Abstract Background Patient and Family-Centered Care (PFCC) interventions are increasingly recognized as a viable approach to address various mental health issues among patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Therefore, this review aims to estimate the effect of Patient and Family-Centered Care Interventions on specific outcomes in adult patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Methods We systematically searched four major databases for parallel arm Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs). The PRISMA framework was used to report our review. We included studies involving adult patients (> 18-years) admitted to ICUs and examined the effects of any type of Patient and Family-Centered Care intervention (PFCC) on outcomes such as depression, anxiety, delirium, and length of hospital stay. Data extraction was performed independently by two authors in Medline, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect, from inception to July 2024. Random effects model was used to pool the data. Results A total of 11 studies were included in our systematic review and meta-analysis, with a combined sample size of 3352 patients (PFCC group, n = 1681; usual care group, n = 1671). A random-effects model revealed a significant reduction in delirium prevalence in the PFCC group, with a pooled Risk Ratio (RR) of 0.54 (95% CI 0.36 to 0.81). However, no statistical significance was found for other outcomes such as depression, length of ICU stay, and anxiety. It is important to note that all the included studies were assessed to have either a high or unclear risk of bias. Conclusion PFCC interventions may significantly reduce delirium rates among ICU patients; however, their effects on other outcomes, such as depression, anxiety, and length of stay, were not statistically significant.

Resumo: Os conceitos de “valores universais” e “valores comuns de toda a humanidade” são frequentemente confundidos. A literatura existente examinou a distinção entre esses dois conceitos dentro dos domínios filosóficos da ontologia, metodologia, epistemologia, perspectivas históricas e ética. A inovação deste artigo está em sua análise a partir de uma perspectiva mais micro, com foco no conceito de “liberdade individual”. A noção de “liberdade pessoal” de Marx é caracterizada como “liberdade concreta”, referindo-se ao “indivíduo real” como histórico, social e relacional. Em contraste, o conceito de “liberdade pessoal” dos filósofos liberais é visto como “liberdade abstrata”, em que o indivíduo é considerado inato, natural e independente. Marx se aprofundou no campo da produção material, concentrando-se no trabalho do indivíduo e nas relações de produção. Ele defendeu a abolição do trabalho alienado, visando a uma sociedade na qual, em um sistema comunista, cada pessoa pudesse alcançar um desenvolvimento livre e abrangente. As disparidades entre essas noções de “liberdade pessoal” refletem as distinções fundamentais entre os “valores comuns para toda a humanidade” de Marx e os “valores universais” ocidentais.

Abstract: The concepts of “universal values” and “common values of all humanity” are often confused. Existing literature has examined the distinction between these two concepts within the philosophical domains of ontology, methodology, epistemology, historical perspectives and ethics. The innovation of this paper lies in its analysis from a more micro-level perspective, focusing on the concept of “individual freedom”. Marx’s notion of “personal freedom” is characterized as “concrete freedom,” referring to the “real individual” as historical, social and relational. In contrast, the liberal philosophers’ concept of “personal freedom” is seen as “abstract freedom,” where the individual is regarded as innate, natural and independent. Marx delved into the realm of material production, focusing on the individual’s labor and the relations of production. He advocated for the abolition of alienated labor, aiming for a society where, in a communist system, each person could achieve free and comprehensive development. The disparities in these notions of “personal freedom” reflect the fundamental distinctions between Marx’s “common values for all humanity” and Western “universal values”.

ABSTRACT The original two-order separating sieve has a good potato-soil separating ability, but it causes significant damage to potatoes while ensuring a high potato detection rate, which in turn affects the working effectiveness of the potato digger. Thus, it is necessary to improve the design of the original swing separation sieve with a two-order sieve surface to one with a three-order sieve surface to solve the contradiction between the potato detection and potato damage. On this basis, the movement characteristics of potatoes and the separation performance of the new sieve were experimentally investigated. The experiment was conducted in a test field in Wuchuan County using a completely randomized design in a single-factor scheme with three factors and five levels, with five crank speeds (140, 150, 180, 210 and 225 rpm), five machine forward speeds (1.41, 1.51, 1.70, 1.89 and 2.21 km h-1) and five boom-connecting rod length combinations (250-350-1,030, 250-370-1,040, 270-370-1,050, 290-370-1,060 and 310-370-1,070 mm). Each experiment was repeated three times at each level, and the average value was taken as the final result. The experimental results demonstrate that the new three-order separation sieve can ensure a high potato detection rate while maintaining a low potato skin breakage rate.

