The study was conducted to investigate the different rearing systems on growth performance and meat quality of Wuding chickens (local native breeds in Yunnan Province of P. R. China). A total of 240, 70-day-old Wuding chickens with similar weight were divided into two groups of healthy Wuding chickens: (1) chickens caged-reared at the Poultry Unit of Yunnan Agricultural University, and fed a commercial feed and (2) chickens reared free-range in the gardens or meadows where there was no animal epidemic in Wuding county of Yunnan Province; free-range chickens were provided corn, wheat bran, and grass. The growth performance of caged Wuding chickens was substantially higher than that of free-range chickens. Crude protein content in the breast muscle of free-range cocks was substantially higher than that of caged cocks. The crude ash content of free-range chickens was substantially higher than that of caged chickens. Four essential amino acids (Thr, Leu, Phe and Lys), total essential amino acids and total amino acids in breast muscle of the free-range Wuding chickens were substantially higher than that in caged Wuding chickens. In the free-range mode, the C12:0, C18:l n-9t, C18:1, C18:2 n-6c, C20:0, C20:4, C20:5 n-3, C22:6; total, polyunsaturated, unsaturated, and essential fatty acids in breast muscle of the free-range Wuding chickens were substantially higher than that in caged Wuding chicken. The meat quality of the Wuding chickens was improved by free-range management.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to investigate the effect of methionine deficiency on conventional nutrient composition, NO and NOS activity in the liver and kidney, and expression of genes related to the NF-κB signal pathway. One hundred 1-day-old broilers were divided into control and methionine deficiency group, and provided with a standard diet. The methionine-deficient group was fed with a methionine-deficient diet for 42 days. Moisture content, protein content, and crude lipid content were determined by freeze drying, the Kjeldahl method, and the ether extraction method. The concentration of NO was measured using the nitrate reductase method, and the activity of NOS was measured using colorimetry. mRNA expression of related genes in the NF-κB signal pathway was detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The results showed the contents of crude protein and crude lipid in the liver and kidney of the methionine-deficient group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p<0.05 or p<0.01). There was no significant change in dry matter (p>0.05). Methionine deficiency resulted in significantly increased NO concentration and total nitric oxide synthase (TNOS) activities in the liver and kidney (p<0.01). In contrast, cNOS and inducible iNOS activities significantly decreased (p<0.01). The expression of NF-κB, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-1, and IL-6 mRNA, which are related to the NF-κB signal pathway of the methionine-deficient group, were significantly higher than those in the control group (p<0.05 or p<0.01). It is concluded that long-term feeding diets lacking methionine will lead to changes in nutrient composition and inflammatory injury of the liver and kidney.

ABSTRACT Geese (Anser cygnoides) possess stronger ability of roughage digestion and utilization than other poultries, hence, it has become the focus of attention of scientists. Duodenal, jejunum and ileum were mainly participated in food digestion and nutrient absorption, while the cecum was responsible for biological fermentation. Effects on the geese’s cecal microbiota community by feeding with the all-grass diet have been investigated, however, whether it had an influence on the geese’s duodenal microbiota community remains unexplored. To address this problem, geese feeding with the basal diet for 28 days (G1), the basal diet for 28 days and the all-grass diet for the following 14 days (G2), the basal diet for 42 days (G3) were selected, respectively. The duodenal segments of geese were collected and the hypervariable V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene was sequencing. A total of 4 main phyla and 16 main genera were identified. Moreover, we also successfully identified that two taxa including the Helcococcus and Clostridium could be used as distinguishing biomarkers specific to G2. The functional profiles of the duodenum microbiota were mainly involved in the membrane transport (e.g. ABC transporters), amino acid metabolism, energy metabolism, metabolism of cofactors and vitamins, and cellular processes and signaling pathways in geese feeding with the all-grass diet. In conclusion, the all-grass diet could impact the composition of duodenal microbiota. However, to resolve the underlying mechanism of the fiber digesting and utilization in geese’s gut microbiota, the whole intestinal system needs to be assessed by further studies.

