Abstract Salinity is a recurring abiotic stress in arid and semi-arid regions, which negatively affects the establishment and growth of plants, however, the cultivation of ornamental species such as celosia argentea can tolerate saline conditions. The objective of this work was to evaluate the emergence and seedling growth of Celosia argentea cultivated under different electrical conductivities of irrigation water. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in the month of July 2021. The experimental design was completely randomized with five treatments and four replications. The treatments were five electrical conductivities of irrigation water (ECw), being: 0.5; 1.5; 2.5; 3.5 and 4.5 dS m-1. They were analysed the emergence variables (percentage of emergence, average emergence time, average emergence velocity and emergence velocity index) and the growth variables (seedling height, number of leaves, stem diameter, primary root length, shoot dry weight and root dry weight) at seedling start. Moderate salinity improves seed vigor, increasing the percentage of C. argentea seedlings that emerge, culminating in satisfactory initial growth. Abstract The presence of salts in the irrigation waters of the semiarid region negatively affects the production of seedlings. Thus, substrates based on carbonized rice husk are an alternative for production in saline environments, associated with irrigation management strategies with brackish water. This study evaluated the physiological responses of yellow passion-fruit seedlings as a function of irrigation strategies with brackish water in different substrates. The study was developed at the Universidade da Integração Internacional da Lusofonia Afro-Brasileira, Redenção, Ceará. The design was entirely randomized, in a 2 × 5 factorial scheme with two substrate compositions (S1 - soil; S2 - sandy soil, sand and carbonized rice husk - 1:1:1 - volume basis) and five irrigation strategies with brackish water (IS1 - low salinity water during the entire cycle 1-65 days after sowing (DAS); and salt stress initiation at: IS2 - 11 DAS; IS3 - 16 DAS; IS4 - 21 DAS; IS5- 26 DAS), with five repetitions. Soil as a substrate was efficient for photosynthesis and chlorophyll. It also provided better results for transpiration, stomatal conductance and leaf area regardless of the strategy. Resumo A região semiárida sofre com a presença de sais nas águas disponíveis para irrigação, afetando a produção de mudas. Assim, substratos a base de casca de arroz carbonizada surgem como alternativa para produção em ambientes salinos, associados a estratégias de manejo da irrigação com águas salobras. Objetivou-se avaliar as respostas fisiológicas e o crescimento de mudas de maracujazeiro amarelo em função de estratégias de irrigação com água salobra em diferentes substratos. Abstract This work was carried out in order to evaluate the initial growth in different conditions of shadings of the species Copernicia alba, Copernicia hospita and Copernicia macroglossa. Initially the seed were soaked in water to a pre-germination, afterward were sowed in tubes (288 ml) filled with substrate (sandy loam + organic compost + vermiculite) in proportion 2:1:1 and kept in full sun, 30%, 50% e 70% shading. It was adopted the completely randomized design, with five repetitions (4 plants/repetition) and five periods of evaluation: 45, 90, 135, 180 and 225 days after sowing, with the factors disposed in a spli-splot measured over time (4 shading levels x 5 evaluation times). Resumo Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o crescimento inicial em diferentes condições de sombreamento das espécies Copernicia alba, Copernicia hospita e Copernicia macroglossa. Inicialmente, as sementes foram embebidas em água para uma pré-germinação, em seguida foram semeadas em tubetes (288 ml) preenchidos com substrato (arisco + composto orgânico + vermiculita) na proporção de 2:1:1 e mantidas a pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento. RESUMO O uso de estratégias de manejo ou alterações no ambiente de cultivo podem reduzir os impactos da salinidade da água de irrigação sobre o desenvolvimento vegetal. Assim, nessa pesquisa foram avaliadas respostas fisiológicas, crescimento inicial e qualidade de plantas de Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan (Angico Branco) sob diferentes níveis de sombreamento e condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação, buscando-se identificar as condições mais favoráveis para o desenvolvimento dessa espécie utilizando-se águas salobras. O experimento foi realizado em blocos casualizados com parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições. As parcelas foram formadas por quatro ambientes com diferentes níveis de sombreamento: 0 (pleno sol), 30, 50 e 70%, e as subparcelas, formadas por cinco níveis crescentes de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação: 0,4, 1,6, 2,8, 4,0 e 5,2 dS.m−1. Foram avaliadas as variáveis: condutividade elétrica do substrato, trocas gasosas foliares, altura de plantas, produção de biomassa e índice de qualidade de Dickson aos 40 dias em viveiro. O uso do sombreamento artificial favoreceu o desenvolvimento das plantas e a taxa de fotossíntese, mesmo quando irrigadas com água de moderada e elevada salinidade. O IQD mostrou que as plantas de A. colubrina apresentaram maior índice de qualidade quando produzidas sob sombreamento intermediário (30% e 50%), com perdas no rendimento inferiores a 20% quando irrigadas com água com condutividade elétrica de até 2,8 dS.m−1.