RESUMO A peneira de separação de duas ordens original tem uma boa capacidade de separação batata-solo, mas causa danos significativos às batatas ao mesmo tempo em que garante uma alta taxa de evidência de batatas, o que, por sua vez, afeta a eficácia do trabalho da escavadeira de batatas. Assim, o estudo teve como objetivo aprimorar a peneira de separação de balanço original com uma superfície de peneira de duas ordens para uma nova peneira de separação com uma superfície de peneira de três ordens para resolver a contradição entre a taxa obvia de batatas e os danos às batatas na operação da peneira original. Os resultados experimentais demonstram que a nova peneira de separação de três ordens pode garantir uma alta taxa de detecção de batatas enquanto mantém uma baixa taxa de danos à casca das batatas.

RESUMO Introdução: Os esportes desempenham um papel importante na manutenção da saúde comunitária, com impactos positivos no sistema imunológico. Nos bastidores da prevenção da COVID-19, o valor do exercício foi reconhecido tanto nas necessidades individuais quanto coletivas de saúde, porém um cenário atual de sua utilização e seu impacto psicossocial ainda não foram documentados. Objetivo: Estudar o impacto da doença COVID-19 nas atividades esportivas em grupo e explorar os aspectos sociais e psicológicos dos moradores. Métodos: Este artigo adota o método de survey online, distribuindo questionários relevantes aos moradores urbanos analisando a frequência atual das atividades esportivas em grupo, os hobbies individuais e as atividades esportivas em grupo, bem como suas áreas de distribuição, organização e os impactos gerados pela pandemia. Resultados: Os sujeitos pesquisados na área de estudo possuem bons hábitos de atividade física. Os residentes do sexo masculino tendem a preferir jogos de bola enquanto as mulheres preferem atividades que exploram o relaxamento e a comunicação. As atividades esportivas em grupo possuem mais adeptos. Conclusão: Apesar dos bons hábitos verificados na maioria da população, faz-se necessária a necessidade de aprimorar as instalações ao ar livre e nos locais de treino esportivo interno, além de estabelecer um bom sistema de divulgação nas informações sobre o serviço psicológico social. ABSTRACT Introduction: Sports play an important role in maintaining community health, positively impacting the immune system. Behind the scenes of COVID-19 prevention, the value of exercise has been recognized in both individual and collective health needs. Yet, a current scenario of its use and psychosocial impact has to be documented. Objective: Study the impact of COVID-19 disease on group sports activities and explore residents’ social and psychological aspects. Methods: This paper adopts the online survey method by distributing relevant questionnaires to urban residents analyzing the current frequency of group sports activities, individual hobbies, and group sports activities, their distribution areas, organization, and the impacts generated by the pandemic. Results: The surveyed subjects in the study area have good physical activity habits. Male residents prefer ball games, and female residents prefer activities that explore relaxation and communication. Group sports activities have more followers. Conclusion: Despite the good habits verified in the majority of the population, it is necessary to improve outdoor facilities and indoor sports training places and establish a good system for disseminating information about the social-psychological service. RESUMEN Introducción: El deporte desempeña un papel importante en el mantenimiento de la salud de la comunidad, con impactos positivos en el sistema inmunológico. Entre los antecedentes de la prevención del COVID-19, se ha reconocido el valor del ejercicio en las necesidades de salud tanto individuales como colectivas, sin embargo aún no se ha documentado un escenario actual de su uso y su impacto psicosocial. Objetivo: Estudiar el impacto de la enfermedad COVID-19 en las actividades deportivas de grupo y explorar los aspectos sociales y psicológicos de los residentes. Métodos: Este trabajo adopta el método de encuesta en línea mediante la distribución de cuestionarios pertinentes a los residentes urbanos que analizan la frecuencia actual de las actividades deportivas en grupo, las aficiones individuales y las actividades deportivas en grupo, así como sus áreas de distribución, la organización y los impactos generados por la pandemia. Resultados: Los sujetos encuestados en el área de estudio tienen buenos hábitos de actividad física. Los residentes masculinos tienden a preferir los juegos de pelota, mientras que las mujeres prefieren actividades que exploren la relajación y la comunicación. Las actividades deportivas en grupo tienen más seguidores. Conclusión: A pesar de los buenos hábitos constatados en la mayoría de la población, es necesario mejorar las instalaciones exteriores y los lugares de entrenamiento deportivo interior, además de establecer un buen sistema de difusión en la información sobre el servicio psicológico social. SUMMARY: This study aimed to investigate the effect of exogenous ghrelin on pancreatic growth and development in African ostrich chicks. Sixteen 40-day-old African ostrich chicks (male or female) were randomly divided into four groups and injected intravenously metatarsal vein with saline (control) or ghrelin (10, 50, and 100 μg/kg) for 6 days. Body and pancreas weight were determined, structural characteristics were observed using HE staining, somatostatin-immunopositive cells were detected using immunohistochemistry. The results were as follows: 1. The 50 and 100 μg/kg groups showed lower relative pancreas weight than the control group (P < 0.05). 2.The islet area per unit area of the pancreas was higher in the 10, 50, and 100 μg/kg groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). The number of islets per unit area of the pancreas was lower in the 10 μg/kg group than in the control (P < 0.05) and slightly higher in the 50 and 100 μg/kg groups than in the control (P > 0.05. Moreover, compared with the control, the islet cells in treatment groups were loosely arranged and showed reduced cytoplasm. In the exocrine pancreas, the volume of acinar cells in the 10, 50, and 100 μg/kg groups all decreased to varying degrees. 3. Somatostatin immunopositive cells were mainly located around the periphery of the islets and sporadically distributed in the center. The density of the somatostatin immunopositive cells in the 10, 50, and 100 μg/kg groups was higher than that in the control (P < 0.05). These findings suggest that exogenous ghrelin increases the area and number of islets and number of somatostatin immunopositive cells but reduces relative pancreas weight and effects the morphological and structural development of the pancreas, which may inhibit the pancreatic growth and development in African ostrich chicks.