ABSTRACT Objective: To have anatomic measurements of carotid artery bifurcation (CAB) with 64-spiral computed tomography angiography (64-SCTA), and provide anatomic basis for related research. Methods: Imaging data of 92 subjects (45 males, 47 females, the age range 20–82 years and mean age 48.4 ± 6.1 years) without pathology of CAB, who underwent 64-SCTA in head and neck from June 1, 2008 to June 30, 2010, were selected from the Picture Archiving and Communication Systems in Zhongshan Hospital of Xiamen University, Fujian, China. On the 3D images, the angle and size of CAB were measured, and the statistical comparisons of measurements were made between the bilateral, sex and age groups. Results: The measurements of CAB were divided into young (≤ 40 years) and older (> 40 years) groups: bifurcation angle is 36.206° ± 10.210° and 49.343° ± 16.489°, respectively; the inner diameter of common carotid artery (CCA) is 6.820 ± 0.635 and 6.845 ± 0.838 mm, respectively; the proximal inner diameter of internal carotid artery (ICA) is 7.143 ± 0.992 and 7.476 ± 1.630 mm, of the enlargement is 7.568 ± 1.069 and 8.554 ± 1.733 mm, of the distal is 4.897 ± 0.508 and 5.123 ± 0.699 mm, respectively; the inner diameter of external carotid artery (ECA) is 4.324 ± 0.580 and 4.104 ± 0.638 mm, respectively. There were statistically significant differences in all the measurements between male and female groups, in the bifurcation angle, inner diameters of ICA and ECA between young and older groups, and in the bifurcation angle between the left and right (p < 0.05). Conclusion: A 64-SCTA with 3D image post-processing technique can clearly observe and show the CAB. All CAB measurements will provide the objective basis for applied anatomy, imaging diagnosis and surgery treatment.

RESUMO Utilizando um anticorpo monoclonal contra a aflatoxina B1 (AFB1) como ligante, foi identificado um mimotopo específico de aflatoxina B1 após se realizarem quatro ciclos de seleção biológica de 7-peptídeos aleatórios em biblioteca de fago exibida. O mimotopo é denominado P10, e sua sequência de aminoácidos é YRRHEKD. O soro imunológico de ratos Balb/c imunizados com P10 foi especificamente ligado à aflatoxina B1-albumina, indicando que o anticorpo era específico ao AFB1. Esses resultados sugerem que é possível desenvolver a vacina baseada em mimotopo associado à toxina.

Resumo As alterações de recursos geralmente promovem invasões de plantas, suscitando preocupações quanto às conseqüências potenciais da deposição de nitrogênio (N); No entanto, não está claro se os invasores se beneficiarão da deposição de N mais do que com os nativos. O crescimento é um dos traços inerentes mais fundamentais das plantas e, portanto, os bons invasores podem ter vantagens de crescimento superiores em resposta a alterações de recursos. Comparamos o crescimento e a alocação entre plantas invasivas e nativas em diferentes regimes de N, incluindo controles (concentrações ambientais de N). Descobrimos que as plantas invasivas sempre cresceram muito mais do que as plantas nativas em diferentes condições de N, independentemente das análises baseadas em crescimento ou filogenia, e que o primeiro atribuiu mais biomassa aos rebentos do que o segundo. Embora N aumentou o crescimento de plantas invasivas, esse aumento não aumentou com o aumento da adição de N. Através das espécies invasivas e nativas, as mudanças na alocação da biomassa do extrato foram correlacionadas positivamente com as mudanças na biomassa da planta inteira; e a inclinação desse relacionamento foi maior em plantas invasivas do que plantas nativas. Abstract Resource amendments commonly promote plant invasions, raising concerns over the potential consequences of nitrogen (N) deposition; however, it is unclear whether invaders will benefit from N deposition more than natives. Growth is among the most fundamental inherent traits of plants and thus good invaders may have superior growth advantages in response to resource amendments. We compared the growth and allocation between invasive and native plants in different N regimes including controls (ambient N concentrations). We found that invasive plants always grew much larger than native plants in varying N conditions, regardless of growth- or phylogeny-based analyses, and that the former allocated more biomass to shoots than the latter. Although N addition enhanced the growth of invasive plants, this enhancement did not increase with increasing N addition. Across invasive and native species, changes in shoot biomass allocation were positively correlated with changes in whole-plant biomass; and the slope of this relationship was greater in invasive plants than native plants. These findings suggest that enhanced shoot investment makes invasive plants retain a growth advantage in high N conditions relative to natives, and also highlight that future N deposition may increase the risks of plant invasions.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to identify the species and characterize the genetic relationships among mycoplasma isolates from commercial layer hen flocks using 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region (IGSR) sequencing. Twenty-one isolates were obtained from samples collected from commercial layer flocks in four Brazilian states: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. The isolates were recovered from the São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states. Eleven isolates were originated from tracheal swabs, five from shell gland swabs and five from ovary fragment collection. The 16S-23S rDNA IGSR of isolates were amplified by PCR, and the obtained products were subsequently sequenced. The consensus of each isolate was compared to the available sequences using Nucleotide BLAST® to determine the mycoplasma species. A phylogenetic analysis of the Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) sequences was performed. Pairwise analyses showed homologies of 99% to 100% with the previously characterized sequences listed in GenBank®. Four Mycoplasma gallinaceum were isolated from three flocks and seven M. pullorum isolates were obtained from a single flock. The other 10 isolates were all identified as MG and were obtained from four flocks. The 16S-23S rDNA IGSR sequencing was a good method to identify Mycoplasma species isolated from field samples, providing fast and reliable results at relatively low costs. The results were also satisfactory for the single-locus sequence typing of MG isolates.

