ABSTRACT: Enhanced efficiency potassium fertilizers can be a management tool that is crucial to crop sustainability in maize (Zea mays L.). However, there is a need for studies aimed at validating the use of these fertilizers in different production environments. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of maize under sources and rates of K through conventional and enhanced efficiency fertilizers in soil with high available K content. The experiment was carried out for two years in an Oxisol (605 g kg–1 of clay) with high K content (6.7 mmolc dm–3). Three sources were used, one conventional (KCl), one obtained by additives sprayed on the fertilizer surface (KCl-C), and one obtained by compacting KCl powder and adding additives (KCl-CC), associated with three K2O rates as top-dressing (50, 100, 150 kg ha–1) and a control without K2O. In all treatments, 48 kg ha–1 of K2O was applied in the sowing furrow. In the first year, maize yield increased linearly for both the KCl and KCl-C sources. The maximum yield (7,967 kg ha–1) for the KCl-CC was obtained at 88 kg ha–1. In the second year, the maximum yields for the KCl (7,553 kg ha–1) and KCl-C (8,166 kg ha–1) were obtained with 20 and 67 kg ha–1 K2O, respectively, while for the KCl-CC maize yield did not change. Enhanced efficiency K sources promote increases in maize yield ranging from 4.3 % to 7.1 %. Top-dressing K fertilization in high-fertility soils is a viable alternative for producers focused on increasing maize yield, mainly when enhanced efficiency sources are used.

RESUMO O uso de índices de vegetação apresenta bom potencial para a predição da produtividade de diversas culturas, porém fatores como a época de avaliação, cultivares e fenologia da planta podem influenciar na performance de modelos preditivos. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar e comparar a precisão de estimativa da produtividade do feijoeiro, em função do índice de vegetação NDVI, utilizando modelos individuais por cultivar e geral com todas as cultivares. Foram avaliadas as cultivares IAC Imperador e IPR Campos Gerais, de hábitos de crescimento determinado e indeterminado, respectivamente. Foram submetidas a diferentes manejos de fornecimento de nitrogênio, a fim de proporcionar variação da produtividade. Foram realizadas avaliações do NDVI ao longo do ciclo da cultura, em 6 datas, durante estádios vegetativos e reprodutivos. A produtividade de grãos do feijão pode ser estimada com elevada performance em função do índice de vegetação NDVI, obtendo-se R2 de até 78% e erro médio próximo de 350 kg ha-1. Os melhores ajuste de estimativa são obtidas em estádios fenológicos reprodutivos do feijão, especialmente após o florescimento da cultura (R6). Modelos generalistas, compostos por dados de mais de uma cultivar, apresentam precisão semelhante e, em alguns casos, superior aos modelos ajustados para cada cultivar, demonstrando a viabilidade da utilização de um mesmo modelo para vários genótipos.

ABSTRACT The use of vegetation indices has good potential for predicting the productivity of several crops, but factors such as the time of assessment, cultivar, and plant phenology can influence the performance of predictive models. The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the precision of estimating the common bean grain yield, according to the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), using individual models per cultivar and a general model with all cultivars. The cultivars IAC Imperador and IPR Campos Gerais, with determined and indeterminate growth habits, respectively, were evaluated. They were subjected to different nitrogen management methods to provide grain yield variability. NDVI evaluations were conducted throughout the culture cycle on six dates during the vegetative and reproductive stages. The common bean grain yield was estimated with high precision as a function of NDVI, obtaining a precision of up to 78% and an average error close to 350 kg ha-1. The greatest fit of estimation was obtained in the phenological reproductive stages of beans, especially after crop flowering. General models, composed of data from more than one cultivar, had similar precision and, in some cases, superiority to the fitted models for each cultivar, demonstrating the feasibility of using the same model for several genotypes.