RESUMEN: Este estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar el efecto de la grelina exógena sobre el crecimiento y desarrollo del páncreas en polluelos de avestruz africana. RESUMO OBJETIVO Um estudo anterior indicou que o miR-1204 exerce efeitos oncogênicos no Câncer de Mama (CM). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as expressões de miR-1204 sérico e em tecidos em pacientes com CM e investigar o seu potencial biomarcador. METODOLOGIA As expressões de miR-1204 sérico e em tecidos foram investigadas por qRT-PCR em 144 pacientes com CM e 38 controles saudáveis. Testes qui-quadrados foram realizados para examinar as associações entre as expressões de miR-1204 e os fatores clinicopatológicos. Em seguida, as associações entre nível de miR-1204s e sobrevida de pacientes de CM foram determinadas através de análises de Kaplan-Meier e multivariadas. A Curva Característica de Operação do Receptor (ROC) e área sob a curva (AUC) foram obtidas para validar o valor diagnóstico do MIR-1204. RESULTADOS Descobrimos que as expressões do MIR-1204 estavam aumentadas em amostras de tecido e séricas de pacientes com CM. Análises multivariadas identificaram a superexpressão de miR-1204 sérico e em tecidos como um fator independente de prognóstico ruim. Além disso, as curvas ROC indicaram que o miR-1204 sérico e em tecidos é um possível marcador de diagnóstico de CM. CONCLUSÃO A detecção dos níveis MIR-1204 em tecidos e séricos pode ter potencial clínico como um novo biomarcador de prognóstico/diagnóstico para pacientes de CM.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE A previous study has reported that miR-1204 exerted oncogenic effects in breast cancer (BC). The purpose of our paper was to evaluate the expressions of tissue and serum miR-1204 in patients with BC and further investigate its biomarker potential. METHODS The expressions of tissue and serum miR-1204 were investigated by qRT-PCR in 144 BC patients and 38 healthy controls. Chi-square tests were conducted to examine the associations between miR-1204 expressions and clinicopathological factors. Then, the associations of miR-1204s level with the survival of BC patients were determined by performing the Kaplan-Meier and multivariate analysis. The receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and area under the OC curve (AUC) were obtained to validate the diagnostic values of miR-1204. RESULTS We found that the expressions of miR-1204 were increased in both tissue and serum samples from BC patients. Multivariate assays identified tissue and serum miR-1204 overexpression as an independent poor prognostic factor. In addition, ROC curve assays indicated that tissue and serum miR-1204 are potential diagnostic markers of BC. CONCLUSIONS Detection of tissue and serum miR-1204 levels could have clinical potential as a novel prognostic/diagnostic biomarker for BC patients.