ABSTRACT Adipose differentiation-related protein (ADFP) is a fatty acid-binding protein that can promote the absorption of long-chain fatty acids. However, few results have been published regarding its role in Yunnan Native chicken breeds. The aim of this study was to determine ADFP gene tissue-specific expression in Piao chickens (PC) and Wuliangshan black-bone chickens (WBC) by RT-qPCR. The ontogenetic expression levels of the ADFP gene were significantly different during growth and development phases in the subcutaneous fat, liver, and pectoralis muscle of PC, and in the subcutaneous fat, liver, and pectoralis muscle of WBC (p<0.05). Individual tissue-differential expression levelswere detectedon d 91 and 112 in PC, with highest levels determined in abdominal fat and subcutaneous fat, respectively. However, in WBC, the highest levels were determined on d 49, 91 and 112 d in the pectoralis muscle and liver. Correlation analysis revealed ADFP expression level in liver of WBC was significantly related with LW and HC (p<0.05), while no significant correlations with carcass fatness (CF) were found in PC (p>0.05). The results suggest ADFPdifferential expression in the liver and pectoral muscles of PC and WBC during the growth and development phases (p<0.05). The observed expression patterns indicate that the ADFP gene plays an important role in lipid metabolism of PC and WBC, and that these patterns are expressed differently in the tissues of different chicken genotypes.

The effects of temperature and atmosphere during cooling on the leachability of chromium from stainless steel slag were investigated. Experiments were performed under an oxidizing atmosphere in a muffle furnace and in a reducing atmosphere in an induction furnace. The slags were subjected to leaching tests using the standard procedure prEN12457-2. Results indicated that an oxidizing atmosphere enhances the leachability of chromium and that the extent of leaching increases with temperature. A reducing atmosphere tends to suppress the leaching of chromium. Differences between the chromium leached from the samples cooled under different atmospheres revealed that it is difficult for CO to completely reduce chromium Cr6+ to Cr³+ once hexavalent chromium has been generated. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize a neutral or reducing atmosphere for cooling the slag so as to prevent the formation of hexavalent chromium.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of feeding conditions on methylation status of FATP1 gene, which is an important candidate gene of Intramuscular fat and important indicator of chicken meat quality. We selected Daninghe (DNH) and Qingjiaoma (QJM) chickens under scatter-feeding and captivity-feeding conditions as experimental animals, and detected the methylation status of FATP1 genes in chicken breast muscle using Bisulfite Sequencing PCR method. The results showed that the methylation level of FATP1 in scatter-fed chicken was lower than in captivity-fed conditions in DNH and QIM chicken breast tissues; DNA methylation in the promoter and exon1 region was demonstrated to negatively regulate the expression of the FATP1 gene. These results suggested that feeding conditions affect the methylation status and expression level of FATP1, thereby affecting the Intramuscular fat content in DNH and QJM chicken breast muscle.