ABSTRACT The use of management strategies or changes in the cultivation environment can reduce the impacts of irrigation water salinity on plant development. Therefore, in this research, physiological responses, initial growth, and plant quality of Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan (Angico Branco) were evaluated under different levels of shading and electrical conductivity of the irrigation water, seeking to identify the most favorable conditions for the development of this species using brackish water. The experiment was carried out in randomized blocks with split plots and four replications. The plots were formed by four environments with different shading levels: 0 (full sun), 30, 50, and 70%, and the subplots, formed by five increasing levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water: 0.4, 1.6, 2.8, 4.0, and 5.2 dS.m−1. The following variables were evaluated: substrate electrical conductivity, leaf gas exchange, plant height, biomass production, and Dickson quality index at 40 days in a nursery. The use of artificial shading favored plant development and photosynthesis rate, even when irrigated with moderate and high salinity water. The DQI showed that A. colubrina plants presented higher quality index when produced under intermediate shading (30% and 50%), with yield losses below 20% when irrigated with water with electrical conductivity up to 2.8 dS.m−1.

RESUMO A região Nordeste brasileira apresenta condições climáticas favoráveis ao desenvolvimento da floricultura; contudo, a escassez hídrica e a salinização de parte de suas fontes hídricas atuam como entrave a essa atividade. Nesse contexto, objetivou-se testar os efeitos de níveis crescentes de salinidade da água de irrigação sobre as respostas quantitativas e qualitativas das espécies ornamentais Euphorbia milii e Zamioculcas zamiifolia, sob diferentes condições de luminosidade. A pesquisa foi realizada utilizando-se delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, em esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas, com cinco repetições. As plantas foram cultivadas em vasos de 7 L, passando por um período inicial de aclimatação durante 15 dias com água não salina para que o seu estabelecimento não fosse comprometido; após esse período, as plantas foram submetidas a níveis crescentes de salinidade na água de irrigação (0,5; 2,0; 3,5; e 5,0 dS m-1) sob quatro intensidades luminosas (pleno sol, 30%, 50% e 70% de sombreamento), durante 60 dias. As variáveis analisadas foram altura da planta, diâmetro do caule, biomassa da parte subterrânea e das partes aéreas, tolerância à salinidade e análise qualitativa. O sombreamento teve maior impacto nas variáveis qualitativas das plantas do que na tolerância à salinidade baseada em variáveis quantitativas. O ambiente com 30% de sombreamento é o mais propício para o cultivo da E. milii quando se utiliza água de baixa a moderada salinidade. O sombreamento reduz os danos diretos da radiação nas folhas de Z. zamiifolia e melhora a qualidade visual dessa espécie sob elevada salinidade.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Northeast region has favorable climatic conditions for the development of floriculture; however, water scarcity and salinization of part of its water sources act as an obstacle to this activity. In this context, the objective was to test the effects of increasing levels of salinity in irrigation water on the quantitative and qualitative responses of ornamental species Euphorbia milii and Zamioculcas zamiifolia, under different light conditions. The study was carried out using an experimental design in randomized blocks, in a split-split-plot scheme, with five replications. The plants were grown in 7 L pots, undergoing an initial period of acclimatization for 15 days with non-saline water so that their establishment would not be compromised; after this period, the plants were subjected to increasing levels of salinity in the irrigation water (0.5; 2.0; 3.5; and 5.0 dS m-1) under four light intensities (full sun, 30%, 50% and 70% shading) for 60 days. The variables analyzed were plant height, stem diameter, belowground and shoot biomass, salinity tolerance and qualitative analysis. Shading had a greater impact on the qualitative variables of the plants than on the salinity tolerance based on quantitative variables. The environment with 30% shading is the most favorable for the cultivation of E. milii when using water with low to moderate salinity. Shading reduces direct radiation damage to Z. zamiifolia leaves and improves the visual quality of this species under high salinity.