The present study aimed to investigate the in vivo inhibitory effect of histone deacetylase inhibitor suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) combined with sorafenib on human hepatocellular carcinoma HCCLM3 cells. The nude mice transplanted with HCCLM3 cells were randomly divided into control, SAHA, sorafenib and SAHA+sorafenib groups. The nude mice in the later 3 groups were intragastrically administrated with SAHA (10 mg·kg-1·day-1), sorafenib (10 mg·kg-1·day-1) and SAHA (10 mg·kg-1·day-1) combined with sorafenib (10 mg·kg-1·day-1), respectively, for successive 20 days. Finally, the inhibition rate of tumor was measured. The expressions of MEK1/2, p-ERK1/2, Cyclin D1, Bcl-2, Bax, p53, MMP-2, MMP-9 and uPA in tumor tissues were determined. Results showed that, compared with SAHA and Sorafenib groups, in SAHA+sorafenib groups the inhibition rate of tumor was significantly increased (P < 0.05), the expression levels of MEK1/2, p-ERK1/2, Cyclin D1, Bcl-2, MMP-2 and MMP-9 and uPA protein in tumor tissues were significantly decreased, respectively (P < 0.05), and the expression levels of Bax and p53 protein were significantly increased, respectively (P < 0.05). In conclusion, compared with single drug, SAHA combined with sorafenib can enhance the inhibitory effects on HCCLM3 xenografts in nude mice.

ABSTRACT In order to make reasonable suggestions for the expansion of the Air Traffic Management Technical Support System (ATMTSS), it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the ATMTSS network. This paper constructs a multi-source weighted ATMTSS network which considers the working characteristics and geographical locations of the facilities. The complex network metrics, such as degree, node strength, clustering coefficient, average path length, diameter, and the improved Fast-Newman (FN) algorithm, are used in the analysis of the network. The results show that the ATMTSS network is a complex network with small-world characteristics and random characteristics, and that the distribution of ATMTSS network support capability is not the same as the topology network structure. The weighted network is looser than the non-weighted network. The air traffic management in remote areas is less affected by facilities than that in developed areas.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the roles of miRNA in the development of ovarian follicles in sows with high ovulation rate. The miRNA expression profiles in middle-size ovarian follicles between Meishan and Duroc sows were characterized by Affymetrix miRNA GeneChip. Seven differentially expressed miRNA were identified. KEGG pathways analyzed the predicted target genes of differentially expressed miRNA by using the DAVID website. The MAPK signaling pathway may affect the process of ovarian follicle development. Our study suggested that miR-21, miR-199a, miR-708, and miR-4334 might play a vital role in the development of ovarian follicles of sow.

Abstract The flow of proppant-laden fluid (PLF) in the fracture is a typical problem of solid-liquid two phase flow, and the transportation and deposition of proppants are essential to determine the flow conductivity of hydraulic fracturing. The self-suspending proppant with a water soluble surface coating is a newly presented supporting material and has great potential for hydraulic fracturing. The purpose of this paper is to understand the physical process, and investigate the effect of the self-suspending proppant on particle placement and transportation in the fracture. Two experiments of the PLF flow were conducted in a fracture, using the common ceramic proppant and self-suspending proppant, respectively. The fracture was formed by two parallel plexiglass planes, and was 4000 mm in length, 10 mm in width and 600 mm in height. It was found that four different zones developed when proppants were injected into the fracture continuously, which were the proppant bank zone, tumbling zone, suspending zone, and free zone. Compared with the common proppant, the self-suspending proppant changes the particle distribution in the fracture, and increases the thickness of proppant suspending and bank zone. The motion behavior of self-suspending proppants in the fracture is described. The conclusion is that appropriate reduction in the proppant concentration and density is beneficial to the good distribution and transportation of proppants in the fracture, and the self-suspending proppant favors the effective supporting of fracture.