This study aimed to investigate the association between ADAM metallopeptidase domain 33 (ADAM33) gene polymorphisms and the risk of childhood asthma. The relevant studies about the relationship between ADAM33 gene polymorphisms and childhood asthma were searched from electronic databases and the deadline of retrieval was May 2016. The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of ADAM33 (rs511898, rs2280092, rs3918396, rs528557, rs2853209, rs44707, rs2280091 and rs2280089) were analyzed based on several models including the allele, codominant, recessive and dominant models. The results showed that the ADAM33 rs2280091 polymorphism in all four genetic models was associated with an increased risk of childhood asthma. Positive associations were also found between the polymorphisms rs2280090, rs2787094, rs44707 and rs528557 and childhood asthma in some genetic models. This meta-analysis suggested that ADAM33 polymorphisms rs2280091, rs2280090, rs2787094, rs44707 and rs528557 were significantly associated with a high risk of childhood asthma.

We aimed to investigate the potential role and mechanism of microRNA-30c (miR-30c) in the pathological development of chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The serum levels of miR-30c in hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier Xinjiang Uygur patients with inactive, low-replicative, high-replicative and HBe antigen-positive CHB were investigated. HepG2 cells were co-transfected with pHBV1.3 and miR-30c mimic or inhibitor or scramble RNA. The effects of miR-30c dysregulation on HBV replication and gene expression, cell proliferation and cell cycle were then investigated. miR-30c was down-regulated in Xinjiang Uygur patients with CHB compared to healthy controls and its expression level discriminated HBV carrier patients with inactive, low-replicative, high-replicative and HBe antigen-positive risk for disease progression. Overexpression of miR-30c significantly inhibited HBV replication and the expressions of HBV pgRNA, capsid-associated virus DNA and Hbx in hepatoma cells. Moreover, overexpression of miR-30c significantly inhibited cell proliferation and delayed G1/S phase transition in hepatoma cells. Opposite effects were obtained after suppression of miR-30c. Our results indicate that miR-30c was down-regulated in Xinjiang Uygur patients with CHB, and miR-30c levels could serve as a marker for risk stratification of HBV infection. Down-regulation of miR-30c may result in the progression of CHB via promoting HBV replication and cell proliferation.

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the antibacterial activities of blowfly larval induced by natural infection. Methods: The sterile larvae were mixed in a test tube containing a bacterial Escherichia coli (E coli) which was suspended in phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and incubated at 25 ° C for given periods, with sterilized PBS as the control group. Then the haemolymph was collected and tested against Staphylococcus aureus (S aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P aeruginosa), respectively. Diameter ring was recorded to indicate the antibacterial activities. Results: Infected larvae had better antibacterial capacities than sterile larvae. Antibacterial activities peak appeared at 24 hours and disappeared after 48 hours. The induced haemolymph from the larva possesses stronger antibacterial activity against S aureus than P aeruginosa. Conclusion: The sterile larva of blowfly, Lucilia sericata, antibacterial activities could be induced by a natural infection model.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Investigar las actividades antibacterianas de la larva de la mosca azul inducida por infección natural. Métodos: Larvas estériles se mezclaron en un tubo de ensayo que contenía un cultivo bacteriano de Escherichia coli (E coli), suspendido en solución salina taponada con fosfato (PBS), e incubado a 25 ° C por períodos dados, con PBS esterilizado como grupo de control. Entonces la hemolinfa fue recogida y sometida a prueba contra Staphylococcus aureus y Pseudomonas Aeruginosa respectivamente. El anillo del diámetro fue registrado para indicar las actividades antibacterianas. Resultados: Las larvas infectadas tenían mejores capacidades antibacterianas que las larvas estériles. Las actividades antibacterianas alcanzaron el punto máximo a las 24 horas y desaparecieron después de 48 horas. La hemolinfa inducida de la larva posee una actividad antibacteriana más fuerte contra S aureus que contra P aeruginosa. Conclusión: Las actividades antibacterianas de la larva de la mosca azul, Lucilia sericata, pudieron ser inducidas por un modelo de infección natural.