ABSTRACT Strategies for conserving natural resources and reducing agricultural inputs are the great challenge for agriculture, such as sustainable alternatives to control agricultural pests of high economic impact, e.g. plant-parasitic nematodes. This work aimed to evaluate phytonematode’s population dynamics in common bean cultivation grown under crop rotations and no-tillage system. The maize was seeded under pearl millet straw and intercropped with three different crops systems: i) exclusive maize system, ii) maize intercropped with brachiaria and, iii) maize intercropped with crotalaria. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three treatments (crops systems) and 4 blocks (5 subsamples each block). The common bean was seeded on the straw of exclusive or intercropped maize. The phytonematode population was evaluated in the soil and in the roots in seven moments: (i) fallow; (ii) pearl millet flowering; (iii) pearl millet maturity; (iv) maize flowering; (v) maize maturity; (vi) common bean flowering; and (vii) common bean maturity. The greatest control of the phytonematodes species described in the area was in the maize intercropped with crotalaria treatment, as the phytonematodes population decreased 2.49-fold in this treatment when compared to exclusive maize, resulting in an increase of 11.27% in common bean yield. Therefore, maize intercropped with crotalaria is a viable alternative to reduce phytonematodes infestation in common bean crop.

ABSTRACT The demand for specialty coffees in the national and international market grows and generates an excellent opportunity for the exploration of new business. The cup quality of coffee is defined by the genetic predisposition of varietal groups, effects of the production environment, crop management, and form of post-harvest processing. Genotypes of Yellow Bourbon have already shown a predisposition to the production of excellent cup quality, but it may differ in sensory attributes and cup quality. The aim of this article was to evaluate the agronomic and qualitative performance of Yellow Bourbon strains from the Active Germplasm Bank of the Agronomic Institute of Campinas, in order to identify the best genotypes for the production of specialty coffees. The experiment was conducted in São Sebastião da Grama, SP, Brazil, at 1,100 meters of altitude in a medium-textured Ultisol. Treatments consisted of 14 strains of Yellow Bourbon, arranged in a randomized block design with three replicates. Field, post-harvest and laboratory evaluations were carried out. The strains IAC J3-1, IAC J9-16 and IAC J19-18-10 stood out in terms of yield values and sensory quality above the average of the studied group. The strains IAC J9-16 and IAC J19-18-10 showed predominance of floral and honey nuances, respectively, indicating that they may have high potential to express these characteristics in the beverage. The results suggested that there are Yellow Bourbon strains suitable for production and with superior cup quality, which highlights the importance of the appropriate choice of genotypes for the production of differentiated specialty coffees.

RESUMO Dependendo das condições edafoclimáticas e de manejo, o consórcio de milho com plantas de cobertura pode reduzir o desempenho agronômico do cereal. Objetivou-se verificar os efeitos do consórcio com Urochloa ruziziensis e Crotalaria spectabilis no desempenho agronômico de milho e na produção e qualidade de palhada após a colheita. Utilizaram-se três tratamentos (monocultivo de milho e milho consorciado com U. ruziziensis e C. spectabilis), distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados. Foram avaliados os componentes de crescimento e de produção e a produtividade de grãos de milho nos três sistemas, bem como a produção de palhada e acúmulo de nitrogênio em cada sistema. Os sistemas de consórcio não reduziram a produtividade e o desempenho agronômico do milho, em relação ao seu monocultivo, independentemente da espécie avaliada. Os sistemas consorciados com C. spectabilis e U. ruziziensis apresentaram produção de palhada 24 e 11 % maior, respectivamente, e o consórcio com C. spectabilis promoveu acúmulo de nitrogênio na palhada 39 % maior, em comparação ao monocultivo de milho.