Abstract To know more about the potential roles of endophytic fungi in the formation mechanism of Daodi medicinal material, diversity and communities of culturable endophytic fungi in three types of tree peonies were investigated. Endophytic fungi of three types of tree peonies were isolated and identified. The diversity was analyzed. Bayesian trees constructed by MrBayes 3.2.6 after phylogenetic analysis of the ITS sequences. The endophytic fungi potential for synthesis of natural products was assessed by means of detecting NRPS and PKS gene sequences. In total, 364 endophytic fungi isolates representing 26 genera were recovered from Paeonia ostii ‘Feng Dan’, Paeonia ostii ‘Luoyang Feng Dan’, and Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Luoyang Hong’. More culturable endophytic fungi appeared in P. suffruticosa ‘Luoyang Hong’ (206) compared with P. ostii ‘Feng Dan’ (60) and P. ostii ‘Luoyang Feng Dan’ (98). The fungal community of P. ostii ‘Feng Dan’ had the highest richness and diversity. PKSs and NRPS detection rates of endophytic fungi from P. ostii ‘Feng Dan’ are both the highest among the three types of tree peonies. Results indicate that endophytic fungus is an important factor of Daodi Cortex Moutan forming, and endophytic fungi in peony are related to genuineness of Cortex Moutan.

Ghrelin, an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor, has been detected in the thymus of multiple vertebrates. However, little is known about its distribution in the thymus of the African ostrich. In this study, we evaluated the distribution and morphological characteristics of ghrelin-producing cells in the thymus of the African ostrich. Our results revealed that the thymus consists of a capsule and a parenchyma, which comprises the cortex and medulla. Compared to the cortex, the medulla had a fewer number of thymocytes and a greater number of epithelial cells. Additionally, three thymic corpuscles were identified. Ghrelin-immunopositive (ghrelin-ip) cells were detected both in the cortex and medulla of the African ostrich thymus, specifically within epithelial cells and thymic corpuscles. On the other hand, no ghrelin-ip cells were detected within thymocytes. These results clearly demonstrate the presence of ghrelin-ip cells in the thymus of the African ostrich.

La ghrelina, un ligando endógeno para el receptor secretor de la hormona del crecimiento, se ha detectado en el timo de múltiples vertebrados. Sin embargo, poco se sabe sobre su distribución en el timo de la avestruz africana. En este estudio se evaluó la distribución y características morfológicas de las células productoras de ghrelina en el timo de la avestruz africana. Nuestros resultados revelaron que el timo consiste en una cápsula y un parénquima, que comprende la corteza y la médula. En comparación con la corteza, se observó un número menor de timocitos en la médula y un mayor número de células epiteliales. Además, se identificaron tres corpúsculos tímicos. Se detectaron células inmunopositivas a la ghrelina (ghrelin-ip) tanto en la corteza como en la médula del timo de la avestruz africana, específicamente dentro de células epiteliales y corpúsculos tímicos. Por otra parte, no se detectaron células ghrelin-ip dentro de los timocitos. Estos resultados demuestran claramente la presencia de células ghrelin-ip en el timo de la avestruz africana.

Abstract Shape-selective methylation of naphthalene over SAPO-11, SAPO-5 and mordenite molecular sieves were carried out in a fixed-bed flow reactor under atmospheric pressure. Methanol and mesitylene were used as methylation and solvent agents. The experiment results showed that SAPO-11 exhibited higher stability, higher selectivity of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN) and higher 2,6-/2,7-DMN ratio than SAPO-5 and mordenite molecular sieves. The catalytic performances for the methylation of naphthalene were mainly related to the pore structure of the catalysts. The comparison of the spent SAPO- 11 with fresh SAPO-11 suggested that structure collapse of the SAPO-11 by dealumination was occurred during the methylation of naphthalene with methanol, which may have been caused by high temperature steam from water produced in the reaction or by high temperature methanol vapor.