ABSTRACT: Supplemental irrigation during dry spells could reduce maize yield losses in tropical semi-arid regions, notably in small farms. However, good quality water reserves are not sufficient to meet the demands of farming communities. Consequently, our objective was to evaluate the productivity and profitability of maize under different simulated rainfall scenarios, with and without supplemental irrigation (SI) with brackish water. The field experiments were carried out during the cropping seasons of 2018 and 2019 on Ultisol. The experiment followed a randomized block design in the split-plot scheme with four replicates. The plots were formed by simulating the water supply in the soil corresponding to four water scenarios (rainy, normal, drought and severe drought), and the sub-plots with or without SI with brackish water (Electrical conductivity of 4.5 dS m−1). Mean yields of green maize ears were 13,083, 11,532, 10,358 and 9,609 kg ha−1 for rainy, normal, drought and severe drought scenarios, as supplemented with brackish water. For the same treatments without SI the values were 11,394, 7,896, 3,913 and 1,374 kg ha−1, respectively. Data on farmer's income showed that under normal, drought and severe drought supplementation with brackish water becomes economically advantageous from 0.9, 1.0 and 2.4 ha, respectively, while maize cultivation without SI is not advantageous under the last two scenarios. For severe drought conditions, however, SI using brackish water reduced commercial yield by 27 % with negative effects on the farmers’ profitability. In this case, it is necessary to use water with either lower salinity or select salt tolerant crops.

RESUMO Os solos com caráter coeso, devido suas características físicas, podem intensificar as limitações ao cultivo de plantas, tanto em condição de menores quanto maiores porosidades de aeração. Tendo como hipótese que os horizontes com caráter coeso, na umidade que o solo ainda não atingiu a consistência dura à extremamente dura, podem apresentar porosidades de aeração que afetam as trocas gasosas em plantas de milho, o objetivo desse trabalho foi conhecer a influência do horizonte com caráter coeso, em diferentes porosidades de aeração, nas trocas gasosas do milho. O experimento foi conduzido em Fortaleza-CE, em ambiente cercado e coberto, sob delineamento em blocos inteiramente aleatorizado, com cinco porosidades de aeração (PA) (0.04; 0.06; 0.09; 0.11 e 0.13 m3 m-3) e seis repetições, totalizando 30 unidades experimentais. As variáveis analisadas foram: permeabilidade intrínseca (Kar) e trocas gasosas. Acréscimos na PA proporcionaram aumento na Kar. As PA de 0.04 e 0.13 m3 m-3 refletiram menores taxas fotossintéticas (A) (24.54 e 25.50 µmol CO2 m2 s-1, respectivamente) e concentrações internas de CO2 (140,72 e 118.66 µmol mol-1, respectivamente). Com o aumento da PA a condutância estomática e transpiração diminuíram 18% e 13.6%, respectivamente, enquanto o aumento da eficiência intrínseca de carboxilação foi de 19% e eficiência intrínseca do uso da água, 21%. Conclui-se que a variação na porosidade de aeração em solos com caráter coeso afetou as trocas gasosas em plantas de milho, as PA de 0.04 e 0.13 m3 m-3 reduziram a A, devido limitações não estomáticas e estomáticas, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT Due to their physical characteristics, cohesive soils of either low or high aeration porosity can intensify limitations on plant cultivation. With the hypothesis that moist cohesive horizons where the soil has not yet reached a hard to extremely hard consistency may present a level of aeration porosity that affects gas exchange in maize plants, the aim of this study was to understand the influence of a cohesive horizon at different levels of aeration porosity on gas exchange in maize. The experiment was conducted in Fortaleza in the state of Ceará in a screened and covered environment, in a completely randomised block design with five levels of aeration porosity (AP) (0.04, 0.06, 0.09, 0.11 and 0.13 m3 m-3) and six replications, giving a total of 30 experimental units. The variables under analysis were intrinsic permeability (Kar) and gas exchange. Increases in AP afforded an increase in Kar. The AP of 0.04 and 0.13 m3 m-3 reflected in lower values for the photosynthetic rate (A) (24.54 and 25.50 µmol CO2 m2 s-1 respectively) and internal CO2 concentration (140.72 and 118.66 µmol mol-1 respectively). With the increase in AP, stomatal conductance and transpiration were reduced by 18% and 13.6% respectively, while the increase in intrinsic carboxylation efficiency was 19%, and intrinsic water use efficiency, 21%. It was concluded that variations in aeration porosity in cohesive soils affected gas exchange in maize plants. The AP of 0.04 and 0.13 m3 m-3 reduced the value of A due to non-stomatal and stomatal limitations respectively.