ABSTRACT Depending on the climate and soil conditions and management, the intercropping of maize with soil cover plants may reduce the cereal agronomic performance. This study aimed to assess the effects of intercropping with Urochloa ruziziensis and Crotalaria spectabilis on the maize agronomic performance and the straw production and quality after the harvest. Three treatments (single maize and maize intercropped with U. ruziziensis and with C. spectabilis) were distributed into a randomized blocks design. The growth and production components and the maize grain yield were evaluated in the three systems, as well as the straw production and nitrogen accumulation in each system. The intercropping systems did not decrease the maize yield and agronomic performance, if compared to the single crop, regardless of the evaluated species. The intercropping with C. spectabilis and U. ruziziensis presented a straw production 24 and 11 % higher, respectively, and the intercropping with C. spectabilis resulted in a straw nitrogen accumulation 39 % higher, when compared to the single maize crop.

Resumo: Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do cultivo antecessor e da adubação nitrogenada em cobertura sobre a produtividade e qualidade fisiológica e sanitária de sementes de feijão-comum. O delineamento utilizado foi em blocos casualizados em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram representadas por três cultivos antecessores (milho exclusivo, milho + Urochloa ruziziensis e U. ruziziensis exclusiva), antecedendo o feijão. As subparcelas foram constituídas de doses de N (ureia) aplicadas em cobertura (0, 40, 80, 120 e 160 kg N.ha-1) quando o feijão estava com quatro folhas expandidas. Avaliou-se a qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das sementes por meio dos testes de germinação, primeira contagem, índice de velocidade de emergência, envelhecimento acelerado, emergência em campo e incidência de patógenos, além do teor de proteína bruta, massa de 100 e produtividade de sementes. Os fatores de estudo não interferiram na qualidade sanitária das sementes. Sobre palhada de U. ruziziensis, a maior produtividade de sementes foi obtida com a dose de N de 115 kg.ha-1, enquanto sobre as palhadas de milho exclusivo e do consórcio, o incremento de produtividade foi linear. O cultivo antecessor com U. ruziziensis, seja cultivada de forma exclusiva ou em consórcio com milho, proporciona maior qualidade fisiológica das sementes de feijão-comum, enquanto a adubação nitrogenada em cobertura não interfere na qualidade de sementes e na massa e teor de proteína das sementes.

Abstract: The aim was to evaluate the effects of previous crop and top-dressing nitrogen fertilization on the yield and physiological and sanitary quality of common bean seeds. The design used was in randomized blocks in a split-plot scheme, with four replications. The plots were represented by three previous crops (sole maize, maize + Urochloa ruziziensis and sole U. ruziziensis), preceding common bean. The subplots consisted of N doses (urea) applied as top-dressing (0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 kg N.ha-1) when the common bean had four expanded leaves. Physiological quality and sanitary quality of the seeds were evaluated through germination tests, first count, emergence speed index, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in the field and pathogen incidence, in addition to crude protein content, 100-seed weight and yield. The study factors did not interfere in the sanitary quality of the seeds. Under U. ruziziensis straw, the highest seed yield was obtained with the N dose of 115 kg.ha-1, while under sole maize and intercropping straw, the increase in yield was linear. Previous crop with U. ruziziensis, whether cultivated as sole crop or intercropped with maize, promotes greater physiological quality of common bean seeds, while top-dressing nitrogen fertilization does not interfere with quality, weight and protein content of the seeds.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of cropping systems (single and twin-rows) and N fertilizer rates in the second top-dressing on the agronomic performance and relative economic returns of maize. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with subplots and three repetitions. The plots were composed of two cropping systems: single and twin-rows. The subplots consisted of six rates of N fertilizer, applied in the second top-dressing fertilization in the V8 phenological stage (eight fully developed leaves) of maize: 0, 14, 28, 56, and 70 kg ha-1 of N. The first application of N top-dressing fertilization (rate of 140 kg ha-1 N) was during the V4 phenological stage (four fully developed leaves) in all treatments. The cropping system of twin-rows provides a higher grain yield and relative economic return of maize. The agronomic efficiency of the twin-row cropping system decreases with increasing N rates, but remains higher than that obtained in the single-row system, independent of the N fertilizer top-dressing rate.. The application of the second N top-dressing fertilization in the V8 phenological stage increases linearly with the grain yield and relative economic return of maize, independent of the cropping system.

