compostas pelas culturas do milho e do sorgo forrageiro cultivadas exclusivamente ou consorciadas com as espécies forrageiras Urochloa brizantha cv. Xaraés e Megathyrsus maximum cv. Tanzânia para ensilagem; pelas espécies forrageiras no período de entressafra; e pela cultura da soja em sucessão. Foram realizadas durante a condução dos experimentos, além da análise com a caracterização inicial do solo, cinco avaliações (épocas) dos atributos químicos e físicos do solo ao final de cada ciclo produtivo durante os anos agrícolas 2010/2011, 2011/2012 e 2012/2013. Os sistemas de produção na ILP em SPD, mesmo com alta exportação de nutrientes e tráfego de máquinas, foram eficientes para manutenção e melhoria da fertilidade e dos estoques de C do solo. Ao longo de três anos, os sistemas de ILP promoveram redução da compactação do solo pelo efeito positivo de incremento da macroporosidade e porosidade total e diminuição da resistência mecânica à penetração e densidade do solo, nas camadas de 0-0,10 e 0,10-0,20 m.

In production systems such as the integrated crop-livestock system (ICL) under no-tillage, improvements have been observed in chemical, physical, and biological soil properties. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the changes in chemical and physical soil properties, as well as carbon (C) accumulation, in an Oxisol under irrigated conditions in the Cerrado (Brazilian tropical savanna) in an ICL system under no-tillage. The experiment was carried during the growing of 2010/2011, 2011/2012, and 2012/2013. A randomized block experimental design with four replications was used. Treatments were arranged in split plots in time, and the experimental plots were composed of the following: maize and forage sorghum grown separately or intercropped with the forages Urochloa brizantha var. Xaraés and Megathyrsus maximum var. Tanzânia for ensiling; forage species in the between-harvest period; and the soybean crop in succession. In addition to the initial characterization, five evaluations (seasons) of the soil chemical and physical properties at the end of each production cycle were performed while carrying out the experiment. Production in the ICL system under no-tillage, even with high nutrient export and machine traffic, were efficient in maintaining and even improving soil fertility and soil C stocks. Over a three-year period, the ICL led to reduction in soil compaction through the positive effect of increased macroporosity and total porosity and decreased resistance to penetration and bulk density, in the 0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m soil layers.