RESUMO O manejo adequado de águas salobras pode aumentar a produção vegetal no semiárido brasileiro. Diante disso, objetivou-se avaliar a ação mitigadora da cobertura do solo na produção e eficiência no uso da água em genótipos de amendoim sob estresse salino. O estudo foi conduzido em casa-de-vegetação. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 x 2 x 2, sendo duas condutividades elétricas da água de irrigação (0,9 e 5,0 dS m-1), dois genótipos de amendoim (AC 130 e cv. BR-1) e a presença e ausência da cobertura vegetal morta, com quatro repetições. Aos 72 dias após a semeadura foi realizada a colheita das vagens e avaliadas as seguintes variáveis: vagens comerciais, vagens não comerciais, massa, diâmetro e comprimento da vagem, produção e eficiência no uso da água. A salinidade impactou mais a produção do que a eficiência do uso da água nos dois genótipos de amendoim, sendo que a redução relativa na produção foi maior na cv. BR-1. A cobertura do solo com material vegetal morto minorou os efeitos da salinidade sobre a produção e aumentou a eficiência do uso da água, apenas no genótipo AC 130.

ABSTRACT Proper management of brackish water can increase plant production in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The objective of this study was to evaluate the production performance and water use efficiency of two peanut genotypes irrigated with brackish water during the reproductive stage, in soil with and without soil cover. The study was conducted in a greenhouse. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, with four replicates, in a 2 x 2 x 2 factorial scheme (two electrical conductivities of irrigation water - ECw 0.9 and 5.0 dS m-1, two peanut genotypes - AC 130 and cv. BR1, and the presence or absence of soil cover). At 72 days after sowing, harvest was performed and the following variables were evaluated: number of marketable pods, number of non-marketable pods, pod mass, diameter and length, production and water use efficiency. Salinity impacted production more than the water use efficiency in the two peanut genotypes, with the relative reduction in production being higher in cv. BR-1. Soil cover with dead plant material mitigated the effects of salinity on production and increased water use efficiency, only in genotype AC 130.