RESUMO Determinar o acúmulo e a exportação de nitrogênio (N) pelo feijoeiro em função da palhada e do seu parcelamento é importante visando o manejo e a sustentabilidade dos sistemas agrícolas. O objetivo com esse trabalho foi determinar o acúmulo e a exportação de N pelo feijoeiro cultivado sob palhada de milho ( Zea mays) e braquiária (Urochloa ruziziensis) exclusivos ou em consórcio e em função do parcelamento da adubação nitrogenada em cobertura. O experimento foi conduzido em Jaboticabal-SP-Brasil, durante a safra 2012/13, num Latossolo Vermelho eutrófico típico, sob área irrigada no sistema plantio direto. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso com parcelas subdivididas com quatro repetições, totalizando 120 subparcelas dimensionadas em 25m2 cada. As parcelas foram constituídas pelos sistemas de cultivo antecessores ao feijoeiro: milho, milho consorciado com braquiária e braquiária. As subparcelas foram compostas por dez parcelamentos da adubação nitrogenada de cobertura (PN) estádios fenológicos V 3, V4 e R5 em diferentes combinações. A produtividade de grãos do feijoeiro difere entre os sistemas de cultivo e em função do parcelamento do N em cobertura. O cultivo exclusivo de braquiária proporciona maiores acúmulos de N na parte aérea do feijoeiro comparado ao milho e seu consórcio com braquiária. Independentemente do sistema de cultivo, a aplicação de N em cobertura em dose única de 90 kg ha-1 em V4 (terceiro trifólio) proporciona acúmulos e exportações semelhantes àqueles na ausência da adubação nitrogenada. Os parcelamentos com aplicação de N em cobertura no estádio R5 (pré-florescimento) incrementa as exportações desse nutriente no feijoeiro em sucessão ao milho e seu consórcio com braquiária.

ABSTRACT Determining nitrogen (N) accumulation and export by common bean as a function of straw and of the splitting of this nutrient is very important, aiming at the management and sustainability of agricultural systems. This study aimed to determine the N accumulation and export by common bean as a function of Zea mays and Urochloa ruziziensis grass straw (maize, maize/U. ruziziensis intercropping and U. ruziziensis) and splitting of top-dressing N fertilization. The experiment was conducted in Jaboticabal-SP-Brazil, during the 2012/13 crop season, in a Red Eutrophic Oxisol (Eutrudox) in no-tillage under irrigation. The experimental design was a randomized block with split plots with four replicates, totaling 120 subplots sized in 25m2 each. The plots consisted of the cropping systems prior to common bean: maize, maize/ U. ruziziensis intercropping and U. ruziziensis. The subplots were composed of ten top-dressing N fertilization splitting schemes (NS) at the phenological stages V3, V4 and R5 in different combinations. Common bean grain yield differs among cropping systems and as a function of top-dressed N split application. U. ruziziensis grass as single crop promotes greater N accumulation in common bean shoots compared to maize and its intercropping with U. ruziziensis grass. Regardless the cropping system, top-dressing N application in a single dose (90 kg ha-1) at V4 leads to similar accumulations and exports to those found in the absence of N fertilization. Splitting schemes with N application at the R5 stage increase the exports of this nutrient by common bean in succession to maize and its intercropping with U. ruziziensis grass.