A excreção urinária de L-carnitina (LC), acetil-L-carnitina (ALC) e propionil-L-carnitine (PLC) e as suas relações com as atividades antioxidantes são presentemente desconhecidos. Líquido de L-carnitina (2,0 g) foi administrada por via oral como uma dose única em 12 indivíduos saudáveis. As concentrações urinárias de LC, PLC e ALC foram detectados por HPLC. Atividades superóxido dismutase (SOD), a capacidade antioxidante total (T-AOC), malondialdeído (MDA) e óxido nítrico (NO) foram medidas por métodos espectrofotométricos. O 0~2 h, 2~4 h, 4~8 h, 8~12 h, 12~24 h excreção de LC foi 53,13±31.36 µmol, 166,93±76.87 µmol, 219,92±76.30 µmol, 100,48±23.89 µmol, 72,07±25.77 µmol, respectivamente. A excreηão de ALC foi 29,70±14.43 µmol, 80,59±32.70 µmol, 109,85±49.21 µmol, 58,65±18.55 µmol, e 80,43±35.44 µmol, respectivamente. A concentraηão de urina de PLC foi 6,63±4.50 µmol, 15,33±12.59 µmol, 15,46±6.26 µmol, 13,41±11.66 µmol e 9,67±7.92 µmol, respectivamente. A taxa de excreηão acumulada de LC foi de 6,1% 24 horas após sua administração. Houve também um aumento nas concentrações de urina de SOD e T-COA e diminuição de NO e de MDA. Correlação positiva foi encontrada entre as concentrações de urina de LC e SOD (r = 0,8277) ou T-AOC (r = 0,9547) e correlação negativa entre a excreção de LC e NO (r = -0,8575) ou MDA (r = 0,7085). Em conclusão, a administração oral única de LC leva ao aumento gradual na excreção urinária de L-carnitina, que foi associada com o aumento das enzimas antioxidantes na urina e as capacidades antioxidantes totais. Estes dados podem ser úteis no futuro para o planejamento de esquemas terapêuticos de LC ou os seus análogos, no futuro.

The urine excretion of L-carnitine (LC), acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) and propionyl-Lcarnitine (PLC) and their relations with the antioxidant activities are presently unknown. Liquid L-carnitine (2.0 g) was administered orally as a single dose in 12 healthy subjects. Urine concentrations of LC, ALC and PLC were detected by HPLC. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidative capacity (T-AOC), malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitrogen monoxidum (NO) activities were measured by spectrophotometric methods. The 0~2 h, 2~4 h, 4~8 h, 8~12 h, 12~24 h excretion of LC was 53.13±31.36 µmol, 166.93±76.87 µmol, 219.92±76.30 µmol, 100.48±23.89 µmol, 72.07±25.77 µmol, respectively. The excretion of ALC was 29.70±14.43 µmol, 80.59±32.70 µmol, 109.85±49.21 µmol, 58.65±18.55 µmol, and 80.43±35.44 µmol, respectively. The urine concentration of PLC was 6.63±4.50 µmol, 15.33±12.59 µmol, 15.46±6.26 µmol, 13.41±11.66 µmol and 9.67±7.92 µmol, respectively. The accumulated excretion rate of LC was 6.1% within 24h after its administration. There was also an increase in urine concentrations of SOD and T-AOC, and a decrease in NO and MDA. A positive correlation was found between urine concentrations of LC and SOD (r = 0.8277) or T-AOC (r = 0.9547), and a negative correlation was found between urine LC excretions and NO (r = -0.8575) or MDA (r = 0.7085). In conclusion, a single oral LC administration let to a gradual increase in urine L-carnitine excretion which was associated with an increase in urine antioxidant enzymes and the total antioxidant capacities. These data may be useful in designing therapeutic regimens of LC or its analogues in the future.

OBJECTIVE: To study the efficacy, safety, and feasibility of stent-assistant angioplasty (SAA) in the treatment of symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis in the elderly. METHODS: SAA was performed in 26 elderly patients with symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis. The success rate, perioperative complications, and long-term effectiveness were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 29 balloon expandable stents were implanted in these patients. The success ratio was 100%. The degree of stenosis decreased from 81.3 ± 8.8% to 3.7 ± 3.6% (p < 0.01). Complications were absent during the perioperative period. Follow-up was performed for seven to 36 months (median: 21.9 months). Two patients developed the recurrent symptoms of vertebrobasilar artery stenosis, and no cerebral ischemic events were noted in the remaining patients, suggesting a favorable outcome. CONCLUSION: SAA is a safe and effective strategy for the treatment of symptomatic vertebrobasilar artery stenosis in the elderly.