RESUMO O aproveitamento de águas de qualidade inferior na agricultura tem se tornado uma alternativa condizente, tendo em vista a restrição de água de boa qualidade. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar, em ambiente protegido, a produção da cultura do agrião d’ água da variedade folha larga em sistema hidropônico NFT (técnica do fluxo laminar de nutrientes) em função do uso de águas salobras e tempos de circulação da solução nutritiva. O experimento foi realizado na área experimental da UFC, Fortaleza - CE, no período de dez/2018 a mar/2019 (dois ciclos de cultivo). Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 5 x 2, cinco níveis de salinidade da água (0,6; 1,6; 2,6; 3,6 e 4,6 dS m-1) e dois tempos de circulação da solução nutritiva, (10 e 15 min), totalizando 10 tratamentos com 4 repetições, resultando em 40 parcelas experimentais. Os parâmetros avaliados foram altura da planta e número de folhas aos 6; 10; 14; 20 e 25 dias após o transplantio (DAT), área foliar, massa fresca da parte área e raiz, massa seca da parte aérea e raiz em ambos os ciclos. A salinidade da água mantida em 2,6 dS m-1 pode ser considerada satisfatória para produção da cultura do agrião, em ambos ciclos de cultivo avaliados. O tempo de 15 minutos de circulação da solução nutritiva foi o que proporcionou os melhores resultados para a cultura do agrião em todos os níveis de salinidade.

ABSTRACT In view of the limitations on good quality water, the use of low-quality water in agriculture is seen as a suitable alternative. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in a protected environment, the production of broadleaf watercress in an NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponic system as a function of the use of brackish water and different circulation times for the nutrient solution. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of UFC, in Fortaleza, Ceará, from December 2018 to March 2019 (two crop cycles). The treatments were distributed in a randomised block design in a 5 x 2 factorial scheme, five levels of water salinity (0.6, 1.6, 2.6, 3.6 and 4.6 dS m-1) and two circulation times for the nutrient solution (10 and 15 min), totalling 10 treatments with 4 replications, resulting in 40 experimental plots. The parameters under evaluation were plant height and number of leaves at 6, 10, 14, 20 and 25 days after transplanting (DAT), leaf area, shoot and root fresh weight, and shoot and root dry weight for each cycle. Water salinity maintained at 2.6 dS m-1 was considered satisfactory for watercress production in both crop cycles under evaluation. A circulation time of 15 minutes for the nutrient solution gave the best results in the watercress at all levels of salinity.

RESUMO A garantia do abastecimento de água para agricultura irrigada no semiárido deve passar necessariamente pelo uso de águas de qualidade inferior, como as águas salobras. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a tolerância à salinidade para as espécies ornamentais Catharanthus roseus, Tagetes patula e Celosia argentea, utilizando-se diferentes métodos. O experimento foi conduzido em blocos ao acaso, arranjado em esquema fatorial 10 x 3, correspondendo a 10 concentrações salinas da água de irrigação (CEa 0,5; 1,0; 1,5; 2,0; 2,5; 3,0; 3,5; 4,0; 5,0 e 6,0 dS m-1) e 3 espécies de plantas ornamentais. Quatro métodos de avaliação da tolerância à salinidade foram testados, utilizando valores relativos ou percentuais de redução das análises quantitativas e qualitativas. Os diferentes métodos evidenciam maior sensibilidade à salinidade de C. roseus, na fase de produção de mudas, em relação às espécies T. patula e C. argentea. Os métodos da salinidade limiar e do índice ORN apresentaram resultados semelhantes, sendo C. roseus classificada como sensível e as espécies T. patula e C. argentea como moderadamente sensíveis à salinidade. O método de Fageria (1985) permitiu boa separação das espécies, com limites de tolerância de 1,5; 2,5 e 3,5 dS m-1, respectivamente para C. roseus, T. patula e C. argentea. Fica óbvio pela comparação com dados da literatura que a fase de produção de mudas é mais sensível ao estresse salino, sendo necessária a realização de novos estudos que visem atenuar os efeitos do estresse nessa fase, mediante o emprego de técnicas de manejo.