ABSTRACT The crop succession and nitrogen splitting fertilization are managements that can affect the common bean technological quality and, consequently, the profitability of producer and the food biological value. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether crop succession and N splitting fertilization promote differences in the technological quality of common bean grains. The experiment was carried out during winter over two agricultural years in southeastern Brazil. A randomized block design was used in a split-plot scheme, with four replications. The plots were composed of three crop successional systems (maize sole, maize + Urochloa ruziziensis, U. ruziziensis sole) and the subplots contained nine combinations of N splitting fertilization at a rate of 90 kg·ha-1 N top-dressing in the phenological stages V3, V4, and R5 of the common bean and a control without fertilization. The evaluated variables were: sieve yield greater than or equal to 12 (SY ? 12), crude protein content, cooking time, and hydration ratio. Crop succession promotes differences in the technological quality of common bean; however, the N splitting fertilization did not change the technological attributes of grains. The highest technological quality of common bean was obtained after succession with U. ruziziensis sole, generating large size and crude protein content of grain, followed by the succession with maize + U. ruziziensis intercropping, and finally, the succession with maize sole. Therefore, the crop succession is a fundamental factor for obtaining common bean with higher technological quality, affecting the food biological value and the profitability of producers.

ABSTRACT Knowledge on nitrogen absorption rate by crops can indicate important managements, especially the definition of rates of this nutrient and the best time for topdressing application. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the accumulation of biomass and nitrogen in white oat cultivated under severe, moderate and no water deficit. Treatments consisted of levels of irrigation, with four repetitions. The treatments under severe water deficit (L1), moderate deficit (L3) and no deficit (L5) received 11%, 60% and 100% of the water volume evapotranspired by the crop (ETc). For each treatment, six plants were collected in each replicate. After collection, plants were separated into leaves, culm and reproductive structures (panicle + grains). Second and third order regressions were tested to model the behavior of biomass and nitrogen accumulation in white oat leaves, culms, reproductive structures and total over time. The maximum total nitrogen accumulation in white oat plants in the treatments L1, L3 and L5 was 50 kg ha-1, 163 kg ha-1 and 246 kg ha-1, respectively. Severe water deficit drastically reduced biomass and nitrogen accumulation in white oat. Severe water deficit causes earlier peak of biomass and nitrogen accumulation, reduces nitrogen accumulation rate and shortens cycle of white oats.

RESUMO A rotação de culturas é essencial no manejo de espécies de plantas daninhas resistentes a herbicidas. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de sistemas consorciados de milho com braquiária ou crotalária nos parâmetros qualitativos e quantitativos do banco de sementes de plantas daninhas, ao longo da sucessão de milheto, milho e feijão. Além disso, o efeito desses sistemas de rotação de cultura na seleção de espécies específicas de plantas daninhas do banco de sementes também foi avaliado. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram representados por três sistemas de cultivo em sucessão: milheto, milho solteiro, feijoeiro; milheto, milho consorciado com braquiária, feijoeiro; milheto, milho consorciado com crotalária, feijoeiro. Foram calculados os seguintes índices fitossociológicos: densidade, frequência e importância relativa, diversidade e equitabilidade. As produtividades de grãos de milho e de feijão também foram quantificadas. Foram identificadas 23 espécies de plantas daninhas, divididas em 12 famílias, com destaque para Poaceae, sendo as mais importantes Alternanthera tenella, Commelina benghalensis, Eleusine indica e Phyllantus tenellus. O sistema de cultivo com milho solteiro apresentou menor densidade e diversidade de plantas daninhas, com elevada importância para E. indica. Os sistemas de consórcio na safra anterior, como garantia de maior diversidade de plantas daninhas, podem ser utilizados como ferramentas alternativas, diferentes dos herbicidas, para controlar plantas daninhas e melhorar a produtividade do feijoeiro. Em relação ao controle de plantas daninhas no feijoeiro, Crotalaria spectabilis apresentou melhores resultados no sistema consorciado de milho anterior do que Urochloa ruziziensis.