Abstract A method is proposed to study the separation of minimum-, maximum-boiling azeotropic, and low volatility mixtures with a light entrainer, to investigate feasible regions of the key operating parameters reboil ratio (S) and entrainer - feed flowrate ratio (FE/F) for continuous processes. The thermodynamic topological predictions are carried out for 1.0-2, 1.0-1a, and 0.0-1 Serafimov's class diagrams. It relies upon the knowledge of residue curve maps, along with the univolatility line, and it enables the prediction of possible products at the bottom of the column and limiting values of FE/F. The profiles of the stripping, extractive, and rectifying sections are calculated by equations considering S and FE/F, and they bring information about the location of singular points and possible composition profile separatrices that could impair process feasibility. Providing specified product composition and recovery, the approximate calculations are compared with rigorous simulations of extractive distillation processes. Separating non-ideal mixtures using a light entrainer provides more opportunities for the case when it is not easy to find an appropriate heavy or intermediate entrainer.

ABSTRACT Aim: To use computed tomography (CT) to diagnose the reasons for hepatic portal venous gas (HPVG) in the case of an elderly male patient. Methods: This is a case study of an elderly male patient who suffered acute, obvious abdominal pain accompanied with stop of exhaust defecation following three days of diarrhoea, abdominal distention and emesis. The patient also developed asthma, which gradually became severe. The patient was admitted to the hospital where he underwent a physical examination and a CT scan. Results: The CT results confirmed that the patient was suffering from HPVG caused by severe diarrhoea. The CT scan showed obvious expansion and pneumatosis in the enteric cavity and subcutaneous emphysema in the intestinal wall. Also, the intrahepatic portal branches and small branches of veins in the mesentery were filled with a high density of gas. The combination of many factors led to HPVG. Gastrointestinal mucosa and pressure accompanied with intestinal septic infection were the main factors. The case report revealed that gas in the enteric cavity went into the submucosa, then into the small branches of veins in the mesentery and finally into the intrahepatic portal vein system. Conclusions: Computed examination revealed the imaging features of HPVG. Hepatic portal venous gas suggested the growth of enteric cavity pressure, the damage of intestinal mucosa and intestinal infection, providing references for clinical diagnosis.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Utilizar la tomografía computarizada (TC) para diagnosticar las razones para el gas en el sistema venoso portal hepático (GVPH) en el caso de un paciente de edad avanzada. Métodos: Se trata del estudio de caso de un paciente de edad avanzada que padecía de dolor abdominal agudo, evidente, acompañado con distensión abdominal, vómitos, e incapacidad para expulsar gases después de tres días de diarrea. El paciente también desarrolló asma, que poco a poco se convirtió en severa. El paciente fue ingresado en el hospital donde fue sometido a un examen físico y una exploración de TC. Resultados: Los resultados de la TC confirmaron que el paciente sufría de GVPH causado por diarrea severa. La exploración mediante TC mostró evidente expansión y pnematosis en la cavidad entérica, y enfisema subcutáneo en la pared intestinal. Además, las ramas portales intrahepáticas y las pequeñas ramas de las venas en el mesenterio se encontraban llenas con una alta densidad de gas. La combinación de muchos factores llevó a la formación de GVPH. La presión y la mucosa gastrointestinales, y la acompañadas de la infección séptica intestinal fueron los principales factores. El reporte de caso reveló que el gas en la cavidad entérica penetró en la submucosa, luego en las pequeñas ramas de las venas en el mesenterio, y finalmente en el sistema venoso portal intrahepático. Conclusiones: El examen computarizado reveló las imágenes características de GVPH. El gas del sistema venoso portal hepático indicó el aumento de la presión en la cavidad entérica, el daño de la mucosa intestinal y la infección intestinal, ofreciendo así referencias para el diagnóstico clínico.