ABSTRACT The guarantee of water supply for irrigated agriculture in the semi-arid region must necessarily involve the use of lower quality water, such as brackish water. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the tolerance to salinity of the ornamental species Catharanthus roseus, Tagetes patula and Celosia argentea, using different methods. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block, arranged in a 10 x 3 factorial scheme, corresponding to 10 saline concentrations of irrigation water (ECw 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5; 3.0; 3.5; 4.0; 5.0 and 6.0 dS m-1) and 3 ornamental species. Four salinity tolerance assessment methods were tested, using relative values or percentages of reduction in quantitative and qualitative analyses. The different methods show the highest sensitivity to salinity of C. roseus, in the seedling production stage, compared to T. patula and C. argentea species. The methods of threshold salinity and ORN index led to similar results in terms of classification of salt tolerance, with C. roseus classified as sensitive and T. patula and C. argentea as moderately sensitive. The method of Fageria (1985) allowed good separation of the species, with tolerance limits of 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 dS m-1, respectively for C. roseus, T. patula and C. argentea. It is obvious from the comparison with literature data that the seedling production stage is more sensitive to salt stress, and it is necessary to carry out new studies aimed at attenuating the effects of stress at this stage, through the use of management techniques.

ABSTRACT. Plants are often exposed to abiotic stresses such as salinity, which represents a barrier to the cultivation of agricultural species mainly in arid and semi-arid regions. This study evaluated the development of four saccharine sorghum genotypes for tolerance to different salinity levels under greenhouse conditions. The experimental design was a randomized complete block arranged in a 5 × 4 factorial scheme, which corresponded to five levels of irrigation water salinity [electrical conductivities of 0.5 (control), 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 dS m-1] and four saccharine sorghum genotypes (CSF 11, CSF 15, P 76 and P 298), with five replicates. The plants were evaluated for dry mass production, leaf area, height, stalk diameter, leaf gas exchange and relative chlorophyll content. The growth and leaf gas exchange measurements of the saccharine sorghum plants were significantly affected by salinity stress. Among the genotypes, CSF 11 and CSF 15 exhibited smaller reductions in growth, whereas P 298 showed the greatest reduction. These findings show that genotype CSF 11 can be classified as the most tolerant to salt stress, and genotype P 298 is the most sensitive.

RESUMO A redução da disponibilidade hídrica causa efeitos na fisiologia e morfologia das plantas, sendo responsável por alterações no metabolismo, com implicações no desenvolvimento de plantas arbóreas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do estresse hídrico no crescimento foliar e estado nutricional em plantas adultas de gonçalo-alves (Astronium fraxinifolium), guanandi (Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess.), ipê-amarelo (Handroanthus serratifolius (Vahl.), ipê-rosa (Handroanthus impetiginosa (Mart.) Matos.), marupá (Simarouba amara Aubl.) e mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King.), cultivadas em condições de sequeiro e irrigadas, no perímetro irrigado do Baixo Acaraú, Ceará. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de medidas repetidas no tempo, num esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas (6 x 2 x 2), sendo a parcela principal composta por seis espécies, a subparcela por dois regimes hídricos (irrigado e sequeiro) e a subsubparcela pelas épocas de avaliação. Foram determinadas concentrações foliares de N, P e K, além de área foliar específica (AFE), grau de suculência (GS), índice relativo de clorofila (IRC) e eficiência fotossintética no uso de N (A/N) e P (A/P), nas estações seca e chuvosa. Os resultados mostraram que o ipê-amarelo foi a espécie mais sensível quanto à variação das concentrações de N, P e K nas folhas em resposta à disponibilidade de água no solo. Quanto à AFE, ipê-amarelo, ipê-rosa e mogno foram mais sensíveis às condições de déficit hídrico extremo. A restrição hídrica no solo ocasiona a diminuição da suculência foliar no gonçalo-alves e no mogno. O IRC é diretamente afetado pelo déficit hídrico e está relacionado ao maior GS e à menor AFE. Quanto a A/N e A/P, o gonçalo-alves foi a espécie mais eficiente, não sendo afetado pelas condições de disponibilidade hídrica do solo.