ABSTRACT Crop rotation is critical in the management of herbicide-resistant weed species. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of intercropping systems of maize with brachiaria or crotalaria on qualitative and quantitative parameters of the weed seedbank, along the succession of pearl millet, maize and common bean. Moreover, the effect of these crop rotation systems on the selection of specific weed species of the seedbank was also evaluated. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four replications. The treatments were represented by three cropping systems in succession: pearl millet, single maize, common bean; pearl millet, maize intercropped with brachiaria, common bean; pearl millet, maize intercropped with crotalaria, common bean. The following phytosociological indexes were calculated: density, frequency and relative importance, diversity and equitability. The grain yield of maize and common bean were also quantified. Twenty-three weed species were identified, divided into 12 families, highlighting the Poaceae one, with the most important being Alternanthera tenella, Commelina benghalensis, Eleusine indica and Phyllanthus tenellus. The cropping system with single maize presented a lower density and diversity of weeds, but with a high selection of E. indica. The intercropping systems in the previous crop, as a guarantee of a higher weed diversity, could be use as alternative tools, different from the herbicides, to control weeds and improve the common bean yield. Regarding the weed control in the common bean, Crotalaria spectabilis presented better results in the previous maize-intercropping system than Urochloa ruziziensis.

RESUMO A sucessão de feijoeiro com culturas consorciadas, no sistema plantio direto, é benéfica, sobretudo na busca por sustentabilidade. Além da produção de palhada, o consórcio de culturas pode fornecer nitrogênio (N) ao feijoeiro em sucessão, diminuindo o uso de adubo mineral, que é poluente e tem custo elevado. Objetivou-se avaliar a resposta à adubação nitrogenada de feijoeiro em sucessão a sistemas de cultivo de milho, bem como o desempenho agronômico destes sistemas no plantio direto. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com arranjo de parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições. As parcelas consistiram de sistemas de cultivo de milho exclusivo, em consórcio com braquiária e com crotalária. As subparcelas foram cinco doses de nitrogênio (0 kg ha-1, 50 kg ha-1, 100 kg ha-1, 150 kg ha-1 e 200 kg ha-1), aplicadas em adubação de cobertura no feijoeiro de inverno, em sucessão aos sistemas de cultivo de milho. Nos sistemas de cultivo de milho, avaliaram-se a produtividade de grãos e quantidade e acúmulo de N da palhada. Quanto ao feijoeiro em sucessão, foram avaliados a produtividade e atributos de qualidade de grãos. Embora os três sistemas de cultivo tenham sido viáveis quanto à produtividade de grãos de milho, o consórcio de milho com crotalária proporcionou palhada com maior acúmulo de N e maiores quantidades de massa seca produzida. A elevação das doses de N promoveu aumento na produtividade de grãos de feijoeiro em sucessão ao milho consorciado. O consórcio milho e crotalária proporcionou grãos de maior tamanho e, em relação à produtividade de grãos, observou-se efeito equivalente à aplicação de mais de 200 kg ha-1 de N em cobertura para o feijoeiro em sucessão.

ABSTRACT The common bean succession to intercropped crops in the no-tillage system is beneficial, especially in the search for sustainability. In addition to the straw production, the intercropping can supply nitrogen (N) to the common bean grown in succession, reducing the use of mineral fertilizer, which is pollutant and has a high cost. The present study aimed to evaluate the response to N fertilization of common bean in succession to maize cropping systems, as well as the viability of these systems in the no-tillage system. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a split-plot arrangement, with four replicates. The plots consisted of the following systems: maize as a single crop, maize intercropped with brachiaria and maize intercropped with crotalaria. The subplots were five N doses (0 kg ha-1, 50 kg ha-1, 100 kg ha-1, 150 kg ha-1 and 200 kg ha-1), applied as topdressing fertilization in winter common bean, in succession to the maize cropping systems. For the maize cultivation systems, the grain yield and N amount and accumulation in the straw were evaluated. As for the common bean in succession, the grain yield and grain quality attributes were assessed. Although the three cropping systems were viable for maize grain yield, the intercropping of maize with crotalaria led to a higher N accumulation in the straw and a larger quantity of straw dry mass. The increase of the N doses promoted an increase in the grain yield of common bean grown in succession to intercropped maize. Maize intercropped with crotalaria resulted in grains with a higher size and, concerning the grain yield, an equivalent effect to that of a topdressing application of more than 200 kg ha-1 of N was observed for the common bean in succession.

RESUMO O feijão é a principal fonte de proteína dos países subdesenvolvidos, e o nitrogênio (N) é um dos nutrientes que mais limita a produtividade dessa cultura. Objetivou-se com esse trabalho, sob condição de campo: a) determinar por meio dos índices de eficiência como o N é utilizado por 16 cultivares de feijoeiro comum; and b) classificar estas cultivares em relação à eficiência de uso e responsividade à aplicação de N. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas por 16 cultivares de feijoeiro comum de grão comercial tipo carioca. As subparcelas foram compostas por duas doses de N: 20 e 120 kg ha-1 aplicadas em cobertura. As avaliações foram número de vagens por planta e grãos por vagem, massa de cem grãos, massa seca da parte aérea no florescimento pleno, massa seca de palha e de grãos na maturidade fisiológica e produtividade de grãos. Com base na matéria seca e no teor de nutrientes, os acúmulos de N foram calculados na parte aérea e nos grãos. As eficiências agronômicas, fisiológicas, agro-fisiológicas, recuperação e uso de N foram calculadas. A cultivar BRSMG Uai destaca-se pelas eficiências agronômica, fisiológica, de recuperação e de utilização. Os genótipos BRSMG Uai, BRS FC402, IPR Campos Gerais, IPR Maracanã e TAA Bola Cheia são eficientes e responsivos a aplicação de N em cobertura.

ABSTRACT Common beans are the main source of protein in underdeveloped countries, and nitrogen (N) is one of the nutrients the most limits the productivity of this crop. This study, under field conditions, aimed to: a) determinate through efficiency indices how N is used by 16 cultivars of common beans; and b) classify these cultivars regarding use efficiency and responsivity to N application. The experimental design was in randomized blocks in split-plot scheme, with four replicates. Main plots consisted of 16 cultivars of common beans commercially classified as ‘Carioca type’. Subplots comprised two rates of N: 20 and 120 kg ha-1 applied as top-dressing. The evaluations were number of pods per plant and grains per pod, hundred-grain weight, shoots dry matter at full flowering, straw and grains dry matter at physiological maturity and grain yield. Based on the dry matter and its nutrient contents, the N accumulations were calculated in shoots and grains. The agronomic, physiological, agro-physiological, recovery and use efficiencies of N were calculated. Cultivar BRSMG Uai stands out by agronomic, physiological, recovery and use efficiencies of N. Genotypes BRSMG Uai, BRS FC402, IPR Campos Gerais, IPR Maracanã and TAA Bola Cheia are efficient and responsive to top-dressing N application.

RESUMO O feijoeiro tem sido a principal cultura em sucessão ao milho e à braquiária em sistema plantio direto, no Cerrado. Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de sistemas de cultivo e nitrogênio em cobertura na produtividade e atributos tecnológicos de feijoeiro sob plantio direto. Utilizou-se delineamento em blocos casualizados, em parcelas subdivididas, com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram compostas por três sistemas de cultivo (milho exclusivo, milho + Urochloa ruziziensis e U. ruziziensis exclusiva) e as subparcelas por cinco doses de nitrogênio (0 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1, 80 kg ha-1, 120 kg ha-1 e 160 kg ha-1). Ocorre interação entre sistemas de cultivo antecessores e doses de N para a produtividade de grãos, renda de benefício especificamente na peneira 13, bem como para a relação de hidratação. Doses crescentes de N no feijoeiro em sucessão ao milho exclusivo promovem acréscimos na produtividade de grãos, resultando em renda de benefício na peneira oblonga 14 superior às dos demais sistemas de cultivo avaliados. O aumento das doses de N em cobertura no feijoeiro em sucessão ao milho e U. ruziziensis cultivados exclusivamente e em consórcio não influencia o tempo para máxima hidratação dos grãos, mas reduz o seu tempo de cozimento, principalmente em sucessão a U. ruziziensis e milho em cultivos exclusivos.