ABSTRACT The reduction in water availability effects plant physiology and morphology and accounts for changes in metabolism with implications for the development of tree species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of water stress on morphophysiological leaf characteristics and nutritional status of adult plant of gonçalo-alves (Astronium fraxinifolium), guanandi (Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess.), ipê-amarelo (Handroanthus serratifolius (Vahl.), ipê-rosa (Handroanthus impetiginosa (Mart.) Matos.), marupá (Simarouba amara Aubl.) and mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King.) cultivated under rainfed and irrigated conditions, in the irrigation perimeter of Baixo Acaraú, Ceará. The experimental design was a repeated measures, a scheme of sub-divided plots (6 x 2 x 2), the main plot consists of six species, the sub-plot of two water availability (irrigated and rainfed) and the sub-subplots were the evaluation time. The following evaluations were performed during the dry and rainy seasons: foliar concentrations of N, P, K and Na, specific leaf area (AFE), leaf succulence (GS), and relative index of chlorophyll (IRC). The results showed that ipê-amarelo was the most sensitive species in terms of variation of N, P and K concentrations in leaves in response to soil water availability. Regarding AFE, ipê-amarelo, ipê-rosa and mogno were more sensitive to extreme water deficit conditions. The water restriction in the soil causes the decrease of the leaf succulence in the gonçalo alves and mogno. The chlorophyll is directly affected by drought and is related to the higher GS and the lower AFE. As for A/N and A/P, gonçalo-alves was more efficient species, not affected by soil water availability conditions.

RESUMO A escassez de água e a salinidade são duas limitações importantes para a produção agrícola. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, investigar os mecanismos bioquímicos associados às ações isoladas e/ou simultâneas do déficit hídrico e da salinidade do solo, em plantas jovens de coqueiro “anão verde”, através das respostas dos acúmulos de íons (potássio, sódio e cloreto), em folhas e em raízes. No experimento, conduzido em casa de vegetação, do tipo telado, em Fortaleza, Ceará, avaliaram-se, sob delineamento estatístico de blocos completos casualizados, no delineamento de tratamentos de parcelas subdivididas, os efeitos de diferentes níveis de deficiência hídrica (parcelas), mediante a imposição de distintos percentuais de reposições das perdas de água por evapotranspiração potencial da cultura (20; 40; 60; 80 e 100%), associados às subparcelas, constituídas pelos crescentes níveis de salinidade do solo (1,72; 6,25; 25,80 e 40,70 dS m-1), proporcionados pelos solos coletados no Perímetro Irrigado Morada Nova (Morada Nova/ Limoeiro do Norte, Ceará). Sob condições de insuficiência de água, ocorre manutenção e/ou acúmulo de K+ nas folhas, ao passo que, nas raízes, os teores são mutuamente afetados pela deficiência hídrica e pela salinidade do solo, onde esses agentes estressores atuam de forma antagônica, sob os teores de K+. As condições de estresse salino provocam aumentos nos teores de Na+, tanto nas folhas como nas raízes, especialmente, nas raízes. Os teores foliares e radiculares do íon Cl- respondem à interação entre a deficiência hídrica e a salinidade, denotando-se a existência de sinergismo na associação entre os agentes estressores. O acúmulo de solutos inorgânicos foliares e radiculares, nas plantas de coqueiro, obedece à ordem: Cl- > K+ > Na+.

ABSTRACT Water scarcity and salinity are two major limitations on agricultural production. The aim of this study was to investigate the biochemical mechanisms associated with the separate and/or concurrent effects of water deficit and soil salinity on young plants of the ‘green dwarf’ coconut from the responses of ion accumulation (potassium, sodium and chloride) in the leaves and roots. The experiment was carried out in a screened greenhouse in Fortaleza, in the State of Ceará, Brazil. A randomised complete block statistical design was used in a scheme of treatments in subdivided plots, to evaluate the effects of different levels of water deficiency (plots) using different percentages for the replacement of water lost through potential crop evapotranspiration (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%), associated with sub-plots comprising increasing levels of soil salinity (1.72, 6.25 , 25.80 and 40.70 dS m-1) found in soils collected in the Morada Nova Irrigated Perimeter (Morada Nova/Limoeiro do Norte, Ceará). Under conditions of water scarcity, K+ is maintained and/or accumulated in the leaves; while in the roots, levels are jointly affected by water deficiency and soil salinity, where these stress agents act in an antagonistic way on the K+ content. Conditions of salt stress lead to increases in the levels of Na+ both in the leaves and especially in the roots. The Cl- ion content of the leaves and roots responds to the interaction between water deficiency and salinity, demonstrating synergy in the relationship between stress agents. The accumulation of inorganic solutes in the leaves and roots of the coconut follows the order: Cl- > K+ > Na+.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of light availability and salt stress on the growth and quality of hazel sterculia seedlings. The experiment was conducted with two light conditions – full sun (L1), and 50% shading (L2) – and five salinity levels in the irrigation water – 1.0 (S1), 2.2 (S2), 3.2 (S3), 4.2 (S4), and 5.1 (S5) dS m-1. The environment with 50% shading was the most suitable to produce hazel sterculia seedlings, even under high salinity (5.1 dS m-1). Increasing salinity negatively affects the growth and quality of hazel sterculia seedlings. Therefore, controlling sunlight availability and irrigation water saline conditions increases rooting potential and seedling survival in the field.