ABSTRACT Common bean has been the main crop in succession to corn and Brachiaria in no-tillage systems, in the Brazilian Savannah. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of crop systems and topdressing nitrogen on grain yield and technological attributes of common bean under no-tillage. A randomized block design, in a split-plot arrangement, with four replications, was used. The plots consisted of three crop systems (corn in sole crop, corn + Urochloa ruziziensis intercropped and U. ruziziensis in sole crop) and the subplots by five nitrogen rates (0 kg ha-1, 40 kg ha-1, 80 kg ha-1, 120 kg ha-1 and 160 kg ha-1). There is interaction between predecessor cropping systems and N rates for grain yield, milling efficiency specifically on sieve 13, as well as for the grain hydration ratio. Increasing topdressing N rates applied on common bean in succession to corn in sole crop promote increases in grain yield, resulting in a milling efficiency in the oblong-hole sieve 14 higher than in the other crop systems evaluated. The increase of the topdressing N rates applied on common bean in succession to corn and U. ruziziensis in sole crops or intercropped does not influence the time for maximum hydration of the grains, but reduces their cooking time, mainly in succession to U. ruziziensis and corn in sole crops.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho agronômico de cultivares de feijão-caupi em função de épocas de semeadura no cerrado de Uberaba, MG. O experimento foi conduzido em Uberaba -MG, no delineamento de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial 6 x 3, correspondendo a seis cultivares de feijão-caupi (BRS Itaim, BRS Guariba, BRS Potengi, BRS Cauamé, BRS Novaera e BRS Tumucumaque) e três épocas de semeadura (14/dez/2012 - E1, 14/jan/2013 - E2 e 14/fev/2013 - E3), com quatro repetições. Verificou-se interação cultivares x épocas de semeadura para o número de dias para o florescimento pleno, dias para a maturação das vagens, número de trifólios, altura de inserção da primeira vagem, comprimento de vagens, número de vagem por planta, população final de plantas, massa de 100 grãos e produtividade de grãos. Quando semeadas em dezembro, as cultivares de feijão- caupi produziram menor número de vagens por planta e de grãos por vagem, resultando em inferior produtividade de grãos. A cultivar BRS Tumucumaque apresentou maior produtividade de grãos quando semeada em janeiro. Produtividades de grãos superiores são obtidas na semeadura de fevereiro, sobressaindo-se as cultivares BRS Itaim, BRS Novaera, BRS Guariba e BRS Potengi, com 3.439, 3.435, 3.168 e 3.107 kg ha-1, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to assess the agronomic performance of cowpea cultivars depending on sowing seasons in the Cerrado biome. Thus, an experiment was conducted in Uberaba, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in a complete randomized block design, in a 6x3 factorial arrangement, using six cowpea cultivars (BRS-Itaim, BRS-Guariba, BRS-Potengi, BRS-Cauamé, BRS-Novaera and BRS-Tumucumaque) and three sowing seasons (Dec 14, 2012; Jan 14, 2013; and Feb 14, 2013), with four replications. The interaction between the cultivars and sowing seasons was assessed regarding the number of days for full flowering, number of days for pod maturation, number of trifoliate leaves, height of the first pod -bearing node, pod length, number of pods per plant, final plant population, 100-grain weight and grain yield. The cowpea cultivars sown in December produced the lowest numbers of pods per plant and grains per pod, resulting in the lowest grain yields. The cultivar BRS-Tumucumaque had the highest grain yield in the January sowing. The highest grain yields were found in the February sowing, especially when the cultivars BRS-Itaim (3,439 kg ha-1), BRS-Novaera (3,435 kg ha-1), BRS-Guariba (3,168 kg ha-1) and BRS-Potengi (3,107 kg ha-1) was used.