Resumo Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, caracterizar as repostas fisiológicas aclimatativas de plantas jovens de coqueiro Anão, cultivar ―Verde do Jiqui‖, associadas com a sua tolerância às condições de múltiplos estresses abióticos (deficiência hídrica e salinidade do solo), atuando isolados e/ou combinados. O estudo foi realizado sob condições controladas e avaliaram-se: as trocas gasosas foliares, o rendimento quântico da fluorescência da clorofila a e os teores relativos de clorofila total (índice Spad). O experimento foi conduzido sob delineamento estatístico de blocos casualizados, no arranjo de parcelas subdivididas, sendo as parcelas constituídas por diferentes níveis de deficiência hídrica, mediante a imposição de cinco distintos percentuais de reposição das perdas de água por evapotranspiração potencial da cultura (100; 80; 60; 40 e 20%) e as subparcelas constituídas pelos crescentes níveis de salinidade do solo (1,72; 6,25; 25,80 e 40,70 dS m-1). Os mecanismos fisiológicos são efetivamente limitados quando a deficiência hídrica e a salinidade atuam isoladamente e/ou em conjunto. Os efeitos do estresse hídrico se mostram mais efetivos nos comprometimentos dos parâmetros fisiológicos, em detrimento à salinidade do solo. As magnitudes das respostas das plantas ao suprimento hídrico e à salinidade dependem das intensidades dos estresses e das épocas de avaliação. As respostas fisiológicas aclimatativas das plantas estão relacionadas, principalmente, à regulação estomática. O coqueiro apresenta uma série de mecanismos de ajustes fisiológicos que conferem à espécie uma parcial tolerância ao estresse hídrico e/ou salino, tornando-a capaz de revegetar áreas salinizadas, desde que as necessidades hídricas sejam ao menos parcialmente atendidas.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to characterize the physiological acclimation responses of young plants of the dwarf coconut cultivar Jiqui Green‘ associated with tolerance to conditions of multiple abiotic stresses (drought and soil salinity), acting either independently or in combination. The study was conducted under controlled conditions and evaluated the following parameters: leaf gas exchange, quantum yield of chlorophyll a fluorescence, and relative contents of total chlorophyll (SPAD index). The experiment was conducted under a randomized block experimental design, in a split plot arrangement. In the plots, plants were exposed to different levels of water stress, by imposing potential crop evapotranspiration replacement levels equivalent to 100%, 80%, 60%, 40%, and 20%, whereas in subplots, plants were exposed to different levels of soil salinity (1.72, 6.25, 25.80, and 40.70 dS m-1). Physiological mechanisms were effectively limited when water deficit and salinity acted separately and/or together. Compared with soil salinity, water stress was more effective in reducing the measured physiological parameters. The magnitudes of the responses of plants to water supply and salinity depended on the intensity of stress and evaluation period. The physiological acclimation responses of plants were mainly related to stomatal regulation. The coconut tree has a number of physiological adjustment mechanisms that give the species partial tolerance to drought stress and/or salt, thereby enabling it to revegetate salinated areas, provided that its water requirements are at least partially met.
